eople looking for really amazing and authentic Mexican food have quite the challenge finding that in the Portland Metropolitan area. While there are certainly a lot of good restaurants, not many of them can be called great, and even fewer offer food that is truly authentic. If you’re one of those who’s still hunting for the best of the best when it comes to Mexican cuisine, then I’m very excited to introduce you to Corona Mexican Restaurant here in Lake Oswego!

Owners Valentin and Rocio Soltero are the real deal. Valentin grew up in Mexico and spent many years working for his father, who owned a restaurant there. In 1996, at the age of 18, he moved to Oregon and tested the waters in other career fields before realizing he wanted to continue in his father’s footsteps.

Other family members were already living in different parts of Oregon, many of them working in the food industry, so it wasn’t difficult to move back into the industry he so loved. For several years, Valentin worked for those other family members (especially in Scappoose where his family owns Ixtapa) and learned the ropes of running a restaurant in the states before opening his own place.

In 2014, the perfect opportunity presented itself and with the financial help of his brothers, he and his wife took the plunge!

Although the location had previously served as another Mexican restaurant (Azteca) when they purchased it, Valentin and his wife wanted to make some changes so they could truly call it their own. There was a lot of work to do to bring the place up to their standards, but it paid off. Now when you walk in, it’s immediately evident that they’ve taken great care to infuse the place with a warm, welcoming and unique atmosphere. It’s not like every other Mexican restaurant, and that was their intent.

The menu is equally as appealing. While most of the items they serve are similar to what you find on other menus, it’s the way that everything is prepared that makes it so special. Everything on the menu is made fresh and in-house, from scratch every day! The only thing that isn’t currently made from scratch is their tortillas, but 4 • LAKE OSWEGO LIFE/STYLE • AUGUST 2021

Valentin intends to eventually incorporate that as well; it’s actually a lengthy process and difficult to find people who can do it efficiently.

That said, their food is as fresh as it can be and the chef, Margarito Medina is the kind of guy who lives for his work.

He’s there 6 days a week, a lot of times from open until close, and he absolutely loves what he does. He is also from Mexico, and prides himself on presenting and sharing the authentic food of his culture.

Favorite selections include their Fajitas, Carne Asada, Chicken a la Diabla, and many of their seafood dishes. The Fajitas are prepared in the traditional cooking style handed down for generations in Mexico. Served with marinated strips of beef, chicken, pork, or shrimp, and grilled to perfection with fresh bell peppers, onions. They are served sizzling hot, along with tomatoes, spices, guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. The Carne Asada consists of a delicious skirt steak, broiled in their very special, hush-hush, top-secret way, and topped with fried onions and a side of guacamole. Chicken a la Diabla is an incredible dish that is sauteed in butter with onions, mushrooms, and spicy red sauce.

Their shrimp and seafood dishes number too many to list, but they are all fresh and fantastic!

Given that they are such an authentic restaurant, I asked Valentin what are some of the favorites among patrons who come from

Mexico. He said that their Molcajete Mexicanos and their 7 Mares are both extremely popular. The Molcajete Mexicanos is a combination of carne asada, grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, cactus leaf, and sausage.

This is served on a traditional hot molcajete stone with homemade salsa, fresh Mexican cheese and avocado.

The 7 Mares is a seafood soup with shrimp, crab, scallops, octopus, calamari, fish, clams, potatoes, carrots, and celery, with a side of onions, cilantro, tomato, avocado, and lime.

Just listing the ingredients makes me want to drop what I’m doing and head straight over!

Of course, no Mexican restaurant is complete without some amazing drinks, and Corona Mexican Restaurant is no exception.

Their margaritas are to die for, especially the Jalapeno Margarita, which is Valentin’s favorite! They also have fantastic Mojitos and Micheladas, a spicy, intensely-flavored, traditional Mexican drink made with beer, lime juice, assorted sauces, spices, tomato juice, and chile peppers.

Valentin wants everyone to know how grateful he was for the support of the community during the shutdowns.

He says there is no way they could have survived if it hadn’t been for the people who kept ordering from them, even when they couldn’t provide onsite dining. He’s also thankful for the wonderful crew he works with every day: Rocio and their two sons, as well as Margarito and his extended crew.

Without them, there is no way the restaurant could have survived.

So it is with tremendous gratitude and humility that Valentine and Rocio invite everyone back into the restaurant for full-capacity, on-site dining, or to enjoy their newly-added patio for outdoor seating. Over the past year, students have become quite familiar with online schooling, many of which have experienced a hybrid form. With the new school year just around the corner, many students are eager to go back in person. This year, beginning September 8th, the Lake Oswego School District will officially begin its Fall term. It will be so exciting for students to once again be able to not only learn in-person with their peers, but also participate in the various extracurricular activities offered.

Let’s take a look at the Fall fashion. Vibrant colors are back.

Yellow will be a favorite for the season, along with pink, green, and of course blue, which seems to have always been the color of choice. Colorful outfits make people happy, which is something we really need right now. Let’s wear some vibrant colors to bring joy, energy and happiness to ourselves and each other. It all began when Jim and Marla Zupancic recognized a need and an opportunity to build a family-friendly community facility where like-minded individuals could come to be and stay active, have a little fun, and make new friends. The idea was as simple as that, but what is simple in concept is not always simple in its actualization.

It took years of research and planning, traveling all over the world and studying the most elite resort spas and clubs to determine exactly how best to turn their dream into a reality. In 2012, all that hard work finally paid off and Stafford Hills Club opened.

Sadly, the journey proved to be an incredibly taxing one and it took its toll. As we are all beginning to learn, constant stress can have seriously deleterious effects on the body, and just before the facility was set to open, Jim had a massive heart attack. It’s okay; fortunately he recovered, and with their focus now shifted towards living a more active lifestyle, he is doing better than ever. His life is a testament to the power of healthy living!

Jim and Marla are still heavily involved in the daily operations of the business, but with a health scare of that magnitude, their son Evan decided he wanted to be a part of the picture. Wanting to be closer to his folks, but also wanting to help out at the club and alleviate some of his father’s stress, he started working there in a modest capacity. He quickly discovered, however, that it was a natural fit for him. He was athletically-motivated, had a background in business, and the perfect temperament to work with such a varied clientele.

Within a year he’d been promoted to Chief Operating Officer, then General Manager, and still holds both titles to this day.

Evan is incredibly proud of what his family and their whole team there at the club have been able to accomplish, and with good reason. Not satisfied to build “just another athletic club,” they’ve constructed a first-class facility consististing of all LEED certified buildings (signifying that they are all energy-efficient, environmentally-responsible, and sustainable

structures). They also have beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens, giving the feeling of a five star resort rather than an athletic facility. Additionally, they have one of the premier tennis clubs in the Northwest, with top-notch pro instructors and 10 world-class courts (7 indoor and 3 outdoor).

Refreshing Summer Drinks Hot summer weather means we need to stay hydrated! Make sure to drink plenty of water, of course, but when you want something more flavorful, try out some of these ideas to keep things interesting.

WATERMELON LEMONADE:

CUCUMBER MINT GLOW WATER

DOLE WHIP LEMONADE

Combine half watermelon juice and half lemonade.

To make it even more fun, freeze watermelon chunks ahead of time to use in place of ice cubes. They won’t water down your drink, and you have a snack once they thaw!

In a pitcher, mix 3 cans of seltzer with slices of cucumber and lemon, then add 3 sprigs of mint.

Stir/muddle to release more flavor.

So refreshing!

In a blender combine 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 cup lemonade, and 1/2 cup coconut milk.

Blend until smooth, then pour and serve immediately.

A

s a resident of Lake Oswego for nearly 14 years, I have been fortunate to experience so many wonderful community events in the area. One of my favorite annual events is the Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market.

I recently learned that the Saturday market was established in 2001 and inspired by European styles, bringing back the old memories of the time I spent in Spain.

Market decreased to almost half the size, while this year’s numbers have rebounded to two thirds of the original vendors. I am hopeful that next year we will be able to bring back all of the usual vendors. I will be excited to see the wonderful array of local produce, delicious food, incredible music by local artists, and much much more.

The Farmers’ Market is a place to see and be seen. One should be impressed by how fashionable people are when attending the Farmers’ Market. In my experience, my The Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market involvement in the fashion industry has is ideally located between a beautiful Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market allowed me to appreciate the unique variety view of the lake and access to various May 8- Oct 2, 2021 8:30am-1:30pm of fashion exhibited by both Lake Oswego boutiques and restaurants. Over the subsequent years, they’ve expanded their original model to include tenant improvements, as well as interior renovations and design. In fact, that’s the kind of work they get really excited about!

Travis stated that full remodels and additions are the best, where they are able to completely gut a room, take it down to the studs, and rebuild it from the ground up. With new additions, obviously, there is no demolition stage, but it’s extremely satisfying for them to be able to walk you through every stage of the project: from the design, to the construction, all the way through to completion.

That’s one of the things they pride themselves most on: walking you through every step of the process. Because they are a one-stop-shopping operation, Travis and Mindy are the people you will be dealing with throughout. They are the ones making initial contact with you to discuss and collect information regarding the specifics of the project. They are the ones who write the estimate. Travis and his team come to your house to do the majority of the work themselves (with the only exception being those cases where they have to hire subcontractors for certain aspects of the job). And they are the ones who continue to communicate with you until the job is complete and you are 100% satisfied.

There’s no need to concern yourself with logistics, scheduling, and mounting costs; no need to worry that the job is going to be left half-finished while they run off with your money.

Travis, Mindy, and the team are not only the most skilled and knowledgeable people in the area, they are also the most honest and trustworthy people you could possibly imagine. They are truly local, both born and raised here, and their reputation in the business is their most prized and protected asset. In fact, their reputation is so strong that they’ve grown their business these past ten years with no advertising at all! Word of mouth and repeat customers was all they needed to maintain their momentum.

Travis and Mindy are the salt of the earth, people of integrity, and they love to give back to the community as much as they receive. Mindy coaches many of the local school sports teams while Travis provides assistance to those he sees in need.

Particularly during the Christmas season, he has been known to “spread cheer” by donating and installing lights for those who were unable to do it themselves. The company also donates annually to the Chelsea Hicks Foundation, a wonderful non-profit organization that helps seriously ill children.

A

ccording to the Oxford Dictionary, integrity is defined as “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.” It can also mean “the condition of being unified, unimpaired, or sound in construction.” In the case of Foundations First Northwest in Lake Oswego, both definitions of the word apply. They run their business with moral integrity, and they work to provide your foundation with structural integrity as well!

It’s unfortunate, but when it comes to construction contracting, integrity is more often the exception than the rule. The upside for those who possess real integrity, however, is that opportunities abound! Co-owners and founders Joe Smith and Mike Burrows have fully recognized this opportunity and are providing honest, exceptional, and customer-focused service in an industry that is not necessarily known for these qualities.

Joe has been doing construction since he started framing at age 14 and Mike has also been in the business for over 20 years now. With their combined experience, they’ve pretty much seen and done it all. CLACKAMAS COUNTY FAIR AND RODEO

n a lot of ways, the overall state of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center could be summed up in six words: “The fair is on for 2021!”

Actually, a lot of events are returning to the fairgrounds this year, along with a few new ones that relocated there for this year, including the Cutsforth’s Cruise-In Car Show and Junk Refunk Street Market. But the true marker of success for the area’s summer events calendar was always going to be the beloved County Fair Clackamas County’s largest annual event, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the state.

The Fair Board voted unanimously to move forward with the County Fair and Rodeo in June, based on the recommendation of Fairgrounds Executive Director Laurie Bothwell that the board move forward.

“I’ve done a lot of fairs,” Bothwell said. “We have been through 100-degree weather that wasn’t budgeted or expected… And we have survived. I think we can survive this very easily. I think it would be a big mistake to not move forward with both the fair and rodeo. The phone is ringing off the hook for both.”

This year’s fair will include the traditional talent show and other entertainment, with a larger and slightly modified carnival that may offer tickets based on a certain time window rather than number of rides. The Pioneer Village is also coming back, and will be bigger and better than ever.

The level of excitement for this year’s fair, in and even outside the community, is unlike anything Bothwell and her team have seen.The Rodeo Board had also made the decision to move forward with the annual rodeo, citing the event’s importance to the community.

The rodeo has become a beloved tradition in Clackamas County.

Board member Todd Gary says, “It’s been a tradition for a long time, and there’ve been some really, really great people over the years who have poured so much into this rodeo. It’s almost unbelievable. And that’s really what’s at the heart of this event.”

The fair is a cherished annual event dating back more than a century in Clackamas County, having been held annually since 1907 — with the only exceptions being cancellations in 1917-18 during World War I, 1942-45 during World War II, and 2020.

A slew of other events and attractions are also returning to the fairgrounds later this year. The Cutsforth’s Cruise-In, a popular grassroots showcase of hot rods, classic cars and other unique roadsters, will be back at the fairgrounds on August 28th.

And the Clackamas County Scare Fair, a drivethru attraction that drew thousands to the fairgrounds during the pandemic last fall, will be returning through October.

Last year, the first-of-its-kind attraction combined the talents of some of Oregon’s top haunted houses and production companies, including Fearlandia, Davis Graveyard, The Nightmare Factory and Creatures of the Night. It was a huge success and I’m sure we’re all thrilled to have it back again this year!

The Country Christmas Bazaar will also be held late in the fall,

from November 8th through the 13th, followed by the Clackamas County Winter Fair, another holidaythemed, drive-thru attraction that debuted in 2020.

This will be open from December 2nd through Christmas Eve. The Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo will be held August 17th-21st at the county fairgrounds in Canby. Tickets may be purchased online at clackamascountyfair.com.

Ticket prices for the fair will be $10 for adult fair entrance, and $5 for children between the ages of 7-12 and seniors age 65-74. Children 6 and younger and seniors 75 and older get in free! Tickets for the rodeo are as follows: (Tues-Thurs) $10 general seating, $12 reserved, $13 grandstand, $20 bullpen; (Fri-Sat) $12 general, $13 reserved, $15 grandstand, $25 bullpen.

How The Oswego Heritage Council Began

I

n the spring of 1939 the world was on the cusp of WWII and Americans were slowly emerging from 10 years of economic hardship known as the Great Depression. Here in Lake Oswego, a Portland writer named Sara Wrenn was collecting Sara Wrenn stories from local old-timers as part of a WPA project titled Oregon Folklore Studies.

The descendant of pioneers, Sara was a well-traveled, talented, and rather stylish writer who had spent much time reporting from the Far East.

to the river, where “It ‘ad wide porches, out over the river, and a body could get most anything to drink.” Macadam Avenue (more familiar to us now as route 43) is today a busy thoroughfare. It was the first black-topped road linking Lake Oswego to Portland, reportedly built to give easy access to Portland businessmen and politicians to the bars, gambling houses and houses of ill-repute that lined the Willamette River.

The establishment famously burned to the ground in late June 1904, prompting an informative and perhaps unintentionally humorous description of the event: From Lancashire to Oswego - the Irving family Robert James Irving was born in Colne, Lancashire, England, in 1833. The son of a cotton weaver, he eventually made his way to America in the spring of 1860. Settling first in Massachusetts, he then made his way west to San Francisco and by 1868 had continued moving up the coast to settle in Portland. By the mid 1870s Robert Irving was successful enough to finally bring to Portland his wife and children, including son and future interview subject, James, who had been born in the autumn of 1860, a number of months after his father set sail for America.

One of her interview subjects that April was a long time local resident named James Robert Irving at his home on Boones Ferry Road. Included as part of the report was a description of the interior and exterior of the house as well as biographical information about Mr. Irving himself.

The senior Irving tried his hand at more than one venture, including real estate speculation in Portland’s early days.

By 1891 he had made enough money selling soap and turning over land to build a stunning mansion in Victoria, British Columbia, on a plot he had purchased two years earlier. Perhaps he yearned to live in a place more familiar and welcoming to a British immigrant – or maybe he just fell in love with the area. He was certainly flush since the newspapers reported the home had cost $40,000.00 to build – big money in 1891. Gisburn House sat smack dab in the middle of the Rockland area of Victoria and its beauty even made the news here in Portland.

When he passed away in 1911 he had been blind since the late 1890s, and perhaps that precipitated the sale of the

Mary would go on to serve on Oswego City Council for eight years and was the champion who led the winning battle to save the great Sequoia tree that lights up downtown every Christmas from the Safeway parking lot on Avenue A.

mansion in Victoria as well as his return to live in the Portland area where he settled with his son, James, at his home at 12801 Boones Ferry Road in Oswego. Following his death, a large group of investors purchased 35 acres from his estate near where the Pittock mansion now sits for a very tidy $100,000.00.

After farming for a number of years Son James eventually settled into retirement at the home in Oswego. James Robert Irving passed away in 1947. Following his death, his widow sold the home and surrounding acreage to a Portland dentist named Edward Hall. Dr. Hall’s widow and descendants would continue to live there for the next 20 years until the property again changed hands for the last time.

PART II – WHO WAS MARY GOODALL?

Mary Vincent Holmes Goodall was the daughter of Edith M. Knight, the first woman on The Oregonian news staff, who went by the pen name Marian Miller.

Like her mother, Marian also took a pen name and became a writer for local newspapers. In Mary Goodall the 1940’s the Goodall family moved to the outskirts of Lake Oswego and Mary threw herself into the social life and activities the community offered. Eventually she researched and published a history of Lake Oswego, entitled Oregon’s Iron Dream: A Story Of Old Oswego And The Proposed Iron Empire Of The West.

In her final statement at the end of her interview (which can be found in full in the library’s book titled “In Their Own Words – A Collection of Reminiscences of Early Oswego, Oregon”) Mary Goodall throws down the gauntlet for future preservationists, historians and citizens of our city: “If we don’t respect our pioneers and our heritage, how can we expect our children that are growing up to have respect, patriotism, any of these things, if we old-timers do neglect it?”

PART III – SAVING HISTORY

By early 1970 the city was steadily growing, with many new neighborhoods springing up or expanding all over the city.

One of the biggest projects not only here but in Oregon itself was Carl Halvorson’s Mountain Park Development, but there was one obstacle standing in the way of his plans: the century-old Irving Farm.

Building upon her success saving the trees in front of the Safeway on Avenue A, Mary Goodall took up the challenge to save the Irving house from demolition. Though she fought valiantly, the efforts eventually failed, and the structure was demolished in the autumn of 1970. However, this early fight to preserve the history of Lake Oswego resulted in the formation of the Oswego Heritage Council just a year later, which let to the salvation of many other historic structures in the area, including that of a pioneer home on Carman Drive, a property that may be familiar to most current city residents.

J

eff spends his days painting in a studio on a Chehalem Mountain ridge in Cornelius, which he shares with his wife Toni, who does ceramics work.

Interestingly, it took two hairpin career changes to get there.

The original plan was to play the piano, so he got formal training in composition at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Then, he spent the next 30 years as a firefighter before retiring as a Hillsboro fire marshal in 2005.

Then came the Rothko. For a full half hour in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, he stood in front of a painting by the legendary painter, “transfixed.” Toni suggested that if he loved it so much he should paint himself. He’s been doing so for ten years - all the while listening to music, his first love.

The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity: How do you get your ideas or inspiration for a piece?

“I think a lot about color, shapes, and the sequence of making a piece. Concepts just assemble in my head. Occasionally I have a complete vision & some of my best stuff comes then. Generally, it’s an interactive process. Accidents are the path to original work. In other words, I paint over stuff a lot. What I don’t do is paint ideas or messages or intend meaning. I do it to please myself.”

Describe the process of making a painting, from start to finish.

started doing something. It was the way I learned what I could do. Nowadays I have some concept either hazy or formed, colors being the first concern. As I’ve gained more control over what I want, I take more time, work in layers and try to discipline myself to not work too fast.

Paintings now take a week or more.”

Do you listen to music while painting?

“I can’t paint without it. All kinds. From Debussy to Miles Davis, lots of R&B, ambient, Afro-pop, Brazilian and Jon Hassell. I have no doubt it influences the work in some way but it’s subconscious, if it does.”

And you share the space with Toni?

“Toni started doing hand-built ceramics in high school and always wanted to get back to it. She makes dinnerware, vases, nameplates/signs and is looking for new niches to work. Toni still has a full-time job but will retire in a couple years, and her business plan for Crusty Eye Ranch Studios is our future.”

Things To Do In Lake Oswego

Willamette Shore Trolley

“Clang, clang, clang, went the trolley!” Immortal words sung

by Judy Garland in The Trolley Song from the 1944 musical, Meet Me In St. Louis. It’s a song familiar to many, as it went on to earn an Academy Award nomination for best song in 1945. That “clang” is also a sound familiar to many who’ve spent any time in downtown Lake Oswego, since we are lucky enough to have our very own historic replica trolley which runs from N State Street into Portland.

The right-of-way the trolley uses was established back in the late 1800’s by the Portland and Willamette Valley Railway and initially ran around Elk Rock on a long trestle. The trestle was replaced in 1921 by what is now known as the “party tunnel” (because of all of the graffiti and partying that takes place there).

Interestingly, the purpose for the tunnel was to avoid all of the falling rocks the railroad had to contend with going around the outside of Elk Rock. One of those rocks punched through the headliner of a car and landed in a passenger’s lap! She was alright, fortunately, but an alternative route became imperative.

Passenger service continued on the line through 1929 but then switched to freight. It remained a freight line all the way up until 1983 when the line was abandoned. Seeking to maintain the line for possible future mass transit, a consortium of local government entities was formed. On behalf of this consortium, the line was leased in 1987 with an option to buy.

To gauge interest in such an operation, a heritage streetcar service was temporarily put into service and operated by the Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society. It was such a success that the line was purchased a year later, began regular seasonal service in 1990, and is still running today!

The trolley itself is a gorgeous steel-framed Brill model built

by Gomaco Trolley Co. in 1991. The seat frames are cast from authentic molds and the woodwork around the interior of the car is absolutely stunning. Over the years, other trolley cars (including an old double-decker made in England) have shared the line, and they are currently having one of

their other cars upgraded to electric. They are always upgrading and improving for the comfort and enjoyment of passengers.

Perhaps the most compelling piece of this story, however, is the man behind the operation himself: David Harold.

He has been doing this since 1999, and for the past 4 years he has been both conductor and General Manager.

Born and raised in Oregon, David is an encyclopedia of local knowledge and he knows this area like the back of his hand. He loves sharing all of his fun and interesting stories with riders, and it’s obvious that he has a sincere affection for both the role he plays and the clientele he serves. His tales are enthralling, and he’s no stranger to surprising locals with wonderful trolley trips, such as the time he invited a wedding party aboard for photos, or when he took a group of 22 kids and 6 adults on a free impromptu birthday party ride.

Come on down to meet David and ride the trolley for a fun and educational experience, or charter the trolley for any number of events! During special occasions like Christmas you won’t want to miss the Tinseltown Trolley, or watch fireworks from the trolley on July 4th. They are currently only running about half of the nearly 6 mile line due to repairs being done on the trestles, but David more than makes up for the shorter ride with all his enthusiasm and entertaining stories!

CELEBRATING SMILES National Smile Week

T

he second week of August is National Smile Week, an effort that was primarily started as a campaign to focus on dental health. While oral hygiene is of the utmost importance and should not be overlooked, I think that this year in particular (after 18 months of covering our faces), National Smile Week may have acquired an additional layer of significance. How long has it been since we ventured out into public and could clearly see the faces of everyone around us? How many months have we gone without seeing the smiles of the people we interact with on a daily basis? After all of this time, let’s take the opportunity to appreciate the impact that smiling has on our lives, our relationships, and our wellbeing.

First of all, smiling can actually make you happier. We’ve all heard the saying “fake it till you make it,” and smiling is a great example of how this works. Say you’re having a terrible, no-good, very bad day. You can frown your way through it, which will actually make your mood worse, or you can smile. The facial muscles used to smile trigger neurotransmitters in the brain that have the power to make us feel happier. These include the natural antidepressants dopamine and serotonin, as well as endorphins, which help us relax.

Ever heard the old adage that “laughter is the best medicine”? There’s a reason for that. In order to laugh you must smile first, which we already know changes brain chemistry, and when you have more “happy hormones” that directly affects your body. Smiling can not only reduce stress and make us feel happier, but some studies have found that it may also improve our immune systems and help us fight off illness.

Believe it or not, faking a smile when you’re stressed can also help protect your heart. Just as it directly affects the brain, smiling can also reduce the increase in heart rate and breathing that we naturally experience under pressure. So the next time you’re struggling with a difficult situation, rather than letting your frown bring you down, try turning it around! You may be surprised how much better you feel.

Smiling also affects our confidence and sociability. When we smile, we appear more approachable, friendly, relaxed, and (as an added bonus) younger! A genuine smile makes you seem open to others, which in turn makes others want to be around you. Better social interactions and improved relationships are big boosters when it comes to confidence and self esteem.

Not to mention that smiling is contagious! After this last year and a half, that word may not be the most appealing one to use, but it’s true. Thankfully this is the kind of contagion that we want to spread. When interacting with others, we have a natural reaction called “facial mimicry,” meaning that when someone smiles at us, we do the same. When you smile at someone else, they are likely to smile back, and thus gain all the benefits of smiling that were previously mentioned. Smile at someone today and you might just start a mood boosting chain reaction!

There you have it. Smiling is a crucial factor in improving our emotions, our health, and our relationships. Make it a point to smile as much as possible today, and don’t forget to take care of that smile by making regular visits to your dentist! W

ith nothing more than an old used van, a dream and a desire to do great work, a young and eager Scott Bird and his bride Jody, began a journey.

If someone were to ask Scott if he was raised on a farm, he could emphatically reply, “Yes!” He grew up in Mattawa, Washington where he worked with his dad, three brothers and three sisters.

When he was 21, he went to his cousin’s wedding reception. There, catching his eye from the reception line was his future wife, Jody. Their world grew closer since it was Jody’s sister marrying one of Scott’s cousins.

Scott attended Utah Technical College for two years and graduated with a degree in Heating & Air Conditioning. The trade which he would then work in back home in Mattawa. Being back home gave Scott the opportunity to reconnect with Jody and they married in June of 1983.

After about a year of working in the Heating and Air Industry, Scott and Jody decided to return to his family farm. Scott worked with his dad on the farm

during the day and drove a semi-truck at night hauling hay cubes to Seattle. Jody went to work for an insurance company in Othello, Washington.

Jody’s sister and a couple of Scott’s cousins had started a drain cleaning company in Tri-Cities, Spokane and Salem, Oregon. It was going so well that they talked Scott and Jody into leaving the farm and to start their own drain cleaning business in Portland, Oregon.

The Apollo journey: Scott was told by the bank that they didn’t think he was a “good investment.” They were so wrong.

After procuring a bank loan, they were able to start a business of their own. Apollo Drain & Rooter was on it’s way! Their tagline, “Big enough to do the job, but small enough to care” would carry them through many years of hard and difficult work. Using their own apartment as their headquarters and Jody navigating with the large and cumbersome Thomas Guide Map Book, they offered a flat rate of only $26.50, no matter how long it took or how challenging the job was.

Over the years of juggling work, marriage and parenthood the Birds eventually grew to become a family of 5 with 3 energetic boys! In 1985 Scott and Jody were blessed with their first baby boy, Brandon. Brandon was continuously by Jody’s side as she answered phones, scheduled jobs and handled the paperwork.

In 1988 he was followed by little brother Ryan, and in 1990 their son Derek completed their family and the nest was full.

With discipline, hard work and a good sense of humor, the young family survived many ups and downs. Tough economic times challenged their survival in the industry, but they kept going. No matter what challenges they faced, they did so with strength and integrity, always willing to help out their fellow members of the community.

As the Bird boys grew into men, they fully immersed themselves into the family business, which has become one of the fastest growing, full-service plumbing companies in Oregon and Washington. The company of two people has grown to over 50 employees! In 2014 the family became the first in this area to invest in the latest technology of plumbing called Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP). It is their dedication to a growing industry that instilled in them the desire to share this with an area where it is so desperately needed. CIPP, a trenchless lateral drain line repair, is the perfect answer to the root intrusion problem that is so prevalent in the Pacific Northwest. Old pipes are not getting any younger and degradation is a serious problem. Luckily, Apollo is a leader in the installation of LMK’s CIPP technology.

The Bird’s high standards and love of the work are a testament to their trade. They have great appreciation for the community and their continued support because they would not be where they are today without them.
