BURI

2023 Winner of the award for multidisciplinary scenic creation for early childhood from Bogotá District Institute of Arts

Synopsis

Minutes after arriving in the world, Buri discovers that his voice, his hair, and his size are different from those of others. After a terrible catastrophe, Buri is expelled from his city by the white inhabitants and begins a mystical journey full of possibilities, crossing mountains, oceans and jungles until he finds his true home.

Using shadows, puppets, masks, video and black theater, Lúcida hecha a mano company composes the plastic universe that will take us into the Buri world. Buri presents diversity and difference as elements that enrich the living experience and shows how facing the unknown, even when it involves fear, is also a possibility of fulfillment, joy and happiness.

Buri was born in a long-term performance carried out in the city of Lopburi, Thailand in 2020 while the director of the collective was trapped during the pandemic. Unable to return to Colombia and feeling strange and different from everyone, she decided to make large-format borrowed body puppets, using the local basket weaving tradition and natural fibers to recreate these characters that embodied the strangeness she felt outside her homeland. Dressed as what she called a “Buri”, she gained the attention, laughter and sympathy of those who initially saw only a foreigner in her.
