The Cost of Freedom

How America’s day of remembrance began

Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is more than just the unofficial start to summer. It’s a solemn day of remembrance, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Although the holiday has evolved over time, the origins of this important day lie deeply rooted in the nation’s history, tracing all the way back to the aftermath of the Civil War.

Origins of Memorial Day

In the wake of the Civil War, which claimed more than 600,000 American lives, towns across the nation began holding ceremonies to honor the fallen soldiers. The first official Memorial Day, then known as Decoration Day, was established on May 5, 1868 by General John A. Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans. Logan called for a nationwide day of remembrance, encouraging people to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. The first large-scale ceremony was hosted at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Union and Confederate soldiers were laid to rest, symbolizing a national reconciliation after the war.

While Decoration Day was initially observed primarily in the northern states, it gradually spread throughout the nation, eventually growing to honor all U.S. military personnel who died in service to their country. The official date established for

Decoration Day was May 30th. The name Memorial Day was first coined in 1882, but it wasn’t until after World War I that it surpassed Decoration Day in popularity.

Memorial Day Becomes a National Holiday

As the years passed, the observance of Memorial Day grew, and in 1971 Congress officially designated it a federal holiday, shifting the observance to the last Monday in May. This official declaration allowed for a long weekend, providing people more time to participate in ceremonies and spend time with family.

The Evolution of Memorial Day

Today, Memorial Day is a blend of solemnity and celebration. Ceremonies, parades, and moments of silence to honor those who died in military service are traditional. One of the most notable observances takes place at Arlington National Cemetery, where the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is honored with a wreath-laying ceremony. While the holiday is typically associated with outdoor barbecues, family gatherings, and the start of summer, the true meaning of Memorial Day remains clear: it is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by military personnel throughout U.S. history.

Remembering the Fallen

On Memorial Day, Americans everywhere are encouraged to take part in a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. local time, as part of the National Moment of Remembrance Act. This act, passed by Congress in 2000, helps ensure that the holiday remains focused on in its true purpose — honoring the lives of those who gave their all for the freedoms we enjoy today.

As we celebrate the day, whether through leisure activities or community gatherings, it is essential to heed the profound sacrifices of those who have served. For above all else, Memorial Day is a reminder that the freedom we hold so dear came at a great cost, and that we must never forget the service and sacrifice of the men and women who made it possible.

Skimming Fraud

What it is and how to deter it

There seems to be no end to the type of fraud and scams we need to be aware of. In this article I want to provide some information about “skimming” — a type of fraud related to your credit or debit card.

Skimming incidents involve criminals installing hidden electronic devices that record cardholder information at ATMs and Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals. These incidents occur frequently at popular merchants, such as pharmacies, gas stations, and grocery stores. Criminals use the stolen (skimmed) debit or credit card data by re-encoding it on other cards for unauthorized ATM withdrawals or high-end purchases. Criminals may sell the stolen data from batches of cards to other groups.

We do take reports of skimming fraud, but ultimately, the United States Secret Service is the lead U.S. agency tasked with investigating access device fraud, a crime that affects consumers, businesses, and financial institutions. Skimming crimes account for hundreds of millions of dollars in losses annually to victims. At the local level, if evidence can lead us to a suspect, we can take the case and work with our federal partners.

ATM Skimming

ATM skimming devices are typically inserted deep inside the card read slot of ATMs and are usually impossible to detect from the ATM’s exterior. These devices can be designed to capture both the data on your magnetic stripe and your card’s. While ATM companies are constantly developing security features to combat skimmers, criminals are always adapting to these security features and changing their methods to deploy ATM skimming devices. To limit your risk of becoming an ATM skimming victim as much as possible, consider taking the following steps:

 Utilize ATMs inside of financial institutions, interior bays with security cameras, or closest to the drive-up window. These ATMs are harder targets for criminals.

 Look for obvious signs of tampering at the ATM, such as inoperable/broken lights, raised PIN pads or loose edges, loose components or stickers placed in unusual locations.

 Always shield your PIN entry with another hand as much as possible to prevent your PIN from being recorded by a “pinhole” camera.

POS Skimming

POS terminal skimming devices are typically overlays that cover either the entire top exterior of the POS terminal, or

just the keypad and EMV reader slot. These skimming devices can be difficult to detect because criminals will design plastic overlay shells that look identical to the top of the POS terminal and fit securely on the terminal. These skimming devices can be designed to capture both the data on your magnetic stripe and your card’s EMV chip. POS terminal overlay skimming devices will also capture all keypad entries, including your PIN, if a debit card is used. To limit your risk of becoming a POS terminal skimming victim, consider taking the following steps:

 Stay alert for obvious signs of tampering. You can gently pull up on the corners of the terminal or the keypad’s privacy shroud. If any part of the terminal appears or feels loose, do not use this terminal and immediately bring it to the attention of the merchant.

 Some merchants will use seals on the sides of the POS terminals instead of a debit card to avoid potentially compromising your PIN and giving criminals access to your checking account.

 If possible, consider using a credit card at POS terminals instead of a debit card to avoid potentially compromising your PIN and giving criminals access to your checking account.

If you believe you are the victim of fraud, immediately contact your card issuer’s fraud department to report the incident, ask that the card be deactivated, and ask that a new card be issued with a new PIN. Monitor the affected account closely. If you suffered a financial loss as a result of a skimming incident, consider filing a fraud affidavit with the card issuer and contact us to report the incident. Consider making purchases using cards that can transact through contactless payment (i.e. tap-topay) or with the card’s EMV chip, instead of the magnetic strip.

FIRE & RESCUE

Everyday Choices Can Improve Your Odds

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue cares about your health. This month, we encourage you to fight stress and serious illnesses by embracing healthy habits that will improve your overall quality of life. TVF&R offers the following tips to help you enjoy a heart-healthy lifestyle.

 Enlist a partner: Talk to loved ones, neighbors, and friends and invite them to participate in physical activities, share a balanced meal, and have a fun adventure. Everyday activities are always more fun with a partner — someone who will keep you company, inspire you to stick with a new routine, and encourage you on your health journey.

 Fuel your body: Eating balanced meals helps your body fight off sickness better and recover more quickly when you’re sick. Drink plenty of water. Enjoy fruits and vegetables throughout your day as snacks, toppings, side dishes, or in your main meal. A healthy diet also includes whole grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, lean meats, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. Limit the saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars in your diet.

 Get moving: It’s never too late to start being active every day. As little as 30 minutes of exercise a day can help keep your body fit to fight off illness and prevent injury. You can even do simple exercises at home. Consult your physician to see what exercises will benefit you most. Carving out time to exercise has been shown to increase your energy level, reduce health risks, lower stress, improve your mood, and boost productivity. Regular physical activity is important for your overall health and fitness. It can also be a great source of fun.

 Get enough sleep: Physical activity can improve your quality of sleep. Try to get six to eight hours of sleep each night to re-charge your body.

 Ditch bad habits: Limit your alcohol and caffeine consumption, and quit smoking for good. Set healthy goals for yourself and celebrate when you achieve them.

 Team up with your doctor: Doctors can help with prevention, screening, and treatment. Don’t wait until you’re sick to schedule an appointment. They can help you prevent health problems or catch them early enough to help you beat them. Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers.

Everyday choices can improve your odds of fending off serious illnesses. These choices also pave the way for a happier, healthier life. For more information about adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle, visit www.tvfr.com.

Cherry Bombs and Cartoon Dreams

The explosive energy behind Prince Gnarls’ must-see artwork

Stephen Hinton, or as he is more affectionately known in artistic circles, Prince Gnarls, is both a fascinating artist and a fascinating human being. Combining the regal splendor of Prince Charles with the platinum soul sheen of Gnarls Barkley, the moniker Prince Gnarls evokes an appropriate image of the artist: a man of distinct talent and style who understands that art can be profound and still have a sense of humor.

Like so many artists, Stephen began his journey as a child, drawing renditions of his favorite comic book and anime characters in addition to more standard art class fare. Drawn to pursue a career in such creative endeavors, he went to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco to study Traditional Illustration. Upon earning his degree, however, he found himself feeling somewhat disenfranchised with the opportunities available in that particular branch of the industry. The work was too static. There was too little freedom to express himself in ways that he perceived were meaningful.

It was a tumultuous period of his life, one marked by uncertainty, long bouts of extensive exploration, and hours of deep personal reflection. His epiphany came when he realized that what he really wanted to do was follow in the footsteps

of artists he admired such as James Jean and George Condo. In order to do so, however, he would need to master the art of painting. He had dabbled in it, of course, while attending art school, but there was much still to learn. And so, in 2011, Stephen shifted his focus to painting and developing

what would become his style.

Partially influenced by those masters he so respected, and informed by his early love of comics, anime and pop culture, Stephen Hinton perfected his technique and transformed himself into Prince Gnarls, the exciting, vibrant and cutting-edge artist he is today. Done mostly in acrylics on canvas, his pieces virtually jump off the wall, demanding your undivided attention. Teeming with color and sass, the images are playful, fun, and somehow both modern and nostalgic at once. With his pseudorealistic approach, signature anime-styled characters, and brilliant selection of pop culture references, Prince Gnarls is a name that will be on everyone’s lips in the coming years.

Since 2023, he has shown in group exhibitions at a number of venues in both Salem and Portland, and in 2024 had his first solo show called “Cherry Bomb Newsstand (at the Ford Gallery in Portland). Currently, he is part of a group exhibition in Salem called “Erotica: An Exhibition to Arouse” (at Salem on the Edge Gallery), and has multiple shows on the horizon. Stephen Hinton (a.k.a. Prince Gnarles) is an exciting up-andcoming artist. He also happens to be an incredibly warm, kind, and relatable human being. Support local artists! Check out his website: artxprincegnarls.com

AA Love Letter to Moms

And their beautiful skin, too

s a mom of six, I know firsthand how easy it is to fall to the bottom of our own priority list. Between snacks, sports, sibling squabbles, and the nonstop rhythm of motherhood, carving out even five minutes for ourselves can feel like a luxury.

But I want to challenge that idea. What if five minutes wasn’t just skincare — it was sacred? What if, instead of viewing our skincare routine as just another item on the to-do list, we saw it as a small but powerful act of self-love?

Because here’s the truth: when we show up for ourselves, even in the smallest ways, it ripples. It strengthens us. It reminds our children that caring for ourselves is not selfish — it’s smart. It’s necessary. It’s beautiful.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to reclaim your skincare time as a moment of peace:

1. Don’t wait until bedtime.

By 9 p.m., most of us are running on fumes. Instead of pushing your skincare off until the end of the night, try doing your full routine around 4 or 5 p.m. —right after the afterschool chaos, when you still have a little energy and the house is (relatively) calm. It’ll help you feel refreshed and keep you from skipping it later when you’re exhausted.

2. Keep it simple.

You don’t need a 10-step routine. Just a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum, and a nourishing

moisturizer with SPF during the day is enough to protect and glow. Nighttime? Add a retinol or exfoliating product two to three times a week, if your skin allows.

3. Make it intentional.

Light a candle. Play your favorite song. Use this time to take a few deep breaths. Look in the mirror and thank the woman staring back for showing up again and again. This isn’t vanity — it’s a moment of restoration.

To every mom reading this: you are worthy of care. You are worthy of soft skin, quiet moments, and rituals that remind you who you are outside of laundry, carpool, and endless dishes. Let your skincare routine be the doorway back to yourself. You deserve it.

A visually stunning Disney-Pixar movie, Coco honors Mexican culture through the holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The story follows Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s utter ban on music. After a mysterious journey to the Land of the Dead, Miguel uncovers hidden family secrets and learns the true meaning and importance of remembering and honoring ancestors. Kids will love the colorful world, charming characters, and catchy songs, while adults will appreciate the deeper themes of family, tradition, and legacy, making Coco a visual and emotional experience for the whole family. The movie also advocates for following your dreams while staying connected to loved ones. Starring Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, and more. Rated PG for thematic elements, such as the afterlife.

A slice-of-life shot in black and white, Roma is a dramatic and semiautobiographical movie set in Mexico City in the early 1970s. The story follows Cleo, an Indigenous live-in maid, working for a middle-class family in the Colonia Roma neighborhood. The story is mostly told through Cleo’s perspective, revealing the mundane and beautiful moments of her daily life, personal struggles, and the sociopolitical turbulence of the era. Early in the movie things take a turn, as Cleo is unexpectedly pregnant and the family she works for begins to suddenly fall apart. Roma is a visually gorgeous, deeply emotional expression of memory, class, and the quiet resilience of women. The movie also won three Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film. Rated R for brief nudity and intimacy, violence, language, and mature themes.

A quirky, upbeat comedy that celebrates Mexican culture through the colorful world of lucha libre wrestling. Jack Black stars as Ignacio, a kindhearted but clumsy cook at a Catholic orphanage who dreams of becoming a luchador to earn money for the kids. Despite his awkwardness, he teams up with scrappy Esqueleto (Héctor Jiménez) to compete in underground wrestling matches, facing o against silly opponents in a series of absurd battles. With its warmhearted underdog story, vibrant costumes, slapstick humor and heart, Nacho Libre is a loving (albeit exaggerated) tribute to Mexico’s wrestling legacy. Starring Jack Black, Héctor Jiménez, Ana de la Reguera, and more. Rated PG for some rough action, mild language, and crude humor.

The Gum That Stole Home

A legendary gum born from the Portland Mavericks

shredded format and flashy, eye-catching packaging, has become a staple item for generations of baseball fans — both on the field and in the stands. What’s even more fascinating is how this gum, which has become synonymous with sports culture, came to be, and how its origins will forever be linked to a unique chapter in Portland’s baseball history.

The Birth of Big League Chew

Few items in the world of sports memorabilia resonate with the nostalgia and unique legacy as Big League Chew. This gum, which has become synonymous with American baseball culture, is a fun, memorable, and distinctly American product. What many people may not know, however, is that this beloved chewing gum traces its roots to Portland’s own baseball history, specifically the scrappy and iconic Portland Mavericks.

Big League Chew, with its signature

The origins of Big League Chew trace back to 1977 and two baseball players — Rob Nelson and Jim Bouton (formerly of the New York Yankees). Also important to the story was 13-year old bat boy Todd Field. At the time, Nelson and Bouton both played for the Portland Mavericks, a minor league baseball team that had been formed just a few years earlier by the colorful and mercurial baseball mogul, Bing Russell. Russell, a former actor best known for his role on the TV show “Bonanza” and father of actor Kurt Russell, became the owner and driving force behind the Mavericks. He envisioned a team that wasn’t about major league glamor, but about providing passionate and eccentric players a chance to play the game in their own unique way. Unlike any other team in baseball, the Portland Mavericks were characterized by their quirky personalities, wild antics, and an underdog spirit that endeared them to Portland fans.

While in the clubhouse one day, Nelson noticed that the batboy Todd Field, who, in an attempt to emulate many of the players who chewed tobacco, had some shredded up black licorice. The idea stuck in his mind, and sometime later Nelson and Bouton were sitting in the dugout discussing the dangers of chewing tobacco, which although popular at the time among ballplayers carried serious health risks. Nelson, with his creative mind and a passion for the game, came up with the idea for shredded bubblegum packed in a pouch, much like chewing tobacco. Nelson recalls saying to Bouton, “You know, if we shredded the bubblegum and put it in a pouch, we could look cool and have some fun with it. We’d look like tough guys, but wouldn’t make ourselves ill.” He and Bouton set about crafting their idea, and in 1977 Big League Chew was born.

The Portland Mavericks Connection

The Portland Mavericks, with their vibrant and offbeat reputation, were the backdrop from which Big League Chew sprung. The Mavericks’ atmosphere of irreverent and good-spirited fun seemed synonymous with the invention of a bold, unconventional concept like Big League Chew. In 1977, Nelson and Bouton were part of a pivotal moment in the Mavericks’ history, as the team had become a

favorite among Portland fans for their unpredictable and entertaining style. As the team’s season progressed, so did the development of Big League Chew. The venture was launched with $10,000 of Bouton’s own money. After experimenting at home in the kitchen, the partners finally were able to convince Amurol Confections, a division of Wrigley, to give Big League Chew a try. Amurol gave them a threeyear deal, thinking the gum would simply be a novelty, but to their surprise the company sold $18 million of gum in

the first year. Big League Chew was off and running and quickly became a fun alternative to chewing tobacco.

Big League Chew’s shredded, pouch-packed design was also a hit as it could be shared between friends and teammates just like real pouches of chewing tobacco. However, the cartoonlike baseball player on the packaging — a caricature originally drawn by Bouton himself, but later rendered professionally by a commercial artist — was intended to appeal to kids from the very start.

A Wild Success

Big League Chew’s journey from a conversation piece in the Portland Mavericks’ dugout to a national sensation is one for the ages. By 1980 the gum could be found in stores across the country and rapidly became a hit with young baseball fans. Its popularity escalated when it became associated with professional baseball players such as Buster Posey and Corey Seager, who loved the gum and chewed it regularly. Over time, the product has become a household name and is enjoyed by millions of people, from little league teams to Major League Baseball players themselves, who enjoy it as an alternative to chewing tobacco.

The Legacy of Big League Chew and the Portland Mavericks

Although the original Portland Mavericks were only active for a brief period — playing in the Class A Northwest League from 1973 to 1977 — their impact on baseball and association with the creation of Big League Chew lives on forever. The Mavericks’ rebellious and inventive spirit helped revolutionize baseball culture — blending sports, fun, marketing, and community in a successful package.

In many ways, Big League Chew embodies the very spirit of the Portland Mavericks: a little rough around the edges, but full of personality and heart. The gum became a piece of Americana, synonymous with the game of baseball but also with the culture of Portland and the city’s zany Mavericks. For those Oregonians who grew up chomping on Big League Chew, there’s a nostalgia that instantly connects to the iconic days of the Portland Mavericks — a team that, for a short while, dazzled us not only with their irreverence and creativity, but their love for the game.

In 2021 the Portland Mavericks returned in a new league and under different ownership. Just like the Portland Mavericks, Big League Chew lives on: two historical icons of baseball born right here in the state of Oregon!
