Tweezing, Shaving, and Waxing

So what’s the difference between tweezing and waxing? Well tweezing uses a tweezer to remove a single hair at a time, and the skin is left intact. With waxing you remove many hairs all at once.

1. If you shave your legs, face, or any hair on your body it will grow back more and thicker.

False! Shaving does not change hair growth. It may feel

like it’s thicker once it grows back, but that is because the hair was cut and is blunt and you can feel it more, versus pulling the hair all the way out with tweezing or waxing and having it grow back tapered and finer at the ends.

2. If you wax hair on your body including your lip and face, it will grow back more or thicker.

False!

Waxing, like tweezing, removes the hair at the root. Sometimes by doing this it also damages the hair follicle and the hair never grows back. Remember the 90s and over-plucked brows that never grew back? So if anything, waxing will actually make your hair grow back less over time.

As an Esthetician who specializes in eyebrow waxing, I’ve been asked those two questions hundreds of times.

Shaving will last, as you probably know, just a couple of days at best, whereas waxing or tweezing will last up to a month.

Waxing can be done with hard or soft wax. Hard wax does not adhere to the skin and is better for sensitive areas such as the bikini area. Soft wax uses a cloth to adhere to then is pulled off, pulling the hairs with it. Soft wax is used for areas like eyebrows, face, or larger areas like legs. With traditional soft wax the skin may not be left intact, as it may (depending on the type of wax) adhere to the skin as well. Hello exfoliation (and sometimes way too much if you know what I mean)! This is also why clients using products or medications that thin the skin should not receive waxing treatments.

Nowadays with all the advancements in the beauty industry, there are soft wax products that also don’t adhere to the skin, which is the best of both worlds. The product I personally use on clients is called NuFree. So next time you want those unwanted hairs gone, remember you have options!

King’s Farm To Table CANBY MARKET

ooking for a holiday feast or party spread fit for a king?

Look no further than King’s Farm To Table, the newest and most delicious addition to downtown Canby’s business community. King’s started as a micro-farm and farmstand located on Stafford Road in Wilsonville, but has reinvented itself in Canby as a specialty grocery market and scratch deli offering chef-prepared, locally sourced and inventive foods – with a little something for everyone. This holiday season they are offering chef-prepared Thanksgiving and Holiday Delites To-Go. “What I really hope that we’re able to do is be all things to all people,” explains head chef Bill King, who owns the store with his wife Jennifer. “We want to do a lot of the down home comfort food, but then on the flip side have some things that are a little fancier, pretty interesting and more sophisticated.”

The deli offers a wide variety of prepared foods, from familiar staples like meatloaf, fried chicken, potato salad, and macaroni and cheese, to more adventurous and exotic dishes like pork

loin with apricot glaze, edamame salad with mint, and roast chicken with a basil-chili vinaigrette. “Really bouncing across the spectrum between your more traditional foods and a more contemporary and creative approach” is how Bill sums it all up.

A big focus at the new storefront will be King’s famous handcrafted barbecue, which samples the best regional techniques from across the United States. “Every day we’ll have Texas brisket, western Carolina-style pulled pork, and Tennessee baby back ribs,” Bill says. “We’ll also be doing barbecue chicken with a rotating variety of seasonal fruit barbecue sauces and flavors.”

In addition to King’s chef-prepared dishes, the store features a wide variety of locally sourced, high quality products and grocery items, including craft jams, jellies and applesauce, gourmet meat sticks, hot sauce, pickles, canned produce, potato chips and snacks, syrup, dried fruit, and other condiments.

“We try to keep most everything local,” Bill says. “We’re about

85 to 90% local, so that’s the first thing we need to check off.

And then it’s just really about quality. I mean, if I taste something and it’s delicious, then I want it in the store. I think that’s the simplest way to put it.”

While King’s upscale culinary offerings would not seem out of place on any street corner in metro Seattle or downtown Portland, the decor and atmosphere at King’s Farm to Table offers a distinctly rural feel, with country-themed art and farm-style furnishings and tables. “I kind of view this as country-store-meets-urban-market,” Bill says. “We wanted to have a little bit of a country vibe here.”

King’s Farm To Table partnered with more than a dozen local farms and producers when it was a simple farm stand on Stafford Road, and Bill says that will continue with the move into Canby. Some of the growers Bill has worked with include Martinez Family Farm and South Barlow Berries in Canby, Blonde Girl Honey in Dayton, Boring Goats in (you guessed it) Boring, The Country Egg in Sandy, Howard Calcagno Farms in Aurora and Jack Siri Produce in Oregon City.

King’s Farm To Table offers a wide array of chef-prepared foods to go, along with a well-stocked marketplace of excellent foodstuffs. They do not currently offer dine-in service.

Wilsonville-based Dental Foundation of Oregon Provides Charitable Care to Kids in Every Corner of the State Article Written by Erin E. Kane

T

he Dental Foundation of Oregon (DFO) is the charitable arm of the Oregon Dental Association, headquartered at SW Sun Place across from the Ferrari dealership and the Oregon School Activities Association.

The DFO’s mission is to advance oral health education, provide charitable care, and coordinate resources for vulnerable children and communities. It realizes this mission via its signature program, the Tooth Taxi – a 38 ft, state-ofthe-art dental clinic on wheels, and Oregon’s ONLY mobile dental unit singularly devoted to delivering FREE pediatric dental care and oral health education.

Every school year, the Tooth Taxi crisscrosses Oregon, partnering with local schools and nonprofit organizations, to deliver comprehensive dental care and oral health education to under- and uninsured children.

In a typical year (things have been anything but typical lately due to the pandemic!), the Tooth Taxi serves more

than 3,000 children via 40-45 schools and nonprofits in all corners of the state – from the Willamette Valley and up and down the I-5 corridor to coastal communities, like Seaside and Tillamook. And, weather permitting, it travels over the pass to Redmond and east on I-84 to La Grande. Since 2008, the Tooth Taxi has delivered $8.2M worth of free dental care and smiles to Oregon’s neediest children.

In Oregon, Childhood Dental Disease is Persistent

It’s easy to overlook the importance of dental care. Who among us hasn’t avoided making an appointment with their dental provider? But a small delay here or a little avoidance there does not compare to a lifetime of little to no access to dental care. The difference between a routine cleaning versus caring for a mouth full of decay is 3-6 hours of dental care, multiple appointments across days, weeks or months, and thousands of dollars worth of care.

increased risk for gum disease, permanent tooth loss, and bacterial strains of diseases like pneumonia. They also may suffer from sleep loss, speech impediments, and school absenteeism.

According to The Oregon Community Foundation, childhood dental disease is persistent and deeply rooted in this state; and the greatest risk factor for childhood dental disease is poverty. In other words, Wilsonville’s own Tooth Taxi is an essential dental health provider caring for the most vulnerable kids in Oregon.

Dental offices are abundant in Wilsonville and West Linn, but for rural communities or densely populated areas with high poverty pockets, dental care can be difficult to access. Barriers may be geographic in nature, such as lack of access to reliable transportation or no dental provider within a 30 to 60-mile radius. A less understood barrier is that of insurance status. Oregon children have access to dental coverage through the Oregon Health Plan, but there is a dearth of providers who accept this form of insurance, and children often must wait 3-6 months for an appointment despite having urgent needs. In other words, insurance status doesn’t equate to access to care.

A Model that Works

The success of the Tooth Taxi is rooted in deep and lasting partnerships with schools and nonprofits, experts in outreach, engagement, and service to vulnerable children and families.

Success is also possible because of the passionate and licensed provider team aboard the mobile unit, including a dentist and two technicians. They spend up to five days at each school or nonprofit site, delivering a range of comprehensive dental care from screenings and cleanings to fillings and extractions. The Tooth Taxi is on the road year-round.

Finally, success is also the result of the Tooth Taxi’s public/private partnership with MODA Health

and Delta Dental, OEA Choice Trust, and individual foundations and donors throughout Oregon. Since its launch in 2008, they have provided financial support and in-kind services on an annual basis.

The impact of the Tooth Taxi can be measured in distance it’s traveled - over 86,000 miles, which is more than three times the circumference of the earth - and in the services it has provided: • 24,230 students have received oral health screenings • 13,788 students have received dental appointments (preventive and restorative) • 25,014 students have received classroom-based oral hygiene education • 516 schools and nonprofit organizations were visited by the Tooth Taxi

But perhaps a more important measure of our impact is the display of bravery and grateful smiles of the children who come aboard the Tooth Taxi. The provider team 14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2021

relays stories again and again of kids who are resilient, funny, and determined to smile on!

Looking Ahead

This past year, in addition to the challenges brought on by the pandemic, the Tooth Taxi experienced an uptick in equipment failure and mechanical breakdowns – it is over 13 years old! And thanks to current and past members of the DFO Board of Directors, a retirement party for the Tooth Taxi is imminent. In November 2020, the Dental Foundation of Oregon’s Board of Directors voted to put a new Tooth Taxi – Tooth Taxi 2.0 – into production. The DFO is excited to be working with two local companies – ADI and A-dec – to manufacture and outfit its Tooth Taxi 2.0. Oregon will soon have a brand new mobile dental unit traveling the state in service to vulnerable children and families!

An Exemplary Partner: Community Transitional School

The Community Transitional School (CTS) is located in NE Portland and provides children from homeless and transient families a safe and supportive environment for learning and personal growth. They foster in every child the belief that they can succeed, and then they teach them how to.

After 31 years, they do this exceptionally well. Every child who comes to CTS quickly discovers it is a place where their situation does not define them.

When you walk through the doors of CTS, the first thing you notice is the vibrant, colorful artwork and inspirational quotes covering the walls from floor to ceiling. Student poems are also displayed throughout the building, as poetry has proven to be a great vehicle to help students to discover and share their feelings. And during recess, the yard out back is bustling with the frenetic energy of childhood as the kids take a break from their classwork. It’s like any other school, except it is distinctly and uniquely different.

For example, at CTS 50% of students move at least once during the school year – while some move as many as 8-10 times – so the school provides door-to-door transportation for children living in shelters, camps, hotels, apartments, or a friend or family member’s home. Breakfast and lunch are also provided, as children cannot learn and grow on an empty stomach.

It’s hard not to wonder about and want to remedy the circumstances of these children’s lives. However, at CTS they try to refrain from doing that. They focus on what they do best – providing an exceptional and safe learning environment where every child can experience success.

Even in their longstanding partnerships they are focused on school success. Children can’t reach their potential in the classroom if they have a toothache or poor eyesight, so CTS partners with the Dental Foundation of Oregon and Pacific University for dental and vision services. Principal Cheryl Bickle noted that students rarely complain of dental pain, but when you look in their mouths the decay is so severe you can see down to their roots and gums. Bickle states, “Our school has been fortunate to receive twice-yearly visits from the Tooth Taxi. There hasn’t been a time when the students don’t look forward to seeing the Tooth Taxi pull into our school parking lot. The Tooth Taxi is one of the best programs in Oregon providing direct and needed care to children living in poverty.”

Pumpkin Bread Pudding November is the time for all things pumpkin! Pumpkin Pie is the traditional go-to this time of year, but if you want to shake things up and get a little non-traditional, Pumpkin Bread Pudding is a scrumptious way to do it. It makes a great Thanksgiving dessert, but you can make it anytime the pumpkin cravings strike. If you want even more delicious pumpkin flavor, try using a loaf of pumpkin bread in place of regular bread. Delicious!

INGREDIENTS

1 1/4 C milk 1/4 C brown sugar 1/4 C maple syrup 4 eggs 15-oz can pumpkin (or just under 2 cups fresh pumpkin puree)

1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cardamom 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 pound artisan bread loaf, or challah, cubed

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, brown sugar, maple syrup, eggs, pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, and salt until well blended.

2. Add bread and stir carefully to combine, making sure there are no dry pieces remaining.

3. Lightly coat an 8x8 square baking dish with nonstick spray.

Pour the bread into the dish, arranging evenly in the pan.

Pour any leftover custard over the top.

4. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, or in the refrigerator overnight.

5. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F. Remove plastic wrap and bake for 35-40 minutes.

Janell Berryman

Memories and Fantasy Become a Polymer Clay Reality

J

anell Berryman launched her art career when she was 8 years old and won her first award. She’s the creator of Pumpkinseeds Folk Art Originals, a vast collection of “wacky” clay sculptures that look like they crawled out of a dream.

Janell works in painting, collage art, and ceramics, but found her calling in polymer character art. She was no doubt inspired by her time working for Enesco Giftware Co. and Dept. 56, companies known for their cute gift-wares, and she’s been featured on That’s Clever! on HGTV and QVC. Sculpting her artwork for 30 years, Janell starts with a sketch. She then “creates an armature for the desired artwork, then builds [it] up with [polymer] clay.” After baking she “paints each one with multiple layers of acrylic paint and finishes pieces off with a stain beeswax finish.” While mostly animals, monsters, or humanoids, her sculptures range widely from dioramas, devils, yetis, clowns, and the occasional “pretty girl robot” or “radish man.”

Janell also creates holiday sculptures for Easter, Cinco de Mayo, July 4th, Halloween, Christmas, and more. She creates collages, paintings, and mixed media pieces, too.

While every piece is unique, her style carries throughout: deeply inventive, wondrous, and funny.

What does her work aim to say? “I believe my work touches on memories from our past. From love vs. pain, healing and happiness. I love to mix in holidays with my past experiences to create unique, intriguing characters.”

When asked about inspiration, Janell said “my inspiration in the late 90s was originally from Tim Burton’s characters and my love of the holidays… Now I find inspiration in so many things. From antique or worn out items, old postcard images or beach [finds].” What art trends does she follow? “Color plays a big part in trends. Especially now with this farmhouse theme we see out there. I’ve touched on making pieces mostly white to fit decor. A few years back steampunk style was huge. I pulled out my box of metal parts and incorporated those into some fun robots.”

Behind all the quirky clay and fantastical characters, Janell is a down-to-earth person: “What I’d like people to know about me and my work is that it’s from my heart and soul. I believe each of us is artistic in some way. I’ve gathered up all the years of life’s bumps and bruises and turned them into wacky creations. It’s a great and silly way to express myself. I’m lucky in so many ways.

Art really does heal.”

FIND READING FOR RAINY DAYS

The Book Nook

O

n the corner of Grant and Northwest 2nd Avenue in downtown Canby, a world of all things books, games, and gifts can be found inside The Book Nook, a locally owned and operated bookstore. The store has gone through several moves and expansions since it opened four years ago, but its existence began as a literal “nook,” just a few shelves tucked into the corner of an existing business. The cash register was located in what owner Megan Waterman still laughingly refers to as “my Harry Potter closet under the stairs.”

But if the shop started out as the Book 1 version of Harry — cute, small and full of potential — The Book Nook’s current digs would more resemble Harry from Book 5 — confidently training fellow wizards to confront evil forces from their secret base in the Room of Requirement. The Book Nook leveled up to the larger and more prominent space in February from a mere suite.

“It was a weird time to grow into a larger space, but our customers have really rallied to keep us going and growing during this past year with the pandemic and shutdowns,” Megan says. “We live in a really amazing [area] of readers. We’re so blessed with all of our customers.”

She was delighted to bring retail shopping back to the building many residents still remember as the former Parsons pharmacy and gift shop. And that’s not all they’ve returned to the location;

“We had actually purchased some of the old Parsons counters from the new building owners. So it was really fun to bring them home.”

The new location not only offers the expansion of the store’s new books, games, art supplies, and children’s department, it also features two large windows to show off products and the imaginative displays assembled by employee Kayla DeShazer.

“Everything that we hoped would happen with the move has happened,” Megan says. “We’ve been able to expand our new book offerings, and our gifts have really grown in the space. Customers tell us we’re just a lot more visible and easier to find. We’re not the bookstore hiding on the back of the building anymore.”

The Book Nook has also greatly evolved from its early days of buying and selling used books. That’s still a part of its business — used books in good shape can be traded for store credit and used for up to 50% of the purchase price of another used book — but sales of new books across genres have exploded in recent years. “Over the last few years, we’ve been ordering more and more new books for our customers,” Megan explains. “That part of the store has just grown and grown, which is really exciting.”

She estimates that the store carries over 8,000 new and used book titles, with the ability to order any in-print

book to the store for free.

Their nerdy and literarythemed gifts, mugs and apparel have also been very popular, and the store offers art supplies and journals for folks interested in exploring and telling their own stories.

Tabletop games are the most recent addition to their retail list, and they’re “just another way to experience a story,” says Megan. “The one thing that we always try to keep in mind as we add new things to the store is that there are all different ways to experience and celebrate stories.”

For Megan, it all comes down to helping customers find the one thing they need, whether it’s the hot new title from a bestselling author or something one-of-a-kind, like a family Bible from the 1800s. “We had a customer that was moving

and just wanted it to go to a good home,” she recalls. “It was this huge, beautiful Bible with the big metal clasps. And it was lovely, but I didn’t know who I could sell it to. Well the very next week, someone came in and just fell in love with it. She was restoring an old farmhouse and said it was just the piece she needed. It’s so fun to see the vintage pieces go from one home to another.”

The Book Nook hosts regular game nights where locals play Dungeons & Dragons and other games at 294 NW 2nd Ave in Canby. The store is pet-friendly and extremely active on social media. THE RAIN IS COMING DOWN BUT THE MARKET REMAINS UP

T

his will not come as a surprise to anyone following our monthly articles courtesy of Beltran Properties Group at eXp Realty, but the real estate market is still hot, hot, hot! Even as we head into fall and winter, a time of year that traditionally sees a significant slowdown in the market, things are still moving at a fast and furious rate. Vin Diesel couldn’t keep up with this market! These are unprecedented times that we are living in, folks, and if you have any inclination to buy or sell a home, there has never been a better time!

So why do things typically slow down this time of year? According to Jaimy and Sherine Beltran there are multiple reasons, but the main factor seems to be the weather. Moving is difficult

enough as it is, so if it’s a choice, people generally choose against moving in inclement weather. In the Northwest we obviously see a lot of rain during this time of year, and as tenacious as we tend to be, nobody wants to move in the rain. Other reasons are that people don’t like to displace their children during the school year, and they don’t like to be juggling all of the requisite logistics associated with buying and selling a home during the holidays.

That said, these are unprecedented times, and in 2021, consistently low inventory has kept prices high. We have literally been sitting on one month or less of available inventory since January. That means hypothetically imagining that no new houses would be placed on the market and no new

construction would be added, the Portland Metropolitan area would run out of available housing in one month (or less). That’s just a statistic used by agents, but it’s one that demonstrates the current status of the market quite clearly. Demand remains high while supply remains exceptionally low!

By way of comparison, in 2019, we hovered between 2 and 3 months of inventory, almost triple the amount!

So for sellers, now is the time to put your house on the market. If you’ve been considering it, don’t hesitate any longer!.Chances are good that conditions will never be better.

As we’ve all heard, COVID has knocked out the supply chain and adversely affected the availability of products and services across the board from

A to Z. The construction industry is no exception. New developments are being delayed indefinitely while waiting on supplies. So without the competition from all of that new construction, putting your home on the market now will likely fetch you a higher asking price and a quicker sale than at any other time.

On the flip side, interest rates have remained low which has made it a fantastic time to buy as well. If you look back over the last 50 years (prior to the Subprime Mortgage Crisis in 2008), interest rates ranged from 6-16% and you could expect to pay for your home 2-3 times over by the time it was all said and done.
