PRESIDENT’s INITIATIVES
In 2025, ACS Athens proudly celebrates 80 years of educational excellence—a legacy built on innovation, academic rigor, and Conscious Global Citizenship. This milestone is more than a reflection on the past; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to student success, continuous growth, and empowering educators to shape the leaders of tomorrow. From our home in Halandri, our students and alumni are already shaping industries, revolutionizing ideas, and leading with vision and courage. Through dynamic partnerships and transformative learning experiences, ACS Athens prepares students to thrive in an interconnected world. This year’s Gala Celebration was more than a gathering; it was a powerful statement of what we stand for and a bold declaration of what lies ahead. Honoring extraordinary alumni and guests—visionaries who have turned dreams into reality—we recognized individuals who have shaped history through art, space exploration, peacebuilding, and medical breakthroughs. Their achievements, born from challenges, remind us that greatness often emerges in uncertain times. Their stories inspire not just because of their success, but because of the obstacles they’ve overcome, proving that one person truly can change the world.
In a world of uncertainty—fragile institutions, a planet in crisis, and societies searching for unity—ACS Athens remains steadfast in its mission to inspire belief. We do more than teach; we cultivate conviction, ensuring that every student sees themselves as an architect of the future. As we embrace the transformative power of artificial intelligence, we recognize the responsibility to align innovation with humanity’s highest values. This is a moment to harness AI for societal good—bridging divides, fostering empathy, and driving ethical progress. But as we celebrate eight decades of excellence, let us not just reflect—let us recommit. Recommit to dreaming boldly, thinking critically, and leading with integrity. Recommit to shaping a future that is not just better, but extraordinary. At ACS Athens, we champion not just knowledge, but the power of significance—where success is measured not by status, but by impact.
Warm regards,
Peggy Pelonis, Ed.D. President, ACS Athens
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my warmest wishes as we celebrate this incredible milestone. Founded in 1945 by the British military and transformed under the U.S. Marshall Plan in 1947, the American Community Schools (ACS Athens) has grown into a distinguished international institution rooted in American educational values. Accredited by the Middle States Association (MSA), our school has upheld a tradition of academic excellence while fostering a diverse and dynamic learning environment. With three schools— Elementary, Middle School, and Academy—on one campus, ACS Athens provides a holistic education that nurtures intellectual, social, and ethical growth.
ACS Athens offers a rigorous academic curriculum, allowing students to earn an American high school diploma, an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, and a Greek High School equivalency diploma for Greek citizens. Beyond academics, students engage in enriching extracurricular activities, including Model United Nations, Forensics, Student Council, and award-winning athletic teams in basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and field, and swimming. Our programs ensure that every student is challenged, supported, and equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in higher education and beyond.
As we celebrate 80 years of excellence, we recognize the dedication of our President, faculty, and staff in shaping ACS Athens into the renowned institution it is today. With students from over 60 nationalities, our school continues to expand its offerings, embracing innovation while staying true to its mission. Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, we remain committed to providing outstanding educational experiences that empower our students to become global leaders.
Here’s to 80 years of achievement—and an even brighter future ahead!
Pascal Apostolides Chairperson
ACS Athens Board of Trustees
In the Grand Ballroom of the Grande Bretagne Hotel, more than 300 people gathered for a night like no other—a breathtaking ACS Athens celebration of 80 years of excellence, legacy, and impact. The evening was a testament to the extraordinary individuals who have carried our institution’s name to the farthest reaches of the world, leaving footprints of greatness wherever they tread. From the compelling stories of our astronaut, Scott Parazynski, who has touched the cosmos, to the brilliance of our Oscar-winning Special Guest, Alexander Payne, whose artistry has moved millions, each moment was filled with pride and inspiration. A special appearance by the Chargé d’Affaires, Maria Olson, US Embassy, added an air of distinction to an already unforgettable night. The powerful words of our alumni awardees—Charles Eliot, Georgios Petropoulos, and Mark Wolper—resonated deeply, reminding us that true success is measured not just in personal achievements but in the lives we uplift and the change we create. They are the embodiment of conscious global citizens, dedicating themselves to improving lives and fostering a more compassionate world. The night’s true stars, moreover, were our brilliant students—both on stage and behind the scenes—whose dedication ensured a flawless event, a testament to the future of excellence that lies ahead. And weaving it all together was our accomplished Master of Ceremonies, Yanna Darili, who infused the night with magic, warmth, and effortless grace. It was an evening of legacy and limitless possibility—a reminder of who we are, where we have been, and the boundless future that awaits.
Happy Birthday ACS Athens!
