Perforated Core: Multi-Family Housing

The catalyst for a new, diverse living in downtown Birmingham, AL. Located on the corner of 20th Street and 2nd Avenue in the Birmingham Green, the structure utilizes ‘open concept’ units implemented in “L” and “I” shapes. These units are manipulated to create a variety of openings to maximize long sight lines.

A few additional connecting units provide more housing as well as unite the two single loaded cores. A restaraunt on the ground floor draws people in from the main 20th street with a semi-public courtyard.

Angulated Forest: Educational Auburn, Alabama

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Auburn University is a membership learning program for retired professors. The site is located on Sunny Slope, an antebellum Greek Revival style cottage built circa 1850. The cottage is currently used

by OLLI. As a result, the history is an important part of the context. When approaching my design on the site, I tried to take into consideration the significance of the land.To highlight the land I arranged my buildings to not only create spaces between the buildings, but to also direct views and movement throughout the site. In general, the buildings were designed to enhance the site rather than take away from it.

This urban infill project created a dance center that has rentable spaces for the public. This project made several initial few moves. Beginning with pushing the theater to the west for privacy, locating the studios on the second floor facing the street for visibility, curving the corner for accessibility, and screening the south facade for legibility. These major moves informed the rest of the project. Emphasis of the curves and extending the mass of the theater were other special moments that were considered. Playing with the transparency of materials such as the curved glass around the staircase as well as the thickness of the mezzanines wall, the viewer can feel curvilinear entrance space.

Gaps in the floor in roof surfaces along the wall wrapping the theater were designed to express the mass of the theater.
