ST. PATRICK'S DAY LUNCH

EXECUTIVE UPDATE This is the last article that I will be writing for Prime Connections as Executive Director of the Adult Resource Alliance. The ARAYC Board has formed a search committee and has made significant progress in identifying the right candidate to step into that leadership role. I will admit that I am stepping Mike Larson Executive Director down with mixed feelings as my passion for ARAYC’s mission has not diminished. Sometimes life simply presents us with decisions that are difficult on the one hand, but necessary, nonetheless. There are a couple of thoughts I would like to share with this final opportunity. One question we routinely ask applicants for positions at ARAYC is about their experience with seniors. Either professional or personal. It is one of my favorite questions as it often solicits some awesome stories that can be incredibly heartwarming. One I will always remember was a native American young woman who shared the significant role her grandparents had in her upbringing and the importance of elders in her culture. I am not suggesting that that you can’t do a great job at ARAYC without having your personal “senior” story, but I have found that it adds just that little additional passion and understanding. My personal story involves my parents. Both were part of that greatest generation cohort coming out of World War

II. My father was a veteran who took part in the occupation of Japan at the tail end of the war. My mother left high school early to work in a factory producing war materials. They were both proud, private, and stubbornly independent. Their life was not an easy path, which got harder when my father suffered a disabling stroke in his early fifties. They managed to persevere with some help from my sisters and I, when we were allowed in. Fast forward 20 plus years and my mother started showing signs of cognitive issues, which progressed on a steady decline. That progression wasn’t easy to track, as their private natures kept them from sharing fully with family. Eventually, it progressed beyond their ability to cover up and my mother was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia, a particularly nasty form of that disease. Eventually, she had to be placed in a care facility, something my father had promised would never happen. It was shortly after that when they both passed away only weeks apart from each other. I don’t share this to be depressing, but to impart why the mission of ARAYC is so important to me. “Our mission is to provide effective services and lead collaborative efforts to ensure seniors remain independent with the highest possible quality of life. That is a big job. But I guarantee you that our Board, staff, and volunteers all take it very seriously. We may not be perfect, but we are trying! I have no doubt whatsoever as I step away from my role at ARAYC that the commitment to that mission will not waiver. It has been a privilege to play my small part for the last five years.

FOR YOUR HEALTH

Let’s talk about speech therapy for grownups BY BRIDGET BRYANT As a speech therapist with RiverStone Health Home Care, I travel all over Yellowstone County to see patients in their own homes.

clearly. In fact, speech therapy can help with a wide variety of health conditions that are more common for adults, especially older adults.

Many people think speech therapy is mostly to help children overcome developmental challenges to learning to speak

I have treated children, but 15 of my 17 years in practice has been devoted to working with geriatric patients in their

own homes. Most of my patients are between 50 and 90 years old. Many are U.S. veterans. Speech is a complex function. It involves structures in the mouth, throat and chest. Your breathing can affect speech, and, of course, you use your brain to speak. So illnesses and injuries that affect any of these body parts or your breathing can affect your ability to say what you want to say. Sometimes patients tell me: “I know how to speak; I don’t need speech therapy.” In fact, speech therapy can improve problems caused by stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, swallowing disorders and traumatic brain injury. Some of my patients have fallen and sustained injuries that impaired their speech. People who have had surgery on their throat or neck may benefit from speech therapy.

physical therapist or occupational therapist. Family and friend caregivers can make a huge difference in how patients progress. Together, we can work on strategies to keep the patient safe. When I discharge patients, I want the patients and caregivers to feel like they have a good grasp on safety measures.

Speech therapy can improve problems caused by stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, swallowing disorders and traumatic brain injury.

No two patients are the same. Dementia patients, for example, require highly individualized care plans. Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance require a physician’s prescription to start speech therapy. When meeting a new patient, I first conduct a thorough assessment of their needs. The patient, their family caregiver and I create a plan to meet shortterm and long-term goals.

Speech therapy begins with a plan of care for weekly sessions. Patients are re-evaluated every 30 days. Medicare requires that objective measures demonstrate progress to continue paying for in-home therapy. Medicaid, Veterans Administration and private insurance requirements vary. Generally, if the patient is making progress and can benefit from continued speech therapy, weekly sessions can run for several months.

There can always be some improvement with speech therapy, although the patient may not always get back to the level they had before becoming ill or injured. The patient’s willingness to work on therapy is key in making progress. Bridget Bryant, a Billings native and licensed speech therapist, can be reached at RiverStone Health Home Care, 406.651.6500.

Safety is the No. 1 priority. I may set up visual aids to remind dementia patients of routine things they need to do. I do lots of visual and cognitive exercises with the patient and develop cues designed for where the patient is with memory and cognition. It’s like physical therapy for your brain. I work with other professionals on the Home Care team to meet all of the patient’s home healthcare needs. My patients often are receiving visits from a Home Care nurse, www.allianceyc.org // Adult Resource Alliance

Sometimes in life you run across someone who stands out, not because they would ever want to be noticed, but because they quietly just keep showing up! Vicki, our Volunteer Coordinator recently came across some figures while compiling a report and we were astonished by what she found. Jere and his wife Bonnie began volunteering together in 2002 after retiring from long careers in law enforcement. They filled their days volunteering, and even after Bonnie’s passing, Jere continues to volunteer to this day. I want to try to share some of his volunteer history because it is truly remarkable, and this is only what we have documented! 10

Adult Resource Alliance’s Meals on Wheels Program (MOW) offers a hot nutritious meal to those over 60 years of age who are homebound. They are delivered by volunteers, Monday through Friday between 10:00 and 12:30. Meals are available on a shortterm basis for persons recovering from a hospital stay or surgery until the person is no longer homebound. If a person is able to prepare their own meals, or lives with someone who can prepare their meals you may be denied.

SPRING! This is my favorite time of year! It always brings the hope of warm sunshine, green grass, flowers, and good roads. Our drivers did an amazing job this winter. They truly are such great people who care deeply about our homebound participants. What is it that they say? “There is a season for everything, and we’re just glad that winter is in the rear-view mirror.” I assume that most of us are happy to have the warmer months ahead, well at least until we reach the 100’s! What are some things we can look forward to? Wearing sweaters instead of parkas, Daylight Savings Time, the sound of birds singing, St. Patrick’s Day, corned beef and cabbage, Easter, the beautiful flowers poking out of the ground, being the April Fools trickster or watching for one, and maybe even a few showers to help everything grow and come to life. Such a wonderful time of year. Wow, Jere, talk about a lifetime of serving others! Think of all the lives you have touched along the way. The Adult Resource Alliance, all the friends you have made here, and many other nonprofits throughout our community continue to be blessed by your service. Thank you, Jere!

Wishing you all a beautiful Spring

LIFE’S Observations… Jimmy Buffett's song, Trip Around the Sun seems strangely fatalistic, even foreboding. Most of his songs feel more like being on the cusp of a four day weekend with no ambitious plans beyond tidying up the living room or perhaps alphabetizing the spice cabinet. So, perhaps I should consider what external forces may be working David Mosdal Guest Columnist on me to think that Jimmy was feeling down. He certainly made Key West Casual look intriguing, even inviting over the last forty years or so. As I write this, I'm contemplating yet another below-zero January day and wondering what the weather will be in March and April when this article appears in the Prime Connections magazine. Days pass and weeks pass and, sure enough, another year has gone by and we've made another trip around the sun. I guess those external forces are just the passage of time. Most of my readers know that 2023 was kind of a hard reset year for us. On July 6th, I had a total knee replacement. It was healing pretty much on schedule until I contracted West Nile Virus eight weeks later on the Labor Day weekend. After five days in the hospital, I spent the rest of the year shuffling from my bed to my recliner, with occasional stints on my exercise bike, hoping to put the run on this pesky virus. Much of my thinking time in the last six months has been in coming to terms with what is likely the “fourth quarter” of my efforts here on the planet. If I use my time well, I might even get a chance to go into overtime. So, to keep my mind active during my convalescence, I read a lot of books. This House of Sky, by Ivan Doig was a pure truth to read. It was the chronicle of his trying childhood and early adulthood. These stories took place on sheep camps in the Big Belts and in drafty, too-small houses from Ringling to White Sulphur Springs. Doig grew up there in the 1930's and 40's in what was “next year country” as much as any you'll find in Montana. I recommend the book and the author. He talks like the people we grew up listen18

ing to, from the top of the stairs, when our folks thought we were fast asleep in our beds. Most of the other books I read dealt more with the concerns about, and reactions to, our current social climate. No doubt, when things are in an uproar in Washington, there is no shortage of opinions about how to fix it. Richard Dryfuss (former award winning actor) wrote One Thought Scares Me... commiserating the belief that our education system has become lax over the last 50 years in teaching our children Civics and other Government classes. If done right, maybe our kids could understand better than their parents how a democratic republic can and should function. A Government “for all” is not just for one political party or another. It's FOR ALL. I'd say the writing style of Mr. Dryfuss is bombastic, but his observations are worthy of consideration. The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens, was written by Richard Haass, who was a Washington insider through several administrations. He has a pedigree like a blonde, long-haired dog wafting it's way around the arena of the American Kennel Club finals. However, he makes some solid points: If we're going to make a big clamor about RIGHTS, we better consider what OBLIGATIONS accompany those rights. Perhaps my favorite book among the others that I read was written by David Brooks entitled How to Know a Person. I like this exhaustive study because it solidly supports my Homesteader Ethic: That is, our homesteading ancestors learned that they had to get along with their neighbors because those neighbors could be responsible for literally saving your life someday. In so many words, my Grandparents all taught us kids that lesson for life. By the way, for my next Trip Around the Sun, I'm driving my school bus again. Sometimes a bus driver can show kids a brand new path to explore. I love it!

Driving With Dogs/ One More Candle By Jackie Swiesz

secretly, we wish we could hang our head out the window, just for the pure joy of feeling the wind in our hair?

We’ve all seen them; most of us have been one of them – those people who insist on taking their dogs with them in the car and on outings of any kind. You see them everywhere: in town, on the highway, going to the grocery store – you name it, there is a doggy companion with their person in all kinds of scenarios: sitting in the front seat on the passenger side, popping a Great Dane head out of the sunroof, or a Yorkie on a motorcycle with his Master, sitting in front wearing goggles! We all know that dogs ARE man’s best friend, that they wiggle their way into our hearts and become one of the family, but what is the attraction of driving with dogs? Is it because, 20

MARCH/APRIL 2024

Our fur-babies teach us to live in the moment and just enjoy the ride on our trips around the sun. This year, Darby, my Wheaten Terrier, celebrated her birthday cake with 14 candles. That’s a lot in dog years – 98 to be exact. But she doesn’t seem phased by that at all. We still go for rides and visit our friends and family. She’s taught me so much about cherishing them and experiencing life to the fullest. Things like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Take naps. Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Be loyal.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently. Due to her age and need for more TLC, Darby and I have regular visits with our veterinarian. Recently, we were sitting in the lobby waiting our turn, when a young boy (I guessed he was about six years old) and his dad walked out from the exam room with their dog, a chocolate Lab with a grey chin. Dad had tears in his eyes. They’d just found out that Gus wasn’t going to make it much longer. The boy looked up at his dad and said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' Startled, Dad simply nodded his head and gazed down at his son. “Well,” the boy continued, “dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'' This little boy’s wisdom changed the way I think about my own aging process. Like Jimmy Buffet’s song lyrics, although I didn’t see it coming, I found myself wondering where the time went. Now, I celebrate every trip around the sun and happily collect my birthday souvenir – another candle! www.allianceyc.org // Adult Resource Alliance

“It’s Never too Late to Get Fit” By Jon Stepanek

YMCA Fitness Instructor Berte Heath has two health and wellness principles. It’s never too late to start and you’re never done. Heath brings those ideals to every class she teaches at the Y and the Billings Community and Senior Center. At the age of 78 she is leading over a dozen classes a week. And she loves every one of them. “I became a certified instructor at 60 years old and it’s my passion”, said Heath. “Seniors have to feel like they’re doing something good for themselves, and they need to take care of each other.” Most seniors are physically compromised in some way. People in the Enhanced Fitness class suffer from dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and arthritis and joint pain. Heath says during class, even for just an hour, they seem to forget about pain.

to their ability to do the exercises.

Enhanced Fitness is a free program offered 3 days a week with help from a grant from the United Way.

The end goal is to help seniors live an independent life for as long as possible.

Around 20 people go through a series of stretches and strength training, sprinkled with encouragement and humor. The class gives their instructor high marks.

The group enjoys each other’s company. Along with exercise they talk about the weather and how they’re getting along. They complain about aches and pains, but share plenty of laughs. It gets them out and about with social interaction.

Robert says, “I really appreciate our instructor and her positive, motivating examples.” Dorothy comments, “I didn’t realize I would be joining a family of compassionate people”. Luciele said, “I can actually feel muscles I didn’t know I had! Berte gives good instruction and motivation.” Heath says she wants her class to know about muscle groups and how they work together. She focuses on basic moves of standing tall, squatting to pick something up, and sit to stand moves. She works on balance and core strength. Everyone works at their own pace and they adapt

Aging Mastery Playbook Brought to you by the National Council on Aging Part 1 of a Part 4 Series: Overview

Live Well. Do Well. Age Well. Aging Mastery aims to help millions of baby boomers and older adults take key steps to improve their wellbeing, add stability to their lives, and strengthen their ties to communities. Individuals create their own playbook for aging well via actionable goals, sustainable behaviors, social engagement, and gratitude.

What is Aging Mastery? Aging Mastery is a comprehensive and fun approach to living that celebrates the gift of longevity. Central to the Aging Mastery philosophy is the belief that modest lifestyle changes can produce big results and that people can be empowered to cultivate health and longevity.

Why is Aging Mastery Important? Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the past 50 years, yet societal expectations of older adults have changed little. Also, people are generally unprepared for 28

MARCH/APRIL 2024

this increased longevity. Aging Mastery guides individuals through this phase of life. The suite of products incorporates evidence-informed materials with inspiration and small nudges to give people the skills and tools they need to achieve measurable improvements in managing their health, remaining economically secure, and contributing actively in society. All materials and resources align with the goal of helping people enjoy self-sufficient lives.

CARETIME Caregiver Support Group PLEASE REMEMBER YOU MUST RSVP PRIOR TO ATTENDANCE (NO LATER THAN THE DAY BEFORE THE MEETING). WHEN YOU RSVP, PLEASE SPECIFY WHICH LOCATION YOU WILL BE ATTENDING. Contact Kylie at 406-259-5212.

Celebrate the gift of longevity! As children, we are taught how to be successful adults. By contrast, no one teaches us how to age well. As a result, most are unprepared for this new stage in life. James Firman, EdD and Susan Stiles, PhD designed the Aging Mastery Playbook to be a springboard to help us focus on positive behaviors that will enable new realities of aging. By looking at what is within our control to change, we can take steps to better our lives and motivate us to help others. We will cover the six dimensions of Aging Well: Gratitude and Mindfulness; Health and Well-Being; Finances and Future Planning; Connections and Community; Learning and Creativity; and, Legacy and Purpose.

Virtual and call-in options available if you are unable to attend in-person.

HUNTLEY SENIOR CENTER

37 Minecha Avenue • Reservations: (406)698-6525 1st and 3rd Thursday at 12:00

Winter—We get a chance to enjoy the inside of our homes as the snow and cold bring much needed nutrients to our soil. Spring— Time to plant, enjoy the green grass and leaves. Summer— Enjoy the beautiful outdoors, watch our planting become flowers and vegetables. Fall—Time to harvest our vegetables and watch the leaves turn into beautiful colors. Living in our beautiful state of Montana is truly experiencing life and a trip around the sun. There is nothing we can do to change the seasons, but there is no way I would want it any different. Huntley Seniors meet the first and third Thursday of the month, please feel free to join us for lunch, enjoy some great conversations and make new friends. We do 50/50 on the first Thursday of the month and Bingo on the second Thursday of the month.

5541 Haynes Road • Reservations: 406-696-1343 • Wednesday at 12:00 Well, as predicted, Ol’ Man Winter arrived with a vengeance! This ol’ trip round the sun has been enjoyed by many who put a sprig of laughter into their moments to combat the winter blues: throwing boiling water into the air, free snow shoveling classes, making frozen bubbles and even frozen Top Ramen. I think as Montanans, we’re ‘Licensed to Chill’. I for one enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the world around me. Other activities we enjoy are exercise classes Tues & Fri; men’s open forum coffee hour on Thurs; and Bingo following lunch on Wed. The Billings Library bookmobile visits the 2nd & 4th Wed of each month. Don’t forget monthly birthday parties on the 4th Wednesday with cake donated by Morning Star. Pineview Quilters are always working on a project and would welcome more quilters. That said, we meet each Wednesday at the Shepherd Community Center for laughter, good food and camaraderie with our friends. We’d love to have you join us. RSVP for lunch with Dawn – 406-696-1343 by noon on Monday. For additional information about the Shepherd Seniors contact Maryann – (406)698-5811.

MEAL SITE UPDATES WORDEN

VFW Hall • Main Street • Reservations: 406-880-6061 • Fridays at 12:00 Happy spring from your friends at Worden! Isn’t it great to see the first spring flowers poke through the snow? Warm and sunny days are ahead! We at Worden are mourning the loss of one of our most faithful members, Debby Dvorak. She had been a member of the board for several years and had great ideas for activities. It was her idea to have a carnival, and she did it up big! Debby also had a passion for veterans, and always planned something special for Veterans Day. She shopped for our Bingo prizes, so we will remember her fondly whenever we get a Bingo and go to pick up a prize. Her absence will leave a big hole in our group. May we never forget to let those special friends around us know how much they mean to us. We never know when they will be taken from us. RiverStone Health Worden Clinic Lunch and Health will be presenting information on recommended screenings to prevent colorectal cancer during the noon hour on Friday, March 8, at the Worden Meal Site. On April 12, clinic staff will host Spring BINGO at the Worden Meal Site. This will be a fun time with games and prizes for winners. In addition, clinic staff will offer free blood pressure checks on the second Friday of every month during lunchtime.
