Victor Alcami‘Guerilla Gardens’ is a two program commercial development, a wildflower nursery and a graffiti supply store/workshopping space. In a brief where we were challenged to house traditionally associated programs, French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseaus’ perspectives towards beauty and its social constructionism led my architectural exploration into colour. Rousseau’s founding of the terms Amour De Soi, how our self-expression, individual impressions, and personal convictions create beauty, and its converse, Amour De Propre, beauty mass perspective and collective schools of thought, delineate the hierarchy between flowers and as criminal. ‘Guerilla Gardens’ thus uses colour as a bridging device between the fragmented identity of beauty, using contemporary LED farming strategies, Negative Afterimage Optical, Stained Glass Skylights and a Turrell Skyscape to create a kaleidoscopic experience between both commercial programs.
