Claude DaCorsi has been managing restaurants and bars for over 25 years. He was running things at the Double Aught Ranch in Canby when he was inadvertently introduced to the CEO of Pizza Schmizza.

The standard location is focused on the pizza-by-the-slice concept, while the Pub ‘N Grub has an expanded menu which includes sandwiches, pastas, and alcohol. The Public House, however, is the bad boy on the block and includes their full menu, 24 or more beers on tap, and a more inviting atmosphere for a complete sitdown dining experience. Oregon City’s new location is a Public House, so we are getting the whole enchilada!

For those wanting to partake of the classic pies that the brand is known for, you should understand that this is not any old run-ofthe-mill pizza. The New York style, thin-crust dough is hand-tossed every day, not frozen, with Parmesan added for additional flair!

They use proprietary blends in the dough, the sauce, the cheese, and the marinades used on all of their meats. Much of the food you order here, you literally cannot get anywhere else, and because they source locally whenever possible, they support local business while simultaneously keeping their flavor profiles unique to the region.

Claude took an immediate interest in the Schmizza model and, after wrapping things up in Canby, he and his wife Hannah (an Oregon City native) decided to buy into the franchise. They built and opened their first location in Gresham, and their second in Wilsonville just last year. Now their 3rd location has just recently opened in Oregon City, and what a welcome addition it is!

It’s difficult enough to open a new restaurant, but during a worldwide pandemic, it seems nigh on impossible.

Claude is confident in the power of the brand, though.

He’d never owned a franchise prior to Schmizza, but he truly believes in their product. If the support he’s received from the communities surrounding his other locations is any indication, he’s optimistic that this one will be just as successful.

The Schmizza brand has a significant presence in the Portland Metropolitan area. Most of us have enjoyed the Schmizza experience at one point or another, and if you’ve visited them in multiple cities, you’ll know that there can be some significant differences between one location and the next. According to Claude, they actually have 3 different restaurant styles: the standard Pizza Schmizza, the Pub ’n Grub, and the Public House.

Schmizza is known for their unique combinations of pizza toppings as well. While they don’t have it available right now (due to COVID), you’ll have to remember to order the Alligator Pie once it’s available again - it’s made with real alligator sausage! They’ve also been known to throw on figs, potatoes, broccoli, and any number of unusual toppings to keep things interesting.

Many of the combinations have been inspired by customers in the past and Claude is trying to bring that back around.

As mentioned, they will be carrying at least 24 beers on tap. They’ve collaborated with Fearless Brewing Company in Estacada to bring you their 4 “house beers” which will always be available on tap. Those are: Thor’s Hammer IPA, Loki Red Ale, Clackamas Pale Ale, and either the Fearless Scottish Ale or Fearless Porter - the latter two will be alternated. At any given time 90% of the beers on tap will be local.

Pizza and beer might be expected at a Public House, but here’s a surprise for

those with more refined tastes: they will also be serving martini flights! According to Claude, who was quite the expert on bartending, the trick is knowing how to use bitters. We are currently in the midst of a bitter movement! Bitters have incredibly powerful and complex flavors which, with only a few drops, can completely alter the taste of any drink.

In Portland craft beer is all the rage, but with bitters, Claude and his team are making craft martinis. Liquor flights are all about introducing people to unique flavors they may have never tried before, and they’re very excited to introduce you to their new concoctions!

Food specialties at this location will include Frikin’ Chicken Pasta, Dipsticks, Chicken Parmigiana Sandwich, Brussel Sprouts, Seared Green Beans, and Street Tacos. Exclusive to the Oregon City location,

you’ll find the Nashville Chicken Sandwich (crispy buttermilk-breaded chicken, house-made Nashville sauce, remoulade sauce, garlic and dill pickles) and delicious Cauliflower Bites! So hurry over today and get your fix!

Local Solutions For Local Problems

S

ince it began in 2011, the Oregon City Together (OCT) has grown to be a wellestablished community voice. It focuses primarily on preventing youth alcohol and marijuana use, the two substances with the most prevelance among Oregon City teens.

The coalition comprises diverse sectors of the community.

These include parents, teens, law enforcement, faithbased organizations, education, business, media, civic organizations, health care, agencies dealing with substance use, neighborhood associations and government.

“We work to help ensure every youth grows to their full potential,” says OCT Chair Laura Poore. “And our work is needed more than ever right now.”

With the pandemic, most teens have had little or no inschool experiences. Missed milestones. Uncertain about the future. Little personal contact with friends. Worries about family’s finances. The list is long. And a jump to early drug use could be short.

Screenagers, Angst and The Upstanders that increase awareness on how to reduce teen stress and anxiety.

The coalition has been nimble during the pandemic.

When schools closed last spring, it produced a stressreduction art kit and worked with the school district to

distribute to students. An inschool drug prevention event became an online Halloween poster celebration. Middle school health teachers, the Oregon City Chamber of Commerce, the Oregon City Optimist Club, the Downtown Oregon City Association and many local businesses helped make the event successful.

“School and community partners like these are essential,” says Poore.

“The environment also can make a big difference.”

Oregonians legalized recreational marijuana in 2014. According to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, there are eight licenses for marijuana retail outlets within the city limits, ensuring youth see considerable advertising and signage. Far fewer youth now think using marijuana will harm them, increasing the likelihood of future use.

The Clackamas County Commission recognized the negative impact of legalization on youth and several years ago began leveraging marijuana retail taxes to fund youth substance abuse prevention grants. Oregon City Together is a recipient of one of these grants.

“These are the sort of issues we address,” says Poore.

“We use evidence-based strategies to increase awareness, provide support and change the environment. The coalition helps build youth resiliency skills and encourages positive parent actions that influence what kids do.”

For example, the coalition hosted a speaker last month on adolescent brain development. It also sponsors free community movies for parents and teens like 14 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Prevention is cost-effective. According to the American Public Health Association, every dollar spent on prevention saves at least $5.60 in health spending farther down the road. This does not count the immense value of preventing drug addiction’s trail of broken lives, destroyed families and unfulfilled potential.

“Why wait until there is a problem and a young person is addicted? We need to act now.”

Grilled Huli Huli Chicken Thighs

June means that perfect grilling weather has finally arrived, so bust out that bag of charcoal or make sure the propane tank is filled - it’s time to turn up the heat with this tangy Hawaiian grilled chicken recipe! It’s so easy and delicious, you may find yourself making it again and again this summer.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup ketchup 3/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/3 cup sherry or chicken broth 2-1/2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger root 1-1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 24 boneless skinless chicken thighs (about 6 pounds) DIRECTIONS

1. In a small bowl, mix the first 6 ingredients.

Reserve 1-1/3 cups for basting; cover and refrigerate.

2. Divide remaining marinade between 2 large shallow dishes. Add 12 chicken thighs to each; turn to coat. Refrigerate, covered, for 8 hours or overnight.

3. Drain chicken, discarding marinade.

4. Grill chicken, covered, on an oiled rack over medium heat for 6-8 minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 170°; baste occasionally with reserved marinade during the last 5 minutes. *recipe reprinted from tasteofhome.com
