What does the title refer to?

Irina Cristea: For the last 15 years our practice has worked on projects of all sizes, which demand very different time-frames. Time is an important factor in our work. The design that emerges from each study phase is determined by the time allocated to it, from the initial ideas to going on site, through all the various intermediary stages. Some projects are completed very quickly, in a burst of concentrated energy, whereas others are real marathons and require huge endurance.

Irina Cristea : Depuis quinze ans, notre agence est engagée dans des projets de toutes tailles qui impliquent chacun des temps d’élaboration très différents. Le temps est une donnée importante de notre métier. Chaque étape et chaque processus de conception sont déterminés par le temps qui leur est consacré, des premières intentions au chantier en passant par les différentes phases d’études. Certains projets se réalisent très vite, dans une énergie concentrée, alors que d’autres sont de véritables marathons et demandent beaucoup d’endurance.

Grégoire Zündel : Nous avons travaillé à de nombreux projets de bâtiments,

of the design stage, unforeseeable hold-ups, accelerations, schedules for building and the different contractors, and time to talk with the client. For example, with the metro stations we are designing for the extension of line 14 in Paris or for the line B in Rennes, we have encountered a whole new idea of temporality. These major projects are planned well in advance, their technical and urban constraints have a powerful impact on the design, and their decision-making processes are complex and so much slower.

On the other hand, temporary architectural projects engender an extremely rapid and concentrated way of working.

There is very little time between the idea and its realisation.

The Peace Pavilion was designed and built in only six weeks before being installed in Bethnal Green in London.

Avec les stations de métro que nous concevons pour l’extension de la ligne 14 à Paris ou pour la ligne B du métro de Rennes, nous découvrons une temporalité toute différente. Ce sont des projets planifiés très en amont, dont les contraintes techniques et urbaines impactent fortement la conception ; les circuits de décision sont complexes et donc beaucoup plus longs.

Les projets d’architecture temporaire engendrent au contraire une façon de travailler extrêmement rapide et dense.

Il y a très peu de temps entre l’idée et la réalisation. Les études et la construction du Peace Pavilion ont duré seulement six semaines avant qu’il soit installé à Londres, dans le quartier de Bethnal Green.

I.C.: These different experiences gave us the idea of presenting our work in separate books, which refer to the different lengths of time projects need.

But time intervenes in many other ways.

Projects for urban installations such as Bouncing Bridge, Peace Pavilion or Water Invaders, prompted us to think, for example, about the timescale of urban intervention. How can we make a mark on a city with a project that has a small budget and, specifically, a much shorter schedule, which responds to a need within a limited time, and gives meaning to, or opens up a site without undertaking a lengthy construction or development process? Architects can and must be able to work with this reactivity, because times are changing, the expectations, the budgets, are not always those of a traditional project.

G.Z: Our work is also strongly defined by the risk of obsolescence.

A notion that is often given inadequate consideration is that of ‘durability’.

We aspire to design timeless architecture. We can suppose that our buildings will be faced with changes in users, in use, or in environmental and

Comment intervenir en ville avec des budgets réduits et surtout dans des délais beaucoup plus courts, répondre à un besoin dans un temps restreint, qualifier, révéler un lieu sans un long processus de construction ou d’aménagement ?

Les architectes peuvent et doivent travailler aussi avec cette réactivité car l’époque change, les attentes, les budgets ne sont plus toujours ceux d’une intervention classique.

In 2012, a design ideas competition proposed coming up with a new bridge for Paris; contemporary, innovative, and with neither site nor use specified. This scheme subverted everything expected of a bridge: its shape, its materials and its use. The bridge’s arches are three inflatable PVC modules, each 30m in diameter. In the centre of each of these giant inflatable rings are trampolines, for a fun and unusual experience in the city. In 2013, the idea of a trampoline bridge became a reality: a prototype ring, 10m in diameter, was made and tried out on Banyoles Lake, near Girona, Spain, demonstrating the project’s technical feasibility. Designed to cross the 90m width of the Seine, the project could equally exist in a range of dimensions.

En 2012, un concours d’idées propose d’imaginer, pour la ville de Paris, un nouveau pont, contemporain et innovant, sans contrainte de site ou d’usage. Le projet détourne tous les éléments attendus d’un pont : la forme, les matériaux et l’usage. Les arches du pont sont réalisées par trois modules gonflables en PVC de 30 mètres de diamètre. Au centre de ces gigantesques bouées sont installés des trampolines, qui invitent à une expérience ludique et insolite dans la ville. En 2013, l’idée d’un pont trampoline est devenue réalité : une bouée prototype de 10 mètres a été réalisée et utilisée sur l’étang de Banyoles, près de Gérone, en Espagne, démontrant la faisabilité technique du projet. Conçu pour franchir la Seine sur 90 mètres, le projet peut prendre des dimensions très diverses.

From development, to fixing up, to driving forwards.

If economics can have alternative policies, why not urbanism?

We have spent the last few decades fixing up parts of our towns – never actually finishing them of course, for a city can never be completed – and sometimes without much success, as our large housing projects demonstrate. Faced with the ecological disasters caused by deindustrialisation, out-dated housing and the pre-eminence of the car, we have patched things up, undoubtedly causing new problems in doing so. However, a growing movement is mobilising brainpower to generate new ideas and practices: change of use without redevelopment; consideration of the complex needs of a community rather than applying a set of pre-fabricated, technocratic solutions; preservation wherever possible, rather than starting from scratch…

Moving away from traditional considerations, this new movement deals with a new set of criteria, which includes reduced

Et si, comme en économie, d’autres politiques urbaines étaient possibles ?

L’on a, depuis plusieurs décennies, en partie réparé les villes. Sans naturellement en finir car jamais une cité ne s’achève, et avec parfois peu de succès comme dans les grands ensembles, tant le sujet est complexe et renvoie à des thèmes qui dépassent l’urbain. On a réparé, face à la désindustrialisation, à l’obsolescence de l’habitat, à la prééminence de la voiture, les blessures écologiques… en sachant qu’en même temps nous avons peut-être continué ailleurs à dégrader.

Pourtant, un mouvement commence à apparaître, qui mobilise les capacités intellectuelles sur des thèmes et des pratiques nouvelles : transformer le fonctionnement sans aménagement, privilégier les attentes sociales dans leur complexité plutôt que des solutions prémâchées et technocratiques, conserver ce que l’on peut et éviter de faire table rase... Se libérant des prérequis, il aborde comme un élément du contexte les données nouvelles liées à la diminution des budgets, à la demande

budgets, community needs, the possibility of future evolution. Rather than being a hindrance, economic constraints have helped by forcing us to get straight to the basic essentials. Today’s situation promotes innovation, supports creativity and enriches projects, calling on our intelligence.

We are forced to take a new look at practices and uses, to consider different ways of doing things, to think about the humanity of a place; and all this when we still find it so hard to understand community needs, and even more so to keep up with changing society.

Following this period of ‘patching up’, have we now arrived at a time where we can put our experiences to practical use?

The proposed changes in practice have the benefit of mobilising local communities and projects, often bringing a real dynamic to an area.

Instead of technique, materials and money, they put individuals and urban communities at the heart of the thought process. They open

Elles incitent à mettre au cœur du sujet non la technique, les matériaux, l’argent, mais l’individu et la société urbaine. Elles étendent les possibles grâce à l’innovation, tandis que les approches créatives entre projets et appropriation permettent de créer une urbanité plus vive, plus active, plus mouvante, plus réactive aussi, à l’image de la société urbaine.

And this is the position taken by AZC architects.

Faced with a changing world, they propose solutions that are novel in their shape, use, cost and temporality.

Take for example their idea for a bridge over the Seine in Paris, the Bouncing Bridge. Inflatable, easily moved, it provides not only a means of crossing the river, but also an extraordinary urban experience.

It shows Paris in a whole new light, creating this most unexpected trampoline in the heart of the capital. This project, ostensibly utopian, is in fact both realistic and realisable. The architects put their intelligence and skill not into regurgitating conventional solutions, which are often unsuitable and unsatisfactory, but into inventing new ones.

Ainsi en est-il du parti pris par les architectes d’AZC. Face à un contexte qui a évolué, ils proposent des solutions qui dans leur forme, leur usage, leur économie, leur temporalité sont nouvelles.

Prenons l’exemple de leur proposition de pont sur la Seine, le Bouncing Bridge.

Gonflable, facile à déplacer, il permet de traverser le fleuve, mais offre également une expérience urbaine singulière. En effet, il fait découvrir Paris autrement et crée une sorte de trampoline inattendu en plein cœur de la capitale. Ce projet, à première vue utopique, est en fait réaliste et réalisable. Les architectes ont utilisé leur intelligence et leur savoir non pour répéter des solutions conventionnelles parfois inadaptées et insatisfaisantes, mais pour inventer des solutions contemporaines. Ils ne sont plus dans une reproduction statique de la ville et des formes du XIXe siècle, dans la répétition d’une culture d’avant, mais bien dans la construction de réponses de notre temps. Est-ce la modernité ?

My first contact with the trampoline was all about the fun you could have on it: pure pleasure, lots of laughing, losing your balance and experiencing a rare sense of freedom. To give you a flavour of what professional trampolining is like, imagine you are flying along your very own rollercoaster – hold on tight!

Standing up, sitting down, on your stomach or back, you have an incredible feeling of lightness, freedom and even weightlessness.

It's sport in space – as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon on 21 July 1969, he said: “It’s like a trampoline!”

Trampolining, as an acrobatic sport, demands extreme concentration, similar to that of a Formula One driver who has to process a maximum amount of information in a minimum of time. Multiple somersaults and spins eight metres up in the air require grace, technique and a perfect control of the body. Trampolining is not about improvisation, but is planned to the nearest centimetre. During a 20-second exercise, the athlete has only four seconds where he can use his visual perception. The rest

Trampolining began with two professional trapeze artists known as ‘Due Trampoline’, who used the elasticity of the safety net to perform acrobatic jumps.

In 1936, thanks to equipment invented in the United States by George Nissen, a physical education teacher, Icarus’s dream finally became possible: jumping, soaring upwards, gliding, bouncing on a mesh to better leap back into the air again.

This prototype was used to train pilots and cosmonauts, but after the end of the war, American schools and universities began to include trampolining as part of physical education, leading fairly quickly to the development of trampolining as a competitive sport. In 1948, the first USA championships took place. This most beautiful piece of sports equipment in the world, the one that allows you to control your body in space, officially arrived in France in 1965, and within five years had become an elite sport. From then on, trampolining quickly became established as an important means of making progress in all other acrobatic sports.

L'origine du trampoline serait due à deux trapézistes professionnels se faisant appeler « Due Trampoline » qui utilisaient l'élasticité du filet de protection pour exécuter des sauts acrobatiques. Mais c’est en 1936, grâce à un engin inventé aux États-Unis par George Nissen, professeur d'éducation physique, que le vieux rêve d'Icare devient possible : sauter, s'élever, planer, rebondir sur une toile pour mieux repartir dans les airs. Ce prototype devait servir pour la préparation des pilotes de chasse et des cosmonautes, mais dès la fin de la guerre, les écoles et les universités américaines incorporent le trampoline aux programmes d'EPS, amenant ainsi rapidement ce nouveau sport en compétition. En 1948 a lieu le premier championnat des USA. La plus belle machine du monde, celle qui offre la maîtrise du corps dans l'espace, arrive officiellement en France en 1965 et devient en cinq ans un sport d'élite. Le trampoline s’impose très vite comme un moyen de progression important pour tous les autres sports acrobatiques.

I have worked for the Cirque du Soleil for over thirteen years, where my everyday life involves a mix of artistic performances most of which are developed from sport practised at a professional level. Experienced athletes from all over the world have learnt how to transfer their skills into a new discipline – circus, to the delight of our audiences. Physical exercise has more and more of a role in our everyday health, it has such potential, and there are so many positive cultural spin-offs so beneficial for society today. Through sharing, effort and enjoyment, sport generates a really positive energy.

This energy should be supported, recognised and widely broadcast throughout the city, it’s such a viral thing. The Bouncing Bridge is an initiative that fits perfectly with these needs. An appealing, bouncing surface, for a softly extreme and seriously fun experience.

A few seconds of freedom, feet in the air, releasing you from everyday routine with your head upside down and a new perspective on the city.

Je travaille pour le Cirque du Soleil depuis plus de treize ans et je vis au quotidien un très harmonieux mariage de performances artistiques diverses, dont une majorité est issue du sport de haut niveau. Des athlètes émérites, de toutes nationalités, ont su transférer leur savoir-faire dans une nouvelle discipline circassienne pour le plus grand plaisir des spectateurs.

L’exercice physique fait de plus en plus partie de notre santé quotidienne et possède des potentiels et des dérivés culturels réellement bénéfiques pour notre société actuelle. Au travers du partage, de l’effort et du plaisir, le sport est source d’énergie positive. Cette énergie doit être supportée, reconnue et largement diffusée au sein de la ville, tant elle est virale.

Le Bouncing Bridge représente une initiative tout à fait en lien avec ce besoin : un filet rebond très attrayant pour une expérience légèrement extrême et sérieusement ludique.

Every year, ArchTriumph, an organisation promoting architecture and design, installs a temporary, freestanding, portable pavilion in the grounds of the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, east London. This pavilion, competition winner in 2013, represents the theme Peace. Its shape derives from the undulations of a ring, which alternately touch the ground in three places and rise up to 4m in three others, inspired by trefoil knots and Mobius strips. The inflatable structure, which has a span of 10m, is covered by a transparent membrane.

Lightweight, self-supporting and ephemeral, the pavilion can adapt to a variety of sites and uses.

Chaque année, ArchTriumph, plateforme de promotion de l’architecture et du design, érige un pavillon temporaire, autoportant et transportable, dans les jardins du V&A Museum of Childhood, à Bethnal Green, quartier populaire de l’est londonien. Le pavillon, lauréat de l’édition 2013, est consacré à la paix.

Sa forme est issue de l'ondulation d'un anneau en trois dimensions, touchant le sol en trois points et s'élevant jusqu'à 4 mètres de hauteur. Elle s’inspire des nœuds de trèfle et des formes sans fin.

La structure gonflable, d’une envergure de 10 mètres, est recouverte d’une membrane transparente. Architecture légère, autoportante et éphémère, le pavillon peut s’adapter à des sites et à des besoins très variés.
