f you don’t have time to read this article — spoiler alert — it’s worth it. I believe feeling “divine” includes your smile.

Since COVID and the subsequent non-stop video chatting, I really got a sense for how much my teeth and bite have changed.

Application — Invisalign is not like traditional braces, but attachment pieces are applied to a few of your teeth for the Invisalign to work and stay put. You’ll get a number of trays and learn when to change them.

Results — Impressive. It’s wild to think how a plastic liner over time can create a perfect smile, but it does! I wore them for a year and a half, but in my mind, a year was going to go by regardless.

So if you’ve been wondering about Invisalign, I say do it! I’m happy I did! I can take photos and videos confidently knowing my smile is perfect now. I can confidently recommend Senestraro Family Orthodonitcs, too.

Not sure when, or if, you’d ever use it again? Sunbelt Rentals is just the place to go for all your general equipment needs. Local DIY homeowners, handyman professionals and local contractors can turn to Sunbelt Rentals’ new Wilsonville branch, conveniently located just off I-5 on SW Ridder Road. Come by and check out the warehouse or go online at sunbeltrentals.com and set your location to get you started!

Wilsonville’s Sunbelt Rentals serves residential and commercial customers alike. They carry everything from hand tools such as drills and saws to forklifts and large aerial equipment, “and just about everything in between,” says branch manager Joe Butler. “We pride ourselves on being available to everyone, whether a homeowner, a business or a construction company,” he relates. “We can walk them through the entire process, start to finish.”

Customers are welcome to tour the warehouse and the outdoor storage lot with an equipment specialist. Tutorials are available for various types of equipment and sometimes a specialist will provide training. As a general rule, equipment is readily available, due to the strong network of sister locations all across Oregon. Tualatin, for example, has a specialty branch just for aerial equipment with lifts going as high as 185 feet. Other branches warehouse specialty equipment for climate control, flooring, trench safety and industrial tools.

great amount of flexibility.

“We leave it up to the customer to take as much time as they need,” says the Wilsonville manager.

Delivery, pick up and will-call are available for customer convenience.

For the homeowner or small business owner that might have a specialty need, Sunbelt also has trailers available to rent, which can be picked up or delivered. “Whatever makes sense to the customer,” says Joe, “we make that happen.”

Employees at Wilsonville Sunbelt Rentals are local to the area and knowledgeable individuals. As leader of the branch, manager Joe Butler found that Sunbelt Rentals company-culture aligns well with his own. Having been in the rental industry for 19 years, Joe moved to Wilsonville to expand the branch, which was originally located in Hubbard.

Trash to Treasure Journey of hard work and business leadership

W

hen we wheel our trash bins to the curb, we rarely think much about it. For Jason Jordan, General Manager of Republic Services, it’s a complicated and layered leadership responsibility involving more than 230 employees and servicing more than 65,000 customers every day of the year.

Jason was born and raised in Colorado Springs to parents who met on the flight deck at Peterson Air Force Base. A good student and athlete, Jason loved books and football and track.

He was also intrigued with student government. “I was a shy kid until my freshman year when a special teacher, Ms. Peggy Ouellett, with whom I’m still in touch, encouraged me to run for student office.” Jason took her advice and was elected School President in his senior year. That led to a Summer Leadership Camp, an experience that helped him clarify his principles and values and realize that he wanted to lead and serve others.

Jason attended Washington State University where he completed dual majors in Business Administration and Human Resources. Jason confided, “those college years were some of the most formative years of my life.” First, it was where and when he met his wife, who was majoring in Communications. Second, he was to become a first-generation college graduate. Third, he accepted the responsibility of taking care of his family.

Later, Jason found a vision of the life he wanted, working four different jobs — a sorority houseboy, a Coliseum janitor, a vet research assistant and an HR intern for a local engineering company — at the same time while attending classes. Working through the summer months, Jason graduated in three and a half years.

Continuing his passion, he entered the Leadership Training Program at Cintas and moved up the corporate ladder over the next nine years. Married, with his wife working in HR at Boeing, Jason was promoted to General Manager in 2012 in Yakima, Washington. Ready for his wife to leave her position and start a family, Jason went “from dirty laundry to garbage” and joined Republic Services in Portland. “In a perfect world, the average person doesn’t worry about garbage.

They just assume it magically disappears,” Jason continued.

“In actuality, this is the most complex business I’ve ever managed. As an environmental services company, we must find a responsible and sustainable way to recycle and dispose of materials.” A vertically integrated company, Republic collects, transfers and processes or recovers/reuses everything it collects. For instance, cardboard is transferred to Georgia Pacific and metals go to Metro Metals in Portland.

What is topmost on Jason’s mind is the health and welfare of his employees and customers. The residential drivers, for instance, have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. They do between 800-1000 cart lifts per day, often under threatening conditions — kids or pets running into the street, or impatient drivers passing the stopped truck and often hitting either the driver or nearby pedestrians.

Jason highly values supporting and staying involved in the community. He serves on boards such as the Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce, the Mid-Valley Garbage and Recycling Association and the Advisory Board for Linfield University.

So next time you roll your bin out for collection or find yourself stuck behind one of those familiar blue trucks, remember all of the hard-working folks and their daily efforts to make it easy for us.

The History of Chocolate Ancient, delicious and divine

W

hen we hear the word “chocolate,” most of us picture a bar, ice cream, baked goods, or a confection of some type. Typically eating chocolate, not drinking it, and a sweet taste is usually associated with chocolate rather than a savory one.

However, for approximately 90% of chocolate’s extensive history, it was primarily a beverage, and sugar didn’t figure into the equation at all.

While the terminology can be a bit puzzling, most contemporary experts refer to “cacao” as the plant or its beans prior to processing, while the term “chocolate” refers to a product made from the beans. “Cocoa” is the term for chocolate in powdered form, though across the Atlantic, the British frequently use the word “cacao.”

“Chocolate” has been traced by etymologists back to the Aztec word “xocoatl,” which described a bitter beverage brewed from cacao beans. The Latin name for the cacao tree,

Theobroma cacao, translates to “food of the gods.” Historians today estimate that chocolate has been around for at least 2000 years, but recent research suggests it may be even older.

Although it’s difficult to establish an exact date for the origin of chocolate, it’s evident that it was valued from the very beginning. For many centuries in premodern Latin America, cacao beans were actually used as currency. A single bean could buy one tamale, while 100 beans could be traded for a good turkey hen, as noted in a 16th-century Aztec document.

Both the Mayans and Aztecs considered the cacao bean magical and sometimes divine.

It was commonly a part of sacred rituals of birth, death, and marriage.

It wasn’t until Europeans discovered the Americas and became familiar with the native cuisine that chocolate made its entrance on the world stage. According to legend, the Aztec king Montezuma welcomed the Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes with a feast that included drinking chocolate. Although chocolate didn’t initially agree with the European palate, once it was mixed with honey or sugar, it rapidly grew in popularity throughout Spain.

By the 17th century, Europeans had embraced chocolate as a glamorous drink, reputed to possess medicinal, nutritious, and even aphrodisiac properties — rumors suggest that Casanova was a

big fan of chocolate. But it remained primarily a drink of the upper class until the invention of the steam engine revolutionized chocolate production, resulting in chocolate becoming available in mass quantities to society at large.

It was in 1828 when a Dutch chemist devised a method to create powdered chocolate by filtering out approximately half the natural fat (cacao butter) from chocolate liquor, pulverizing what remained and introducing a mixture of alkaline salts to negate the bitter taste.

This product, known as “Dutch cocoa,” eventually led to the development of solid chocolate.

Joseph Fry, in 1847, is credited with the creation of the world’s first chocolate bar. Fry discovered that by adding melted cacao butter back into Dutch cocoa, the result was a moldable chocolate paste. Within 20 years of Fry’s discovery, the now famous company Cadbury was selling boxes of chocolate candy in Britain. Soon thereafter, another recognizable name, Nestle, pioneered the creation of milk chocolate in Switzerland.

During the Revolutionary War in America, chocolate was so valued that it was included in soldiers’ rations in lieu of wages. Most of us today wouldn’t likely settle for payment in chocolate over dollars, but that doesn’t mean the

humble cacao bean isn’t a potent force in the economy. In the U.S. alone, chocolate is a four billion dollar industry, and the average American consumes at least half a pound per month.

In recent times, a chocolate revolution has swept across the globe, marked by a burgeoning interest in high-quality, artisanal chocolates and sustainable, efficient cacao farming and harvesting techniques. Due to this shift in consumer tastes, large corporations like Hershey’s have developed artisanal chocolate lines by acquiring smaller premium chocolate producers, and independent chocolatiers have proliferated as well.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, artisanal chocolate has exploded in recent years. One of the first chocolatiers on the Portland scene was Moonstruck; though recently sold to a larger company, Moonstruck helped establish a market for gourmet chocolate in the city. Currently, there are a plethora of artisanal chocolatiers in the local area. Missionary Chocolates in Northeast Portland, founded by a doctor with a passion for chocolate, produces delicious dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan chocolate and non-allergenic truffles.

February To-Do’s THINGS TO DO AROUND THE HOME BEFORE SPRING ARRIVES

T

he holidays are over — a diminishing blur in the rearview mirror. January’s interim moment of quiet renewal and reflection has also come and gone.

February is a time to get back to work and start addressing some of those projects we’ve most likely been putting off. When spring arrives, we’ll all come out of our shells to begin the annual ritual of clearing the winter mess from our yards, repairing the damage, and attempting to coerce some order out of all the chaos. In the meantime, there are several things we can do to help set the stage. It’s not all sunshine and strawberry fields forever, not yet. So, weather depending, here is a list of chores we should all consider tackling sooner rather than later.

1. Pruning : Particularly in the past few years, ice storms have wreaked havoc on our trees and shrubs. Since we are likely to have at least a few dry days in February, this is a wonderful time to get outside and get a head start on the cleanup. Additionally, bare branches are much easier to assess when it comes to shaping and trimming for optimal light exposure. That said, you don’t want to prune if it’s going to rain again within the next 24 hours (the fresh cuts are vulnerable to infection). So watch the

forecast and plan accordingly. And don’t be too concerned if the weather doesn’t cooperate. While it’s certainly more difficult to maneuver through all of the leaves, you will have more opportunities to do this in the summer months.

2. Repairing outdoor features: Once those gorgeous summer days begin to arrive, you won’t want to be wasting precious hours stabilizing those wobbly stepping stones or fixing the sagging gate that provides the only access to your RV. While

certain projects (like repairing a wooden fence) might be better during the dryer months, the vast majority of these types of projects can be addressed now. Take advantage of this “quieter” time of year, and handle these types of repairs before the summer hits.

3. Preparing your equipment: Lawn mowers tend to be used and abused by most of us. We simply throw gas in them each season and expect them to work. And if we wait until the lawn is actually in need of a trim before discovering there is a problem, it’s likely that service shops will already be overwhelmed. So check now! YouTube is full of videos on how to properly maintain your mower and, if necessary, how to sharpen and/or replace your blade.

4. Indoor paint and wall repairs: February is a terrific time to touch up all of those wall dings, scrapes, and scuffs you obtained while putting up your Griswold Family Christmas Tree. Some of those marks might just wipe off with the use of a damp melamine-foam sponge. For more serious dings and scrapes, use spackle to fill the hole, wait for it to dry, then sand and paint. Most interior paints cure when the temperature is between 50 and 85 degrees. So don’t wait until August!

5. Cleaning and organizing closets: This is a big one! Closets

are often treated, at best, like an oversized junk drawer; at worst, like an oversized garbage can. Once a year, it’s a good idea to get in there and purge all of those items that you don’t wear or don’t use. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t worn or used it over the course of the past year, consider getting rid of it. Leonardo DiVinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

Declutter! Also, check coats for fabric moths (any spots with cobweb-like matting or fibrous cylinders). Brush them clean and vacuum, then have the garments washed or dry-cleaned before rehanging.

6. Cleaning out medicine cabinets: If you are like most

Americans, you probably have a medicine cabinet full of halfused, old, and sometimes even expired medications. Like your closet, it’s a great idea to go through your cabinets once a year and clear out all of your old medications. Be mindful however, and make sure to dispose of them properly (many pharmacies will take them back from you).

7. Dusting: Spring cleaning doesn’t have to wait for spring!

In the winter, when it’s typically dark for much of the day, we don’t notice all the dust and cobwebs that tend to accumulate in corners and on shelves. It’s often embarrassing, that first time the sun shines through the windows and you see things in the natural light. A duster with polyester fibers (which use electrostatic action to attract particles) and a long enough handle to reach your ceiling works best. Clean the highest areas first, let things settle, then come back to finish the lower spaces. And don’t forget blinds, fan blades, and lampshades!

8. Checking fire extinguishers and HVAC filters: Everyone should have at least one fire extinguisher in their house and you should know how to use it. Don’t wait for a fire to read the instructions! Also, extinguishers lose their charge over time, so be sure to check the gauge and replace yours every 12 years. HVAC systems only work as well as their filters allow.

Particularly when you are switching from heat to AC (or the reverse), it’s a good idea to change out your old filters.

9. Deep cleaning bathrooms:

Showers and baths wreak havoc on our bathroom walls.

Particularly in the winter time when windows are kept closed, it’s impossible to combat all of that moisture.

Soap particles affixed to water droplets also leave mildew on the walls and can turn your bathroom into a dingy space.

While much of this mildew can simply be wiped off using water and a cloth, the best offense is a good defense. By cracking the window and/ or running the fan every time you bathe, you keep the humidity at a minimum.

Also, keep the grill for your fan clean to allow free airflow.
