COMMENTARY:

Today, we honor the nearly one million military spouses for their service and sacrifice for our Nation. They are resilient. They are courageous. Like our service members, they make our country stronger.

Through long tours, frequent moves, and constant demands, these men and women remain unwavering, representing the very best of our American spirit. They step up to care for their fellow military families and friends during deployments, often singlehandedly doing the job of two parents. They make incredible contributions to our country and communities, even as they shoulder the unique demands of military life. They exude patience and selflessness during uncertainty and unpredictability. In ways big and small,

military spouses answer the call to serve every day — acting as both the backbone of their families and the steel spine of our Nation. We owe them. As a Nation, we have only one truly sacred obligation: to prepare those we send into harm’s way and to care for them and their families while they are deployed and when they come home. That is why, last year, I signed an Executive Order that established the most comprehensive set of administrative actions in our country’s history to support the economic security of military and veteran spouses, caregivers, and survivors. It directs all Federal agencies to do more to retain military spouses through flexible poli-

cies, enables spouses to seek advice on overseas employment issues through military legal assistance offices for the first time, and helps military spouses maintain their careers — including by improving access to quality, dependable, and affordable child care.

My Administration has also expanded the Military Parental

flexible, transferable, and remote job opportunities for military spouses so they can balance the demands of military life while building sustainable, long-term careers. We are working to ensure that military spouses and families have access to health and wellness resources.

We owe them.

Leave Program, ensuring that service members have the time they need with their families after a child’s birth, adoption, or placement in long-term foster care.

Through the First Lady’s Joining Forces initiative, we are working with employers to create more

The English poet John Milton once wrote: “They also serve who only stand and wait.” Today and every day, let us come together to thank our military spouses. Let us honor their courage and commitment. Let us continue to meet the sacred obligation we bear to them and all those who wear the uniform. May God bless our military spouses, and may God protect

our troops.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 10, 2024, as Military Spouse Appreciation Day. I call upon the people of the United States to honor military spouses with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

HISTORY CORNER

Countdown to D-Day – 13 days

World War II glider pilots flew unpowered, unprotected aircraft, like the CG4 Waco glider or the British Horsa glider. The first glider pilots trained for only seven weeks on their aircraft, well before anyone had ever flown a glider in combat. They also received commando training, because once they landed, the pilots basically became infantry until they could get back to their units. On D-Day, the gliders cut loose from their towing C-47 close to midnight. They had no lights, no support, and no parachutes if something went wrong. They flew at 500 feet—close enough to be hit by small arms fire. Many landed but struck trees and other debris on the landing zone, tearing apart the wood-and-canvas aircraft. The glider pilots delivered vital cargo, such as Jeeps, ammunition, combat gear, and additional paratroopers. The 435th lost ten glider pilots killed in action during D-Day.

US Air Force, Army conduct HIMARS load training exercise with Tunisian air force

Tunisian air force and U.S. Air Force loadmasters secure a M142 High Mobility

onto a Tunisian C-130J Super Hercules aircraft at Ramstein Air Base, May 4. The joint load training kicked off African Lion, U.S. Africa Command’s largest, premier, annual exercise, hosted across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal and Tunisia, April 19 to May 31. The joint, all-domain, multi-component, and multinational exercise includes more than 8,100 participants from 27 nations, including contingents from NATO.

by 1st Lt. Mary Andom U.S. Air Forces in Europe — Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

It seemed like an impossible fit.

The U.S. Army M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System launcher slowly inched back into a Tunisian air force C-130J Super Hercules.

There was no room for error, just 108 inches or 54 on either side, for the 35,800 pound vehicle to fit snugly into the cavity of a “Herc.” The air hissed as the tires deflated, a Soldier perched on the hood of the chassis carefully scrutinizing the height with a yellow measuring tape.

The coordinated effort brought together Tunisian and U.S. Air Force loadmasters along with U.S.

Army HIMARS personnel during a joint load training exercise conducted May 4 on Ramstein Air Base.

Personnel from the 37th Airlift Squadron, along with U.S. Army personnel from the 4th Battalion,133rd Field Artillery Regiment, Texas Army National Guard, and the Tunisian Air Force trained on the proper procedures for loading and lifting HIMARS onto a C-130J.

“Loading a HIMARS isn’t necessarily difficult but with minimal experience it can be challenging,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Brayden T. Allen, 37th AS C-130J instructor loadmaster. “The vehicle is quite tall and heavy so it’s important to make sure you drive it

into the cargo compartment of the aircraft in a slow and controlled manner to ensure the safety of the personnel and equipment involved in loading and downloading.”

The HIMARS rocket artillery system is a light multiple rocket launcher mounted on a truck frame carrying six rockets. Manned by a three-person crew consisting of a commander, driver and gunner, the system can be transported easily aboard C-130 and C-17 transport aircraft for rapid deployment across the world.

Before the HIMARS could be loaded onto the aircraft, it required expert precision in weight and balance computation, as well as calculating the center of gravity. The 435th Contingency Response Squadron here provided training to the Tunisian air force C-130J aircrew prior to the load.

“It is vital to have the proper documentation and ensure all safety procedures are followed,” said 1st Lt. Miguel Verduzco, 4-133rd FAR unit movement officer. “If this is incorrect, it could be a matter of life or death.”

For U.S. Army Sgt. Erica Nieto, a HIMARS gunner assigned to the 4-133rd FAR, the exercise provided invaluable hands-on training and proficiency in airlift and air mobility support operations.

“This is my first time overseas

Army

and it feels amazing to be a part of this mission. I get the ability to test my skills and build my confidence outside of home station,” said Nieto. “This is a great opportunity to practice airlift operations and HIMARS Rapid Aerial Infiltration with the U.S. and Tunisian air force.”

African Lion aims to strengthen interoperability among participants and build readiness to respond to crises and contingencies in Africa and around the world. This year marks the exercise’s 20th anniversary.

Exercise activities will include a command post exercise, field training exercises, a live-fire demonstration and humanitarian demonstration and humanitarian civic assistance program events. Additionally, humanitarian civic assistance missions will feature a combination of medical, dental and veterinary assistance and exchanges across Morocco, Ghana and Senegal.

86th Medical Group, US service members complete Vigorous Warrior 24

BAKONYKÚTI TRAINING AREA, HUNGARY

– A U.S. contingent of 50 personnel participated in Vigorous Warrior 24 May 3-8, at Bakonykúti Training Area, Hungary.

Vigorous Warrior is NATO’s largest medical exercise, with this iteration uniting more than 1,600 participants from 33 countries to exercise experimental doctrinal concepts and test their medical assets together in a dynamic, multinational environment.

Training opportunities such as VW24 allow U.S. service members to interact and operate alongside NATO Allies and partners, bolstering relationships and helping to solidify tactics to better prepare NATO’s medical community as a whole for responses to crises and contingencies.

“It really helps to demonstrate NATO’s resoluteness as an alliance,” said Col. Steven Lehr, U.S. Air Forces Europe - Air Forces Africa command surgeon. “If you look at VW and the

commitment by the partners out here, there is no better demonstration of how strong we are when we go together.”

The primary U.S. Air Force presence incorporated medics in a range of specialties from the 86th Medical Group and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

Together with representation from the U.S. Army, Belgian Armed Forces and Slovakian Armed Forces, the group erected and operated a Role 2 Enhanced Expeditionary Medical Support System. The configuration included command and control, an emergency room, an intensive care unit, an operating room, and an outbound patient area, with additional support for pediatric care, women’s health practices, veterinary care, dentistry and pharmacy.

“This is the facility we would expect to operate in a contested environment,” said Staff Sgt. Jet Olonan, 86th MDG Flight and Operational Medicine medical technician.

“We can arrive on scene, be fully functional within 12 hours, and be able to triage a popu-

lation at risk of up to 3,000.”

The foremost objectives of VW24 were to plan and manage the continuity of medical care in a NATO article V scenario, exercise a complex medical structure able to handle large numbers of casualties and test patient tracking procedures in a multinational joint environment.

The U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Surgeon General plans office enhanced training opportunities during the exercise by incorporating additional injects to further test the EMEDS capabilities and target U.S.-specific goals.

“Ultimately, the goal is to provide as realistic training as possible. We contributed to that with our high-fidelity casualty simulators,” said Staff Sgt. Alyssa Haskew-Smith, 86th Healthcare Operations Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of readiness training. “By incorporating these scenarios we amplify the level of care that our medics need to exercise while fueling the operations tempo to create a more stressful environment.”

Between exercise-led and internal injects, the training audience encountered 143 casualties. Patient injuries ranged from dog bites and simple ailments to traumatic brain injuries and amputations.

“The variety of injuries we see during these exercises prepares us for many of the things we can expect to see during a real-world medical response,” said Chief Master Sgt. Tyler Meyenburg, 86th MDG senior enlisted leader. “It’s impossible to predict everything, so we try to be ready for anything within our scope of medical care capabilities.”

Additional breakout sessions alongside training audiences from Spain, Belgium and Canada allowed for cross-sharing of knowledge which will reinforce lessons learned and can be used to complement U.S. medical skill sets.

“Watching our partner nations come together was a great opportunity for us to learn from them and them from us,” said Col. Dwayne Baca, 86th MDG commander. “I’m very proud of our medics as they come out here and showcase what they do every day.”

Making RAB better, faster, lighter through Hercules Innovation Lab

37 AS honors culture with Asian American, Pacific Islander Heritage Month flight

Imagine a neglected community garden. Overgrown weeds spill over the sides of wooden garden boxes and vines crawl up wire fencing while broken tools lay strewn about the ground.

The garden brings both a challenge and an opportunity. Despite limited resources, passionate residents come together to revive it. Through volunteer efforts and creative solutions like harvesting rainwater, installing a proper irrigation system, and improving the existing foundation they transform the garden into a source of affordable, nutritious food.

Some people might think innovating involves complex processes and knowledge beyond their scope, when the reality is anyone can innovate at any level. At Ramstein Air Base, this is where the 86th Airlift Wing Hercules Innovation Lab comes in.

“Better, faster, lighter is the goal here,” said Wesley Simmons, 86th AW HIL chief of innovation. “Most of the time innovation excels and thrives when you don’t have the resources that you feel like you need.”

The HIL actively seeks opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce

costs and save man-hours when performing day-to-day tasks for units across Ramstein AB. Simmons hopes to instill the importance of innovation as a way of life on base by offering a plethora of resources for Ramstein Airmen.

“When you think about STEM and innovation it’s about creativity. All that comes down to is operationalizing your passions,” said Simmons. “If I can find someone that codes and makes video games on the weekends, then they can use our resources and relate that process to automate business operations.”

One of the HIL’s many success stories is U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Shane Roy, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron vehicle maintenance apprentice. Roy came to the HIL in search of a way to prevent rain and other elements from getting into de-icing truck fixtures. Roy noticed a pattern of having to fix broken de-icer fixtures during winter months due to precipitation collecting in the nozzle and the freezing, causing cracks and other damage.

Through the help of the HIL, Roy was able to design, print and implement a plastic cap to go over the nozzles to prevent future damage, allowing those man-hours to be put toward more critical tasks and allow the de-icers to operate

optimally at any given time.

The HIL is always looking for people from across the base with coding expertise or those interested in the development of new ideas, putting the capabilities and talents of Ramstein’s Airmen to use.

Ultimately, the innovation lab aims to enhance squadron workflows across the installation by exploring the integration of commercial software platforms. One of the platforms allows for modeling, rendering and animating 3D creations, while the other provides real-time development for crafting interactive 3D and 2D experiences.

Simmons hopes the new software and other resources the lab provides will encourage Airmen to find creative solutions to challenges they may face or will provide an avenue to enhance existing processes.

The HIL at Ramstein AB showcases the power of collaboration and innovation by driving efficiency and cost-saving measures across base operations. Through initiatives like integrating commercial platforms and creating inexpensive, 3D printed devices the base is able to harness the diverse talents of Airmen and continues to foster a culture of innovation and creative problem solving.

Historic milestone for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s

Baumholder Youth Sports and Fitness:

“This is Baumholder!”

Over 300 sports registrations

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder Youth Sports & Fitness Child and Youth Services, located on Wetzel Kaserne Baumholder, has reached a historic milestone this past winter season, surpassing 300 sports registrations.

This achievement highlights the team’s dedication to delivering outstanding sports and fitness programs for the military community stationed in and around Baumholder.

According to Marcel Fisher, Youth Sports & Fitness director, achieving this feat after over a decade speaks volumes about the collective effort invested in promoting a healthy and active youth community.

“The credit is due to a collaborative effort involving the Baumholder Youth Sports team, Army and Air Force patrons, volunteer coaches, and fellow Family Morale, Welfare, and Recreation staff.”

This season saw the Baumholder team expanding its sports offerings, reaching out to Air Force neighbors in Ramstein. Notably, they introduced an expansive swimming program for ages 5-15, becoming the sole provider of such a program in the entire USAG-RP area. The inclusion of homeschool children further diversified their participant base.

Traditional programs like basketball and cheerleading for ages 5-15 continued to thrive, with significant turnout attributed to dedicated volunteer coaches. The introduction of the Start Smart program, offering basketball and yoga for ages 3-4, led by Fitness Specialist Andhia Campos, added to the program’s appeal.

Fisher emphasized their commitment to maximizing resources while ensuring a fun experience for all participants. The addition of a bowling clinic instructed by Assistant Director Jahad Ghafari and an exciting wall

climbing program on Ramstein received overwhelmingly positive feedback, prompting a follow-up clinic, and catering to a broader demographic.

Fisher credited the rise in youth enrollment over the past 15 years to the team’s ability to adapt to and address the evolving needs and preferences of the community. The revamping of the swimming program, in collaboration with the Aquatics Center team, resulted in the highest number of swimming registrations for USAG-RP’s Youth Sports & Fitness team in 15 years.

The success of the Baumholder Youth Sports & Fitness team serves as an inspiration, showcasing the positive impact that dedicated sports and fitness programs can have on fostering camaraderie, resilience, and well-being among service members and their families.

This achievement holds particular significance given the size of the current community compared to the last time such success was achieved in 2009 when Baumholder was its own Garrison.

The achievement of the Baumholder Youth Sports & Fitness team goes beyond numbers; it showcases the impact of teamwork and commitment in fostering a healthier, more resilient community.

As the team looks ahead, they remain committed to building on this momentum and continuing to provide exceptional sports and fitness opportunities for the USAG-RP community.

MAY the FOURTH be WITH YOU! USAG Rheinland- Pfalz’s Star Wars celebration draws over 450 fans for

‘May the 4th Strongcon’ event

The Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare & Recreation, U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz, hosted a ‘May the 4th Strongcon,’ Star Wars convention at Armstrong’s Club, May 4-5.

Over 450 fans of all ages came together to celebrate “May the 4th” and immerse themselves in the captivating universes of galaxies far, far away. ‘Star Wars Day’ on May the 4th yearly is a day for fans to celebrate all things Star Wars by re-watching the movies, dressing up as their favorite characters, and participating in Star Wars-themed events and activities.

“May the 4th be with you” is a popular catchphrase used by fans of the Star Wars franchise that plays on the famous line, “May the Force be with you,” often used as a blessing or farewell in the series.

Jemal Hutson, Armstrong’s Club business manager, DFMWR, said he was very happy with the event’s turnout.

“The participants really loved the trivia contests, the vendors, and the costume contest,” said Hutson. “We plan to maintain these highlights for next year’s event. Additionally, we’re exploring ways to incorporate more German vendors alongside our community vendors.”

The event featured a wide range of activities, including cosplay contests, merchandise vendors with comics, toys, games, anime and

other collectibles, themed trivia contests with prizes, art exhibits, face painting, photos with Star Wars characters, a gaming room with free board game and trading card game demonstrations for all ages, and more.

Hutson mentioned that the event vendors achieved excellent sales. The book seller sold out of all their books, and the artist creating fan art had only a couple of pictures left by the end of the two days.

“All vendors achieved strong sales and were very happy with their results,” he said.

Hutson shared that he recently learned about a Star Trek fan club with members who also enjoy participating in conventions like these, so going forward, his team will be sure to extend invitations to the Star Trek fan club as well.

“We’ll aim to schedule the event when even more fan club members with great costumes can participate,” he said. “Given that May 4th was already heavily booked for many Star Wars cosplayers, we’ll consider alternative dates.”

And for next year Hutson said that Armstrong’s Club is planning to engage with Outdoor Recreation and other are organizations to gather ideas for additional activities to offer, focusing especially on options for children attending the event.

ABC IN KMC: Hambach

Many in the Kaiserslautern Military Community may already be familiar with cozy Neustadt/Weinstrasse with its small alley ways and semi-timbered medieval buildings, its spacious market square with St. Ägidius Church and picturesque courtyards where you can sip a glass of wine.

But, did you know that Neustadt also has a section up on a hill surrounded by vineyards? And, that it houses a castle with great historical significance in German and European history?

Hambach Castle and its history are regarded as the “cradle of German democracy” and the first black, red and gold flag was hoisted there on May 27, 1832. At that time about 30,000 people gathered on the mountain to advocate for a rule of law, national unity, civil liberties, and European solidarity. The event that drew men and women of all classes demanding freedom of expression, freedom of the press and freedom of association became known as the Hambach Festival and was the first step on a long road to the development of German and European democracy.

The year 1816 brought about significant territorial changes to (today’s) RheinlandPfalz region and was transferred to the King of Bavaria. At that time, Germany was split into a number of smaller kingdoms or duchies, and people lacked a sense of unity. Failed harvests threatening the existence of farmers and wine growers in a mainly agricultural area plus customs regulations for exports (to homeland Bavaria) eventually led to unrest by the 1830s. In addition, political, economic and wide-

spread social discontent contributed to the great mobilization of the Hambach Festival.

Critical opinions and political demands were censored, and journalists and lawyers called for a united German state and constitution. The most important initiative that led to the Hambach Festival was the “German Fatherland Association in Support of Free Press” with its two main goals national unity and freedom of the press.

The association was founded in January 1832 and quickly gained momentum. Friedrich Schüler, head of the liberal opposition in Bavarian parliament, was successful in limiting Bavaria’s policy of censorship. Journalist Jakob Siebenpfeiffer and others joined the association, which quickly grew to 5,000 members, many of them from Neustadt.

Originally a celebration in honor of the Bavarian constitution was planned at Hambach Castle on May 26, 1832. On short notice Siebenpfeiffer rededicated the event and instead spread a public petition and extended an invitation to a “Festival of Hope” on May 27, intended to “shake off inner and outer violence and strive for lawful freedom and German national dignity.”

The petition was signed by 32 citizens of Neustadt who organized the festival. The Bavarian government’s attempt to stop the festival with a ban backlashed due to the journalistic outcry of the liberaldemocratic opposition and unintentionally even led to further mobilization of citizen discontent with the political, economic and social situation.

Siebenpfeiffer explicitly invited and encouraged women to actively participate in the event, something that was by no means a matter of course at the time.

The invitation read: “German women and maidens, whose political disregard in the European order is a mistake and a stain, adorn and enliven the gathering with your presence!”

Many women accepted the invitation and for most of them, it would have been the first time they took part in a political gathering. The Hambach Festival thus also marks an important step at the start of the long road to politically mobilizing women in Germany.

The festival turned out to be more of a colorful folk fest than a political gathering. Thousands accepted the invitation, there were stalls and carts selling bread, sausage, beer and wine, and even carousels were set up for three lively days.

A procession started at the market square in Neustadt in the morning and moved up the hill with the participants shouting “Hinauf, hinauf auf’s Schloss!”

A Neustadt civil guard headed the procession and was flanked by a large group of women. Students with pamphlets demanding democracy mingled in the crowd, while Johann Philipp Abresch, a businessman from Neustadt, carried a very special flag and hoisted it on the tower of the castle ruins for all to see.

The flag was evenly colored with stripes in black, red and gold, and had an inscription “Deutschland’s Wiedergeburt” (Germany’s rebirth) stitched in the middle red strip. This original flag can be seen at the permanent exhibit “Up, up to the Castle!” and to present these colors stand for a free, democratic and unified Germany.

The Hambach Festival brought people together from both near and far. Most came from the surrounding area, but many

also came from Bavaria, Württemberg, the Rhine Province, Poland, and France. They wanted the creation of a nation state, as well as mutual understanding between European nations.

There were twenty speakers throughout the event and Johann Wirth ended his with this final note: “Cheers! Three cheers for the Confederate of Europe!” He was expressing the solidarity of all peoples who fought for their freedom and national independence. This may have been the seed that implanted the idea of a unified Europe and creation of the European Union 160 years later.

The European Union currently has 27 member nations and 448 million inhabitants. This year the election for the European Parliament in Strasbourg will take place on June 9.

The vibrant site and magnificent castle that marks the history of democracy is open to visitors and features the permanent exhibit “Up, up to the Castle!”, a colorful Lego scene and interactive elements to explore in depth. The event program that includes political discussions, classical concerts, cabarets, and plays for children and adults offers just as much cultural entertainment as do lively debates. The castle garden, the Mediterranean-like panorama terrace, and Restaurant 1832 invite visitors to stroll around, discover, and enjoy. The castle garden, restaurant and castle are barrier-free.

The Hambacher Musikfest takes place from May 29 to June 2 in the castle itself, and the folk fest in Hambach “SchwarzRot-Gold” from June 14 to 16. https:// hambacher-schloss.de/entdecken/hambacher-schloss-2

With his extensive sacred works as well as his symphonic output, Anton Bruckner can be considered one of the most important composers of the late Romantic period. As a personality as well as a musician, he was initially celebrated as an organ virtuoso before also gaining recognition as one of the great symphonists after Ludwig van Beethoven. 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of his birth. To mark the occasion, the Pfalzphilharmonie KL, will perform his 4th Symphony, which the composer himself called the “Romantic”, in a special concert. Visit the Ring Mauer

This hike takes you from the Vogelweh Housing development into the woods, leading you to the remains of an ancient Roman fort called Ring Mauer. To begin this trail, you will park within the Vogelweh Housing area; just be sure not to park within designated residential spots.

Trail time is roughly four hours round trip, or two hours each way. The trail is roughly 12 kilometers long and the route has sections that are both paved and unpaved.

Explore Frankenstein Castle

There are two Frankenstein castles in Germany, but this is the one furthest to Ramstein — roughly one hour away. There is a designated parking lot at the base of the hill that provides access to the hiking trail. While it is unknown exactly which of the castles inspired the writing of Mary Shelley’s famous novel, it is known that the author spent time in many parts of Germany, especially along the Rhein River.

These ruins are accessible via a short hike up the side of the mountain, roughly fifteen to

CROSSWORD

twenty minutes each way. There are picnic areas nearby and a number of geological formations in the surrounding area. This hike is perfect for someone looking to get a little fresh air without devoting much time to a hike. There is also a restaurant on top of

the hill. https://www.frankensteinrestaurant.de

Check out Wolfstein

The destination for this hike is located a short distance away from Kaiserslautern, about a thirty-minute drive, in the village of Wolfstein. This quiet village offers a number of public parking lots within walking distance of the trail. It is the first stage of the much longer Pfaelzer Hoehenweg, including but a small portion of the 100-kilometer-long trail.

This hike is just under 12 kilometers long, looping around the town and making it a perfect hike for a day trip. The hike ends with a spectacular view of two separate castle ruins.

Hop on and Off the Palatinate Forest Trail

Any portion of this 143-kilometer-long trail would make for an excellent hike. The trail offers views of spectacular crags, deep valleys, undisturbed countryside and verdant forests. There are a number of parking areas, depending on what entry spot you choose.

Along the way, hikers can stop at the sustainability house, Haus der Nachhaltigkeit, in Johanniskreuz,

to learn more about preserving nature and the surrounding area.

The Drachenfels Ruins and the Berwartstein Castle, Germany’s only remaining currently occupied castle, are both along this route. The trail is broken into nine stages, any of which can be hiked individually or as a longer multistage hike.

Participate in Volksmarches

Our trail guide recommends that hikers just starting out opt for a Volksmarch-style hike, wherein you hike with a group along a predetermined trail. There are a number of Volksmarching groups in and around Kaiserslautern for those interested in joining.

When participating in any physical activity, hiking included, safety and preparation are of the utmost importance. Our guide recommends “bringing plenty of water and planning for changes in weather. In Germany, a sunny day can quickly turn to showers and hikers should know that before hitting the trails.” Additionally, it is important to know where you are going. “German trails are well marked,” says our guide, “but it is still a good idea to know the route you’re taking.” Doing a little research before heading out can mean the difference between a pleasant day of outdoor activity and being lost in the woods.
