GENEROSITY SAVES LIVES
Our goals are ambitious. So are we.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
Dear Supporter of AdventHealth Hendersonville,
Generosity Saves Lives serves as a rallying cry for our community, urging us to accelerate our post-pandemic and post-Helene educational and economic recovery. AdventHealth Hendersonville Foundation directly supports programs and services at AdventHealth, enabling us to consistently be ranked as a top health care provider in Western North Carolina.
We are committed to providing hope and healing to patients, families, and our team members in need by Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. This year, AdventHealth Hendersonville Foundation embarks on raising funds for a Level II Neonatal unit [NICU] and a mobile Catheterization Lab (cath lab) via coordination with Duke LifePoint Cardiac Partners. Your commitment to generosity allows us to partner with you to expand care to our community.
Thank you for your unwavering support of our dedication to care for you and the people across our region.
Blessings,
Brandon Nudd, FACHE AdventHealth Hendersonville | AdventHealth Polk President and Chief Executive Officer
NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU) 1
AdventHealth plans to serve more than 100 additional babies and their families each year with a Level II NICU.
AdventHealth is excited to announce the plans for opening our stateof-the-art Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at The Baby Place. This new facility features five beds, including three private rooms and two stabilization bays, providing families the privacy and comfort they need while visiting their babies. Our NICU will allow The Baby Place to care for sick and premature infants while keeping them close to home.

CATHETERIZATION LAB (CATH LAB)
2
AdventHealth plans to provide heart catheterizations and stenting procedures, along with Interventional Radiology vascular procedures.
AdventHealth is advancing toward the introduction of a new option for advanced cardiac care with a mobile Catheterization Lab via coordination with Duke LifePoint Cardiac Partners. Initially the cath lab will offer heart and interventional radiology procedures. This includes diagnostic heart catheterizations, simple stenting and interventional radiology procedures. We are excited to share that we plan to expand our services in the future.

Building a special care nursery [NICU] at AdventHealth Hendersonville expands the care of sick and premature babies at their most vulnerable time. It will allow us to care for the babies closer to home, keeping the family intact (and even in the same room!), and reducing the natural stress of having an unexpectedly sick baby. The specialists that care for babies at AdventHealth Hendersonville are working hard to bring expanded neonatal care to Western North Carolina for all babies born here that are premature.

As a career health services executive, I always evaluate my care experiences across the spectrum of outcomes, clinical staff, administrative staff, and good old “bedside manner”. Also, with the many touch points involved in complex clinical cases, I look at how well the system tracks and communicates health information. The care I have received from the AdventHealth system in Hendersonville is the best I have ever experienced.

NICU
1
THE WHAT
A Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Opening our state-of-the-art Level II NICU at The Baby Place at AdventHealth will allow us to accept mothers as early as 32 weeks’ gestation. This unit will have three private rooms and two stabilization bays, which is unique and will allow us to create additional privacy for families while visiting their babies.
The NICU will provide lifesaving medical care to sick or premature newborns. Care will include:
• Low birth weight: Babies born with a low body weight due to being premature or having other health issues
• Moderately ill: Babies born with problems that are expected to get better quickly, and who aren’t anticipated to need urgent specialty care
• Advanced imaging: Babies who need advanced imaging like CT scans, ultrasounds, and echocardiograms
• Feeding support: Babies who need long-term nutritional support through an intravenous or gastric tube

THE WHY
Families need enhanced access to neonatal acute care services in the service area.
The closure of five labor and delivery units in Western North Carolina has deeply affected families in the region. Expectant mothers now face the possible reality of traveling elsewhere to receive the care they need. The distance of travel can be up to 150 miles, which no mother or newborn should have to endure. Mission Hospital’s neonatal acute care beds have become a lifeline for many. But when these beds reach a high occupancy rate families are forced to travel away from home to Charlotte, NC, Greenville, SC, or Tennessee. The journey isn’t just a physical strain, but an emotional one for the health and safety of the newborn.
Transferring a newborn, whether pre-term or full-term, can potentially lead to serious complications that could have been easily avoided. The risks of transferring are even higher for pre-term newborns as their body has not fully developed. The impact this leaves on families is profound as they navigate their own emotions and making the best health care decisions for their newborn.
AdventHealth will serve more than 100 ADDITIONAL NEWBORNS EVERY YEAR
Over the past 10 years, 5 HOSPITALS IN WNC have closed labor and delivery services
Babies born before 34 weeks of pregnancy are most likely TO HAVE HEALTH PROBLEMS
About 10% of all babies ARE BORN PREMATURE

Expecting Third Child
History of Preterm Deliveries

FROM THE FIRST BREATH
“Life can be unpredictable, and I have seen evidence of this through my personal journey. Having a baby in a traditional, non-high-risk pregnancy is a lot of work. But when I was told that I was entering preterm labor, would be separated from my child when they were born, and they would be placed in the NICU, the whole situation was amplified.
My first son arrived prematurely at 32 weeks (about 7 and a half months) and I was scared. As quickly as I brought him into this world, he was taken away and placed with people that I did not know but I had to trust.
The NICU team at AdventHealth for Children in Orlando, Florida, provided exceptional care for my whole family. They cared for us physically, mentally, and spiritually. The doctors and nurses became family. They supported us again when my second son was born prematurely at 34 weeks (about 8 months).
When I received the news that AdventHealth Hendersonville was approved for a Neonatal Unit, I was beyond excited. This will make an outstanding impact on our community and will provide future mothers with more health care options for their newborns without the stress of being far from home.
Now, I am expecting a daughter. My heart’s desire is to deliver at AdventHealth Hendersonville and receive the excellent, loving care that I hold near to my heart. With my history of preterm labor and the NICU not completed, I have prepared myself to deliver at another location more than an hour away.
I am proud of the work that this organization is doing to help people feel whole, even when they take their first breath.”

CATH LAB
THE WHAT
AdventHealth is introducing a new option for advanced cardiac care with a mobile Catheterization Lab via coordination with Duke LifePoint Cardiac Partners.
Cardiac catheterization is a test or treatment for certain heart or blood vessel problems, such as clogged arteries or irregular heartbeats. The catheterization lab will offer heart and interventional radiology procedures. This includes right and left diagnostic heart catheterizations, simple stenting, and radiology procedures, with plans to expand services in the future. Opening a cath lab will allow the AdventHealth Cardiology team to provide heart catheterizations, stenting procedures and interventional radiology vascular procedures. This will give people with heart health issues much-needed local access to advanced cardiac care.
Care will include:
• Diagnostic heart catheterizations
• Stenting
• Interventional radiology procedures
THE WHY
The AdventHealth patient community will be able to continue their heart care seamlessly, without traveling to other hospitals. Cardiac catheterization is a common method to diagnose or treat a variety of heart health issues. It is important to note that heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, with one person dying due to cardiovascular disease every 33 seconds.

A HEARTFELT JOURNEY:
Trusting AdventHealth for Life-Saving Care and Future Innovations.
A reliable health care system is something I have always been passionate about. When I experienced health concerns in September of 2024, the only place I wanted to receive treatment from was AdventHealth. After a successful procedure and a nine-day inpatient stay, I found myself learning about underlying heart conditions that the team found that I was not aware of.

When these problems were unveiled, Eduardo Balcells, MD acted swiftly to create a plan and treat me and my condition. During my stay at AdventHealth Hendersonville, I transferred to the heart catheterization lab in Haywood County. Dr. Balcells, with his compassionate care, proceeded to perform a heart catheterization. Having him as a constant resource during this time was very important to me. I trusted him.
The procedure was a success, and I was transferred back to AdventHealth to receive post-op care. Dr. Balcells and his team provided the most distinguished care, and I truly do not know where I would be today without his help. My experience revealed how vital it is for AdventHealth Hendersonville to have a heart catheterization lab. If a heart catheterization lab had been available onsite, I could have remained in the health care system that I trust.
AdventHealth is the ‘gold standard’ of health care in our community. I absolutely applaud the decision to construct a heart catheterization lab and support the hospital in investing in this new line of service. The care I have received from AdventHealth Hendersonville is the best I have ever received. Expanding services, such as this one, within AdventHealth will allow patients to stay within the health care system that they know and trust.
