WESTCHESTER HEBREW HIGH SCHOOL Annual Dinner and Celebration Honoring MJ & Dr. Barry Kanner Laura & Dr. Merrill Rotter Shira & Mitchell Zucker Parents of the Year and

The Graduating Class of 2013

Thursday, March 14, 2013 7:00pm Temple Israel of New Rochelle New Rochelle, NY

Message from the Dinner Chairperson Dear Friends and Families, Welcome to Westchester Hebrew High School’s Annual Scholarship Dinner and Celebration. Your presence and support is why we are able to continue to provide an outstanding high school experience to all who seek a day school education for their children, regardless of need. Thanks to you, we continue to enhance our already rigorous academic programming. This year, we introduced a Hebrew language program for our freshmen, with realtime instruction by an Israeli teacher, communicating as a class with iPad technology. We have increased the number of on-line elective courses offered through schools such as Brown University Pre-College on-line and Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, including AP Physics and Mandarin. We have hired coaches to better our athletic teams, provided service to Hurricane Sandy victims, and of course, sponsored Gilad Shalit’s visit to our school, an experience our students will never forget. Tonight, we honor, MJ and Dr. Barry Kanner, Laura and Dr. Merrill Rotter, and Shira and Mitchell Zucker, stellar representatives of their respective communities. They have given of themselves in countless ways, whether serving on the Board, chairing a Committee, or simply spreading the word about the wonders of Westchester to help with recruitment. We appreciate their service and extend a Mazal Tov on their well-deserved honors. We also salute the Class of 2013, knowing that all of you have helped to provide them with a rich secular and religious high school experience. They are well prepared to take their place at colleges and universities both here and in Israel. I would also like to thank our administration and staff, all of whom work tirelessly to ensure that each and every student reaches his or her potential. And finally, my personal thanks to the members of our Dinner Committee, for helping to make tonight such a success. Thank you all for your support and generosity, Bruce Povman Dinner Chair

Greeting from the Head of School Dear Friends, This past week in anticipation of Rosh Chodesh Nisan we read Parshat Hacohdesh, which speaks primarily about the obligation to bring the Pesach offering. While the Torah tells us that the sacrificial obligation is literally incumbent upon every home, the commentaries translate it to mean every family. This familial obligation at the center of one of the highlights of our history as a people, reminds us of the essential role that the family plays in Jewish life. It is the sanctity of the family and the home that keeps us vibrant as a nation and as a people. I’m fond of saying that our school is like a family. We support, encourage and care for each other like any other family. This approach is modeled by our administration, teachers, and staff and finds its way into our classrooms, hallways and co-curricular activities. It would only be logical then, that a school that feels like a family, is a place where great families would find a home. Tonight we pay tribute to MJ & Dr. Barry Kanner, Laura & Dr. Merrill Rotter and Shira & Mitchell Zucker, as Parents of the Year. Families that have worked hard for our school and helped make it a vibrant and successful home. I want to personally extend a Mazal Tov to them and wish them continued health and strength as they serve our school and the greater community for years to come. Mazal Tov to the Class of 2013 on your upcoming graduation. You will continue to be important members of the WHHS family as you branch out to Israel, college and beyond. Thanks also to our family of supporters who have made this annual dinner a great success. I wish them continued strength and encourage them to be part of our bright future. Sincerely,

Rabbi Jeffrey Beer Head of School

Greetings from the President Dear Friends, On behalf of the Westchester Hebrew High School Board of Trustees I welcome everyone to the Annual Scholarship Dinner and Celebration and express my sincere gratitude to those who have so generously supported the school throughout the years and tonight. Here at Westchester Hebrew High School we are proud to give our students the edge, in the classroom and beyond; in high school and in life. We wish a special Mazal Tov to our honorees, who contribute so much towards the betterment of our school. Our parents of the year, MJ & Dr. Barry Kanner, L:aura & Dr. Merrill Rotter and Shira & Mitchell Zucker, support the school with all their heart and soul. Each honoree is a shining example of commitment to Jewish education and our school and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. Mazal Tov to the Class of 2013 as you prepare to continue on your journey. We are thrilled to be able to add you to our growing roster of beloved and successful alumni. We take great pride in the growth that you have shown while at WHHS and hope that you continue to develop as active members of the Jewish community on your college campuses and beyond. Please be sure to keep in touch and to share your accomplishments with your WHHS family.

Fondly, Stu Berger President

The Officers and Board of Trustees of Westchester Hebrew High School are proud and privileged to honor tonight’s Honorees: MJ & Dr. Barry Kanner Laura & Dr. Merrill Rotter Shira & Mitchell Zucker Parents of the Year and The Graduating Class of 2013

We are proud of all of their accomplishments

Mazal Tov! Stuart Berger, Martin Blum, Carole Daman, Corrin Daman, Robert Feig, Saundra Grundwerg, Ira Herman, David Kalman, Susan Katz, Ellen Koplow, Meyer Koplow, Janice Newman, Joseph Orlian, Bruce Povman, Shelly Rasekh, Dawn Reich, Keith Reich, Laura Rotter, Rochelle Sherman, Lisa Steinmetz, Judy Tretin, Stanley Wasserman and Diane Werner

MJ & Dr. Barry Kanner MJ and Barry Kanner have been part of the Riverdale community since August 2001 and are the proud parents of Pamela, Joseph, and Benny. They joined the WHHS community in 2010, when Pamela came to the school. Simchas Torah holds special meaning in the Kanner household: in 1989, a mutual friend introduced MJ and Barry during the celebration outside The Carlebach Shul. They had already completed their undergraduate education, MJ at the University of Michigan and Barry at Columbia College. They married in 1991 and settled on Manhattan's Upper East Side while Barry trained in Diagnostic Radiology at NYU Medical Center and MJ completed a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Columbia University. While living in Manhattan, the Kanners were active in the Kehilath Jeshurun and Ramaz community, where they still have many family members and friends. After 10 years, the Kanners moved to Riverdale. (Years ago…we won’t say when…Barry attended high-school in Riverdale at Rabbi

Riskin's yeshivah.) Riverdale proved to be a great fit. The Kanners are members of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, where MJ serves on the Board of Trustees. Aside from work and kids' activities, they stay busy with a home that is always open to friends, old and new, for Shabbas meals. MJ enjoys volunteering time to WHHS, particularly in the area of recruitment. Currently, Barry is an Attending Vascular/Interventional Radiologist with White Plains Radiology Associates. MJ is a bilingual (English/Hebrew, Spanish) speech-language pathologist.

LAURA & DR. MERRILL ROTTER Merrill and Laura Rotter are the proud parents of Elana, Ben and Saul. Elana, who graduated from WHHS in 2010, and Saul, who is in the graduating class of 2013, had uniquely similar experiences. Uniquely similar? While each of them is a unique student and learned in his or her own way, they shared the benefits of the approach to education which attracted Merrill and Laura to the school in the first place: individualization, warmth, informality, and, most importantly, a primary focus on their growth as menshlich young adults. Day school education and the critical role it plays in assuring Jewish continuity is of paramount importance to Merrill, who served on the board of Solomon Schechter of Westchester and Laura, who is a board member at WHHS. Merrill has contributed his time to WHHS, consulting on development activities and chairing a task force exploring the academic possibilities that 21st century technology offer. Laura has brought her talents and experience in finance to the WHHS board.

Merrill was a member of the first high school graduating class of the Brandeis School, a Conservative Jewish day school in Long Island. He is a forensic psychiatrist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Laura, who graduated from Ramaz High School, is a financial analyst at Citibank, and a yoga teacher in White Plains. They are both very active at their shul, Bet Am Shalom, a Reconstructionist synagogue. In addition to board and committee leadership, Merrill directs the Purim Spiel each year and Laura teaches Jewish Yoga. Merrill and Laura feel that the acceptance at WHHS of all Jews from various denominations is a unique and important part of the WHHS message. It is a testament to the love and respect that school officials and teachers have for every individual; and that, in turn, is a key ingredient of the unique, but similarly caring and respectful young adults Elana and Saul have become.

SHIRA AND MITCHELL ZUCKER Shira and Mitchell Zucker have resided in Stamford for the past twenty-two years, where they have raised their five children, Dovi (WHHS class of 2010), Ellie (WHHS Class of 2011), Hannah (WHHS Class of 2014), Ephraim, who will be entering WHHS in September 2013, and Leeba, a third grader at Bi-Cultural Day School. They are active members of Congregation Agudath Sholom, in addition to being integral to the success of the Friendship Circle of Stamford, which brings together teenage volunteers and children of special needs. Shira, a graduate of the University of Maryland, serves as the volunteer Food Services Coordinator for Bi-Cultural Day School. She is the official Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor for the Hebrew Wizards School of Stamford, and takes pride in having tutored many children in the Greenwich-Stamford area. Shira has volunteered in many capacities for Chabad, Congregation Agudath Shalom (where she was a member of the Board), Young Israel of Stamford, and Jewish Family Services. Shira has been involved in Camp Gan Israel of Greenwich

since its inception, and has also given much time to her children’s schools, Bi-Cultural Day School and WHHS. Mitchell, a graduate of SUNY Binghamton, is the Vice President of Marketing & Investor Relations at Pegasus Capital Advisors, L.P. Mitchell is currently Gabbai Rishon at Congregation Agudath Sholom, where he previously ran the Junior Congregation and helped revitalize the teen minyan. He is a member of the Chevra Kadisha and an active participant at Yeshiva Bais Binyamin. He is a past member of the Eruv Committee and has been active in the Fairfield County Jewish Baseball League. As parents of two WHHS graduates and one current student and another one entering next year, they are extremely thankful for all that WHHS has done and will continue to do to help each child grow in their own way. WHHS was able to provide a Jewish education for their son Dovi starting in tenth grade after attending public school his whole life. Their daughter Ellie was allowed to foster her individual talent as a photographer by being named the official photographer of the school, its website and having her photographs displayed outside the lunchroom where they are still on display to this day. Lastly, their daughter Hannah has been able to take advantage of the AP and Honors classes as well as Basketball and Theatre.
