esm cvut ,khve This is the 25th journal message I have written at Ohab Zedek. What they all share in common is some kind of seasonal or Torah portion connection to the shul, followed by accolades of the worthy honorees. This year, Alisa and I are among those honorees, so I won’t be writing about all of them. The only true praise a person deserves is the one that is given when the object of the praise is in no position to respond. Our sages bid us otherwise to only render partial praise to any individual.

The fear is that if full praise would be given, the recipient’s head may be lifted up in arrogance over the acclaim with which he or she has received.

When Yosef was in jail he met four men; a baker, a butler, the chief baker and the chief butler. A fly was found in Paroah’s cup and a pebble in his bread. Who is guilty? The chief butler accepted responsibility as he should have tested the cup before placing it in Paroah’s hand. The chief baker blamed one of the many kitchen workers and refused to take responsibility. Yosef noticed this and told both.

In three days, Paroah will lift up your head.

Indeed both heads were lifted. The one who took responsibility was lifted to his previous glory and acclaim in Paroah’s court. The one who shirked responsibility literally had his head lifted on a tree.

This week’s Torah portion was Naso, which lifts the heads of the twelve leaders of the tribes of Israel. They reached that office for the same reason we are honoring such special people at this historic 140th anniversary of Ohab Zedek. They have all stepped up over a long time to take responsibility for their community and it is our privilege to recognize them for it.

Jenny Michael and her family have been connected to OZ for close to a century.

Throughout that time she has stepped up with an open home and the open arms of chesed and hospitality. She proudly bears the heritage of our shul in all her activities and our community is far richer because of her presence. Alison and Michael Novich are awarded with the accolade of community service, and proudly bear in their award the name of Nathan K. Gross, a former president of Ohab Zedek and a great community servant in his own right. Alison and Michael are always there to step into a leadership or communal role and their service is being recognized at our dinner. Our 140 years of glorious history are being bridged to the future as we honor a selfless and devoted member of our young professional community. It is hard to find an element of communal action that Evan is not involved in. He leads the Young Professional Minyan and takes an active part in that community’s activities. He can usually be seen running to a Hatzolah call, and always lends a helping hand and sympathetic ear for anyone’s needs. He embodies the future of our shul and we are most pleased to add him to the prestigious list of honorees in this historic year. chcj iurjt iurjt I have always refrained from citing an oft-quoted phrase, said first by Rabbi Akiva regarding his wife and reportedly repeated by Abraham Lincoln regarding his mother.

The quote is: “What’s mine and yours is hers.” I would never be so arrogant as to decide what is yours or anybody’s, but I am quite sure that all of what is mine is hers. The 25 years at OZ, the 30 years of marriage and the 6 children we’ve raised in this community have all thrived because of her humble, cheerful and dignified persona. For this and much more, OZ is honoring her for twenty five years of service and I humbly tag along.

Since it wouldn’t make sense to say, “until 120”, I’ll say “until 240.”

esm cvut ,khve Dear Members of the Ohab Zedek Community, Friends and Guests: Welcome to a very special OZ Annual Dinner! OZ is 140 years strong, a breathtaking milestone.

It is a time to reflect back on our long and proud history as a shul, to look forward to the opportunities and challenges of the future; and to embrace the blessings and responsibilities of our special community in the present.

This past week we celebrated the holiday of Shavuot, marking the Jewish people’s receiving the Torah at Sinai from G-d. While our Torah is our inheritance from our forebears all the way back to Sinai, each of us, in a real sense, “receives” it anew each day – by studying it, by living it, by teaching it to the next generation, by making it relevant in our time and our lives, and by making G-d’s presence felt through adherence to Torah values and principles. This is an apt metaphor for our shul as well. As stewards of our illustrious institution, we stand on the shoulders of our visionary predecessors and we are entrusted with keeping it vibrant and healthy for the next generation.

For this, our 140th anniversary year, we have selected honorees with deep historical roots in our community and those who are carrying our banner into a new generation.

RABBI ALLEN & ALISA SCHWARTZ are honored for 25 years of service. It is no exaggeration to say that the modern rebirth of our shul and our community dates from their arrival. Their commitment to chesed is renowned, whether organizing a response to large-scale needs such as Hurricane Sandy, or the quiet and sensitive way in which Rabbi Schwartz helps needy individuals and families via his administration of our shul’s chesed fund. And, indeed, they have done all of this while simultaneously raising a large family, holding down significant additional teaching posts, and serving in leadership positions in numerous community and national Jewish organizations. Rabbi and Mrs. Schwartz are our spiritual leaders, teachers, counselors, friends, and – most of all – a continuing source of powerful inspiration. It is fitting that we honor them through our support of the institution to which they have devoted themselves. We look forward to many more years of their leadership and friendship.

JENNY MICHAEL is the recipient of the Ohab Zedek Heritage Award. In celebration of our 140th anniversary year, we created an award to honor an individual whose family association with OZ has particularly deep and long-standing roots. Jenny’s own experience with OZ dates from 1940, when she and her family arrived from Germany and attended High Holiday services at the shul. After she and her husband Kenneth z”l, married, they remained on the West Side and became active members of OZ as they raised their four children. Jenny is a unique source of generosity, institutional memory and insight into our community.

ALISON & MICHAEL NOVICH are this year’s recipients of the Nathan K. Gross Community Service Award. Alison and Michael have been OZ members since 2000. They are a quiet anchor of our community, attending services every Shabbat and chag. In addition to their involvement in a wide range of activities – Alison in Sisterhood and Young Couples; Michael attending services daily and leading davening, giving the occasional Daf Yomi and serving as a Trustee – they are also friends with a smile and a cheerful word at Kiddush. We are proud to recognize them for this deserved honor.

EVAN SILVER is the recipient of the Young Leadership Award. Evan has emerged over the last several years as one of the principal leaders of our young professionals’ community.

Although busy with work and finishing an MBA, he has made time to be Gabbai of the Young Professionals Minyan, to lead membership and programming initiatives, and to serve as a Trustee. Evan is also continuously on call as an EMT for Hatzalah of the West Side. Evan embodies the truism that if you want something done, give it to the busiest person. And he does it all with a quiet charisma that has made him both beloved and indispensable.

We are pleased to pay tribute to our honorees tonight.

May we draw strength from our shul’s glorious history, and may we move forward as a community for many more years to come. Enjoy the dinner!

esm cvut ,khve The upcoming Parsha of Behaaloscha opens with the commandment to Aharon Hakohen to kindle the Menorah daily in the Mikdash. However, what is striking is that the Torah then continues by informing us that in fact, Aharon did as he was instructed. Surely he followed the orders he received from God. Why would he possibly do otherwise? Rashi quotes from the Midrash that this phrase is added to praise Aharon for not changing the service. This just begs the question: why would Aharon fathom deviating from the divine instructions? Would one think that he would?

The Sfas Emes explains that Aharon is praiseworthy for the fact that he did not change his attitude, or his approach in performing this mitzvah.

Every morning he lit the Menorah with the same energy and fervor as he had done that very first day. His vigor was undiminished even after so many weeks, months, and years. That is the reason why the Torah says that Aharon did as he was told.

Torah study and Tefilla are examples of mitzvos that we perform every day, multiple times, for 365 days a year. Do we still wake up and jump out of bed with the same excitement as we did on the first day of school or the first day that we put on tefillin? The Gemara (Brachos 32b) teaches that these mitzvos of Torah study and Tefilla specifically are in need of constant reinforcement. Because we do them day in and day out, over and over again, it is so easy for them to become ‘stale’ and performed by rote, without much attention. We are therefore challenged to try to constantly inject a measure of enthusiasm to ensure that we fulfill these mitzvos with energy and zeal.

A Shul is our home for both Torah and Tefilla, a place where we come together as a community to kindle the lights of spirituality in our lives.

We can look toward Aharon Hakohen as our role model as to how to approach these essential parts of our lives with excitement and enthusiasm.

Tonight we come together to honor Rabbi Allen and Alisa Schwartz, Jenny Michael, Alison and Michael Novich and Evan Silver, individuals who serve the community in a variety of ways. They all generously devote themselves to the community in their own capacity. Although their years of service to the shul differ, they each nonetheless follow the lead of Aharon Hakohen and approach each day with energy and excitement that is an inspiration to us all.

ALISA & RABBI ALLEN SCHWARTZ

On this special celebration of Ohab Zedek’s 140th year, we are honored to pay tribute to our very own Alisa and Rabbi Allen Schwartz for their 25 years of leadership. Their devotion to each other, to our shul and the Jewish community serves as an inspiration for us all.

As our shul grew, so did their family. They are now proud parents of Shonnie (and Yoni), Chani (and Joel), Moshe (and Renee), Ellie, Esti, and Mindy, and adoring grandparents of Michal, Aryeh, Tamar, Yael, Shira, Rivka, Meira, and Huvi.

Rabbi Schwartz holds the Raymond J. Greenwald Chair of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University. He has a large following of people across the globe listening to his shiurim on YUtorah.org. The Rabbi has also taught in elementary school and high school, and has given workshops to teachers on how to teach Tanach. He is a member of the Board of Education of Manhattan Day School, and serves on the boards of Yeshivat Sha’lvim and North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry and is now stepping down from the presidency of West Side COJO after 10 years. Last summer, Rabbi Schwartz finished writing a Sefer on the Rokeach’s interpretation to Mishlei, that is presently being published in Israel.

When Alisa looks back over the past 25 years, she says that she loves living in the City. It is a place that has a constant energy and a unique openness. She loves the fact that it is a community where no two people are quite the same. She says, “It has been a great place to raise a family.” Alisa is a talented and enthusiastic teacher, giving kallah classes, both in a group setting and on an individual basis. She enjoys maintaining connections with her students long after classes are over. Alisa is active in the OZ Sisterhood and helps run the Women’s Amen Group. During the summer, she and the Rabbi serve on the educational staff of Camp Mesorah. Alisa has been active in Emunah Women of America, Manhattan Day School PTA and Bikur Cholim of the West Side.

Alisa and the Rabbi’s breadth of generosity, chesed, spirituality and friendship know no bounds. They have endeared themselves to so many in our community through their attention to young and old, through life cycle events and in times of happiness and sadness.

Alisa and Rabbi Schwartz want to express their gratitude to all the amazing and talented people who make OZ feel more like a family than a shul. As we go forward together, we believe that the best years are yet to come.

max rosenbaum k"z Max Rosenbaum k"z was a man whose life was dedicated to his family, shul and community. In 1923, he married his childhood sweetheart, Ilse Rau. He learned the importance of Torah, Avodah and Gemilus Chasodim from his parents, Heinrich and Blanka Rosenbaum, in the Bavarian town of Fuerth.

Before the terror of Kristallnacht, Max was active in many organizations including the school, orphanage, and gemilus chesed charities.

After several months in Dachau, Max fortunately, was able to flee, first to London and then to the United States where his family started life anew in July of 1940 and joined Congregation Ohab Zedek. After establishing a business, he became an active member of OZ, serving as First Vice President during the fifties and later as Honorary Vice President. He dedicated himself with full strength to developing the congregation into a true Kehillah. On Acharon Shel Pesach, 1955, he delivered a message to the entire congregation, which resulted in the establishment of the Gemilus Chesed Fund. On this occasion, when he asked all those who agreed with this idea and wanted to share this noble responsibility to rise, the entire assemblage stood up as one.

Over the years, this noble fund has helped countless individuals and families through very difficult periods in their lives and continues to do so to this very day. It is with profound gratitude that we continue to remember and pay tribute to Max Rosenbaum, k�z.

maurice schauer k"z In the 1950’s Ohab Zedek was in its prime. The West Side of New York was a growing and flourishing Jewish Community. Post World War II America was realizing tremendous financial growth and prosperity. It was then that Maurice Schauer, a newlywed, young father and hard working businessman realized that although prosperity was widespread in the country, there were still people who were not blessed; those who were having a hard time adjusting to a new homeland, a new language, and a new freedom. Those were proud people, they were not about to beg or lose their pride by publicly asking their friends and neighbors for financial help. Maurice Schauer, together with Max Rosenbaum, founded the Gemilus Chesed Fund at Ohab Zedek.

This act of Tzedaka was the product of love and understanding; it was a dream that brought hope to many people. But it required a lot of work and devotion.

A special man, Maurice opened his house Sunday mornings to parlor meetings to raise money for the cause. He enlisted the help of his wife and family to bake old world specialties to serve at these meetings. He recognized that the real Tzedaka that the Gemilus Chesed Fund performed would not perpetuate itself, if it was not continuously funded by those whom Hashem had blessed. He could not simply go to a fund raiser and expect that next year someone in the community would do the same.

Maurice Schauer was a true example of “Maaseh Avos Siman L’Banim”. His father, Henry Schauer, was the head of the Gemilus Chesed Fund in Pforzheim, Germany from where his family came. Abraham Gottleib, his father-in-law was very active in Ohab Zedek, from being a regular Baal Tefillah on the High Holy Days to lending the synagogue a Sefer Torah (which the family still keeps on permanent loan to the synagogue) he was very involved in the religious life of our congregation. Regina Gottleib, his mother-in-law, was an officer in our sisterhood for many years. Maurice Schauer was an active member of the congregation, a member of the Board of Trustees, an officer, and eventually Chairman of the Board of the Ohab Zedek Men’s Club.

It is only befitting that tonight we take the time to recognize in perpetuity a man who was very much a part of our past and whose ideas and concepts are in our present and our future, Maurice Schauer k”z.

Jenny Michael, our Heritage Award honoree, was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1931.

Her father, Dr. Ernst Freeman, served as a medic in World War I and received the Iron Cross. In November 1938, her father was arrested and sent to Buchenwald where he was kept for six weeks until her mother went to the police when she was nine months pregnant and demanded his release as a World War I hero. As part of a plan to leave Germany, in January 1939, Jenny and her three younger siblings were sent ahead on a kinder transport to Switzerland and were dispersed to different homes. Before the end of the year her parents arrived in London. The children arrived in Cambridge, England in February, 1940. Her father was immediately interned as an enemy alien. After his release in September, 1940 they all sailed from Glasgow to the United States on the S/S Cameronia in a convoy of three passenger liners. During that s/s cameronia voyage, German U-boats sank the ships in front of and behind the Cameronia.

The family arrived in New York, shortly before Rosh Hashana, and bought tickets for the overflow minyan at Ohab Zedek in what is now the social hall. They eventually moved to West 87th Street.

Jenny’s mother lived in that same apartment until she died at 102 in 2003.

Jenny attended P.S. 166 on West 89th Street, Joan of Arc Middle School on West 93rd Street, Julia Richman High School and received an associate degree from Fashion Institute of Technology. She later returned to FIT for a BA and earned an MA from Parsons in museum curatorship. She worked as a designer of children’s clothing and is presently a docent at the Jewish Museum, where she volunteers most Sundays.

She met Kenneth Michael when she was 14 (he was 18) at Hashomer Hadati. This Zionist youth movement of Mizrachi, which was later named Bnei Akiva, encouraged people to move to kibbutzim. Kenneth went to Israel and volunteered on a farm and then returned to marry Jenny. They were married in 1952 at Rabbi Stamm’s shul on West 85th Street. Following the Frankfurt tradition, the dinner was held that evening at the Brewster Hotel on West 86th Street and was catered by Mrs. Papilsky.

Their four children are: Naomi who with her husband Aaron Mandelbaum have 3 children and 9 grandchildren; Jacob who with his wife Rochel Leah have 9 children and 14 grandchildren; Danny who with his wife Miriam have 3 children; and Sheera who with her husband Michael Moffson have 3 children.

Kenneth and Jenny remained active members of Ohab Zedek even though many people left the shul and the West Side during the 1950’s and 60’s. Their children grew up in the shul and their sons and grandsons have been baalai kriya. Kenneth died in 1998. He is fondly remembered and missed by all who knew him.

Their exceptional hospitality, particularly toward young people and new members of OZ, has led to many long-standing friendships.

Jenny said the interior of Ohab Zedek reminds her of the Boerneplatz Shul in Frankfurt that was led by Rabbi Dr. Jacob Hoffman, who, after he was expelled from Germany in 1937, became the rabbi of Ohab Zedek.

Jenny was active as PTA president at Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim (the predecessor of Yeshiva Ketana) and vice-president of the nowdefunct Women’s Branch of the Orthodox Union, where she organized two national conferences.

We are honored to present the Heritage Award to Jenny Michael whose personal history has been so intimately connected to the shul for so many years.

Jenny’s motto is: “If you find out what people enjoy doing, you can get them involved.”

nathan k. gross k"z Nathan K. Gross k"z was an active member of Ohab Zedek. He served as President of the synagogue from 1953-1961. He was selected as Ohab Zedek’s Man of the Year in 1960.

He was known for his great reverence for community service and held in high esteem by those who dedicated their time to improving the lives of those around them. He believed that everyone has an obligation to serve his or her community and he felt strongly that putting something back into a community that gives so much is not only a responsibility, but a privilege.

The institution of the Nathan K. Gross Community Service Award has been a great source of gratification to his family and friends.

We salute Alison & Michael Novich by bestowing this award upon them tonight for they truly exemplify the communal ideal.

ALISON & MICHAEL NOVICH

Alison Novich, daughter of Tina and Sam Glassberg, sister of Bruce and Steven, grew up in Hillcrest, NY. A graduate of Yeshiva of Central Queens (YCQ), Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR), Michlelet Mevaseret Yerushalayim (MMY) and Barnard College of Columbia University, she currently works in Continuity of Business for Citigroup.

Michael Novich, third son of Ira and Penny Novich, brother of Jon, David and Jeremy, grew up in Scarsdale, NY. A graduate of Westchester Day School(WDS), Ramaz, Yeshivat Hakotel/Netiv Aryeh, Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and NYU’s Stern School of Business, he currently works as a Director of Project Management in Equities Product Management at NASDAQ OMX. Alison and Michael met during their senior year in high school and immediately became close friends. They stayed close during the year spent in Israel and in a case of perception is reality, began dating at the end of their first semester in college, though many thought they were a couple long before they actually started dating.

With plans to graduate Columbia a semester early, Alison and Michael got married December 24th, 2000, the third day/fourth night of Chanukah. To this day, Michael is conflicted over the choice of December 24th – petitioning to permanently celebrate their anniversary on a day with more options for celebrating, not just kosher Chinese food and a movie.

Alison and Michael moved to the Upper West Side from the Columbia environs right after getting married and felt right at home at OZ. Having been invited out for many of their first Shabbat meals on the West Side, they have made it a tradition to try to ensure that friends from OZ getting married don’t have to cook their first Shabbat meals after Sheva Brachot.

Even when they moved to Zurich, Switzerland for Michael’s job, they chose the shul most like OZ and upon returning to the U.S., rather than moving to the suburbs as most would have expected, they came right back to OZ. Alison and Michael are at OZ nearly every Shabbat and most Chagim.

Alison has participated in many sisterhood events. Michael davens for the Amud, teaches an occasional Daf Yomi class, and serves on the Board of Trustees. Whenever OZ has made a push to have couples events, Alison and Michael have been among the organizers, with much success. They both firmly believe that their involvement with OZ is as enriching to them as it is to those who attend the event. They are humbled to accept the Nathan K. Gross Community Service Award this evening, not only as a recognition of what they have done for the community, but even more so, what the community has done for them.

EVAN SILVER

Evan Silver was born in New York and was raised in Huntington Beach and Los Angeles, California. After a year in Israel at Reishit, he went to Yeshiva University, Sy Syms School of Business, where he majored in finance. Upon graduation he decided to stay in New York (to the disappointment of his parents), and took a job in real estate at Besen and Associates. He started off as an analyst and later worked as a retail leasing specialist. After three years there he decided to return to school. He received a Masters in Real Estate Development at Columbia University in May 2012. Since graduating he has been pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors.

In Evan’s few years on the West Side he has been very involved in the community, following in the footsteps of his family who have always been very active in their community. He took over the responsibility as Gabbai of the Young Leadership minyan, was elected as a trustee at OZ and helped with several membership drives. He is credited with getting many young professionals to join the shul. He continues to help the young professional community by running several events at OZ, including Oneg Shabbatot and Purim Seudot.

In addition to his volunteer work at OZ he serves as an EMT for West Side Hatzalah, of which he has been a member for three years. He spends most of his spare time at the West Side Kollel or at the gym. Since moving to New York he has given up his native sport of surfing and switched back to hockey and snowboarding. His apartment has become a hangout for his friends for impromptu kiddushim and learning sessions. His parents, Morris and Sharon and his sister, Alison and her husband Eli, all live in LA, which Evan visits often. Because his family is originally from New York, he has many relatives living in or around NY. Since moving back to his home state he has taken the opportunity to spend time with this part of his family.

Evan is honored to be recognized with OZ’s Young Leadership Award this evening. Since he regards OZ as his “home away from home,” this award is particularly meaningful. We salute you Evan!
