Soulful Sojourns

Making travel matter in Africa

We tend to only think of giving back with donations of time or money. While these are certainly an option and even needed, there are initiatives and organic circumstances where making a positive difference is a beautiful byproduct of an enriching travel experience. On a recent educational journey to South Africa and Namibia, my wife and I explored Cape Town and the Cape Winelands, saw the big five within 24 hours at Kapama River Lodge, and then ventured into the Namib Desert on what was probably the most memorable trip we have ever taken. We also saw firsthand the power of Make Travel Matter and other positive-impact travel in action.

Isibane Se Afrika performed at a group dinner event on our first night at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa Cape Town. Founded by Andisiwe Gaqa in Khayelitsha, the group provides local youth with an alternative to street life, steering them away from drugs and gang culture. The performances were truly mesmerizing, and to experience something so positive and uplifting at the start of our trip set the tone for what was a lifechanging vacation. We met with them again a few days later when we were treated to more performances at the Amy Foundation. Learn more about this traditional African and gospel choir at isibaneseafrika.org.

The Amy Foundation offers programs for youth ages 5-35 from vulnerable communities in the Western Cape. Their afterschool programs focus on creative learning to help children succeed academically, and their Youth Skills Development program prepares young adults for employment and entrepreneurship. I was thrilled to learn that many wonderful

staff members of The Twelve Apostles Hotel graduated from this program. While originating from tragedy, the story of how the foundation was formed is inspiring too. On August 25, 1993, Amy Biehl was killed in Gugulethu, near Cape Town. Her parents, honoring her love for South Africa and belief in reconciliation, together with two of the young men convicted of Amy’s murder, helped found this nonprofit. There are lots of ways to get involved with the foundation, including full or halfday tours for travelers visiting Cape Town. Contact your travel advisor or learn more at amyfoundation.co.za.

City tours offer a comprehensive understanding of South Africa’s vibrant past and promising future. Why not choose one that also brings an enormous benefit to the local communities too? African Travel, Inc., a preferred partner for African journeys, introduced us to a unique nonprofit. Uthando, which means “love” in Xhosa, is dedicated to raising funds for transformative community development projects in South Africa. If interested in Cape Town’s rich culture, history and philanthropic efforts, please consider a private experience with Uthando. Their exclusive tours take you through the city’s eastern townships, showcasing diverse community projects that uplift residents through arts and education. Projects could include animal welfare, special needs education, assistance to refugees, economic empowerment through skills development, care and protection for children, women and the elderly, and much more. Find more details at uthandosa.org.

Nestled in the breathtaking rugged mountains and shifting sand dunes, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is in the heart of the Purros Conservancy in Namibia. We spent three nights at this spectacular Sanctuary Retreats property, which

BUSINESS FEATURE TRAVEL & CRUISE DESK 12 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

offers incredible stargazing. This was booked through Abercrombie and Kent, a great and socially conscious partner we work with. A dreamlike stay included incredible food and the most friendly and attentive staff I’ve ever encountered. Sanctuary Retreats not only has active Philanthropy Projects throughout Africa, but we discovered that staying here creates a chain reaction of positive economic and environmental effects, as the

property provides jobs for hotel staff, guides and conservationists during a time when climate change is making the traditional work of herding goats and cattle extremely difficult. While it’s more extreme now, the harsh climate is what makes conservation so important here. Much of the wildlife, like elephants, lions and other animals have special adaptations found only here. The conservancy is mostly funded by the fees paid by this

resort and camps in the area, so staying at this property directly helps with conservation too. As a side note, while the wildlife may be less abundant than you might find elsewhere in Africa, our guide Uanee was amazing, and the thrill of tracking and spotting these rare animals made it just as incredible an experience. We were also grateful that the activities and interactions with locals are designed to benefit, yet limit the impact upon and help preserve the cultures and traditions of the local Himba and Herero communities still living here. Read about Sanctuary Retreats’ Philanthropy projects at sanctuaryretreats.com/philanthropy.

Hollywood Insider to Freelance Entertainer

Elizabeth Dreyfuss’s remarkable journey in showbiz

Actress, singer and dancer Elizabeth Dreyfuss was born into a four-generation show business family. Her parents were both in the film industry — her father Eric was a studio makeup artist who once did makeup for classic actor Alec Guiness as Fagin in the original David Lean movie “Oliver Twist,” and her mother Eleanor was a hairstylist who once bleached Laurence Olivier’s hair in the classic film “Hamlet.” Her older sister, Dela Zimmer, was also a child opera singer/ prodigy, with a four-octave range at 10 years old. She was on BBC radio at 12 years old and went on to sing solo at the Royal Albert Hall for royalty.

Growing up in England, Elizabeth studied dance and drama at a very prestigious arts school and left home at 15 years old for the lead in a musical, as Red Riding Hood in London’s West End. Later, she went on to do leads in musicals like West Side Story, as well as TV comedy shows and classic BBC TV plays. An American cousin convinced her to move to California in 1978, and she quickly realized there was no theatre to speak of in Los Angeles; she loved the city though. Elizabeth said, “I auditioned and got some tv work as an actress but it wasn’t fulfilling enough, so I ended up behind the scenes”. She tried Public Relations for a while, booking Tom Cruise on the Merv Griffin Show — Tom’s first talk show – plugging his movie “Risky Business” and later became an executive assistant to director Ridley Scott (Gladiator & Blade Runner) and to producer Don Bellisario (creator of Magnum PI and Quantum Leap).

Then she took her experience and started her own film location business, Ascot Locations, which became very successful. In 1982, Elizabeth met and dated Lorin Dreyfuss, a very funny comedy writer/ actor/producer and brother of the actor Richard Dreyfuss; they would meet again and marry in 1993. It wasn’t until she retired and moved to Palm Springs that Richard heard Elizabeth sing with a jazz band: he said, “Wow I had know idea you can sing like that, you are a born performer and should be doing more.” So she wrote a cabaret called “Relatively Singing: An Evening of Cabaret and Sibling Revelry,” which she performed with her sister Dela, and has since written six cabaret shows. The show was a hit and they performed it many times. Later, Elizabeth performed with a jazz band.

When her husband Lorin died, she moved to Lake Oswego to be near her son and grandson, and she still lives and she loves it here. She has been singing and performing her one hour cabaret show, telling her funny and fascinating showbiz stories and singing songs from the American Songbook, classic pop songs and Broadway songs, in places like The Springs and Touchmark in Lake Oswego. But as she did in California, Elizabeth is returning to her roots and doing in-home concerts, where she performs and entertains families and friends in their own homes — a little party with wine and appetizers, then everyone sits down to entertainment. Elizabeth comes with a guitarist, tracks, her own amps and mic and small spotlights.

If you’re interestedin more information orhiring Elizabeth Dreyfuss fora private event, visit her website at thegeekprofessor.com/liz, or contact her at tuscanyliz@gmail.com or (760) 902-2143.

Another exciting addition to the market this year is the pilot of the Young Entrepreneur program, which focuses on highlighting the young talent in Lake Oswego. A group of 20 students, all artists or food producers, work with hot food vendors and local artisans to learn about running a business and all that comes with it. The kids follow the same steps as the vendors like getting insurance, finding a licensed kitchen for food preparation and using social media marketing to boost their business. “It’s an opportunity for mentorship and education and to help our high school students foster that passion for entrepreneurship,” Emily explains.

TThe Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market is not just a place to appreciate our incredible local food producers, it’s a hub of community and togetherness. “There’s such a strong sense of community,” she says. “Whether it’s our dedicated staff, volunteers, our amazing customers or vendors, everyone pitches in and helps one another, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that’s truly special.”

Beverage Bros drinks are inspired by the hours we have spent experimenting and playing in the kitchen. With our families’ encouragement, we decided to bring our favorite drinks to the market. Our cold brew is made with locally roasted Mae’s coffee and our handcrafted syrups are made with scrumptious candy to enhance your favorite bubbly beverage. Ben has always enjoyed making drinks for people, and at age 11, began creating syrups with melted popsicles and candy. Liam has always enjoyed being creative in the kitchen, and by age of 12, was selling them at neighborhood stands. PET TIPS FOR

JUNE

Pets dehydrate fast on hot days. Make sure they have a big bowl of fresh water, plenty of shade, don’t overheat them with too much playing, and keep them inside if it’s crazy hot. If your pet is overheated, symptoms may include heavy panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, excessive drooling, weakness, daze, or even collapse. So keep them cool and hydrated.

Take a Swim

Cool off with a nice swim, but be mindful that pool water contains chemicals which are toxic if ingested and many pets can’t swim. If your dog does swim, take them for a dip in a local creek, river or beach. Just keep them on a leash or closeby, and give them plenty of breaks. And enjoy the water!

pending time outside with animals during summer days is fantastic. But it can also be dangerous. Follow these guidelines to help them stay cool and safe.

Fireworks

With July 4th approaching, it’s good to remember most animals are scared by loud fireworks. If unavoidable, put your pets in a quiet, secure spot to protect them from emotional trauma, burns and toxic chemicals found in fireworks.

Don’t Park

BBQs

This is no joke – heat stroke can be deadly! Never leave your animals alone in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked. After 1 hour your car can be 43 degrees hotter inside!

Go Hiking

Barbecue season is here! But with that comes insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, citronella candles, charcoal and other dangers. The same goes for alcohol and foods that are toxic to pets like raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and xylitol. And really, most human food isn’t healthy for pets. Keep an eye on your dogs and keep cats inside if possible. Then enjoy!

Maybe this one is obvious, but take a trip to the trails with your pup. Sunshine and exercise is great for everyone, and going for a drive will get you out of your rut and comfort zone and maybe even lead to adventure. Make sure to bring water, food and collapsible dishes for your doggo.

The Wednesday Concert Series further enriches the summer calendar, showcasing an eclectic lineup of musicians and tribute bands. From the soulful sounds of Curtis Salgado to the highenergy performances of Beat Division and Hit Machine, along with nostalgic tunes with Stone In Love, these concerts promise unforgettable evenings of music.

More music adventures on Sunday evenings at Millennium Plaza Park will feature dynamic performances by Barrio Mestizo, the Norman Sylvester Band, Hillstomp and Mbrascatu. Linn County’s first Black resident

The history of Father’s Day

The first Black resident of Linn County, Oregon was a woman then known only as Cora Ann. She was born into slavery in Virginia between 1822 and 1833, and by 1837 was living in New Orleans, where she was purchased by 32-year-old Emeline Carey Sellick. In 1850, Emeline and Cora moved to Missouri, where Emeline married Samuel Johnson. That same year, the couple moved to Oregon, and Cora traveled with them on the Oregon Trail as an enslaved overland pioneer.

Father’s Day will be celebrated on June 16 this year. Father’s Day, a holiday celebrated around the world, is a day dedicated to honoring fathers and father figures.

When the Johnson party reached Oregon in the fall of 1850, Cora became one of just 55 Black people in the Oregon Territory. African Americans – free or enslaved – had been legally barred from coming to Oregon since 1849. However, legislation targeting Black people often went unenforced within Oregon’s disparate farming communities. This allowed a handful of Black Americans to remain in Oregon despite their legal exclusion, but it also allowed slavery to continue long after the practice was prohibited. Oregon’s Supreme Court outlawed slavery in 1853; Cora, however, would continue to be held as Emeline’s slave until the 1860s.

Samuel Johnson claimed a 640 acre homestead near Brownsville in Linn County, and built a home which he and his wife shared with Cora. The Johnsons had no children. Samuel Johnson drowned in the Calapooia River in January 1858, leaving Emeline and Cora alone.

In December 1858, Cora married John Cox, a Black farm laborer. Theirs is the earliest recorded marriage of two Black people in Oregon. John Cox worked for Jefferson Huff, a white widowed father of two from Tennessee who was likely John’s former owner. Two months later, Emeline and Jefferson Huff were married, and all began sharing the same home.

The origins of Father’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century in the United States. The holiday’s establishment is often credited to Sonora Smart Dodd, who was inspired by the newly recognized Mother’s Day. Sonora, the daughter of a Civil War veteran and single father, William Jackson Smart, wanted to honor her father’s selfless service in the war. So in 1909 she proposed the idea of Father’s Day to local ministers in Spokane, Washington, to be celebrated on June 5, her father’s birthday. However, there wasn’t enough time to prepare for the holiday that year, so the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.

Father’s Day gradually gained popularity, with several attempts made to establish it as a national holiday. It wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon officially recognized Father’s Day as a national holiday in the United States, to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year.

around the house. This social shift could be seen in how people viewed Father’s Day as a celebration, not only of paternal authority but also of paternal love, care and nurturing.

in Oregon history. John Cox built a home for his family on this land that same year.

Cora remained close to Emeline even after receiving her freedom. In 1866, Cora testified in Emeline’s divorce trial against Jefferson Huff. The testimony of a Black woman was extremely rare in 19th century Oregon.

Cora was well known throughout the Willamette Valley; she and her husband were affectionately called “Aunt Cora” and “Uncle John” by their friends and neighbors. She was wellconnected within the region’s small Black community. Cora attended Oregon’s earliest-known Emancipation Day celebration in Salem in 1867, alongside fellow Black pioneers like Ben Johnson and Amanda Gardner.

John Cox died in 1875, but Cora remained in her home until 1886. She sold the house and land that year for $600 and moved to Brownsville. Cora lived comfortably from the sale of her property for the rest of her life. Sources say Cora even made a monetary gift to Willamette University Women’s College in her will. Cora Cox passed away in 1892.

Throughout its history, Father’s Day underwent several transformations due to cultural, social and economic factors. Initially, it was celebrated with the simple gestures of wearing a red rose to honor a living father and a white rose to honor a deceased father. Greeting cards, often accompanied by gifts and family gatherings, became increasingly

Cora and John had a daughter named Adeline in 1860. In that year’s census, Cora and Adeline were listed as slaves, while John was listed as free. A second daughter, Angeline, was born in 1864. Cora was emancipated in or before 1864 as well. That year, Emeline sold her “former servant” Cora 36.3 acres of land from her homestead with Samuel Johnson for just $10.00, in recognition of “faithful services rendered.” This purchase made Cora one of the earliest Black landowners

Around the world, Father’s Day has different origins and traditions. In many countries, it’s celebrated on different dates and with varying traditions. For example, in Catholic countries like Spain and Portugal, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19, coinciding with the Feast of St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ. In Germany, Father’s Day, known as “Vatertag,” is celebrated on Ascension Day, with traditions that include men going on hiking trips and pulling wagons filled

The house she lived in from 1864-1886 still stands today, making it one of Oregon’s oldest homes.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide with a variety of traditions, ranging from simple acts of appreciation to elaborate family gatherings, gift-giving and beer-filled wagons (yes, please!). While its commercialization is often criticized, Father’s Day remains an important holiday for expressing gratitude and love for fathers and father figures, honoring their contributions to family and society as a whole.

Serving Those Who Serve

Nonprofit holds care-package fundraiser

With a presidential election on the horizon, it’s easy to get caught up in the political drama of which we’re all constantly bombarded. The stakes feel higher than ever, as they have for every single election of the last couple of decades. Arguments will break out over family dinners and shocking news stories will be shared on social media. America will seem more divided than it ever has been. And yet, if there is any single subject on which everyone, left, right and center can agree, it’s that our military veterans and active service members deserve our respect and care.

Blue Star Mothers of America is dedicated to making that happen. Made up of mothers, grandmothers and legal guardians with children serving in the armed forces, Blue Star Mothers is a national organization with

more than 200 chapters and 6,000 members across the United States. Founded in 1946 during World War II, the group has worked for more than a century to provide support for our armed forces via various volunteer efforts aimed at serving active service members and veterans. They take their name from the flags that were originally displayed in the windows of soldiers’ families during World War I, with each blue star representing a member of the household currently serving.

Blue Star Mothers remains as active as ever, fundraising throughout the year to raise money and support the troops. In fact, their Oregon chapter is planning to hold an event in late June to raise funds for care packages to be sent to sixty local soldiers who will soon be sent out on their first deployments.

Blue Star Mothers’ Oregon chapter has worked frequently in the past with other groups like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, and several local churches to raise money for these care packages, which they send twice a year: once during the summer and another around Christmas. They’ve previously held fundraising events at Columbia Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, Washington, and Pomeroy Living History Farm in Yacolt; they are still finalizing where this summer’s fundraising event will take place.

The fundraiser will be open to the public, and volunteers are welcome. If you have a loved one serving in the military, Blue Star Mothers would be happy to have you. Even if you don’t, the organization is happy to take on associate members. With three to four thousand soldiers from the tri-state area alone expected to be deployed during 2024, Blue Star Mothers is grateful for all the help it can get in making sure local troops are cared for and supported from home.

If you’d like to learn more about Blue Star Mothers, you can find their website at bluestarmothers.org. If you’re interested in learning more about the Oregon chapter or their upcoming fundraising events, you can contact Vice President Geri Stuart at one4maus@gmail.com.

most realistic, imaginative video games for both consoles and streaming platforms, many enthusiasts are increasingly looking to the past for a familiar, relaxing and affordable gaming experience.

With the dizzying array of tantalizingly new games out there, complete with ultra-high definition graphics and immersive music and storylines, the rising popularity of old low-tech games with pixelated graphics and simplistic controls is a bit of a head-scratcher. In order to wrap one’s mind around this curious phenomenon, it’s important to understand what the term “retro game” refers to. In gaming parlance the term “retro gaming” instantaneously evokes primitive but charming 8-bit graphics, intuitive straightforward gameplay that is addictive and challenging, yet is, at its core, innately simple.

The heyday of these retro games was back in the 70s and 80s when the internet was still a dream, and words like “cell phone” and “streaming” had not yet entered the common lexicon.

experience was to play these games standing up on arcade machines located in pizza parlors, convenience stores and malls across America.

For those of us who grew up during this era the nostalgia factor is immense. As the world continually grows faster and more complex, there is a certain comfort in the return to something familiar. Engaging again with the graphics, sounds and challenges of these simple games has the ability to evoke the past, like a time capsule transporting one back to the days of their youth. Whether rescuing the princess in the various castles of Super Mario Brothers, zapping fast flowing insects in Centipede or defending humanity from invaders from outer space in Galaxian or Space Invaders, engaging once again with these simple yet thrilling games is like reacquainting oneself with an old friend.

Another lure of retro games is their simplicity. Unlike contemporary video games whose complexity often mirrors real life, retro games offer a binary experience that requires minimal decision making and strategizing. In a world where everevolving technology demands increasing levels of expertise and knowledge,

the straightforward gameplay of retro games can be a refreshing change of pace. Basic hand/eye coordination and reaction time are typically the skills required in retro games, versus the detailed storylines and game mechanics common to today’s popular titles.

Aside from nostalgia and relaxing game play, the affordability of retro gaming is also appealing. The expense of today’s popular titles creates a strain on the pocketbook for budget-minded individuals. The inexpensive price of retro games — frequently bundled together at minimal cost — creates a democratizing effect, wherein the vast majority of gamers can afford to participate, rather than only the hardcore few willing to shell out significant dollars to stay up to date on the latest and greatest new releases.

Finally, one cannot discount the aesthetic appeal of retro games with their pixelated graphics and jaunty chiptune soundtracks that impart a certain charm to these old titles. While highly orchestrated

musical scores and jawdropping HD visuals are indeed impressive from a technical standpoint, there are times when simple equates to good. In a sense, retro games are the comfort food of the video game industry. While gourmet cuisine can be an amazing culinary experience, there are times when you simply desire a good old burger and fries. Leaning over a classic arcade machine, joystick in hand, is a completely different experience to gaming online via the latest PlayStation or Xbox console wearing a headset and communicating in realtime with players around the globe. So how has the recent resurgence in retro game popularity affected the gaming industry?

arcade establishments also double as restaurants serving food and beverages to hungry gamers as they strive to save the world from galactic invaders or guide Pacman through a labyrinth of hungry ghosts.

As one might expect, the surging popularity of retro video games has spurred demand for old gaming consoles. The resale market on sites such as eBay for vintage Atari, Nintendo, and Sega Genesis consoles has exploded as the younger generation of gamers discovers these old classics, and Boomers reengage nostalgically with the favorite games of their youth. The demand for retro game

The surging demand for retro games has manifested itself in a myriad of ways, from the creation of small hand-held arcade machines for gamers on the go to the digital remastering of classic retro titles. Game designers are also incorporating visuals, sound effects, and game mechanics from the old retro titles and developing new games that capture the essence of these timeless originals. In cities across the globe the burgeoning demand for retro video games has spawned arcade establishments catering to gamers wishing to play the old classics standing up, on machines like those of their youth. Often these new

in lockstep with the demand for the old consoles and games cartridges, driving a craze for all things retro gaming. No matter what your age or level of gaming experience — Baby Boomer to Gen Z, avid gamer to newbie – retro video games have something to offer everyone. Whether you grew up in the 70s or 80s and seek a nostalgic blast to the past, or hail from a more recent generation, the realm of retro gaming is a wonderful respite from the complexities of our modern life—digital comfort food for the soul!

PNW fashion causes a stir

Whoever said Oregon isn’t a fashion hub clearly hasn’t seen us strut our stuff!

Sure, we might not have the Eiffel Tower of Fashion, but with Nike, Columbia and Adidas in our corner, plus a squad of talented indie designers, we are basically the trendsetters of the Pacific Northwest. And let’s be real — does it even matter if Vogue hasn’t discovered us yet?

Lately, our local style mavens have been causing a stir at the China US Fashion Week in LA. Diane Peralta, Jenny and Lillian Chen are our homegrown heroes, painting masterpieces on fabric and turning heads on the runway. The audience went wild for their creations, proving that Oregonians know a thing or two about style.

China US Fashion Week isn’t just about strutting in stilettos — it’s about bridging cultures and supporting emerging talent. Even American fashion royalty like Nicole Miller showed up to flex their design muscles. One lucky piece even fetched a cool $5k at auction, all for a good cause.

But the real stars of the show? People like the managing director of wealth management, senior portfolio manager at UBS Financial Service Evans Lam and outstanding woman award winner Phoebe Chen, who are using their financial savvy to uplift models like African-refugee-turned-model Nyanwiy Deng, who went from a chicken meat factory to the catwalk. Talk about a Cinderella story!

And let’s not forget the boss lady herself, The Honorary Chairwoman of China US Fashion Week, Yue Sai Kan, the OG influencer of China. From dating Ted Turner to launching her own cosmetic empire. (Turner dated her before he wed Jane Fonda in the ’90s, what a small world.) Now, she’s spreading her wisdom through her One World Foundation, bringing cultures together one chic event at a time.

I’ve been pulling strings to get Yue Sai Kan to grace Portland with her presence this August. Trust me, you won’t want to miss her. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on her book tour and a chance to meet the legend herself.

Hit up kerryyu@mac.com for all the deets, and check out www. chinausfashionweek.com for the full scoop. Let’s show the world that Oregon’s got style for days!

Legacy of the Land

Family-owned

Christmas tree farm & a historic barn

On a dry day in Oregon City back in 1907, the community came together for a momentous event at the farm of Frederick and Martha Heilman. Friends and neighbors arrived in horse-drawn wagons from all directions, gathering for the barn raising. The farmer’s youngest daughter Dorothea was five years old at the time, and though her mother kept her at a safe distance, she eagerly helped carry the picnic lunch out to the men at mealtime. She watched with fascination as they used the timber they’d gathered from the surrounding land to build a magnificent post and beam structure.

Frederick passed away during the Great Depression, and when Martha couldn’t make the payments after his death, she walked away from the farm. It returned to the original lienholder, except for a small chunk of land sold to Dorothea and her husband. Over 50 years later, Dorothea’s grandson William Keyser and his wife Susan decided to buy the farm, unaware it was originally their family’s property. “No one ever really talked about it,” says Susan. “But when we told Dorothea we were putting in an offer, she brought out old photos of her parents sitting in the yard with the barn in the background and her as a teenager riding a mule.”

William and Susan purchased the property in 1986 to start a Christmas tree farm. They planted their first crop of trees that year

and Merrywood Farm was born. Since then, it’s become a yearly destination for countless families who want to experience the holiday magic of taking a trip to the farm to pick out a Christmas tree. As for the Keysers, the whole family comes together to help run the operation. “William does most of the work year-round and doesn’t hire any help,” Susan explains, “but when it’s time to sell trees, our kids and grandkids chip in.”

Merrywood Farm grows several varieties of trees with all the standard offerings, including the traditional Douglas Fir, the Grand Fir and Nobles. The favored is the Nordmann Fir, which is very similar to the Noble in appearance but has an extended needle retention, making it the perfect tree to bring into the house. “They thrive in Oregon,” says Susan. “Nobles are more temperamental and don’t like our soil, so the Nordmann has been quickly replacing the Noble as our most popular tree.” Trees start at $30 and are priced by a grading system that factors in height, species and other traits.

During the season, which typically starts the Friday after Thanksgiving, visitors can borrow saws for U-Cut and wander the tree fields, finding their ideal tree that looks beautiful from all angles. Merrywood provides twine for securing the tree to a vehicle and has a mini-baler for smaller trees. Pre-cut trees are available as well. “William gathers a large selection of freshly cut trees and brings them up to our higher land,” Susan explains. “Not everyone wants to trek through the mud.” Guests are invited to grab a free cup of hot cider or purchase a handmade wreath as they head home to start decorating. On the weekends, customer’s kids can take a short ride on Toby, a 30-year-old pony who lives on the farm.

Merrywood Farm loves being a part of tradition.

“It’s fun to see the returning customers who come with their kids, and they share memories of when they were little and rode the first ponies,” Susan says. “We love seeing the familiar faces, and many become just like old friends.”

In 2007 the Merrywood barn celebrated its 100th birthday, and the Keysers cleaned up the inside and created a barn museum with antique farm equipment and photographs of the property through the years. It was formerly used as a dairy barn and the old milking parlors are set up just like the old days. “It’s fun to share the history and lore of an old barn with the community,” Susan says. “It makes me hope people will take away an admiration for these old barns and put efforts into keeping them instead of tearing them down.”

The Keyser’s oldest daughter and her husband bought Grandma Dorothea’s house, and they’ve been raising their three boys on the land that’s been in the family for well over 100 years. “The kids have been playing here since they were little, catching crawdads in the creek and building forts,” says Susan. “It’s pretty wonderful to have kept it in the family.”
