You may have heard of cooperative organizations in the form of farm and grocery co-ops, but some of the lesser-known ones are telecommunications co-ops, like DirectLink. DirectLink is proud to be part of a nationwide network of over 260 rural cooperative communications providers. Collectively, these companies provide internet service to more than 35 percent of the country’s land mass, contribute billions of dollars to the U.S. economy annually, and support tens of thousands of jobs.
The need for access to quality, reliable internet service has never been greater. Since 1904, the cooperative spirit has guided DirectLink’s commitment to serving members’ communication needs from a four-line telephone switch in the initial days to Fiber to the Home connections now. The company fiber build continues both in and around Canby. DirectLink steadily advances toward their goal to provide a high-speed fiber connection to all of their valued members.

Welcome to fall! The time of year when the changing of leaves occur and the changing of many of our routines, too. With kids back in school, after-school activities are in full swing, and things are finally getting settled as we slowly get set to navigate the next three months and all of the upcoming annual holidays and events.
For my wife and I, this fall feels decidedly different. It is the first fall since 2004 we have not been directly tied to a school district’s calendar or any after-school activities with our daughter graduating last June. I am reminded each day when I see the school buses on the road and 3 p.m. comes and goes without me having to leave the office to pick her up from school. I am not sure who is more excited about the change of schedule, my daughter or me.
Continuing with milestones, my son, our oldest, is getting married this month. He and his fiancée will be starting the adventure of marriage and will mark the first time my immediate family will grow in numbers since 2004.
Family Milestones 503.825.2111
Looking back to when my wife and I got married, I realize how much we have both grown. I remember being young and having all of that youthful energy making me feel as if I could take on the world. In retrospect, I am fascinated by how daily actions and many small decisions made over the last few decades have guided me to where I am today.
Now, as my children have both grown up and are in their young adult years, I realize how much I enjoy being a parent. I see photos of when they were little and can honestly say I miss those days. On the other hand, it is exciting to watch them grow into the adults they are becoming and being able to celebrate these important milestones with them. I am looking forward to seeing how their stories unfold.
May your fall be a memorable one for you and your family — school-time activities or not.

TWO TO TANGO
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto Photography
Ironically, the Canby restaurant formerly known as Los Dos Amigos is still run by two amigos: co-owners and friends Jose Luis Oloarte and Angel Ramirez.
But it’s now known by a new name, Los Dos Agaves, and has established itself over the past couple of years with a newly remodeled bar, banquet room, and dining area — and a menu packed with authentic Veracruz, Mexico-inspired cuisine and a wide variety of flavorful, crowd-pleasing drinks.
“We wanted to keep the ‘Los Dos’ but also give it our own identity,” explains Manuel Oloarte, Jose’s son and a server at the restaurant. “So, we came up with Los Dos Agaves, which comes from the name of the tequila plant.
The restaurant hosts popular specials and deals on most days of the week, starting with Mondays — where kids 12 and under eat free with the purchase of an accompanying adult meal.
“My dad used to work at another restaurant where they had a special like that and people really liked it,” Manuel
Tuesdays are Taco Tuesdays at Los Dos Agaves, where the bar special will get you four tacos of any meat for only $9.95. On Wednesdays, the bar offers margaritas for $5.95 in a wide variety of flavors, the most popular being mango, strawberry, peach, blackberry, and raspberry.
And on Thirsty Thursdays, spring for something new with the cantarito, a traditional cocktail from Veracruz made with tequila and fresh tamarind, orange and lime juice, and garnished with chamoy and Tajin chile seasoning.
“That is something else my father brought from where he grew up in Mexico,” Manuel explains. “In Veracruz, they sell cantaritos on the beach. They’ll give it to you in a big clay jar. It’s very popular at our restaurant.”
The special drink is available any day but is only $11.95 on Thursdays at Los Dos Agaves.
Their specialty dishes put a heavy emphasis on authenticity, flavor, and a variety of meats, seafood and spices, like their Bandera Enchilada, a plate of three delicious enchiladas topped with green, white and red sauces inspired by the flag of Mexico; their fish and shrimp ceviche and costillas — a plate of melt-in-yourmouth barbecue ribs served with deep-fried jalapeños and other delicacies.
They also boast a “mystery plate” (“we haven’t come

up with the perfect name for it yet,” Manuel explains) featuring carne asada with a cheese enchilada and spicy fries on the side. All entrées are served with Mexican rice and beans.
Los Dos Agaves is well-known for the fresh and authentic flavors of its dishes and drinks, but Manuel believes what really sets them apart is their passion for quality and customer service.
“I think the key to our success is communication and teamwork,” he says. “I feel our employees are like a second family. We trust one another, and we take care of one another. We have a great bond
together. And, the No. 1 thing that has made our restaurant successful has been our customers. We always try to provide great service, and we have the best customers in the world.”
The restaurant hosts live mariachi music every second Sunday of the month from 3 to 5 p.m., and has plans for a new climate-controlled patio that is planned to open in November.
Los Dos Agaves is located at 102 North Ivy Street in Canby. For more information, call (503) 266-1441 or visit losdosagaves.com.

Euripides, the ancient Greek playwright, was right: “Much effort, much prosperity.” Not only does the adage apply to careers, relationships, education and more, but also beer. Let’s talk Pilsner.
One look at the clear pale lager, and it appears the simplest of beers, but its looks are definitely deceiving. The Czech-born brew, first made in the Bohemian city of Plzen in 1842 by Pilsner Urquell, remains one of the most difficult beers to perfect. As opposed to an IPA that can use hops to mask mistakes, Pilsner hides no flaws. For a brewer to make a decent Pilsner, he or she must know all the techniques and all the tricks in the book.
Steve Puga, owner of FOB Taproom, appreciates the time and talent it takes to create Pilsner, and other light-style beers such as Helles (hell-us), another pale lager requiring know-how and patience. In fact, one of his absolute favorite beers remains a Helles from the Andechs Monastery, southwest of Munich, Germany. He and his wife/ business partner, Leanne Puga, visited the Benedictine brewery in 2014, and marveled at the process, the taste and, of course, the age of the “kloster;” it started in 1455.
Fast-forward to 2022, and Puga’s favorite styles still include Pils, Helles, as well as Kolsch, a pale ale that’s refreshingly simple and “easier” to make, but still an effort to achieve, as with any good beer. The FOB knows all about hard work, not to mention excellent beer. Stop by the taproom to celebrate your own achievements with your favorite style of beer, surely on tap. Prost!

MEAT THE VETERAN “MEAT”
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
Longtime Canby attorney and Navy veteran Jim Hunsaker was inspired by his cousin, a war hero and helicopter pilot who flew three tours in Vietnam, to go into the military. Jim says the man was “larger than life” — despite his diminutive stature.
“He was only 5’6”,” he recalls, “but he had such a presence. He commanded attention when he walked into a room. He was one of my heroes, and one of the big reasons I always had a really positive view of the military growing up.”
A California native, Jim applied for and received a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship to the University of Southern California, where he “loved every part of it,” and “squeezed four and a half years into four years” before graduating with a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy.
Though his hero had been an Army colonel, Jim felt the Navy would be more his speed. “I had another cousin who was in the Navy, and carrying a rifle on the ground didn’t seem as exciting to me,” he recalls.
His first assignment was on the USS Antietam — and excitement would not be hard to find. On his very first watch as the officer of the deck (underway) on the first of two western Pacific deployments, the Antietam received word of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s armed invasion of Kuwait, Iraq’s tiny, sovereign, and oil-rich neighbor to the south.
The ship, located somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean, was ordered to steam at full speed to the Persian Gulf, where it would be stationed for several months as part of Operation Desert Shield — the early military intervention that would ultimately be known as the first Gulf War.
“It was a little stressful — and exciting,” he says. “I remember my mother and my wife, my family and friends were all scared or concerned. I wasn’t nervous or scared at all. We were doing what we’d been training to do. I use the analogy that it’s like being on a football team, where you practice every day, and then somebody says, ‘Now, we’re going to let you play a game.’ We were getting to put our skills to work for the reasons we’d been training for.”
Jim later did another deployment in the western Pacific, near Australia, which he describes as “less exciting, from a world politics perspective.” But the most impactful part of his service was his time as a legal officer aboard the ship. It was a job no one else wanted, he recalls.
“But it was a fun job for me,” he says. “I loved it. I really liked the regulations and the details and stuff like that.”
After service, Jim went to law school and began a long and successful career as an attorney at a firm in Denver, Colorado. He relocated to Canby in 2014, joining the Reif law firm, now known as Reif & Hunsaker.
He remains good friends with many of the men he served with in the Navy. And one of his three sons, Tim Hunsaker, followed in his footsteps, attending Oregon State on an NROTC scholarship and being commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marines, where he currently holds the rank of captain and is stationed at Camp Pendleton, California.
“I’m very proud of my service,” Jim says. “Whenever things come around like Veterans Day, people always say ‘Thank you for your service,’ and my response generally is, ‘It was my privilege to be able to serve.’ I still feel that way.”

People in your life won’t take your fitness seriously. Remember, you don’t need their permission to take your fitness as seriously as you need to. Don’t be ashamed to make time for it and defend that time like your life depends on it. In many ways, it can.
Without regular exercise and strength training in particular, your health and youthful feeling start to dwindle. These are not just part of your life, they are your life!
What’s that? You’re too busy to get fit? Look at what you have for “free time” for currently. Where did that time come from?
Don’t let “Start Training” be on your bucket list! You’re allowed to look away from the news, social media, the streaming circus. You’re allowed to seize and spend time in your life to eat, exercise, and sleep the way you want to. Disregard anyone who says otherwise. They’re entitled to their life, not yours.
Know that you won’t enjoy every workout. Nobody does. But you’ll always enjoy having worked out. Remember that some days, you rescue the workout. Other days, the workout rescues you.
Try not to get caught up in conflicting rules and methods. Don’t allow the billions of workout routines and diet plans to paralyze your decisions. Try something, finish the workout then analyze the outcomes.
Do you take your Fitness seriously? to
Finally, once you’ve found a setup that works for you, offer it to others. Leave a light on and ladder out for those coming up behind you. Show them your map so they can better chart theirs.

CARVE THE PERFECT PUMPKIN
Believe it or not, everyone can be an artist when it comes to pumpkin carving, but it is harder than it looks. Follow the following eleven tips, and your gourds will look and smell good the entire trick-or-treating season. Get carving!
Start with the right pumpkin. Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve.
Cut from the bottom, not the top.
Cutting your “lid” from the bottom of the pumpkin helps prevent the sides from caving in later.
If you carve from the top, cut lid on an angle.
This way it won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it, like it would with a straight up-and-down cut. A boning knife should work well for this.
Scoop out all the pulp (and then some).
You can buy a special “claw” for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream scoop will do just fine. Thin the inner wall of the “face” area to 1¼-inch thick, so it will be easier to pierce the shell.
Sketch your design to size on paper first.
Tape it to the front of your pumpkin. Using a fork or pencil, poke holes along the lines you want to carve.
Try holding the pumpkin in your lap.
It’s easier to create features when the face is gazing up at you. It is suggested to use a serrated kitchen knife or an X-Acto knife.
Start by making simple rough cuts.
If you get the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later.
Use your scraps creatively.
Make a tongue, pipe, or hair accessories out of discarded pieces of pumpkin shell, for example.
Keep your pumpkin fresh.
Spread petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, revive it with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.
Create a chimney.
First, leave the lid on for a few minutes while the candle burns. Cut a small hole where the pumpkin has blackened up top. Or, save yourself the stress and opt for a battery-operated votive.
Sprinkle cinnamon inside.
That way, when you light the candle, your jack-o’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. Yum.

October Book
TALES OF A SEVENTH GRADE LIZARD BOY by Jonathon Hill
A family of refugees from the center of the earth are forced to flee their lizard community and start a new life in the human world. Tommy has a hard time balancing the culture and life that he left with this new and strange world. Will he ever fit in and will his new classmates be able to accept him for who he is? This is the first middle-grade graphic novel from Oregon author and cartoonist Jonathon Hill. The Book Nook’s Teen Review book club member Luke DeShazer gives this 4 out of 5 stars!
GRAPHIC NOVEL
SMALL TOWN BIG MAGIC by Hazel Beck
This fun, light-hearted story about a small-town bookstore owner is the perfect romantic comedy for October. Emerson loves her independent life, small town and small business, but life’s put on hold when she discovers she’s a witch — and just in time, as an ancient evil has awakened in the town. This story celebrates the friendship and community, plus a blossoming romance with a local farmer.
YOUNG ADULT
LITTLE BLUE TRUCK FINDS A FRIEND by Alice Shertle
Beep! Beep! Have you heard the news? There is someone new on the farm! All the animals are curious and cautious about the newcomer — what will he be like? Does he neigh like a horse or oink like a pig? Does he have fur or feathers? This new Little Blue Truck adventure is a great story for teaching children about friendship and social skills.

KNOCK-KNOCK!
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
Ghosts, ghouls and other “creatures of the night” are set to take over the Canby Fairgrounds again this fall, for the 2022 edition of the Canby Haunted House (formerly known as the Clackamas County Scare Fair) — and this year’s version promises to be the spookiest one yet.
Creatures of the Night, the haunting experts who have collaborated with the fairgrounds for three straight years of thrills and chills, are set again to present this year’s uniquely tailored Halloween experience, “Knock, Knock,” which will take place over four weekends in October.
To say Creatures CEO David D. Jones is excited would be a bit of an understatement.
“Halloween is one of the most universal of celebrations for us as a people,” David says. “Halloween is the one day that we feed the people who come to our door. It’s the one day that every child is safe. It’s the one day that we all agree to play the same game — and that’s worth protecting.”
David and his nonprofit team, which has included family, friends, and hundreds of volunteers over the years, got into the scaring business sort of by accident.
“Creatures of the Night started nine years ago in the Mary S. Young Park in West Linn, where we accidentally created an urban legend,” he says. “We literally got into haunting as a lark, as a goof. It wasn’t for ‘realsies’, it was just us being silly. We entered a contest, and we realized we were
weirdly, really good at this. So we continued, and we started studying and doing research and becoming better at it.”
Creatures of the Night creates highly crafted, thoughtful haunts that are uniquely tailored for each year and location they partner with. Though the team presented an in-person haunt in a different location at the fairgrounds last fall — this year’s will be completely different. The haunters also rely heavily on ancient myths, more modern urban legends, local lore, and interviews with hundreds of area residents, business owners, and leaders to produce their unique experiences.
“If you just do a collage of mad scientist, alien, Godzilla monster and so on, it doesn’t resonate,” David explains. “You’ve got to have a cohesive story, a narrative. It’s got to be like a three-act play: beginning, middle, and end. You start with universal stories, and then you get more specific. You have to reflect the stories and fears of people now. So when we start writing the story in early spring or the turn of the year, we’re trying to guess what people are going to be scared of 10 months from now.”
And when we say Creatures’ haunts are “uniquely tailored” and “hand crafted,” we mean that literally. David and his team spend the weeks leading up to October training volunteers and staff — as well as building their haunted houses and all of their associated set pieces by hand. Many of their volunteer actors who participate in the haunt also lend a hand or, you know, paw, claw, talon, or fin. The actors, which the outfit usually refers to as “creatures” or “haunters,” are a huge part of the experience — and much more goes into it than you might think. As David explains, these are not people pulled off the street, given a mask, and simply told to lunge and go “Rawr!” at whomever passes by. For Creatures of the Night, there is an in-depth training and character development process spanning at least two months.

“They are a full character: There is a history, there is a complete story — and it’s actually a tragic story,” David says. “Like Frankenstein’s monster, every monster was somebody who was on a hero’s journey, which is what a haunt really is. We’re creating an environment where we tell a story, but the guest is the hero of the story. They’re the ones that have to fight the monsters. They have to figure their way out of the maze.”
But as to the specifics of what guests might experience at the Canby Haunted House this year, David’s lips are as sealed as Billy Butcherson’s in Hocus Pocus, saying it would be like a magician revealing his secrets — before the show. The only way to find out is to dare to enter the Canby Haunted House for yourselves.
The Canby Haunted House will be open from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 7 through the 29th. It will take place in the 4-H Hall at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Events Center, located at 694 Northeast 4th Avenue in Canby. For more information, visit creaturesofthenighthalloween.com or connect with Creatures of the Night on Facebook at facebook.com/CreaturesHaunt.

CHOICES FOR YOUR 401(K) AT A FORMER EMPLOYER
By Matt Stutes, Certified Financial Planner
One of the common threads of a mobile workforce is that many individuals who leave their job are faced with a decision about what to do with their 401(k) account, while still working. Below are 4 choices for 401(k) accounts from previous employers. You may choose to do nothing and leave your account in your previous employer’s 401(k) plan. Be aware, that your ex-employer may elect to distribute the funds to you if your balance is under a certain amount.
Another choice is to roll assets over into a new or existing traditional IRA. It’s possible that a traditional IRA may provide some investment choices that may not exist in your new 401(k) plan.
The drawback to this approach may be less creditor protection and the loss of access to these funds via a 401(k) loan feature.
There may be reasons to keep your 401(k) with your previous employer —such as investments that are low cost or have limited availability outside of the plan. Other reasons are to maintain certain creditor protections that are unique to qualified retirement plans, or to retain the ability to borrow from it, if the plan allows for such loans to ex-employees.
The primary downside is that individuals can become disconnected from the old account and pay less attention to the ongoing management of its investments.
Provided your current employer’s 401(k) accepts the transfer of assets from a pre-existing 401(k), you may want to consider moving these assets to your new plan.
The primary benefits to transferring are the convenience of consolidating your assets, retaining their strong creditor protections, and keeping them accessible via the plan’s loan feature. If the new plan has a competitive investment menu, many individuals prefer to transfer their account and make a full break with their former employer.
The last choice is to simply cash out of the account. However, if you choose to cash out, you may be required to pay ordinary income tax on the balance plus a 10% early withdrawal penalty if you are under age 59½. In addition, employers may hold onto 20% of your account balance to prepay the taxes you’ll owe.
Think carefully before deciding to cash out a retirement plan. Aside from the costs of the early withdrawal penalty, there’s an additional opportunity cost in taking money out of an account that could potentially grow on a tax-deferred basis.
Remember, you have time to consider your choices and may want to seek professional guidance to answer any questions you may have. Reach out today and we can help you decide which option supports your financial journey best.

Meet The Artist Olive Gallagher
My father, a brilliant attorney, reminded me he wasn’t surprised I became an ethicist when I founded Personal Best in 1985. Apparently, at age 7, watching him swear in a witness, I asked the difference between “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
I began singing professionally as a child. After a thirty-year performance career—as a recording artist and ASCAP songwriter, blessed with mentors like Miles Davis, Eugene Wright, Dale Olson, and Leroy Holmes, appearing in 400+ commercials, creating two companies, and writing national branding campaigns—I launched a marketing campaign for Personal Best on KEARTH-FM in LA by telling corporate America to “clean up its motives.”
Within three weeks, Hilton hired me to provide leadership and performance skills for two executives. Then Toyota hired me to lecture, followed by other Fortune 500 CEOs who read my article on “Responsible Power™” in the national edition of Manage.
In 1988, I created, hosted, and produced my own television show. “The Inner Bottom Line®” ran from 1988 until 1991 and won three ACE Awards, followed by appearances on CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC. After relocating to San Francisco in 1991, I accepted senior marketing projects. In 1996, as Creative Director for Softbank, I produced the first global conference introducing the World Wide Web. Then everything ended suddenly when I was injured and unable to travel to clients.
Armed with a laptop, camera, paper, and luck, I landed my first national branding campaign for Gallo and birthed Creative Infusion, the agency division of Personal Best. Then Lucent requested a global campaign for their latest product, followed by companies like Disney, AOL, and AllADvantage.com. The editor of the Silicon Valley magazine, Marcom Choices, liked my idea to write “The Inner Bottom Line” as a Q&A column 503.825.2111
tackling ethical dilemmas and personal choices, entering national syndication in 2000 and running weekly until 2014.
In 2004, a national book and media tour followed my publication of A Simple Path to The Good Life. In 2009, after completing my MFA in Screenwriting from American Film Institute, my thesis film, “Blame It On My Youth,” won a 2009 Sloan Award Scholarship. Then I founded Moonlight Man Productions.
After delivering hundreds of keynote speeches and seminars for companies like P&G, Canyon Ranch Spas, PG&E, Department of Labor, and Pacific Bell, the ethics work became distilled: Choices. Values. Power. Control. Intention. Relationships. We make thousands of choices daily. Each carries a price. The question became “what price are you paying for the life you’re living today?” When the price gets too high, something must change.
In 2014, I returned to radio, hosting “The Inner Bottom Line” on BlogTalkRadio, featuring guests like Faith Maloney, a founder of Best Friends, and David Williams, CEO of Make a Wish Foundation.
The consulting, branding and writing continues. In 2021, I published three books: Provenance, a novel, Emma and Her Paint Brush Tail, a children’s book, and The Cage of the Soul, a book of prose. I’ve also started a second novel, Journeys. Now I consult daily with Personal Best clients around the country on Zoom, serve as a Wilsonville Planning Commissioner, and was named “Top 20 Coach of 2022” by the Coach Foundation.

“A Good Place for Smiles” really sums up the feeling that most people have for Canby Adult Center. Director Kathy Robinson and her staff, plus volunteers, participants and friends give of their time and are the reason why CAC is so loved, and why older adults feel at home, safe, secure and happy. Kathy grew up in Canby, left for college, and moved onto an international nonprofit career. She moved back to Canby in 2006 to raise her family, and Kathy was drawn to the Canby Adult Center as it allowed her to serve older adults, who in some cases she had known all her life.
The list of services provided at CAC includes prepared hot lunches four days per week. They also package and deliver hot meals for those who are homebound. For those in need, they send additional meals to cover when the kitchen is closed. Patrons come to enjoy a cup of coffee and a good meal with friends, as making social connections is so important for good health in body and mind, or better yet, heart and soul.
Their services also include impressive daily transportation to and from CAC. They offer recreational and referral services, plus provide medical rides in the tri-county area. They offer exercise, movies, and day trips. And their list of games is abundant, even welcoming family and friends to join in a game of bingo, pinochle, a game of pool, or peruse their bookshelves and puzzles.
Their educational programs have included heart health, celiac disease, arthritis, and emotional wellness. During tax season, CAC welcomes AARP volunteers who assist the older adult community in tax preparation. In September they will host a year-long diabetes program for those at risk. CAC makes every effort to provide information where there is a need or topic of interest. They go the extra mile!
What makes CAC great? They provide over 40,000 meals a year to Canby’s older adults. They offer a safe and fun place for older adults to eat, learn, visit local sights, and experience interesting events. But wait! Here’s the best part: All CAC’s services are absolutely FREE!
The wish list for CAC is well supported by the community of Canby through their fundraisers and individual donations, in addition to volunteer service. The building they occupy is owned by the city of Canby and was built in the 1980s, and their goal would be a better facility for future generations of older adults. If you wish to volunteer or donate to CAC, please stop in, give them a call, or visit their website.

DIVORCE CONSIDERATIONS (Part 2) PROPERTY DIVISION
Our last column briefly discussed some issues that a divorcing parent will likely encounter regarding the couple’s children. This column will look at one of the most contentious divorce issues – property division.
Oregon statutes and case law state that above all other considerations, property division between divorcing spouses at the time of divorce must be “just and proper”. The court uses a three-step process to try and get to its “just and proper” result, on an asset-by-asset basis. These steps are: (i) classifying the asset; (ii) determining if a presumption of equal contribution applies; and then (iii) dividing the proper based on the “just and proper” analysis.
MARITAL PROPERTY v. MARITAL ASSET.
The names of these classes of property are so similar that, by themselves, they don’t provide much help in determining which is which. The actual distinction between the two classes is time-based on the couple’s wedding date. Oregon law describes “marital property” as all “real or personal property, or both, of either or both of the parties.” Essentially “marital property” comprises all of the property owned by both spouses, regardless of when it was acquired. On the other hand, “marital assets” are a subset of marital property that are acquired during the marriage. The divorce court considers the division of marital assets differently than marital property because it applies various presumptions to the division of marital assets. All of that being said, it’s important to bear in mind that regardless of the characterization of an asset as either marital property or a marital asset, an Oregon divorce court has the authority to allocate any property owned by either party, including debts, so a person considering divorce shouldn’t automatically consider an asset is “safe” from division under the court’s “just and proper” standard.
THE PRESUMPTION OF EQUAL CONTRIBUTION. Once the court has determined that an asset is a marital asset, the next step is to decide if the “presumption of equal contribution” applies. In essence, Oregon courts initially assume that, absent evidence to the contrary, each spouse equally contributed to the acquisition of assets during the
marriage (marital assets) regardless of how this property is titled or held, and regardless of what that partner’s role was in the marriage. This presumption is a starting point and is not absolute – either spouse may attempt to rebut the presumption of equal contribution by submitting evidence to the court that the other spouse’s efforts during the marriage did not contribute equally to acquisition of the asset in question, or that the asset was acquired as a gift, or otherwise. In deciding whether a party has adequately rebutted the presumption of equal contribution, the court is allowed to look at both economic and noneconomic spousal contributions, including contributions of a spouse as a homemaker. Notably, assets “acquired by gift to one party” that have been kept separate are excluded from the presumption of equal contribution, even if those assets were obtained during the marriage. Oregon law defines “gifts” in this context as property that was gained “through gift, devise, bequest, operation of law, beneficiary designation, or inheritance”.
JUST AND PROPER. The final step of the property division process affords the court especially wide discretion regarding which spouse will receive which assets. After the above determinations have been made, the court basically gets to decide the result that it thinks is the fairest to both parties (a just and proper result) - this includes reviewing property that is premarital, inherited, jointly acquired, or otherwise. This stage of asset division considers the above steps but isn’t necessarily bound by them. At the end of the day, the court’s final decision as to what property division is just and proper in all the circumstances is a matter of discretion.
Property division during divorce is incredibly complicated and includes additional factors that can’t be touched on here due to limited space. If you have any questions about these or anything else relating to Oregon family law, speaking with an attorney is a great first step in working out what the process looks like, and getting help on how to best approach your matter. If you have questions or would like assistance in divorce give us a call.

Three Generations
Family at heart of independent business
By Hilary Berg, Staff Writer
Walk into a big-box hardware store, and there are a variety of items you might seek. Whether it’s paint, steel nails, pressure-treated wood, 80 grit sandpaper, or a riding lawn mower, chances of speaking with someone are near to none. If you do manage to wrangle an employee, they are likely being approached by several others. Better have your questions ready.
If you’re investing in outdoor power equipment, the need to speak to a salesperson is tantamount to a successful — and safe — experience.
Enter Canby Rental & Equipment (CRE). Walk into the 4,500-square-foot store, and you’re instantly greeted by an employee and maybe even the owner, Matt Zacher, who represents the third generation to manage the store. In 1979, his grandparents Duane and Bonnie Zacher opened the small-engine repair shop in downtown Canby.
These days, CRE offers a variety of high-quality, high-profile brands to fit customers’ garden and/or home repair needs. Peruse Stihl handheld tools, Honda and Scag power equipment, Husqvarna riding mowers and garden tractors, walk-behind and zero-turn riding mowers from both Toro and Exmark, two-wheeled tractors by BCS, and Multiquip compaction equipment. Not sure what you need for your upcoming landscaping project? The staff can help. Have a yard with a serious slope? CRE can
steer you in the right direction. Need one of your machines serviced or repaired? Call CRE Service. Want battery-powered tools that use zero fuel? Zacher and his staff can educate you on all the exciting new products CRE sells and stands behind.
The future’s bright for DIY equipment. Unlike cars that depreciate in value, outdoor power equipment is appreciating due to high demand and supply chain issues, but also the repairability of smaller engines.
As regulations transform the industry, CRE is also changing with the times. Gas-powered lawn mowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, and leaf blowers are in the process of being banned in California. Zacher sees Oregon headed in the same direction. Battery-operated machines have come down in price, but for items such as lawn mowers, the market is new and prices high. Yet a need for alternative-energy options is fueling future demand.
With current fuel prices, it’s no wonder the trend is becoming the norm. In the meantime, CRE sells both battery- and gasoperated machines and tools, and they can answer questions you have about both. No need to wander aisles looking for help.
Canby Rental & Equipment is located at 476 NW 1st Ave. in Canby. Give them a ring at (503) 266-7811, or visit their website at canbyrental.com.

Some Things to Celebrate
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer Photo by Canby First
Canby Music recently celebrated its 2nd anniversary at its new home, a former residence that owner Brian Haines and his team converted into a store during the summer of 2020. And they welcomed its newest employee, Ryleigh Mulhern.
Ryleigh, a Country Christian High School senior who joined the Canby Music team six months ago, helps serve the store’s customers while also teaching piano, guitar, ukulele, clarinet, and voice. The lessons are her favorite part of the job, she admits.
The store also recently celebrated its 2nd year at its new location on the corner of 1st and Douglas. The new store “officially” opened on September 1, 2020, though the date is a bit squishy: Canby Music was technically operating out of both locations as it made its transition.
“When you’re in the middle of a move like we were, there’s no ‘real’ first day,” Brian says. “And then, one week later, the town was evacuated because of the fires. I promise I’m never moving again!”
With school back in session, Brian and his team are looking forward to a busy band season — their first “normal” one in the new location. Band rentals are a big part of their business, and they offer a lot of support to students who are learning the ins and outs of their new instrument.
The introductory lessons also cover basic maintenance and storage techniques to ensure the rental stays in proper working order.
Canby Music is located at 590 NW 1st Avenue in Canby. For more information, call 503-263-2263 or visit canbymusic.com.

BULK UP AT CUTSFORTH’S
The More The Merrier
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto Photography
Carol Perrenoud has worked in and managed the bulk foods section of Cutsforth’s Market for a little over two years — a tiny fraction of her 16-year-long career in the grocery business, at various stores and in a wide variety of roles. But as soon as she dipped her toe into bulk foods (not literally), she knew she had found her calling.
“I have never done bulk foods until I came here, but I was born to do this,” she says with a laugh. “I always shop bulk foods, and growing up, my mother kind of had her own mini-bulk foods thing in southern California. She would go to the wholesale produce markets downtown at 4 in the morning and buy in bulk, then sell it to all of her friends.”
Carol also happens to have a lifetime of personal experience carefully organizing, inventorying, and marketing thousands of containers of distinct materials by virtue of her mail-order bead business. Within the glass-bead community, Carol is wellknown for her expertise in the craft, with her work even being displayed in museums.
“In that little fishbowl of a world, I sign autographs,” she chuckles. “But the skillset really does lend itself well to bulk foods. It’s a perfect match: You just switch out the beads for grains and chocolates.”
You won’t find any glass beads in the bins or baskets at Cutsforth’s Market, but you will find virtually everything else: nuts, seeds, flours, grains, dried fruit, cereals, spices, herbs, rice, flour and other baking necessities, and an astonishing array of bulk candy.
The nature of Carol’s work means she serves a clientele as diverse as her products: from seniors needing assistance gathering grains and nuts from the top shelf for their oatmeal and hot cereal, to little kids looking for their latest sugar fix.
Not that the candy is just for kids. Carol takes her cue from her customers and coworkers as to what to stock in the bulk foods section, sometimes even passing samples
of new products around in the backroom for impromptu focus group sessions.
The candy runs the gamut, from time-honored classics to the latest wacky gummies to treats from yesteryear. Carol and her predecessors who have run the bulk foods department have also made their marks.
The pandemic led to a lot of new customers for Carol, as locals tried their hand at baking or making new recipes — or started looking for ways to trim their grocery bill.
“I almost hate to say it; I don’t want the grocery guys to get mad at me,” she says with a laugh. “But you can save a lot of money shopping at bulk food, especially with herbs and spices. I try to educate people: You can buy this little jar of cinnamon for $5, or you can get a whole bagful for that much.” For those looking to experiment, she often includes hand-written recipes or instructions for how customers might use some of the more obscure grains you can find at bulk foods.
Carol takes pride in working with nearly three dozen different vendors to supply her small section of Cutsforth’s, many of them locally-owned small businesses. Her section also caters to many with food allergies or food sensitivities, including gluten and dairy.
Cutsforth’s Market is located at 225 NE 2nd Avenue in Canby. For more information, call 503-266-2016 or visit cutsforths.com, or check out the Cutsforth’s Market Facebook page.

Landmark readies for restoration
In January 1946, the school district was consolidated with Canby, and the building and grounds ceased to be used as a school. Since that time the school site has served the needs of the community in providing a meeting place for family reunions, wedding receptions, Christmas and other parties, picnics, church groups, 4-H clubs, a mothers club, Extension Club, and monthly meetings of the Community Club.
In recent years, the building has come under the protection of the nonprofit Mark Prairie Historical Society, some members of whom are surviving Mark descendants. The schoolhouse was already in the midst of a major renovation when disaster struck. On Feb. 12, 2021, two large oak trees toppled over on the 120-year-old structure in the Presidents’ Day ice storm, causing massive damage.
Historical Society President Judi Aus, also a Mark descendant, said the board is working with Emerick Construction, a local contractor experienced in
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
On October 12, 1847, pioneer and Army veteran John Mark and his family came to the end of the Oregon Trail, arriving in Oregon City, where they traded a yoke of oxen and a wagon (or a mare, depending on who you ask) for 640 acres with a cabin on it south of the Molalla River.
The family consisted of John (52) and wife Fanny (50); two sons, four daughters, and two grandchildren. Their eldest son, Alexander, who was their second child and single, selected 320 acres south of his father’s farm.
Jacob Adams and Mary Ann selected 640 acres farther south but adjoining his brother-in-law. With the family soon covering such a large portion of the new territory, a settlement was slowly taking shape, and a new name, Mark Prairie, was taking hold.
Alexander built a Southern-style home, probably in remembrance of the family home in Virginia. The home was soon full of children: six of his own, from two different wives (his first wife, Sarah Jane, died at 23), three stepchildren, and four nieces and nephews.
Alexander, an advocate for education, provided tutors for his children and others in his home, later building a log schoolhouse near enough for all neighboring children to attend. After the Mark Prairie School District boundaries were established by the county officials, Alexander and his wife gave two acres of land to the district to be used for school purposes in May 1879.
The lumber for the school building was hauled from Cole’s sawmill on the south bank of the Molalla River, probably near the old river crossing and what is now Goode’s Bridge. The original building is still standing, and in fact has been changed very little over the years.
historical renovation projects, to rebuild the schoolhouse roof and repair the other damage. The renovation has been approved by the Clackamas County Historical Review Board, the plans for a new septic system have been approved by Clackamas County and are currently going through the permitting process so work can begin.
The interior will be refinished with tongue-in-groove planks milled by Pacific Timber Products in Molalla to mirror the original ceiling. The project will also include ADA upgrades in the bathroom and other areas of the building, including electrical and utility work.
While insurance is covering some of the damage, Aus said it is not covering the full scope of the work needed to fully restore the historic property. The society has received some grant funding to complete the project and is continuing to seek grants and community support.

“Smell that air, Fester! Like a tomb.”
Another of my favorites, this dark comedy
is based on the 1964 TV show! Starring Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci, the movie follows a gloomy but loving family of outcasts who live in a gothic mansion on the hill. Full of the macabre, cartoony violence, and biting social commentary, the jokes and goofs land like punches in this otherworldly romp. Rated PG-13.
CA s P er (1995)
“Who says there’s no such thing as ghosts?” In this dark fantasy dramedy, afterlife therapist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) move into a haunted mansion to exorcize ghosts for a greedy inheritor bent on finding treasure. It’s silly and slapstick, yet serious and contemplative–after all, you can’t have ghosts without death. Good for kiddos 6+. Rated PG.
Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

“Oh, look. Another glorious morning. Makes me sick!”
One of my favorite Halloween movies, it’s the story of three witches burned at the stake who return to terrorize the children of Salem, Mass. With a killer cast including Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Thora Birch, it’s whacky, spooky, and actionpacked. Rated PG, but with strong language and mature themes it’s more like PG-13.

“Who you gonna call?”
There’s nothing like it, pure and simple. A supernatural comedy starring a legendary cast, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, and more. Parapsychologists turn ghost hunters in New York City and end up saving the world. There’s ghosts, marshmallow giants, and so much nostalgia. Rated PG, but with strong language and mature themes it’s more like PG-13.

“Whatever you do, don’t fall asleep.” I binged all 7 of these movies last year, and they are equal parts horror and camp. They’re so bad that they’re good, you know? Imaginative, terrifying, funny, and always graphically violent, Robert Englund haunts my nightmares indefinitely! Adults only.
Rated R. AUN o F the D e AD (2004)
“Winchester?”
One of the very few horror comedy zombie movies, this movie has “killed” since released. Like Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s other movies, this plays on genre tropes and makes for geniuslevel comedy. Ultra violence and profuse profanity really make this a dirty pleasure movie. Adults only. Rated R.

Who Are Canby Rotarians?
Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary Clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.
The Rotary Club of Canby welcomes new members anytime during the year. People join a Rotary club for different reasons. Many decide to join Rotary for the friendship and sense of community. One of the two reasons Rotary began in 1905 was this desire for fellowship.
Other reasons people join a Rotary Club is business development, personal growth, and leadership development. In other words, there are personal benefits for becoming a Rotarian. Many are driven by the desire to contribute to their community and the world.
Every Rotarian is part of a larger community of 30,000 clubs in 194 nations.
Rotary has no secret handshake, no official creed, and no secret meetings or rituals. It is an open society of women and men who simply believe in helping others. We welcome the new members to Canby Rotary whose photographs are to the left.
Community service is central to the Rotary motto “Service Above Self,” which means unselfish volunteer service.
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
As I write this column, kids are heading back to school today. The beginning of a school year is so full of hope and expectation. Parents hope that their children will thrive and learn and be cared for. Children hope they will have friends, discover new things, and make their families proud. Teachers hope they will help everyone in their classroom to be safe, to learn to their potential, and to love exploring the world. Hope requires imagination for the way things could be.
Canby Rotary is a community organization that is rooted in service. We focus our efforts, both locally and globally, on making a difference. We take on issues like literacy, maternal and child health, clean drinking water, and helping to create a “polio-free” planet. We support local Canby endeavors like “Backpack Buddies”, Canby disaster preparedness, and providing college scholarships for area graduates.
We are also willing to imagine a better world. Rotary International’s theme for 2022-2023 is “Imagine Rotary”. It makes me think of a quote from Robert Kennedy.
“There are those who look at things the way they are and ask why…I dream of things that never were and ask why not?” Consider becoming part of an organization that imagines a better world and then works to make it so.

DICK’S CANBY FORD Meet Penny Hari
By Hilary Berg, Staff Writer
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median number of years that wage and salary workers had been with their current employer was 4.1 years in January 2020. For some employees, that tenure could seem like a lifetime, too short, or just right; it all depends on the job, boss, industry, pay, commute and more.
For Penny Hari, she’s the exception to rule, having worked at what is now Dick’s Canby Ford since 1992. She was 14 years old when the dealership, founded in 1957, accepted her application.
“Well, my mom was dating a gentleman, one of the mechanics at the time,” Penny recalls. “They were looking for somebody to come out and help wash cars after school and help take care of the lot. So I did that job during spring break, and I’ve stayed on ever since. I’ve worked in almost every department in this ‘little’ dealership.”
For three decades, Penny’s watched Canby Ford evolve and been a part of it, too. But, she says, one thing has always remained the same: the family feel of the company.
Now the assistant service manager, Penny helps keep the shop running, coordinating cars and trucks in need of maintenance or repair and also helping off-load brand new models right off the transport. Inside the garage, the technicians work on all manner of vehicles, performing a variety of work, from regular maintenance to transmission services and all points in between.
As technology continues to change, especially with the advent of hybrids and now all-electric versions — Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, E-Transit vans — Ford technicians receive regular training, keeping current with the latest certifications and know-how.
Inside the customer service office, Penny, alongside three service advisors and service manager, works with
clients, effectively and efficiently communicating all the details of service. Penny enjoys her job, especially being part of a solution. She explains, “It’s exciting to be a part of figuring out, with the technician, what the issue could be and then the final outcome, which should always be a happy customer.”
She is a happy Ford customer herself, currently driving a Focus but eyeing the new Maverick, one of the hottestselling pickups on the market, so much so there is a backlog on orders. But Penny can wait. She isn’t going anywhere. Dick’s Canby Ford is her home.
She hopes you will make the dealership your home, too, for buying, maintaining, and/or even repairing your own beloved Ford.
Dick’s Canby Ford is located at 24315 South Highway 99 East in Canby. Give Sales a call at (971) 312-0180, or visit their website at dickscanbyford.com.

Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners. “The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’” Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks.
Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls.
Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s. Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes its
own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross.
“We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom qual ity flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a cham pionship and wants to hoist a banner to their gymnasium ceiling.”
Elmer’s also manufactures, sells, installs and services custom poles, including two of the tallest in the state of Oregon, measuring 120 feet. “They’re monsters,” Anchel says with a laugh.
Elmer’s selection of kites, flags, banners, weather vanes, wind spin ners and other wind toys will amaze you. Looking to spruce up your home’s exterior? Stop into the retail store at 1332 NE Broadway in Portland, Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Or visit their website, elmersflag.com anytime.

Welcome To Cougar Country
Canby High School football ready to roll into 2022 season
Story and Photos By Tyler Francke, Contributor
Though Canby head football coach Jimmy Joyce is loath to use the word “rebuilding,” the Cougars certainly had a bit of, let’s say, retooling to do after graduating a core of talented seniors last season, including the state’s best lineman, Jacob Strand, who is now at OSU, co-Defensive Player of the Year Joe Brauckmiller, and three-year starting QB Mikey Gibson.
The losses were especially heavy on the front line, where the graduates included not only Strand, who was named the league’s Lineman of the Year, but also all-conference first-teamers Casey Langdale and Colin Kennedy.
That elite front five made Canby’s running game, led by backs Bryce Oliver (another graduate) and star sophomore Tyler Konold, pretty near impossible to stop — short of opponents parking their team bus on the line of scrimmage.
It’s different this year, with a new, younger, smaller, and less experienced crew holding down the front line. Rather than size and brute strength, Coach says he hopes to use his new line’s speed and misdirection to spring Tyler and other runners free.
Much of the Cougars’ success this season, particularly on offense, will key on Tyler Konold. The multi-talented running back led the 5A classification in rushing yards as a sophomore last
season, 1,650 on 162 attempts, for a video game-esque average of 10.2 yard per carry. On average, Tyler was giving the Cougs a first down every time he touched the ball and then some.
He was also third in the league with 18 rushing touchdowns. And that was while sharing carries with another star back, and the Cougs boasting an above-average passing game led by Gibson at quarterback and a corp of talented receivers, including Strand slotting in at tight end.
This year, Tyler’s the man.
“He’s a workhorse, and the great thing about him: He runs as hard in the fourth quarter as he does in the first,” Coach says. “He understands that he’s going to have to carry a bigger load this year. Last year, we aimed for 15 to 18 rushing attempts a game. This year, it will have to be around 22 to 25 or more. We don’t want him carrying the ball 30 times a game — but he knows he’s going to carry the ball, and he’s going to carry it a lot.”
Coach Joyce and his staff said they could tell how special their young back was from his very first workout in the summer of 2020. But it wasn’t until his debut at the varsity level last season that the rest of the state got the memo.
That will not be the case this year, with his name at the top of most coaches’ and media outlets’ lists of preseason favorites for league MVP and Offensive Player of the Year.
“I told him, ‘You’re going to be the best running back in the state, and you’re going to be the best decoy in the state,’” Coach says. “Because there’s not many teams that are going to line up against us and not have eyes on him everywhere he goes. I mean, if he goes and gets a hot dog at halftime, he’s probably going to have a few defenders on the tail.”
That will be the biggest question facing Tyler Konold this year, and to a somewhat lesser extent, the offensive line on which he will rely: Can they replicate last year’s unrivaled success in the running game — without the benefit of being an unknown? With, in fact, opposing coaches and defenders having spent the offseason studying your game tape and scheming ways to stop you?
MEET THE ATHLETE PROUDLY SPONSORED BY ROTH HEATING & COOLING 78 To advertise with us, call 503.825.2111
The junior running back is ready for it, Coach Joyce says.
“We have a tough schedule this year, and we want him to stay healthy and keep that going,” Coach says. “But I have no doubt in my mind that he’s going to be just as explosive and beneficial to us as he was last year.”
The other big question facing the entire team is how quickly and smoothly they can acclimate and gel in the wake of graduating so many seniors in key positions last year. This year’s squad will have very few seniors and will rely heavily on juniors and sophomores — many of whom, due to the pandemic, have far less experience with high-level, organized football than they otherwise would have.
Coach estimates the Cougars will field the youngest and one of the least experienced teams in their league — perhaps even in the entire 5A classification.
“We are a super young team that is still building depth,” Coach Joyce said after the team’s first game, a 21-18 road win over Mountain View High School in Bend on September 2. “We had 17 guys make their first varsity start tonight.
In 100-degree heat after a three-hour school bus ride with no AC. In many cases, those guys saw their first varsity action ever. Happy to see this young team start to gel.”
Other key players for the Cougs this season will include senior Braden Snoderly, who led the Cougars in tackles (second in the league) last season and earned a first-team all-NWOC West nod as a defensive lineman. This year, Canby will look for him to head their young offensive line at guard and lead their defense as a hard-nosed linebacker.
Slotting alongside him will be another of the Cougs’ rare seniors, Davis Hagen, and junior offensive lineman/linebacker Gideon Noss. Junior
linebacker Andy Soles, who is also expected to put in some shifts at tight end on offense, will play a major role after a committed summer offseason in the weight room.
In the backfield will be Konold, who earned an honorable mention on defense last season, in addition to the devastation he wrought on the other side of the ball, and senior wide receiver/ defensive back Landon Sprague, a standout wrestler who brings a high level of physicality to his play.
Coach expects to split quarterback duties, at least in the early part of the season, between two juniors, Parker Ackerman and Gage Millar, both of whom bring different styles of play calling and have the ability to scramble. Their receiving corps will include Sprague, Soles, and junior wide receiver Cohen Hall, one of Mikey Gibson’s favorite targets in the latter part of the 2021 season.

Denis Kurudimov, owner of NW Breeze, has a simple mission: “We want to have people breathing healthier air,” he says. “Especially nowadays, with a lot of people working from home, the air quality in your home is more important than ever.”
Denis and his specialized team work with many clients who are sensitive to allergens, dust, and other air quality issues. His results have even been endorsed by many of the Portland area’s top doctors. “We work with a lot of doctors and the best mold remediation company in the Northwest,” he says. “We’ve worked with some of the most sensitive people, and the immediate change we have seen it have on our customers is what has inspired us to keep doing this work.”
Air duct cleaning is not always the easiest service to sell, he admits. For many homeowners, it’s one of those things that is out of sight, out of mind. “A lot of people just leave it and never get it done,” he says. Plus, unfortunately it’s an industry that can be prone to scams. “It’s one of those jobs that’s something the homeowner can’t really see,” Denis says. “There are trust issues with that. That’s why we are as transparent as possible. We show exactly what we’re going to do, the tools that we use and how it all works.”
The tools and processes they use are pretty cool, so it’s no surprise that they like to show them off. The process
is called “negative air suction,” which uses a giant vacuum cleaner. The vacuum itself is about half the size of a standard pickup truck or van! The hose attaches to the furnace duct. Once it’s turned on, it pulls an estimated 1,800 square feet of air every 60 seconds.
Denis and his team then go to different registers and access points in the home to agitate the dust and debris, sucking it away and leaving behind only a perfectly clean duct. Of course, some debris may be too large to be sucked out by their massive vacuum, so that stuff gets cleaned out by hand.
Denis says he has seen it all. “We’ve found everything from necklaces, bracelets, a Taco Bell cup from the 1980s, $1,000 in old hundreds and twenties in a glass jar,” he says. “Literally anything you can imagine that can fit in there, I’ve found it and pulled it out.” There’s also construction debris, especially for newer homes or those recently remodeled. “A lot of times, those vents are treated as garbage cans during construction,” he says.
Denis has been in the business for about five years, and he started working for an HVAC company as a teenager. “He taught me everything I know about air duct cleaning,” says Denis. The day after his 18th birthday, he walked down to City Hall and got a business license for his own company. “I knew what I wanted to do,” he says. “I just thought I’d try going into business on my own and see how it goes. It’s been going pretty well. Especially the last two or three years, it’s really grown.”
NW Breeze in the Portland metro area, but also McMinnville, Salem, Corvallis, and Bend. Duct cleaning is recommended every three to five years, depending on your HVAC system and allergies and sensitivities.
Now that it’s autumn, it’s more important than ever to give your ducts a thorough cleaning! Let the amazing professionals at NW Breeze make your air clean again so you can breathe deeply and stay healthy.

Oh autumn, what a wonderful time of year! A time to break out all my favorite sweaters just as the leaves are turning into vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. And best of all, the arrival of Halloween, my favorite holiday. My nickname as a kid was Little Miss Mess Maker, as carving pumpkins has always been my favorite Halloween activity–one time I even recreated a horror movie with gourd guts. While carving pumpkins is extremely popular, most people don’t know the myth behind the mess and tradition.
Long ago in a small Irish town, a drunkard named Stingy Jack earned his moniker after tricking the Devil himself. Jack was notorious in his little town, and Satan had heard of his mischievous deeds. Jack may have been known for being a drunken scoundrel—scuttered and bollocksed—but he was also a clever lad, so he convinced the Devil to take him to his favorite pub as a last request and to pay for the bill. When the tab came due, Jack convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin so Jack could pay for the drinks, then they could leave for the underworld.
The Devil was fooled. And instead of paying up, Jack dropped the coin into his pocket alongside a silver crucifix, trapping the fiery foe in the form of a coin. The Devil begged Stingy Jack to
release him. And so Jack released him, but only on the condition that the Devil would not bother him for another year, and should Jack die, Satan could not claim his soul.
True to his word, the Devil didn’t return for a whole year. When the Devil finally reappeared to claim his soul, Jack tricked the Devil to climb a fruit tree and pick him a last meal to eat before traveling to Hell. Once the Devil reached the top of the tree, Jack carved a cross into the bark of the tree trunk, trapping the Devil high among the branches. Again, Satan begged Jack for freedom, but this time, Jack made the Devil promise to not bother him for another 10 years. Of course, the Devil agreed to his terms and was freed.
Jack died soon thereafter. Because of his mischief and sins, he was denied entrance to Heaven. Upset by the trickery and scheming, and true to his word of not claiming his soul, Satan denied Jack entrance into Hell, too. As a parting gift, the Devil gifted Jack a lump of burning coal to light his way and sent him off into the night. Jack placed the burning coal in a hollowed out turnip, and he has roamed the earth ever since. The Irish began calling this eerie creature “Jack of the Lantern,” or “Jack O’Lantern” for short.

terrifying faces into turnips, potatoes, beets, or rutabagas, and lighting and displaying them near doors or windows to frighten away Stingy Jack and other evil spirits. In the mid-1800s, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the jacko’-lantern tradition with them when they moved to the U.S. And they soon found that pumpkins, a large fruit native to America, made for perfect jacko’-lanterns.
Since then, there have been many attempts in popular culture to revive this long-forgotten tradition of carving jack-o’-lanterns from turnips. In 2015, due to a severe pumpkin shortage caused by severe rain, the charity English Heritage called for Brits to rekindle their
love for turnip carving and return to the original tradition of turnip jack-o’lanterns. English Heritage even went so far as to install many ghoulish turnip jack-o’-lanterns at Dover Castle to inspire others to do the same. Whether carving trunips will become popular again is still unknown.
There are, however, many benefits to turnip carving over pumpkin carving. There’s no stringy pumpkin mess or seeds to clean out. Turnips are quite small and portable, so they can actually be hung like little lanterns. Also, turnips are cheap! So you can afford to make dozens and dozens if you’re so inclined. If they’re careful with a knife, older kids can carve a turnip by themselves because they’re so much simpler and smaller. The red-white color and eerie roots are scarier than pumpkins. After you scoop out the insides of the turnip, you can make mashed turnips. Yum!
And because they’re available year round, you can carve turnips for more than just jack-o’-lanterns — votive
holders, artwork or whatever you want. So, there you have it. I love it when holidays and their fun-filled activities have such a rich history as Halloween and the Stingy Jack origin of pumpkin carving. And the fact that the history is also a ghost story is even more fun! Whether you choose to carve a pumpkin or turnip, I hope you and yours have a safe, fun, messy, and memorable holiday.

A Streak of Greatness
By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
If you’re a fan of college football, doubtless names like the “Crimson Tide,” “Fighting Irish,” and “Buckeyes” require no explanation. They speak for themselves. However, if you don’t follow NCAA Division III football, you might not realize that one of the nation’s most successful football programs resides right down the street in McMinnville, Oregon. None of the haloed Division I teams cited above can match the accomplishments of the Linfield University Wildcats.
It started on an autumn day, October 6, 1956. Great things often have humble beginnings, and for Linfield football this was certainly the case. While it would have been more dramatic if the Wildcats’ win that day had been defined by a scintillating highlight moment—a miraculous last minute catch in the endzone, or a gutty goal line stand—such was not the case. Linfield had just suffered back-to-back losing seasons, and the 1956 campaign looked like more of the same. The opponent that Saturday was the Seattle Ramblers, a semi-pro team on a tear, who had defeated the Wildcats the previous year, and dominated the conference titles over the last 14 seasons. Against the odds, Linfield managed to defeat the Ramblers 13-7. From that game on, the Wildcats wouldn’t lose another game that season. This win over the Ramblers marked the beginning of what has become known as the “Streak.”
Paul Ward, who played guard on the ’56 team, recalled: “Once we had a winning season, we knew we could win. We had to experience it and build up over the years.” For a team composed of small town kids and Korean War veterans attending college on the GI Bill, they had no idea that their victory over the Ramblers
that fateful October day would be the start of the “Streak.” The “Streak,” which has now extended to 65 consecutive winning seasons as of 2021, is the longest active winning streak in NCAA history at any level. No other team is even close to this record, with the next in line coming in at 42. In retrospect, Ward admits no one at the time had any idea of what was to come. “I guarantee you that in 1956, nobody had any idea there would be any kind of streak,” he said. “We were just happy that we could get through the season with a win.”It was coach Paul Durham’s team that started the “Streak,” but it is a testament to the pride, tradition, and dedication to excellence, fostered by successive coaches over the last six decades, that is responsible for Linfield’s relentless march through the NCAA history books. Looming at the forefront of the Mount Rushmore of Linfield football coaches is Ad Rutschman.
Hired as head football coach in 1968, Rutschman continued the winning tradition until his retirement in 1991. Rutschman not only coached football, but baseball as well. Rutschman is still the only coach at any level to win national titles in both football and baseball. In his 24 seasons as Linfield’s head football coach, Rutschman won three NAIA national championships (1982, 1984, 1986), and 15 Northwest Conference titles. Perhaps Rutschman’s most epic victory occurred in the 1984 national championship game, where Linfield trailed Northwestern 22-0 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Against all odds, the Wildcats roared back to win the game 33-22.
In addition to coaching football and baseball, Rutschman also served as Athletic Director for 25 years, during which

time the school’s athletic facilities were greatly improved. Among these improvements were two new gymnasiums, a baseball stadium, and the 26,600 square foot field house named in honor of Rutschman and his wife Joan, for their dedication and service over 27 years to Linfield University.
From 1992 to 2005, Linfield’s football program was led by Ed Langsdorf (1992-95) and Jay Locey (1996 -2005). Both coaches kept up the winning tradition. Langsdorf’s brief tenure
resulted in a record of 32-9-1 and three championships. Locey’s tally at the end of his Linfield career was a stellar 84-18 and six championships, including one NCAA Division III title. During one stretch of his impressive career, Locey coached the team to a 41-game win streak.
In 2006, the future of Linfield football was turned over to Joseph Smith, and he has not only continued the “Streak” but pushed the school into the NCAA record books. Under Smith’s leadership Linfield has amassed an incredible record of 138-27, with a .836 win percentage, the highest percentage of any coach in Linfield history.
When Smith, a former defensive back for Linfield in the 90s, took over in 2006, he was well aware of the legacy he was responsible for and described his role
as that of a “caretaker.” With Locey’s departure, Smith understood that the decision to hire him had been carefully considered. “It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained. “We had to maintain who we are. If we lost that, we’re just another school.”
The Smith era at Linfield has been nothing short of remarkable. For a school that offers no football scholarships, a modest budget for athletics, and typically doesn’t attract big time recruits with NFL aspirations and talent, the question remains: “How does Linfield do it?” How do the Wildcats continue to churn out victories, winning seasons, and championships? Ultimately, how do they keep the “Streak” alive?
Smith credits a number of factors, foremost of which is the sense of family that permeates the entire Wildcat program. Caring for one another. This intense trust that grows from respect and brotherhood is interwoven with a blue-collar work ethic of toughness and a thirst for excellence. Ryan Carlson, a defensive star on the 90s era teams, sums it up beautifully: “Once you’re in our Linfield family, you’re connected to 60 years of people who have had those core principles shape their young lives. Those life experiences continue to breed an incredible amount of love and loyalty
towards the program.” As inspiration to his players, Smith periodically invites guest speakers to address the team. One of the speakers, Bretton Brown, an Army Ranger and a friend of Smith’s, imparted words from the Rangers’ credo that resonated with the team: “We are Men of Action. We do the heavy lifting. We are the walls, and we are the hammer.”
So this fall, as Linfield continues on its historic march through the NCAA record books, take a moment to appreciate what six decades of commitment to family, grit, and excellence can achieve.
