Considerations were taken in the design to utilize the use of maximum daylight in the interior spaces, hence the use of a large atrium space and green terraces to make sure no corridor space were insufficient in lighting. The structural system, which is the spine of the entire architecture, was all concrete columns and concrete based flat slabs. The screen that wraps the architecture like an envelope was also part of the structural system. The layout for the entire complex was designed to ensure efficient system and planning in order to handle the complex functions of the Commercial Hotel.

URBAN CORRIDOR PROJECT: Urban Corridor LOCATION: SAARC Cirlce YEAR: 2010 STUDIO INSTRUCTORS: Assitant Professor Iftekhar Ahmed Assistant Professor Sheik Rubaiya Sultana

PHASE O1: STUDY

PHASE O2: GROUP PROPOSAL

PHASE O3: SOLITARY PROPOSAL

The purpose of this project was to investigate one of the busiest nodes of Dhaka city, which is the SAARC Circle, situated in the Karwan Bazaar Area. It was half a semester long group project. My group mates and I began our investigation by analyzing the site from its origins to the heavy traffic flow, dead zones, pedestrian accessibility, important architectures, near by lakes and parks and other details which needed to be addressed.

After analyzing our data’s and resources we provided a proposal, which we believed to be the ideal solution to the problems identified during our investigation. We suggested an elevated green plateau for pedestrians to use, which would also function as a park space. Allowing the pedestrians to cross the streets without getting killed in the process. In order to connect the existing park space and lake a bridge was suggested in the master plan. To solve the heavy traffic flow we suggested an underpass breaking the 7 street junctions to just 2 and 3 towers were suggested for compensation to the landowners.

After the group proposal the group had to split up and carry on with the detail design individually. I received a portion of the master plan consisting of the 2 towers and part of the green plateau. The basic idea was to design a modern high-rise building, which would connect with the green plateau from the plaza level. Making it more open towards urban activities to be generated.

The idea was to combine everything together in order to establish one entity, which we called The Green Plateau. PRO CESS

01 The images on the left illustrate the sculpture, which I generated out of acrylic. I tried to capture the essence of the transition in the sculpture. By bending the plates in an angle a motion graphics was generated which was my attempt to capture the essence of the youth. The red plates highlight the vibrancy of youth. The interplay of the plates in a dynamic arrangement portrays the significance of youth in all its glory.

02 The model image demonstrates the architectural form, which was generated from the sculpture in phase 01. Programs or functions such as a swimming pool, health and fitness center, games room, restaurant etc were added to the design of the structure. Steel Trusses were introduced as a structural system for the architecture leaving wide and open column free spaces in the interior spaces. Increasing the overhangs and generating louvered systems on the glass facades catered for climate considerations.

03 The final product achieved is shown in the rendered image. Finalizing the programs and adjusting the form was a challenge, but the end result led to free open spaces in the interior and a dynamic form, structurally sound, visually appealing and climatically addressed in every order.

SIT E The café began in an old 2-storied residential building with a front lawn and backyard space, within the upscale Gulshan neighborhood in Dhaka, also close to the commercial Gulshan Avenue. The front lawn provided an opportunity to create a welcoming space as one entered the premises, where this space also became filled with an enthusiastic crowd during world cup events. The trees within this lawn provided shade and comfortable spaces to sit under during regular days, strewn with customers out BANGLADESH, DHAKA

for a dine with sports experience. The existing plan was orientated north and south, thus allowing the interiors to be naturally ventilated. The high ceilings of the built structure were an added advantage allowing the interior to be designed with curvature ceilings that dropped across the rooms. Some rooms had large windows that allowed in plentiful daylight, while some other rooms had little exposure to daylight and needed artificial lighting treatments. Built as a load bearing structure, the resulting beam depths were a challenge to work with while designing the spaces to flow from one to another without seeming too separate.

LAND USE

GREEN

ROAD NETWORK The plan made use of the residential layout to create three zones of differing characteristics, while all came together as one space through the central dining hall and landscape. The use of a white and red scheme was used to complement the logo of the establishment, while implying a ‘Team Bench’ identity.

The design proposed distinct zones that provided customers with a choice of experience. While the landscape had the outdoors appeal, it was also the designed for hosting concerts and other events. The dining hall was the central space that connected all the zones through a linear space under an installation that implied flow or movement. Groups of friends could choose the private lounge or sit in the main lounge for gaming experiences with friends or foe! Exterior View of the Outdoor Space
