A NOTE FROM THE DESIGNER: The 2018 ADDY show book was meticulously crafted for tonight’s winners, attendees, and posterity. Every detail is meant to be a new moment of discovery for you, the reader. Each design flourish has been thoughtfully placed to create a luxury experience like no other. The typography clearly pays homage to the Swiss tradition, but also nods to current trends. It is safe to say, with all certainty, that this will be remembered as the greatast ADDY show book ever.

A note from the printer: We received the mechanical files for this book at 8:57 p.m. on the evening of an already extended drop-dead, final due date. Besides the numerous typos, grammatical errors, and low-resolution images, it contained requests for outlandishly expensive printing techniques that were never discussed, and in some cases, haven’t been done in decades. When we reached out to the designer to come to a mutually agreeable solution, we were told to “just print the [expletive] thing.” We agreed to do just that, only on the terms that the effects would be removed, this disclaimer would be added, and the designer would never contact us again.

This is my third time co - chairing the ADDY awards . I don’ t do it for the money. I ’ve got enough, much more than I ’ll ever need. I do it to do it . The ADDYs are my ar t form. Other people paint beautifully on canvas or write wonder ful poetr y. I like working on the ADDYs, preferably great ADDY shows . That’s how I get my kicks . Our one goal , and this year’s show theme, was to be the G reatast ever. I can say with 100% conf idence that we did it . A s I ’ve always said, “Be not afraid of greatness . Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” You’re welcome.

This award was created to recognize out standing achievement and ser vice in the communications industr y. Recipient s of this award are individual s who, through a consistent, high degree of original thinking in their f ield, have lef t an indelible mark on the Western New York creative community. Winners have a distinguished record of achievement over an ex tended period of time, which includes contributions to their companies, the industr y, and the community. This award is named in honor of two prominent f igures in Buffalo adver tising: longtime Buffalo ad executive David I . Lev y and Alex Osborn, the inventor of brainstorming and manager of the Buffalo off ice of Bar ton, Durstine & Osborn (precursor to the global agency BBDO).

PRESIDENT - GLUCKWORKS A s Bobby Knight once said, “All of us learn to write in the second grade. Most of us go on to greater things .” So, if you’re wondering what el se I did to earn this award (other than write a few million words), here’s what I ’ve done in my career: • Scrubbed in on surger y. •C  alled it the “Dwight D. Martin House” in a printed brochure. • Almost got f ired for an April Fool s’ joke. • I nterviewed someone in my car on the way to day care. • G ot to work for my parent s . • Pl ayed the Coffee Game.™ • Almost got beat up in a bar in Minnesota. •C  o -authored a book . Then full-authored another one. • G ot mistaken for an intern (I was 35). • Won some awards . • Realized it’s not about the awards . • Met some great people. • Made a few enemies . • Lost too many friends . • A sked a question or two. • Learned a lot more than I ever thought I would. V P, C R E AT I V E D I R E C T O R - C R OW L E Y W E B B Joe Crowley was a one - of-a-kind human being. From the moment I was introduced to him, I knew he was not at all the sor t of stiff businessman I thought he might be. He was warm, caring, and hil arious . And his dedication to giving back to the community was unrivaled. This mindset was per vasive in the Crowley Webb culture back then and is still ver y much alive today. So it’s absolutely f itting that this award be named for Joe – and I ’m truly honored to be it s recipient this year. I do feel I owe it to Joe to use this space to do what he did – encourage others to step up and get involved. Let’s all consider how great our jobs are. This is advertising. While it’s important and difficult at times, no one is killing themselves physically. We sit and talk and meet. Sit some more. Go home to our nice houses in the evening. Maybe hit the gym. Why not volunteer? Truth be told, after a stressful week, nothing unwinds and puts it all into perspective quite like giving of your time to an organization that really needs it. So do it. Join a board. (Come on, you’re smart and talented). Call Friends of Night People and see when you can help serve a meal. Donate blood. Become a mentor to a Buffalo Prep student. There are countless ways to get involved, both big and small. But do something. I promise it’ll make you feel good.

BR IT TNEY SIKOR A DESIGNER - WHITE BICYCLE

“Work hard and stay humble.” One of my favorite prints from college has this quote on it, and had been created purely for fun. At the time I didn’ t think the phrase would stick with me into the early years of my career but it has. The print still ser ves as a source of inspiration and friendly reminder that a little hard work can go a long way. College was a time of discover y for me. I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do, I just knew I enjoyed anything that allowed me to be creative. This uncertainty led to me starting off as a photography major and two years into the program I realized that it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. Ultimately I found my way into the design program at Villa Maria College, where I was fortunate enough to have Julie Zack and Bob Grizanti as professors. During college is al so when I was first introduced to the Advertising Club of Buffalo and thanks to the encouragement of Jordan Hegyi I decided to sign on as the student liaison and eventually became a board member. Being a part of the board offered valuable experiences and allowed me to meet some great people along the way. Af ter graduation with a little luck and persistence I l anded a gig at White Bicycle. This May I will have been with White Bike for four years, which has been f illed with many wonder ful experiences and has allowed me to work on a wide range of project s for various client s . I ’m grateful to be a par t of this team; ever y day I get to work alongside some of the most talented designers who are equally as awesome human beings . Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey so far, especially to my family and Andy. Cheers to keeping on this journey, continuing to work hard and, of course, staying humble along the way.

I think fashion is an art form - you might call it decorative or applied art as opposed to fine art, but what's the distinction? Because the same amount of artistic expression goes into clothes, a piece of pottery or a painting. I've founded a museum on the basis that I think it's an artistic form that should be remembered. I think fashion galleries such as the one at the V&A and the one at the Metropolitan in New York - are very relevant. Fashion can tell you what people wore at a certain period just as pottery can tell you what their tea parties were like. I don't think the fact that these things were designed to be practical distinguishes them from fine art. You could say a painting is designed to go on the wall, but if it were made as a fresco, where it was part of the wall, would you say it was not art because it was practical?

Fine art at the moment is no longer particularly concerned with beauty, so you could say that fashion - which is always about a concept of beauty, whether or not everyone agrees on the concept - is more relevant, more artistic, than the garbage they put out as conceptual. If you look at it that way, fine art may go by the wayside, and fashion, which has a bit more effort put into it, will take over.

The two-day event kicks off with Portfolio Day, a portfolio scholarship review where students have the opportunity to have their work reviewed by professors and artists alike, for both admissions and scholarship awards. The next day follows with the opening of the All High Exhibition, designed to showcase the work of high-school artists from around the area. If that’s not enough, thousands of dollars in scholarships are being offered for all types of submissions – from student works in every medium to the most proficient portfolios.

Hello Teachers and Guidance Counselors, We are aware that at your school, there are plenty of talented, young artists that possess the skills to create great art. Daemen College wants to showcase the work of those students and help set them on a path to artistic success. All High Art Weekend is a great place to start. The two-day event kicks off with Portfolio Day, a portfolio scholarship review where students have the opportunity to have their work reviewed by professors and artists alike, for both admissions and scholarship awards. The next day follows with the opening of the All High Exhibition, designed to showcase the work of high-school artists from around the area. If that’s not enough, thousands of dollars in scholarships are being offered for all types of submissions – from student works in every medium to the most proficient portfolios. Enclosed are materials to help promote the event to your students: - Posters to hang in hallways or classrooms - Flyers to hand out to students - Gallery cards for you to fill out for your students’ submissions We support the opportunity for students to experience the work of other students, as well as the opportunity to show their work off to others.
