The celebration of the Fortieth (XL) Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL), to be held June 6 to 12, 2010, in Santo Domingo, is an excellent opportunity to share knowledge and experiences regarding the library’s best practices, to familiarize ourselves with the most recent advances in the field, to interact with library products and services providers, as well as to be able to exchange ideas with professional colleagues. We are very pleased with this year’s conference theme selected by ACURIL’s President, Prof. Carmen Margarita Santos Corrada, Innovation and Impact of Information in the Caribbean: The Evidence-‐Based Practice of the Information Professional. In agreement with the theme, the design of our logo presents the phases and characteristics of the action-‐research method along with the evidence-‐based practice in librarianship (EBL). The logo pinpoints the methodological procedure through which the qualitative research instruments are applied to collect evidences, the theoretical reflection, and the planning and improvement of the library praxis. The Dominican librarians, through the Local Organizing Committee, have made their best to secure the adequate infrastructure to serve the needs of the conference, and to select the cultural and social activities, to ensure the success of this most important event. For us, Dominicans, it will be a great honor and pleasure to receive you all in our country. We are looking forward to meeting all of you.

ACURIL XL REPÚBLICA DOMINICANA, 6-‐12 JUNE 2010 Innovation and Impact of Information in the Caribbean: Evidence-‐based Practice of the Information Professional

Conference Objectives This year’s Acurilean event presents itself as a proactive continuing education and professional development space, strengthened and enriching for the members and other interested professionals. With the diverse conference activities provided covering the theme Innovation and Impact of Information in the Caribbean: The Evidence-‐Based Practice of the Information Professional, attendees are expected to learn the key elements of the Evidence-‐based process in order to be able to apply the steps geared to identify “the best available evidence moderated by the needs and preferences of the user in order to improve the qualiy of his professional judgement” (Booth, 2002). Attendees are expected not only to acquire new knowledge but also to develop new skills, related to the theme, in order to apply the new knowledge in their daily professional endeavor, documenting the experience, and later on disseminating and sharing the information with other colleagues as part of the Community of Practice of ACURIL. The event has, as points of references throughout the conference, the postulates of significant learning, of David Paul Ausubel (1978), by observing the level of knowledge that each one has previous to the exposure of the new knowledge and skills development, and after the experience, the identification of the level of new knowledge and skills acquired; the five disciplines presented by Peter M. Senge (1992) placed into action as strategies in the seminars and workshops presented; and likewise, the key elements to develop and cultivate the acurilean community of practice, according to Etienne Wenger, McDermott y Snyder (2002), as well as the steps of the EBPLIP as proposed by Booth & Brice (2004) and Crumley & Koufogiannakis (2004). Thematic Areas Within the general framework of the conference, five thematic areas have been selected: I. Administration of Information Services II. Organization and Representation of Information III. Reference and Information Services for the User IV. Information and Research Competencies V. Innovation and Impact of Information : Assessment of the Evidence-‐Based Practice The areas will be worked out through the different key conferences, seminars and special wokshops.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INTRODUCTION TO EVIDENCE-‐BASED PRACTICE IN THE LIBRARY AND INFORMATION FIELD

Evidence-‐based librarianship (EBL) is an approach to information science that promotes the collection, interpretation, and integration of valid, important and applicable user-‐reported, librarian-‐observed, and research-‐derived evidence. The best-‐available evidence moderated by user needs and preferences is applied to improve the quality of professional judgements. Andrew Booth
