WiFi vs. Internet

What’s the Difference and Why Does it Matter?

What is WiFi?

WiFi technology is extremely popular and available just about everywhere. Whether you’re grabbing a cup of coffee, out shopping, or enjoying a family pizza night, there’s likely a WiFi hotspot available. You may hear people talking about “find the WiFi” or not being able to “get onto WiFi.” Most of the time, the issue is that they can’t access internet content on a laptop, smartphone, or other device.

That then raises the question: is WiFi the same as the internet? The short answer is that no, it’s not. With home networks becoming more sophisticated all the time with more and more connected devices, it’s helpful to have an understanding of the difference between the two.

While internet service is the physical connection from an ISPs central office using infrastructure like fiber optic strands, WiFi is the wireless broadcasting of some of that signal through the air. Devices can then connect to that signal without needing any cords to access the internet to stream, game, video chat, email, and more. The "wireless" connection is made possible by several pieces of WiFi equipment wired in to the internet: a modem and a router. A modem actually connects your home network to your ISP, while a router lets your devices use that internet connection. In some cases, a modem and router may be combined into one piece of equipment.

The WiFi router uses radio technology to broadcast a unique name (also known as a service set identifier, or SSID), which you or your ISP chooses when the router is first set up. When you’re on your laptop or other device, you can often see a list of other WiFi router names nearby such as yours and your neighbors’. Select your router name from the list, enter the router’s password, and just like that, you’re connected to WiFi. As long as your router is properly connected to your modem, you should then be able to access any online service or go to any website using your web browser.

Is connecting to WiFi the same as connecting to the Internet?

The short answer is no, not technically. Just because you’re connected to your WiFi router does not mean that you are also connected to the internet. You might notice from time to time that your computer says you’re connected to WiFi, but you are not able to access any websites or send email. This may mean that your router is having trouble communicating with your modem, preventing you from accessing the internet. But rest assured, DirectLink's Tech Support Team is ready to help troubleshoot connection issues should they occur.

So the next time you “get on WiFi,” you’ll know there’s a bit more to it. You are actually connecting to a router that is then connecting to the modem that is then connecting to the internet.

Discover Winter’s Treasures

As a kid, I always enjoyed it when it snowed, especially when we’d get to stay home from school. But, of course, as an adult, I am not a fan of the fluffy white stuff, with the potential for icy roads, power outages, and other headaches.

I’ve always disliked the shorter days and longer, colder nights, too, impatiently waiting for spring to arrive with warmer temps and the budding beauty that begins to emerge.

In contrast, the people of Norway deal with cold temps and short days to a much greater degree than what we experience in Oregon. In fact, the Norwegians have a saying — based on the 1973 book “Coast To Coast” by Alfred Wainwright — that keeps their spirits up during winter: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” The discovery of this saying gave me pause and had me reevaluating my distaste for Old Man Winter.

For those who know me, it’s common to find me in a T-shirt and shorts during all seasons — with the occasional sweatshirt if the temperature drops too low. Sales meetings and community gatherings do demand pants and a nice shirt, but the moment I get back home, back in my comfy clothes, I go.

Taking the Norwegian saying to heart, I recently changed my attitude. Dressed in a heavy jacket, stocking cap, and warm pants, I wandered outside, in search of winter’s charm.

After a quick trip around our property, I was amazed at the amount of activity from the birds and squirrels. The air was crisp with a slightly smoky flavor from our neighbor’s wood stove. The bare trees looked majestic with their branches reaching in every direction, patiently awaiting spring’s symphony of colors.

I now realize the importance of winter, a time when nature takes a respite to recharge itself before the busyness of spring.

On my walk back to the house, the sun began to set. The sky’s amazing display of blue, purple, red, orange, and yellow truly convinced me of winter’s quiet splendor.

As February begins winter’s winddown, be sure to explore the season’s hidden treasures. Just remember to wear warm clothing.

Sincerely,

P.S. If your business services local residents, give me a call at 503-825-2111 to see how partnering with us will put you in the homes of everyone in Canby and Aurora.

Cody McEldowney THE FACE OF CANBY MUSIC

Cody McEldowney walked into the Canby Music store in June of 2022 to answer a help wanted ad and now, less than a year later, “is basically the face of Canby Music,” states the owner, Brian Haines. A personable fella, you’ll find the store’s “retail guy” poised at the front desk ringing up sales, or on the sales floor attending to customers, inventory, and stock displays. A skilled drummer and formally-educated sound technician, Cody teaches drum lessons and frequently advises customers on amps, cables, mics, and more. “I’m able to use my knowledge to point them in the right direction for what they’re trying to do,” he relates. Earning a 4.0 GPA in his college courses, Cody is all set to receive the Certificate of Completion for Music Technology. Just three weeks on the job, Cody was asked to drum for Canby Music’s Annual Anniversary Party which

featured live outdoor music. And after only a couple months, he was included on Canby Music’s four-person team that participated in school rental nights organized for students to try out instruments and decide which they liked best. “He was a really big help,” Brian claims.

Cody enjoys playing drums in an original rock and roll band, The Sonic Splits. Cody will also celebrate his 30th birthday this month on February 8th. “I’m very happy he’s part of the team,” Brian says. “We are rockin’ and rollin’ into 2023 and we’re all the better because he’s part of it!”

Canby Music is located at 590 NW 1st Avenue in Canby. For more information, call 503-263-2263 or visit canbymusic.com.

TOUCHDOWN AT FOB!

Since the NFL extended the 2022–2023 season to 18 weeks, fans will be enjoying football into mid-February this year. For FOB Taproom owner Steve Puga, there is only one team in the league: the Dallas Cowboys. His love of the NFC East institution can be seen throughout the bar and on his person, proudly displaying the iconic navy and silver star on most of his wardrobe.

The Texas team is an unusual passion for a native of Portland whose other favorite teams include the Portland Timbers and Trail Blazers, and the Seattle Mariners — yet none of these Northwest brands come even close to the devotion Steve has for “America’s Team.”

His fascination started with his father — he grew up in “The Big D” — who would bring his young son to the former Texas Stadium for memory-making games. They say, when it comes to sports, a childhood connection often leads to a lifetime of fandom.

It’s no surprise Steve offers large screens for sporting events at his Canby bar, not to mention a great atmosphere during playoffs and especially championships — no matter the sport. For the

NFL’s final competition, Feb. 12, FOB plans to host a potluck with new beers on tap. Steve and his knowledgeable staff will be working hard to ensure all patrons enjoy “The Big Game” — despite Dallas not making it past San Francisco in the playoffs.

The friendly workers are just a part of the draw to FOB. The ambiance, the relaxed seating, the global, hand-curated beer selection, the diversions — pinball, shuffleboard, Canby’s original trivia night — and the devoted patrons themselves are what make the taproom so inviting to regulars and newbies alike. Steve welcomes everyone — 21 and older — through his doors.

Besides sports, holidays are also celebrated. This Valentine’s Day, FOB will tap several local pastry stouts for customers to explore. Just weeks later, live music will be performed by a group of talented Canby musicians who’ve already begun learning some Irish diddies for the St. Paddy’s Day party.

Just be sure to wear something green, unless you’re a diehard Cowboys fan, which means blue and silver, all day, every day. Visit FOB to see for yourself.

Club Fit offers wellness center, functional medicine, physical therapy

Gyms and fitness centers are a dime a dozen. There are a variety of options, all offering similar programming, similar training, and with a few exceptions, similar amenities. Sure, some have pools and courts, while others don’t. Some offer, more or less, group training and/or specialty classes, while others focus more on weight training. Generally speaking, a gym is a gym, unless you choose a membership at Club Fit in Canby.

A locally- and privately-owned fitness center, Club Fit is not a chain. There’s no sales team pressuring membership. To the contrary, owners Ron and Barb Raines work hard to screen potential members in an effort to maintain clients genuinely dedicated to meeting their fitness goals.

Fitness is a serious business, after all. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the experience or have fun while working out. The membership base at Club Fit is family-friendly, and everyone is welcome. Regardless of your current level of fitness, you will never be judged nor made to feel uncomfortable or out of place, but you do need to show up with goals and be ready to work. Bring a friend and see what happens. Ron is an amazing guy. A retired Marine and accomplished triathlete (who is accredited through ACE, ACSM, AFAA, TRX, Spinning, and CrossFit Level 1), he has a genuine passion for working with people looking to improve their fitness and overall wellness levels. With all of his certifications, he is willing and capable of coaching just about anyone, especially those looking to receive functional training, life skills, occupational rehabilitation, military readiness training, and personal training for specific competitions and sports of all types. While most fitness centers offer generalized group training or some limited personal training, Ron offers highly-personalized training designed to meet your specific needs and goals. In addition, Club Fit’s fitness professionals are able

to handle special needs and different levels of exerciser. They have a fit pro for everyone!

Club Fit is much more than just another fitness center! You are able to come in and work out on your own, at your own pace, following your own program, join a group, or hire a professional! But consider this, with Ron’s years of experience, both as an athlete himself and as a trainer, there is so much more that he has to offer

you. As the general population ages, our fitness needs change, and Ron prides himself on offering cutting-edge programs designed to keep us all in the game for as long as possible. He focuses not only on proper form to avoid injury, but also on care, recovery, and rehabilitation. It’s all about educating members to help increase their longevity, to keep them moving, and keep them smiling!

When considering a Club Fit membership, Ron will ask, “What is your purpose? What fitness goals have you set for yourself and how do you plan to accomplish them?” This is in no way to discourage anyone from joining; it’s simply a reflection of Ron’s passion for fitness and his desire to help all members meet their goals, which are essential in measuring success. A commitment is necessary and education is part of that.

Locally-owned and -operated by local people passionate about fitness and the community. Club Fit has worked with multiple charities (Young Life, Kiwanis, Wounded Warrior Project, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, The Canby Center, The Canby Chamber of Commerce) and has sponsored many local high school teams; Ron is currently coaching the Canby High School Softball Team. Whether you are a beginner, have never been to a fitness center, are a top athlete looking to prepare for an upcoming event, or are someone with an injury or disability, there is no place better than Club Fit to set out on your fitness journey. And if your situation requires more expertise than what Ron can provide, North Lake Physical Therapy subleases a space on-site. Stop in today and invest in yourself! Friends Gather Here

HEY, AURORA! Are you looking for a place with amazing food, awesome drinks, and a homey neighborhood atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more? Well allow me to inform you that the search is over, and this fantastic place is right on Hwy 99 in downtown Aurora. The Aurora Colony Pub has been located in the heart of the town for what seems like forever, so you’ve definitely seen it. You may have even been there before, but if you haven’t gone recently you may not recognize it. Especially as they are starting Acoustic Thursdays on March 3rd!

Seven years or so ago, before Janae and Corey Barton purchased it from the previous owners, it was simply a humble local pub. After taking over, the Bartons have revitalized, remodeled, and renovated the place, turning it into a much more family-friendly establishment. Of course, the full bar and all of the usual pub activities and games are still available, but until 9:00pm kids and families are able to enjoy the establishment as well.

As the regulars who have frequented the pub for years will attest, it’s always been known for great service, great drinks, and a friendly atmosphere, and they certainly have gained even more regulars since the upgrades. They’ve improved upon every aspect of the business in the hopes of bringing in a wider customer base.

For starters, they’ve added a lot of amazing food to their already great menu. They still have all the traditional favorites that the pub has a reputation for, including their legendary made-from-scratch clam chowder, halibut fish and chips, fried razor clams and oysters, burgers, and hot sandwiches.

To give their customers even more to choose from, they continue to offer their commercial broaster! This is not a common piece of equipment in most pubs, and there are very few places in the area where you can get the delectable broasted chicken. The broaster works by deep-frying and pressure cooking simultaneously, which gives the chicken a nice crispy coating outside while maintaining all the natural moisture inside. If for no other reason, you must stop by to taste this

culinary treat, because I guarantee that you’ll want to come back for more.

If the tantalizing aroma of the broasted chicken doesn’t have your mouth watering when you walk in the door, why not try out one of their new pasta selections? Choose from homemade Spaghetti, Triple Mac and Cheese, or the Pub Fettuccini Alfredo, each made from scratch with fresh ingredients. They also have some amazing weekly specials, such as All You Can Eat Spaghetti Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, and Prime Rib every Saturday night. This rises far beyond your standard pub fare!

For those who may be watching their diet or have a sensitivity to gluten, don’t worry about missing out. Another new addition that has quickly become one of their more

popular items is the Bacon and Cheeseburger Salad. Intrigued? Simply take all of the same delicious ingredients of a standard bacon cheeseburger, nix the bread, serve it on a bed of fresh lettuce, and voila! You have a lighter and yet equally satisfying meal to enjoy. There’s also a whole slew of other delicious entrée salads to choose from, and they even offer gluten-free buns and beer.

The Aurora Colony Pub is a local favorite that you won’t want to miss out on. Bring the whole family in for an awesome meal, then stay to explore Aurora’s charming downtown. Or if you’re looking for that traditional adult-only pub atmosphere, come on in at 9:00pm for some good times. You’re guaranteed to enjoy the great food, great drinks, and great service, and you’ll definitely want to come again!

Pure Seed A WINNING FORMULA

Like billions of people around the globe, Crystal RoseFricker found herself glued to her television screen during the coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar last November and December. But unlike most soccer fans, Crystal was paying special attention to one very particular detail of one of the world’s largest sporting events: the quality of the playing surface.

That’s because Crystal is president of Pure Seed, a global leader in grass seed research, production, marketing, and services based in Canby, and her company provided tens of thousands of pounds of grass seed for the eight stadiums and 71 practice fields that formed the World Cup campus in Qatar. It was a monumental task, made possible by years of research and development. But the result, incredibly, was that Oregon-grown turf was spotlighted in one of the world’s biggest sports stages. (One might even say it was the stage.)

An estimated 5 billion viewers tune in to the 2022 World Cup, which was eventually claimed by Argentina, led by the legendary Lionel Messi. “It’s pretty cool,” Crystal admits. “You know, the grass varieties are sort of like our children, so it’s kind of like watching them perform well in some of the top events and some of the top athletic facilities in the world. And, just feeling like we had a small part in helping that event to be a success and helping those players to reach their potential and achieve their dreams, it’s pretty cool. And a big deal for Oregon as well.”

Pure Seed is a wholesale producer of commercial turf and forage grasses, founded by Crystal’s father, Bill Rose. It began as a grass seed farm, one of more than 1,000 in Oregon, and a cattle ranch called Roselawn, which is now run by Bill’s son, Ed Rose, and his family. When Crystal was still a teenager, her dad started a small grass seed testing and research company that she now runs. And despite growing (pun intended) into one of the largest private grass-breeding companies in the country,

it remains a relatively small and tightly knit operation led by three breeders: Crystal herself, her son Austin Fricker, and Dr. Melodee Fraser, who is based at Pure Seed’s research farm in North Carolina.

Over the course of five decades, the company has supplied grass seed for golf courses, football fields, and soccer pitches around the globe — in upwards of 50 different countries. New varieties are tested at Pure Seed’s research farms in Oregon and North Carolina, carefully bred to match each customer’s unique needs. “We do production with hundreds of growers of our varieties, and then we bring them into our warehouses to blend and package them,” Crystal explains. “Sometimes, we coat the seed or treat the seed and then ship that out to distributors, and then they ship it to the end user around the world.”

In the case of the 2022 World Cup, the opportunity came thanks to a collaboration with another turf grass producer, Atlas Turf International. While it was Pure Seed that developed the perennial ryegrass variety used for the overseeding, it was Atlas Turf that provided the warm-season and salt-tolerant grass well-suited to the region called seashore paspalum that was used as the base turf. As you could probably guess, growing a lush, verdant lawn of green grass is not as easy in the deserts of Qatar–where summertime temperatures routinely top 110 degrees Fahrenheit–as it is in temperate Oregon. In addition to

Crystal Rose-Fricker

the hot climate, aridity, and soil conditions, turfing contractors for the World Cup also had to contend with the challenges of shade caused by the partially closed stadium roofs and the rigors of 64 premier-level soccer matches played over the course of less than a month. “You go there, and you’re like, ‘How can grass grow here?’” Crystal says. “And that’s why one of the two main species is seashore paspalum, because it’s heat- and salt-tolerant. There is a lot of our seashore paspalum seed on golf courses over there. The other species is perennial ryegrass, a cool-season turfgrass, that we also grow in Oregon. It can take the heat for a while, but it is more suitable when the winter temperatures set in. So since the games were held during the winter months, they overseeded the paspalum with the perennial ryegrass.”

Shipping the perennial ryegrass seed in time for the World Cup was another logistical challenge. It was shipped in May via ocean carrier, arriving in mid-July. Once in Qatar, groundskeepers had a 10-day window to plant the seed over the paspalum in October so it would be ready for the start of the tournament on November 20. And it’s in such conditions that the perennial ryegrass blends developed by Pure Seed really shine. The seed is highly prized by premier athletic venues, including football stadiums here in Oregon, because it grows quickly and thickly, Crystal says, germinating in just three days and forming a nice, dense, and vibrantly green turf in a few weeks. For the World Cup, Pure Seed had to work with teams at each stadium

to develop just the right blend of ryegrass and underlying grasses, with different countries and their avid fan bases preferring slightly different shades of green or other characteristics.

Crystal Rose-Fricker, President of Pure Seed and Pure-Seed Testing, was one of the few women in the 1980’s to pave the path for women in the grass seed industry. Her father, Bill Rose, started the company Turf Seed in 1970 (now Pure Seed) and PST in 1974. Crystal started working at the age of 13, and from there began down her destined path to becoming a plant breeder. She received her Masters Degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics in 1985 and dove head first into the seed industry.

“We went back and looked at the varieties of seed that we sent, and it represented a total of about 13 of our growers in Oregon,” Crystal says. “So, it was really cool to see our grass over there being played on by teams from all those different countries and just really gratifying to think that it came from here in Oregon. And it seemed like the grass held up pretty well. I didn’t see or hear any complaints.” For more information about Pure Seed, visit their website at pureseed.com, or follow the company on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

THE VETERAN

Navy Machinist’s Mate Second Class Petty Officer (MM2)

Dan Mishler is a man of few words, but one you always want on your team. He’s the kind of guy who is first to show up and last to leave. He always does his job to the absolute best of his ability, never complains, never calls in sick, and never calls attention to his accomplishments.

At 63, he is the kind of man who still works harder and puts in more hours than most people half his age, and when speaking about his time in the service, there is not an ounce of boastfulness.

Dan was not the first in his family to serve his country. His grandfather was in the Army and fought in WWII (and was nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor but turned it down). His father was in the Navy. One uncle was in the Army and another in the Marine Corps (who fought in Vietnam). So, Dan comes from a long line of dedicated service members and he grew up with that kind of mentality. Although his folks never pushed him to enter, when it came time to go to college his father put to him a simple proposition: we will gladly pay for you to go to school if you can provide a valid reason why

you shouldn’t go into the service. He enlisted shortly thereafter.

He entered in 1979 as an MMFN–Fireman, Machinist’s Mate Striker–although the position really had little to do with being a fireman. As a Machinist’s Mate, his primary duties kept him in the engine room and revolved around operating and maintaining steam turbines, gears, and auxiliary machinery to sustain the ship’s propulsion. His first tour was on the USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37), a destroyer tender, the first of her class, designed to repair other ships. Constantly out at sea, by

the time he was 22 he had traveled the world 3 times over! His second tour was on his dream ship, the USS New Jersey (BB-62), America’s most decorated battleship. Unfortunately, due to some political decisions made at the time, opportunities were limited for people in his position, and in 1985 he got out to pursue other interests.

He has never regretted his service though. On the contrary, he attributes, in many ways, the man he is today to that experience. It gives him a sense of pride, even if he is incredibly humble about voicing it. Next time you see Dan Mishler around Canby—if you can ever catch him when he’s not working—don’t make a fuss about it, but shake the man’s hand, and thank him for his selflessness and dedication to his country. In our current political climate, if we had more people like him leading, we’d be far better off.

From all of us at Active Media, thank you, Dan, for your service.

Swoon-Worthy Valentine’s Delights

Say “I love you” with lovingly crafted Puddin’ River creations

Let’s be honest, there are very few people in this world who aren’t smitten with chocolate. In all of its decadent varieties, forms, and configurations, it is one of the most popular food types and flavors in the world. That said, no two brands share the exact same recipes or flavor profiles, and there is a distinct difference between overly sweet, massproduced chocolates, and carefully crafted artisanal brands.

Some may argue there is no such thing as “bad” chocolate, but there are certainly degrees of greatness, and there is a true art to making superior chocolate. One brand that has absolutely perfected the art, and should be at the top of everyone’s Valentine’s Day list, comes from our humble little town of Canby.

Puddin’ River Chocolates & Confections is the pride and joy of owner/founder Teresa Sasse. It all began back around 2003 when she left the deli and catering industry to explore new avenues of creativity. Chocolate offered endless possibilities, and so began a love affair which would indefinitely provide an outlet to feed her passion. And while she finds great joy in producing some of the best chocolates you’ll find anywhere in the world, it’s not just about that. Teresa is exceedingly passionate too about the history of chocolate; where the cocoa beans are sourced from and who the farmers are who harvest them.

Her chocolate is a unique one-of-a-kind blend, composed of several different types, all from reputable sources in Europe, and all devoid of harmful additives found in so many domestic brands. Every product she offers is a perfected recipe resulting from years of passionate trial and error, research, and love. Taste is subjective. We all have favorite desserts, and it’s easy to argue the merits of one brand or type over another. But in the case of Puddin’ River, there’s no argument: it’s simply the best.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, so if you haven’t experienced what Puddin’ River Chocolates & Confections has to offer, now is the perfect time! Surprise your significant other with something unique, something exquisite, something

special—like they are to you. Valentine’s Assorted Truffle collections, foiled heart collections, gift bags filled with chocolate teddy bears or message hearts, gift boxes with hazelnut and toffee; the list goes on! And they’re all made by hand using Teresa’s amazing recipes. No matter what you choose, your loved one is guaranteed to feel genuinely appreciated because you took the time to find something exceptional.

Holiday assortments, corporate gift baskets, flourless chocolate tortes, specialty cookies; when it comes to chocolates and confections, there’s always something sinfully delicious to be found at Puddin’ River. And because Teresa is such an artist, there is always something new and exciting that she has created.

Locally-owned and -operated by passionate people who have a genuine affection for the community they live in and serve, Puddin’ River Chocolates & Confections has the perfect gift for everyone. And for Valentine’s Day this year, Teresa is keeping the store open on both Sunday, Feb. 12 and Monday, Feb. 13, for those last-minute special gifts. Sunday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Care to Dance

Canby Rotary to host Daddy-Daughter Dance, March 11 at Ackerman Center

Returning again for 2023, the Daddy-Daughter Dance is an evening of music and magic for the young and young at heart. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, March 11, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Ackerman Center in Canby.

DDD project leader Ron Yarbrough says this special event is sponsored by Canby Rotary for the families of the community. Last year’s event was sold out, with more than 300 daddies and daughters in attendance.

“The Daddy-Daughter Dance is…really critical for relationships that are core in our community,” says Ray Keen, Canby Rotary’s immediate past president. “I think one thing that is really needed are opportunities for fathers and daughters — and other meaningful relations — to come together and connect.” Many adults and kids are finding themselves drowning in screen time, Keen says, whether that is a product of remote work, school, or simply an increased desire for escapism.

“Either we use that to disconnect or we use it to reset,” he says. “Or we feel like, ‘Hey, I need to stay informed about the next thing that’s happening.’ With all of that taking place, I think our relationships can really be impacted by that. So it’s important that we find time to do things together that are relational beyond just sort of being in the same room together, but actually having a meaningful experience together. ”

The simple act of stepping outside one’s comfort zone can be meaningful and significant to an impressionable child or loved one. “Many dads out there, like myself, are terrible dancers,” he says with a chuckle. “But I think that’s one of the best things that we can do with a young daughter is step into a space where I’m

not an expert. I don’t have all this figured out. But I do know that I want to make a night that is special for her. Creating meaningful experiences and memories like that is something that I think we’ve all learned the past couple years is so important.”

While Keen and the other organizers see the event as meaningful and important, they also think and expect that it will be a ton of fun. The evening’s agenda includes a DJ who will provide a mix of exciting music; activities such as face-painting, a balloon artist, and a photographer; and snacks and refreshments such as a chocolate fountain with marshmallows, strawberries, and cookies. Canby Rotary members are excited about providing this fun, magical evening for daddies and their daughters, as this special time brings tears to the eyes of many of the adults.

“Our desire is to see dads and daughters come together for what we think will be a really magical evening,” Keen says. “There will be special treats and magical surprises, so it should be a fantastic time.”

The Canby Rotary Daddy-Daughter Dance will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., March 11 at the Ackerman Center, 350 SE 13th Avenue in Canby. Tickets are $45 per couple (200 available) and $10 for an additional daughter. All are welcome. Tickets are available at canbyrotary.com.

TIME TO TUNE UP YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN

There are fundamental steps you can take to get on-track with your financial plan. Planning for your financial future is a critical endeavor, yet one that many overlook or fail to nurture. As we usher in the New Year, it’s the perfect time to begin focusing on your financial future, which begins by developing (or refining) your financial plan. Below are key steps you can take:

Start young Invest and save early and often, as a small recurring investment over a long period of time has the potential to produce greater returns than investing a larger amount over a shorter period. Additionally, getting an early start allows you time to recover from errors or market downturns.

Plan for an emergency Expect unexpected expenses, such as those for a medical emergency, major car repair, and an appliance replacement, and establish an emergency fund that can pay for these costs. You’ll want to keep three to six months of living expenses in the fund in case you lose your job. Without such a backup source of funding, you may have to incur credit card debt.

Invest for Retirement Saving for your retirement is a personal decision that will help shape your lifestyle during your Golden Years. It’s never too early (or late) to begin investing in your future. Consider an individual retirement account (IRA) or a 401(k), which offer tax deductions and tax-deferred growth opportunities. A common guideline is to put at least 5% of your income into a retirement account.

Diversify Risk Whatever your investment plan, consider diversifying your portfolio and including multiple asset types. This can help balance risk, in the event of market swings. Additionally, look for investments that carry low administrative fees, which has the potential to save you thousands of dollars over 20 or 30 years.

Review Your Plan Establishing a financial plan is not a one-and-done proposition. Review your plan regularly (at least annually), revising it as necessary to align with your financial circumstances and goals.

Seek Help Planning for your financial future includes myriad considerations; a financial professional can be helpful in getting your plan on the right course. Their training allows them to take a comprehensive assessment of your financial needs and goals and design a strategy that optimizes your tax consequences. Additionally, they can help you avoid mistakes that arise from inexperience or emotional decisions.

The Tonight Show DOC SEVERINSEN

Remember Carl Hilding Severinsen? No? Actually, many of you will, although you know him as “Doc” Severinsen, the legendary American trumpet player who spent 30 years leading the NBC Orchestra on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, from 1962 to 1992.

Why “Doc,” you might wonder? There’s an Oregon connection there. Severinsen was born in Arlington over in Gilliam County in 1927. The town was roughly the size then as it is now, and his father was the only dentist in town, so Carl became known as “Doc.”

So, the millions who heard Severinsen play the trumpet on The Tonight Show have Oregon to thank. Arlington is where he first picked up an instrument; the town actually had a music store at the time, and as a youth he started with the cornet but eventually settled on the trumpet. He played in the high school band and at local dances, and he even toured with Ted Fio Rito before he graduated.

Severinsen is now 95 years old, and in August he played what was billed as his final concert at the Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs. And that wasn’t a “comeback” concert, either. Severinsen has been working hard since Carson retired in May 1992, so consider that: He’s been playing the trumpet on the road, in concert, for as long as he was on The Tonight Show since he left back when George H.W. Bush was President.

Severinsen went to work for NBC in 1949 in his early 20s and

played with the likes of Steve Allen, Eddie Fisher, and Dinah Shore. He actually played for The Tonight Show even before he began his three decades with Carson, closing out each night’s show hosted by Allen with a solo. When Allen left in 1957, he did as well, but was persuaded to return as first-chair trumpeter in 1962. Five years later, he was the bandleader.

By the end of Severinsen’s run with Carson, he was arguably the most famous band leader in the country. Millions tuned in weeknights, and moments after Carson emerged from behind the curtain, they saw Severinsen, each night wearing a different and hilariously gaudy outfit that Carson loved to poke fun at.

Severinsen said in a documentary about his life, Never Too Late: The Doc Severinsen Story, that his fashion move began with ties he’d purchased at an Italian clothing store in New York. When he and Carson developed their shtick, Severinsen made it a thing.

“I don’t look at Doc’s clothes before I come out,” Carson said one night when Severinsen was wearing a jacket with pink, purple, orange, and red horizontal stripes. “And I don’t look at them after I come out.”

How does a guy in his 90s still play the trumpet, which requires tremendous core strength and lung power? Simple. Severinsen eats right and hits the gym regularly. Consider his age and his documentary: It’s never too late!

K & L INDUSTRIES

POR TL A ND’S PRE MIE R PAV ING COMPA N Y SINCE 1984

For those of you who regularly read our magazine, you may recall an article we ran back in 2020 about K & L Industries and their captivating owner/founder Keith Callaway. Nearly 3 years later here we are again, and if we presented Keith as a man who embodied all of the finest characteristics of a business owner–someone with honesty, integrity, and empathy–then the intervening years have only made him more so. Returning to our pages with his business restructured, reorganized, and revitalized, Keith has positioned K & L Industries to be the Portland Metro Area’s premier paving company through 2084 and beyond!

Since the last time we spoke, Keith and his son/partner, Keith Jr., have hired a consultant to come in and evaluate their operations. The problem was that they had been growing exponentially—certainly not a bad problem to have—but they had reached a point where they were struggling to keep up. Since Keith has always been such a conscientious man who holds himself and his business accountable to such a high standard, he refused to allow their customer service to suffer simply because they were finally getting the business they’d worked so hard to achieve. Intuitively, he also understood that the influx of new business would soon fade away if they couldn’t continue to earn it.

So, Keith answered the call by hiring a professional to come in and reorganize their entire operating system, and he couldn’t be happier! They now have a very clear organizational structure with set goals, a list of core values, and a five star review process which includes customers to keep themselves on track. In the past when important decisions needed to be made, particularly when it came to spending large amounts of money on new equipment, they often floundered, caught up in a vicious circular pattern of second guessing themselves. Now, it’s simply a matter of considering how the decision fits into their core values. If it’s in line, then the decision is made, period. There’s no longer that lingering doubt or that emotional component. It’s cut and dry, and it has streamlined their operations in ways he never thought possible!

Keith has always prided himself and K & L Industries on the fact that once they have been hired to do a job, they do it right every time, and the first time! Their reputation has

been built on that guarantee, and they’ve never had to work exceptionally hard at selling the business because it sells itself. Check out any job they’ve done around town and you will be an instant believer. They are just shy of 40 years now leading the industry, and there is almost nothing that they can’t accomplish.

They do all aspects of commercial and residential paving: new paving, maintenance, repair, sealcoating, and milling (asphalt grinding). They do it with the best equipment run by a terrific team focused on providing customers with the best value for their money. All this and they’re still a locallyowned family business. Keith’s wife (known affectionately as the “company mom”) and his eldest son also work there but the whole team is considered family. And this is not Keith “posturing” for this article. He means it! Check out for yourself on their Facebook page and listen to the testimonials. They’re amazing!

Working with contractors can be challenging, but Keith Callaway and K & L Industries are the real deal. With a sterling reputation and a “new” corporate structure which has improved an organization that was already at the top of their game, there is no one who does it better. In 2022, for the second year in a row, they won a coveted spot on forconstructionpros.com’s list of best construction contractors to work for in the country! They are in the running for “Contractor of the Year” through Equipment World Magazine (against the other Top 11 in the country for Heavy Construction), as well as Top 75 in the country for Residential and Commercial Paving, and Top 75 for Pavement Maintenance. They are also a “2nd Chance” employer and someone who appreciates and supports their local community!

Contact K & L Industries at 503-266-1130 or check them out online at kandlindustries.com. Experience for yourself how they are “transforming lives one shovel at a time.”

The Origins of the Tater Tot

A Tasty Oregon Invention

The Tater Tot. It’s hard to resist these crunchy golden-brown potato morsels piled high in a basket, or nestled on a plate accompanying our favorite burger or sandwich. For many of us, “Tater Tot” and “comfort food” go hand-in-hand. It’s ingrained in our culture—at least from a food perspective!

But did you know that these world famous potato nuggets were invented in Oregon, and that they were the creative byproduct of potato scraps originally used as cattle feed? The story of the Tater Tot traces back to two young Mormon entrepreneurs named Nephi and Golden Griggs who came of age during the Great Depression. Originally from Idaho, the Griggs brothers were potato farmers like most of their neighbors. Throughout the Great Depression and World War II, the Griggs survived by growing and selling potatoes, but during the postwar years as Americans increasingly turned to convenience foods—frozen foods in particular—the Nephi brothers were certain that their road to riches lay in servicing this growing demand.

Convinced that the future of produce resided in the frozen food section, the two brothers mortgaged their farms to purchase a flash-freezing plant in Northeastern Oregon for $500,000 (approximately $4.5 million today). As the factory was located on the border between Oregon and Idaho, they chose to name their new company Ore-Ida.

Corn and potatoes were Ore-Ida’s mainstay and the company soon became the largest distributor of sweet corn in the country, but the real profit lay in french fries. French fries, though immensely profitable, posed certain production problems. Nephi (the leader of the two brothers) described their challenge as follows: “We had a problem separating the fries from the slivers and small pieces of

potatoes that occurred when slicing the irregular shaped potatoes.” Instead of wasting the scrap pieces, the brothers had been feeding it to their cattle and other livestock.

Despite the fact that their potato scraps were being utilized as feed for farm animals, Nephi Griggs—always focused on efficiency and profit maximization—was bothered by their inability to derive any revenue from the constant flow of potato byproducts. In a letter to an OreIda colleague, Nephi vented his frustration at not putting to better use “product that has been purchased from the grower, stored for months, gone through the peeling process, gone through the specking lines and trimmed off defects, only to be eliminated into the cattle feed.”

An unexpected visit by a representative from an equipment manufacturing company, however, proved to be serendipitous. Although the company representative was there to demonstrate a prune sorter, Nephi and his plant superintendent envisioned utilizing the equipment in a different manner. Instead of sorting prunes, could the machinery be refashioned to sort irregular potato pieces from french fries? To their delight, it could.

It wasn’t long before the Griggs and their people at Ore-Ida devised a creative use for the supply of potato scraps. By smashing the bits together using new machinery, then blanching, forming the crushed potatoes into nuggets, and cooking them in oil, a completely new product was

created. These potato nuggets could subsequently be frozen, bagged, and distributed. Although the original idea was for the nuggets to be fried, it was soon discovered that baking them produced equally good results. According to Nephi, a man on their research committee who “traveled the markets playing a ukulele and demonstrating our product,” came up with the name. Unfortunately, the man’s name has been lost to history, though his talent for creative alliteration lives on. The name “Tater Tot” is iconic across the world for fun, palate-pleasing, potato goodness.

Nephi remarked in his notes (which are now housed at the J. Willard Marriott

“new product has about a three year

the “Tater Tot” name, purchased additional machinery, and began mass producing their tasty invention.

Despite the success of the Tater Tot, the process to create them was a bit of a sticky mess—literally. New equipment had to be fashioned to deal with the starchy potato product. Steel drums the diameter of a human torso rotated continuously filling tot-sized molds with potato. These molded potatoes would then be ejected onto a conveyor belt and sent down a line for seasoning and subsequent freezing.

Ore-Ida’s commitment to the Tater Tot, in spite of production difficulties, proved a gamble worth taking. The Griggs brothers’ promotion of their new product at the 1954 National Potato Convention was a huge hit, garnering interest in Tater Tots throughout the industry. The media was also quick to embrace Tater Tots as a convenient

new food for snacks and meals that was tasty and easy to prepare. So successful was the Tater Tot that Nephi referred to it as their “hero profit item,” and cited it as responsible for making Ore-Ida a household name. By the end of the 1950s, Ore-Ida had captured 25 percent of the domestic frozen potato market. A second plant was opened in 1960, and by 1961 Ore-Ida had gone public.

In 1964, despite generating an annual profit of $31 million, problems within the family necessitated the sale of Ore-Ida. The Griggs sold the company to H.J. Heinz in 1965 for $30 million. The Heinz purchase of Ore-Ida was the company’s first foray into the frozen food market. By the time Heinz merged with Kraft in 2015, the Tater Tot was so common of a product that few people realized the name was still trademarked to Ore-Ida. An advertising campaign was even created to differentiate OreIda tots from the competition. The campaign warned, “Don’t be fooled by Imi-taters,” because Ore-Ida Tater Tots were the “original and only.”

Today, as one of America’s cherished food items, Tater Tots have been incorporated in multitudes of home recipes and even elevated to culinary feature items at certain restaurants. There is no end of possibilities when it comes to something as versatile as the Tater Tot! So, next time you find yourself reaching for a crispy golden Tater Tot, think of the Griggs brothers and the Oregonian ingenuity that transformed cattle feed into a delectable treat enjoyed by millions.

A SHINING EXAMPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY

Mattress stores seem to be a dime a dozen, with locations on virtually every street corner and dozens of online options as well. And you’d think the buying experience would be the same as the next, right? Wrong. For starters, there’s the personability. Sean has been in the business for over 25 years. He started the parent company Furniture Showcase, Inc. in 1995, and has been serving the community as Mattress World Northwest (MWNW) since 2004. He and his team are dedicated to making your mattress buying experience one of a kind. In talking to Sean, it’s obvious he cares deeply about his employees and his customers.

Sean spoke passionately about MWNW’s three-pronged approach to business success. Firstly, they are dedicated to helping their customers get a better night’s sleep. Thorough training and the largest selection in the NW allow them to assist every person to find the most comfortable mattress for a better night’s sleep.

Secondly, MWNW’s business mission is making sure their employees are happy. This is one of those places you hear about but rarely find – a place young folks start working at and never leave! They legitimately treat their employees like family and empower them to live their best lives.

Most impressive and thirdly, MWNW prioritizes giving to the communities they reside in. Sean and the MWNW team incorporate charitable giving and philanthropy into the corporate culture. Walk into any one of their stores throughout the year, and you’ll see they are promoting some sort of fundraising event, whether it’s in support of Polar Plunge For Special Olympics Oregon, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, the Senior Citizens Council of Clackamas County, or one of our local schools.

In the month of March, all MWNW stores will be asking for donations to support Polar Plunge

for Special Olympics Oregon. Their main fundraiser, The Polar Plunge, takes place March 11 at Willamette Park in Portland.

According to Special Olympics Oregon, “Polar Plunge is your chance to step out of your comfort zone by jumping into an unforgettable experience that directly impacts the lives of Special Olympics Oregon Athletes. By participating you provide 5,000+ Special Olympics Oregon Athletes access to sports, activities, and community.”

Here is why Special Olympics Oregon is so important: “Special Olympics Oregon believes in the transformative power and pure joy of athletic competition. Every day across the state, we help children and adults with intellectual disabilities become athletes and grow a strong, supportive community of advocates. Through year-round training and serious competition, Special Olympics participants journey along a proven pathway to better health, essential life skills and lifelong friendships.” Please help us raise funds by donating online or visiting one of our local stores. Family-owned and -operated, dedicated to providing their customers the best products at the best prices, all while donating to and participating in their local communities, Mattress World Northwest exemplifies the best of what retail businesses have to offer. Canby Fire District Adopts 2023 Strategic Plan

Canby Fire District works diligently each year to complete the goals outlined in the district’s strategic plan. Once all goals are achieved, a new plan is established. At the December 2022 Board of Directors meeting, Board members unanimously voted to adopt the 2023 Strategic Plan, which outlines the following goals for personnel:

GOAL 1 Medical / Life-Safety and Community Health.

Continually improve the effectiveness of medical emergency response results and risk-reduction for preventable medical events.

GOAL 2 Fire /Attack Hazard Response.

Consistently meet, or exceed, targets for life and property protection related to structure fires, wildland fires, rescue, and all-hazard emergency response.

GOAL 3 Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response

Strengthen intergovernmental and community coordination/preparation for effective response to natural and man-made disasters.

GOAL 4 Community Partnerships and Risk Reduction

Expand and strengthen District-community partnerships to further reduce risk and ensure a safer community.

GOAL 5 Recruitment, Retention and Personnel Satisfaction

Maintain and improve a mutually supportive, missionoriented work environment and widen the diversity of career, volunteer, and student-intern staff working at Canby Fire District.

Maintain efficient, and transparent, use of District resources to strengthen our mission and further promote public trust in how District fire and medical response services operate.

Canby Fire is funded by a permanent property tax rate of $1.54 per $1,000 assessed valuation (though taxes collected in Urban Renewal Areas do not contribute to the permanent rate until Urban Renewal Bonds are paid off — at Canby Fire, this is a difference of six firefighter/medics). The Fire District also receives $0.45 per $1,000 assessed valuation from a voter-approved special levy. The levy is voted on every five years and supports firefighter staffing. The Fire District will make recommendations to the Fire Board during the 2023/2024 budget presentations regarding solutions to increased call volume and increased costs for operations.

A sincere thank you to our community for your continued support. Canby Fire District is committed to creating safer communities through prevention, preparedness, and effective fire and medical emergency response.

Beware of DIY Real Property Deeds

We have previously discussed some of the pitfalls of “doit-yourself” (DIY) legal work. We are going to look at some of the issues that can come up when executing real property deeds; these documents have long term (and often permanent) consequences. At our office, we have done a fair bit of work to “roll back” or “fix” property improperly deeded with results that the clients had not intended. Oregon recognizes several specific types of deeds and each does different things; so, as in all things, it is important to know the right tool for the job. The following is a non-exhaustive discussion of some real property issues that we’ve seen because of mistakes with deeds.

Survivorship Rights: Oregon recognizes different forms of ownership in real property. Depending on the type of ownership and owners’ circumstances, state law applies different presumptions regarding how the property is held, and what happens to an ownership interest when the owner dies. These “survivorship rights” are where we have seen many client pitfalls. There is very specific phrasing that deeds must recite if the deed is to have its intended purpose. We have seen clients who assumed their deed created one type of ownership in the property when it actually created something very different. We have seen cases in which a person inadvertently divided their property into small fractional interests by executing the wrong type of deed. This problem is compounded if a person necessary to unwind or correct the problem passes away, at which point the property can get stuck in the wrong type of ownership, and the only option is to move forward with the erroneous ownership.

Irrevocable Transfers: Often, property conveyances cannot be undone. In addition to the example involving a deceased

grantor, discussed above, another example we frequently see involves someone gifting their real property to a friend or family member. Later, the grantor realizes that the gift was a mistake but the recipient refuses to return the gift. Litigation may be the only remedy and the results are hardly guaranteed.

Unforeseen Tax Consequences: Gifting and changing property ownership can have far-reaching tax consequences. Examples of types of tax liability that a conveyance of real property can create include estate tax, gift tax, and capital gains tax. It’s not uncommon for someone to make a property conveyance to avoid one type of tax and, without realizing, create an event with even greater tax implications than would have been due in the first place.

Due on Sale/Acceleration: Transferring property for estate planning purposes, gifting purposes, to avoid taxes, or because of the beginning or end of a personal relationship may seem logical and straightforward. BUT, these are common ways to accidentally breach your Trust Deed and cause the acceleration of your home mortgage (making its entire balance due and payable).

Executing deeds without full knowledge of the property rights, type of ownership, and the tax implications can create a minefield of issues, costs, and potential litigation. This column has mentioned it before but – taking the DIY route may save you a little in the short term but could create a much more expensive issue for you, your estate, or your family. It can be “penny-wise and pound foolish.” If you’re considering making a real property conveyance, we would be happy to speak with you to ensure the result is what you intend.

Frank Conversation

Frank Cutsforth leads Canby market with family at center of success

getting a taste of what the grocery business was all about. As he reached high school, Frank performed other jobs such as carrying out groceries and filling stock. After high school and a few years of college, Frank decided to move into the store full time. He became manager of the produce department in 1963. Frank continued working his way through the various departments—deli, grocery, etc. — eventually learning the “the whole sales floor,” with the exception of the meat department. Glenn and Elsie “put a lot of conditions on me as we all worked together in running our store,” Frank shares. He went on to join his parents in the store’s ownership, becoming a third partner with them. “Mom passed [in] 2003, and Dad passed [in] 2005,” Frank reflects. “I had a lifetime with them in the store. It was fun. We learned so much.”

Cutsforth’s Market, a historic mainstay of the Canby community since 1928, is proud of being a fourthgeneration family-owned and -operated local business. Store owner Frank Cutsforth continues his grandfather’s legacy as an independent neighborhood grocer. Providing for the community for 95 years, Cutsforth’s Market is truly a “homegrown” family venture.

As a youth in the early 1950s, Frank completed small projects around the store for his parents, Glenn and Elsie Cutsforth,

Frank and his wife, Kathe, have five children. Their daughter, Kelsey, is Cutsforth’s CFO and responsible for accounting and bookkeeping, as well as running the store’s gift shop. The oldest son, Brooks, handles the property management side of the business and holds some ownership stock in the store as well. Joel, the third son, heads up the wine department and manages the wine sales. Tanner, Frank and Kathe’s youngest son, is savvy in computer tech and does the store promotions, and is “very good at his job,” his dad contends. Their second son, Christian, worked at Cutsforth’s Market until approximately five years ago before starting his own business in Portland selling wholesale pots he sources from around the world.

“We really are a family store, for sure, if there ever was one,” Frank relates. And this family’s commitment to the community is demonstrated through their involvement with the local schools, churches, sports programs, Rotary Club, and Chamber of Commerce. A fun fact about Frank Cutsforth and his family is that in 1995, Cutsforth’s Market sponsored a small car show on the store’s side lot. It was such a hit that it has grown to be one of the biggest car shows in the state of Oregon. Last summer, Cutsforth’s CruiseIn was held at Canby’s Wait Park with more than 700 classic cars participating. Acknowledging the Canby community’s ongoing support of Cutsforth’s Market, Frank expresses, “I appreciate our town. We couldn’t do without them.”

HAVE YOU WONDERED WHY VINTAGE CLOTHES SEEM SO SMALL?

We love vintage fashion here at Retro. One of the comments we get the most is, “Women were so small back then.” NOT TRUE! People have ALWAYS come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. DO NOT judge yourself by the clothes you see on the rack. You’re amazing just as you are.

Vintage clothing does trend smaller because the vintage fashion that you see out in the wild has been self curated with a survival bias. People really wore their favorite clothing and the things that fit, were loved, and wore out. That is a big reason why men’s clothing is scarcer than womens. Clothes that didn’t wear out were passed down and altered to fit a smaller person or were turned into quilts, etc. This applies to the most common sizes that people were wearing.

The clothing that survived were pieces that were worn very little, like party/ prom dresses. These were worn as a teenager and into your 20s! Of course they’re smaller. They were saved because they were a memory and put in the back of a closet. Once you get into the 60s & 70s or so, larger sizes have survived.

We work hard to find vintage clothing that is accessible to everyone and is in wearable condition. Those that aren’t up to snuff for us, we put in a “dress up box” at a price that is affordable for the littles. Come on in and see what’s new.

Hayes

Born and raised in the Portland-metro area, Jeff Hayes, Top Notch Home Inspection’s owner, has deep roots in the construction and real estate industries, and in the community as a whole. With 28 years in the construction and real estate industries, Jeff is uniquely qualified to help buyers, investors and real estate agents to get the most out of a home inspection.

In 1994, Jeff helped launch K&D Hayes Construction. As part owner and manager, he developed plans for and built approximately 75 homes. The construction experience gained in this role provided him unique expertise as a home inspector as his knowledge of real estate and construction goes (literally) from the ground up!

In 2007, Jeff began to transition out of his role with K&D and into the commercial industry. He began as a project manager and estimator with Payne Construction. This role allowed him to grow his skill set with increased connections in public works departments, and experience dealing with very large

scopes of work and even overseeing a $5M project. With changes in the real estate market, Jeff decided to make a big change too. In 2010, he became an Oregon Certified Home Inspector, and began Top Notch Home Inspection LLC. Over the past 12 years, he has carefully added to the team, and has become one of the most respected home inspection companies in the Portland-metro area, and also stretching south of Salem and to the Oregon coast—and just in the three years, growing to inspect in Washington State as well. With a current staff of six, Top Notch Home Inspection LLC averages as many as 25 home inspections per week.

testing, radon testing and so much more, Jeff has built a company ready to serve and inform their clients.

Jeff is even able to offer training classes on a variety of inspection and homerelated topics for continuing education credits for realtors!

A team with a wealth of construction-field experience, attention to detail, professionalism and pride in their work—combined with straight-forward, quick turnaround inspection reports (24-hour guarantee on home inspections) and off-thecharts customer service is what makes Top Notch Home Inspection. From septic and sewer services, mold, asbestos, lead and water

Jeff is proud to be an industry-leader, and to offer the highest quality, most comprehensive home inspections available on the market today.

Jeff is married with three daughters and two crazy golden retrievers. When he isn’t busy providing realtor training, or booking and performing inspections, Jeff enjoys traveling, watching and tracking sports of all kinds, and all things water-related —from rafting to snorkeling to anything poolside—by the water is where he likes to be!

Makeup Prime Time

Primers range from face primers to eyeshadow primers, to even mascara primers. There are also specialty face primers with color correction, tints, or SPF. Some primers even add radiance and glow or help control oil. So it seems that there’s a primer for everything, and there’s a good reason for it, primers make the application of products after that much better and last longer!

Face primers are applied before foundation. Do I use one every single day? No. Do I use one every single time I want to look my best, have my makeup last, or am about to take photos? Absolutely.

Some of my favorite primers are made from medical-grade silicone, which creates a super smooth Photoshop effect on which the foundation is applied. So your skin is not suffocated by cheap ingredients, make sure your primer is non-comedogenic — AKA won’t clog your pores. You don’t need to use too much — about the size of a pea — and concentrate it more on the inner part of the face. As a professional makeup artist for brides, I absolutely use a face primer every single time I do wedding makeup, and I usually reach for the regular face primer from Glo Skin Beauty.

Eyeshadow primer has the same goal: to make a smooth even surface that helps the product that’s applied to last longer. Eyeshadow primers usually have a gentle tint to help even out the tone of the thinner skin on the eyelid.

Eyeshadow colors may appear differently if you’re applying them to eyelids that have visible veins or discoloration — this is most of us — so not only will it give your eyeshadow something to cling to, but it will also create an even canvas for applying the eyeshadow pigment. Eyeshadow primers also help with keeping eyeshadow in place and preventing it from falling below your eyes.

Mascara primers help maximize lash strength and health while adding volume, length, or both, to the lash before applying mascara. Our favorite also adds a little curl as well. Swipe one application before brushing on your favorite mascara.

Just Keep Swimming

Canby High Swim Team makes a splash

The psychological and sociological benefits gained by participating in team sports cannot be understated. Studies have proven time and again how it improves self-esteem, communication skills, time management, stress management; and the list goes on. As the only non-cut sport offered in the Canby High Athletic Program, swimming provides an all-inclusive and unique opportunity for students at every skill level to experience those benefits. Whether you perform at a competitive level and have aspirations of leading the team to victory at the district and state championships, or you’ve never entered a pool before, everyone is welcomed as an integral part of the program.

Head Coach Eric Laitinen, who has been leading this team for 20 years now, said he has always approached his role from a position of support. Contrasting the hardnosed authoritative types we often see characterized in the movies, Coach Laitinen endeavors to maintain a

low-key stance and promote a positive atmosphere, which encourages the kids to simply do their best. He, of course, wants them to work hard, to be diligent, and to race well, but as long as they are exhibiting good sportsmanship and having fun, then he’s doing his job. And what a job he has done!

Last year, the girl’s team won the district championships and placed 10th in state (out of roughly 50 teams)! This year, they are already 5 and 0 with only a couple of meets left. The boy’s team placed third in district last year, and took a top-20 slot in state. This year, they are 4 and 1 and only barely lost the 1. So, clearly, Coach Laitinen has his finger on the pulse of this team.

While they have a fairly good balance of kids across all four grades, this is a relatively “young” team with only about a third of the swimmers returning from last year. The boy’s team, in particular, is in a rebuilding phase right now after most of their more competitive Seniors graduated. Still, both teams are doing exceptionally well so far this season, and Coach Laitinen hopes to win district for both. And, if all goes well, he’s hoping the girls will place in the top three for state.

Even as they rebuild, Coach said the boy’s team does have some key players he hopes to take to state this year. Jamison Chard, the only Senior on the boy’s team and a veteran of the state championship (competing the last

three years at that level), is expected to compete again as a Sprint Freestyler. Two other boys who went to state last year are expected to return this year: Junior Isaac Beck (who should be swimming in the 500-meter freestyle in addition to relays) and Junior Kai Laitinen (500-meter freestyle, and the 200-meter individual medley in addition to relays).

On the girl’s side, everyone who went to state last year is expected to return this year. Senior Allison Yancey should be competing in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley (where she placed top eight last year). Senior Avery Keinonen should be swimming in the 100-meter fly and the 200-meter individual medley

(where she placed in both last year). And Senior Kennedy Hester is expected to compete in relays. There are two Juniors returning from last year: Kali Mull (who was fourth in the 200-meter last time and placed in the 100-meter freestyle), and Amanda Yancey (who will swim in relays). Finally, returning from last year is Sophomore Kendra Sawatsky who will be a relay alternate.

The team is loaded with great kids, though, Coach Laitinen said, and regardless of where they stand at the end of the season, it’s been a terrific year. He’s grateful, too, for the Canby Swim Club in town. Head Coach Nathan Templeman and his entire staff there really help out with the High School

program,” he said, “and I couldn’t do what I do without them.”

Swimming is a fantastic sport. According to swimming.org, the leading benefits of swimming include: a full-body workout; great for general well-being; helps you to destress, relax, and sleep better; one of the most effective ways to burn calories; lowers the risk of certain diseases; supports the body during injury; increases your energy levels; never makes you sweat! As a noncut sport, it’s also a wonderful way to dip your toe into the waters of competitive sports—pun intended. Check out the team for yourself or show up in support of Coach Laitinen and Canby High Athletics.

THE HISTORY OF

Red Velvet Cake

Cake itself dates back to the 13th century. And for hundreds of years, cakes were basically sweet bread or what we know today as fruitcake, with dried fruits and nuts, and pretty coarse as far as dessert goes. It took about 500 years for bakers to make better cakes, breaking down the flour for a more delicate and delicious cake. But where does the traditional red velvet cake come from?

Historians believe velvet cake was invented during the Victorian Era. In the 1800s, recipes using cocoa for gourmet cakes gained popularity, and the bakers called them “velvet” cakes and served them at fancy parties. To contrast how coarse cakes used to be, they specifically called them “velvet” so the guests would know how delicate and soft the cakes were. And it seemed that bakers were obsessed with trying to perfect the cake recipe. The ingredient cocoa–first imported from the Americas in the 17th century–broke down the coarseness of the flour, resulting in a soft and velvety cake. But where does the red come from? It’s said that the red color is due to a chemical reaction of acid and cocoa, as natural cocoa is high in acidity and functions well with buttermilk and baking soda, common ingredients in cake at the time. In addition to its delectable chocolate flavor, the cocoa is what makes the cake so “velvet.”

Later in the 1900s, cake recipes began using cocoa as the main ingredient. And bakers, home and professional, found recipes for cocoa velvet cakes, red cocoa cakes, and other types. Around 1943, a then successful cookbook, The Joy of Cooking, included a red velvet cake. Irma S. Rombauer, writer of the book, stated she never cared for the cake but felt compelled to include it. And this 1943 recipe was the first official mention of the red velvet cake in U.S. media.

At the outbreak of WWII, food and supplies were rationed to soldiers and civilians, including such baking ingredients as sugar and butter. This resulted in bakers, in lieu of using sugar, choosing beets and beet juice as a sweetener. Funny enough, modern red velvet cake recipes still call for beets! The bright and rich red color of beets made for a more appealing cake, at least aesthetically. Interestingly enough, the beets also made the cake soft and moist, preventing the cake from drying out so easily while being cooked. And during the trying times of war, civilians were actually quite happy to buy red velvet cake because it was different and somehow more special. The beets didn’t adversely affect the flavor, but rather created a soft and moist texture and the dramatic red color the cake is known for, impressing guests with a bright and rich red centerpiece on the dessert table. Still popular today, red velvet remains a wildcard in the baking world, and not just as cake anymore–there’s cupcakes, pie, cookies, and red velvet chicken and waffles! So, ultimately, who is credited as creating red velvet cake?

According to The Adams Extract company, they claim to be responsible for inventing the cake in the United States, as they made a fortune selling red food coloring (instead of beets and beet juice) to make the cake possible. The Waldorf Astoria Hotel also claims they are the inventors and birthplace of red velvet cake. However, in this writer’s opinion, like language itself, it took many years and mouths and minds to evolve what we know today as red velvet cake, and no one person could possibly be credited. Next time you’re enjoying a rich slice of red velvet cake, remember all these bakers who perfected this recipe over hundreds of years!

The Gift of Food

The Rotary Club of Canby is one of several community partners of the Canby School District and The Canby Center that funds, assembles, and distributes Backpack Buddies food bags every week of the school year to support children in our community.

Canby Kiwanis Club has led a community effort at Christmas for many years to provide a holiday food box or gift card and toys for families. Rotarians truly appreciate the partnership with Kiwanians because together, we can accomplish more than any one group of people can accomplish alone. Canby Kiwanis and other partners collected toys and gift cards for children. One evening in December, members of both clubs selected and packed gifts for each child. There were more than 1,000 children and about 460 families who received the toys and gift cards. Rotarians contributed $2,500 to support the project.

Hunger touches every part of our community, including children, teens, adults, and seniors. Local food banks are often stretched to their limit finding ways to respond

It is hard to imagine a child struggling with lack of access to enough food at home. There are many reasons why this happens, but what is important is that caring adults recognize the need and fill it. Canby Rotarians donated $2,000 and about 40 hours of volunteer labor to pack 285 bags each week with kid-friendly food in the month of January. These food bags were delivered to Carus, Eccles, Knight, Lee, and Trost elementary schools along with 91 School and Baker Prairie Middle School.

to the basic needs of food. Canby Rotary raised funds in December to contribute $2,000 used to purchase food vouchers for Cutsforth’s Market. These “Rotary Bucks” are distributed by staff at The Canby Center to people referred by Canby Police officers and those who come to The Center in need of support. Rotary Bucks are simply a gift from the heart to people who need a bit of help with the hope that love and a helping hand will make a difference.

Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary Clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.

Canby High School has a career readiness class called Future Focus. The objective of the class is to teach students foundational and soft skills to prepare them for life after high school. A part of the class each semester is the mock interviews. A mock interview is set-up as an experience to provide the student a real job interview or as real as is possible. The mock interview helps

the student learn what is expected in a job interview and improve the student’s self-presentation. Rotarians have volunteered to be the person interviewing the students for about ten years. The fall session was held in November, and ten Rotarians took time from their workday to participate. As one student wrote in his letter after the class, “I was nervous about the interview and answering questions. You helped me relax and present my best self. I feel

more prepared for the time when I interview for a job. Thank you.”

There is a new Peace Pole at the Canby Fire District facility in Canby. About 35 Rotarians and Fire Department staff dedicated the Peace Pole along with Rotary District Governor Steve Williams. CUSTOM ORDERS

Changing the Buying Experience

Global supply chain shortages have changed the way Dick’s Canby Ford does business. With specific auto parts becoming more difficult to acquire, Chip shortages, and labor shortages, manufacturers are reorganizing production to prioritize customer retail orders. Instead of filling lots with cars, SUVs and trucks to meet demand, manufacturers are seeing better results filling custom orders for most customers.

For buyers, custom-order incentives, and the ability to purchase exactly what they desire, no more and no less, combined with the ease and flexibility of ordering from home, suggest an appealing future for auto sales. Dick’s Canby Ford has seen great success with prioritizing customer orders over having stagnate new car inventory.

So, what exactly are the rewards of custom-order Fords?

Can I get exactly what I want?

One of the most obvious benefits is gettng exactly what you want. With extensive options for trim, exterior, features, colors and more, there are thousands of customizations to be explored. It may seem intimidating at first, but Dick’s Canby Ford can help you check all the right boxes for your own personal tastes and needs. Why search for a vehicle that matches most of your preferences, when you can order one made especially for you.

Why pay for unwanted features?

Another benefit of hand-selecting your vehicle’s features is avoiding paying for add-ons you never needed or wanted in the first place. Custom orders allow you to build your new vehicle exactly the way you want it.

How long does it take to receive my car?

Although the production time might seem excessive, compared to simply driving it off the lot, custom orders may take less time than you think. In general, vehicles take eight to 12 weeks to produce and ship to the dealer.

Is the process convenient?

For those who want to order a vehicle from home, creating a custom order is fast and easy. In most cases, you can finish the preliminary order in minutes. Once you’ve submitted your order through Dick’s Canby Ford’s online system, dealership representatives can efficiently help you with the rest of the painless process.

Can I save money?

Since Dick’s Canby Ford now encourages custom orders, which then saves money on inventory manufacturing, the dealership offers incentives, such as a $1000 bonus cash offer on select custom models. Also, you’ll also be able to lock in interest rates, making a custom vehicle an intelligent financial investment.

BILL SCHONELY

FAREWELL TO AN OREGON LEGEND

Yes, Bill Schonely was larger than life. The legendary Portland Trail Blazers broadcaster illuminated any room in which he entered. The author and mayor of Rip City had hundreds of thousands of fervent admirers cast throughout the state of Oregon and southwest Washington. But Schonely, who died on January 20 at age 93, was also a humble man, private in some ways. He enjoyed nothing more than spending a quiet night at home with his high school sweetheart and bride Dottie. He met friends for an occasional lunch and/or dinner date, but he wasn’t a man about town, not in his latter years.

The Schonelys lived in the south Metro area through much of their marriage — first for nearly 20 years in Charbonneau, then for two years in Tualatin, and finally at The Springs at Lake Oswego. They loved the area. Bill and Dottie were natives of Norristown, Pa. Bill went off to the Marines, became a sergeant and was stationed in Guam, where he served from 1948-51. Schonz worked for Armed Forces Radio and got his first taste of football and baseball play-by-play. He was an excellent singer, big band style, and had strongly considered a career in music. But gradually, his interests shifted to broadcasting.

Schonely’s career began at a radio and TV station in Baton Rouge, La., in 1952. He called LSU football and basketball and even served as ring announcer for pro wrestling, once being sprayed with perfume by the valet of the great Gorgeous George’s. Schonz was eventually talked into getting into the ring and wrestling four or five times — and that wasn’t the end of his “rasslin” career.

In 1955, he landed a job in Seattle, staying there for 15 years. He worked with the likes of Keith Jackson at KOMO radio for a spell, called Seattle Totems hockey and Seattle Rainiers minor league baseball, and even got back into the ring for a couple more pro wrestling matches. He also got behind the pipes to play goaltender at a Totems practice, winding up with a shoulder injury that required a cast on his arm.

In 1969, Schonely called play-by-play for the Seattle Pilots in their lone season in the American League. When the Pilots moved to Milwaukee, he thought about joining them. Fate intervened. Harry Glickman called with an offer to do play-by-play for the expansion Trail Blazers. Schonely took the job, and the rest is history.

Writer

1977 championship team.

“From the beginning, he made people believe that what (the Blazers) were doing was worth their interest, their attention, their commitment and their loyalty. Those were all human elements that Bill Schonely had in boundless abundance.”

Schonely’s popularity in Portland — and make no mistake, he is the most important figure in franchise history — stems from a couple of things. One, coaches and players changed often throughout the course of 50-plus years of Blazer basketball. Schonz was the one constant through the years, beginning with the inaugural 1970-71 campaign and continuing through his retirement in April of 2022. He spent much time in the community, representing the Blazers at luncheons and banquets. He emceed countless charity events — mostly gratis — because he was asked to. “I had a hard time turning anybody down,” Schonely told me. His name associated with any event was a big deal in making it a success. During the summers in the early years, Schonely led a caravan throughout the state, visiting radio affiliates and spreading the Blazer gospel. Sometimes, he would take players along. “None of us ever turned down a request from Bill,” Walton says. “We would drive to Bend or Astoria or Pendleton. We would just be friends in the car. Bill would get us there. We would get to the event and Bill had organized it for us to meet with advertisers, sponsors and civic leaders. And Bill would put the show on. It was great to be a part of it.”

During his years as an ambassador for the team, he continued to perform the aforementioned duties, and also had game-night responsibilities. He would start out on the concourse, visiting with fans entering the arena. He would stop by 10 Barrel Brewing’s “Schonely Taproom” for a glass of Chardonnay and more interaction with fans. Then he would head to the suite level, where he would meet with sponsors and suite-holders, many of them starstruck to have a few moments with this iconic character.

For the next 28 years and 2,500 preseason, regular-season and postseason games, Schonely was the voice of the Blazers. His “Rip City!” catch phrase was instituted that first season, and now has become the avant-garde nickname for the city of Portland. In 2012, Schonely was honored with the “Curt Gowdy Award” for excellence in sportscasting at the Naismith Basketball Hall Fame induction ceremony in Springfield, Mass. “Bill was the most important Blazer of us all,” says fellow Hall of Famer Bill Walton, the lynchpin of the

Schonely enjoyed it all. Hundreds have photos with him on their cell phones or in photo albums. There will be other broadcasters as the Blazers continue to play in the NBA through the years. There may never be one as beloved, however, as Bill Schonely.

Amber Moore, who took ownership of this location in June 2022, couldn’t be more excited to represent this fantastic brand and to be a new member of the Wilsonville community. As a secondgeneration Black Bear franchisee, she feels like it’s coded into her DNA. Her folks owned three locations (Klamath Falls, Medford, and Grants Pass), so she quite literally grew up with Black Bear Diner, and her passion and enthusiasm for the brand, and serving the community, are infectious.

Since Amber came aboard, she has already recognized how fortunate she is to have such an amazing team at her location. Many of them have been there since the beginning — this location

Tame your growling stomach at Black Bear Diner in Wilsonville

Hankering for a good, old-fashioned, stick-to-your-ribs meal? Come down to Black Bear Diner in Wilsonville and feed your inner bear!

We’ve seen their warm, inviting, rustic log cabin exteriors adorned with cute and cuddly sculpted bears, but if you’ve never stepped inside, then you’ve been missing out. Serving a vast array of scrumptious, hardy, down-home country comfort foods in a fun and family-friendly environment, Black Bear Diner is the perfect answer to that increasingly popular question: Where can we get a home-cooked meal outside of the home?

Established in 1995 by Bruce Dean, and Bob and Laurie Manley down in California, Black Bear Diner was founded with that exact purpose in mind. And what they quickly discovered was that the community at large was just as hungry for that particular brand of culinary experience as they were. It was so popular, in fact, that they quickly expanded and eventually began to offer franchise opportunities. Today, there are 154 locations and counting across 14 states.

They are driven by a straight-forward mission: Offer guests the pre-eminent family dining experience; serve excellent food at a great value; create a fun, uniquely bear-themed atmosphere; and staff with friendly, knowledgeable employees. And nowhere is that more clearly defined than at the Wilsonville location.

opened roughly five years ago — and they are so ingrained in the community that it warms her heart. Amber loves nothing more than to see guests coming in for a meal, but then stopping on their way out for a friendly conversation with a favorite server or kitchen staff member.

Of course, as any restaurateur will acknowledge, more than anything, it’s the food that makes the brand, and Black Bear Diner delivers that in spades. Regarding both quantity and quality, they work tirelessly to “wow” every customer who walks through their doors. They use only the best ingredients and prepare almost every single item from scratch following their signature Black Bear Diner recipes. Breakfast is especially popular and served all day. Favorites include: Sweet Cream Pancakes (unique and decadent), Stuffed Blackberry French Toast (their amazing fruit-filled Bear Claws dipped in French toast

Growing to Serve

The Canby Center launches 90-day campaign to raise $800,000 for expansion

To date, The Canby Center has raised more than $7 million for the project — nearly 90% of its total campaign goal of $8 million. Steve says the Center receives generous support from a diverse network of churches, businesses, organizations, and individual donors.

The Canby Center, a faith-based, service-oriented nonprofit serving local youth and families, has launched a 90-day, $800,000 fundraising campaign that will allow the organization to complete the most significant expansion in its history and enable them to serve the growing needs in Canby — now and for decades to come.

This campaign will make it possible to renovate and more than triple the Center’s existing space on southwest Second Avenue, adding 11,000 square feet for food distribution, classrooms, a job center, offices, and more. It will also open the door to expanding its highly successful Thriving Together program, launching a new youth-mentoring program and deepening partnerships with other organizations that are also serving the Canby community.

“This campaign really is about so much more than raising a building,” Steve Nelson, Development Director for The Canby Center, explains. “The long-term impact that we are expecting to make has to do with alleviating poverty in Canby, and this new facility is going to allow us to do a much bigger and better job of that in our community.”

Significant grant support, including a $600,000 award from the M.J. Murdock Charitable trust and a $1.125M grant from the State of Oregon, has created major momentum towards seeing the campaign goal met. However, the majority of contributors to The Canby Center’s campaign — more than 60% — has come from individual donors.

Still, the majority of contributions to The Canby Center’s capital campaign — more than 60% — has come from individual donors.

“These are folks who have compassion for our community, they love what we are doing, and they want to support it,” Steve says. “I think it shows that we are making a difference here, and those who see that want to help. And they know that their dollars are well-stewarded here. We make the most of the gifts that are given, and they have an immediate impact in our community.”

This final, public phase of the campaign will involve broadly sharing the Center’s vision for the building expansion and the positive impact it will make on the community in the coming decades, Steve says. They also hope to use the campaign as a springboard to bring their model of empowering, dignityrestoring poverty alleviation to other communities.

“We’re so excited to be on the home stretch of fundraising for this new building that’s going to expand our reach in the community,” Steve says. “In order to do that and do it well, we know that we need all of our community to be involved and participating in any way they can, [such as] donating, volunteering or connecting with The Canby Center in other ways.”

The

Origins of the Tater Tot
