Carrot Cake Cupcakes
Carrot cake cupcakes are moist, flavorful cakes with rich cream cheese frosting. Share this recipe with your friends and family for Easter!
INGREDIENTS CUPCAKES
1 ¼ C all-purpose flour
1 t baking powder
½ t baking soda
½ t salt
1 t ground cinnamon
¼ t ground nutmeg
2 cups shredded carrots
¾ C granulated sugar
¼ C packed brown sugar
DIRECTIONS
2 large eggs
1 t pure vanilla extract
2/3 C vegetable oil
Optional: Raisins
CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
8 oz cream cheese, softened
¼ C unsalted butter, softened
1 C confectioners’ sugar
½ t pure vanilla extract
1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Line a standard muffin tin with paper liners and set aside. This recipe makes 14 cupcakes.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside.
3. In a bowl, beat together granulated sugar, brown sugar and vegetable oil until combined. Add eggs and vanilla.
4. Slowly add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Stir in the shredded carrots by hand.
5. Fill prepared cupcake liners two-thirds full with batter. Bake cupcakes at 350° F for 20-22 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool cupcakes in pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
6. To make the frosting: In a bowl, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add the vanilla and mix until combined, about 15 seconds. With the mixer on low, slowly add the confectioners’ sugar and mix until incorporated.
7. Transfer frosting to a frosting bag fitted with desired tip. Frost the cooled cupcakes and dust with ground cinnamon as an option. Serve at room temperature.

PET TIPS FOR
APRIL
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
National Pet Day is April 11. How do you celebrate a pet holiday, let alone with your pet? Here are a few ideas to spend some quality time with your furry friends!
GO OUTSIDE
Dog parks probably aren’t a new idea for most dog owners, but this holiday is an excuse to spend a little extra time with your dog. Get some exercise, sunshine (hopefully), meet other dogs and their owners. If you’re feeling adventurous, take your other pets on a walk–cat and chicken leashes exist for a reason!
PET TREATS
This may be an obvious one, but treat your pets! Give them an extra one from the treat bag, look up a recipe for a pet-friendly treat to make at home, or find your local pet bakery which makes non-toxic treats especially for animals.
BATH TIME
For some animals (and children), bath time is the worst thing ever. But if it was up to them, they would never take a bath! Do them a favor and clean them anyway, soften up that fur and make them smell great again. Dogs are simple to bathe, but depending on your cat (not mine), some cats don’t mind baths either. And give them a treat afterward!
PHOTOSHOOT
Whether you hire a pet photographer, or use your own phone and some fun social media filters, doing a pet photoshoot can be pretty cute and hilarious. While some pets are not into posing, some actually love to vogue for the camera! This is another great excuse to get outside and enjoy the spring weather.
GET A TOY
What pet doesn’t love getting a new toy? (Or human for that matter.) Pop into your local pet shop and find a new fun toy for your pet, such as the classic feather and bell wand for your cat, or a squeaky chew toy for your dog. They’ll love to play with you!
DATE NIGHT
This may be a bit alternative, but try taking your dog to the tap room or restaurant with outdoor seating to enjoy some one-on-one time. Maybe a food scrap or two will “accidentally” fall from the plate. Your pup won’t mind cleaning up!
WATCH A MOVIE
A movie, you say? Absolutely! Pets are actually very perceptive, and often my dog and cat will cuddle on the couch and watch what I’m watching with peak curiosity. Find a good pet movie, like Homeward Bound, Beethoven, or Cats & Dogs, or an animated movie like Pets, Aristocats, 100 Dalmatians, or even the classic An American Tail: Fievel Goes West.

On March 4, the Woodburn Fire District honored career and volunteer firefighters at the annual Firefighter Awards Banquet.
This year, fire district members voted to honor Baker & Baker Towing with the Community Partnership award for their continual support of the fire district. Fire Chief Joe Budge stated, “Kevin and the crew from Baker & Baker always provide the highest level of professional service at the scene of motor vehicle accidents. They also support the district by providing salvaged cars that firefighters use to practice auto extrication techniques.”
Engineer Paramedic Jesse Halpern was honored as the 2022 Career Firefighter of the Year. Chief Budge commented that Halpern is a four-year veteran of WFD who “exemplifies the personal character, skills and the physical abilities that embody the very best qualities of a professional firefighter. His unwavering support for both career and volunteer firefighters, continual improvement of firefighting skills and knowledge and his compassionate service to the community are just a few attributes that have earned him a high level of respect from his peers and recognition as the career firefighter of the year.”
In addition to his emergency duties, he is a CPR instructor and the primary paramedic field training officer for new paramedics. He works to ensure the district’s new paramedics are well prepared for life-saving roles and responsibilities.
WFD awarded a Unit Commendation to the firefighting crew that responded to the barn fire that took the life of a St. Paul firefighter in February 2022. Following the explosion that fatally injured the firefighter, the Woodburn crew provided medical care to the down firefighter, set up a landing zone for life-flight, provided a
Firefighter Awards Banquet
water supply for the incident and worked with crews from the surrounding area to bring the fire under control. Woodburn Fire Lt. Jon Koenig, Engineer Paramedic Jesse Halpern, Engineer Alex Weninger, Engineer Jorden Jacobucci and Student Firefighter Jared Redmon received the commendation for their outstanding work as a team in hazardous conditions.
Volunteer Firefighter Ian Niktab received Rookie of the Year. Ian, who joined the district in December 2021, went right to work as a contributing member of WFD. He has assisted on numerous residential fires and other emergency events that have occurred over the past year, including the Vitae Springs wildfire in September 2022. Chief Budge stated, “Without the outstanding contributions made by our Volunteer Firefighters, the Woodburn Fire District would not be able to effectively meet the emergency response demands of the communities that we serve. We are very fortunate to have volunteers like Ian who are willing to serve their community.”
Dale Nelson was named the 2022 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. With more than 43 years of service, Chief Budge referred to Nelson as, “routinely answering the call for duty day or night. Dale can always be counted on to ensure that the district’s air unit is brought to the scene of working fires where he often works
extended hours to operate the firefighter rehab area and fill SCBA bottles for his fellow firefighters working at the scene. [He] continually shows his commitment to the community through selfless service. Firefighter Nelson lives in the community and takes an active role in the fire district’s community functions; continually representing a high level of integrity and professionalism.”
Chief Budge commented, “The awards banquet provides an opportunity to reflect not only on the extraordinary actions of our firefighters during the historic events of the last year, but also the selfless actions taken every day in service to our community. I am humble and proud to work alongside the members of WFD whom I count among the best that I have had the opportunity to serve with during 35 years in the fire service. They show up every day and work hard with humility, compassion and excellence.”
Other members recognized for their outstanding service to WFD and community includes: Volunteer Firefighter Warde Hershberger, Fire Chief’s Award & 60 Years of Service; Volunteer Firefighter Ray Fahey, 50 Years of Service; Volunteer Mark Van Lieu, 40 years of Service; Lt. Jeremy Peil, 20 Years of Service; Engineer Raul Garza, 30 Years of Service.

How to Build the Perfect Raised Garden Bed
Spring is here! The vibrant colors, lush greens, and the fresh fragrance all around us mark the beginning of a new season, a fresh start. It’s that time of the year when gardening enthusiasts can’t wait to get their hands dirty, planting and nurturing new blooms, fruits, and veggies.
As a working mom, time is short so I’m constantly rushing from meeting to meeting. A few years ago we made a rule that when I get in the house from work at 4:00 I’m not allowed to be on my phone and it’s all attention on our boys. Some days I would end up sitting in my car for 30 minutes on the phone with a client. So Dylan and my parents built me some raised garden beds! Now I can plug my headphones in, chat with a client and do a little weeding. It’s a great way to clear my head at the end of the day!
So, what better way to kickstart this joyous time of the year than building a raised garden bed? A DIY project can help you build the perfect garden bed your flowers and veggies deserve. Let’s dive right into it!
The first step is choosing the right location to build your raised garden bed. Find an area that gets 6-8 hours of direct sunlight, is easily accessible, and has good drainage. Choose a flat surface if possible, or if the ground is uneven, consider leveling the area you want to dedicate to your garden bed.
You’ll need a few materials to build your raised garden bed, including untreated lumber, soil, and plants or seeds. Untreated redwood or cedar are
popular choices for building garden beds because they’re durable and naturally resistant to insects and moisture. Make sure you have the right tools and equipment, such as saw, drill, hammer, and screws. I may be biased; but Long Brothers Building Supply is my go to!
It’s time to build the frame of the garden bed. Cut the untreated lumber according to the dimensions you want for the raised garden bed. Typically, a raised bed is 4 feet wide and 8 to 12 feet long. Connect the lumber using screws, making sure the corners are secure.
Soil is the soul of your garden; therefore, preparing the soil is crucial. Remove rocks, weeds, and roots from the area where you want to set up the garden bed. Mix the soil with compost, peat moss, or soil conditioner to improve the soil quality.
Now that you’ve finished building your

raised garden bed and prepared the soil, it’s time to plant! Choose plants that are well-suited to your region and that you enjoy. Be sure to space the plants according to their growing requirements.
Building a raised garden bed is an excellent DIY project that will provide you with a bountiful harvest throughout the growing season. It can be a fun project to do with your kids or family, and it’s perfect for anyone who loves gardening. Remember to choose the right location, materials, and tools to build the frame, prep the soil, and plant your garden. There’s nothing more satisfying than watching your plants grow and flourish with your hard work and dedication. Happy gardening!

Tip:
Don’t forget to place landscape fabric or cardboard at the bottom of the garden bed to prevent weeds from growing.

While instrument repairs have always been a part of Canby Music‘s repertoire, the instrument and music supply store has in recent years established itself as the premier repair shop in the local area with its team of highly experienced, friendly, and professional technicians.
Is there a limit to what the Canby Music repair store can do? Not really.
“In general, everything’s repairable,” repair wizard Nathan Doty explains.
“It just matters how much you want to put into it. We do all kinds of repairs here: dent work, acid cleanings, repads, full overhauls, making things play better than they did when they were new.”
Canby Music’s free repairs and servicing make its rental program a great option for parents and students that aren’t ready to commit to an expensive purchase quite yet. The other great thing about the store’s rental program is that each month’s rent gets credited toward
the final balance of the instrument if the customer does decide to purchase it.
“It’s completely risk-free, for musicians who are just starting out or students who may want to try multiple instruments,” rental fleet manager Lana Szenasi says. The store also offers early pay-off discounts, she adds.
Canby Music owner Brian Haines says he couldn’t be happier with the store’s repair shop and the team that leads it.
“I’m just so happy with Nathan and Lana and the job they have been doing with repairs,” he says. “We get them done quickly, we get them done well, and we hardly ever, if ever, have somebody coming back with a problem after we fixed it. It’s just a top-notch operation.”

IN LIKE A LION
Retired veterinarian Dr. Pat Paradis continues life of care and service in Woodburn
For Dr. Pat Paradis, service and care have always been central to his personal mission.
Born and raised in Woodburn on a dairy farm with eight siblings, Dr. Pat Paradis graduated Woodburn High School in 1972 with the idea of becoming a veterinarian.
Paradis was accepted into Oregon College of Education, now called Western Oregon University. He studied there for two years before attending Oregon State University for four. Out of his 10 applications to vet school, he was admitted to only one, Kansas State University, one of the top veterinary schools in the country. There, he learned the trade, but his
care and animal education started well before then.
Growing up on a dairy farm, Paradis became friends with Dr. Glenn Schwenke, the local vet who would visit the farm and help evaluate the cows. He says he became interested in becoming a vet in large part to Schwenke’s mentorship, as well as Paradis’ love of animals, large and small. A true zoophilist, Paradis says his connection to animals is welldocumented in family albums. “In almost all of my childhood pictures, I am holding an animal,” he recalls.
Schwenke also greatly influenced Paradis as he attempted to get into vet school. His encouragement was a major factor. Even then, the odds

were not good. These days, the current rate of being accepted into a vet school hovers around 10% to 15%. This is partly because there are only 32 vet schools in the country.
After graduating from K-State, Paradis went to work in Southern Oregon for a practice in Lakeview. Subsequently, he worked in Roseburg, also tending to animals at the Wildlife Safari in Roseburg once a week. Paradis explains, “I helped with elephants, kangaroos, wallabies, camels, cheetahs… Just about all the animals they had there.”
Paradis’ next move was back home to Woodburn, where he practiced with longtime vet Dr. Clark Berryman. In 1985, Paradis became a partner in Berryman’s practice, and in 1993, he acquired Berryman’s portion of the business, becoming the sole owner. Seven years later, Paradis moved Woodburn Animal Hospital to its current location on Evergreen Road. After decades of caring for Woodburn’s cats, dogs, and other treasured pets, he retired in 2020, selling his practice to Dr. Elizabeth Nguyen two years prior.
These days, Paradis is focused on family, his wife, children, and grandchildren — all nine of them. He is also an active member of St. Luke Catholic Church’s Knights of Columbus in Woodburn and continues to be a charter member of the Woodburn Lions Club.
According to the website, Lions Clubs International is a nonprofit service organization that is home to more than 1.4 million members. In Woodburn, the chapter is small — eight members to be exact — and encouraging new members to join has been a major challenge. “Young people aren’t exactly thrilled about joining service clubs,” Paradis says, yet he remains hopeful.
One of the greatest service projects of the Lions Club remains vision care. The organization’s focus on sight began when Helen Keller addressed the international convention at Cedar Point, Ohio, in 1925, charging the Lions to become the “Knights of the Blind.” Today, you will find donation boxes around the world, collecting used eyeglasses and sunglasses — they also collect hearing aids and cellular phones. Members like Paradis, take the donations to a larger local chapter that cleans and sorts the donations for those who cannot otherwise afford frames. They also help connect people with eye doctors who can help establish an eyeglass prescription and other services.
“It’s gratifying to help people, you know. [For example}, there was this one young guy, he was about six. One of his eyes was pointed the wrong way, so he couldn’t focus when he was in school. He was incapacitated in terms of his learning ability,” Paradis recalls. The child’s parents, migrant workers, came to the Lions Club seeking help. The Woodburn members helped drive the boy and his family to appointments in Portland, and the boy eventually underwent surgery to correct his line of vision. “Two or three years later, he came into our club and he was like a different person.”
This is one of many stories Paradis has kept in his heart over years. And these stories are the reasons he keeps showing up to Lions Club meetings and encourages others to join the well-established organization. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Woodburn Lions Club, please contact Pat Paradis at 503-930-5803.

Ron Nevison Legendary
Music Producer and Sound Engineer
By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
With a career spanning nearly 5 decades, he is one of the most distinguished record producers/audio engineers to ever spin the knobs. And he lives right here in the Pacific Northwest!
From a young age, Ron Nevison had an innate fascination with both music and electronics, a fortuitous combination he would soon learn. He was the kid in school who had his nose perpetually buried between the pages of Popular Electronics and was constantly frequenting Radio Shack for parts to build radios. While he initially sang in the school choir and a variety of doo-wop bands, hoping to break into the business as a performer, his first gig was with Festival Group Sound, traveling with bands on tour, driving truck, hauling gear, etc. Recognized for his strong work ethic, organizational skills, and extensive knowledge of electronics, however, he was quickly moved over to the arena of sound mixing where his strengths could be better utilized.
Over the course of just a few years, Ron earned a reputation for being one of the prominent “sound men” in the business, making some of the biggest acts of the time (Jefferson Airplane, Traffic, and Derek and the Dominos) sound absolutely incredible live. That said, while he was in high demand, his ultimate goal was to work in the studio. An auspicious meeting
with Chris Blackwell, founding owner of Island Records, secured an opportunity for him, and a month later Ron was living in London. His first job as a sound engineer was working on The Who’s seminal double album, “Quadrophenia”. It was a massive undertaking: a year-long project that required extensive use of sound effects (which all had to be collected manually at the time) and a trial-by-fire learning experience for Ron. But it was one of the most memorable of his career. Ron stated that Pete Townsend was a brilliant and generous man, and a real mentor for the fledgling engineer.
Over the next 4 decades, Ron earned his place among the upper echelon of recording engineers and producers by working with some of music’s most popular acts while putting out some of their best-selling albums. Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Rolling Stones, Heart, Chicago, Meat Loaf, Ozzy Osbourne, KISS, Europe; the list goes on and on. Highlights of his career include many of the record industry’s highest distinctions, including being recognized by Billboard Magazine as one of their “Top-5 Producers of the Year” four separate times, garnering countless Grammynominated and winning hit singles and albums, and producing a host of Multi-Platinum and Gold-selling albums.
And he’s still at it! These days Ron can still be hired to produce and engineer albums through SoundBetter, the world’s leading music production marketplace. Interested in working with one of the all-time greats for your next musical project? Hop on SoundBetter.com and check out Ron’s profile. He’s local. He’s one of the coolest, most low-key, easy-going guys you’ll ever meet, and he has a track record that’s hard to beat!

BILL BIXBY The INCREDIBLE HULK & MORE
By David Grove, Contributing Writer
Although actor Bill Bixby certainly played many different types of characters throughout his nearly 32-year television acting career, the essential Bill Bixby television persona is that of an everyman who makes the fantastical seem plausible.
Bill’s career breakthrough in Hollywood came in 1962 when he landed a starring role in the science-fiction television sitcom “My Favorite Martian,” which aired on CBS between 1963 and 1966 over three seasons. In “My Favorite Martian,” Bill plays Tim O’Hara, an eager young newspaper reporter who, in the show’s pilot episode, discovers a crashed spaceship and its Martian pilot, a Mars-based anthropologist played by Ray Walston. “Growing up in the 1960s, I was a big fan of “My Favorite Martian,” and a lot of the show’s appeal, for me, had to do with the impact that Bill made as an everyman,” says magician David Copperfield. “We dreamed, and experienced a sense of awe and wonder, through Bill’s eyes. As an actor, Bill was the man who experienced, and observed, crazy and impossible things. He was relatable. Bill played us.”
In the NBC television series “The Magician,” which aired between 1973 and 1974 for one season, Bill plays Anthony (Tony) Blake, a famous jet-setting stage illusionist who uses his performing skills to solve crimes. Bill himself
was a competent amateur magician. “I think that Bill was underrated as a performer, both as an actor and as a magician,” says Copperfield, who appeared alongside Bill in Copperfield’s 1979 CBS television special, “The Magic of David Copperfield II,” which Bill hosted. “I think that Bill was better than most, if not all, actors who performed magic on television. Bill was cool. He very much acted like, and certainly looked like, a real magician. Again, I found Bill to be so believable and relatable. With “The Magician,” I believed that Bill, playing a magician, knew what he was doing.”
Of course Bill is best remembered–largely due to the proliferation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe–for the Marvel Comics-based television series “The Incredible Hulk,” which aired on CBS between 1977 and 1982 over five seasons.
In “The Incredible Hulk,” Bill plays Dr. David Banner, a brilliant scientist who becomes a fugitive after a cell-altering process causes him to transform into the show’s titular monstrous green being, played by Lou Ferrigno, whenever Banner experiences great anger or stress. “[Bill] was my first, and only, choice for David Banner,” said Kenneth Johnson, the show’s creator and executive producer. “The network [was] very happy that I convinced Bill to come aboard. He was just terrific as David Banner.”
HISTORY
34 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Following the end of the series, Bill and Ferrigno reprised their roles from the series in the 1988 NBC made-fortelevision film “The Incredible Hulk Returns,” followed by the films “The Trial of the Incredible Hulk” (1989) and “The Death of the Incredible Hulk,” both of which were directed by Bill. “Bill took me under his wing and taught me a lot,” said Ferrigno. “He was the first star [whom] I ever met. Bill was very genuine, quick, witty. I remember being so proud when Bill said to me: ‘Your character has connected with the public.’”
Born and raised in the bustling city of San Francisco, California, actor Bill Bixby, best remembered for the television series “The Incredible Hulk,” nonetheless discovered and fell in love with the outdoor lifestyle at an early age.
Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Bill spent many summers vacationing with his parents in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, specifically within the range’s Cisco Grove region, where Bill’s mother’s family owned an acreage
compound. Between 1955 and 1957, Bill spent much of his summers working as a bellhop and fledgling entertainment organizer at the Jackson Lake Lodge in remote northwestern Wyoming.
In July 1971, as a wedding present to his first wife, actress Brenda Benet, Bill purchased 110 acres of land alongside the beautiful McKenzie River in Lane County, Oregon. Bill’s ranch, which was known as the Hidden Valley Ranch, served as his primary vacation home and sanctuary throughout the rest of his career and life.
Whenever Bill visited Oregon, he stayed at the property’s main house, which could accommodate four people and offered a clear view of the surrounding McKenzie River Valley. Off to the west, there was Finn Creek, which ran behind the property’s barn and slaughter house.
To manage the property, the land and ranch, Bill selected his beloved maternal aunt, Ellen Hayes, who lived in Oregon until her death in 1997, and her husband, Ernest Hayes, who died in Oregon in 1986. “They [Ellen and Ernest] did a fair job of buying and registering cattle and maintaining the buildings and land,” said Ellen’s son, John Schubert, who died in June 2022. “Financially, the ranch wasn’t profitable, self-sufficient, nor would I say that it was a money pit. Bill loved the ranch. He needed someone to manage the ranch, and he was very happy with how [Ernest] and Mom took care of the property while Bill was in California.”
Diagnosed with cancer, Bill made his last visit to the beautiful Hidden Valley Ranch in Oregon, where he celebrated Christmas with family, including his Aunt Ellen and mother Jane. Bill died on November 21, 1993, in California, at the age of 59.

Bungalow Theatre offers cool event space
By Angie Helvey, Contributing Writer
Cinema was a big part of Woodburn’s past. Bungalow Theatre, attached to Woodburn Museum in historic downtown, is one of three theatres historically operated in the city, besides the Cozy and the Pix. Operating from 1911 to 1952, Bungalow Theatre is now a historic landmark used to celebrate the history of cinema and as a hub for community activity, and it includes many of the original fixtures and oldtime movie memorabilia.
Gene Stoller, longtime Woodburn resident and former editor at the Woodburn Independent, had a huge passion for film and was a projectionist for the Bungalow Theatre. He was instrumental in the repurchasing of the building by the founders of the Woodburn Museum and donated the original projector and other artifacts for display. The Bungalow is filled with the history of cinema in Woodburn. “We have the sign from the Pix Theatre in the lobby and chairs from the Cozy. So even though the theatre is being used as an active living space for presentations, demonstrations, music, and films, it also has the history of the past theatres of Woodburn,” explains Robert Weatherby, Woodburn Museum Librarian.
The Bungalow Theatre is a fantastic place to hold events. They hope to have a full calendar as they continue to build community partnerships. The theatre and the library plan
to offer seasonal and other special events presenting movies and plays for public viewing. Robert also hopes to provide live music in the future. The 35-seat space is available for rentals and has (or is) planned to be utilized by various community organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, the Chamber of Commerce Greeters, Chemeketa Community College, and the Woodburn School District.
“Utilizing the theatre as a tool to help us hold onto our history,” says Jesse Cuomo, Community Services Director with the City of Woodburn. “In our world, history can get lost very quickly when we’re always looking to the future and what’s next. Sharing these things with the community and presenting them in an educational and bite-size way creates a really enjoyable experience for folks.”
The Friends of the Bungalow Theatre and its volunteers were instrumental in providing support to the theatre and the Woodburn Museum. Key members included: Bonnie Depriest, Dagmar Kinne, Nancy Kirksey, Judy Marquez, Julie Moore, and Cindy Thomas. Bungalow Theatre and Woodburn Museum both received grants from Oregon Heritage for updates and restoration, and much of the momentum comes from the support of volunteers. “Their energy and kept things going, kept it viable and relevant, especially before the remodel began,” Robert says. Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming community events at the Bungalow Theatre. It’s the perfect place to soak up the rich cinematic history in Woodburn, socialize with family and friends, and enjoy the entertainment put on by this beloved community. The Museum also implemented “try it tables,” great for kids and families. Visitors can participate in hands-on exhibits, such as using stamps to make prints or writing a postcard to mail to family. Most impressively, the Museum will soon feature the fossilized bones of a nine-foot-tall, 13,000-year-old Bison antiquus. The city of Woodburn has an interesting and dynamic history. Forever a farming community, it was founded by Jesse H. Settlemier in 1889. The Woodburn Museum resides in a building erected in 1894. Located in historic downtown Woodburn, the site was previously utilized as retail space (i.e. furniture, hardware, and grocery stores). The Woodburn Museum was founded in 1986 when a group of community volunteers wanted to create a space to celebrate and preserve the history of their beloved city. Some key volunteers were: Lou Jane Cornwell, Red Eaden, Kathy Figley (Mayor 2002–2018), Paul Graham, Nevin Holly, Nancy Kirksey (Mayor 1986–1990), Ed Murphy, Tom Pantle, Paul Serres, Hazel Smith, Gene Stoller, Gail Wengenroth, and Vance Yoder. The building has been undergoing significant physical and exhibit content improvements since 2017, with the help of volunteer groups and grants awarded by the state. Visit this newly-updated treasure filled with all things historical Woodburn!
The exhibits at the Woodburn Museum range from an extensive collection of historical photos and artifacts to interactive activity tables. The exhibit content was updated in the recent improvements. Jesse Cuomo, Community Services Director with the City of Woodburn, was very involved in the project. “It was a process selecting those Woodburn-centric items, whether it was the Woodburn Teratornis, the specific prehistoric bird found here, the diverse culture we have with
Jesse is excited to share the newlyimproved Museum with the Woodburn community and its visitors. “It’s important for visitors to learn about Woodburn and how it’s this unique gem in the Willamette Valley. We want to share the history of why we’re different, the beauty of our diversity, and the amazing updates done in our downtown. We are one of the fastest growing communities in the state right now, and things are always evolving, but we are still able to hold onto our uniqueness and culture.”
You can visit the Woodburn Museum on Thursdays and Fridays, between 1 and 4 p.m. or contact Robert Weatherby, the Museum Librarian, to schedule a tour or special visit. “We are constantly working on updating and improving, so I am happy to not only show you what we have but to listen and get feedback,” says Robert. “If you visit, don’t be shy about sharing your thoughts. We are here to support the Woodburn community and maintain a space to celebrate our diverse and unique history.” To rent the space, please contact Emily Duran at (503) 982-5239.

By Colton Womack, Contributing Writer
Oregon is a state best known for its scenic landscape, and with it comes a thorough experience of the four seasons. It’s important to be able to enjoy the outdoors no matter the weather, and better yet if it’s from the comfort of your own patio – whether it be a family get-together, a barbecue, or simply a private retreat. This was a need felt strongly by the good people at Crown Patio Covers, a business locally owned by a husband and wife team born and raised in Oregon.
They graduated from Oregon State University in 2004. With a passion for business ownership, and wanting to have a positive impact on their local community, the patio cover business was a perfect fit. It also gave them the opportunity to show their two kids, ages 8 and 10, what it looks like to work hard and meet the needs of others. They built an all-star team from the best people in the industry, made up of folks with up to 15 years of experience, and sought to fill a niche that wasn’t being served in their community: high quality, affordable patio covers to expand outdoor living spaces.
What separates Crown Patio Covers is their culture and the quality of their products. Offering services from North Salem all the way up to Vancouver, they cover the wider Portland Metro area. Using aluminum framing, double-layered acrylic paneling, and with a hefty snow load, these patio covers won’t yellow, brittle or break –unlike the poly-carbonate of their competitors! With complete UV protection, and a variety of transparency options, the customer is able to tailor how much light comes through so they can enjoy the beauty of the open sky while still having shelter.
A design consultant will also advise customers on their services and options, even helping to develop custom designs to match their needs. With clear communication and reliable installation, they’ve made sure the process of purchasing with them is a breeze. It’s this customer-first approach that allows Crown Patio Covers to help people spend more time with friends and family in the backyard, and have fewer rainy days spoil the fun!

Building Hope in Canby
Essential community group to triple capacity
support and opportunities to grow in personal responsibility, families move toward a brighter future, step by step.
At The Canby Center, families can find wraparound services that bring stability in difficult times: food and clothing, a monthly dental van, and no-cost lunches served four days a week. An array of adult life-skills classes, such as basic finance, home buying, and sewing, focus on strengthening dignity and assisting individuals to grow in personal responsibility. Innovative programs like Reading Mentors, which pairs elementary students with a caring adult for one-on-one reading time each week, and Strengthening Relationship classes for kids and their families exist to build a healthy community, one person at a time.
And now, TCC is expanding. The scope of TCC’s work has outgrown its current facility. Staff and volunteers reset the building several times each day to accommodate core programs. Several staff members work in portable office
By Steve Nelson, Director of Development
Last week, 140 families came to The Canby Center to shop for essential food at the weekly no-cost Harvest Share food distribution. For families experiencing economic hardships in Canby, shopping for produce, dairy, proteins, and pantry staples not only meets a tangible need, it shares hope.
The Canby Center (TCC) mission, “In God’s love, we renew dignity and inspire learning for youth and families,” is the heartbeat of all the center’s services and programs. Creating an environment of encouragement, acceptance, and tangible help, TCC is effective in empowering youth and families out of poverty. This doesn’t happen overnight, but with relational
space, and food storage has overflowed to refrigerated Conex containers in the backyard. As Ray Keen, executive director, for TCC shares, “We are out of space and running out of time.”
The Canby Center is in the home stretch of a capital campaign to raise $8 million to expand their facilities and programs. This expansion, which has been strategically planned over several years, will triple TCC’s capacity on their current property. Campaign fundraising is more than 90% complete, with $7.2 million committed by the generous support of Canby neighbors, churches, service organizations, and businesses, as well as regional foundations and the State of Oregon.
With a goal to complete fundraising this spring, The Canby Center is asking the Canby community to help them cross the finish line. The Canby Center is a place where neighbors help neighbors for the good of everyone. Would you give today to build hope in Canby and beyond?

PAINT THE TOWN
Find the perfect paint for your next project at Long Bros.
One of the easiest ways to refresh your space is to change the color of your walls, indoors or out. From white to blue, red to gray, or beige to green. No matter the color, Long Bros. can help you choose it, mix it and educate you on the type of paint that is best for your project.
At Long Bros., you’ll find ACE Contractor Pro interior and exterior paints, Royal interior and exterior, Clark & Kensington interior and exterior, as well as Magnolia interior. For most of these brands, you have several choices of sheen finishes including flat, eggshell, satin and semi-gloss.
Sheen refers to the amount of light that the paint reflects from its surface. Flat paint has no sheen and is often used on ceilings in homes. The
field-marking paint, camouflage, fluorescent, metallic, appliance epoxy, rust-stop, a variety of primers, highheat, automotive, chalkboard, and even Magnolia spray paint.
While fewer shades exist within the Magnolia brand, the TV show-inspired line offers the highly popular chalkstyle paint in trendy colors with charming names — Ella Rose, Rainy Days, and Vine-Ripened Tomato, to name a few.
• Built-in magnetic brush holder
• Ergonomic handle that lessens hand fatigue when painting
• Holds up to a pint of paint or stain
• Solvent-resistant, works with any paint or stain
• Disposable for quick clean-up
most common sheen of paint used on walls in homes is eggshell or satin. For homes with kiddos or animals running around, we recommend using a satin paint. This sheen allows for the ability to wipe down walls to keep them clean and tidy. Higher sheen paints, such as semi-gloss paint, are often used on banisters and baseboards for ease of cleaning.
The store also has a large spray paint wall with many different varieties, including more than 100 solid colors, hammered,
Color matching services are available if you have an old can of paint that you don’t have the color name for anymore, or if you need assistance matching a previous color. We can also assist in matching color swatches from our new chip rack to your pillowcases, shams and even different home décor! Long Bros. also has all the paint supplies you’ll need to get the job done. Find drop cloths, plastic tarps, tape, paint trays, rollers, brushes, extension poles, ladders, and more.
One more thing: Don’t forget the swatch selection. Come in and peruse the possibilities — color, brand, finish — today at Long Bros.
