Meet Zoe Mombert Wilsonville citizen focuses on community

O

Upon her 2007 graduation, she worked as an assistant planner in Sherwood for five years. She bought her first home in 2010 and also enrolled at Portland State while working full time, completing her masters in Public Administration in 2012.

In search of a new challenge and job, she moved to Jerome, Idaho. “It was one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had,” she said. She worked as a Community Development Director and Public Information Officer, focusing mainly on economic development and planning. In 2014, missing her family and Oregon, particularly the water, “my happy place,” she returned home and worked nearly five more years as a Management Analyst in community development in Tualatin.

However, finding it mostly internally focused, she realized she wanted to help make change working directly with the public.

After moving to Wilsonville in 2015, Zoe valued the thoughtfully planned community, parks and local amenities.

In 2018, she took the position of Assistant to the City Manager,

Webster defines it as “an apparently effortless absorption of ideas, feelings, attitudes, etc.” In the case of Zoe Mombert, the incredibly capable and endlessly busy Assistant to the City Manager of Wilsonville, she keeps numerous committees and projects spinning along successfully throughout every day.

Zoe was born and raised in Tigard by a family deeply engaged and dedicated to public service. Her father is a lawyer and served as City Manager for Tigard. Her mother worked in the HR department for Clackamas County and then for Portland Community College. Within that warm family circle, Zoe was happily fed a sense of deep commitment to the importance of local governance along with her pablum.

The oldest of two girls, Zoe, a good student, spent time volunteering, first at the local library and then for the Peer Court, a diversion program for youth that also taught youngsters how the judicial system worked. Zoe spent her junior year as a Rotary Exchange student in France. “[The experience] opened my eyes to different cultures, amazing people and places outside of the United States. I give the program a lot of credit in shaping who I became.”

Zoe enrolled at the University of Oregon thinking she might study law, but she soon realized Planning, Public & Policies Management was the right path. “Local government was where I wanted to be.” Since she had no idea what the job market would be like and wanted to “make a positive impact in some way,” she minored in Business Administration to cover her bases.

and discovered how much she appreciated both the organization and the folks who work for the city who really cared about the community. She then took over organizing the Citizen’s Academy and the Community Enhancement Committee.

More recently, she took on the Tourism Program and created the Civics 2.0 Program, a project that allows a deep dive into civics-related topics as well as acting as liaison for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, a new program that elevates historically marginalized communities and works to make everyone feel welcome in Wilsonville.

Zoe married in 2021 and is now the proud mother of a baby boy. She acknowledges happily that seeing the community through the eyes of a parent has provided her the opportunity to discover an entirely new world and acquire a fresh perspective on a changing world.

With a multi-talented person like Zoe helping to manage so many essential aspects of our city, we are indeed fortunate to have someone with her talent, enthusiasm and stamina involved in keeping all the plates up in the air.

Here are five New Year’s Complexion Resolutions that you’ll surely love and hopefully adopt to get that glow of healthy skin.  Cleanse your skin morning and night, consistently. Want to make a big improvement in your skin?

Cleanse it with an appropriate cleanser for your skin type, morning and night. If you aren’t already doing this, it should be at the top of your complexion resolutions. It’s incredible how this simple step can change your skin for the better. Don’t like cleansing your face? I suggest finding a fancy face wash that makes you feel like a queen when you use it, or buy a cute headband to use only when you wash your face, making the practice feel more fun. ivine Complexions Beauty Medspa has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Owner Christine Lewy was eight months pregnant with her second son when she began seeing clients at her house in the evenings after her husband returned from work. Four more sons and a decade later, Christine’s passion and hard work have transformed Divine Complexions into Oregon’s premier beauty med spa and she is proud to be celebrating ten amazing years!

Christine has the inside scoop on building a successful business, and it doesn’t come without taking risks. “The biggest milestone there, in the beginning, was being absolutely terrified and using all our family savings to start this extremely humble spa room,” she reflects. Her clientele quickly grew, and she expanded to a studio and then a bigger space with two rooms a year later. Christine took another huge leap in 2020, right at the height of the pandemic, and settled Divine Complexions in its current spacious, luxurious suite conveniently located near Costco and Target.

Using her extensive background and expertise in the beauty industry, Christine has worked tirelessly to create the dream

spa she’s always envisioned and to develop her team. “I realized I couldn’t do it alone, and I didn’t want to,” Christine says. “I’ve mentored new estheticians, helped them grow, and taught them what’s worked for me.” Divine Complexions continued to grow with the addition of Christine’s mom, Tina, as a nurse injector.

“I started out doing makeup application, facials, eyelashes, and waxing, but once we added the medical side, it allowed us to offer all the spa services you could possibly want, including Botox and fillers.”

Divine Complexions credits its success, quite simply, to its clients. “That’s what’s so special about this place. We’ve built an incredible following of people, and they are the reason we’re celebrating 10 years,” says Christine. “They’ve helped build it with their support, their loyalty and referrals.”

“My staff are very talented, but they’re also incredibly caring and kind. We are so passionate about what we get to do, and the love for our jobs creates this excitement that’s tangible when you visit.”

Besides being a beauty guru and spa boss, Christine is a wife and also a mother to six boys. Growing her family alongside the business has taught her children lessons she didn’t expect.

he remarkable nonprofit, Elijah’s Heart House, was founded by Kimmee Auxier and her husband, Jeff, after the tragic loss of their youngest son, Elijah, to restrictive cardiomyopathy on Sept. 3, 2017 at age 16. The family will be forever imprinted by the six-week ordeal that began with rushing Elijah to Seattle for urgent help by Life Flight with no idea where they could stay to be near their son in the hospital.

Left with a hole in their hearts, Kimmee and Jeff and their three other children chose to use Elijah’s death and their own experience of being dislocated away from home as an impetus to funnel their indescribable grief into the creation of something positive to help others. Their inspiration, fashioned on the Ronald McDonald model of support, was to create a nonprofit that would provide a “safe harbor” for families needing to be near a hospital or medical center where their gravely ill child was receiving treatment.

To begin, Kimmee and Jeff set aside one of their private homes and turned it into the refuge that is known today as Elijah’s Heart House (EHH). Their mission was simple and generous: the families that would be chosen to stay would not be limited to those with children just dealing with heart issues, but rather would include parents of children with other serious diagnoses such as cancer. Families are invited to stay at no cost for as little as a weekend or as long as a month, whatever the

need, including just needing to “take a break” for a few days from their current ordeal.

In addition, the chosen families receive three specific gifts: a bag of swag when they arrive that might include gift cards worth as much as $1,500; if the family needs to travel to a more distant location for medical treatment, the bill for their stay at a B&B or hotel is covered by EHH; and finally, participants are welcome to come to EHH and stay for a quiet, private respite, somewhat like a mini-vacation.

All decisions at EHH are made by the Auxier family board with every choice discussed by all before a decision is made. They’re very proud that they’ve never had to turn anyone away. Their ultimate goal is to establish EHH all over the country, an appeal directed, as Kimmee succinctly put it, “to anyone who owns a property and has a beating heart.”

The organization has one annual fundraising event, so mark your calendars for Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. This specific date is deliberate because the event is always held on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day. An open house, the event will take place at EHH & Barn located at 15668 N.E. Eilers Road, Aurora, 3 to 7 p.m.

Attendance is $25, children are welcome and the attire is casual. There will be a silent auction, a tour of the house, great music, including a performance by Olivia Harms, and a nohost bar along with complimentary spreads of yummy foods.

EHH swag will be available for purchase, miniature donkeys serving water will be there, along with ducks, pigs and goats that can be fed. There also will be a s’mores bar, tea bar, hot chocolate bar and coffee bar, with vendors like Half Pint Bros., Shaker & Feb. 10, 3 to 7 pm Salt, Tamale Boy, Good News BBQ, Sprig & Spread, Gather + 15668 N.E. Eilers Give and Archer Vineyards.

Road, Aurora As of December 2023, EHH has raised $125,000. Along with some sizable donations, much of that impressive total has come from small donors giving as little as $1. Seeking a balanced, comprehensive approach to transportation funding The Wilsonville Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to fostering economic prosperity in the south metro region. We are deeply invested in the well-being of both our businesses and every individual who works within our community. The current proposed tolling program by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is not just about business freight mobility issues; but also directly affects the daily lives of our workforce, influencing their commute, job satisfaction, and ultimately their livelihood. Recognizing the need for effective and sustainable transportation funding, we also understand the importance of ensuring that any new initiatives, such as tolling, are equitable and beneficial for all members of our community, including the diverse range of businesses we represent and every individual who contributes to our region’s economic vitality.

We understand that the current reliance on gas tax revenue is insufficient and support the exploration of alternative funding mechanisms.

However, we have significant concerns regarding the Oregon Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) reliance on tolling. Our concerns are: • Focus on Revenue over Congestion Relief: The primary objective mandated by Oregon House Bill 2017, was to alleviate congestion. Unfortunately, the current focus of ODOT’s proposal appears to be predominantly on revenue generation rather than effectively addressing traffic congestion. This shift in focus is a departure from the bill’s original intent and raises concerns about the proposal’s alignment with community needs.

• Traffic Diversion and Safety Concerns: Citizens along with local and county government have raised serious concerns that the tolling on I-5 and I-205 will lead to substantial traffic diversion onto local roads. This diversion poses significant safety and environmental risks to our local cities and neighborhoods. Despite ODOT’s and the Joint Transporation Committee’s ongoing work since 2017, the lack of a clear solution to this critical issue is troubling. Proceeding forward with a tolling plan without adequately addressing local traffic diversion solutions (versus under review and study) is not acceptable.

• Disproportional Impact not equitable: Tolling that implements in only a limited region of the Portland metropolitan region stands to disproportionately, and negatively impact business growth and viability in the limited region that is tolled. As the south metro region invests in infrastructure for future commercial and industrial development, in places such as Day Road in Wilsonville, tolling stands to put the south metro region at a competitive disadvantage and jeopardizes a return on investment into infrastructure.

Additionally, we urge for more transparency and scrutiny regarding the financial aspects of the tolling program. It is essential to understand the cost-effectiveness of the program, especially in terms of administrative expenses versus the actual funds allocated for maintenance and construction of roadways.

In light of these concerns, we have for the past year advocated for a pause in the current tolling proposal. We are very disheartened that despite the Governor’s request for a pause it has not had any meaningful change in direction for ODOT and the Joint Transportation Committee’s full steam ahead with what is still a flawed tolling program.

Therefore, in light of this pause not being taken seriously, we find it advisable to recommend the support of measure IP-4:Vote Before Tolls in order to safeguard business, workers and community interests.

We call for a collaborative effort to develop a more equitable and comprehensive transportation plan that genuinely addresses congestion relief, ensures safety, and is financially transparent and efficient.

We stand ready today to engage in constructive dialogue with ODOT, local and state officials, and other stakeholders to find a balanced and effective solution for our transportation system’s funding and management.

THE MOUNT HOOD AERIAL SKIWAY

Bus Ride Among the Clouds Unique ’50s tram loses its ticket to ride

or many of us the idea of a flying car is enchanting.

The notion of a bus trekking through the clouds, however, takes the concept to a whole different level.

While the Mount Hood Aerial Skiway didn’t actually fly (the tram was named “Skiway” instead of “Skyway” due to copyright issues), it did at times travel through the clouds, providing passengers with the sensation of being conveyed up the mountain in a flying bus. The venture didn’t last long, but for Oregon skiers in the 1950s this unique tram offered an unforgettable journey up Mount Hood.

On October 24, 1947, in the wake of World War II, two men, Dr. Otto J. George and A.L. Greenwalt created the Mount Hood Aerial Transportation Company. The founders envisioned a stateof-the-art aerial tramway that connected Government Camp to Timberline Lodge. In contrast to the lightweight chair lifts of today, the idea was to modify two city buses — each powered by two 185-horsepower gasoline engines — that, by transferring power from the drive wheels to the 1.5 inch diameter traction cable above,

could claw their way up and down the mountain. The concept was based upon technology employed in the logging industry at the time. The interior of the buses were outfitted with streetcar-style seats that could be flipped about to enable passengers to always be facing forward. Each bus could hold a maximum of 36 people, and cost $40,000 to customize in this manner, as compared to a regular city bus which only cost $16,500.

As you can imagine, constructing a tram of this type was a costly and laborious process. After building the lower terminal building — which housed a restaurant and snack bar — near Government Camp, a path had to be cut all the way up to the west side of Timberline Lodge. For this daunting task the company hired Volley Reed, previously of the U.S. Forest Service, to direct two cutting crews which were to start at opposite ends of the route and meet in the middle. The process commenced in 1948, but shortly thereafter it was discovered that the two crews were not, in fact, cutting a straight line, and the strategy had to be altered. Once the cutting crews finished their task, 38 steel towers were erected to support the 3.2 miles of cable required to connect Timberline Lodge to the lower terminal building.

On January 2, 1951, the Skiway tram was finally ready to commence operation. Despite significant snowfall at the time, skiers made their way up to the mountain and the trams were full to capacity for their inaugural run. To much media fanfare, the buses completed their first run, scaling slowly but steadily on the uphill sections, and sliding rapidly on the downhill parts. Although the Skiway tram did indeed operate as designed, successfully transporting skiers up and down the mountain, the venture proved unprofitable due to a

number of factors. Bill Keil, a Timberline Lodge Publicity Director during the 1950s recalled, “the tramway crippled its way through five years of marginal operation before suspending,” in 1956.

One of the problems was the poor mechanical design of the buses themselves. Not only were the buses slow and loud — so loud that passengers couldn’t easily converse while in transit — they were also terrifying. It required a stout heart to endure the precarious nature of the ride itself. When one considers that a city bus full to capacity weighs approximately 15-20 tons, the idea of it suspended high in the air on cables moving up and down the mountainside is a harrowing thought. The sheer weight dragging down on the cables would cause the buses to sag as they traveled from one support tower to the next. A member of the company’s board, George Rausch, expressed concern about the passenger experience on the tram. “I’ve ridden the tramway,” he stated. “I’ve listened to the

shrieks, and taken the jolts over those, what you call them — the saddles, and I’ve heard what people say.”

In addition to the less than ideal engineering and physics of the trams, not to mention the frightful nature of the journey itself, the economics of the operation were dismal. Due to the enormous weight of the buses, it took 25 minutes for it to crawl its way up the mountain, resulting in a bus taking one hour to complete a roundtrip. As a full to capacity bus only held 36 people, the revenue generated per day could not keep pace with the expenses of the venture.

Despite the aforementioned problems, it’s possible that changes could have been implemented to salvage the company’s future. Unfortunately for the Skiway tram, at about the same time as the tram began operating, improvements were made to the highway leading up to Timberline, thus eliminating the very reason for the tram in the first place. In addition to direct access by road to Timberline Lodge,

there were also shuttle buses that charged less money than the tram for transport between the two locations.

From 1956 through 1958 the board met numerous times in an attempt to save the company. Different proposals were considered, including replacing the buses with smaller, traditional gondola-style cars. In the end, the skiing conditions between Timberline Lodge and the lower terminal were deemed too poor to warrant investment in a traditional-style lift system. By the end of 1960, Mount Hood Aerial Transportation company had been liquidated.

On your next trip up the mountain, linger for a moment at the Thunderhead Lodge in Government Camp, the former lower terminal building of the Skiway tram. This lone building is all that remains of this ambitious, imaginative, but ultimately doomed venture. For Oregonian skiers in the 1950s, a bus ride through the clouds was a unique and unforgettable experience!

1. Paint — the easiest, quickest, and most cost-effective way to transform a dull or outdated space is to apply a fresh coat of paint. Over time, walls can acquire scrapes and scratches; they can become dirty, and those paint colors that were once considered fashionable can become downright embarrassing.

It’s amazing what a difference a little spackle and fresh paint (neutral colors only!) can make.

2. Lighting — like some paint colors, lighting fixtures can go in and out of style. Replacing old fixtures with new ones or even adding additional fixtures can imbue living spaces with much needed warmth and a more inviting atmosphere.

3. Refinish cabinets — the kitchen is a focal point of most modern homes, and outdated cabinetry can be a real eyesore.

Replacing cabinets is very expensive, but for a fraction of that cost, you can have them refinished or refaced to provide a fresh look.

4. DIY backsplash — kitchen remodels are sometimes a necessity

depending on the age of your home, but they can be costprohibitive. If your kitchen isn’t too outdated, one relatively inexpensive way to add a little flourish is to put in a tasteful backsplash. They are fairly easy to install and can make a big “splash” in your kitchen’s appearance.

5. Upgrade faucets — faucets can get old and tarnished and,

6. Upgrade hardware — replacing old hinges, handles, and

knobs on doors, drawers, and cabinetry (particularly in bathrooms and kitchens) is a nice way to give your home a more modern and uniform look with little investment.

7. Low-cost flooring — vinyl or laminate flooring are fantastic alternatives to their more expensive counterparts. Not only are those options a fraction of the cost, they mimic those richer materials so closely as to make them almost indistinguishable.

They are also easier to install and maintain (and, in comparison to tile, more comfortable to walk on).

8. Upgrade to a “Smart Thermostat” — the more energyefficient your home the better, and investing in a “Smart Thermostat” can provide significant savings over time.

9. Curb Appeal — nobody wants their home to stand out in a

negative way from the rest of the neighborhood. Exterior paint weathers and dulls over time. A fresh coat of exterior paint (like interior paint) can really make your home shine. Alternatively, if the paint is in decent shape, a good power washing may be all

you need to clean things up. Making sure your lawn is wellmaintained and your landscaping is tastefully manicured is also fairly easy provided you stay on top of it.

10. Declutter — we’ve all heard the term “feng shui” and

understand, at least conceptually, the need for harmony and balance in our living spaces. Unfortunately, we live in a capitalist society that impresses upon us at every turn that “he who dies with the most toys wins.” As a result, we collect things, and over time our homes become stuffed with clutter. If moving about your home causes anxiety, consider decluttering! Donate or sell things you haven’t used in the last year. Particularly when selling a home, you will want to make sure that the rooms feel open, spacious, well-organized, and depersonalized. Potential buyers want to imagine themselves living in that space, and that is difficult to do with your photos there.
