Rural Internet Co-ops Empower Communities

For Cooperative month this October, let's look at how local co-ops like DirectLink help improve the communities they serve. They provide fast, reliable, and secure internet services to connect residents, businesses, schools, and healthcare professionals. They also buy local which empowers the city’s economy, education, and many industries.

Economic Development

Dependable, quality high-speed Internet, WiFi, and Voice services attract new businesses and developments to the area and retains existing companies.

Education

Reliable broadband access enables remote learning and enhances innovative classroom teaching methods.

Healthcare and Telemedicine

More and more providers offer virtual appointments for patient care. This option is especially beneficial for rural communities with limited healthcare facilities and for those without access to reliable transportation.

Agriculture

Farming is the backbone for many rural communities. The use of modern internet-reliant technologies like temperature and moisture sensors or automatic irrigation systems increase efficiencies and profitability.

Rainy Days Are Here

Making the most of Oregon’s iconic fall weather

It’s October, can you believe it?

Where in the world does time go?

It seems like it was just a few weeks ago we were celebrating the Fourth of July at the Independence Day Parade. Now, we have the kids back in school, the leaves are starting to change color, and the rain is falling.

Today, the rain is most definitely falling. I never thought I would be excited to see precipitation, but as I age — level up, like I tell the younger generation — I find rain to be a very pleasant experience.

Growing up, I always enjoyed the smell after a fresh rain storm in spring, but it wasn’t until recently that I really looked forward to the rain falling this time of year. Maybe it is because it signals the end of the forest fire season? There has certainly been too much of that in our state recently. Or maybe it’s because everything that’s been brown turns green again?

One of my fondest memories was when I was around 11 years old, riding my bike with friends. Suddenly, it started to rain. My

friends rode home to get out of the storm, but I stayed put — I mean, I was already soaked. The exhilaration riding through the puddles remains a memory I hold dear. Having the blacktop to myself and the freedom it represented will be with me forever.

We all have memories from our childhood that stick with us — for better or worse. Personally, I choose to focus on the moments that are happy and innocent.

This fall, don’t let the rain keep you from enjoying the outdoors. It’s also good to remember there are many places where people pray for rain, even dancing with rain sticks. We are so very blessed to have the rainy weather and the opportunity to make wonderful memories in it.

May you never pass up the perfect puddle for splashing good fun.

P.S. If your business services local residents, give me a call at 503-825-2111 to see how partnering with us will put you in the homes of everyone in Canby and Aurora.

FALLING BACK TO THE GYM

When the weather turns iffy, it’s time to get back to the gym! To make the most out of your time at the gym, don’t just do the same machines each time you go, but take advantage of all your gym has to offer:

 Hire a personal trainer. Fall is the perfect time to hire a pro and get your workouts on the right track from day one. Education is power!

 Work out with a buddy. If you don’t like working out by yourself, grab a friend to exercise with you. Knowing you have to show up will keep you motivated, and it’s FUN!

 Keep fitness interesting. If you tend to gravitate to cardio machines, change things up with interval training, which is a

great way to burn calories and get in shape. This is easily done by mixing weights with bursts of cardio.

 Make your exercise habit stick. Making fitness stick is all about momentum and motivation, so if you’re a beginner, start with three days a week and add a walk, run or bike ride outside four days.

 Never skip a day. It’s a mindset, and yes, walking counts. Commit to an hour a day and you’ll never go back.

 Do more if you can, but always do something, and start where you can rather than where you want to be. Ease your body and mind into your new exercise schedule to minimize the risk of injury and add on as you get settled in.

The Irish Legend of Stingy Jack

Old myth illuminates Halloween icon

Ah, autumn, what a wonderful time of year! A time to break out all my favorite sweaters just as the leaves turn into vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red, and, best of all, the arrival of Halloween, my favorite holiday. I have so many fond memories over the years, eating candy all night and wearing costumes to school.

I should mention, my nickname as a kid was “Little Miss Mess Maker,” which means my favorite Halloween activity has always been carving pumpkins, even recreating a horror movie with the guts of a gourd one time. It was epic — the mess, not the movie.

Now, most people carve pumpkins never realizing the myth behind the mess, but my brain likes to know things, so I scooped up the history and discovered “The Legend of Stingy Jack.”

Long ago, in a small Ireland town, a drunkard named Stingy Jack earned his moniker after pinning his bar tab on the Devil himself. Apparently, Jake caused a bit of trouble for his neighbors, so Satan had come for his soul. Now, Jack may have been known for being a drunk — scuttered and bollocksed — but he was also a clever lad, convincing the Devil to take him to his favorite pub as a final request. When the bill came ’round, Jack convinced the demon to turn into a coin, so Jack could pay for his drinks.

However, instead of paying up, Jack dropped the coin into his pocket, alongside a crucifix, trapping the fiery foe. The Devil begged Stingy Jack to release him, and so he did, but only on the condition the Devil would not come for him for another year, and should Jack die, Satan could not claim his soul.

True to his word, the Devil didn’t return for a whole year. When he finally reappeared, Jack convinced Satan to climb a tree to grab a piece of fruit for the journey to Hell. Once the Devil reached the top, Jack carved a cross into the bark of the trunk, trapping the Devil among the branches. Again, Satan begged Jack to free him, but this time, Jack made him promise another 10 years. Of course, the Devil agreed to his terms and was freed.

Upon his death, Jack was denied heaven because of his obvious sins. And because of his trickery and scheming, Satan wouldn’t allow him into Hell either. Instead, the Devil gave Jack a lump of burning

coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved turnip and has been roaming the earth ever since as “Jack of the Lantern,” or Jack-o’-lantern nowadays.

What a guy, am I right? Because of this legend people in Ireland and Scotland started carving scary faces into turnips and potatoes.

C anby’s Greatest Family Restaurant

Steak your claim with great food, craft cocktails, beer and wine

a nice dinner date with steak or prime rib or just grab a burger and some fish tacos,” Travis says. Halibut fish and chips are very popular among other tasty choices, including a half-pound burger with your choice of toppings, classic sandwiches, fresh salads, and hearty pasta dishes. On the higher end, Jarboe’s serves the highestquality proteins cooked to perfection. “With my steakhouse background, it’s important to me to offer the highest quality, prime-grade beef,” Travis explains. In addition to several premium-cut steaks, offerings include a succulent Pork Shank, a rack of lamb topped with chimichurri, miso-glazed grilled salmon, and more! A kid’s menu is available for little ones, and don’t forget about dessert! Choices include cheesecake, chocolate cake, or crème brûlée.

There’s a new restaurant in town, and Canbyites are going crazy for it! Jarboe’s Grill, located off Hwy 99E on the city’s north side, proudly serves up the highestquality steaks and family dining fare, complete with superior customer service and a bright, comfortable atmosphere that celebrates the Canby small-town vibe we all know and love.

Multi-restaurant proprietor Hank Jarboe has owned the property for almost 20 years and leased it to several businesses that mostly ran a roadhouse/bar-type establishment. This time, Hank contacted Travis Sauvain, a Canby native and high-end steakhouse restaurateur who left Oregon over ten years ago to run restaurants in other parts of the country, including Texas, New Orleans, and Montana. He’s known Hank since he was four when he and his family frequented the original Jarboe’s Grill, a Canby staple for nearly 14 years and where Travis and his two brothers landed their first jobs. “I started on my fifteenth birthday as a dishwasher for Hank, so we’ve known each other forever,” shares Travis. “He called and offered to bring me back to partner on the new Jarboe’s. Running a restaurant with the guy who started me in my hometown felt like the ‘perfect world’ situation.”

Jarboe’s lunch and dinner menu has something for everyone, no matter your mood, appetite, or budget. “Guests can have

The cocktail menu features a Smoked Old Fashioned, a Strawberry Rhubarb Moscow Mule, a French 75 they call the Pinky Out, and other delicious options inspired by Travis’s bartending history. In addition to a full bar, the restaurant features an impressive selection of local beer and wine. Customers can choose from 35 locally-made, affordable wines available by the glass or bottle and get 10% off any bottle on Wine Wednesdays! Jarboe’s also hosts a daily happy hour with discounted snacks and a dollar off all draft beer, wine by the glass, and well drinks.

Extensive improvements have been made to the building to create a friendly atmosphere for customers, and more changes are on the horizon. “Hank spent eight months remodeling, adding windows, building a new kitchen, and cleaning things up. We’re going for a warm, home-like environment,” says Travis. “We’ve added a kid’s gaming area and have been working

on redoing the old stage and dance floor so we can offer private dining events but still open it up and offer live music every month.” The next plan is a patio remodel so guests can enjoy outdoor seating in the warmer months.

Jarboe’s is already seeing many regular customers, and Travis is thrilled to be part of the Canby community again. “I never know who’s going to walk

through the door, and it could be friends I grew up with or teachers and coaches I knew in high school,” he says. “I love being part of such an amazing community. There’s been a lot of change, but in a way that has preserved its beauty and identity.”

Travis is committed to creating a dining experience for everyone to enjoy, which includes listening to customer feedback. “We’ve been adapting to what people are asking for and will continue to be fluid to accommodate a little bit of something for everyone,” he says. “Can you come here and have a great date night? Absolutely. But you can also bring your six kids and let them run around in the game area while you eat. We’re aiming for a welcoming space for the community.”

So, whether you’re a Canby local or passing through town on 99E, visit Jarboe’s Grill and come ready for incredible eats and libations, served in a fun and family-friendly venue owned and operated by Canby’s own!

Jarboe’s Grill is located at 22842 S Hwy 99 E in Canby. They’re open Sun-Wed 11AM-9PM, Thur-Sat 11AM10PM, and daily Happy Hour is 3-6PM. To view their menu, check out their website at jarboesgrill.com or give them a call at (503) 592-9057.

“MEAT

THE VETERAN

It’s easy, in a cynical world, to keep our heads down, handsin-pockets, and ignore everyone and everything around us. We often struggle to simply acknowledge those we pass on the street, even our neighbors, and it’s a shame. Canby is teeming with real people who have real stories to tell; compelling stories of genuine heroism; people like 93-yearold US Army veteran Byron Schriever.

If you are not fortunate enough to count Byron and his wife (of 70-plus years) Dorothy as friends, do yourself a favor next time you see them in town, and take a moment to become acquainted. Born and raised right here in the Portland Metro area, Byron graduated from Molalla High School before going on to Oregon State and entering the ROTC program. During his junior year, the Korean War began, and he was drafted into active duty.

Byron was deployed to Korea in January of 1954, entering the war as a Combat Engineer assisting with the movement of infantry and artillery units on the battlefield. His team breached obstacles, constructed bridges and roads, and swept mine fields, among other things. One particularly sobering moment came just after his arrival when he was shown a large hole in the ground — the spot where his predecessor had been killed after attempting to disarm a mine.

Following his tour in Korea, and after satisfying his active duty

Byron

obligation, Byron commendably chose to reenlist. He came home briefly, at which point he married Dorothy, and was then stationed in a variety of different locations across the country for training, maneuvers, and finishing his degree. He then spent some time teaching Combat Engineering in Washington D.C. before being sent to Verdun, France (where his father had coincidentally been stationed during WWI).

Returning to the States, he worked as project engineer on a ballistic missile site for a couple of years before attending Senior Officers School in Fort Leavenworth. From 1967-1970, he served as Staff Officer at The Pentagon, and was then sent to Vietnam. Serving first as Commanding Officer of a construction battalion and later as Commanding Officer of a combat battalion, this was where Byron was closest to “the action.” Although the majority of his work was done in the demilitarized zone, there were constant ambushes, and everyone had to remain on high alert.

After the war, Byron spent 18 months in Fort Knox leading a team who tested new engineering and equipment before finally returning home to Oregon. He spent the remainder of his time in the Army as

an advisor to the Oregon Army National Guard, and retired in 1974. So, for 20 years, this gentleman bravely and selflessly served his country, all while somehow managing to earn a degree, maintain a healthy and loving relationship with his wife, and raise four children!

Looking back on his legacy, Byron stated he wouldn’t change a thing. He was proud to serve his country and for the vast majority of it, enjoyed his time. Applying the skills he obtained in the military, Byron went on to have a second career (another 18 years!) as a civilian, working with the Oregon Army National Guard. So, even after “retirement,” he continued to serve!

When people say, “They don’t make them like that anymore,” they are talking about people like Byron Schriever. Intelligent, resilient, stoic, and humble, he is a man whose unwavering determination and grace shine like a beacon of inspiration for the rest of us. Next time you see him in town, take a moment to shake this gentleman’s hand, and thank him for his service.

A Patch of Pumpkin Perfection

Local farm hosts Fall Festival and pumpkin patch

If circumstances prevail, you just might leave the farm or roadside stand with your pumpkin under one arm and a watermelon under the other. Watermelons aside, however, nothing signifies fall quite like pumpkins. Growing over 40 acres of pumpkins in all shapes, textures and sizes to use in decorating, carving jack-o’-lanterns or making pies, you can either venture into the fields and choose your own, or select a pre-picked pumpkin conveniently sorted by variety.

Pumpkins, sunflowers and corn, oh my! Families, farm stands and much more! For Willamette Valley Melon Company, October at the farm means a dawn to dusk self-serve pumpkin patch, overflowing farm stands and the Fall Festival event which brings family and friends together for a unique farm experience. The Company mission, “Grow Stronger Communities. Grow Fresh Food for Our Community. Connect Families to Agriculture,” applies to all aspects of their farming, harvesting and retailing business. A visit to this local Molalla farm or one of their satellite roadside stands will have you walking away with armfuls of farm-fresh produce… and maybe a pumpkin or two!

Although the pumpkin crop “is our largest crop by acreage,” notes Horticultural Director and co-owner Neal Lucht, “we are famous for local watermelon.” Depending on the weather, some years these two crops are obliged to share the October spotlight.

A visit to Willamette Valley Melon Company’s main farm stand, located at 32173 S. Dryland Road in Molalla, offers the largest selection of produce available from the farm May through November. Acorn, butternut and delicata squash as well as popcorn, which is grown, harvested and packaged at the farm, are some of the popular fall selections. The off-site roadside stands are open through October and all stands are self-serve, relying on the honor system for purchases. Chosen at peak season for quality, flavor and freshness, produce at the stands is restocked daily. If you’re interested in a wholesale opportunity, give the office a call at (503)651-3302 (they’re open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or send an email to info@ wvmelons.com.

As a majority woman-owned business, Pamela (Neal’s wife), Finance Director and principal owner, and daughter Lauren Lucht-Lovelace, CEO and company manager with a background in agricultural education and communication, join Neal to complete the ownership team. Looking toward the Fall Festival event on Oct. 14, the team’s declaration, “We love any excuse to have a good time!” rings loud and true throughout the community. Focusing on the festival, HR Manager and CoEvent Coordinator, Darci Abeln, shares some of the details. In addition to the traditional kids’ activities (face painting, pumpkin

FARM FOCUS WILLAMETTE VALLEY MELON COMPANY 18 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

painting, sensory bins, scavenger hunt and hay pyramid), a 5-acre custom designed corn maze and a photo-op Sunflower Walk are likewise featured and included with admission. Tickets are available through the website. Also included on the day of the festival will be an evening “Pumpkin Glow” event. Darci explains, “Attendees will be able to carve pumpkins throughout the day at the festival. These will be added to others already carved and we will

display all the pumpkins together and light them simultaneously at 7 p.m.” Sounds stunning!

Neal, having grown up on Dryland Road raising irrigated crops on a family farm, started a seed and nursery company in 1990 known as North West Transplants with his wife Pamela. When neighboring property came up for sale about 10 years ago, they bought the 100 acres with the goal of bringing “high-quality products directly to the consumer with an emphasis on education,” Neal relates. Willamette Valley Melon Company strives to do just that. Maintaining close ties with the community, in addition to seasonal programs and events, the

Lucht family is a major sponsor for Oregon FFA and a sponsor for Oregon Aglink “Adopt a Farmer” program, which pairs a middle school classroom with a farm or ranch so students can build relationships with farmers and help give a voice to agriculture.

Willamette Valley Melon Company Main Office is located at 32300 S. Dryland Road in Molalla. For information on events or wholesale inquiries call (503) 651-3302 or email info@wvmelons.com. SPF + vitamin C = skincare influencers

How many times have I said wear your SPF everyday, no matter if it’s winter and raining or sunny, or you stay indoors all day. When you couple wearing SPF with vitamin C, it boosts skin protection levels further. By wearing an SPF daily, you are protecting skin from the damaging sun’s UV rays, and when you add in a vitamin C serum, you’re doubling down on multiple skin-protecting and preventative benefits.

We can’t prevent aging all together, but we can protect from environmental damage that accelerates those signs of aging. What do I mean exactly? Do you drive a black or white car? It’s easy to tell how dirty it gets and fast isn’t it? Pollutants and free

radicals are not visible to the eye but float around in the air and land on our skin — like my dirty car example. These free radicals accelerate skin aging, cause cellular damage and, in worst cases, cause skin cancers.

Once they land on the skin, they actually “steal” electrons from nearby atoms in healthy cells setting off a cycle of freeradical creation, which results in the destruction of healthy cells. This destruction looks like redness, dark spots, inflammation, fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of firmness and elasticity. This is also know as photo-aging.

What does vitamin C do and how to use it?

I suggest applying a vitamin-C serum like Epionce Intense Defense Serum, Glo C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops or Glo C-Shield Anti-Pollution Moisture Tint SPF before your moisturizer and before your spf. Studies have shown that SPF only blocks 55% of free radicals produced by sun exposure. By adding vitamin C, it statistically reduces free-radical damage and neutralizes free radicals before they can cause damage. Using SPF or vitamin C alone will not give you full protection, but together they increase your skin’s ability to protect itself and age how it was intended to — not faster!

WE SUPPORT FIDO

Ellison Team Homes regularly partners with FIDO (Friends Involved in Dog Outreach) to bring help to local veterans, seniors and those who are challenged with feeding their pets by providing pet food to ensure that the bond among people and their pet companions remains unbroken.

FIDO, a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization, was founded in 2004 to establish an AniMeals program in partnership with Clackamas County Social Services and Senior Meals programs. The program is modeled after the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter AniMeals program.

To address a growing local need, FIDO created the Dog

Food Bank, which was eventually expanded to provide for feline pet companions, too, thus it is now known as FIDO Pet Food Bank. As of 2022, the nonprofit expanded to include food for small animals, rabbits and birds. The establishment of the Veterans Program and Pet Needs Pantry followed to address and better support our communities. Additionally, FIDO is “on call” to help the community and individuals when emergencies occur.

In 2021, FIDO's programs provided more than 1,068,640 meals and a wide variety of supplies to 13,326 pet companions in need!

Visit fidoanimeals.org to donate today or discover how you can volunteer.

Gassied Up at FOB!

When one thinks of gas and beer, it usually involves the expulsion of it after a cold pint. But for serious tavern owners, such as Steve Puga, gas is central to business. Of course, we’re not talking about flatulence, we’re talking about “beer gas,” a major investment only select bars undertake, such as FOB Taproom.

A mixture of carbon-dioxide and nitrogen, beer gas simply propels beer within a draft system while keeping beer in equilibrium. Bar owners also use beer gas to ensure appropriate carbonation levels. The type of beer will determine the right gas blend to use.

Different styles of beer contain different units of carbonation. For example, carbon-dioxide volumes for stouts range from 1.2 to 1.7 volumes, which would lean more to a nitrogen-mix blended gas. Ales and lagers have carbonation units from 2.2 to 2.8 volumes. Colorful charts

— find them online — detail the various volumes. There’s much to know.

Now, this is way more information than any hophead would need to understand. But beer fans know immediately when those numbers miss the mark, resulting in a pour that‘s flat or over-carbonated.

Because FOB Taproom serves such a variety of beers and ciders, the brand-new installation of a state-of-the-art draft system using beer gas is very exciting news. New lines also add to the excitement, all made possible by Northwest Draft Technicians.

“The result is a smoother, crisper and cleaner beer, allowing each beverage to shine like it was intended,” says Mitch Puga, Steve’s son and beer manager. “Put simply, it’s like vinyl for your beer.”

On that note, stop by FOB Taproom for a perfectly poured pint and help celebrate the new draft system that’s making it happen. Prost!

Escape to the Eerie

Hubbard Halloween haunt serves up frights

Ranked No. 1 in Oregon by Frightfind two years in a row, Milburn’s Haunted Manor is the ultimate backwoods haunt and features two scary attractions, a pumpkin patch, snacks, hot beverages and more. Proceed with caution, especially if you scare easily. This is not your typical haunted house.

Mike Milburn and his wife were lying on a beach in Mexico more than 20 years ago when they decided they needed a vacation money generator and began planning to transform their property into a haunt. They had two kids in the North Marion drama club to use as actors, enough acreage to add multiple attractions and a friend to run food concessions. Now Milburn’s has begun its 21st season and is better and more horrifying than ever!

Milburn’s features two bone-chilling scare experiences that are entirely different and frightening in their own way. The Manor is a classic-style haunted house where you move through a dark and eerie dwelling, hoping you won’t run into Suzie Milburn’s tormented ghost, who long ago murdered her parents and then hung herself. The second attraction is The Dark, which Mike calls “a startle haunt.” Visitors stumble through an almost pitch-dark house with lighting and other effects that hide the murderous zombies and clowns until they’re practically sitting in your lap! After you’ve been adequately terrified, enjoy

fresh-cut curly fries, funnel-fried bacon, hot apple cider and more at the Graveside Grill. Don’t forget to stop at the Moonlit Pumpkin

Patch to pick up your yearly gourd before leaving. Commemorate your experience with a shot at the photo booth. “We’ve created a carnivalstyle atmosphere to make Milburn’s more of a destination,” says Mike.

Mike is an expert in what he calls scareology, the psychology behind the art of frightening people and the proper use of spooking techniques. “Someone who is already jumpy is easy to scare,” he says. “But I can get almost anybody if I can get in their personal space without them seeing me coming. In The Dark, let’s say there’s a picture frame on one side of the hallway, but it’s a drop panel and there’s a ghoul behind it. We put a door on the opposite side of the hallway with an invisible cable that returns to the ghoul behind the picture. When he wiggles that door, people see that and it’s a perceived threat, so they hug the other wall and end up inches away from the ghoul.”

The Manor is theatrical, suspenseful and more like a Hitchcock movie than “Friday the 13th.” “There’s a story that unfolds, and the suspense builds before we finally attack you,” Mike says.

Milburn’s is a far cry from the largevolume haunted houses you’ll find in Portland, and that’s what makes it unique. “It’s not scary if you’re walking in a conga line and can see the group ahead of you,” says Mike. “We have at least 45 seconds between groups, which allows us to create a theatrical, individualized experience for just you and your party.”

Milburn’s is proud to be part of the Halloween holiday for many families. “We’re not just putting on a haunted house; we’re part of their seasonal tradition,” says Mike. “It’s cool to see guests and volunteers come back generationally. I had a student who was going to volunteer, and she said her mom used to scare with us, so they both came, and mother and daughter got to scare in the same room. It’s like things have gone full circle.”

Milburn’s Haunted Manor is located at 11503 Broadacres Road N.E. in Hubbard. Contact them at 503-830-0865 or visit their website at milburnmanor.com.

Playing the Witch Card

While Flair Hardwicke’s grateful for the chance to take over her grandmother’s Kansas bakery after she finally leaves her cheating husband, she won’t be embracing Nana’s fortune-telling side-hustle. Hers is a strictly no-magic operation—until the innocent batch of Tarot card cookies Flair bakes for the town’s Halloween celebration unleashes the power of the family deck, luring Flair’s unpredictable mother to town, tempting Flair’s magic-obsessed daughter, and bringing back Flair’s first love while ensnaring her ex in a curse she can’t break.

The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch

In this retelling of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” some facts are well known: Mrs. Bennet suffers from her nerves, Mr. Bennet suffers from Mrs. Bennet, and all five daughters suffer from an estate that is entailed only to male heirs. But Lydia also suffers from entirely different concerns: her best-loved sister, Kitty, is really a barn cat; and Wickham is every bit as wicked as the world believes him to be — but what else would one expect from a demon? And if Mr. Darcy is uptight about etiquette, that’s nothing compared to his feelings about magic. Most of all, Lydia has yet to learn that for a witch, promises have power.

Insurance agent Kris Sallee guides clients through often confusing process

Let’s get you covered!” says Kris Sallee, Licensed Agent and Sales Leader with HealthMarkets Insurance Agency. Whether you’re looking for individual, Medicare, small business, life or supplemental plans, Kris will take a comprehensive approach to your health coverage needs — at no cost to you. “I’m not just an enroller,” Kris says, “but an advisor to help consumers through transitions in life that affect their health coverage.”

Over the last year, Kris has witnessed the growing need for qualified health insurance agents across the states. “There’s such a great need out there,” she says. Taking up the mantle,

she is busy building her own team of highly qualified, licensed agents who will be assisting with under-65 health plans, as well as Medicare, life insurance and more. Kris is licensed to recruit anywhere in the U.S., but initially, she and her team will be working throughout Oregon and Washington. Clients will be able to participate in virtual meetings through Zoom or attend face-to-face meetings within the regional area.

Heading into fall’s open enrollment, Kris and her team of HealthMarkets agents promise to “show you plans that fit your needs and your budget.” Their clients receive full explanations of the health coverage as well as how the policy works. Kris recognizes how many consumers feel they can handle their own enrollment, but they often become overwhelmed by the process. Your HealthMarkets agents will complete the enrollment process for you and are available throughout the year for any questions or needs that may arise.

For verification on open enrollment dates, please call 503263-8200 or email ksallee@healthmarkets.com.

Moreover, in today’s post-Covid climate, some are expressing concerns about their status or possibly losing Oregon Health Plan altogether due to redetermination of income. If you’re not sure where to turn, as a certified Oregon Health Plan enroller, Kris is here to assist you. Schedule time to review your options and make an informed decision for your 2024 coverage. Kris grew up in Aurora, and though originally from California, she thinks of herself as an Oregonian — she even worked at Columbia Helicopters for a time. Over the years, she’s maintained a connection with California, where she first worked in the health field. In 2011, Kris returned to Oregon to care for her mother and was hit with some of the many challenges faced by caregivers, particularly how health insurance can affect access to care. With her background in health and recent caregiving experience, Kris decided to become a licensed agent with HealthMarkets Insurance, a national company and one of the largest providers of health insurance in the country.

Kris is active in the local community and contributes both professionally and personally. She is a member

Estate Planning

For your college student or young adult

Your child turns 18 and is getting ready to go to college or to move into an apartment with some friends... Congratulations! But, since your child has turned 18 — generally considered the age of majority or officially considered an adult — your rights as a parent are essentially cut off. What if they are in a car accident and cannot handle their financial affairs? What happens if they pass away? These are terrible things to consider but they happen. Just because you are a parent does NOT mean that you have any legal right to your adult child’s financial or medical decision making.

What types of estate planning and documents should your college student / your adult child have in place?

Power of Attorney

A POA will allow an “agent” to deal with your adult child’s insurance, banks, college, and other institutions if they are unable to do so. If your adult child is injured or otherwise unable to finish a college semester or apartment lease term, a parent has no inherent right to intercede with the college or landlord. If you have a power of attorney, you will have the authority to do those things.

Advance Directive

If your child is in the hospital and unable to make medical decisions, who has the right to make those medical decisions? Oregon statutes provide for a list of individuals who can make these medical decisions in the event that no Advance Directive has been signed, but what happens if there is dispute between these individuals, or your adult child wants one parent to have priority over the other parent? What happens if your adult child is in a different state? Now what?

HIPAA Authorization

In an effort to protect our medical records, HIPAA limits who can access our medical records. A young adult should carefully consider providing a HIPAA Release / Authorization to a parent or other trusted party to ensure someone has the complete picture to help make medical decisions if they cannot.

Beneficiary Designations

Your adult child will have bank accounts and maybe even retirement or investment accounts. They should carefully consider adding individuals as beneficiaries on these various accounts. If they pass away, those designations could prevent the need to probate their estate or, at a minimum, provide some immediately accessible funds to address the expenses related to the adult child’s passing.

Will

While your adult child may not own much, they will own some things. A will allows them to determine who will get their bank accounts, car, motorcycle, tools, and other items. Further, a will allows them to determine who will handle their estate — be the personal representative / executor. They can choose a parent or a sibling or a friend or a significant other. But, without a will, there will be some uncertainty as to who will fill this role. Behind the Lens

Local student a talented sports photographer

events. He’s also offering freelance photography services to the community. “I’ve been freelancing at lots of sporting events for younger kids. Most recently, I shot a West Linn football team of fourth and fifth graders.”

Though his greatest love is taking challenging action shots at sporting events, he’s open to other projects. “Over the summer I was dabbling in floral photography and portraits. I’m planning to offer senior photos and expand my portfolio in all different directions,” Christian says. He mainly shoots with his trusty Canon EOS Rebel T7 but occasionally utilizes the high-end digital cameras the school provides for the yearbook.

Photos Courtesy of Christian Beck

Creating memories through photography is a passion for Christian Beck. “I love the ability to capture one brief moment in time,” he explains, “whether it’s an average moment that you make look spectacular or a crucial moment so you have that picture to say, ‘Here it is. The big moment.’”

Christian’s expertise is sports photography, where he uses different angles, zoom and focus to document the most thrilling events of athleticism. His photos evoke the emotions coursing through the athletes and their audience at the game’s defining moments.

Though he’s always been interested in documenting the world around him, Christian started taking photojournalism more seriously after joining Intro to Yearbook his sophomore year of high school. He got his hands on a professional camera and found that he had a natural ability for framing and action shots. “I began taking pictures at all the sporting events, and liked the look of my pictures in the eyes of someone who really knew nothing about photography. That’s when I decided to pick up my own camera and look further into all the opportunities photojournalism has to offer.”

Now a junior, Christian is a photographer for the Canby High School yearbook and covers all types of sporting

Christian plans to turn his artistic talents into a career. “After high school, I’m going to the University of Oregon for photojournalism,” he shares. “From there, I would love to work for a magazine, newspaper or organization like OSAA. I love the feeling of capturing a big moment that can be used everywhere and tell the story to people who weren’t there to see it.”

Ambitious, Christian is involved in many other activities besides photography, including being an athlete. “I do track and field in the spring, and I’m also part of the concert choir. I like the feeling of being on a team, knowing you’re part of something bigger,” he says.

Though he spent much of his childhood in Milwaukie, Christian and his family have been in Canby for over seven years and they love it. “Everyone here is very kind to the people around them, and most people are deeply rooted in the community,” says Christian.

Christian credits much of his rapidly growing success as a photographer to the encouragement from his parents. “They’ve been extremely supportive of what I want to do and who I want to be. Whether it’s helping financially or with advertising and making connections, I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Kiln It with Kindness

Bob Hackney, the man at the wheel

Bob Hackney is a seasoned artist and a treasured part of the local community. With his wealth of experience and unique perspective on art, he offers invaluable guidance to many aspiring artists. Interacting with Bob, whether in an informal chat or a more formal class environment, enhances the artistic journey of his students.

As a child living in Wisconsin, Bob always found joy in creating beautiful works of art. When he was a sophomore in high school, his passion translated into one of the greatest gifts — a full scholarship from the local women’s club to attend an Art Camp at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Though his original intention was to study painting, something about ceramics spoke to Bob, which led him to choose that course instead — which ultimately changed the entire trajectory of his future. In his junior year in high school, he discovered his passion for pottery and practically lived in the studio. He graduated high school a year early and attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and River Falls, where he studied under some of the best in the field, such as Don Reitz, Paula Rice, Kurt Wild.

After graduation, Bob worked as a landscape gardener and

stone mason for over twenty years. He always loved horses, and when his last horse died, he was forced to confront who he was as an adult without his beloved companion. That is when he returned to pottery and enrolled in a continuing education class at PCC. Eventually, his interest and efforts led to a position as an instructor and manager of the pottery studio at Valley Art.

Bob’s dedication to his craft is evident in his meticulous preparation for each class he teaches. Recognizing the unique mentality of each artist, he encourages them to observe other potters, identify techniques that resonate with them. He then provides guidance on how to implement those methods. Bob also encourages artists to focus on what brings them joy, as this will reflect in their work.

When the rainy days come, Bob joins a dedicated crew that engages in wood firing at East Creek Art. This unique technique, revered by fellow potters, involves carefully stoking a wood kiln around the clock for over five days to create beautiful and unpredictable designs on the pottery pieces. The flames and ash interact with the glazes in such a way that each piece is essentially a unique canvas for the flame work. Opening the kiln post-firing is akin to unwrapping Christmas presents — the anticipation and excitement are palpable, and each revealed pottery piece is a delightful surprise. It is also a chance to engage with a community of friends who share a common passion for the art as they create memories and bonds that last a lifetime.

Bob teaches about 50 students of all ability levels at Valley Art. Being part of Valley Art is not just about supporting the local art scene: it’s about nourishing a community hub that has been extraordinary for Forest Grove. If you want to see some of his work or your artistic side is calling, visit Valley Art. And who knows? Your journey may lead you to

A Surprise Victory

North Marion 14-year-old pulls off upset in 1,500-meter national championships

said, and a heartfelt moment of prayer just before the July 30 finals race also helped calm her nerves.

Still, the result was so close that Callie did not realize immediately that she had won. “She had a really good kick so I wasn’t sure,” Callie recalls. “I didn’t think I could do it so it was super cool.”

A member of the Tualatin-based Inner Circle Track Club, Callie is a lifelong soccer player who first started running in the spring of 2022. “I really love it,” she says of her new sport. “It’s great being around the other runners, and it’s just a lot of fun.”

Alocal 14-year-old is a national track and field champion after a surprising upset victory in the 1,500-meter race at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held at Hayward Field earlier this summer.

Macallan “Callie” Cutsforth, a homeschool student in the North Marion School District who is relatively new to running, says she did not go into the championships expecting to win — but that’s exactly what she did.

“I definitely would not say I was confident,” she said with a laugh. “But I ran a tactical race. It was a little slower than I thought we would go out. I was out front, which is not normally how I run, but I settled in. During the last lap, I had a nice kick and was able to hold onto the lead just long enough.”

She’s not kidding. Second-place finisher Chloe Leduc, a fellow incoming freshman from the Oakland Cubs running club, clocked a time of 4:52.59 — only two-hundredths of a second behind Callie’s winning time of 4:52.57.

Knowing her friends, family and coaches were in the stands cheering her on helped give her confidence, she

Callie particularly enjoys the camaraderie and friendship of the Inner Circle Track Club, which practices at Tualatin High School and also boasts other highprofile prep school athletes, including long jumper Sophia Beckmon, who won the women’s 17-18 long jump at the USATF Nationals, and Mia BrahePedersen, a multiple gold medalist at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association 2023 Championships earlier this year and the holder of several Oregon sprinting records.

Callie feels proud to have proven herself in her own right, winning a national championship at the iconic Hayward Field. “That was really cool — and a little intimidating,” she admitted. “It was pretty cool to think that this was where the professionals and all the top athletes from around the world compete.”

Looking forward, Callie plans to complete her freshman year at North Marion High School, and learn how to juggle competing in both soccer and cross country.

Canby Cougars eye triumphant return

Konold’s return is a significant boost for the Cougars, but he will be far from alone in their quest for postseason success.

Fellow senior Andrew Soles and junior Jackson Doman are also expected to be pivotal contributors this season. Soles, an all-league honorable mention selection last season on both sides of the ball, will anchor the middle of the defense, while Doman, a 6-5 receiver with a Division I offer from BYU, will be a formidable presence on both offense and defense.

On the line, senior Gideon Noss returns with all-league status after being a second-teamer on both sides of the ball last season. His strength and work ethic make him a key player to watch.

The silver lining of having an injury-plagued season like last year’s campaign is that the Cougs will be bringing back a lot of players with experience they didn’t necessarily expect to have, based on their placement in the preseason depth charts.

After an injury-riddled season in 2022, the Canby High School football team is gearing up for a triumphant return to the postseason in 2023. Last year, the Cougars finished with a record of 5-4, squeaking into the league playoffs but ultimately falling to Hillsboro 28-14. This season, they’re ready to bounce back with a vengeance.

The heart and soul of this year’s squad is undoubtedly senior Tyler Konold, the first-team all-state running back. Konold has led all of 5A in total rushing yards for two years in a row, which includes last year when he sat out half of the regular season’s games due to injury.

“We’re very excited to have Tyler back, obviously,” says head coach Jimmy Joyce. “He’s an incredible talent, to have missed four games last year and still lead the league in rushing, and to already be over 2,000 yards in his career is insane in this era of modern football, especially.

“You can say so much about him, but I also want to point out how important he is to our defense as well. He’s the kind of guy you can plug in anywhere and you know you’re going to get the best out of that position.”

That included then-sophomore Taeler Pfenning, who slotted in as a more-than-capable replacement running back after Konold’s injury, and jack-of-all-trades Parker Ackerman, the team’s “Swiss Army knife” who took snaps at virtually every position last year except for offensive line.

Coach Joyce is optimistic about the team’s depth and strength, setting their sights on making a playoff run.

Canby’s success on the defensive side will be vital in replacing the departures of Braden Snoderly and Landon Sprague. Snoderly, who recorded over 100 tackles, was an honorable mention all-state selection at linebacker, while Sprague earned an honorable mention all-league selection at safety.

Fortunately, the team has a new

addition that will bolster the defense: junior Jackson Heath. A transfer from Putnam, Heath showcased his skills with three interceptions and one pick-six last year for the No. 5 ranked Kingsmen. Teammates like Konold are thrilled to have him on board.

If Canby High School returns to the

playoffs this season, it will mark their second appearance since moving down to 5A from 6A in the 2021 season. In their inaugural full season at 5A, the Cougars finished ranked No. 4 in the state but fell in the quarterfinals to No. 5 Thurston 20-0.

However, merely making the playoffs will not be enough for this determined team led by a hungry senior running back who is determined to leave his mark on the program.

“I’m very confident in our team this year. I think we’re going to do great, and we don’t want to make it to just playoffs — we want to win it all,”

Konold says. “That’s definitely the goal for the season, but we’re going to take each week one at a time, and just always give our full effort.”

As the 2023 season unfolds, keep an eye on Canby High School football, a team poised for a comeback and ready to make their mark in the postseason. With a talented roster and a burning desire for success, they are a force to be reckoned with in Oregon high school football.

“You probably think this world is a dream come true, but you’re wrong.” Based on Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name, it’s very much in the same vein as “A Nightmare Before Christmas” — dark and otherworldly. You’d think this is a Tim Burton lm but it’s not — it was actually the feature lm from Portland, OR-based LAIKA Studios, who went on to make “ParaNorman,” “Corpse Bride,” and many more. And it stands on its own! While de nitely dark, it’s also whimsical, deeply imaginative and always adventurous. In the movie, Coraline (Dakota Fanning) discovers a parallel world with an alternate family and friends — while fun at rst, it quickly becomes more of a nightmare. Also starring Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr. and Ian McShane, this is a great movie for the family. Rated PG for scary images, some language and suggestive humor.

“Why was I cursed with such idiot sisters?” A familyfriendly ‘90s classic, “Hocus Pocus” is one of my Halloween go-tos. Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as three Salem witches who are resurrected for Halloween, it’s a story which follows new kids Max (Omri Katz ) and Dani ( ora Birch), as well as Allison (Vinessa Shaw ), local witch expert and Max’s girlfriend, as they battle e Sanderson Sisters to the grave! Although ctional, it’s partly based on a true story — the three sisters were indeed charged with witchcra , one escaped while the other two were hanged. e movie, however, is pretty lightweight, fun and adventurous, including musical numbers and one-liner a er one-liner — it’s plenty funny for adults but silly enough for kids. It’s a mature PG due to being scary to younger children and some mature language — I would say 6 and older. Rated PG.

Who Invented the Candy Corn

“Oral histories identify the inventor of candy corn as George Renninger, an employee at Wunderle Candy Company in Philadelphia. Wunderle was the rst company to sell these multicolored treats made of sugar and corn syrup, according to the National Confectioners Association.”

https://www.history.com/news/candy-corn-invented

“Here’s Johnny!” Stanley Kubrick’s iconic horror-thriller is of course based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. While the book was twice as long as needed, the lm is as tight as you’d expect, starting o painstakingly calm and eerie until it builds to a horrifying and dramatic crescendo. Starring Jack Nicholson (Jack Torrance), Shelley Duvall (Wendy) and Danny Lloyd (Danny), this story follows the Torrance family as they agree to caretake the huge and remote Overlook Hotel during wintertime. If you’ve somehow never seen it, this is classic horror cinema — a mystery unfolding in a place that isn’t what it seems — and the seemingly ordinary family is anything but. It’s a masterclass overall in acting, directing and score — a must-see for Halloween. Teens and older only. Rated R for mature content, language and violence.

Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library or rental kiosk.

Building for the Future

Plans unveiled for new Multipurpose Building

The most significant project at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds & Event Center in a half a century is officially underway, as officials announced construction of the new state-of-the-art, 38,000-square-foot Multipurpose Building in the heart of the historic fairgrounds property in Canby. Carefully designed and planned by

and more. And it will be available year-round, Brian explains. During the summer, a popular time for large concert festivals like Harefest, the new building will provide an air-conditioned space to stage reception areas. And during the rest of the year and its unpredictable weather, the fairgrounds will be an attractive option for local organizations to stage large events. “That’s one of the most exciting things about this project for me: This building gives us the ability to serve the community all year round in a variety of ways,” Brian says.

Designed by LRS Architects, construction will be led by Beaverton-based Inline Commercial Construction and take place across two phases. The first phase will be the concrete foundation and roof, hoping to be completed for the 2024 Clackamas County Fair. The second phase will encompass the walls and interior finishing work, hoping to be completed by the summer of 2025.

Spanning 38,000 square feet, the building will include a 31,000-square-foot main hall that can be subdivided into three separate rooms, as well as restroom facilities, showers, a wellness room and a family restroom, a comfortable lobby, reception area and office space.

fairgrounds staff and Clackamas County Fair Board officials, the ambitious project will replace the original beef and swine barn — which was torn down in 2014 for safety reasons — and enhance the overall versatility and functionality of the facility. “This thing is getting built,” promises Clackamas County Event Center Executive Director Brian Crow, who oversaw two massive construction projects — a new show barn and a large picnic pavilion — during his previous tenure as director of the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Madras.

The new structure will replace the temporary tent erected each year to house animals during the Clackamas County Fair since the original barn was razed in 2014. “It’s a true multipurpose facility,” Brian explains. “It will be a great place to house the beef and hogs during the fair, with climatecontrolled conditions that will help keep the animals and their owners comfortable. But it also gives us a really great tool in our toolbox for natural disasters, so we can have a place to evacuate and shelter people and animals, as well as a staging point for resources and emergency personnel.”

In terms of events, the building will offer the fairgrounds a large and versatile space for trade shows, conferences, exhibitions, concerts and other entertainment, flea markets

Funding for the estimated $12 million project has come from multiple sources, including the State of Oregon, Clackamas County and the City of Canby. However, the local community is encouraged to participate in funding efforts through programs such as Fred Meyer’s Community Rewards and the Clackamas County Fair Improvement Foundation. Sponsorship and naming opportunities are available for local businesses and organizations. “We are thankful to our partners who have supported this important project, from the county, state and city, to the Fair Board, to our local community members,” Brian says. “The Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center is a big part of Canby’s and Clackamas County’s past and future, and the success of this project so far is just one more example of what makes our community so special.”

The Clackamas Fairgrounds and Event Center is located at 694 N.E. Fourth Avenue in Canby. Learn more about the project online at clackamascountyfair.com/new-construction.

CARVE THE PERFECT PUMPKI N

Believe it or not, everyone can be an artist when it comes to pumpkin carving, but it is harder than it looks. Follow the following eleven tips, and your gourds will look and smell good the entire trick-or-treating season. Get carving!

 Start with the right pumpkin. Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve.

 Cut from the bottom, not the top. Cutting your “lid” from the bottom of the pumpkin helps prevent the sides from caving in later.

 If you carve from the top, cut lid on an angle. This way it won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it, like it would with a straight up-and-down cut. A boning knife should work well for this.

 Scoop out all the pulp (and then some). You can buy a special “claw” for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream scoop will do just fine. Thin the inner wall of the “face” area to 1¼-inch thick, so it will be easier to pierce the shell.

 Sketch your design to size on paper first. Tape it to the front of your pumpkin. Using a fork or pencil, poke holes along the lines you want to carve.

 Try holding the pumpkin in your lap.

It’s easier to create features when the face is gazing up at you. It is suggested to use a serrated kitchen knife or an X-Acto knife.

 Start by making simple rough cuts.

If you get the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later.

 Use your scraps creatively. Make a tongue, pipe, or hair accessories out of discarded pieces of pumpkin shell, for example.

 Keep your pumpkin fresh.

Spread petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, revive it with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.

 Create a chimney.

First, leave the lid on for a few minutes while the candle burns. Cut a small hole where the pumpkin has blackened up top. Or, save yourself the stress and opt for a battery-operated votive. Sprinkle cinnamon inside.

That way, when you light the candle, your jack-o’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. Yum.

Serving the Community

Who would not love a sunny summer day, hundreds of classic vehicles, and lunch prepared and served by Canby Rotarians? The more than 750 vehicles at the Cutsforth’s Cruise-In included a colorful lineup of pickup trucks, sports cars, utility vehicles, station wagons, sedans, a fire truck and an ambulance. Vendors dotted the edge of Wait Park offering food, beverages, t-shirts, auto supplies and memorabilia.

Canby Rotarians assisted with many aspects of the Cruise-In, including

traffic control, opening ceremony, judging, photography, and serving hamburger and sausage dog lunches to more than 700 hungry attendees. We’re proud of Rotarian Frank Cutsforth who provides the leadership and enthusiasm for this event every year! Community service has its own rewards for Rotarians, and the money earned from the food booth will fund community service projects in the future. Thanks to all those who visited us.

Did you visit the Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo? If you entered through the blue gate, you met with the smiling face of a Canby Rotarian who took your entrance ticket, answered your questions and wished you a great time. Why do Rotarians love to perform community service? It is because of the sense of

purpose, the chance to meet old friends and make new ones, and to have fun while making a difference. The more than 80 members of the Rotary Club of Canby participate in many community service projects each year. If you are interested, consider joining us. The New Ford Ranger

The most connected and capable Ranger ever

Ford has engineered each aspect of the 2024 all-new Ranger to meet the uncompromising demands of its adventurecraving customers, including its frame, suspension, powertrains, connectivity and advanced driver assist software. It also now offers more towing technology than ever in a Ranger, convenient storage features, plus an available 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 for added power.

Ranger Ready

The foundation of Ranger backcountry readiness is durability and reliability. To ensure the all-new Ford Ranger is Built Ford Tough, it’s been tested with the equivalent of more than 4.9 million customer miles prior to launch.

In designing the backbone of Ranger, Ford engineers improved the truck’s fully boxed high-strength steel frame, with the wheelbase and track both stretched about two inches to provide more bed space and improved stability while remaining easy to navigate on trails.

The rear shocks and shock mounts have also been moved outboard of the frame rails for improved ride and control. All versions of the Ranger also benefit off-road from improved ground clearance and better approach and departure angles.

To power these adventures, the proven 2.3-liter EcoBoost continues as the standard engine, developing 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque, and Ranger will offer the available 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 shared with F-150® and Bronco.® All Rangers come with a standard class-exclusive 10-speed automatic SelectShift® transmission and an available electronic shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system built for on-demand off-road and low traction capability.

More Ranger, More Ready

The all-new Ranger introduces more clever storage and useful features for owners, like an available wireless charger for mobile devices, a large center console storage bin, big door pockets designed for quick access to frequently used tools and other

items and an available second, upper glovebox to store even more gear. Ranger also has improved second-row storage with under-seat rear cargo bins optimized to make it easy to stash stuff. New fold-flat rear seatbacks help with loading and moving large objects, from coolers to large screen TVs.

The new interior features upgraded materials and textures, improved fit and finish, and more purposeful technology. The large center touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC® 4A system puts smart and connected features at your fingertips. Ranger includes a standard embedded 4G LTE modem and the convenience of features built into FordPass® Connect. With just a touch, drivers can access dedicated screens for drive modes, off-road data, navigation, music and other vehicle controls. The center screen is also linked to the available 360-degree camera, which helps make parking a breeze or helps negotiating particularly tricky terrain.

At night to help set up a campsite with ease, Ranger now has available zone lighting that can be controlled through the invehicle touchscreen or FordPass® app, plus available bed lighting helps owners find their gear in dark conditions.

In the new Ford Ranger, there are 31 standard or available driver assist features, the most available driver assist features in its class. These include BLIS® with trailer coverage to help alert drivers to vehicles in blind spots and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. A new, intuitive short-throw E-shifter on Lariat 4x4 enables Ranger to offer driver assist features such as available class-exclusive active park assist 2.0, which is a fullyautomated system to help customers parallel and perpendicular park, and class-exclusive pro trailer backup assist and trailer reverse guidance.

The bed features an available integrated box side step behind the rear tires, big enough to fit both feet, creating a strong, stable way to access everything in the cargo box. There’s also an available 400-watt power inverter with an outlet in the bed for general use. The redesigned tailgate also doubles as a workbench with an integrated ruler and clamp pockets.

Reality Check on Your Retirement Savings

enough to supplement your Social Security without sacrificing your lifestyle. You can check your projected Social Security payments on the Social Security Administration’s website.

Time may heal all wounds.

Millennials may have unpleasant memories of the Great Recession and the family turmoil it might have caused. A conservative attitude toward risk isn’t surprising given those circumstances, but sticking to overly conservative investments has its own risks, such as not keeping up with inflation. You have time to recover from the inevitable ups and downs of the markets, which means you might want to consider adding some aggressive investments to your retirement account.

Figure out how long your savings will last.

To get a reasonably accurate figure, you should understand your annual “burn rate.” That’s the amount of savings you’ll need to live on each year. You then can see whether it will last for your estimated life expectancy, which you can check with any number of online calculators. If the answer is no, you’ll have to increase the amount you save now and/or cut back on your retirement plans.

Whether you’re 23 or 35, it’s important to know whether you are saving enough for your retirement. There is no time like the present to ensure you are allocating enough funds to your retirement account.

With folks routinely living into their 80s and 90s, it’s more important than ever to ensure your money lasts your lifetime. Millennials have the advantage of time. You can benefit from compounding and the long-term trends that can make a real difference over the course of several decades.

A good savings target is 15% of your income.

That’s a very general target, and in many cases, it’s too conservative. That can be a real challenge if you are also saving for a house and/or paying off student loans. The important point is to make a commitment to your retirement savings by contributing a consistent amount with each paycheck. The absolute percentage is secondary; more important is to set a goal and stick to it.

How will your lifestyle change?

In retirement, you may no longer be drawing a salary, although many folks take up some form of self-employment that brings in an income. It’s up to you whether earnings will be part of your retirement plan. If not, your retirement savings should be robust

Your retirement finances are not set in stone. You have options at any age. Call or email us to review your options and decide on the best course of action. Don’t put it off — the sooner you understand your financial alternatives, the sooner you can take positive action to protect your golden years.

Can you believe it? The time has gone by so fast. We started out in Canby with just Suzan and her daughter and sometimes her mom and one very part-time employee. And now there are five of us! Tina has been here the longest. Then Angela came on just in time to go through the pandemic. Then Taylor and Amy so Suzan could spend more time curating our stock and painting. We have so much fun seeing all of you, watching the local kids grow up, and being a part of downtown Canby.

We thought we’d spend the next few months until our anniversary (end of April next year) sharing some of our favorite pieces that have come through the shop.

The grey and chalkboard sideboard was here when we opened. It was purchased by a husband for his wife, who admired it. It’s quirky and fun and you won’t find another like it.

I call the blue-and-white table our Atomic Table. It was purchased by a business called

Pilgrim’s Nuts for their candy shop in North Plains. If you haven’t had their nuts yet, you’re missing out.

I regret not keeping the 1960s embroidery for myself. It was purchased by a gentleman from Sherwood. I wonder if he still has it?

See this space for more of our past favorites! And come on by and see our new favorites. We’re open every day.

CANBY FIRE DISTRICT

October

Is Fire Prevention Month Home Fire Escape Plan Home Fire Escape Plan

During a typical home fire, you may have just minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Planning and practicing escapes can help you and your family make the most of this narrow window of time and give everyone enough time to get out safely. Here are simple steps to plan and prepare for your safe home fire escape:

Ensure your home has working smoke alarms and remember to check them monthly. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. An easy-to-remember timeline for checking your smoke alarms and replacing batteries is to do so every time you change your clocks.

Make an escape map, showing every window and door, and share it with everyone in the household.

Know two ways out of every room, if possible.

Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from the home where everyone should meet.

Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year, during the night and day.

When the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out; never go back inside for others or pets.

Once outside, call 9-1-1.

Smoke alarm technology has advanced. Many now come with 10-year batteries, and some are tamperresistant. Canby Fire encourages residents to test their alarms before changing the battery. Smoke alarms are the first line of defense in a fire, so their proper functionality is key to being notified of danger within your home or business.

A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.

Sporting Smallmouth

Local rivers in top 10 for feisty brown bass

Often thought of as a salmon and steelhead river, the Columbia has also become one of the top 10 smallmouth bass rivers in the world. The Willamette River is just as productive for those looking to catch bass.

Across the U.S. and beyond, smallmouth are a prized sportfish due to their capacity to hammer a lure, fight well for their size and even — to some — taste excellent. Although keeping bass is allowed on both the Columbia and Willamette, I wouldn’t recommend keeping Willamette bass due to the water quality of the river.

Where to Fish

Smallmouth bass move around river systems chasing prey and responding to water temperature. This is a basic run-down of a complex season behavior: Winter is the hardest time to locate smallmouth bass — often they are found in deep water and will not move far for bait. In the spring, smallmouth bass will start moving into back-channels, marinas and sloughs to find areas to spawn where water temperature is around the mid-50s. Fish along docks, looking for submerged wood, pilings and rock banks — you don’t even need a boat! In the Columbia, think of areas like Hood River, The Dalles and even the mouth of the Sandy River.

In the summer, you mostly want to target the main river currents. Look on a map for “points” in the river where land sticks out into the water, especially if they have rocky, gravelly banks. You can drive on either side of the Columbia River and fish along the entrances to marinas or the mainstem. Fall can be excellent as smallmouth bass will feed voraciously to stock up on weight before their wintertime slowdown. Ultimately, do not sit casting in the same place. Keep moving.

How to Catch

There are tens of thousands of hours you could spend researching how to catch smallmouth. Here are some basic ways to get started. Go to a sporting goods store and ask them to help you find a “spinning” bass fishing rod. Always bring at least two different types of lures! Ask a store rep for options for “crankbaits,” “grubtail jigs” and “spinnerbaits.” Also, the “earthworm” or “nightcrawler” will not only catch bass, but also bluegill, perch, trout and others!

Once you’re rigged up and have chosen an area — don’t be afraid to try the Portland Waterfront…shhh — simply head out to the bank and start casting. Cast out as far as you can, then vary your retrieve of the lure with fast, slow, occasional “jerks.” Every cast you make should be different.

Conclusion

As someone who has enjoyed catching smallmouth, I feel it is the most highly overlooked fishery in our area. I would encourage you to research more techniques through books, magazines and the internet. You may be surprised at how fun it is to catch smallmouth bass in the northern region of Oregon.

To see the author catching smallmouth bass on the Columbia River, just search “Columbia River Smallmouth Bass Angler West TV” on YouTube.

CASTOFFS, ROGUES AND WINNERS

Play ball! During the 1970s, umpires called out the famous phrase to launch Portland Mavericks baseball games at Civic Stadium (Providence Park) in one of the most colorful chapters in the history of Portland baseball.

Although the renegade Portland Mavericks existed for only five summers, this uniquely memorable team will forever be etched in the history of minor league baseball. The Mavericks emerged onto the Portland baseball scene in 1973 with the departure of the Portland Beavers — the city’s long-time triple-A club — moving to Spokane. The Mavericks were owned by ex-minor league baseball player and former actor, Bing Russell, best known for his role as Deputy Clem Foster on the TV Western Bonanza. Bing was the father of well-known actor Kurt Russell, who unbeknownst to many, played for the Portland Mavericks their inaugural season — batting .229 in 23 games.

Initially, trading the triple-A Beavers for the single-A Mavericks seemed like a raw deal for Portland baseball fans; however, the Portland Mavericks became a surprise success. Bing Russell’s motto for the Mavericks — that it should be “fun” — rendered the game-time atmosphere at Civic Stadium circus-like and light-hearted. Russell was a trendsetter, being one of the first to promote minor league baseball with a focus on fun and entertainment.

As an independent team, unaffiliated with a major league franchise, the Mavericks recruited ex-minor leaguers and ex-big leaguers who were looking for an opportunity to revive fading careers. At the time, Mavericks were the only independent professional baseball team in the country, and despite the fact that they could pay players only $300 a month, hopefuls continued to arrive from across the United States each June to participate in Bing Russell’s tryouts.

Unlike many independent teams, the Mavericks were competitive in their single-A Northwest League. For five seasons straight, the Mavericks were not only competitive, but won a number of league titles. In 1973, this rag-tag collection of baseball castoffs ended the season with a 45-35 record, and won the NWL south division title.

year, the Mavericks went 50-34, finishing second place in the newly formatted NWL west division. In 1975 and 1976, the Mavericks won the NWL title, but in 1977 (their last year), despite earning the best record in franchise history (44-22), they lost in the championship game to Bellingham. It was a remarkable run for an independent team of baseball rejects and has-beens who, during the course of their short but memorable existence, faced major league prospects such as Ozzie Smith, Dave Steward, Rickey Henderson, Mike Scioscia, Pedro Guerrero, and Dave Henderson—all of whom went on to become big-time stars in the MLB.

Contrary to the Portland Beavers who struggled with attendance in the early 1970s, the Mavericks packed the stands. In three out of five seasons, the Mavericks’ attendance exceeded 100,000 fans. In 1977, the Mavericks attracted 125,300 fans in only 33 games, which remains the attendance record in the minor leagues for short-season single-A level.

Despite the Portland Mavericks’ short existence, their seasons were distinguished by crazy hijinks, creativity, and historic firsts. Among the memorable moments in Mavericks history was the banning of manager Hank Robinson from the NWL for assaulting an umpire. Another was the 1975 game in which player/manager Frank Peters rotated all nine players in the Mavs lineup to a new position each inning. Also, when Peters wasn’t playing or managing the Mavs, he was busy operating several local nightclubs.

off field while playing for the Seattle Pilots (a former MLB team who eventually became the Milwaukee Brewers). Despite negative reaction from the MLB commissioner who felt the book painted a picture detrimental to the sport, Ball Four was a massive commercial success, selling millions of copies worldwide. As a Maverick, Bouton, along with the Mavericks pitching coach Rob Nelson, came up with the idea of Big League Chew — a shredded bubble gum alternative to chewing tobacco—that was initially picked up and produced by Wrigley gum.

The Portland Mavericks came to an end in 1977 when the Pacific Coast League decided to return to Portland. Organized baseball at the time operated under the authority of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. In order for the PCL to return to Portland, a deal had to be negotiated between Bing Russell and the PCL for rights to the Portland market. After months of hard bargaining, Russell ended up receiving his asking price of $206,000 — far more than the standard $25,000 compensation rate to relinquish rights to a city.

So remarkable were the Portland Mavericks during their colorful five-year run that Netflix produced the documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball, which not only recounted their amazing history, but also the Mavericks’ influence on independent baseball in the ensuing years.

consisting of the Volcanoes, Mavericks, Salem Senators, and the Campesinos de Salem-Keizer.

So, when you’re driving down I-5 near Keizer, you may notice a baseball game in progress at Volcanoes Stadium, and it just might be the newly revived Portland Mavericks. And if you’re in the mood for some good old-fashioned entertainment, stop by for a game and cheer on the storied Portland Mavericks!

BATGIRL PENNY CLEMO

The Mavericks also made history by hiring Lanny Moss and Jon Yoshiwara as General Managers. Moss, hired in 1975, was the first woman to hold the GM position in professional baseball. Yoshiwara, hired in 1977, was the first Asian-American GM in baseball at the professional level. At the same time, the 22-year old Yoshiwara was an active player on the roster as well.

Jim Bouton, ex-New York Yankee pitcher who played for the Mavericks twice, may have been the most notorious of all the team’s players. His famous book Ball Four detailed Burton’s wild experiences on and

After a forty-five year hiatus, Portland Mavericks emerged again as a member of the four-team Mavericks Independent Baseball League of the Salem Metro Area, which plays at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer. The league was formed by the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, a previous minor league team in the San Francisco Giants’ system. After the Giants chose to sever their relationship with the Volcanoes, the latter chose to form an independent league of their own. The Volcanoes organization bought rights to the former Portland Mavericks and made them one of the four teams in their new league,

Let’s not forget the Mavericks’ bat girl, Penny Clemo, hired in 1975. The 12-year-old sixth grader from Portland was among some of the first girls to participate in Little League, as a lawsuit in June 1974 (for Maria Pepe and Kim Green) forced them to accept girls into their ranks. She played with fellow seventh and eighth graders and gained a reputation for being the toughest pitcher in the South Powell Little League, as well as hitting three grand slams in 1975. This set a precedent and proved that women belonged on the baseball field, not just in the stands.
