Stephanie Baker has a unique blend of creativity and media expertise, with a career that spans advertising, journalism and even comedy. Raised in McMinnville, Stephanie earned a B.A. in Mass Communication from Linfield University and began her career as a promotions assistant at KYTE radio in Portland. Known for her love of writing, Stephanie’s essays have been published in Newsweek, HuffPost and The Oregonian. But perhaps her most interesting claim to fame is that she once sold two jokes to Joan Rivers in the 1980s — a fun and unexpected chapter in her story. When she’s not working in advertising or writing, Stephanie spends time with her cockapoo, Darby O’Dog. With a flair for humor and a knack for storytelling, she continues to bring creativity to everything she does, from crafting compelling advertisements to sharing her own stories.
Q What does your business do? What makes it unique?
Active Media publishes more than 50 different direct-mail magazines throughout the Portland and Vancouver metro areas, Salem, and Polk and Yamhill counties. Our magazines profile local businesses and people in addition to containing advertising.
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
I stay motivated because I love to sell. I love convincing people that advertising will help their business. I sold the most Campfire Girls cookies in 1973 and won a David Cassidy poster. I was bitten by the sales bug when I was 11 and in the fifth grade.
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
I am proud of maintaining my integrity as a salesperson. I will not sell something I don’t believe will help the client.
Q What is your advice for young women in business?
The best advice I can give young women is to grow in your career and to continue to learn new skills to keep yourself marketable. Also, believe in yourself and know your worth. Don’t get taken advantage of by doing work without being compensated for it.
Q How would you describe your perfect day off?
My perfect day off is sleeping until noon, meeting a friend for coffee, and then browsing in thrift shops or walking my dog on a beautiful sunny day.
Q What is at the top of your bucket list?
To write a comedy book based on my life entitled “The Last Single Campfire Girl” and see how far I get marketing it.

Before she was crafting beautiful smiles, Dr. Angela Toy of Arbor Hills Dental was mastering the art of kung fu — literally! Raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, she learned martial arts from her father and even helped him run a martial arts school. But her true passion led her down a different path, starting with a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota and later a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Dr. Toy’s first career was a research and development chemist for biomedical companies, but her love for hands-on patient care drew her into dentistry. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, where she earned a Fellowship award, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. In her spare time, she attends continuing education courses and enjoys running, hiking, cooking, binge-watching cooking shows and cultivating indoor plants, especially orchids. She loves spending time with her husband and their Labradoodles, Sam and Max.
Q What does your business do?
Arbor Hills Dental is a comprehensive dental practice that leverages new
901 N. Brutscher Street, Ste. G, Newberg 503-538-2143 www.newbergdentist.com
technology to optimize patient care. Going to the dentist is not on anyone’s favorite list, so I strive to make visits non-judgemental, educational and as comfortable as possible. I offer sedation options for patients with dental anxiety or who have extensive needs requiring longer appointments. I spend many hours getting additional training so I can provide specialty services such as oral surgeries and orthodontics; this reduces the need for external referrals.
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
I love learning. Every day of running a practice and a business offers new opportunities to learn something new. My patients and employees have privileged me with their trust. Because of that, I am motivated to improve my skills as a clinician, a leader and an employer so that I can offer them the best version of me.
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
I took over a practice and am proud to have transformed it into my own brand. I’ve worked hard to create a great environment not only for my patients but also for my employees. I believe in taking good care of my staff because they will in turn take good care of my patients.
Q What is your advice for young women in business?
Find a mentor for open, honest questions. Starting out can feel isolating, and negativity is inevitable. Focus on constructive feedback, not the noise.
Loni Parrish, owner of Art Elements Gallery, has dedicated her career to the art world. Born and raised in Newberg, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oregon State University and has spent her life running art galleries and creating art. Loni is deeply involved in her community, serving on the boards of the Newberg Downtown Association and Newberg Public Art Council, while also playing a key role in the Chehalem Cultural Center since its inception. Her contributions have earned her numerous awards from the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce, including Volunteer of the Year, the Beautification Award, Small Business of the Year and, alongside her husband Scott, the honor of 2025 Citizens of the Year. Outside of her professional life, Loni enjoys horseback riding, art, gardening and travel. She shares her life with her husband, two daughters and their spouses, plus two amazing grandchildren — also two horses, cats and a dog.
My gallery specializes in bringing professional artworks created by Oregon artists to people. I am a sales gallery but that is not my main reason for having a brick-and-mortar business. I want my community to enjoy the art in my gallery by visiting us. Art is a critical part
604 E. First Street, Newberg 503-487-6141 www.artelementsgallery.com
of living a full and rounded life. I hope to help provide that to my community.
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
My staff and the artists I work with keep me motivated. Also, collaboration with designers, business owners and artists on new projects in their spaces really gets me excited. I also love having someone come in off the street and having them make comments on how they filled their heart with the art in the gallery.
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
I am in my 15th year at the gallery and am very proud that we have stayed open and are continuing into the future with more art and new relationships. I have also loved mentoring my team and learning important lessons from each of them, too.
Q What is your advice for young women in business?
Hang in there. It isn’t easy or everyone would be doing it! Learn by your mistakes and take responsibility for them while continuing to learn and grow.
Q How would you describe your perfect day off?
I love being in nature, whether painting, reading or hiking, riding my horses and hanging out with my grandkids.
Q What is at the top of your bucket list?
To see the Northern Lights, New Zealand and Paris with Rita!
Emily Yensen is the director of marketing and sales at Balsall Creek. She has lived in various places around the world, including England, Belgium, Austria and California. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a minor in Film Studies from the University of Redlands. After a decade of learning sales through fundraising and residential real estate, Emily took the lead as Marketing and Sales Director at Balsall Creek. She is an active member of Women in Wine and the Multnomah Athletic Club, as well as a longtime member of the Junior League, where she has dedicated hundreds of volunteer hours to its mission. Emily and her husband, Zac, have two young children, Archer and Holly, and a beloved yellow Labrador named Millie. While free time is rare, she enjoys spending it with loved ones — whether through community involvement, hosting social gatherings, or escaping into a great book or TV drama.
QWhat does your business do? What makes it unique?
Balsall Creek is a family-owned and -operated business that makes and sells 100% estate-grown wines. On our 20-acre vineyard we grow six varietals from which we make eight different types of wines, giving customers a premier offering and
unique tasting experience. In our tasting room, we have three standard tasting flights — red, white and mixed — and each includes at least four varietals. Our family is at the core of the business, not just in us working together, but also to honor my great-great-great-great grandparents, who homesteaded mere miles from what is now Balsall Creek in 1850 — before Oregon was a state!
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
Honestly, it’s fun! I am a full-time stay-at-home mom of two toddlers, and working for a family business means there is a lot of flexibility to include my children, which makes working tangible. It’s also revitalizing to use and engage my “adult brain,” I very much look forward to all the work I do, even when it’s often at 8 p.m.
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
From hiking the property as the buyer’s agent nine months pregnant with my firstborn, to building the brand from scratch, to launching the business and now managing brand growth with two toddlers, my professional journey has been unique, and I’m proud of it all!
Q What is your advice for young women in business?
Connect with women, join committees and get on a board. Women’s groups offer mentorship, career support, volunteering and invaluable skills — I found all this in Junior League at 22.

Laura is actively involved in her community, volunteering with A Family Place and the Chehalem Valley Rotary. Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?

Q What is your advice for young women in business?
Prioritize people, build strong relationships and show respect. Stay focused, work hard and persevere through challenges.

Tiffany Meyer is the agency manager at Chris Browne Insurance, and licensed in both Life and Health Insurance. A lifelong Oregonian, she was born and raised in McMinnville. She began her college education at Oregon State University before earning a bachelor’s degree in Business and Psychology from Eastern Oregon University. Before transitioning into the insurance industry, Tiffany owned and operated a highly rated in-home preschool, the only five-star high-quality in-home preschool in Yamhill County until her career change of 2022. Since then, she has earned multiple awards for her work in Individual and Medicare Insurance enrollments. She is an active member of the McMinnville Area Chamber of Commerce and has contributed to her community by volunteering within local school systems and at sporting events. Tiffany is a dedicated mother to her two sons, Carter and Tanner, and shares her home with an Alaskan Klee Kai named Aro and a cat named Pumpkin. In her free time, she enjoys traveling — especially to Disneyland — reading and listening to live music. Interestingly, she comes from a family deeply rooted in the insurance industry, with both her parents and two of her three brothers having worked in the field.
Q What does your business do? What makes it unique?
As a life and health insurance agency, we have the opportunity to build relationships
with clients and offer guidance through the entire decision-making process. Quality agents are your advocate, and we focus on understanding each client’s unique needs. Because we represent a variety of insurance companies, we are loyal to the client and not a specific plan. We take pride in having an empathetic team with strong communication skills that feel very passionately about helping clients feel confident with their choice.
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
Chris Browne Insurance has facilitated an uplifting and positive environment while creating an amazing balance between personal life and work — natural motivation! I would have to say though that the clients are my No. 1 motivator. I love building meaningful relationships by helping people navigate something that can often be so confusing.
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
I am proud to be a strong female example for my children, earning two degrees while starting a family, building a top-rated small business and then taking the risk of a career change to quickly become a successful agent and manager within the insurance industry.
Q What is your advice for young women in business?
Believe in yourself, take risks, remain confident and build a network of amazing people to support you!

It is important to me to create wealth for myself but also for anyone who wants to change their life in less traditional ways.

Q What does your business do? What makes it unique?
My national business and the financial industry are unique because the client drives the bus, but I read the map.
Working in tandem helps us avoid wrecks. Despite different perceptions and expectations, our arrival is almost always better than expected. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
Working with companies of high integrity that are wonderful resources and seeing what conversation can and does create for the client, the company and me. My career in business is an adventure!
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
I am proud of the relationships I build with clients and companies.
Q What is your advice for young women in business?
If you choose to be an owner, no one can fire you and there is no glass ceiling when you lean on God.
Q How would you describe your perfect day off?
I don’t take days off. I take brief vacations for minutes and hours; then it is back to creating and serving 24/7, unless I am resting, doing tasks, exercising or listening, listening, listening. Every day is a new day thanks to God.
Q What is at the top of your bucket list?
To help as many people as I can in any way that I can without hurting myself.
Since growing up in Michigan, Zing Studio owner Rachel Hadiashar has lived in Ohio, California and Massachusetts. With an undergraduate degree studying Music, a master’s degree in Theology and the Arts — and a love of smart people drawing her to working at MIT in Cambridge — Rachel’s curiosity has always driven her to look for the spark in people’s eyes. Rachel is a member of the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Beaverton Class of 2025, the Washington County Art Alliance, and the photographer in residence for Resonance Ensemble and the Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival. She was nominated for Business Leader of the Year with the Sherwood Chamber and won Rookie of the Year in 2024. With three spunky kids and a brilliant husband, Rachel splits her time between running the photography studio and getting kids to art class and soccer practice, and coaching them through sibling rivalry.
QWhat does your business do? What makes it unique?
I have been photographing creative Oregonians for more than a decade and currently offer portrait sessions at my studio in Sherwood and on location with organizations throughout the Portland Metro area. My client list includes notable

artists, musicians, authors and thought leaders, in addition to organizations and companies who are doing good in the community. What sets my business apart is the amount of time and care I give to people. I am curious about my clients and find out more about who they are and how they shine in the world. This is no minisession situation; a photo session with me is a cue to be playful and irreverent, and an invitation to share your power with the world through beautiful finished images.
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
I can’t advertise that the right photo can be life-changing — because even though anecdotally that is the end result of working with a great photographer, YMMV — your mileage may vary. I never want to overpromise. Hearing client after client tell me how they were finally “seen” through better portraiture is my motivation.
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
Last year, I had a goal to be featured in a magazine. Not only was my work on SEVEN covers, but my clients were published in national publications, including Downbeat Magazine, The Strad, Governing Magazine and Psychology Today — and now I’m in this local one, too! I’m proud this intention was realized in such an abundant manner. In 2025, my aim is to photograph people who are aligned with excellence rather than privilege.

As a business development representative for Active Media Publishing and the Women in Business magazines, Debbie Dille helped bring this feature to life! Raised in Prineville, she’s lived in many places, including London, where she earned the final piece of her Bachelor of Science degree in journalism. Now married to her husband, Dan Baltus, Debbie has two sons from a previous marriage, Joshua and Jake, both in their 30s, and two granddaughters. She has volunteered with HomePlate Youth Services and enjoys playing piano and singing, attending book club gatherings and hiking — when she can get away.
QWhat does your business do? What makes it unique?
I’ve worked as a private contractor for several businesses over the last few years. Before the pandemic, I was the business manager for Pint-Sized Productions, handling event booth sales, prize procurement and client services. During COVID, I began working for Alluvial Beverage and Vertical Wine & Beer (now ECB Selections), selling to restaurants, pubs and retailers. I still do this, in addition to my most recent position as a business development rep for Active Media.
Q What keeps you motivated in your career/business?
I like working with people, and though I do wish to semi-retire soon to begin traveling
with my husband, I would also like to stay busy and active with a profession.
Q What are you most proud of professionally?
In the early 2000s, when Trader Publications, a national chain of magazines, suddenly discontinued Metro Parent Magazine, the editor and her husband immediately purchased the office equipment and took control of business operations. I was one of two marketing reps who assumed all of the advertising sales, boosted the total revenue and kept things running without missing a beat. The next month’s issue came out right on schedule, and we displayed more advertising in the pages than we’d had in the six months prior, as our clients were so supportive and excited about the new management.
Q What is your advice for young women in business?
I still struggle to focus on progress rather than perfection. Sales can challenge morale and confidence, so managing time well—especially from home—is crucial. Prioritizing daily tasks leads to success, even if it takes time.
Q How would you describe your perfect day off?
Sleeping in until 7 a.m. and then sitting in my hot tub with a mocha, while feeding the neighborhood crows that fly over for a visit. I also like long walks with my husband and scenic drives in wine country.
