Child safety addressed at town halls by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Two town halls were held June 1 at Vogelweh’s Armstrong’s Club and at the Hercules Theater on Ramstein to address child safety. Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin, 3rd Air Force commander and KMC commander, and Maj. Gen. Aundre Piggee, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general, hosted the town halls together. Franklin and Piggee had scheduled the town halls for mid-June to offer KMC residents an update on the investigation of two alleged sexual assaults and an alleged attempted abduction. The commanders moved up the town halls to June 1 following an alleged attempted abduction report May 30 on Vogelweh. The town halls explained that leads are being aggressively pursued while joint task force officials investigate circumstances surrounding the report. According to investigative officials, more than 2,080 man hours have See TOWN HALL, Page 6

ecently, our squadron held a retirement ceremony for one of our Airmen. The colors were posted, the national anthem was sung (very well, by the way) and gifts were given. The presiding officer reviewed the officer’s very distinguished 21-year career and highlighted the largest events and the grand successes during his time in the Air Force, which by the way were numerous and pretty impressive. After all the certificates were rendered, the medal presented and the photographs completed, the newly retired Airman was given the floor. I will admit here that I actually pay attention to all of the proceedings, but I especially listen when the newly retired take the floor. There are always good bits of advice and nuggets of knowledge to gain. This particular Airman was

no exception. He thanked his family for their support and acknowledged the people in his career who had influenced him. But in the end, and very humbly, he deflected the credit of his accomplishments to the people who surrounded him when he had succeeded so many times. I have attended many retirements and I have heard some interesting comments, but this humble deflection was a poignant reminder that we don’t work in a vacuum. It takes a team all the time. Sometimes it is too easy to take the credit for a job well done individually. It is here I would like to pass credit around for some recent missions the 76th Airlift Squadron has accomplished and say thanks for the support often overlooked and underappreciated. Two missions come to my mind, one being a recent C-40 mission launched with minimum notice. Usually, the C-40 is the most stable, unchanging schedule we have because of the primary user. This mission, however, was quite different.

We were notified of the mission, and 14 hours later the jet was airborne. Getting the aircraft airborne was the easy part — making sure it, the crew and ultimately the passengers were ready was the difficult part. The passengers were coming from a downrange location and en route to D.C. for a very important meeting with a return to the downrange location. The list of agencies across the base to ensure this mission happened was very large. Maintenance had to ensure the aircraft was ready to go. The 86th Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment team ensured the proper survival gear and flak vests were loaded onto the aircraft and were ready to go. The intel shop prepped and briefed the crew on threats and special instructions for the downrange stop. Protocol had to be ready for the large number of high-level passengers and their various needs. Vehicle transportation was tapped to transport the passengers around

the base prior to the C-40 departing. Finally, the 603d Air Mobility Division ensured the flight had the right diplomatic clearances and was fully dispatched with the appropriate flight paperwork. Almost every group in the 86th Airlift Wing had a hand in making sure this high-visibility mission was ready in the short 14-hour window and was launched on time. The second mission was a very recent aeromedical evacuation mission to Tbilisi, Georgia. We run a 24-hour-a-day AE alert all year. For me this mission is by far the most rewarding mission we do. This particular mission was alerted very early in the day. These alerts typically launch only two hours after the alert has been given. Again, the tidal wave of motion necessary to get everything in place and ready for the launch was immense. Again, the AMD built the flight See TEAM, next Page

Law enforcement aids neighborhood watch program by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Neighborhood watch classes were held May 29 to 31 at the Hercules Theater and the School Liaison Office on Vogelweh to increase community involvement and vigilance. The 86th Security Forces Squadron and 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron instructed the classes and provided residents the opportunity to assist law enforcement while also helping the communities. “Neighborhood watches are supposed to be planned by the community,” said Tech. Sgt. Gregory Stanley, noncommissioned officer in charge of police services. “We hosted these classes to help them create the program and assist from a law enforcement standpoint.”

Since neighborhood watches are planned by the community, maximum involvement is key. “This is a matter of curiosity for some people, so drawing a full crowd would give us something to build off of,” said Staff Sgt. Nealon Joseph, assistant NCOIC for police services. Neighborhood watch offers a sense of community. “We’re in the community a lot, and we think it’s kind of weird how we’re on this giant base and people don’t talk to each other,” said Robbin Furtado, wife of Master Sgt. Lionel Furtado, residents of Ramstein base housing. “It’s hard to see our children playing with each other, and we don’t even know the parents anymore. This program was requested by the community. We can’t do it without them.” KMC members are looking for others to be more aware. If people are aware, they’ll be able to protect their families, Furtado said. “It’s better for residents to know the neighbors. nicate our gratitude to the people of this region,” said Col. Bill Ward, 86th Operations Group commander. “We lost many brethren here 68 years ago and we are very grateful that the people here choose to remember it every year.” Picauville was the site where four C-47 Skytrains were shot down. “The fates of many nations were decided 68 years ago. A friendship was forged, which has since stood the test of time and promises to continue for many decades,” Ward said. Then, in Sainte-Mère-Église, a city in Normandy where paratroopers landed 68 years ago, a string of C-130s, a German C-160 and an old C-47 dropped more than 40 Army, Air Force, German, French and Dutch parajumpers June 3. “It was quite an amazing site to see,” said Thomas Cooper, a spectator who flew in from the U.K. to take part in the week-long events. “The food and festivities have me stay for the week and it’s the kindness of all the participants that keeps me coming back.” The drop was a way to pay homage to the warriors who died in service to their country. “It’s important to remember where you came from,” said Chief Master Sgt. Lew Holston Jr., 37th Airlift Squadron superintendent. “Although a lot of this is Army Air Corps history, we were still part of this drop with the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron who made some of the most accurate drops.” TOWN HALL, from Page 1

They should actively supervise their children, remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.” In addition to encouraging community participation in a newly established neighborhood watch program, KMC leadership also provided updates on safety initiatives. “We have implemented a neighborhood watch program; bike patrols and walking patrols around schools and parks have been increased to include officers who are not in uniform, and there are

For one Airman, getting the chance to attend this year’s state fair offered him the opportunity to try something that most Airmen don’t experience. “We got to meet someone in a leadership position, who we normally wouldn’t get a chance to meet,” said Airman 1st Class Joshua Peckham, 86th Comptroller Squadron financial management apprentice. “It was a nice experience. He shook our hands and thanked us for what we do.” The fair was also an opportunity for the community to learn more about

the military’s mission in Germany. The different static displays allowed Airmen to interact with visitors and also showed them how involved the military is in the community. “People got to ask questions and see demonstrations, like a military working dog display,” Peckham said. “I even learned some things from the different personnel briefings at each stand.” “This whole event shows the community that we’re working with our (host nation) counterparts,” he said. “The interaction between military and civilians shows that we care about being here.”

21st TSC remembers fallen, honors service by Angelika Lantz 21st TSC Public Affairs Remembering fallen heroes and military families figured prominently into the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s wreath laying, retirement and honorary awards ceremony May 31 at separate locations in Kaiserslautern. At the 21st TSC memorial site on Panzer Kaserne, the command unveiled the name of Sgt. Paul Rivera, 527th Military Police Company, 709th MP Battalion, 18th MP Brigade, and paid tribute to all 31 fallen heroes. Rivera died Oct. 22, 2011, in Logar Province, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered in a vehicle rollover during an attack by enemy forces. Maj. Gen. Aundre F. Piggee, commanding general of the 21st TSC, quoted former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates when he said Memorial Day is a day to also remember military families at the retirement and awards ceremonies, which were held in the Kleber Physical Fitness Center gymnasium on Kleber Kaserne. “A day where we must also honor the sacrifices of military family members, who in recent years have borne the brunt of repeated deployments, long partings and the fear of receiving the knock on the door with the worst of all possible news,” Piggee said. Col. Mark Oswald, the staff judge advocate for the 21st TSC’s 7th Civil Support

Command, retired after serving on active duty and in reserve capacities for 33 years. He has been serving as a Department of State foreign service officer and vice consultant at the Embassy in New Delhi, India, for the past five months. “This assignment really puts the ‘foreign’ in foreign service, and I have to say my hat is off to my family and to every other military family. They serve, too. They deal with all the separations and unrest, the moves, everything — and they continue to support our Soldiers,” Oswald said. Sgt. 1st Class Wiley Robinson retired after more than 22 years of service. His last assignment was with the 21st TSC’s 405th Army Field Support Brigade, where he served as a master resilience trainer facilitator. Also a family man, Robinson used the ceremony to make an official pledge of commitment, complete with certificates to his wife Viola and his daughters Akylah and Amani. Jennifer J. Beckwith, Ph.D., principal of Kaiserslautern High School, has devoted her entire career to serving military families through the Department of Defense Education Activity Schools. She was honored for her commitment and involvement in the education and well-being of children in the community. Global medical practitioners work to seamlessly integrate by Staff Sgt. Daryl Knee Shared Resilience 2012 CAPLJINA, Bosnia and Herzegovina — Instructors from the U.S. Defense Institute for Medical Operations are exchanging ideas and techniques with medical practitioners from the different countries participating in Exercise Shared Resilience 2012 here May 28 to today. The information flow is driven from a class titled “Critical Lifesaving Skills for First Responders” and focuses on the basic steps to save lives at the very onset of injury. “We’re not trying to get the students to do things our way,” said Master Sgt. Joe Coyle, a course instructor from Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. “We want the students to take something of value and use it in their communities in their own specific way to improve the care given to patients.” The institute is a dual service agency composed of Air Force and Navy service members who provide regionally focused health care education and training to partners around the world. So far, the instructors have worked with more than 7,000 people in the global medical community in hopes that if a medical emergency were to happen, the responders — regardless of nationality — would seamlessly integrate to provide the best care possible. “It’s like working with an old friend again,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Joe Schmid, course director

and mobilization assistant to Air Force Medical Operations Agency at JBSA. “The course fosters a learning atmosphere; we learn as much from them as they do from us. There are always different customs and local rules that we may not be familiar with.” Schmid said one of the challenges of being a first responder in this region is the ability to medically assess and treat injuries in austere conditions with limited resources, especially at sites of natural disasters. Earthquakes or floods, for instance, cause widespread damage and usually Photo by Staff Sgt. Tabitha Lee affect electricity. 21st TSC participates in Normandy Memorial Day ceremony Story and photo by Angelika Lantz 21st TSC Public Affairs COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France — “The right place to be” summed up the sentiment of many 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers who participated in the Memorial Day ceremony May 27 at the Normandy American Cemetery here. The approximately 35 Soldiers from the 21st TSC provided the color guard, the rifle squad and an honor platoon for the ceremony. “This is the No. 1 place I wanted to visit in all of Europe. It is the sight of so much sacrifice. To be here in uniform, especially for Memorial Day, is a great honor — a way for me to pay my respects,” said 2nd Lt. Aaron Dermon, the deputy dispersing officer with the 21st TSC’s 266th Financial Management Center. In his remarks, Maj. Gen. Aundre F. Piggee, commanding general of the 21st TSC, acknowledged a similar indebtedness. “As we commemorate the fallen resting here, we are reminded how great a debt of gratitude we owe,” he said. About 9,387 Americans and 1,557 Soldiers, who went missing during the Normandy campaign, are buried in Normandy. “This sea of crosses and stars of David is a stark reminder of the sacrifices of these selfless men and women, who found the extraordinary courage to serve, to do battle and to die for the hopes of the free world,” Piggee said.

Indeed, the morning downpour and heavy rain clouds did not prevent a sizable crowd of visitors from attending the ceremony and paying their respects at the immaculately landscaped cemetery, which overlooks the famed Omaha Beach and the English Channel. Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is the final resting place for three Medal of Honor recipients and four women. Additionally, a father and son as well as 33 pairs of brothers are buried here, side by side. Travelers: AFPAAS updates needed Y

ou’re on a beautiful and much deserved vacation when a natural disaster occurs or a seemingly harmless protest turns violent, resulting in widespread panic and civil unrest across the country. Unfortunately, in today’s world these scenarios are becoming increasingly more realistic. With summer vacations fast approaching, the Air Force and its leaders want to ensure Airmen and their families know what to do if and when crisis or disaster strike. To ensure accountability of its most valuable resource, Airmen, the Air Force has developed the Air Force Personnel Accountability and Assessment System. AFPAAS was created to standardize a method of reporting for active duty, selected Reserve (reflected in Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System), Department of Defense civilians (appropriated and nonappropriated), Air Force contractors and their families while providing the chain of command valuable information allowing leaders to make strategic decisions and facilitate a return to stability. The AFPAAS has other capabilities other than accounting for your status. Personnel can update contact/loca-

tion information and search for personnel. There are also an abundance of resources on the site, including Military OneSource, current weather warnings and watches, and information concerning the latest outbreaks on viruses. Here are a few simple steps to help you report your status: 1. Go to www.afpaas.af.mil. 2. Click the “Airmen/Civilians” button 3. Login to AFPAAS using a common access card, username/password, or personal information 4. Complete assessment (if affected) Note: AFPAAS can also be accessed from the Air Force Portal, AF.mil and the Air Force Personnel Center website (www.afpc.randolph.af.mil). Once on the AFPAAS site, you will notice five tabs that will assist you in navigating the page: “Home,” “My Info,” “Assessment,” “Reference” and “Help.” Using the “Home” tab allows you to view announcements and current events, and helps you find available resources and other useful links. “My Info” gives you the opportunity to update personal and family member information. If you access the “Assessment” tab and you are not affected by an event, you will get

7th CSC units earn maintenance awards by 7th Civil Support Command Public Affairs WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 1172nd Movement Control Team and the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 7th Civil Support Command, were recognized for maintenance excellence during the Army Chief of Staff Combined Logistics Excellence Awards ceremony here today. The 1172d Movement Control Team won the Department of the Army, Deployment Excellence Award, Army Reserve, Supporting Unit Category. HHC 7th CSC received runner up for the Department of the Army, Army Award for Maintenance Excellence, Army Reserve, Medium Category. The AAME program strives to improve and sustain field maintenance readiness, improve and reduce waste, and recognize outstanding maintenance accomplishments and initiatives. Units of the 7th CSC have won U.S. Army Europe-level awards eight out of the past nine years, but this is the first year a 7th CSC unit has won at the Department of the Army-level.

a “thumbs up.” If you are affected, you will be asked to complete a short accountability assessment for you and your family members. The “Reference” tab lists key phone numbers and points of contact for agencies such as the Air Force Personnel Readiness Center, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, American Red Cross and Tricare. The last tab, “Help,” allows you to provide feedback regarding AFPAAS in the spirit of constant improvement. Realizing that not everyone will have immediate access to a computer, AFPAAS can also be accessed using certain Smartphones. Capabilities are constantly being expanded and currently include a mobile phone web app accessible through your phone’s browser (no app to download saves you space), Smartphone friendly user interface, and simple steps that lead the user through the accountability process. The mobile version does have some limitations as it is only available to sponsors. Also, the mobile program is available only to personnel affected by an event. It can’t be used to update contact information apart from an

event. Another limitation is that the mobile version is designed only for iPhone, Android and certain touchscreen BlackBerry phones (not iPad or non-touch-screen phones). Those members not having access to a computer or Smartphone and who are unable to contact their unit control center or commanding officer representative should contact the Air Force Personnel Center Personnel Readiness Cell at 800-435-9941. Serving overseas has many benefits and we should take time to enjoy the many opportunities to travel while here in Europe. With those opportunities comes the responsibility to have a plan in place should a crisis or natural disasters occur. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the system and its capabilities. For more information regarding AFPAAS, contact your local installation personnel readiness office. Note: The Army and Navy have similar systems in the Army Disaster Personnel Accountability and Assessment System and Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System, respectively. Graduating students to change pace by Maddie Fahlbusch Ramstein High School

S

ummer always signifies a change of pace for students. For most students it means no more homework, no more tests and no more waking up in the morning’s early hours to catch that gaudy yellow school bus. All these tasks that were routine are now irrelevant — at least until next fall. For the 2012 graduating class however, this change of pace is slightly more permanent. They now enter a crossroads in their lives where they decide on matters that impact them in a major way. It is very sobering for many whose day-to-day decisions were what to wear that day or what to do over the weekend. Now, society challenges them to choose a new location to live, most likely far away from their friends and family. I know because I am currently in that very situation. I feel very anxious about beginning this new chapter in my life, especially because most everyone else around me faces their own situation with more bravery and excitement than I do. If you are like me and feel apprehensive about taking this plunge into adulthood, know that there are some ways to face this milestone with more confidence:

• Go to your college’s orientation so that you familiarize yourself with your new “home” and hopefully meet a few people, too. • Unlock your inner “Extreme Makeover” fanatic and get yourself some new decorations for your new dorm. It is a way to get excited about something and makes your new digs feel like home. • Get a new laptop so working on your assignments is easier when you start your classes. Having an efficient way to complete your assignments is one less thing for you to stress about. • Figure out how far away you are from your parents, relatives and friends so making plans to visit on weekends and holidays is easier. • Organize your life. Having your “ducks in a row” is very important, especially if you are naturally messy like me because not being able to find things stresses anyone out. • Find a little time for fun activities this summer. Spending time going on vacation with your family, camping with your friends, or even just reading a book poolside by yourself are all fun things that beat the summer blues. Nobody ever said this major milestone in life is easy but with any luck, these tips should help you to plunge into college life easier and face the future like a pro.

MRSA may be transmitted in workplace by Karla Simon U.S. Army Public Health Command Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus is a potentially dangerous type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. It typically causes skin infection but can also affect the bloodstream, lungs, heart, bones and joints. Motorists without Stateside number gives callers easy vignettes pay fines access to Army in Europe from US

T

he use of highways and expressways in Europe is often not free of charge. Travelers should know where they have to pay a toll or where they need a vignette. In France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Serbia and Spain motorists pay per kilometer. The cost varies according to the length of the route. Vignettes with various validity periods are available in Bulgaria, Austria, Romania, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland and Slovakia. Motorists should not forget to purchase a vignette prior to the trip because fines can be drastic. For example, Slovenia charges up to €800. In Slovakia it is common to have to pay a fine three times as much as the vignette, sometimes even 10 times as high. Austria does not like motorists who do not get a vignette or pay the toll. They charge a substitute toll of €120 or a fine of at least €300. Besides the vignette or the toll, many countries charge additional tolls on some roads, on bridges, in tunnels or in the center of cities. This applies to Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, France and Spain. The vignettes for Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic are available at ADAC offices, online at www.adac-shop.de or by calling 01805101112. (Courtesy of ADAC)

HEIDELBERG, Germany — Anyone can now call the Army in Europe’s official Defense Switched Network phone numbers from the U.S. via a standard stateside commercial telephone number. The number — 301-981-1059 — gives callers in the U.S. who do not have a DSN line available immediate commercial access to an operator in Germany, who will then connect them to the appropriate DSN number in Europe. “We realized that some people stateside not used to calling overseas are put off by foreign access

codes and country codes,” said U.S. Army Europe Chief of Public Affairs Bryan Hilferty. “I know I was.” “So we designed this system to encourage communication with incoming Soldiers and families, as well as with U.S. citizens or researchers who have questions about the Army in Europe,” Hilferty continued. “However, you still need to know the unit you want to connect with, or their DSN number, or the operator cannot complete the call. And remember, the Army in Europe is six hours ahead of the east coast, so best to call us when

it is morning in the U.S.” Callers must pay commercial calling costs to the Maryland 301 area code, but there are no overseas calling charges, and the number is accessible from any phone. This number is for official use only — not for “morale and welfare calls,” to access a civilian number, or for other personal use. Furthermore, the primary method for official communications remains DSN or e-mail. For more information, e-mail ocpa.pi@eur.army.mil or call 06221-57-7270.

Kim Gaston uses a kick board to work on strengthening her legs May 25 at the Ramstein Aquatic Center. She took up swimming to help battle multiple sclerosis and became the first adult to reach 200,000 meters in the center’s Swim Challenge for 2012.

Swimmer with MS hits distance marks Story and photo by Master Sgt. Jim Fisher USAFE Public Affairs Moments after Kim Gaston enters the pool, she is cutting through the water and looking entirely comfortable. Her placid demeanor and status as the first adult to break 200,000 meters at the Ramstein Aquatic Center make it hard to believe that as recently as December 2011, she struggled to make it across the pool. “It was exhausting initially, but after a few weeks I was swimming 3 to 4,000 meters a day,” Gaston said. “I didn’t concentrate on how long it took me, it was just about getting across the pool — one step at a time, one lap at a time.” Gaston was driven by the same goals that cause many people to start fitness regimens — to lose weight, increase her fitness level and adapt a healthier lifestyle. What caused her to stick with it was the impact of living healthier and fighting multiple sclerosis. After living with the condition for seven years, she began to realize that medication, however effective, would not be enough. Though she had minimal symptoms for the first five years after her diagnosis in 2003, the disease has cast a longer, darker shadow across her life in recent years. “I was doing extremely well, and then my husband deployed in 2008, and the stress of having him gone for a really long time brought on a relapse and it caused a cervical-spinal lesion, which caused tingling in my whole body, a burning sensation in my back and my left leg became kind of numb and very weak,” Gaston said. MS occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the myelin sheath surrounding axons, which nerve cells use to communicate, and can cause scar tissue (lesions) on the brain and spinal chord, limiting neurological function. A majority of sufferers, Gaston included, have the relapsing-remitting subtype of MS, she said. A relapse can be characterized by a period of attack where scar tissue is developing. As relapses began to occur, Gaston learned she

had to do more to endure and/or prevent them. But first, she dismayed. “I kept getting depressed because with every relapse, it was more confirmation that, ‘Hey, you have an incurable disease, and it’s not going anywhere.’ So I turned to food and gained a significant amount of weight. After a few more relapses I figured I had better do something soon,” she said. Gaston read that being physically fit helped in fighting against MS, and that if the attacks weakened muscular function, it was imperative to have “the least possible amount of weight to carry around.” Her son Bobby, a high school student and member of the Kaiserslautern Kingfish swim team, encouraged her to get into the pool. Even though she hadn’t swam a lap since being on the swim team in sixth grade, she knew she had to act. Swimming also made sense since it was a way to be active without raising the body’s core temperature, a factor that can contribute to relapse. In November 2011, she decided to combine two projects: the Southside Fitness Center’s Biggest Loser Competition and the aquatic center’s Swim Challenge. A little more than six months later, Gaston has achieved success. She won the Biggest Loser Competition, dropping more than 40 pounds, and she reached 200,000 meters in the pool. She admits to changing eating habits only slightly, and credits swimming with the dramatic change. “It took me two or three weeks to swim 200 meters without just dying,” she said. “But soon I was swimming 3,000 to 4,000 meters a day and the weight was literally falling off me.” Gaston also took her resting heart rate down to 64 beats per minute, and strengthened her left leg to the point where it is almost equal in function to the right one. More to the point, her last MRI showed no new lesions. “I really have great hope for the future,” Gaston said. “When I was diagnosed, I cried for three days. But at this point, I am doing exceptionally well.” The aquatic center staff was encouraging, from the front desk to the lifeguards. Gaston said every-

one took time to check on her progress and encourage her along the way. Known for his positivity, aquatic programmer Brian Stephens was no exception. “The staff has been really great. And then Brian was just fantastic. Every time I was swimming he would come by and give me a high five and ask me how many meters I had swam that day, and this was just such a motivating factor. I absolutely adore the staff,” Gaston said. Stephens said Gaston exemplifies what the aquatic center is all about. “We are here to help people not only enjoy themselves, but enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. When we see someone working toward improving their fitness, we feel like their success is our success. Kim is a great example of that. Seeing her doing what she’s doing makes us want to come to work every day,” he said. “And she’s not the only one. We have a number of people who are following her toward these distance goals. It’s great to see.” Several other swimmers have recently passed the 100,000-meter mark for 2012: Lt. Col. John Walton, Dr. Julie Gorsky, Dennis and Elaine Edwards, and Lt. Col. Dave Wetlesen. Those goals are continuing to stretch out. Gaston said she hopes to reach 300,000 meters before summer is over, and half a million meters by year’s end. She also hopes that her story can serve to encourage others to get in the water, and to show that not all stories about MS are negative. “I try to encourage people to go to the pool and not to let excuses keep them from taking action on self-improvement,” Gaston said. “When I started, I spent a lot of money on a swim dress to conceal my problem areas. Then I got out there and I realized no one cared what I looked like, they were all out there to swim, just like me. Now I admire those people just starting out. They inspire me.” They, in-turn, might be inspired by Gaston. Her comfort in the water is a testament to the fitness and confidence that early hard work has achieved — so is her beaming smile.

The Pikes are back! The Pikes are back in the second league! After a one-year hiatus from the second highest division in the German American Football League, the Pikes return to GFL 2 with high expectations. “We expect to compete for the league title,” said head coach Jason Nowlin. “I think to a man we would be disappointed if we aren’t in the position to claim the league come September.” Last year the Pikes competed in the Regional Center Division (third league) and dominated the competition to a perfect 10-0 record, which included a 27-0 win over the Frankfurt Universe in what ended up being a championship game, due in fact that both teams came into the last game of the year at 9-0. This season the Pikes have started off strong with a 2-0 start with road wins over Darmstadt and Holzgerlingen, two of the leagues preseason favorites. “We’re definitely happy with our start, though we have a lot to improve on. But anytime you can win on the road, it’s a major advantage when trying to compete for a league title,” Nowlin said. Most of last year’s championship team is still intact, including Fan Choice Player of the Year, Tech. Sgt. Eric Walton. Last season, Walton rushed for a team record 2,600 yards and 31 touchdowns and is already off to a good start with 344 yards rushing and three touchdowns through two games this season. The defense will again be anchored down by linebackers Kamil Mazur and Master Sgt. Brian Watkins. Last season the Pikes defense only gave up an average of 4.7 points a game in the second half, which included seven shutouts. At the present time, the Kaiserslautern Pikes have the second longest regular season winning streak in Germany at 12 games. The Pikes will kick off their seventh game home slate with a return trip from the Darmstadt Diamonds Saturday. Currently, the Diamonds sit at 0-2 losing another close game this past weekend 23-17, as they were stopped at the 1-yard line as time expired. They will then return to Schulzentrum Süd July 7 to play the Nuremberg Rams. K-Town was victorious in their second game versus the Holzgerlingen Twisters back on May 26, 18-14. The game came down to the final seconds as the Twisters drove the ball inside the Pikes 20 only to have a pass attempt intercepted in the end zone by Thilo Asel to seal the win for the visiting Pikes. Walton led a 266-yard rushing attack with 197 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was led by Mazur who had seven tackles and LuKas Mertens with five tackles and two tackles for loss. 86th WSA beats 609th NSS in intramural softball game by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Wing Staff Agency crushed the 690th Network Support Squadron 17-9 in an intramural softball game May 31 at Ramstein’s Southside Fitness Center. With two wins under their belt, the WSA is currently undefeated. “We are off to a great start,” said James Annison, interim coach and left-fielder. “I am delighted and ecstatic in how this season has begun for us.” For the next game, it’s Annison’s goal for the team to work on communication. “Our communication is good, however, it can always be better,” he said. “Each of us needs to let each other know where they are going to be. Teams that don’t communicate don’t do well.” The NSS had solid hitting and good fielding but still came up short. “The first two teams were great and in this last game we struggled to get that lead,” Annison said. “If we play teams like this all season we are going to have to work hard to come out on top. We have a level-headed team and I know we will do our best.” Winning is great, but it is important to remember why intramural sports are played. “It’s a great opportunity to have fun and enjoy ourselves,” said Michael Powell, outfielder for the WSA. “It’s a good chance to come together with people we don’t normally work with, have a good time and get some good PT in while we’re at it.” The WSA is very humble, Annison said. They don’t throw the win in everyone’s face. “We wouldn’t have had our wins without our great support system,” Annison said. “I want to applaud them and thank everyone one of them who came out to support the team, either by stepping up and playing or cheering on the team. It means a lot.” As WSA’s next month’s games are played at Kapaun Air Station, the team gears up for whatever is thrown at them.

Snow White and the Huntsman (PG13) — Snow White is the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman dispatched to kill her. Starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. Wrath of the Titans (PG-13) — A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus — the demigod son of Zeus — is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son,

Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the Gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the Gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son Ares switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda, Poseidon’s son Argenor, and fallen god Hephaestus, Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind. Starring Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson.
