Following the below tips should prepare you for the holiday season and keep your pets safe. The holidays are a busy and fun time of the year, best celebrated with happy and healthy pets and family.

Just like for people, buying costumes early before they sell out is smart thinking. But ensure your pet is into costumes and will be comfortable wearing one.

Seasonal outings can be fun for your dog, too. Call ahead to verify the pumpkin patch is dog-friendly, and let your pup sniff out the perfect pumpkin. a Treat

In lieu of toxic chocolate or candy, bake your dog or cat something sweet. Pumpkin-based treats can be mixed with peanut butter for pups or fresh salmon for cats, and you can use a bat or ghost-shaped cookie cutter.

4. No Candy

Chocolate is dangerous and can be lethal for pets. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener, can also be poisonous to dogs. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures. And small amounts of xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar and loss of coordination and seizures.

5. Stay Inside & Safe

Due to scary costumes, noises, and tricks, keep your pets indoors, and if you give candy to trick-or-treaters, keep your pets away from doors. Also, make sure they have collars with IDs on them in case they get out.

6. No Glow

Glowing items can be dangerous for pets, so keep them out of reach. Jack-o-lantern candles can burn. Glow sticks, while non-toxic, can make pets vomit. And electric and battery-powered candles can shock, burn, or cause GI distress if ingested.

Fire Season Support

The Woodburn Fire District has received a $35,000 grant for the hiring of additional firefighters during the 2022 fire season. On July 8, two grantfunded firefighters began staffing WFD’s Brush 21, a small-scale fire engine specifically designed for rapid response to brush and grass fires.

WFD, along with fire service agencies across the state, was awarded the seasonal grant as a proactive means to temporarily increase firefighter staffing levels during the fire season. The grant program, administered by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office, is a result of Senate Bill 762 that was approved by legislators in the wake of the devastating 2020 wildland fires that destroyed thousands of structures and scorched more than 1 million acres.

Woodburn Fire Chief Joe Budge expressed appreciation for the grant funding, “In light of the wildfire seasons that we have experienced during recent years, the fire district would like to thank the state leadership for taking a proactive approach to strengthen the district’s firefighting capability. The temporary funding improves the district’s ability to quickly respond to wildland fires and helps to support the district’s overall mission to safeguard the community during the busy summer months.”

The grant funds have been used to temporarily hire two of the districts volunteer firefighters: Jared

Redmon and Ian Niktab. The two will be staffing Brush 21 on Fridays through Sundays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., when the district’s peak activity engine (Engine 20) is off-duty. Redmon and Niktab will respond to overlapping emergency calls when the career firefighter-staffed engine is not available due to engagement at a previous call. Brush 21 will also supplement career and volunteer firefighters in response to largescale incidents requiring multiple resources to mitigate. The seasonal firefighter employment will remain in place until the grant funds are exhausted in mid-September.

Redmon began his fire service career in 2019 as a member of the

district’s student resident volunteer program. Since joining the district, he has graduated from Chemeketa Community College with a degree in fire science, completed the emergency medical technician (EMT) certification program, and has plans to attend paramedic school this fall. Redmon is a proven member of the fire district, earning recognition as the 2020 Student of the Year, 2021 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year, and a unit commendation in 2020 for his part in saving several homes threatened by the Wilhoit Fire near Molalla.

Niktab began volunteering with the fire district in December 2021 and has already earned a Firefighter 1 certification, which involves more than 200 hours of classroom lecture and hands-on training. Niktab is also nearing completion of the EMT training program that requires the equivalent of six months of full-time college enrollment. Prior to pursuing a fire service career, Niktab had a very successful longstanding teaching position with the Woodburn School District. His passion and dedication to serving the community were significant factors in his selection for a seasonal position with the fire district.

The answer to that question is based on your unique financial profile and other factors such as your annual income, monthly debts and down payment amount.

ANNUAL INCOME

This is the combined annual income for you and your co-borrower (if applicable). Includes base salary, and if qualified, can also include commissions, bonuses, overtime, tips, invest ment income, alimony and child support.

DOWN PAYMENT

Get Pre-Approved at: LocalTrustedLender.com

This is a portion of the home purchase price that you pay upfront. In addition to the down payment, there will also be closing costs (if seller isn’t paying). It’s good to have some cash leftover to cover any repairs or unexpected expenses.

MONTHLY DEBT

This is the total monthly debt for you and your co-borrower. Includes minimum credit card payments, student loans, rent or other mortgage payments, alimony/child support payments, auto loans, and any other periodic payments.

DEBT-TO-INCOME (DTI)

Lenders use this ratio to determine if you can afford a monthly mortgage payment. It’s calculated by dividing your minimum monthly debt by your pre-tax income. Generally, a DTI of 45% or lower is considered excellent, meaning 45% of your income goes towards paying monthly debt.

HELLO, NEIGHBOR!

HEY THERE ! If we haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, my name is Stephanie Wells and I am the co-team lead of a group of real estate agents right here in Woodburn. I have three young boys, a wonderful husband and together we spend our free time volunteering, golfing or traveling. But again, I have three boys age 5 and younger, so free time is basically non existent!

I grew up in Mt. Angel, married my husband who’s originally from here and after selling our first home in Keizer we moved to Woodburn in 2013 and this has been home ever since. I’ve built a business and a reputation that revolves around our growing little town and am so proud to call Woodburn home!

I believe that the money generated from our local businesses needs to stay in Woodburn if at all possible. I’ve sat on the board of directors for Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce for over five years and am currently also on the board of directors for the North Willamette Habitat for Humanity.

At Living Local Northwest, brokered by eXp Realty, we strive to be experts in our field. Running home valuations, getting homes under contract for our buyers or strategizing how to invest in the market are definitely high on our list. In 2022 we have helped over 50 families buy or sell homes! We work in Oregon and Washington, with referral partners all across the country. As much as we love Oregon, and Woodburn, sometimes your work or family will take you elsewhere. We can help make that transition go smoothly. If you know, like and trust us, wouldn’t you want us to get you an agent we trust, as an extension of us?

I’m happy to chat more fully with you about real estate, development, small business, raising a family, getting involved in our local community – or anything else we can find common ground on!

Until we meet, be well. Stephanie Wells

Some Things to Celebrate

Canby Music recently celebrated its 2nd anniversary at its new home, a former residence that owner Brian Haines and his team converted into a store during the summer of 2020. And they welcomed its newest employee, Ryleigh Mulhern.

Ryleigh, a Country Christian High School senior who joined the Canby Music team six months ago, helps serve the store’s customers while also teaching piano, guitar, ukulele, clarinet, and voice. The lessons are her favorite part of the job, she admits.

The store also recently celebrated its 2nd year at its new location on the corner of 1st and Douglas. The new store “officially” opened on September 1, 2020, though the date is a bit squishy: Canby Music was technically operating out of both locations as it made its transition.

“When you’re in the middle of a move like we were, there’s no ‘real’ first day,” Brian says. “And then, one week later, the town was evacuated because of the fires. I promise I’m never moving again!”

With school back in session, Brian and his team are looking forward to a busy band season — their first “normal” one in the new location. Band rentals are a big part of their business, and they offer a lot of support to students who are learning the ins and outs of their new instrument.

KNOCK-KNOCK!

Ghosts, ghouls and other “creatures of the night” are set to take over the Canby Fairgrounds again this fall, for the 2022 edition of the Canby Haunted House (formerly known as the Clackamas County Scare Fair) — and this year’s version promises to be the spookiest one yet.

Creatures of the Night, the haunting experts who have collaborated with the fairgrounds for three straight years of thrills and chills, are set again to present this year’s uniquely tailored Halloween experience, “Knock, Knock,” which will take place over four weekends in October.

To say Creatures CEO David D. Jones is excited would be a bit of an understatement.

“Halloween is one of the most universal of celebrations for us as a people,” David says. “Halloween is the one day that we feed the people who come to our door. It’s the one day that every child is safe. It’s the one day that we all agree to play the same game — and that’s worth protecting.”

David and his nonprofit team, which has included family, friends, and hundreds of volunteers over the years, got into the scaring business sort of by accident.

“Creatures of the Night started nine years ago in the Mary S. Young Park in West Linn, where we accidentally created an urban legend,” he says. “We literally got into haunting as a lark, as a goof. It wasn’t for ‘realsies’, it was just us being silly. We entered a contest, and we realized we were

weirdly, really good at this. So we continued, and we started studying and doing research and becoming better at it.”

Creatures of the Night creates highly crafted, thoughtful haunts that are uniquely tailored for each year and location they partner with. Though the team presented an in-person haunt in a different location at the fairgrounds last fall — this year’s will be completely different. The haunters also rely heavily on ancient myths, more modern urban legends, local lore, and interviews with hundreds of area residents, business owners, and leaders to produce their unique experiences.

“If you just do a collage of mad scientist, alien, Godzilla monster and so on, it doesn’t resonate,” David explains. “You’ve got to have a cohesive story, a narrative. It’s got to be like a three-act play: beginning, middle, and end. You start with universal stories, and then you get more specific. You have to reflect the stories and fears of people now. So when we start writing the story in early spring or the turn of the year, we’re trying to guess what people are going to be scared of 10 months from now.”

And when we say Creatures’ haunts are “uniquely tailored” and “hand crafted,” we mean that literally. David and his team spend the weeks leading up to October training volunteers and staff — as well as building their haunted houses and all of their associated set pieces by hand. Many of their volunteer actors who participate in the haunt also lend a hand or, you know, paw, claw, talon, or fin.  The actors, which the outfit usually refers to as “creatures” or “haunters,” are a huge part of the experience — and much more goes into it than you might think. As David explains, these are not people pulled off the street, given a mask, and simply told to lunge and go “Rawr!” at whomever passes by. For Creatures of the Night, there is an in-depth training and character development process spanning at least two months.

SEASONAL ATTRACTION CANBY HAUNTED HOUSE

“They are a full character: There is a history, there is a complete story — and it’s actually a tragic story,” David says. “Like Frankenstein’s monster, every monster was somebody who was on a hero’s journey, which is what a haunt really is. We’re creating an environment where we tell a story, but the guest is the hero of the story. They’re the ones that have to fight the monsters. They have to figure their way out of the maze.”

But as to the specifics of what guests might experience at the Canby Haunted House this year, David’s lips are as sealed as Billy Butcherson’s in Hocus Pocus, saying it would be like a magician revealing his secrets — before the show. The only way to find out is to dare to enter the Canby Haunted House for yourselves.

The Canby Haunted House will be open from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 7 through the 29th. It will take place in the 4-H Hall at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Events Center, located at 694 Northeast 4th Avenue in Canby. For more information, visit creaturesofthenighthalloween.com or connect with Creatures of the Night on Facebook at facebook.com/CreaturesHaunt.

COMMUNITY

When it comes to community involvement, Anthony Veliz is somewhat of a poster child. The third-generation resident of Woodburn grew up under the influence of Cesar Chavez, the American labor leader and civil rights activist who started the United Farm Workers union. His parents were proud farm workers, and from the beginning, Veliz was getting involved, taking notes along the way.

“I’ve always been around communication, community outreach and engagement advocacy,“ Veliz says.

His passion for community and communications led him to earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the Portland State University, followed by a master’s in higher education administration from the University of Rhode Island.

Upon completion of his master’s, Veliz worked at Nike as the U.S. Community Relations Manager in the late ’90s. Subsequently, he became the director of Chemeketa Community College Access Programs and the coordinator of the college’s High School Equivalency Program. Continuing in education, he became the first elected Latino school board member of the Woodburn School District and its director of public and community relations.

In 2009, he forged his own path, starting a public relations and marketing firm. Adapted from Nike’s

famous catchphrase “Just Do It,” IZO, when said aloud, means “I did it” in Spanish.

With the motto, “People Focused Purpose Driven,” IZO is not your everyday PR and marketing firm. It’s an Oregon-based multicultural marketing agency designed to create strategies and creative content that reaches those who are underrepresented within communities. Veliz represents clients such as Portland Art Museum, Portland General Electric, Woodburn is sponsored by at AND BEYOND Woodburn and Beyond is all about highlighting the bes t the Woodburn area has to offer, including local leaders who are making a difference, such as Anthony Veliz, a third-generation resident of Woodburn and Latinx community stand-out.

The goal is clear: Help organizations develop strategies and creative marketing that reaches the underrepresented LatinX community.

Energy Trust, and many more.

In order to create work that reflects the many identities of its customers, Veliz made sure his company was not a homogenous group. Every member of the company is both bicultural and bilingual, representing various countries throughout the Americas. Veliz says, “[The Latinx community] is really a very diverse group. For example, there are 15-plus ways to say banana in Spanish.”

In addition to IZO, Veliz helped co-found OYEN Emotional Wellness Center, which began as a grassroots mobile clinic to help ease the mental effects of

Health Authority. With business partner Melinda Avila, MSW, Veliz helped establish a mobile crisis team of 15 bilingual and bicultural therapists to help people deal with the mental health complications of COVID. When funding came to an end, the need was still apparent, so the two started OYEN, now a private practice.

As the only bilingual and bicultural mental health clinic in Oregon, OYEN has touched the lives of many. Patients will not be

the pandemic. With the death toll rising, especially among the Latinx population, he realized there was a need for counseling in his community and a need for culturally responsive mental care.

“I started hosting these town halls, which were basically Zoom meetings, but quickly, I built momentum. Pretty soon, we went from six organizations to 100 and all over the state.” Through this journey, Veliz secured a $5 million Equity Grant from the Oregon

With so many accomplishments on his resumé — including currently leading the funding effort for a $50 million Woodburn recreational community center — it’s clear that Veliz’s impact on the Latinx community is singular. An exceptional man for an exceptional community. 

CARVE THE PERFECT PUMPKIN

Believe it or not, everyone can be an artist when it comes to pumpkin carving, but it is harder than it looks. Follow the following eleven tips, and your gourds will look and smell good the entire trick-or-treating season. Get carving!

 Start with the right pumpkin. Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve.

 Cut from the bottom, not the top.

Cutting your “lid” from the bottom of the pumpkin helps prevent the sides from caving in later.

 If you carve from the top, cut lid on an angle. This way it won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it, like it would with a straight up-and-down cut. A boning knife should work well for this.

 Scoop out all the pulp (and then some).

You can buy a special “claw” for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream scoop will do just fine. Thin the inner wall of the “face” area to 1¼-inch thick, so it will be easier to pierce the shell.

 Sketch your design to size on paper first.

Tape it to the front of your pumpkin. Using a fork or pencil, poke holes along the lines you want to carve.

 Try holding the pumpkin in your lap.

It’s easier to create features when the face is gazing up at you. It is suggested to use a serrated kitchen knife or an X-Acto knife.

 Start by making simple rough cuts.

If you get the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later.

 Use your scraps creatively.

Make a tongue, pipe, or hair accessories out of discarded pieces of pumpkin shell, for example.

 Keep your pumpkin fresh.

Spread petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, revive it with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.

 Create a chimney.

First, leave the lid on for a few minutes while the candle burns. Cut a small hole where the pumpkin has blackened up top. Or, save yourself the stress and opt for a battery-operated votive.

Sprinkle cinnamon inside.

That way, when you light the candle, your jack-o’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. Yum.

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick)

1 tsp vanilla

4-5 cups mini marshmallows

3/4 cup Reeses pieces

3/4 cup candy corn

3/4 cup white chocolate pretzels (chopped)

DIRECTIONS

Pop your popcorn and put in a large bowl. In a large pan over medium high heat, melt your butter. Add in your vanilla and marshmallows, stirring constantly until melted and creamy.

Pour the marshmallow mixture over your popcorn and stir until popcorn is fully coated.

Allow to set for a couple minutes, then stir in half the Reeses pieces and candy corn. Separate your popcorn into 10 sections.

Press in the white chocolate pretzels (they’ll melt if they go in sooner) into each section.

The Tale of Stingy Jack

Exploring the myth behind Halloween’s pumpkin pastime

Oh autumn, what a wonderful time of year! A time to break out all my favorite sweaters just as the leaves are turning into vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. And best of all, the arrival of Halloween, my favorite holiday. My nickname as a kid was Little Miss Mess Maker, as carving pumpkins has always been my favorite Halloween activity–one time I even recreated a horror movie with gourd guts. While carving pumpkins is extremely popular, most people don’t know the myth behind the mess and tradition.

Long ago in a small Irish town, a drunkard named Stingy Jack earned his moniker after tricking the Devil himself. Jack was notorious in his little town, and Satan had heard of his mischievous deeds. Jack may have been known for being a drunken scoundrel—scuttered and bollocksed—but he was also a clever lad, so he convinced the Devil to take him to his favorite pub as a last request and to pay for the bill. When the tab came due, Jack convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin so Jack could pay for the drinks, then they could leave for the underworld.

The Devil was fooled. And instead of paying up, Jack dropped the coin into his pocket alongside a silver crucifix, trapping the fiery foe in the form of a coin. The Devil begged Stingy Jack to

release him. And so Jack released him, but only on the condition that the Devil would not bother him for another year, and should Jack die, Satan could not claim his soul.

True to his word, the Devil didn’t return for a whole year. When the Devil finally reappeared to claim his soul, Jack tricked the Devil to climb a fruit tree and pick him a last meal to eat before traveling to Hell. Once the Devil reached the top of the tree, Jack carved a cross into the bark of the tree trunk, trapping the Devil high among the branches. Again, Satan begged Jack for freedom, but this time, Jack made the Devil promise to not bother him for another 10 years. Of course, the Devil agreed to his terms and was freed.

Jack died soon thereafter. Because of his mischief and sins, he was denied entrance to Heaven. Upset by the trickery and scheming, and true to his word of not claiming his soul, Satan denied Jack entrance into Hell, too. As a parting gift, the Devil gifted Jack a lump of burning coal to light his way

HOLIDAY HISTORY

and sent him off into the night. Jack placed the burning coal in a hollowed out turnip, and he has roamed the earth ever since. The Irish began calling this eerie creature “Jack of the Lantern,” or “Jack O’Lantern” for short.

In Ireland and Scotland, people began carving their own unique versions of jack-o’-lanterns, cutting terrifying faces into turnips, potatoes,

beets, or rutabagas, and lighting and displaying them near doors or windows to frighten away Stingy Jack and other evil spirits. In the mid-1800s, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the jack-o’-lantern tradition with them when they moved to the U.S. And they soon found that pumpkins, a large fruit native to America, made for perfect jack-o’-lanterns.

Since then, there have been many attempts in popular culture to revive this long-forgotten tradition of carving jack-o’-lanterns from turnips. In 2015, due to a severe pumpkin shortage caused by severe rain, the charity English Heritage called for Brits to rekindle their love for turnip carving and return to the original tradition of turnip jack-o’lanterns. English Heritage even went so far as to install many ghoulish turnip jack-o’-lanterns at Dover Castle to inspire others to do the same. Whether carving trunips will become popular again is still unknown.

In Ireland and Scotland, people began carving their own unique versions of jacko’-lanterns, cutting terrifying faces into turnips, potatoes, beets, or rutabagas, and lighting and displaying them near doors or windows to frighten away Stingy Jack and other evil spirits.

There are, however, many benefits to turnip carving over pumpkin carving. There’s no stringy pumpkin mess or seeds to clean out. Turnips are quite small and portable, so they can actually be hung like little lanterns. Also, turnips are cheap! So you can afford to make dozens and dozens if you’re so inclined. If they’re careful with a knife, older kids can carve a turnip by themselves because they’re so much simpler and smaller. The red-white color and eerie roots are scarier than pumpkins. After you scoop out the insides of the turnip, you can make mashed turnips. Yum! And because they’re available year round, you can carve turnips for more than just jack-o’-lanterns — votive holders, artwork or whatever you want.

So, there you have it. I love it when holidays and their fun-filled activities have such a rich history as Halloween and the Stingy Jack origin of pumpkin carving. And the fact that the history is also a ghost story is even more fun! Whether you choose to carve a pumpkin or turnip, I hope you and yours have a safe, fun, messy, and memorable holiday.

Sophia is the youngest addition to the Long Bros. crew, and perhaps the best received. In fact, the position of Certified Snuggle Bunny was created especially for her this last Easter! She continues to exceed all expectations in every task assigned her: customer cuddling, freight floor frolicking, and appearing absolutely adorable.

In her free time, Sophia enjoys eating carrots and blueberries. You can find her shopping around the store if you look down. Her favorite place to visit is Grandma’s house.

She says her best skill is putting smiles on the faces of the Long Bros. customers and fellow employees. Sophia highly recommends welded wire for constructing the very best bunny hutches!

It’s the roof head for Oregon autumn

CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS

Gunk clogs your gutters any time of the year, but especially in rainy Oregon. It’s imperative we clean our gutters at least once every season.

TRIM THE FOLIAGE

Trimming branches over your roof and gutters is key, but drains are important too! Check the drains around your home for debris and foliage that could cause clogging, which is a recipe for disaster in the form of costly repairs!

UPGRADE YOUR GUTTERS

If your gutters are old or damaged (or look like they were installed by a fiveyear-old with a toy hammer), then it’s time for an Amerimax upgrade!

Gutters with a micro-mesh filter promise that only water enters the drainage system, which reduces clogging but also the need for frequent cleaning on a ladder.

Come to Long Bros. for solutions to all your home maintenance needs!

And now is a great time to visit Long Bros. because when the seasons change, new home products are released. Mark and Kelly are sure to stock something new for you!
