immersion heaters in the hot water section. In our

system we have both. The heat pump smartly controls this to boost power if the outdoor

temperature is very cold and the heat pump thinks

it is more efficient to heat through a boost.

v More Efficient - Straight to Emiiters In conventional systems a low-loss-header is used. You can see in the diagram how the flow and return water goes through this low-loss header. This is fine when you have a boiler and your water temperature is 80 degrees but because heat pumps work at lower temperatures, the heat loss in the low-loss-header makes a big difference to your felt comfort at your radiators or underfloor heating.

In Adlår’s system we arrange the heatpump in what is called an “inline” setup. This means the water goes straight from the heat pump into your emitters without high heat loss.

v More Efficient - No losses in your piping network In conventional systems a 3-port valve directs the water between your hot water and your heating. This is usually situated where the low loss header is, which could be multiple meters away from your heat pump, for example in a loft.

Heat pumps work best by adjusting your heating water temperature smartly to save you more on your heating bills. To maximise the savings the water in your heating system doesn’t want to always be +50 degrees.

It should instead change temperatures, and be as cool as you need to get the right comfort in your home. In contrast, your hot water does want to be at a consistent temperature, usually around 50-55 degrees.

Having multiple meters of pipework between your heat pump and the 3-port valve means anytime a hot water demand happens there will be significant losses. As an example, your heating is running at 30 degrees (a medium temperature for underfloor heating systems, equivalent to 45 degrees for a medium radiator temperature), and a hot water demand comes on. The heat pump will then start heating the water to 50 degrees.

Before it gets up to temperature however, the 3-port valve will open and the 30 degree water will start entering your hot water tank.

It will take several minutes, if not longer, to get the water temperature up from 30 degrees to 50 degrees if the heat pump is running in an efficient mode. During that time the hot water tank will be filling with this colder water. The heat pump will then have to continue to work much longer and harder in order to refill your hot water tank with 50 degree water, first displacing the cold water that entered it, and then heating the whole water tank up to 50 degrees. This is a massively inefficient process.

v More Efficient - 1.3kW Heating of Hot Water Your heat pump is specified based on the heat loss of your home. In other words, it is specified based on your heating demand, not your hot water demand. Hot water demand requires a lot less energy capacity than your heating does.

It therefore doesn’t make sense to use a 6, 10 or 14kW heat pump when a 1.3kW heat pump is more than sufficient. By being able to use a 1.3kW cylinder heat pump for your hot water, the running cost savings are significant compared to if you did it with a large unit. This is especially prevelant in the summer months when you won’t need your heating on.

With our split system you can have your outdoor unit off during warm weather and have your small indoor unit keeping your hot water warm.

v Priority Hot Water AND Heating In a conventional system you can either heat your hot water OR your heating, the 3-port valve switching the water between the two. In the Adlår system, these are separate and therefore you can have both at the same time.

As an example, you can imagine a cold day where having your heating on and constant is desired in order to have maximum comfort, however if you also decided to have a bath or run your hot water, it is likely the hot water demand would be triggered. As these system work in priority hot water it means.

v Backup Heating - 2x Immersion Heaters In most low loss headers there is only an immersion heater in the hot water section, and not in the heating buffer vessel. This can be okay, but it is better to design the system for the worst case scenario, and not just the design temperature.

To understand this better, using the government MCS protocol for heat pump design, the heat pump is designed to match a design temperature. In Surrey for example, this design temperature is -2.2 degrees. The recent lowest recorded temperature in 2010 in Surrey was -10 degrees.

By designing in backup heaters which the heat pump controls using smart sensors to monitor the outside temperature and the heat pump workload, not only can the heat pump work more efficiently, but you also ensure under the worst possible weather you aren’t running cold.

v Better Looking - Smaller Footprint On a design front, we’ll let you be the judge of whether you think our outdoor unit looks better than others. The other big advantage however is that our indoor space requirements are much less using our design. As a general rule, a buffer tank with 25 litres of water per kW output are required. In a typical 3-bed home with a heat pump of 10kW, you would require a buffer tank of ~150 litres. This takes up a lot of space. It is also inefficient to boost heat when the weather is very cold, with most low-loss heater units not even having immersion heaters connected. This means on the coldest days you could struggle to get the heat you want.

Due to our system setup, which includes the smart backup heater and a state-of-art Grundfos pump we turn your home into a buffer tank and thermal store, meaning we only need a very small buffer tank (35 litres) in most circumstances. Heating this small buffer tank is more efficient.

3 Understanding Heat Pump Warmth - the heating equivelent of the tortoise and hare v Tortoise (Heat Pump) and the Hare (Boiler) Changing from a boiler to a heat pump requires a rethink in the way you heat your home. As one of our customers recently said “somehow the heat is much nicer than gas”.

A boiler burns fossil fuels to super-heat cold water to ~80°C rapidly, to do this a boiler burns at roughly 1,200°C. This isn’t an exact process, and not a very efficient process either, and results in a yo-yo effect between the boiler and your thermostat turning ON/OFF the boiler to try to maintain the temperature you desire.

A heat pump, in contrast, maintains a constant flow and changes the water temperature in a much more controlled way, one degree at a time. This maintains a constant temperature in your home resulting in a much more comfortable heat.

As with the traditional tortoise and hare race, we also like to claim the heat pump wins the race when the race is comfort and the prize is lower energy bills.

v Smart Heat Curves Smart heating curves lie at the heart of your home’s resting temperature.

As our heat pump sits outside it is easy to measure the outside ambient temperature and adjust your heating temperature without you needing to worry about it. As it gets colder the heat pump increases the water temperature accordingly based on your personal preferences and your learnt heating patterns.

We have 16 different heating curves for you to choose from, allowing you to find the most efficient and comfortable mode to suit you, or to adjust the modes when you feel cold.

v Radiators and Emitters A key component of heat pumps working optimally is to conduct a detailed heat loss survey of your property, measuring each room in your home’s heat loss and checking the BTU (output) of your radiators is sufficient to cover the heat loss of that room.

During our site survey we will do these detailed measurements and after the results are processed and finalised we will communicate with you which ones might need upgrading in order to get the optimum results from your heat pump.

5 ASHP Cylinder - Split system, the future of hot water now! v The Future of Hot Water Heating As detailed in the technical section our ASHP Cylinders are a core component in our split system design. They are really the future of hot water heating and will become a standarad feature in future homes. Adlår has worked hard to develop our own cylinder with core advantages above the rest. See above for the cost saving and system advantages.

v R290 Refriderant R290 has a zero ODP value, which means that it has no negative impact on the ozone layer. In addition, the GWP value is close to 0, which means there is a minimal impact on the global-warming. What’s more? R290 is not only an environmentally friendly refrigerant, but also achieves a higher COP and higher water temperature.

v Micro-Channel Heat Coil High-density micro-channel heat coils with multi-flow allow the refrigerant and the surface of the stainless steel water tank to have a larger heat exchange area, which highly improves the heat transfer efficiency.

v Stainless Steel Our ASHP Cylinder is made with stainless steel providing higher water quality over a longer time than other materials.

v Filters - Magnesium or Titanium Electrical You can choose between a magnesium or a titanium electrical anode filter. These filters balance the mineral content of your water by filtering out calcium, extraneous particles, chlorine and heavy metals. This results in an almost neutral pH. The titanium electrical anode has the advantage that it doesn’t need to be replaced, and will extend the life of your cylinder dramatically.

Magnesium anodes in contrast are sacrificial meaning you need to stay on top of them to replace them when they are ~70% dissolved.

Filters are very important for long-term water quality, with recent studies showing not only the critical importance of filtered drinking water, but also bath and shower water, and the impacts of heavy metals absorbed through the sink during bathing.

You must provide us with all relevant information regarding your property to properly check your eligibility.

Adlår will apply for your grant >10 days in advance of your install to confirm eligibility from the government. On receipt of the confirmation email from Ofgem you must confirm your details.

If your application isn’t successful due to your EPC or other circumstances we must pre-pay the grant amount and have it retrospectively applied once the grant goes through. Usually this is due to your EPC requiring material upgrades.

Fuse Board / Power to Heat Pump

System Flush

In most cases a new fuse board shouldn’t be required. If your fuse board does not have capacity or needs upgrading to the BS 7671 + P standard we will need to upgrade your electrics.

It is not neccissary to flush your system, but it can improve the performance of your heat pump and improve its longevity.

It can often be more cost effective to get this done by a local contractor.

If you are able to provide and run a 3-core cable to the heat pump location from your fuse cupboard to your heat pump you will save a further £250.
