Is your family pet just that? Family? If you could, wouldn’t you make visits to the vet less stressful – for both of you? Hearthstone Veterinary Hospital feels the same way! From the time you enter their cozy livingroom-style lobby and throughout the entire visit, you’ll find Hearthstone’s “fear free” practices warm and inviting. Independently owned, Hearthstone Veterinary Hospital has been serving the local community since 2022. Although a relatively new practice in the Tigard-Beaverton area, its owner Dr. Elly Burnett is a seasoned veterinary practitioner with years of experience. Dr. Burnett makes an effort to get to know her clients and their pets by spending time with the owners and discovering each pet’s unique personality. “The environment I’m trying to create here,” shares Dr. Burnett, “is one where a family or client comes in with their pet and they don’t feel like they’re just another number in the day. I want them to feel included in the decision-making process.”

Certified as a “fear free” practitioner, Dr. Burnett and her staff use low-stress handling techniques for both dogs and cats. Some of these practices include utilizing treat rewards, gentle restraint and if it’s necessary to take blood, keeping a pet with their owner as much as possible. “What I hear frequently,” comments Dr. Burnett, “is ‘My dog (or cat) is never this relaxed at the vet.’” Hearthstone also practices GoldStandard Surgery with state-of-theart monitoring

equipment and an in-house laboratory that gives same-day results. Administering the best care possible and keeping your pet safe is Hearthstone’s highest priority.

Presently, Dr. Elly Burnett is Hearthstone’s sole veterinarian. She lives less than a mile away and employs a local staff which includes her mom, Denise and her sister Frances. Both her mom and sister add a personal touch and lighthearted family element to the business. Along with Denise’s bookkeeping services, she often answers phones and helps out in other ways as needed. Dr. Burnett enjoys her mom’s humor and comments, “She’s very funny when working the front desk. She always brings her knitting and she’ll chat it up with the clients.” On the phone, Denise has been heard telling a client, “The vet is very good with cats, and I know that because she’s my daughter.”

Frances joined Hearthstone last September as a veterinary assistant and Dr. Burnett’s “right hand.” She is also working towards taking over the management of Hearthstone’s practice as well. Having followed Dr. Burnett into the veterinary field in

2016, whenever circumstances allowed Dr. Burnett would bring Frances on board so they could work together. Today, Dr. Burnett is thrilled to have her sister as a permanent member of staff. “It’s great

working with her – we share a lot of banter,” says Dr. Burnett, pointing out that with their mom in the office as well, her sister’s been known to quip, “I’m telling mom!”

Dr. Burnett, who rides horses as a hobby, admits, “One of my goals when I went to veterinary school was to be a horse doctor, but I ended up working with small animals and really enjoying it.” She also sponsors a jump for a summer schooling series which takes place at the barn where she rides and boards her horse. Participants are able to gain experience in this non-rated series without all the pressure and expense of the bigger shows. Dr. Burnett sees this as a nice way to give back to the community and the donation helps support the shows and sponsors kids who can’t afford the fees.

Pioneering Legacy

Linn County’s first Black resident

The first Black resident of Linn County, Oregon was a woman then known only as Cora Ann. She was born into slavery in Virginia between 1822 and 1833, and by 1837 was living in New Orleans, where she was purchased by 32-year-old Emeline Carey Sellick. In 1850, Emeline and Cora moved to Missouri, where Emeline married Samuel Johnson. That same year, the couple moved to Oregon, and Cora traveled with them on the Oregon Trail as an enslaved overland pioneer.

When the Johnson party reached Oregon in the fall of 1850, Cora became one of just 55 Black people in the Oregon Territory. African Americans – free or enslaved – had been legally barred from coming to Oregon since 1849. However, legislation targeting Black people often went unenforced within Oregon’s disparate farming communities. This allowed a handful of Black Americans to remain in Oregon despite their legal exclusion, but it also allowed slavery to continue long after the practice was prohibited. Oregon’s Supreme Court outlawed slavery in 1853; Cora, however, would continue to be held as Emeline’s slave until the 1860s.

Samuel Johnson claimed a 640 acre homestead near Brownsville in Linn County, and built a home which he and his wife shared with Cora. The Johnsons had no children. Samuel Johnson drowned in the Calapooia River in January 1858, leaving Emeline and Cora alone.

In December 1858, Cora married John Cox, a Black farm laborer. Theirs is the earliest recorded marriage of two Black people in Oregon. John Cox worked for Jefferson Huff, a white widowed father of two from Tennessee who was likely John’s former owner. Two months later, Emeline and Jefferson Huff were married, and all began sharing the same home.

Cora and John had a daughter named Adeline in 1860. In that year’s census, Cora and Adeline were listed as slaves, while John was listed as free. A second daughter, Angeline, was born in 1864. Cora was emancipated in or before 1864 as well. That year, Emeline sold her “former servant” Cora 36.3 acres of land from her homestead with Samuel Johnson for just $10.00, in recognition of “faithful services rendered.” This purchase made Cora one of the earliest Black landowners

in Oregon history. John Cox built a home for his family on this land that same year.

Cora remained close to Emeline even after receiving her freedom. In 1866, Cora testified in Emeline’s divorce trial against Jefferson Huff. The testimony of a Black woman was extremely rare in 19th century Oregon.

Cora was well known throughout the Willamette Valley; she and her husband were affectionately called “Aunt Cora” and “Uncle John” by their friends and neighbors. She was wellconnected within the region’s small Black community. Cora attended Oregon’s earliest-known Emancipation Day celebration in Salem in 1867, alongside fellow Black pioneers like Ben Johnson and Amanda Gardner.

John Cox died in 1875, but Cora remained in her home until 1886. She sold the house and land that year for $600 and moved to Brownsville. Cora lived comfortably from the sale of her property for the rest of her life. Sources say Cora even made a monetary gift to Willamette University Women’s College in her will. Cora Cox passed away in 1892. The house she lived in from 1864-1886 still stands today, making it one of Oregon’s oldest homes.

U.S. Army vet turns dedicated fire marshal

David Nelson is what one might affectionately refer to as a relic of a bygone era. He is the type of man we refer to with hushed reverential tones and argue, “They don’t make them like that anymore.” He is a man of grit and principle with a DIY sensibility and a work ethic second to none. After dedicating his life to the service of others, of literally putting his own life on the line to ensure the safety of the community at large, he is a man to be venerated.

It all began in 1966, when at the age of 24, David was drafted into the U.S. Army. At that time, he had a promising job working as a safety engineer for an insurance company and was also a volunteer firefighter with the Beaverton Fire Department. Following the invitation to serve his country, he left his home in Oregon to attend boot camp at Fort Ord, California, where he was quickly recognized for his innate leadership skills. He was promoted to Squad Leader for Infantry Training and named “Outstanding Trainee” of his entire Company (250 men)! He was then assigned to Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Lee, Virginia, where, upon completion, he would find his name listed on the shipping roster to go to Vietnam.

Before leaving, however, he would discover that his father was

diagnosed with leukemia, and he would receive a “compassionate reassignment” to go instead to Fort Lewis, Washington, which enabled him to be closer to his father. Reporting for duty, he requested and was granted assignment to the Crash Rescue Fire Station at Fort Lewis Gray Army Airfield. A lot of the work the Crash Rescue Team did was familiar, and utilized not only his insurance industry experience, but also his education and background in firefighting and prevention. He served the balance of his tour as Crew Chief and was discharged as a Sgt E5.

David’s father was Fire Chief and one of the founders of the Summit Fire Department in Woodinville, Washington. David had grown up in that environment, attended and graduated from the Oklahoma State University’s School of Fire Protection (one of only two schools in the entire country at the time that offered such a program), and had always intended to be in some way involved in the fire service. As it happened, David was able to utilize that prior training to his and the Army’s advantage and gain additional experience. When he was honorably discharged in 1968, David returned to his insurance job (which, incidentally, he had continued to work part-time, even while in the Army). A year later, he left the insurance company and

would join the Beaverton Fire Department as a paid firefighter, becoming Fire Marshal for the City; he retired from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue in 1999.

David is a highly-decorated and well-respected member of the firefighting community. Throughout his lifetime of dedicated service, to his country, community and friends and neighbors, David Nelson has always put the safety and wellbeing of others before his own. Next time you see him in town, make sure to recognize him for his brave and selfless nature, and thank him for his service.
