What do you do when your phone rings and on the other end is a frantic reader urging you to “save their magazine?” What do you do when that one phone call turns into dozens?
For us, the answer was easy. We contacted the good folks at Kentucky Explorer and asked if we could help. The global pandemic was the last straw and they were closing after 34 years. We offered to continue portions of Kentucky Explorer in Kentucky Monthly and give its 30,000 loyal readers a new home.
We continue to run Kentucky Explorer features about Kentucky history, along with reader-submitted stories and genealogy.

"Kentucky Monthly magazine has always been a travel resource for my husband and me throughout the years. When we renovated the Belle Louise Historic Guest House in 2020, it was our first choice to use for promoting our venue. The staff has been so helpful, and the reach of the magazine and its impeccable reputation have benefited us greatly with visibility and new bookings." Led by an Executive Director, a passionate Board of Directors, a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator and 2 part-times nurses, residents are served by Compassionate Companions who commit to a five hour shift each week. And we have over 200 other volunteers that help us keep our house in operation (grass cutting, meals, and such).
Each resident is special and has their own sweet story. Jim, a homeless Navy veteran, had liver cancer. We remember how grateful he was calling Hildegard House “the best bed and breakfast in Louisville!”We were able to connect Jim with a wonderful veteran’s group who provided him a proper military burial. Thelma, 99 years old, came to us from the Inpatient Hosparus
Unit. She never married and outlived all of her family. She celebrated every holiday with us, even her 100th birthday. Bettie was a 77-year-old woman who came to Hildegard House from home where she had a Hosparus team. She lived alone and had only one daughter from whom she was estranged. Her had cancer that had spread throughout her body.

ildegard House is a community of volunteers who provide compassionate care and a home for our neighbors at the end of life who are homeless or have no family to care for them (or resources to pay for caregivers or long term care) so that they may die with dignity. Residents receive care from Hosparus Health just like they would in their own home. We provide the home and family so that they can access hospice care. We are able to serve three residents at a time. The average length of stay is weeks, with the range being 8 hours to nine months. This ends up being close to 50 residents per year.

disease, came to Hildegard House from University of Louisville Hospital. Her only son was an over-road truck driver who had no home. There are so many more individuals like Jim, Thelma, Bettie and Hazel. We could fill a book with all of the special ones we have had the honor of serving. Hildegard House does not charge a fee or bill insurance. We are a home and family. We rely totally on donations and God’s grace, and serve in the spirit of St. Hildegard of Bingen, who operated a hospice in her monastery in 12th Century Germany. We provide care to those of faith and no faith. All are welcome. Due to COVID, we have had to take a pause in accepting residents. Our Compassionate Community is ready to re-open as soon as it is safe. For now, we need donations to keep our house open and pay ongoing bills. The work of Hildegard House is sacred and we are blessed to be called to serve our most vulnerable neighbors. Make the holidays special for kids and families in your community. Learn how: kosair.org/celebrate Itzel was diagnosed with a hearing processing disorder at an early age. She needed hearing aids and a personal FM system, something insurance would not fully cover. When Itzel’s mom, Alma, reached out to Kosair Charities for help, the Kosair Kids® Financial Assistance Program covered the cost of her equipment. Soon after, Itzel’s school performance improved drastically. You can help more kids like Itzel reach their potential and overcome their obstacles.
