Letter From The Publisher Welcome to our April 2022 issue of Canby Community Advantage Magazine. We are incredibly excited to present our spring issue of 2022 and our biggest issue ever, jam-packed with tons of things to see, do, and buy. Let me highlight some of the great local content you’ll find inside this issue. Featured on our cover is Canby’s very own Oregon Roots Real Estate. Rooted in Canby and the community, Cindy McGraw, Nicole Delozier and Sarah Chapin offer a unique angle to real estate with combined decades of experience in construction and real estate. For all of you fans of Easter, we have some great stories inside. If you have ever wondered where the Easter Bunny came from, why we dye eggs or eat candy; look inside. For you movie buffs, check out Donovan’s Easter Feature reviews. This issue also includes a host of busimess spotlights, including: Cutsforth’s Produce Department, Dick’s Canby Ford, Aurora Colony Pub, Main Street Mercantile, Sequoia Tree Service, Granite Transformations, and Patio Cover People! We introduce you to the talents of local musician Sarah Maines, her incredible singing voice and her work in voice habilitation. And this month’s “Meat” The Veteran profile, sponsored by Ebner’s Custom Meats, features Arbie Irwin. Meet this selfless hero and longtime member of the National Association of Atomic Veterans. Then you’ll meet this month’s Student Athlete (sponsored by Roth’s Heating and Cooling). Canby’s Alex Evans is an incredibly talented basketball player (and baseball player too). And finally, we’ve chronicled the history of the Barlow House. I’d also like to offer a big thank you to all the local sponsors of Rotary Club of Canby’s first annual DaddyDaughter Dance on March 12th. It was a smashing success and we’ve got photos inside! As always, throughout this issue are many great local specials offered by a wide variety of Canby area businesses. Our next issue comes out just in time for summer. Until then, we hope everyone enjoys the spring. Matthew Nelson, Publisher

TASTE OF THE TOWN
AURORA COLONY PUB
Friends Gather Here By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos By Carly Carpenter
A
re you looking for a place with amazing food, awesome drinks, and a homey neighborhood atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more? Well allow me to inform you that the search is over, and this fantastic place is just a short drive up Hwy 99 in downtown Aurora. The Aurora Colony Pub has been located in the heart of the town for what seems like forever, and if you ever drive north on 99E from Woodburn to Canby you’ve definitely seen it. You may have even been there before, but if you haven’t gone recently you may not recognize it. Seven years or so ago, before Janae and Corey Barton purchased it from the previous owners, it was simply a humble local pub. After taking over, the Bartons have revitalized, remodeled, and renovated the place, turning it into a much more family-friendly establishment. Of course, the full bar and all of the usual pub
activities and games are still available, but until 9:00pm kids and families are able to enjoy the establishment as well. As the regular customers who have frequented the pub for years will attest, it’s always been known for great service, great drinks, and a friendly atmosphere, and they certainly haven’t lost any of their regulars due to the upgrades. They’ve simply improved upon every aspect of the business in the hopes of bringing in a wider customer base. 10 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
For starters, they’ve added a lot of amazing food to their already great menu. They still have all the traditional favorites that the pub had a reputation for, including their legendary made-fromscratch clam chowder, halibut fish and chips, fried razor clams and oysters, burgers, and hot sandwiches. To give their customers even more to choose from, they are very excited to announce their brand new commercial broaster! This is not a common piece of equipment in most pubs, and there are
very few places in the area where you can get the delectable broasted chicken. The broaster works by deep-frying and pressure cooking simultaneously, which gives the chicken a nice crispy coating outside while maintaining all the natural moisture inside. If for no other reason, you must stop by to taste this culinary treat, because I guarantee that you’ll want to come back for more.
the Bacon Cheeseburger Salad. Intrigued? Simply take all of the same delicious ingredients of a standard bacon cheeseburger, nix the bread, serve it on a bed of fresh lettuce, and voila! You have a lighter and yet equally satisfying meal to enjoy. There’s also a whole slew of other delicious entrée salads to choose from, and they even offer gluten-free buns and beer.
If the tantalizing aroma of the broasted chicken doesn’t have your mouth watering when you walk in the door, why not try out one of their new pasta selections? Choose from homemade Spaghetti, Triple Mac and Cheese, or the Pub Fettuccini Alfredo, each made from scratch with fresh ingredients. They also have some amazing weekly specials, such as All You Can Eat Spaghetti Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, and Prime Rib every Saturday night. This rises far beyond your standard pub fare! For those who may be watching their diet or have a sensitivity to gluten, don’t worry about missing out. Another new addition that has quickly become one of their more popular items is

The Aurora Colony Pub is a local favorite that you won’t want to miss out on. Bring the whole family in for an awesome meal, then stay to explore Aurora’s charming downtown. Or if you’re looking for that traditional adult-only pub atmosphere, come on in at 9:00pm for some good times. You’re guaranteed to enjoy the great food, great drinks, and great service, and you’ll definitely want to come again! The Aurora Colony Pub is located at 21568 Highway 99E in Aurora, just a 15 minute drive from Wilsonville. Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.
Easter Bunny
According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!
Easter Eggs
From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Later, missionaries may have painted biblical scenes on eggs and used them to explain the story of Easter to children. 20 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE 20 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Easter Candy
Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter. Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com
Can you train too much?
L
ike most things in life, you get as much from your training as you put into it. Work hard, get hard. Goof off, stay soft. Unlike many things, though, it’s easy to reach a
point of diminishing returns, and the penalties of exceeding this threshold can be significant. Energy levels, mood, and performance drop, sleep decreases, and soreness rises, and then just when
you think that’s the worst of it, for all your heartache, you don’t see even marginally better results. Instead, you get progressively worse results. Studies have shown training 10 sets of 10 reps for each excercise in your workout can result in less muscle and strength gains when compared to a lower-volume routine of 5 sets of 10 reps. To pile on the stress that your workout puts on the body, your must also recover from stresses from day to day life, like: work, finances, relationships and more. These can all limit the amount we can do in the gym as well. How, with all these evolving stresses, can you tell if
you need to dial back the over training and increase your recovery? There are plenty of signs but here are just a few indicators to watch for: 1.) Are your workouts becoming a bear? Weights decreasing, stamina fading, lack of enthusiasm? 2.) Feeling tired in the gym but too amped to sleep? Despite the lack of energy during the day, you sleep like a too manic toddler. 3.) You’re training hard every day of the week. No one can train or play hard seven days a week without fail, even elite athletes on PED cocktails eventually fail. Listen to your body, recognize your limits and slow down before you fall off!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
SERVING WITH IMPACT By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
L
ocal nonprofit The Canby Center is busy as ever, as their team of staff and volunteers works hard to provide a fresh solution to poverty!
“We have a lot happening right now with just meeting the basic needs of people,” Development Director Steve Nelson explains. “For us, that means a focus on food. During the pandemic, there was this huge explosion of need that we were able to respond to. We had to do a lot of adapting to make that happen, but fortunately, we had great support from the community.” From February to March 2020, the Center saw demand for food more than quadruple, as layoffs, business closures, and other economic uncertainties created—or in some cases, exacerbated—food and housing insecurity for many families. The Center was able to weather the storm, Nelson says, with tremendous financial support from the community, as well as food donations and countless volunteer hours from partnering agencies like Canby Police and Canby Fire as well as individuals. “It’s leveled off now, to a certain extent,” Nelson says. “But it’s still much more than twice as much as what we were serving before the pandemic. So the changes that we made to be able to serve those needs well are still in place, and we’re really busy.” With some of the physical needs lessening and stabilizing in the local community, the Center hopes to begin to shift some energy to other areas in the new year as part of its holistic approach to serving the community. Nelson says the Center has been engaging in numerous discussions with the Canby School District about various ways the nonprofit could help serve 26 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE 26 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
local students and families in need, such as the return of its popular Reading Mentors program. In that program, volunteer mentors spend an hour each week reading one-on-one with students (a half-hour with each), talking with them and reading with them—with the ultimate goal of taking a relationship-based approach to help inspire a love of learning. “It’s really a way for them to have a regular connection with an adult, doing something that’s going to have lifelong value for them,” Nelson explains. For older students, the Center hopes to soon launch a new program called Growing Together, a youth mentoring program for middle school-age children that the nonprofit has been developing for the past few years. Like Reading Mentors, it involves partnering kids with mentors and role models in the community for tutoring purposes, but also has a focus on building character through developing traits like respect, kindness, and integrity. “That’s an exciting program that we have designed,” Nelson says. “We’ve developed the curriculum, so we’re just waiting to launch when the opportunity presents itself.” The Canby Center is located at 681 Southwest 2nd Avenue in Canby. For more information about services through The Canby Center or how you can volunteer or support their work, call 503-266-2920, email info@thecanbycenter. org, or visit www.thecanbycenter.org.

SEASONAL
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Zootopia
Easter Parade
(2016) - PG
(1948) - G
Not an Easter movie, but it’s about a rabbit, so close enough. From elephants to mice, the metropolis of Zootopia is a melting pot where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first bunny on the Zootopia Police, she realizes how hard it is to bring order to a city of such chaos, especially when you feel so small. Determined to prove herself, Judy leaps at the chance to solve a mysterious case. She’s forced to work with a wily and sneaky fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who makes her job impossible. But eventually the two discover, as a small bunny who was once bullied, and a fox who was treated as a thief before he even knew the word, they have more in common than they think!
Here Comes Peter Cottontail
(1971) - TV-G
This 1971 stop motion animated TV special was produced by Rankin/Bass Productions and was based on the 1957 novel The Easter Bunny That Overslept. In this fun and lighthearted flick, Peter Cottontail is a young Easter Bunny who lives in April Valley where all the other Easter bunnies live and work, making Easter candy, sewing bonnets, and decorating and delivering Easter eggs. Colonel Wellington B. Bunny is retiring as Chief Easter Bunny, and Peter and an evil bunny named January Q. Irontail are both vying for the job. But Irontail, voiced by Vincent Price!, of course wants to ruin Easter! 28 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE 28 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
An Oscarwinning smash musical from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Easter Parade stars Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in this perfect film of nostalgia and escapism. When released it grossed six million dollars, and although six million sounds petty these days, the average movie ticket was 37 cents in 1948! When a Broadway star and a chorus girl fall in love, it culminates with a proposal that happens during the Easter Parade. After his first dance partner leaves, Don (Astaire) chooses a young and naive chorus girl, Hannah (Garland) as his protege. But it turns out she’s incredibly klutzy and confuses her left from her right. Funny, cute, and magically musical, Easter Parade holds up at 74 years old!
Willy Wonka (1971) - G
Probably Gene Wilder’s best movie, and not an Easter movie, but the definitive movie about candy! Willy Wonka, after years of seclusion, hides a handful of golden tickets in random chocolate bars around the world, and if found, children will be given a tour of the famed chocolate factory. Of course, Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe are the only good people in a crowd of selfish brats and classless parents, as the group gets smaller by one after each tour stop and its ensuing lesson and misadventure. Weird, fun, and pure classic cinema.

Thank You to Canby Rotary’s “Magical Evening” Sponsors
T
he first Canby Rotary Daddy Daughter Dance was an evening of fun for young “princesses” whose faces showed big smiles and whose heads were topped with crowns and floral headbands. They enjoyed an evening with their Daddies including a magic show, face-painting, balloon animals, special photographs, and chocolate-covered marshmallows; but the dance floor ringed in lights was the star of the evening for the 300 guests at Ackerman Center in Canby. Every loving, attentive father was rewarded with the smile on his daughter’s face. Much of the success of the dance was because of the generous sponsors. We thank each of them for their special gifts. One young guest was asked, “What is your favorite part of the evening?” She quickly replied, “Everything, but mostly being here with my daddy.”

In honor of their service
ARBIE IRWIN “I WANTED TO DO MY PART”
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer When Arbie Irwin first set foot on the U.S.S. Pensacola, a top-of-theline heavy cruiser, to begin his service in the United States Navy, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. But looking back, there’s not much that he would change. He joined in July 1945, in the waning days of World War II. He and a friend from Hubbard High School, both 17, decided to drop out and enlist together. “We had been talking about it between junior and senior year,” Irwin recalled. With a chuckle, he added, “We both signed up together, and they split us up right away. I never saw him again.” After Germany’s surrender two months earlier, the war had ended in Europe and was wrapping up elsewhere. Irwin wasn’t sure where his service would take him, but he was eager to see the world. “The war had been going on for years and it was horrible,” he recalled. “I was a young guy, and I wanted to do my part. I wanted to go in and see if I could save the world.” He was told to report to San Diego for basic training, which proved to be an immediate problem. “They didn’t ship us down, and I didn’t have a car,” he said. “I had to hitchhike.” On the U.S.S. Pensacola, which Japanese soldiers had respectfully and fearfully nicknamed the “Gray Ghost,” Irwin was assigned to the boiler room and played a crucial role in keeping the ship full steam ahead — especially given the fact that two of the crew’s three boilermen were prone to seasickness — and he was not. “I never got sick,” he said proudly.
The U.S.S. Pensacola was stationed about 10 miles from the drop site when Able was detonated on July 1, 1946. But days later, Irwin and a few of his shipmates were sent to ground zero to assess the damage and report back. “They said they wanted some of the young ones to go in there and see the damage,” he said. “This was before my 19th birthday. They wanted us to tell them what we say: ‘This was burned, this was charred, this was where we saw some extreme pressure.’” He saw a lot, including his old locker, where he had accidentally left a few bottles of Coca-Cola. The locker had been torn from the wall and deposited on the other side of the room, but miraculously, one bottle survived. Irwin still has it to this day. “I don’t think it was radioactive because I’ve had it ever since I got out [of the military],” he said. Sadly, Irwin and his other crew mates wore only their regular clothing during these outings — no special protective gear to protect them from the radiation. At the time, it was thought that the radiation would affect only exterior surfaces, so the men simply disposed of their clothing and were hosed down upon coming back to the ship. “If I had known what I was signing up for, I probably still would have done it,” he said. “But knowing what I know now, I might have hesitated a little more and asked for some protective gear.”
In 1946, he and his crewmates would become part of history as they took part in the military’s Operation Crossroads, a series of nuclear tests that were conducted on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The operation consisted of two detonations, Able, which was dropped from an aircraft 520 feet above the target fleet, and Baker, which was detonated underwater.
Irwin identifies as an atomic veteran, a class of primarily WWIIera veterans who were exposed to ionizing radiation from a nuclear explosion during their active duty. Mostly, these are veterans who were part of the military occupation forces in and around Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan during the end of the war, or who, like Irwin, participated in an above-ground nuclear test between 1945 and 1962.
Irwin watched them both. “I saw both of the blasts, and they were just incredible,” he recalled. “You wonder how something could be made to be that powerful. I could see that cloud starting to mushroom, and it just kept getting bigger and bigger. I didn’t think it was ever going to stop. You couldn’t believe the colors that were there. It made me feel like this was something unreal, you know.”
He’s a longtime member of the local chapter of the National Association of Atomic Veterans, and said he often thinks back to his firsthand experiences of the aftermath of a nuclear weapon.

“Back in those days, I remember thinking to myself, ‘Boy, I hope this is never used again,’” he said. “Because it can just ruin the world. It hit me then and it still does today. I hope our leaders never let it come to that.”

O
LEGAL MATTERS
REIF & HUNSAKER, P.C.
Should I Form a Company? The two most common types of small business entities are the S-Corp and the limited liability company (LLC). An S-Corp is just a “regular” corporation (sometimes called a “C-Corp”) that requests “pass through taxation” under Subchapter S of the internal revenue code. LLCs generally have “pass through taxation” as well. “Pass through taxation” eliminates “double taxation” – that is, taxation at the entity level and at the personal level. It allows the income from the entity to be reported on the owners’ personal tax returns. There are additional benefits to forming these entities, including the ability to protect your other assets (i.e., limited liability), the ability to deduct expenses not permitted to be deducted by an individual, and a more formal relationship between and among the owners. If managed properly, an S-Corp or LLC will limit the liability of its owners to the investment that the owner has made in the company. That is, if there is a significant liability, the company is required to pay the judgment, not the owners. Formation For example, if you owned Internal Rules membership interest in Relationship Between XYZ, LLC and the company Owners had a judgment against it Owners so large that the company Who can own is forced to go bankrupt, Management you, as a member, are not personally responsible to Tax ID Number pay the judgment. Please note that this benefit does not protect the owners from responsibility for their personal negligence. If you caused the injury, you can be held responsible for it.
46 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
The tax treatment of S-Corps and LLCs allow significant deductions or benefits not permitted by individuals. These benefits include the deduction of health insurance expenses, provision of retirements plans (e.g., 401k and profit sharing plans), and a significant difference in the withholding for wages v. dividends. It is important that the owners consult with their CPA on these matters. Owners can sometimes have disagreements. Do you as an owner have the right to look at the company’s financial records, contracts, minutes, resolutions, etc.? Generally, the answer is “yes,” but what if the other owner won’t let you? One of the benefits of owning an entity is that there are formal rules governing disputes among the owners and the rights of owners. While both types of entities have similarities and share similar benefits, they are not identical. Some of the important differences are:
S-Corp Articles of Incorporation Bylaws Shareholder Agreement or Buy-Sell Agreement Shareholders Limited number/citizenship Board of Directors and Officers EIN
LLC Articles of Organization Operating Agreement Included in the Operating Agreement Members Essentially unlimited Managers EIN

For All Your Flag, Flagpole, Banner & Kite Needs!
Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners. “The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’”
Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks. Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls. Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s. Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes
its own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross. “We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom quality flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a championship and wants to hoist a banner to their gymnasium ceiling.”
Elmer’s also manufactures, sells, installs and services custom poles, including two of the tallest in the state of Oregon, measuring 120 feet. “They’re monsters,” Anchel says with a laugh. Elmer’s selection of kites, flags, banners, weather vanes, wind spinners and other wind toys will amaze you. Looking to spruce up your home’s exterior? Stop into the retail store at 1332 NE Broadway in Portland, Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Or visit their website, elmersflag.com anytime.

SPREADING THE JOY OF MUSIC
Mae Day
Ell grew up playing music, starting on the piano at age 6 and guitar at 11. By 14, she was singing and writing original music for a Portland country/folk band and playing festivals throughout the metro area.
By Tyler Franke, Contributing Writer
C anby Music ,
your local source for instrument sales, rentals, supplies, and lessons, is proud to welcome its newest team members and instructors: Christian Engerman and Lana Szenasis. Like many a hapless parent, local mom Megan Ell faced the unique challenges of raising teenagers — until she came up with a unique solution: Start a band. She started playing with two of her daughters, Kaylee, age 14, and Allee, 13, along with longtime family friend Heather Moore, and the family has never been closer. The band, named “Mae Day” after another one of Ell’s daughters, is quickly becoming a fixture on the coffee house, farmers market and winery circuit, performing several gigs a month. “It’s a great thing to do with the family,” she says. “It gets them off the video games, and it really helps with bonding with the girls.”
Then, as they say, life happened. She went to college, started a family, and eventually earned a Master’s in Teaching. As her girls got older, Ell says, she found herself wanting to reconnect with music, and a few years ago made her way to the Canby Music store to shake off the rust. Ell has taken several series of lessons from the Canby Music crew, including lead guitar from owner Brian Haines, and Kaylee and Allee are learning drums and vocals, respectively — the two roles they play in the band. “These guys are like a family to us,” she says of Canby Music. “It’s so comfortable here, I feel like we could just come and hang out. They’re helpful and resourceful and super friendly.” Canby Music is located at 590 NW 1st Avenue in Canby. For more information, call 503-263-2263 or visit canbymusic. com. For more information about Mae Day, including upcoming gigs, visit the band’s Facebook page.

PREPAREATHON!
NATIONAL
Prepareathon! DAY
APRIL 30TH
Prepareathon! Day reminds us that crises happen suddenly. Being prepared needs to happen now, not later. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or wildfires require us to make decisions with little or no warning. Do you have an emergency plan in place with your family in the even of an emergency situation? PrepareAthon! Day offers tools and resources for communities and citizens that help them to prepare in the event of a disaster. Large or small, it takes members of the community getting involved to help keep a crisis from turning into a tragedy. While our emergency resources supply one arm of the response team, many others step forward. Some help with a supply chain while others coordinate medical personnel. Communication is also vital to a successful plan. When everyone has a blueprint, our plans run more smoothly. Take part in your community’s preparedness plans. MAIN STREET MERCANTILE
MAIN STREET MERCANTILE IN AURORA
Jam-Packed With Treasure! By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
A
fter 40 years in the legal profession, Connie LaFarge was looking for a change. When the opportunity to purchase Main Street Mercantile from its longtime proprietor presented itself in January 2021, she jumped on it — and has never once regretted it. “It’s been a lot of fun,” she says, adding with a laugh, “It’s been educational. It has been challenging at times, but I love the variety and the different interesting items that we see.” LaFarge loves to know the stories of each item wherever possible. With three floors and 15,000 square feet of showroom space — that’s a lot of stories.
She just laughs when asked how many items the store offers. “More than I can count,” she says. “Thousands and thousands. Tens of thousands. We’d be here all day if I tried to walk through all of them with you. But it’s 15,000 square feet, jam-packed full of treasure.” Main Street Mercantile hosts over 50 vendors, each specializing in their own unique tastes, eras, regions, styles, and types of merchandise. “They tend to specialize,” she says. “Some of them are very general; some of them have specific things they display and sell. But you can feel a different vibe from each individual dealer. Their personality shines through, which is something I really love.”
“That’s one thing we’re working really hard on is to make the outside as enticing as the inside,” she says. “It’s really fun to find things in the shop and put them out there to pique people’s interests as they pass by.” Aurora is known far and wide as an antique lovers’ paradise, and Main Street Mercantile is often at the top of visitors’ lists. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that we get visitors from everywhere: England, Canada, many states,” she says. “I absolutely adore Aurora and have always felt a pull here, and just want the greater areas to know about not only my shop, but the colony. It’s definitely a destination worth visiting, and our shop is kind of the epicenter. We lovingly refer to it as the crown jewel of the colony.” LaFarge is proud of the store and the progress she has made in a little over 12 months. “I just started not knowing very much, and I’m very proud of what I’ve created here,” she says. “I have people tell me, ‘I just love your store,’ and it literally gives me goosebumps every time. I really feel like I’m meant to be here. This is where I’m supposed to be.” Main Street Mercantile is located at 21610 Main Street NE in downtown Aurora. The store is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday until Memorial Day. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 503-678-1044, email mainstreetmercantile@outlook.com or visit the Main Street Mercantile’s pages on Facebook and Instagram.
LaFarge, who dealt in antiques as a side hobby before embarking on her new career, has been working hard to build upon Main Street Mercantile’s strong and established reputation, style and MAIN STREET MERCANTILE brand. She puts particular emphasis on the displays — inside and out.

Did You Know . . . WE LEARN SO MUCH FROM OUR CUSTOMERS! We love the unique and unusual and are alWays searching for cool things for the shop. so, as you look around, you’ll find a handful of items that are called a doo-dad or a thing-a-ma-jig. That’s because we couldn’t figure out what they were. Sometimes we never find out and it gets sold as an unknown object to a lovely customer who’s just as intrigued as we are.
Such was the case with the hollow brass holder thing (pictured below) that was about 12” across. We still don’t know what it was. Do you? Fortunately, our customers are happy to share what they know and we love learning new things. The latest was a set of plates with divided sections (picture to the right). But not like the plates that are cafeteria-ware – these were shaped in a sun ray pattern. Turns out that they’re meant for fondue – though I think they’d be great for sushi, too. Come on by and you can help identify our most recent unknown object! WE’RE OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK:

hether you decide to sell or stay now with the changes in the market, these interior, affordable changes are still hot and make for a great first impression or reinvigorates your home if you are feeling a bit blah!
Interior Paint
One of the least expensive tasks you can do to breathe some new life into an otherwise bland room...paint! Colors that are currently hot are whites and greens. Tired of your outdated cabinets but can’t afford new? Painting your cabinets is a great option! A higher level of skill is sometimes needed for this so be sure to do your research online or reach out to a professional painter for a consultation.
Interior Hardware
This is another great cost effective option to bring your home into the 21st century. Things such as knobs on cabinets, door knobs and hinges and/or plumbing fixtures can really make or break a home, often making it look outdated. It is amazing how a small change such as knobs on kitchen cabinets can make a cabinet look more appealing. Brass is still a top pick for cabinet door hardware!
Tile
It is super easy, with all the great products available, to change out the back splash in a kitchen or bathroom! Utilizing new tile designs can make the whole kitchen or bath feel updated!
Light Fixtures
Changing the lighting can make a significant difference as well and is pretty simple. Even if you hire an electrician, if you have all the material ready, an hourly charge times a couple hours will get the job done! Consider changing the fixtures in the bathrooms and on the ceilings. There are new “ceiling hugger” light styles that sit very tight against the ceiling and allow the visual sense of more height in a room. Again, Brass is a hot color right now in traditional and contemporary styles. If this is more than you want to bite off, purchase LED replacement light bulbs and replace all the light bulbs in the house so they match and the light color is consistent and crisp throughout! Hello Canby!
I am thrilled to begin my new role Laurie Tarter, Canby Area Chamber CEO and introduce myself to you all! For nearly 25 years, I spent my career in a dual role of nonprofit management and consulting with business and industry. My background includes more than 19 years of senior-level leadership with a nationally recognized and award-winning Michigan-based nonprofit where I served as the Co-Creator and Vice-President. I have proudly served as the Program and Communications Manager with the Wilsonville Area Chamber of Commerce, and operated my own small business consulting firm in recent years. I am a pro-business advocate and am passionate about workforce and economic development, strategic partnerships, special events, membership, and inclusive strategies. I understand the importance of strong relationships and collaboration with elected officials, business leaders, and members. I believe that Chambers should take risks, embrace change, and be bold in serving their communities. On a personal note, and most importantly, I am married to my college sweetheart and have two amazing adult children – both of whom live in Portland. My son and his wife are graduates of the University of Oregon School of Law. My daughter is a self-employed website designer, and my son-in-law is a manager of a very popular Portland restaurant; and they are expecting our first grandchild! Please attend an event, read our newsletters, volunteer on a committee, or connect with our Chamber team. I look forward to working together to strategically position the Chamber as a convener of thoughtful leadership, a vehicle for engagement, and a leader in business advocacy within the region. Smiling,
Laurie Tarter Your New Chamber CEO

CUTSFORTH’S OF CANBY
Cutsforth’s Produce Dept.
True To Their Roots By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto Photography
CUTSFORTH’S MARKET and the Cutsforth family have been in
business in Canby for almost a century, having started serving the community in 1928. Life in general, and the food business specifically, looked quite a bit different back in those days, but if you’re curious, you can get a taste of the past by just stepping foot in the Cutsforth’s produce department.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: PATRICK, JOSE, BURK, JEROME, CRUZ AND GRACE.
Bearing some of the aesthetics of a farmer’s market or a roadside produce stand, with crates, bins and shelves piled high with the freshest fruits and vegetables around, the space has the flavor of a simpler time, when quality was all-important — and virtually everything being offered for sale had come from a farm just up the road. “We try and deal with the local farmers as much as possible,” explains Jose G. Ayala, who has served as Cutsforth’s produce manager for four years. “We try to support local farmers and try to keep it local. We love to do that because it keeps the money here locally; we help the farmers and they help us. And it makes it so we provide a fresher product for our customers, and that’s the main thing. The customers are always our No. 1 priority.” One of the most beloved fixtures in the produce department, of course, is the antique tractor, lovingly restored and painted carrot-orange. Look and enjoy — but please don’t try to sit on it.
If you do need a special item or variety you don’t see on the floor, just ask, Ayala says. They often get special requests from customers and can typically bring it in within a day or two.
“People love the tractor,” Ayala says with a laugh. “That’s part of our style. We’re kind of set up like an old-fashioned fruit market. We’re old school, and we’re proud of that. We try to stay true to our roots.”
Another old-school touch is the ol’ “try before you buy” policy.
Other things that make Cutsforth’s unique from some other stores are their dedicated cut fruit specialist, who slices and dices pineapple, watermelon, apples, and countless other fruits fresh daily for customers. The store also squeezes and bottles their own fresh orange and grapefruit juice on site. Ayala’s first task when he steps onto the floor each morning is to tend to the department’s shelves and ensure the produce is perfectly stocked, faced, and ready for Cutsforth’s shopping carts and baskets. “We get new shipments every day, seven days a week,” he explains. “Everything comes from the trucks and right onto the shelves. SEQUOIA TREE SERVICE
STANDING TALL By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
W
hile the phrase “up a tree” might indicate, for most folks, that they are in a difficult situation, for Daniel Miramon it’s just another day in the life.
Owner of Sequoia Tree Service, Daniel feels at home whether his feet are on the ground or dangling over a hundred feet in the air. “There are definitely times when we have to climb up really high,” he says. “The highest is probably 110, 120 feet. It’s pretty amazing. You get a lot of views you wouldn’t see from outside your window. You can see the whole valley and stuff like that. We’re definitely not afraid of heights.” With 16 years of experience, there’s not much in the arboreal realm that frightens Daniel or his crew, and not much they haven’t seen. That includes the devastating ice storm of February 2021, which wrought historic damage throughout the Willamette Valley that is still being cleaned up to this day. “It was bad, but part of my background is actually doing hurricane work in Florida and Puerto Rico,” he explains. “I’ve seen some really bad storms.” While roads, power lines, and other urgent needs from the storm have long since been addressed, Daniel said that a lot of tree damage remains, most of it on private property. Dead or damaged trees, broken or dangling limbs should be looked at and addressed by an experienced arborist, Daniel recommends, to help prevent potential safety issues or property damage for the homeowner. “We’re a company that has a lot of experience with hazardous trees,” he explains. “It’s not just trees damaged by storms, either. It could be disease, beetle infestation, anything. Look

for bark peeling off and other signs of disease, rot, root exposure or leaning. If you see anything that concerns you, give us a call for a free consultation.” Some particular species to watch for in the Pacific Northwest include fir trees, which Daniel says are the No. 1 cause of tree limbs going into homes; pine trees, which can be notoriously brittle at the top; and cedar trees, which can be prone to uprooting. Sequoia Tree Service offers a variety of services depending on the customer’s needs, including trimming, shaping, and tree removal. Daniel is particularly adept with trimming trees and branches around utility lines, and has 10 years of experience in power line clearance. Sequoia Tree Service is a family-owned and operated company that has been gaining a reputation for its quality work and customer service. “We’ve seen a lot of customers and have been getting a lot of respect because of the trees we’ve had to deal with since last year,” Daniel says. “We’re as busy as any other company that has 10 to 20 years in business.” Sequoia Tree Service is based in Molalla but serves customers throughout the region. Canby Rotary Responds to Community Challenges Canby Rotary’s First Daddy-Daughter Dance “I had so much fun, Daddy, can we do it again”? “My daughter said this was the most fun she has ever had with me.” “Thank you for providing a special evening for us.” The Rotary Club of Canby and its members hosted its first DaddyDaughter Dance on March 12 at Ackerman Center. The theme of the special event was “A Magical Evening”. About 300 daddies and daughters attended and danced to waltzes, rock and roll, hokey-pokey, limbo, and a line dance after entering through a balloon arch and under enchanted lights. A popular activity was dipping marshmallows, strawberries, and shortbread cookies in a chocolate fountain with many smiles and laughter by both daughters and daddies. Most girls selected a special design for a face painting and a special animal made by a balloon artist just for them. Daddies and daughters were able to have their picture taken to commemorate the evening by a professional photographer. A special program of illusions performed by Scott Anderson highlighted the evening about the time everyone needed a break from dancing. Family relationships have been tested by the past two years, and this event focused on strengthening the bond between parent and
child. The more than 60 members of Canby Rotary are delighted to host this event for the first time and look forward to hosting it in March 2023.

insecure or economically challenged students who qualify as unhoused. Most of these students have limited access to healthy food on weekend because of financial challenges of their family or lack of consistent food storage and preparation space. Some are estranged from family members.
Rotarians work in their community, the nation, and around the world. Rotary Clubs in northwestern Oregon joined together to address the need for transportation to places of refuge, temporary shelter, food, medical care, and medical supplies for Ukrainians refugees. 38 Rotary Clubs, in 964 individual bags of easy to prepare including the Rotary Club of Canby, donated nearly $150,000 for this food was packed and delivered by response. SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
Rotarians work for local peace.
Last fall The Rotary Club of Canby hosted a firstof-its-kind Canby Community Summit - gathered about 75 key Canby leaders for the purpose of strengthening peaceful and productive relationships. From local businesses, government, clubs, companies, organizations, and churches, participants took this first step of many to engage in generating peace. Since then, we have been invited to share the event’s peacemaking message three times. In March alone we contributed to a panel discussion for peace hosted by George Fox University and Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) conducted an interview for their “Think Out Loud” radio program. People are very interested in a pathway to peace. Rotarians are out in front, helping others find the way. Rotarians have fun, hosting the Daddy Daughter Dance on Saturday March 12th with 301 ticket holders joining us for a magical evening at Ackerman Center. After selling out for this first-time event, we were still able to accommodate all 17 ticket sales at the door. As you can imagine, many of the young girls didn’t want the night to end! Their enthusiasm reminds us that community events like these are so important. Perhaps now more than ever we need to smile and laugh together, building relationships in community.
Rotarians respond with relief for Ukraine, by giving over $4,300 in Canby towards a district fund totaling over $150,000. Rotarians accelerate education, having raised over $30,000 for local youth scholarships to be disbursed this spring. Rotarians engage their community and world.
Be a Rotarian.

GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS Written By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
T
ransform that embarrassing, worn out, and outdated kitchen or bathroom into the beautiful, new, luxurious space you’ve always wanted, and with minimal demolition! Home renovations are never enjoyable. As a rule, they tend to be messy, costly, and incredibly disruptive, often spanning weeks if not months. That’s not the case, however, when you hire Granite Transformations! Their unique concept addresses these issues by preserving and utilizing the majority of your existing functional assets, and in essence, performing more of a “facelift” than a complete remodel. That equates to less mess, lower costs (40% less on average than a full remodel), and far less of a disruption to your daily life. And the results are astounding! Granite Transformations is a worldwide franchiser with some 240 franchises around the globe. They have been perfecting their methods of operation for over 20 years. Local franchisee owner Dan Lappin purchased his location, which services Oregon and southwest Washington, 6 years ago. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision to invest and expand, he has relocated to a brand new and highly impressive showroom in Lake Oswego which will be celebrating its Grand Opening this Spring! It was Granite Transformations’ unique process that attracted Dan to the business. Most kitchens and bathrooms are functionally sound, but over the years have just become outdated. As a result,

simply “transforming” them versus demolishing and starting from scratch makes perfect sense. Granite Transformations’ proprietary makeover methods are highly efficient, and by using recycled materials whenever possible they’re also environmentally friendly. Countertops, cabinets, sinks, backsplashes; they do it all, and everything is engineered in the US and fabricated locally. They do these “makeovers” provided there are no structural changes needed to the building itself. They refresh, customize, and reconfigure cabinetry, countertops, and entire kitchens and bathrooms within your existing walls without extensive demolition. Dan explained, they are make-up artists, not plastic surgeons! If you are interested in remodeling your kitchen or bath, call Granite Transformations first! Let them schedule a free design session to show you the amazing transformations they can provide. Their products are top-notch, require little-to-no maintenance, and come with a lifetime, transferable warranty. Why would you even need to consider anyone else? anby welcomes Dick’s Auto Group to the community! And Canby’s new Ford dealership owners, and staff, are excited to be here. A local, privately owned company, Dick’s Canby Ford is focused on fulfilling an active role within the community. They have come as neighbors and friends in support of a community they believe in. Shaun Weber, Vice President and General Manager of Dick’s Canby Ford, relates the positive aspects of setting up shop in Canby. For one, Shaun says, “we really like and identify the community of Canby as a place that we want to do business.” Canby Ford may have changed ownership, but as members of the community, “we are going to treat everybody as if they are family, and do the best we can to serve them.” Canby’s location—just outside the major metropolitan area, yet still close enough to be in the mainstream market—allows Dick’s Canby Ford to “operate a great business with the people we enjoy doing business with,” explains Shaun.
Dick’s Auto Group, founded by Richard “Dick” Inukai in 1985, is the largest family owned and operated auto group in the western Portland area. After Richard passed in 2011, his son and daughter, Scott Inukai and Shannon Inukai-Cuffee, took over the ownership of Dick’s Auto Group which had been a successful Hillsboro company with close ties to the community. In honor of their father, Scott and Shannon, along with their sister, Stacie InukaiCenter, established the Inukai Family Foundation. The Foundation fosters youth development and has contributed heavily to the Hillsboro Boys and Girls Club (which now bears the Inukai name). It also offers educational grants and scholarships to teachers and students, supports healthcare for seniors, and promotes Japanese culture within the Japanese-American community. Members of the Canby community can count on Dick’s Canby Ford’s participation in local events, charities, and fundraisers. Drop in for a visit and get to know your new neighbors— a 7-time winner of The Ford President’s Award which recognizes Dealers achieving the highest levels of customer satisfaction. With plans for local growth, Dick’s Canby Ford is looking to hire talented individuals from within the community who will go the extra mile. “Our customers expect value, service, and dependability. We are here to exceed your expectations.” So, when you’re ready for your next car or truck, stop by Dick’s Canby Ford where you’ll find “A Vehicle for Every Lifestyle.” Dick’s Canby Ford is located at 24315 S. MEET THE ATHLETE
PROUDLY SPONSORED BY ROTH HEATING & COOLING
ALEX EVANS By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
It’s a moment that’s already become legendary. It was Pack the Gym Night—a beloved local basketball tradition that returned this year after a long hiatus due to COVID-19— and the Canby Cougars were facing their vaunted league rivals from Lake Oswego. After a back-and-forth game in front of a large and enthusiastic home crowd, things took a turn for the worse for the Cougs. Trailing by two with less than 10 seconds left, shooting guard Kellan Oakes drove past the defense and put up an eight-foot shot that missed—bouncing wide and into the hands of Lake Oswego. Canby fouled and the Lakers sank both free throws to make it a two-possession game. Lake Oswego led 61-57 with just seven seconds left. In basketball, seven seconds is generally not enough time to score even once—let alone twice. But on Pack the Gym Night, anything can happen. Canby head coach Craig Evans did what he had been doing all season—and put the ball in the hands of his star point guard Alex Evans (no relation). At 6’4” and a strong 185 pounds—imposing for a high school point guard—Evans had confounded opposing defenses all season with his size, speed, ball handling, passing, and sweet touch from beyond the arc. Sometimes, he would go off for a big scoring night, pouring in 25 points or more to lead the Cougars to victory. Other nights, especially if his teammates were hitting, he was the consummate floor general, running the offense and stuffing the stat sheet with assists, rebounds, and steals. But he was always the unquestioned team leader, and if the Cougars were going to pull off the miracle, everyone in the gym knew that it would be thanks to Alex Evans.
After a Canby timeout, with the crowd on its feet and the Canby High School gym seeming to shake and pulse, Evans raced down the court and fired a jittery 3 that touched every inch of the rim before falling. Just like that, Canby was down by just one point, 60-61. But the Lakers had the ball, and time was quickly running out. The Cougars intentionally fouled to get possession back, which looked promising after the Lakers missed the free throw. Canby rebounded and called a timeout. The only problem? They were still behind, and a mere 1.3 seconds remained on the clock. Again, the ball found its way to Evans, who dashed to halfcourt and threw up a desperate heave. The shot never had a real chance of going in, but incredibly, Evans managed to draw a foul, earning three crucial free throws and a chance for the most unlikely victory. “I had confidence going up there,” Evans said. But when his first attempt rattled out, even he needed a moment to collect himself. “I wanted the crowd to feel the suspense,” he later joked. The tension was as thick as February fog, every Cougar fan in attendance seemed to hold their breath, as Evans cooly stepped back to the charity stripe and nailed the next two shots in quick succession. Evans had scored five points in just four seconds to seal the improbable comeback. The 2022 season—Evans’ last in a Cougar uniform—was full of such memorable moments. After a promising 2019-20 season that was derailed by injuries, and a 2021 campaign that was shortened due to COVID-19 and played largely without fans, Evans and his 10 senior teammates were determined to make the most of this year. “We really didn’t have a lot of expectations coming into the season,” he said. “We were just hoping for a full season with playoffs. And that’s what we got, so we were thankful.” The Cougar basketball team, notably the seniors, were particularly close-knit this year, especially considering that two of them, Payton Meyers and Tanner Van Meter, had transferred from other programs.
84 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
“We’ve all been in the program since we were in the fifth grade,” Evans said of the core of the team. “We are an interesting group of seniors, that’s for sure. We’re always just having fun, no matter what the situation is. Like, even after we lost to Lincoln [in the state playoffs], everyone was down, but we all knew that we were brothers and we knew the next day at school was just a new day.” While the energetic Meyers was undoubtedly the team’s biggest talker, and senior center Jacob Strand the biggest practical joker, according to Evans, he said he prefers to lead quietly and by example. “I’m more of the quiet type,” he said. “If you make a mistake, I’m not going to critique you too much. I leave that to the coaches. I’m more about wanting to make sure you’re having fun playing basketball.”
The youngest of six siblings, four of whom went on to play college basketball (the fifth was a college volleyball player), Evans has grown up immersed in hoops. “Pretty much ever since I got out of the womb, I’ve had a basketball in my hands,” he said with a laugh. “My brothers and sisters taught me a lot, for sure. Almost everything I know is from my siblings and my parents. But I’m always either playing basketball or watching basketball, and that’s what gets me to the level that I’m at.” Evans hopes to continue his athletic career at the next level, but hasn’t settled on a college or program yet. At the moment, his focus is on the baseball season, where he pitches, plays infield, and no doubt does whatever is needed to help the team win.

Spring
Gardening Tips By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Get to Know Your Garden
Is it south-facing or north-facing? Knowing where the sun hits the ground will help you decide what to grow where. It’s also worth knowing what soil type you have. Take a look at what’s growing. Doing a soil test will also help you know your soil, and therefore what plants you can grow.
Plan Your Garden
Plan what to grow where, rather than getting carried away at the garden center and ending up with too many random plants that neither look good together nor suit your growing conditions. Planning also enables you to use color and structure wisely, which will help you create a garden that looks great throughout the year.
Learn How to Plant
Proper planting will ensure good growth and longevity. Make sure you weed and prepare the soil before planting, and add mulch or fertilizer where necessary. If you’re unsure how to plant something, look online for instructions or check the nursery tag.
Feed and Water Regularly
Proper watering is the difference between life and death. As a general rule, water the root ball rather than the leaves, as the roots absorb the water. Soaking the root ball every week is better than watering a little bit every day. Feeding is also important. Generally you should feed every two weeks during spring and summer, and feed more if growing in containers.

Watch Out for Pests
Most garden pests don’t do much harm and can be left alone, as there are plenty of natural predators that will keep them in check. However, sometimes pests can become an infestation and you need to act. Keeping an eye out for pests in excess like aphids, slugs and snails will help keep your plants safe and save you a lot of heartache.
Make Your Own Compost
Composting kitchen and garden waste is good for the environment, wildlife, your wallet, and also your garden. Let the waste break down (usually for months) and then use it when planting or as a mulch around the base of plants in your garden and veg patch. There are also many ways to compost, so look online for ideas that work for you.
Be Kind to Wildlife
You may see wildlife as the enemy to gardening. But wildlife can be useful in the garden, too. Birds eat a variety of garden pests like slugs and snails, aphids and caterpillars. Bees pollinate our food crops. Creating habitats for them and learning to share your garden with them is the key to enjoying your space. info from gardenersworld.com

ARTS & CULTURE
A Voice Like No Other Dr. Sarah Maines By David Bates, Contributing Writer
Y
ou probably haven’t thought of musicians this way, but singers are athletes, and like other athletes pushing their bodies to the limit, they can get injured - and that’s where Dr. Sarah Maines can help. Sarah is a Portland area musician and teacher who, in addition to basic voice training, offers artistic and habilitative voice instruction. “We keep singers in top vocal shape for their chosen genre and help rebalance and strengthen the voice after an injury or strain,” she said. “I’ve had multiple students who came to me with issues severe enough to require surgery on their vocal folds who now maintain successful singing careers.” Sarah grew up on a cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon, where she spent a lot of time on horseback or helping out in her mother’s huge garden. Music was “ever-present” in the family. National Public Radio’s Performance Today was always playing, and her mom played the flute. “My first understanding of harmony came from singing hymns in the front pew, hearing my brother and dad sing bass, my mom and sisters sing alto and sometimes tenor while I sang soprano,” said Sarah. The family would sing on road trips, and after long days of working on the ranch, her “Dad would sing to keep our spirits up.” Sarah joined the Treasure Valley Children’s Chorus in Ontario when she was ten and also played trumpet in jazz and pep bands in middle and high school. She studied music at Berea College in Kentucky where she fell in love with pedagogy (teaching) as a senior. Then, another epiphany. “Just after graduating, I experienced some vocal health issues due to

laryngopharyngeal reflux,” she said. Working with a professional voice specialist in Ohio, Sarah became “completely smitten with the world of voice care.” “It was immediately obvious to me that this is my purpose,” she said. “I’ve been teaching ever since.” She earned her doctorate at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, and even before she moved to Portland about 15 years ago, Sarah had already instructed hundreds of students. Along with teaching in her private studio, Sarah currently accepts referrals from the OHSU Voice Clinic, works with laryngologist Dr. James Thomas of voicedoctor.net in Portland, and teaches at the University of Portland. Her students regularly win awards, scholarships, and are cast in leading roles in musicals and perform professionally around the world. Today, new students can reach out to Sarah through her website, themainestudio. musicteachershelper.com. The process begins with an email conversation about the student’s history, experience and goals. If the fit seems right, an initial lesson is scheduled so Sarah can assess the student’s voice and they can talk more about goals. When not teaching voice instruction, she’s also an active union member of the Portland Opera Chorus and performs regularly with the Resonance Ensemble, Fear No Music, and is active in the Portland area musical theater scene.

CANBY HISTORY
WILLIAM BARLOW HOUSE By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
T
here are countless names and families who stand out in the annals of local history, and who helped found Canby and built it into the community it has become over the past nearly 200 years. Philander and Anna Lee, whose donation land claim would become the heart of downtown Canby, have obviously earned their place. “Big Jim” Baker, the wild frontiersman who operated a huge ranch in what is now north Canby in the 1830s — and nearly had the honor of having the town named after him — makes for a colorful tale. Kentuckian Champney Pendleton and family were among the earliest known permanent settlers in the Canby area and would make their mark on the town for decades to come. But perhaps no single person was more instrumental in those very early days than another Kentuckian, Samuel K. Barlow. After all, he built the Barlow Road — the final overland segment of the Oregon Trail — without which, the so-called “A-B-C” sister cities of Aurora, Barlow and Canby may not have developed until decades later, if at all.

Samuel Kimbrough Barlow was a trailblazer in every sense of the word, a tailor by trade and training who lived a colorful life. In August 1827, he was convicted of manslaughter for killing a man with an ax the previous October. Sentenced to one year of hard labor, his crime was eventually pardoned by the governor of Indiana after scores of people — including the victim’s brother — pleaded on his behalf since he had acted only to protect his wife, Susannah Lee, and their six children: Sarah, James, John, Eliza Jane, Eli, and William. In 1845, Barlow and his family joined legendary pioneer and statesman Joel Palmer, who would later serve as an Oregon legislator and speaker of the House, in his train of 23 covered wagons bound for Oregon.

Along the way, the 53-year-old made one of the earliest ascents of Mount Hood (though he did not reach the summit), as he and Palmer were scouting for a crossing. On October 7, 1845, Barlow climbed all the way to the 9,000-foot level in order to clear the treeline and find a way off the mountain. The path they ultimately chose would later be known as Barlow Pass. Nine years later, Barlow, along with five other men led by Thomas J. Dryer, made another attempted ascent
of Oregon’s tallest peak which some consider the first summitting of Mount Hood, though the report has been disputed. A later climb by a party led by Henry Pittock in 1857 was far better documented and is generally considered the first “official” ascent to the summit, with Dryer and company’s attempt deemed to have fallen a couple hundred feet short. At any rate, there is no dispute that the Barlows achieved their goal of reaching and establishing a new home in the Oregon Country, with their party arriving in the burgeoning Oregon City on Christmas night in 1845.
but his son William, who lived there and started a sawmill, a gristmill, the post office, and the Barlow Bank and Land Development Company. The late 1800s was Barlow’s heyday, as the city was home to more than 40 families and boasted a school, a bank, two churches, two hotels, two general stores, three saloons, a feed store, a livery stable, and a newspaper. Downtown Barlow had wooden sidewalks and white picket fences. (CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE)
Barlow was appointed justice of the peace for Clackamas County (which was much larger in those days) by acting Governor Kintzing Prichette in 1850 — the same year that he bought a donation land claim from Canadian explorer and fur trader Thomas McKay — who later led a militia company that saw action in the Cayuse War. The land was eventually sold to Samuel’s son, William, portions of which would eventually form the town of Barlow and the historic William Barlow House. Initially the largest and most prosperous of the “ABC” sister cities, a train station was established in Barlow when the O&C Railroad was built in 1870. It remained the main stop in the area until the explosion of fertile farmlands in Canby fueled an economic and population boom — necessitating an expanded station to accommodate the crops and cattle being exported down to the Southern Pacific Railroad route. Barlow’s post office was established in February 1871 and would serve the area more than a hundred years, closing its doors on January 3, 1975. The town was incorporated in 1903 as Barlow, named not after the famous Samuel Barlow,

Yet while Canby thrived, thanks to a higher and drier location that was less likely to flood, Barlow stagnated and declined. By the early 20th century, Barlow was little more than a ghost town. It did not start attracting many new residents until after World War II.

f you’re driving around you may spot a colorfully wrapped SUV sporting a large smiley face on the hood. Say “hello” to Patio Cover People, a Northwest company which recently relocated by new owner, Tom Moore. Seeking a business opportunity that would serve the community, as well as provide for his family, Tom found Patio Cover People to be the perfect fit. Tom, along with a business associate and long-time friend Chris McReynolds, partnered together to take an owner-operated company to the next level. Acquiring Patio Cover People in September of 2021, Tom is excited to celebrate the first six months of business with numerous positive changes within the company. Some changes that have been implemented include administrative practices such as inventory management and scheduling. Also rolled out was a new system for delivering the final invoice, which was aimed at improving the experience, providing a better presentation, and offering more clarity for the customer. Other changes focus on superior customer service, better communication in all areas, and creating a positive work environment for the Patio Cover People team. Tom has a diverse professional background in organizations ranging from non-profit to hightech and software. And, he noted, that “once upon a time” he worked for Intel. Tom’s also been involved

in a number of start-up companies and worn many hats. Individual Contributor, Senior Manager / Executive, and Trouble Shooter have been among his various roles. Problem-solving for struggling businesses became an area of expertise. In retrospect, rather than continuing these endeavors for outside companies, he asked himself— why not put the knowledge to use for his own business? Patio Cover People checked all the boxes, offering the ideal platform for Tom and Chris to implement their vision: “Build a business that stands apart.” Employing elevated standards of practice within this constructionbased industry, Patio Cover People focuses on being sensitive to others’ needs, doing right by the customer, offering exceptional communication, keeping promises, and delivering quality products. solve problems and make it better.”
So what is Patio Cover People all about? Patio Cover People installs high-quality daylight patio covers with the option to add railings, outdoor room enclosures, decks, and concrete work to the patio cover order. One prominent advantage of a Patio Cover People construction is the Acrylic material used for their patio roof covers which allows more daylight to penetrate under the patio cover as well as filter into the home. This can be especially nice for the Northwest with its numerous cloudy days. In addition, these Acrylic covers reflect approximately three-fourths of the heat away from the living space which, in turn, creates a more comfortable environment year-round. And when winter sets in, be assured that these patio covers are designed and engineered to withstand the snow-load and high winds here in the Northwest.
Tom stands behind Patio Cover People in the face of any competitor. Given his commitment to quality and service, he offers the whole package: quality installation, quality product, quality service, and a quality experience with a focus on customer experience. He welcomes feedback from clients, and will do everything in his power to ensure they have a positive experience and come away satisfied.
Tom continues to strive to make his business, Patio Cover People, even better! He has more positive changes in the works, and is ever on the lookout for people to spread the word.
