THE INCUBATOR

The incubator is a plant library for the endemic species of Brisbane located near the Royal Botanical Garden in the CBD of Brisbane, Australia. This hypothetical project explored the relationship between architecture and its context by investigating beyond the usual readings of the site and looking at less tangible forces such as history, politics and culture as drivers for design.

The city of Brisbane emerged from a mangrove swamp, which provided sustenance to its unique wildlife species, whereas today these species rely on the backyards of its suburbs. These backyards contribute immensely to its urban forest that is threatened by the use of inappropriate pesticides and planting of invasive species. The architecture expands on the traditional understanding of the ‘library typology’. It posits itself as a publicly accessible repository of knowledge in endemic plant species. The incubator hosts and shares plant seeds to contribute to the preservation of the endemic wildlife ecosystem in Brisbane and create awareness about sustainable gardening practices through workshops and knowledge sharing. People can share, store seeds and grow native plants in the incubator while being distributed to the city helping Brisbane council achieve its goal of achieving 40% Green Urban Forest by 2031.

The backyards of Brisbane’s suburbs provide most of the green cover in the city and contributes to the urban forest.

Planting invasive species and using inappropriate pesticides are threatening this ecosystem.

The site, located on the fringes of Brisbane’s opposite the Brisbane city Botanic Garden.

These urban forests provide sustenance to Brisbane’s unique wildlife species.

The government is taking initiatives to increase Brisbane’s green by 40% by 2031.

Plant spaces located at the maximum sun-exposed parts.

ECOSYSTEM The endemic plants grown in the library can be distributed back to the parks, and also contribute to the urban forest. CITY Plants are distributed back to the city.

COMMUNITY People can donate seeds of endemic species, plants and knowledge on botany.

NATIVE PLANT SPECIES Brachyscome multifida, Crinum pedunculatum, Pandorea jasminoides, Banksia spinulosa, Syzgium sp.

TROLLEY WORKSHOP

The Trolley Workshop located on San Cristobal is part of a design intervention project aiming to reduce dependence on Ecuador for resources and waste management systems, to keep up with the rising tourism industry and population growth. The workshop made from local materials focuses on promoting trolleys made from recycled plastic as a means for carrying goods, encouraging people to walk more rather than relying on taxis or other vehicles. Thus, helping to reduce the carbon footprint in the Galapagos Islands.

TRANSITIONAL SHELTER

The Transitional Shelter is a design solution for a safe house for young homeless women between the age group of 18 - 24 suffering from domestic violence. The objective of the studio was to apply Systems Thinking as a design approach for making an informed decision for site selection and architectural design solution.

The shelter follows the concept of camouflage by adopting the characteristics of its surrounding context. The location is to be selected based on the parameters of safety, healthcare, accessibility, education, training, community amenities and employment opportunities. The shelter consists of 20 private and shared bedrooms, lounge, dining, study areas, library, art gallery, central courtyard and administration. This project aims to empower women by providing them with a safe space to recover and the resources required to get back up on their feet.
