The weather outside is frightful, but internet is delightful. How to Stay Online in Bad Weather

The last thing anyone wants is a power outage.

Losing internet access makes matters even worse. DirectLink knows that people need access to the internet, especially during challenging weather events. That’s why they’ve engineered their network to stay on when it’s needed most. The DirectLink fiber optic network is comprised of lines buried underground. They are safe from most storm damage, unlike aerial connections. When high winds pick up, trees and limbs can break and fall onto overhead lines, causing outages for any utility services that use those lines. Live aerial wires can also pose a fire risk in forested or grassy areas, exposing vegetation to potential sparks. Buried lines like those DirectLink uses are more reliable in the face of adverse weather conditions.

years, members on fiber with their own generator never lost their internet connection. This enabled them to go online to check in with loved ones and stay updated with news and weather reports. Use caution when connecting a generator to power your home. This should be done before a commercial power outage occurs. Please check with your electrical utility company as to their guidelines on generator installation.

Subscribers with fuel-powered generators can stay connected online if commercial power goes out thanks to DirectLink’s always-on fiber

network. During widespread power outages in recent

IN MEMORIAM

Frank Cutsforth Honoring the man who embodied the Canby spirit Fairgrounds and, most recently, worked his Cutsforth Cruisin Car show this past August. Losing a person of Frank’s caliber is the type of loss that will reverberate through a community for months to come. Here in Canby, things will never be quite the same without him. What WILL continue is the community spirit that Frank helped reinforce in all of us. As a community, we will get through this trying time. We can take this time, as we grieve, to remember all the good times we had with him, and the smile he brought to our hearts. I will alway remember Frank for his laughter and kindness. To me his spirit represents exactly what makes Canby so special. Thank you, Frank, for all you did for your community, May you rest in peace. PHOTO BY JESS & JAY PHOTOGRAPHY

O

ur company is active in more than 50 different communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington, so I meet quite a few people in my line of work. Every once in a while I meet a person who just resonates community spirit. Said people don’t always realize they are a beacon of light to others in their communities, but they are. For them, they are simply doing what comes naturally through the support of local programs and community activities with both their time and energy. They naturally encourage and draw other like-minded individuals to them, which helps benefit their community even more. When you combine this kind of community spirit with a truly kindhearted soul you get a person like Frank Cutsforth. I had the pleasure of getting to know Frank through the many projects we did together as part of the Rotary Club of Canby. We worked together sorting food for The Canby Center, took entry tickets together at the Clackamas County

CAITLAN HONER

C.G. Honer Local fantasy author self-publishes her first book!

T

By Dennis McNabb, Staff Writer

here is a common conception that “everyone has at least one book in them,” that we all have a story to tell, it’s just a matter of putting pen to paper. But if that was the case, we’d all be authors. The truth is, writing a novel takes time — a lot of time — plus patience, discipline, and resolve, and the vast majority of us just don’t possess that kind of determination. Even for those who do, there is the issue of developing that seed of an idea into a logical and compelling narrative that might resonate with others. It’s really quite a remarkable accomplishment when anyone succeeds in doing so, and it is an event worthy of recognition, praise and support. Caitlan “C.G.” Honer, who resides right here in Canby, just released her first novel, “These Gilded Bones May Bloom,” in 2023, and fans of the Fantasy Genre should take note! While this short story anthology is blooming with an eclectic mix of comedy, dark academia, gothic literature, and horror, it’s primarily a fantasy novel. Taken directly from her write-up on Amazon, the book is described this way: “29 short stories. Three unique worlds. One navigates battlefields of countryside and cobblestone. Another ensnares lost souls and sweethearts. And the last is tormented by deities better left forgotten.” “These Gilded Bones May Bloom” [is] a collection of enemies and lovers, sprawling cities and hungry seas, stretching from the hidden magic of

16 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

our own world to the far reaches of your wildest dreams and nightmares. Journey through the Ash Woods, a dangerous forest guarding the body of a long-dead soldier. Follow a thief as he steals into an extravagant garden party. Study the siren of Berkshire University, and the student hellbent on setting her free. Brought to life through sweeping prose and lush illustrations, lose yourself in tales where the morally gray is king, fate doesn’t play fair, and “The End” isn’t always what it seems. I had the pleasure of speaking with C.G. and found her to be both incredibly humble and passionately engaging with regard to her work. She has been writing for over a decade, honing her craft while establishing a vast and magical realm populated with a recurring cast of characters. Inspired to become a published author on her “golden birthday” (she turned 29 on the 29th of January), this book of 29 stories was released on that day to rave reviews, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg. For those who enjoy these stories and wish to delve deeper, she has a collection of manuscripts (in various stages of completion) which she is currently developing and they are all centered around many of the same characters developed in her first book. Influenced by the likes of Leigh Bardugo and Holly Black, C.G.’s brand of YA Fantasy is beautifully crafted with unforgettable characters and genuine emotional depth. The book cover art is gorgeous, and the currentlyavailable edition includes illustrations! Order your copy on Amazon today and catch this talented young writer on the rise! THE HISTORY OF SANTA CLAUS

The Magical Legend of Santa Claus 1600 years in the making

A

By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

s the holiday season rolls around, Santa Claus assumes center stage. But where exactly did this rotund, jovial old man in a red suit originate, and how did he become the iconic symbol of Christmas that he is today? In truth, the history of Santa Claus is a fascinating tale that intertwines folklore, legends, and a sprinkle of entrepreneurial ingenuity. Santa Claus, as we know him today, traces his roots back to a number of historical figures, each contributing to the contemporary version we know and love. Perhaps the earliest inspiration for Santa Claus was Saint Nicholas, a Christian bishop of the 4th century, renowned for his acts of kindness and gift-giving. In time, Saint Nicholas became the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants, archers and brewers, among others. In the British Isles, a character known as Father Christmas emerged during the mid-17th century and was frequently depicted as a bearded man garbed in green, symbolizing the spirit of the season. By the 18th century, however, the concepts of Father Christmas and Saint Nicholas merged, resulting in a hybrid figure that blended elements from both traditions. The American version of Santa Claus began to take shape in the 18th century. Influenced by Dutch and German settlers, the name “Santa Claus” evolved from the Dutch term “Sinterklaas.” During this period, “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”), a poem published in 1823, played a pivotal role in shaping the modern image of Santa. This poem described Santa

18 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

as a rotund gift-giver in a red suit who utilized chimneys rather than the front door for his Christmas visits. The poem, attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, established not only Santa’s magical nighttime journey around the world delivering toys to children, but specified his vehicle of choice as a sleigh powered by eight reindeer with specific names and attributes. Also introduced in the poem was the idea of Santa monitoring children on his “naughty and nice” list and filling stockings accordingly. The classic image of Santa Claus in a red suit with a white beard was tweaked further in the 1930s due to a marketing campaign by Coca-Cola. The company’s advertisements depicted Santa as plump, rosy-cheeked, and garbed in a red and white outfit and hat. Although Santa had been portrayed in robes of other colors prior to this marketing campaign, CocaCola’s version of Santa Claus was embraced by the popular imagination and remains the image we associate with him to this day. As the holidays roll around, and images of Santa Claus abound, know that, like so many things in life, Santa has evolved from his ancient origins as Saint Nicholas and Father Christmas, to the iconic figure of Christmas cheer crafted by an imaginative poet and creative corporate advertising. One thing is for certain, whether you’re a child or an adult, the holidays would not be the same without Santa, his reindeer and the spirit of the season that he represents to so many around the world!

BEAUTY TIPS

DIVINE COMPLEXIONS

Winter Skincare

 Like your cleanser, your moisturizer

Battling dryness and achieving balance

T

he crisp air has arrived, and that calls for re-examining your skincare routine! Our skin becomes drier in the cooler months because of lower humidity, warmer showers, and harsh winds and weather, too. These elements negatively affect the outer most layer of the top layer of our skin, the stratum corneum — also called our skin barrier. If this layer is damaged in any way, it can lead to dryness, redness and irritation.

How to Winterize Your Skincare Routine

 Change your cleanser from a foaming type to a richer, milky

option for greater hydration.  Serums for wintertime should include vitamin B and a hyaluronic acid to help hydrate your skin. Vitamin B is an anti-inflammatory and prevents evaporation of moisture from the skin. Hyaluronic acid helps pull moisture toward it. A good hyaluronic acid serum will contain various molecular weights, hydrating your skin at different levels of epidermis. Choose one such as Epionce Intense Defense Serum (1). Another key ingredient is lactic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid that helps significantly improve the skin’s appearance and keep it naturally hydrated.

Most skincare lines make a richer formula.  Masks continue to be a great skincare tool to boost your skin’s results. For the wintertime, one of my most favorite masks is the Enriched Firming Mask from Christine Epionce (2), applying it after your nightly Lewy skincare routine and sleeping with it on. So just because it is winter, it is still recommended to wear at least SPF 30 daily.  When it comes to skincare, you know I always recommend medical grade. If you’re going to spend money taking care of your skin, I recommend medical-grade products that allow penetration to deeper layers of the skin, giving better results.

Winter Spa Treatments

 Winter is an amazing time for facials, especially HydraFacial.

The treatment helps exfoliate dead dry skin while infusing hydration for that ultimate glow.  Now is also the perfect time for a peel, an exfoliating spa treatment using different alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy acids to exfoliate the skin, giving it a more radiant, even and brighter appearance. Certain peels also greatly help with anti-aging.  Another ideal winter spa treatment is dermaplaning, a manual exfoliation treatment to remove the top dead layer of your skin. Pair this with a HydraFacial for the ultimate winter renewal.

OREGON BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: MARY JANE HOLMES SHIPLEY DRAKE

Overcoming the Odds Matriarch of pioneering Oregon family conquers extraordinary circumstances

M

By Oregon Black Pioneers

ary Jane Holmes Shipley Drake was one of the first African Americans to live nearly their entire life in Oregon, and she was the matriarch of a large family of early black residents. She was born Mary Jane Holmes in Missouri in 1841, one of six children of Robin and Polly Holmes. The entire Holmes family was enslaved by Nathaniel Ford. Before leaving Missouri for Oregon, Ford promised the Holmes their freedom upon arrival if they would help him establish his new farm. The Holmeses joined Ford’s family in their trip west, bringing along their three youngest children, including Mary Jane. The Fords settled in Rickreall in 1844, and Robin Holmes helped build the family’s home as well as a cabin for his own family. By law, Ford had three years to free the Holmeses upon entering Oregon. Ford, however, violated the law and continued to hold the family as slaves until 1850. That year, Ford finally granted Robin and Polly their freedom along with their newborn baby, but The Shipley Family historical marker refused to free the Holmes’ in Philomath, Oregon three other children. In a desperate attempt to free his children, Robin Holmes took the extraordinary act of bringing suit against Ford. Although he had little chance of victory, the chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court ruled in Holmes’ favor in 1852. The court found that as a free territory, Ford had no legal authority to keep the Holmes’ children enslaved in Oregon. Victorious, the family was reunited as free persons. Although free, the family was still poor. Robin and Polly moved to Marion County to start a farm, while Mary Jane continued to live with the Ford family, earning money as a domestic servant. When she was 16, Mary Jane met Reuben Shipley, a formerly enslaved farmer who had been emancipated upon reaching Oregon. Mary Jane and Reuben made plans to marry, but Ford refused to allow the marriage unless he was compensated for Mary Jane’s release – essentially demanding that Shipley buy Mary Jane’s freedom, despite Mary Jane being

legally free already. Reuben paid Ford nonetheless. The $700 payment is equivalent to over $19,000 today. For the next 18 years, Mary Jane and Reuben were active members of an agrarian community called Plymouth in present day Philomath. The couple established a large farm and raised six children there. In 1861, the Shipleys even donated three acres of land from their property to create the Mt. Union Cemetery in Philomath on the condition that blacks be allowed to be buried there. Reuben was later buried there himself in 1875. Mary Jane would remarry the same year, wedding R.G. Drake. The couple would have five children together, making Mary Jane a mother of eleven. She continued to live near Corvallis the rest of her life, outliving both of her husbands and all but one of her children. She died in 1926 at age 85. Oregon Black Pioneers is Oregon’s only historical society dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences of African Americans statewide. CANBY CHRISTMAS PARADE / LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Light Up the Season An evening of holiday magic downtown

T

By Angie Helvey, Contributing Writer Photos courtesy of Tyler Nizer and Tyler Franke

he Christmas season is here, and it’s time to join your friends, family, and neighbors on Friday, December 1st, for the 22nd Annual “Light Up the Night.” The dazzling light displays ignite the holiday spirit in the hearts of all ages, as you know if you’ve ever visited downtown Canby in December. This year’s decorations are the most beautiful yet, so don’t miss one moment of this magical night! A lighted parade kicks off the evening at 6pm, beginning near Knight School and looping through downtown before ending at the gazebo in the heart of Wait Park and near the base of the town’s tremendous Christmas tree. Floats by local businesses and classic cars adorned with colorful, glittering lights will march through, followed by the Canby Police and, finally, the Canby Fire District as they deliver Santa and Mrs. Claus to the park. Santa will be heartily welcomed with cheers from the crowd and the holiday harmonies of The Oregon Trail Pitchpipers, a Barbershop Harmony Society musical group. Then, it’s time to announce “Who Lights Up Canby?” Voted on by the town, the winner of this title contributes to the community all year long and embodies the city’s spirit through kindness and positive energy. “Part of

what makes Canby so unique is the people who are here to support our local businesses, our local events and our children,” explains Jamie Stickel, Economic Development Director & Communications Specialist for the city. “We want to showcase these stories and have an opportunity for them to light up the park.” When the winner flips the switch and the lights go on, the explosion of excitement and joy amongst the crowd is palpable. “That moment is pure holiday magic,” says Economic Development & Tourism Coordinator Tyler Nizer. “You see the joy on people’s faces, from little children to grandparents.” Canby Parks and Public Works creates the delightful display, and they start working on it right after Halloween. “So much time and effort goes into making it look different and unique every year; they always switch up the theme,” Tyler says. Once the park is lit, the celebration continues with holiday music by Willamette Valley Big Band, and children of all ages are invited to chat and take a photo with Santa. Local organizations will be handing out complimentary treats like hot chocolate and glow sticks, and it’s the perfect night to check out local downtown businesses to grab a bite

or do a little Christmas shopping. The event always occurs on the first Friday in December, so mark your calendar this year for a fun evening of sparkling holiday cheer. “Canby is a

special place year-round, so this event is all of that goodness in one,” Jamie says. “Everyone has that childlike spirit and wonder. It’s something we’re really proud of. It’s one of those small-town events you hear about, and it’s just as wonderful as you could imagine.” Light Up the Night is sponsored by the City of Canby, Astound Broadband and Columbia Distributing. For parade registration at no cost, or if you’re a resident, business, or nonprofit looking to get involved, contact Tyler Nizer at NizerT@canbyoregon.gov.

“MEAT ” THE

Proudly sponsored by EBNER’S CUSTOM MEATS in honor of their service

Stinson VETERAN Charlie PROUD NAVY VETERAN BY DENNIS McNABB, STAFF WRITER harlie Stinson grew up in a military household. His father fought in the Army during WWII. It wasn’t necessarily his life’s ambition to follow in his father’s footsteps, but while he was in college, the Vietnam War started and the draft was employed. As chance would have it, he was in the process of transferring schools and had lost his student deferment. So, rather than waiting to be drafted, he proactively enlisted. That way he could choose which branch of the military he would enter. He chose the Navy. He was studying atomic energy and physics in college, so he specifically chose to enter the nuclear division of the Navy. Following bootcamp, he

C

entered Machinist Mate School, then went on to Nuclear Power School where he completed six months of classroom training as well as six months of fieldwork testing prototypes. Taking advantage of the opportunity, he applied for a Navy scholarship program

and ended up going to the University of Colorado to complete his degree in applied mathematics. Even with all of that schooling under his belt, he next went to Officer Candidate School and, upon graduation, was commissioned as an Ensign. But his studies didn’t end there. Next, he was sent to Damage Control School, and then finally assigned to his first tour of duty on the USS Pyro (AE-24). The USS Pyro was an ammunition ship that carried upwards of 5,000 tons of munitions and guided missiles to transfer to other warships in “underway replenishment” details. While on the USS Pyro, Charlie was deployed to the Western Pacific multiple times. Returning to the U.S. in 1976, he married Denise, a woman

he met while stationed at Concord Naval Weapon Station, and who is his life partner to this day. In 1977, he was transferred to a commissioning crew aboard the brand new Spruance-class destroyer, the USS Merrill. As standard protocol for new ships, the crew was tasked with spending the vast majority of that first year at sea inspecting and testing all of the onboard systems. And in August of 1978, Charlie resigned his commission in the Navy. Reflecting back on his time in service, Charlie had nothing but positive things to say. He is proud to have served his country, he served it well, and it ended up being a mutually beneficial relationship — his experience set him on course for a second career lasting 32 years, with NW Natural. Starting out as a special projects engineer, he later retrained and became licensed as a Petroleum Engineer. But, as Charlie said, that’s a whole different story! Charlie is a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. Next time you see him in town, be sure to thank him for his service!

ELLO, MY NAME IS HANNAH ELLISON. I have been a licensed broker since 2017, working as an assistant for Ellison Team Homes, and then taking clients of my own starting in March of 2020. Over the past couple of years, it has been an interesting journey to say the least, but I’m so glad I have been able to stick it out and continue on in my dream career. I specialize in helping first-time home buyers, but I love working with everyone, be it buying or selling their home. I’m proud to say that my wife, Brooke, and I bought our first home together here in Canby, and we’re so glad we get to continue calling this beautiful town our home! It feels like we have lived in Canby our whole lives, and we’re

so in love with this community, and the people and businesses that make it up. We have filled our home with our dog, Maggie Mae, and our two cats, DONNA & MATTHEW Buddy and Jovie — yes, from the movie “Elf”. If I’m not working, you will find me spending time with my friends and family, or drumming and singing in one of a couple of bands I’m in. It is my greatest pride to be a part of our family business, and I cannot wait to continue the legacy my momma has established by taking amazing care of our clients, and treating them like our own family.

Celebrating Canby with a Heart of Gratitude

I

By James M. Hunsaker

n the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s easy to overlook the simple yet profound act of thankfulness. In Canby, though, we’ve mastered the art of gratitude, and it’s this spirit of appreciation that makes our community truly special. As we gather in the cozy embrace of our town, let’s take a moment to celebrate the heart of thankfulness that beats within each of us. One of the most beautiful aspects of living in Canby is the close-knit community that we’ve built. Here, we know our neighbors by name, and we can always count on a friendly wave and a warm smile. It’s this sense of familiarity and connection that fosters gratitude. We appreciate the support and companionship of our fellow Canby-ites, and we’re grateful for the friendships that have stood the test of time. Nature’s bounty surrounds us, and we have countless reasons to be thankful for the breathtaking landscapes that greet us every day. From the view of the Cascades illuminated by the rising sun to the farms and fields that surround us, we are truly blessed. The beauty of our natural surroundings reminds us to be thankful for the world’s wonders that are right outside our doorstep. But it’s not just the external beauty that we cherish; it’s the internal beauty of our community that truly warms our hearts. In Canby, we often come together to celebrate one another’s successes, be they big or small. We support each other during challenging times and celebrate each other’s milestones, from graduations to weddings to birthdays. This community-wide

32 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

support fills us with gratitude, knowing we have a community that stands by our side through thick and thin. The local businesses that dot our town are another reason for our thankfulness. The family-owned grocery store, the charming coffee shop, and the cozy bookstore are not just places of commerce; they are the heart and soul of our community. When we walk into these establishments, we are greeted with a warm welcome and a sense of belonging. These businesses are the backbone of our town, and we are grateful for their presence. Canby is rich in history, and we are thankful for the traditions and stories that have been passed down through the generations. From the General Canby Days celebrations, the enormous Cutsforth Cruise-In car shows, to the County Fair and 4H livestock auction, these events and traditions remind us of the enduring spirit of our community. We treasure these times, for they connect us to our roots and inspire a sense of pride and gratitude for our town. As we navigate the challenges of life, it’s important to remember that thankfulness is a powerful tool. Gratitude has the remarkable ability to shift our perspective, helping us focus on the positive aspects of our lives, no matter how small they may seem. In Canby, we understand the importance of counting our blessings, and this practice of gratitude enriches our lives in countless ways. Finally, Canby is a haven of thankfulness, where the spirit of appreciation thrives on every corner. We are grateful for the tight-knit community, the natural beauty that surrounds us, the support of our fellow Canby-ites, the local businesses that make our town unique, and the rich history that binds us together. Let’s celebrate the heart of gratitude that beats within our small town, for it is this spirit that makes our community shine brightly. Together, we can continue to nurture and share the joy of thankfulness, making our small town an even more wonderful place to call home.

When Ruby is forced to deliver a box of books to a folk healer living deep in the Cornish countryside, she is brought back to the one place she swore she’d never return. A more sensible soul would have delivered the package and left without rehashing old wounds. But no one has ever accused Ruby of being sensible. Thus begins her visit to Penryth Hall, a foreboding fortress home to her once dearest friend, Tamsyn, and her husband, Sir Edward Chenowyth, who meets a gruesome end, reigniting a wicked curse.

CANBY MUSIC

Unwrapping Music Perfect gifts for musicians of all levels Story and Photos by Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer

A

fter celebrating a decade and a half of serving the community as Canby’s home for all things music earlier this year, Canby Music is ready for a busy holiday season offering the perfect gift or necessary supplies for active and aspiring musicians of all skill levels. Since first opening in a small downtown storefront in 2008, founder and owner Brian Haines and his team have sought to put their customers and their needs first. And, in August 2020, the store completed a move across town into a newly renovated, century-old residence on North First Street, which offered significantly more space for lessons, sales, repairs and other services. In an age of online shopping convenience, the store continues to provide a one-stop shopping experience for musicians and aspiring rock stars of all levels — with a personal and experienced touch no website can substitute. Canby Music offers sales and accessories from the full range of a wide variety of top-quality manufacturers and industry-leading brands, including Fender, Casio, Deering and Breedlove, and can extend in-house financing. For students, beginners and others not quite ready to commit to a big purchase, Canby Music maintains an expansive rental fleet of top-of-the-line instruments. Its team works closely with local band instructors in many area school districts to ensure their instruments meet all qualifications, and repairs and service are included throughout the season. If a student does ultimately decide to buy his or her instrument, all rental fees paid are generously credited toward the final purchase price. And, for those just starting out or looking to take their music to the next level, the store’s repertoire of private, one-on-one lessons taught

by friendly, knowledgeable musicians is second to none. Brian and his staff, all of whom are also musicians and — not surprisingly — love music, are well-known for playing community concerts around town, including the past two years at the Canby Police Department’s Grill and Chill event and atop their annual float in the local Independence Day Celebration. Looking ahead, Brian says the store will soon receive a substantial shipment of new instruments, including brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, following the high demand during the back-to-school season. And, as the holiday season approaches, Canby Music is gearing up for increased foot traffic, anticipating a surge in customers looking for musical instruments and accessories for Christmas gifts. Further into the future, the Canby Music team is looking to establish a weekly open mic night in conjunction with a local restaurant in the year to come. The store is also in preliminary talks with the Clackamas County Fair and Event Center to bring the traditional talent show back into the fold in next year’s fair. The event will feature auditions, categories for youth and adults, and a chance for winners to perform on the big stage during the fair. For more information about lessons or other services, call 503263-2263 or visit canbymusic.com. Canby Music is located at 590 NW 1st Avenue in Canby.

“The Muppet Christmas Carol” (1992) Like all Jim Henson movies, “The Muppet Christmas Carol” is an instant classic. Full of many upbeat musical numbers, funny animal characters, solid jokes, heart and humanity, this is a family-friendly take on Charles Dickens’ 1843 novel “A Christmas Carol.” In the classic story, Ebenzer Scrooge, played here by a curmudgeonly Michael Caine, has grown into an old, lonely miser near Christmas. The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future visit him on Christmas Eve and show him the folly of his ways — choosing money over love, family and friends — and the dire, lonely future that awaits him unless he decides to change. This movie is equally funny and heartwarming as it is a sobering wake-up call to the things that matter most. Also starring Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Steven Mackintosh, Robin Weaver and more. Rated G — 5 & up due to some scary visuals.

“Home Alone” (1990) By far my favorite Christmas movie, Chris Columbus’ “Home Alone” is a hilarious and heartfelt movie about family and redemption. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), troublemaker and the youngest child in a large family, always feels forgotten and resented, and that’s even more apparent when he’s left home alone while his whole family flies to Paris for Christmas. Instead of panicking, Kevin relishes his time alone and becomes more independent — watching inappropriate movies, eating junk food, shooting a BB gun inside, but also grocery shopping and doing laundry. Eventually he runs into local cat burglars Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), who plan to rob his house. And that’s when the fun and chaos escalate into what I consider the greatest prank scenes ever filmed. Scored by John Williams and also starring Catherine O’Hara, John Heard, Kieran Caulkin, John Candy and more. Rated PG for violence and coarse language.

“The Grinch” (2018) Yet another Grinch movie begs the question — how many do we need? Apparently a few more, as this iteration inhabits its own little modern world and adds to the everexpanding Grinch mythology. Narrated by Pharell Williams and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch, the story is simple — the Grinch hates Christmas and the Whos want to make it bigger and brighter than ever, much to his annoyance. A nod and protege to Ron Howard’s “A Grinch Stole Christmas” with a scene-stealing Jim Carrey, this movie is fast-paced, quick-witted and incredibly scored. The music, however, is a very modern take, done by Pharrell Williams and including a combo of classic Christmas, pop, hip hop and acapella. Because this is fully computeranimated, the movie has no limits and is a true visual spectacle. Also starring Cameron Seely, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Mindy Sterling, Angela Lansbury and more. Rated PG for brief rude humor.

Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library or rental kiosk.

Growing a Christmas Tradition Local farm offers U-cut Christmas trees

tree farming, the Drouhards spent the first three years planting their own trees as more land became available following each

season’s commercial tree harvesting. Pursuing their dream of opening a U-cut Christmas tree farm for the community, Amy remarks, “We’d barely unpacked when we started planting trees.” With the ending of the commercial lease this year, the last of those trees will be harvested, leaving Drouhard Heritage

oes your holiday tradition include cutting your own Christmas tree? Or maybe you want to start this tradition? Where do you go to make it happen? Visit Willamette Valley’s Drouhard Heritage Farms, located just south of Canby. Open seasonally for U-cut Christmas trees from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, this family farm offers a small selection of pre-cut trees as well. All trees are presently Douglas firs: additional varieties will be available in future seasons. Amy and Robert Drouhard purchased the Canby Christmas tree farm five years ago from a local couple, Dan and Beryl Fisher, who had owned the house and property since the beginning and were now looking to retire closer to town. Assuming a five-year lease for commercial Christmas

Farms to sell their own U-cut trees as well as some pre-cut trees that will be available at the self-serve stand near the road. Opening late last season, 2022 was looked at as a trial run. This year, however, with the expanded U-cut selection and timely seasonal opening, the Drouhard Heritage Farms operation is in full swing. Continued growth and hosting more customers every year with an aim for them to “come back next year and the year after that,” says Amy, is what this local farming family hopes to offer the community. “For me, continuing the tradition of families coming out, choosing a tree

and cutting it themselves – that whole experience is what we want to build out here,” Robert relates. “It’s a tradition we want to keep alive.” Robert grew up on a hay farm in eastern Washington with a generational history of farming that extends to the Midwest. Amy, who’s from Hubbard, remembers coming out to the Canby area with her family every year after Thanksgiving for a U-cut Christmas tree. “It was a big tradition for us,” she recalls and points out that she also has farming in her blood tracing back through generations. Wanting to carry the U-cut Christmas tree tradition forward for the local community as well as all of Clackamas County, Robert and Amy purchased the property on which they could pursue their dream, naming it “Drouhard Heritage Farms” as a way to honor their families’ rich farming

history. Now home to the couple and their three children, David (6), Genevieve (5) and Josephine (3), Amy and Robert take pride in their ability to be good stewards of the land. They value the trees they plant as a way to help sustain the farm and maintain the land. Furthermore, Drouhard Heritage Farms is able to purchase the seedlings they need directly from a local Canby nursery that is willing to work with a small farm venue. Amy expressed great enthusiasm that their farm business is

able to help support another local Canby business. In addition to Christmas tree farming, the Drouhards are continuing to convert a portion of their land to pasture for raising pasture pork, and are planning to add sheep and cows in the future. They will also be bringing some goats to pasture alongside pigs, and offer a small petting zoo area for the youngsters who come to visit. “Our goal is to do more of a regenerative farming process,” Amy explains. Eventually they plan to offer chicken, lamb and beef as well as pork. Amy and Robert feel privileged to be a part of the agricultural history of the area and to make their way among Canby’s close-knit community. Even more, they share a sense of getting back to what Christmas should really be about – those moments of spending time together.

STAR STUDENTS

PROUDLY SPONSORED BY ROTH HEATING & COOLING

Spiking Success Star senior an exemplary student-athlete

Y

By Ty Walker, Contributing Writer Photos courtesy of Canby Volleyball

ou don’t see many of her kind anymore in competitive high school sports. Three-sport student athletes may not be extinct, but you could say they’re on the endangered species list. Someone who plays more than one sport is becoming more the exception than the rule. Even more of a rarity is the wellrounded athlete, who gets high marks in the classroom and excels playing a different game with each changing season. Canby High senior RayAnne Schedler, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, is that kind of player. Canby Community Advantage Magazine’s Star Student for December is “old school.” She’s a throwback to the time before things got so serious and specialized that it took the fun out of amateur sports. Schedler does it all for the Cougars. She leaves it all out on the court, no matter what she’s playing: In the fall, it’s all about volleyball, winter it’s basketball, and spring it’s tennis. “It gets a little bit busy,” Schedler said about her tight schedule. “But I like it. It keeps me busy. It’s lots of fun.” Playing other ball sports has helped her develop and improve her volleyball game, Canby Head volleyball Coach Terri Jo Schlatter said. Her 5-foot-10 outside hitter has that intuitive ability to hit the ball to the right place at the right time. “We don’t have a ton of multisport athletes like that anymore,” Schlatter said. “One of the reasons she’s a good volleyball player is that she has good ball IQ, like hand-eye coordination. “There are so many angles in volleyball where a ball is coming from one person at that 50 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

angle. You’ve got to redirect it at this angle. Your brain has to compute that quickly. Ray just has that sense I guess.” Schedler’s teammates look up to her for leadership and voted her team’s most valuable player. The Cougars captain, who lettered each of her four years on varsity, also earned second team allleague honors for her stellar play. Canby finished in seventh place this fall with a 6–10 record in the Northwest Oregon Conference. Despite the losing record, Schedler put a positive spin on the season. “We didn’t win as much as we wanted to but it was a good season,” Schedler said. “I think I had a pretty good season. I definitely improved.” Schedler led the team offensively with the highest passing average (1.79) and most kill attempts (542). She was the go-to hitter that setters looked for when the game was on the line. “She’s our team leader, a player of character,” Schlatter said. “All the kids respected her as a volleyball player. She never quit. “She was our offensive leader. She was our go-to hitter, our primary ball passer and handler. We got her the ball a lot. We trusted her. We relied on her and had faith that she was going to always bring the energy and effort,” Schlatter added. The coach has nothing but high praise for her best player, as an athlete and person of character. There’s no doubt Schedler will leave some big shoes to fill in Canby when she graduates next year. “It’s a big hole to fill,” Schlatter said. “She’s lettered four years on varsity. That’s a big presence that we’re going to lose.” Schedler wore jersey No. 4 in honor of her coach’s son, AJ Schlatter, who died tragically eight years ago from complications after throat surgery. A student-athlete known

for his work ethic and character, AJ was only 20 years old. “She’s a really good student,” Coach TJ Schlatter said. “That’s why she’s wearing No. 4. She’s a great kid. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like this kid. Her parents did a great job. She’s just a good, wholesome kid.” Although Schedler said volleyball has become her favorite sport, she is looking forward to returning to her center position on the basketball team this winter. She has high hopes for Canby hoops in her final year. “We have a new coach this year, Dana Avgi,” she said. “That’s exciting.” Last year was Schedler’s first on the tennis team. “A couple of my buddies played so they convinced me,” she said. She plans to return as a doubles player in the spring, bringing character, talent, academics, and all.

MONEY MATTERS

CORNERSTONE WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Planning Your Financial Future Create a strategy to avoid fiscal insecurity

◼ Review your spending and create a budget By looking more closely at your credit card and bank statements, you may discover that you’re overspending in some categories that don’t matter as much as they once did. Increasing your awareness of where your money is going may inspire you to eliminate or spend less on products or services that aren’t essential or fully utilized.

◼ Reduce expenses where possible Be mindful of your spending habits to see where you can cut back. Even small changes add up. Maybe you can shave off some expenses by packing your own lunch instead of ordering takeout, for example, or by taking steps to reduce or eliminate overdraft fees or other banking expenses.

◼ Make reducing debt a priority Interest charges can add up quickly, so do what you can to decrease what you owe.

◼ Donate or sell what you’re not using anymore If you have antiques in your attic, an older computer you’re not using, books you’ll never read again — or something else — consider selling or donating them. Selling brings in extra cash, and qualified donations to charities are tax deductible.

◼ Create an emergency fund

D

By Matt Stutes, Certified Financial Planner

o you have a financial plan that will help send your kids to college, take the trips you’ve dreamed about, and enjoy your golden years? If not, you may want to start planning now. Planning ahead is one of the best ways to avoid financial insecurity. Set goals and plan your route to achieving them. The earlier you start, the better off you’ll be.

◼ How to start creating your financial plan Creating a road map of financial goals should include shortterm, intermediate, and long-term goals. While a lot of people think about what they’d like to have at different stages of life, not many of them have an actual plan to reach those goals. Schwab’s 2021 Modern Wealth Survey found that only 33% of Americans have taken the time to create a written financial plan. The other 67% said they didn’t have time to develop a plan — or they didn’t have enough money to bother making one. Getting started on a financial plan doesn’t necessarily take a lot of time or money, though. You can start with small steps, which add up and can get you closer to your goals. Recommendations include: 52 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

If you don’t already have funds set aside for emergencies, try to contribute a set amount every week to a savings account so you can be better prepared. A $20/week contribution, for example, will add up to $1,040 per year (not including interest).

◼ Work with a financial professional Saving money and cutting back expenses is a great start, but a financial advisor can help you determine if you’re saving enough — and what might be the best investments to help you address your financial goals. COOL HOLIDAY DESSERT

Gingerbread Ice Cream Spicy, rich and so smooth

Enjoy gingerbread ice cream with Northwest blackberries and hazelnuts.

burrataandbubbles.com/gingerbread-ice-cream

2 cups heavy cream 2 cups whole milk ¾ cup dark brown sugar, packed ¼ cup unsulphured dark molasses 1 cup peeled fresh ginger, cut into 1-inch pieces 7 egg yolks 1 tablespoon vanilla extract or paste 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground allspice ¼ teaspoon ground cloves * pinch of salt 1 teaspoon fresh orange zest (optional) 1 cup crushed ginger snaps  Whisk together heavy cream, whole milk, sugar and molasses in saucepan. Add ginger. Bring to simmer over medium heat. Whisk periodically to dissolve sugar. Once it simmers, turn off heat. Do not bring to a boil.  Whisk egg yolks, vanilla, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and salt constantly for about three minutes. Add ¼ cup of cream mixture at a time into egg mixture, whisking constantly. Repeat a few times.  Add mixture back to saucepan with rest of cream. Whisking constantly over medium heat, bring back to a simmer. Do not boil. Cook until mixture thickens and covers back of wooden spoon (six to 10 minutes). Turn off heat and stir in orange zest. Steep for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent a film from forming.  Pour mixture over fine-mesh sieve into large bowl and place plastic wrap directly on top of the custard’s surface. Refrigerate at least four hours (overnight is ideal).  Pour custard into ice cream maker and churn according to instructions. In final couple minutes of churning, add crushed ginger snaps. Pour into airtight container and freeze for a few hours. Enjoy!

DICK’S CANBY FORD

Innovative Tailgate, Latest Tech and More Ford 2024 F-Series tough, smart, capable

I

f they start as better ideas, they stay better ideas,” reads the headline of a 1966 Ford print ad showcasing four inventions, including a dual-action tailgate — a forerunner of the modern-day truck tailgate that now features handles, steps and work surfaces. That headline also works as a rallying cry for the F-Series® truck team, which for more than 75 years has delivered a lineup of tough, smart and capable trucks — the last 46 as the best-selling truck lineup in America. F-Series is such a big business that its revenue dwarfs many other large companies. Available starting early 2024, the new 2024 Ford F-150® truck is designed to enhance the ability to tackle challenges with purposeful features, tech and Built Ford Tough® capability to handle tough pursuits. With increased production of PowerBoost Hybrid for 2024, trims from XL through Platinum Plus, and off-road ready models like Tremor®, Raptor® and Raptor R, there’s an F-150 for every truck enthusiast. Serious Technology This truck is smart. It has offerings allowing it to export electric power to help keep job site tools running with Pro Power Onboard; aid both novice and veteran towers to line up and hitch their trailers with Pro Trailer Hitch Assist™; and provide hands-free highway driving using Ford BlueCruise. Many of these productivity-boosting digital features are made possible because of a class-exclusive 5G LTE modem that enables faster mapping, Wi-Fi and Ford Power-Up software updates. Customers can also use their SYNC® 4 digital system to submit voice feedback on functionality or improvements for their F-150. This improved connectivity enables a more seamless transfer of in-vehicle data to FordPass® and Ford Pro™ Telematics, a cloud-based platform that uses vehicle data to give fleet managers access to valuable insights that help accelerate productivity and fleet uptime. The new model is the most connected and the smartest F-150 engineered to date. It starts with 10 standard driverassist features, including the latest versions of Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping System, Blind Spot Information System, Cross-Traffic Alert, Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ and more. The 2024 F-150 will be the first vehicle available in North America with Ford Stolen Vehicle Services.

A Century of Tailgate Innovation The invention of the dual-access tailgate nearly six decades ago wasn’t even the start of Ford’s tailgate prowess. Ford has been innovating the tailgate since the Model A. In trucks, to help make the bed easier to access, Ford introduced a fold-down tailgate step in 2006. Then, Ford added a handle that retracts into the tailgate for added stability. Most recently, Ford added a power up/down tailgate with a work surface featuring integrated rulers, a place to set your mobile device, and a pencil and cup holder. For those wanting even more access, Pro Access Tailgate offers a 100-degree fully opened integrated swing gate and an available rear bumper step — with added width and depth. Standard Bed Storage Box With easier access to the bed, Ford is also adding even more functionality with a new bed storage box located behind one or both rear wheel wells. With easy access from the swing gate, stored items are within arm’s reach — even without opening the tailgate. Growing Hybrid Leadership Ford truck leadership also includes hybrid trucks. Through the first half of 2023, Ford F-150® is the best-selling full-hybrid pickup truck. Ford hybrid truck sales are up 28.1% in the first half of 2023. Right now, 10% of all F-150 trucks sold are hybrids. Ford plans to double the mix of hybrid trucks manufactured for the 2024 model year to give even more customers access to this advanced technology. Easier to Order Customers will be able to more easily build or find the F-150 they are looking for thanks to a simplified ordering experience. Ford has reduced ordering complexity by 90% compared to the 2023 model. This simplification means some popular features — like the extended range fuel tank and Class IV trailer hitch — are now standard. Popular freestanding options like moonroof, Max Recline Seats, axle upgrades, and tow mirrors can still be ordered outside the package offering.

B’s Bake Shoppe

Belinda Goody is the Executive Director/ CEO of the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce. Belinda has been a lifelong entrepreneur — since the age of eight. In her early 20s, she joined the U.S. Air Force and acquired many of the leadership skills that would later prove invaluable. Moving to Oregon in 2007, she purchased and ran a bed & breakfast on the Oregon Coast before establishing her own 501(c)3 nonprofit, which she managed until she turned it over to a new board in 2017. After several years of planning and running events, she began a consulting company helping other nonprofits evaluate their events, activities and various operational processes for peak efficiency. Belinda’s always had the gift of seeing the “big picture” and as the leader of the Canby Area Chamber, she uses her myriad skills to help business owners and the community. She is grateful for the opportunity to make a difference right here in Canby.

Dori Leder is the owner of Cones, Canby’s greatest purveyor of premium soft serve ice cream, milkshakes and ice cream cakes, Prior to opening Cones, Dori already had a full-time job, as a mother to six. It was while on vacation in Hawaii when her family was first introduced to New Zealand real fruit ice cream and the seed of an idea was planted. Dori has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. She has always dreamt of doing something special, but it wasn’t until she discovered this unique approach to serving premium ice cream that she took action. Using Umpqua premium ice cream and adding your choice of “mix-ins,” her tasty treats are like nothing you’ve ever experienced. And the sky’s the limit regarding flavors. This is not just ice cream, it’s an experience! With a warm and inclusive atmosphere, this is a great place for families to gather!

Bethany Zito is the owner of B’s Bake Shoppe. She was exposed to baking and the opportunities available to strong, entrepreneurial women from childhood. Both her mother and stepmother worked in bakeries where she spent a lot of time and experienced a lot of amazing baked goods. At 16, she got her first job at a restaurant and attended a special culinary program in high school. From there, she worked her way through a series of hotels and finedining establishments, honing her skills over the years and keeping an eye open for the opportunity to open her own place. B’s Bake Shoppe is the culmination of all of those years of experience and expertise, and a dream come true. It is not only a place to find the best breads, sandwiches and desserts in town, but it’s a place for friends and family to commune. Bethany’s friendly service and welcoming atmosphere — along with her newly expanded dining area — is the perfect spot for your next gathering.

Megan Waterman is the owner of The Book Nook. An avid reader from early childhood, Megan has always had a passion for story. When she met her husband, she discovered another enthusiastic reader who won her heart by taking her to a bookstore on their first date. Reading and sharing books became a cornerstone of their relationship, and with his support — and her family’s — she opened The Book Nook in 2017 to share that passion with the broader Canby community. Offering new and used books, games and gifts, this cozy little store is a celebration of all things story. Megan believes that we all have a story to tell and she hopes that at The Book Nook, she has provided everyone with a safe space to both discover new ones and share their own with others. Come down to The Book Nook today and let your imagination run wild!

Vanessa Zimmerman is a senior loan officer with 11 years of experience in the field. Previously, she spent 12 years as a financial coach after first teaching high school. When she was introduced to a financial services company, she found both a passion and a knack for the work. What began as a parttime hobby soon turned into a full-time career, and she’s never looked back. At U Mortgage, Vanessa understands all too well how overwhelming finances can be for a lot of people. She herself understood very little and often felt overwhelmed by it before diving in, but it’s that empathy that has brought her such success. She enjoys being able to utilize her teaching skills paired with all of the knowledge she has acquired over the years to help educate others. Vanessa provides the best experience available in the industry by carefully walking clients through the mortgage process. If outstanding communication is a priority when looking for a mortgage expert, contact Vanessa today.

Dr. Rachel Yamakawa owns Ohana Orthodontics. Her passion for orthodontics came at a young age, when getting braces changed her life. The transformation was so profound she was inspired to work at a dentist’s office in college and to ultimately attend dental school. Now, after working for years in multi-doctor practices, she owns her own and has the enviable position of positively impacting other people’s health and confidence in the same manner she experienced herself. Ohana means “family” in Hawaii, where she grew up, and it’s an apropos title since that is exactly how she treats both her staff and patients. She has a fantastic team who’ve been there for years — even prior to her purchase of the practice — and they have provided a wonderful sense of continuity. An appointment at Ohana Orthodontics is like a visit with a beloved family member: easy, comfortable and smile-affirming.

MEET THE ARTIST

ISABEAU WAIA’U WALKER

From Teacher to Full-Time Musician ‘Bright gloom’ indie music makes lasting impression

I

By Dennis McNabb, Staff Writer

sabeau Waia’u Walker is all of those things and so much more, all wrapped up in one perfectly imperfect package. Born in California and raised in Hawaii as a Kanaka Maoli wahine (Native Hawaiian woman), where her family returned to shortly after she was born. She moved “temporarily” to Oregon to attend Warner Pacific University, but fell so deeply in love with the local community she never left. It’s a fortunate turn of events for us, because after a lifetime of considering her talents to be avocational, she recently retired from teaching to commit full-time to the pursuit of her passion: music. A ubiquitous presence in her life since childhood, music was, and is, simply an integral part of Isabeau’s Photo by Mary Putulin identity. It’s a key aspect of her culture. It’s in her blood. Her entire family sings and/or plays an instrument, and those songs that they “performed” during family gatherings not only planted the seeds of her inspiration, but also helped to inform and develop her unique sound. Make no mistake, Isabeau has “arrived.” One listen to her most recent output will quell any doubts about that. Much like the legendary “Road to Hana,” it has been a long and windy road. Tentative steps were initially taken in the early 2000s. Isabeau recorded an EP, but the songs were experimental, a little rough by her current standards, and she had yet to find her voice. A second EP followed a few years later. That one was better, but still more of a learning experience than an actual representation of who she is as an artist. It wasn’t until 2020, when she put out her 3rd EP and first official release, entitled “Better Metric,” that she discovered her sound. To announce her arrival in grand fashion, her track, “Woman” from that EP made OPB’s list of top songs in 2020. Of course, COVID hit at the same time and all of her plans to tour and promote the album were instantly scrapped. That could have derailed a lesser creative, but instead she utilized that time

70 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

to write and record her “first full length, “The Body,” which came out in May of 2022. A highly personal and emotional album, the songs on this one delve deep into what it means to be a woman, to reconnect with the physical body as well as the spiritual and to embrace every facet of what that entails. Taken directly from her journal, her lyrics provide a window into the soul of an incredible woman and an amazing artist. To paraphrase from her website, Isabeau is “bright gloom.” Her songs are “soothing and soft while powerful.” They are “accessible while complex,” “sweet [while] aching.” There is a duality that reverberates through the layers of her music which brings such tension and depth that it invites repeated listenings for full digestion. Beautiful and devastating, her haunting and ethereal voice makes a lasting impression, no small feat in today’s musical landscape. And this is just the beginning. With the support of her producer, Ryan Oxford, and manager, Dan Cable, Isabeau has returned to the studio and began recording her second full-length album. She also has a crowdfunding campaign—to support paying the artists involved—launching next month. Do yourself a favor and seek out this local rising star. You can stream her music on Spotify, follow her on Instagram @ beaubeaubarina, or watch her amazing collection of videos on Youtube. If you want to support the cause, you can find her on Patreon.com\Isabeau. And don’t forget to watch her live shows! She performs both as a solo act and also with the band, Y La Bamba.

Alarming Questions  Why should you have smoke alarms in your home? You are more likely to survive a home fire with working smoke alarms. During a fire, you may have less than three minutes to escape. Smoke spreads fast and smoke alarms alert you to danger and provide time to escape.  Smoke alarm vs. smoke detector? A smoke alarm is a self-contained smoke-sensing device. A smoke alarm detects and alarms. A smoke detector is a smoke-sensing device that is not self-contained and operates as part of a central control system. A smoke detector detects smoke and sends the information to an alarm panel. (ORS 479.250)  Where do I install smoke alarms? Smoke alarms shall be installed in each sleeping room at the time of construction and in the corridor or area giving access to sleeping areas according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Where sleeping areas are located on an upper level, the smoke alarm shall be installed in an accessible location as close as practical to the center of the ceiling directly over the stairway.  Are smoke alarms required on every level and in all bedrooms? Yes, they are required on each level (including the basement). Alarms should be installed in each sleeping room as per the applicable requirements of the State Building Code at the time of construction. The OSFM recommends adding smoke alarms to each bedroom or other areas used for sleeping for increased protection. Some local ordinances have additional requirements.  Where should smoke alarms not be installed? Smoke alarms shouldn’t be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and unheated areas where moisture, steam, frost, cooking vapors and exhaust fumes can cause a nuisance alarm.

221 S. PINE STREET, CANBY WWW.CANBYFIRE.ORG

 How often do I replace my smoke alarm? Smoke alarms should be replaced according to the National Fire Protection Association, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code (72-14.4.7) Replacement of smoke alarms in one- and twofamily dwellings: “Unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer’s published instructions, single and multiple-station smoke alarms installed in one- and two-family dwellings shall be replaced when they fail to respond to operability tests, but shall not remain in service longer than 10 years from the date of manufacture.” (NFPA 72)  Can I replace a hard-wired smoke alarm with a smoke/carbon monoxide (CO) alarm? Yes. You may replace a hard-wired smoke alarm with a hard-wired battery backup smoke/CO alarm. Switching from one manufacturer’s unit to another may require an adapter plug. Manufacturers advise adapter plugs may be changed using wire nuts and may require the services of a licensed electrician.  Are 10-year batteries and a hush feature required in Oregon? All ionization smoke alarms sold in Oregon that are solely batteryoperated shall be packaged with a 10-year battery. All ionization smoke alarms shall include a hush mechanism that allows a person to temporarily disengage the alarm for a period of not more than 15 minutes. (ORS 479.297)  What should I do when the smoke alarm sounds? Get outside and stay outside. Crawl low under the smoke to get out. Call 911 or your local emergency number for help. Never go back inside for people, pets, or belongings.  What if my smoke alarm sounds and it is a nuisance alarm? Many smoke alarms come with a hush feature, a button on the alarm you push to silence nuisance alarms for up to 15 minutes. Nuisance alarms can be caused by steam from showers or smoke from cooking.

THE HISTORY OF COFFEE

The Humble Bean to Bold Beverage From 9th century North Africa to your local cafe By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

A

s rain falls from the skies of the Pacific Northwest, so too does coffee pour into the cups of local residents adding pep to their step and steamy, warm, comfort to lift the spirits. But where did coffee come from in the first place, and just how did it become one of the most popular beverages around the world? While no one can definitively pinpoint precisely when coffee was invented, nor the name of the first person to roast coffee beans, grind them, and mix them with water, historians agree that coffee originated in the areas of modern-day Ethiopia and Yemen. Legend tells of a 9th century goat herder named Kaldi, who noticed that his goats, after eating coffee berries, became so energetic that they barely slept all night. Kaldi reported his discovery to the abbot of a local monastery who brewed a drink with the berries which increased alertness for the monks through their long hours of evening prayers. It wasn’t long before word spread to the nearby Arabian Peninsula of the miraculous drink, and traders 82 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

It is the Austrians who The Caribbean, are credited with the addition of milk Central, and South and sugar to coffee. to the island of Martinique, despite attempts by a saboteur to kill the plant, an attack by pirates, and severe storms at sea. This hardy seedling went on to parent all the coffee trees cultivated throughout this part of the world — a region that has become one of the premier coffee production areas on the planet. Brazil’s famous coffee owes its start to Francisco de Melo Palheta, who was dispatched by the governor of Brazil to help mediate a conflict between neighboring French and Dutch Guiana. Arriving in Cayenne, the capital city of French Guiana, part of Palheta’s mission was to smuggle some coffee plants which were closely guarded by the French. As the story goes, a romantic dalliance between Palheta and the wife of the Governor of Cayenne led to her passing a bouquet to a Brazilian officer containing a coffee seedling concealed among the flowers. This seedling was supposedly the progenitor of Brazil’s coffee industry. Whether the romantic part of the story is true or not, it is documented that Palheta was successful in bringing thousands of coffee seeds and several plants back to Brazil. Gabriel de Clieu By the 18th century, coffee had grown to be one of the world’s most profitable commodities. Consumption and popularity in the U.S. grew, particularly during the Civil War, and enterprising businessmen such as brothers John and Charles Arbuckle grew wealthy selling pre-roasted coffee by the pound to cowboys in the West. James Folger, who peddled coffee to gold miners in California, also profited greatly. Big name coffee brands including Maxwell House and Hills Brothers quickly followed suit. Following World War II, instant coffee was developed, simplifying the coffee-making process, though not necessarily improving the flavor. With the emergence of Starbucks in Seattle in 1971, the quality of coffee available to the consumer improved through better sourcing and preparation techniques. Consistent, quality coffee became available to people across America, with beverages tailored specifically to the palate of each individual customer. Today, the coffee revolution has evolved. Small, independently owned coffee shops are taking it to

the next level. A focus on sustainability, local roasting, and fair trade beans are at the forefront of the new movement. Sourcing, roasting techniques, and brewing methods are all aspects of the equation that today’s coffee entrepreneurs are relentlessly improving in their drive to bring the highest quality coffee to market. So, the next time you’re enjoying a steaming coffee beverage — whether it be a latte, mocha, cold brew, espresso, or just a plain old cup of Joe — know that the history behind the humble coffee bean, and its evolution through time, was a long and arduous journey filled with lively characters, distant places, and enterprising individuals who treasured this miraculous bean of the tropics. LOCAL HISTORY

THE CANBY DEPOT MUSEUM

Preserving the Past Museum offers glimpse into city’s rich history

critical resource for those interested in Canby’s history. The Canby Depot Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the city’s abundant history, carefully preserved and showcased. At the heart of the museum is the depot itself, as well as the beautiful “Our National Bouquet” flower map. Notably, the depot has preserved original elements such as a historical caboose and luggage cart that feel frozen in time. Visitors to the museum will also find an array of primary source documents, providing invaluable information on Canby’s history.

Canby’s Photo Collection One of the most exciting things the Canby Depot Museum offers is a photo collection of Canby dating back to 1850. These photos are both digitalized and printed, and they show the evolution of Canby over the years. The museum is always eager to expand its photo collection, and they have recently put out a call to action asking for more photos from the community. The museum also has High School Yearbooks dated from 1917 to the present, as well as oral histories and other historical media available for viewing.

anby’s beloved Depot Museum serves as the home of the historical society, and a gateway into the vibrant history of Canby. This captivating museum warrants a visit by everyone interested in the illustrious past of this remarkable place. For the Canby Historical Society, the preservation of this history is more than just a duty — it is essential in maintaining the city’s unique identity and serves as a poignant reminder of our common heritage. This beautiful museum is worth visiting to learn about the rich history of this special place. The Canby Depot was a critical asset to the town until its closure in 1976. The Southern Pacific Railway donated the depot to the city in 1978. Following the donation, the challenge to find a suitable relocation site ensued. In response, the “Save the Depot Committee,” led by city treasurer and historian Myra Weston and other city leaders, spurred community involvement to prevent the loss of this historical landmark. Despite time constraints and complications, the community rallied with fundraising and volunteer efforts to successfully relocate and renovate the depot, which opened as a museum in 1984. HOLIDAY WINE AND CHEESE

Cheese & Wine Essentials for your holiday table

H

By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

ave you ever stood in the wine aisle of your local grocers during the holidays, baffled as to the appropriate wine for meals featuring poultry, beef, pork, or seafood — not to mention the array of appetizers and side dishes? Our guide below will help simplify this process with six wines flexible enough to complement your holiday cuisines from autumn through winter.

Sauvignon Blanc Also referred to as “Sancerre” in France, this medium-light bodied white wine is a winner. It features a crisp, herbal profile perfect for turkey, goose, chicken, or seafood.

Chardonnay A more full-bodied white, Chardonnay is an excellent partner to fish or roast poultry. Likewise, Chardonnay pairs beautifully with beef, should you have guests who prefer to drink only white. In this case opt for an oak-forward Chardonnay, as it will enhance the robust flavors of the beef.

Viognier Not as well-known as other whites, Viognier is a fantastic partner to roast turkey and other poultry dishes. Rounded in body with undertones of honey and spice, some of the best Viognier comes from the Rhone region of France, as well as Australia and South Africa. Like Chardonnay, Viognier can also play well with beef.

Pinot Noir With its bright acidity and versatile nature, Pinot Noir is one of the best choices for the holidays. It excels across the board with poultry, pork, and hearty beef dishes. The Pacific Northwest and California offer many solid choices with fruit-forward characteristics sure to please even the most discriminating palates.

Zinfandel Red Zinfandel has long been considered a great Thanksgiving wine for its ability to compliment turkey while also blending well with cranberry sauce and other sides. Its fruit-forward profile, along with notes of cinnamon, clove and vanilla evoke the holiday season. Zinfandel also performs admirably with beef and pork, should your holiday dinner include a roast or baked ham.

Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon, the “King of Reds,” is the ultimate pairing for beef. Cabernet’s dark, full-bodied character, often reminiscent of currants and black cherry, enhances the hearty flavors of such entrees as prime rib or crown roast.

Syrah/Shiraz Another fabulous red wine to pair with beef is Syrah (known as Shiraz in Australia). This luscious red bursts with complex flavors from pepper to cherry, smoky to floral. Syrah, made in France’s Rhone Valley, is generally known more for its elegance and complexity, while Shiraz is bolder and more fruit-driven. If beef is on the menu, you can’t go wrong with Syrah.

Which Wine to Bring to a Party? Let’s say you’ve been invited to a holiday event and wish to bring a bottle of wine, but you’re uncertain of the menu. The safest choices might be Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Both wines have versatility across a broad spectrum of entrees, and will be welcome additions to the holiday table. All of these featured wines are readily available at your local markets, where helpful staff can assist you in determining the best selections and values for your particular budget. 90 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

Cheese Guide As the holidays roll around, entertaining family and friends takes center stage. For many of us the holiday cheese board is a star player in the food festivities, yet with the plethora of choices available at local markets, assembling it can prove a bit daunting.

Basic Strategy For presentation purposes, select cheeses of different colors, shapes, and sizes. When calculating the amount of cheese to purchase, three ounces per guest is a solid guideline. Thus, if you’re serving three types of cheese and entertaining 12 guests, you should buy at least 12 ounces of each type. If other appetizers will be served, the amount of cheese can be reduced to two ounces. In general, three varieties of cheese—a hard, a semi-hard, and a soft—will provide ample variety for most events.

Hard Cheeses Aged Gouda This Dutch cheese is always a strong player on any cheese board. If you prefer a sharper, nuttier flavor with those delicious salty bits, opt for a Gouda aged at least 10 months. Many of the premier Goudas will be aged up to 18 months or more. Top brands include Beemster, Parrano, and Rembrandt.

Manchego A full-bodied cheese made from sheep’s milk, this Spanish cheese from the La Mancha region is creamy yet nutty with toasty nuances. Aged Manchego has a wonderful granular texture much like aged Gouda, and will be a superb compliment to fruit or meats such as prosciutto, salami, and capicola.

Cheddar A good aged cheddar is always a welcome member of any cheese board. American, English, and Irish cheddars are all fantastic choices, providing slightly different characteristics. In general, the longer a cheddar is aged the sharper the flavor. Tillamook, Kerrygold, and Cabot are all fine choices.

Semi-Hard Cheeses Fontina Originally from Italy, this versatile cheese features a sweet and pungent character nuanced with tones of butter and roasted nuts. It is rich and creamy with an intensity of flavor that increases with age. Sartori, Stella, and Boar’s Head are all excellent brands.

Comté One of the most popular French cheeses, this creamy, mil cheese is a pleasing addition to any cheese board as it blends well with bolder flavored meats and preserves while adding a luxuri us undertone. Jura Flore, Fort Rousses, and St. Antoine are all quality brands.

Soft Cheeses Brie Soft and creamy, with a musky complexion, this French cheese is spreadable and delicious slathered on bread or crackers. Try it warmed and melted. Excellent brands are President, La Bonne Vie, or Dietz and Watson. Marin French is a quality domestic brand

Camembert Another soft spreadable cheese that hails from the Normandy region of France is Camembert. Not quite as creamy as Brie, it is less pungent, and pale yellow in color. Often celebrated as the most popular cheese of France. For festive additions consider cranberry cheeses such as Wensleydale or Celebrity. Crave truffles? Explore the many truffled cheeses on the market such as truffled Brie and Gouda. READ MORE AT CITYHANDSHAKE.COM 91

CANBY ROTARY

A Wicked Good Time Canby Rotary Club Annual Auction

O

By Kelly Romo, Contributing Writer

n Oct. 28, the Rotary Club of Canby hosted its annual auction to raise funds for the Canby Rotary Foundation. This year’s theme was “A Wicked Good Time,” which was perfect timing since it was close to Halloween. For many years now, the Canby community has witnessed one of the most exciting fundraising events around town. For those who may not know, Rotary is a service club whose product is serving. Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. Canby Rotary Club’s Annual Auction has a rich history dating back many years. The auction has grown in popularity over time and has become a beloved tradition in the community. The auction and dinner comprise Canby Rotary Club’s primary fundraiser. It involves a silent and an oral auction that includes the community and fellow Rotarians. These funds have supported many community projects and scholarships for local students. Last year, funds went to help “Canby Ready,” a program to provide generators in case of a sustained power outage. Several years ago, funds went to Providence for a new cancer facility. Funds have also gone to the “Canby Center,” an organization that helps people with groceries and other financial needs. This year’s auction raised $47,000 for the scholarship fund alone. Over time, Rotary has given out over $500,000 in scholarships. The items that are usually available for bidding during the Canby Rotary oral auction include items such as dinners in the home of community members, five nights in a Montana cabin, a behind-the-scenes tour and dinner at the Clackamas County Fair Rodeo, and a tour of the fire station — complete with a ride in the new fire truck, sweet treats, and more. The silent auction is also a significant part of the excitement. Opportunities to golf in several courses around Oregon, tickets to Portland

Trailblazers, wine, etc., are typically available. In addition to the oral and silent auction, Rotarians sell raffle tickets outside of Thriftway in October; this year’s grand prize was $2,500 credit with Alaska Airlines — and you don’t need to be present to win! If you’re interested in donating items to the auction, contact the procurement committee. Keith Galitz, Charlie Stinson, Mike McNulty, or Paul Hauer can be reached via their contact info on the Rotary Club’s website or by simply asking any Rotarian. Whether donating a personal experience or an item, your contribution will help make the Canby Rotary Auction even better. The Canby Rotary Auction is a testament to the community spirit and generosity of the people of Canby. If you did not have the chance to attend this annual event, mark your calendar for next year. It is an opportunity not to be missed! Tickets start selling in September and October, and you can get them online or reach out to any Rotarian. For more info, visit canbyrotary.com.
