STEM Centre
Manchester is known for its scientific discoveries from the likes of Rutherford splitting the atom to Alan Turing pioneering Ai and inventing the Turing test. How ever in recent years there has a been a decline in people undertaking stem subjects within Manchester with graphs suggesting that by 2025 there will be a large demand of jobs in the stem field. To solve this problem, I propose a STEM interactive centre which in collaboration with the university of Manchester It will be a means to inspire individuals from an early age to gain interest within the field of STEM tying it to growth of the individual on an intellectual level but as well as the interest level which is reflected in the buildings design. The proposed STEM interactive centre includes exhibitions zones for engineering, technology, physics, chemistry and biology, where visitors of all ages will be able to experience the beauty of STEM subjects through hands on activities and experiments such as VR, robot wars, that will foster curiosity within individuals regarding STEM to get them interested in pursuing STEM. The STEM centre is not only a facility that promotes STEM but also actively engages in it through the LABs and offices which in collaboration with graphene innovations Manchester research sustainable material alternatives for commercial use. As well as a lab where real scientists experiment in aim to create new material technology the centre also runs a 3 day summer school which is funded by Manchester university which starts during the first week of august and this school is ran throughout the whole summer, where year 6 and year 9’s from all over Manchester will have an opportunity to learn about and experience STEM first hand, as this will prepare them for staring secondary and GCSE. Hence there are classrooms with a to hold 60 students, 30 pupils from year 6 and 30 pupils from year 9. They are also facilitated with a library and a place to stay which will be the Ibis hotel which is right next to the STEM centre. Aswell as classroom and exhibitions the Centre provides a café and a restaurant as another way to generate income. Overall, the Centre’s aim is to bring interest of stem subjects back into Manchester making it a scientific haven it once was.
