21 EASTON STREET, HIGH WYCOMBE, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, HP11 1NT

Chairman’s Welcome Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s online match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors, and especially to those clubs who will be coming us for the first time. For 2023-24, our First XV will once again play in the ‘Regional 2 Thames’ league, which contains teams from both the London and South-West Division. Six of the sides have changed from last year so it will be interesting to see whether our high finish last year can be replicated. Level Six of the RFU pyramid will continue to provide a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here. Our Second XV plays in the snappily titled Counties 3 Tribute Berks, Bucks and Oxon South league. This is a Level Nine league, with a good proportion of local fixtures (Drifters, Farnham Royal, Marlow, Windsor): we hope that this will improve availability, which was an issue in 2022-23. The Seconds play a number of 1st XVs, some from clubs that we have previously faced at first team level. Their fixtures alternate with the First XV, so please give them your support if you aren’t travelling away with the 1s. Like most clubs we are always looking for new players. We hope to resurrect our 3rd XV this year, on an occasional basis. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to

anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome. As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. The club is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact Rob Elms (Minis) or Richard Clifford (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along. If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service. I really hope that you have an enjoyable day with us today. If you do, and you want to come back, please pick up a fixture card from the bar. Anyone and everyone you might want to contact is listed there. If you’re really modern, the information is also on our excellent website.

2024 is a significant date in the club’s history, our Centenary. The first ever match was & C HBoxing played Day in 1924 between a Chiltern team and a team of Berkhamsted I LT M on E HA Old Boys. The club was formed shortly after and apart from the war years (when incidentally a third of our players were killed in action) the club has always been at the heart of the local community. Nearly 50 years ago we were amongst the first clubs in the Tcountry to embrace Mini and Junior rugby and now provide sporting and social EN 4A R Y 1 9 2to opportunities all ages. In spite of being one of the biggest and best value sporting organisations in the area we are entirely self supporting. We are a charity and every year spend significant sums maintaining the infrastructure of the clubhouse and grounds. As well as subscriptions we are dependent on the support of our wonderful sponsors and advertisers, without whom the club would struggle to stay afloat. Our Centenary celebrations will run throughout the 2024/25 season. As events are firmed up we will share the details with you. A number of people have already come up with good ideas. In particular we want to use the occasion to raise significant funds to make the club as a whole, and the clubhouse in particular, more sustainable. Key events will include a Centenary dinner in October 2024, a December replay of the first club match against a Berkhamsted XV, and a match against a County XV with players chosen from all the Bucks clubs. Traditional club events such as the Minis Festival and the Presidents lunch will all continue as usual with a Centenary theme. There will be a Centenary ball at the end of the 24/25 season. A new logo will be designed for the Centenary and this will feature on a range of special Centenary playing and leisure kit. We are now looking for people to help make this happen. We need volunteers from all sections of the club to join the Centenary committee and to take ownership of key events. We have formed a task force with Jennie Cahill, myself and others who will convert ideas into actions over the coming months. If you would like to join us please contact Jennie, on 07894 293905 or jennie.cahill@icloud.com and we will arrange another meeting and look forward to working with you.

Thank you for being part of our Club and for all your support. On behalf of the centenary working group Peter Osborne

MATCH REPORT Match Report - Saturday 3rd February 2024 Hemel Hempstead RFC 1XV 3 - Amersham and Chiltern RFC 1XV 22 Half-time: (0 -5) ‘Chiltern temper Hemel as they use their heads to increase lead at top’ ‘You think you got the best of me Think you’ve had the last laugh Bet you think that everything good is gone Think you left me broken down Think that I’ll come running back Baby you don’t know me, ‘cause you’re dead wrong What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger Stand a little taller Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone What doesn’t kill you makes you a fighter Footsteps even lighter Doesn’t mean I’m over ‘cause you’re gone’

STRONGER - 2011 - KELLY CLARKSON ‘The boys done well’ on the Chaulden Lane plain, in the heart of Hemel Hempstead, in an eagerly anticipated rumble in the suburbs, as the best of Bucks took on a fresh challenge of Herts 4th placed Hemel Hempstead. In October a decent Hemel side had lost 30 -13 during a lively encounter at Weedon Lane and there was a strong sense that the now home side had a wee sniff of turning the tables on an increasingly confident Chiltern outfit.

MATCH REPORT

And so, it was with a 2.15pm kick off and busy clubhouse that the players took to the field, whilst many spectators took up their positions like tribes in the home and away roped off arena. I was delighted not to be the touch judge for this one and remain very grateful to young Charlie Swerling for enduring the frequent and very honest advice and comment from sections of the crowd.

To the action - wind in our faces and a healthy uphill challenge greeted Chiltern in the 1st half. A fairly lengthy period of no scoring rugby then took place as both sides poked and prodded at each other. Legally of course. It seemed an age until there was some stuff landed. Allegedly it was a deliberate head on, head on, our own Aaron Lewis just before a loss of temper and a loss that provided increased opportunity

TMATCH ROPER REPORT HCTAM for Jordan Scott to open the scoring, running through a tame defence into the corner (0-5). Half-time and looking forward to the wind on our backs 2nd half. Hemel responded early on in the 2nd half and after some pressure secured a penalty kick opportunity (3-5). Joyce kept the momentum going with a beautiful spin off from a rolling maul to score our 2nd try (3-10). Soon after it was the Jordan/Joyce couple again holding hands and bursting through a tiring Hemel defence (3-15).

MATCH REPORT Aaron Lewis was unsuccessful with all conversion chances. Joyce again with the speed of Bolt hooked round his little legs before scampering through for the bonus point win and at last a kickable conversion (3-22). Job done and a comfortable win after a slow start.

FROM THE TOUCHLINE by Huw Thomas First things first, today is our annual Sponsors’ Lunch and we are delighted to welcome to the club many of the people who do so much to keep rugby going here. We really could not do what we do without their generous support, and it is a pleasure to be able to acknowledge that. On the playing front, we welcome Old Priorians RFC to Ash Grove, and it promises to be a cracking game. They pushed us so close when we went to Perivale in the first week in November, when Chiltern won by the odd point in nineteen. Dan Kingsley scored the only try of a thrilling game. OPs are in decent form, with a big win at Aylesbury last time out, so we have every reason to expect a high quality and fiercely contested match today. We know that referee George Wallington-Smith will keep good order, and we welcome him too. You will note a few changes in the team this week. We have two debutants in Pat Nash and Mattia Mengotti, who have joined us from Ealing Trailfinders and Weybridge Vandals respectively. Alex Bower hurt his knee against Hemel and Tim Hayes has come back from university to answer the call (as has Max Morphey at prop). Bojan Cecaric has gone off to play for Serbia (honest) and so Jack Kenyon makes his 842nd appearance for the 1st XV. Callum Nolan-Hutchinson makes his first start at No.10 and we’re hoping he can manufacture space to give Jordan Sullivan-Warner a run on the wing. It’s also good to see Kieran “Wrestling” Booth and Charlie Swerling back on the team sheet. Our last game was away at Hemel Hempstead. It was a dour affair, and the boys did well to grind out a bonus point win. Jordan Scott, then Chris Joyce, then Jordan Scott, and then Chris Joyce scored the tries. The conversion of the last one was the final kick of the game, so we cut it fine but got the job done. The week before Hemel, we had entertained Chobham and beaten them convincingly, 59-22. Harry Bradshaw, Jordan Scott, Tom Fawssett, Bojan Cecaric (2), Chris Joyce, Alex Bower, Callum NolanHutchinson and Dave Francis all helped themselves to tries. Defence coach Mike Smith wasn’t happy about Chobham’s four scores, but you can’t have everything (and the lads did tighten things up in the Hemel game). The 2nd XV travel down to Windsor for a league game today. Given their campaign so far, they should be confident, but I’m sure they’ll be hoping for more of a contest than their last match, against Aldermaston, which was cut short by the referee at 82-0. It was good of Aldermaston to travel without a full side but the 2s need to keep winning and secure stronger opposition next year. Finally, I’d like to welcome Harrison Francis and Luca Rice to the club. I hope they turn out to be more reliable than their fathers (Dave and Jonny, respectively). HUW

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT JACQUES O’DRISCOLL My goodness me this is quite a trek to find probably one of the keenest and most charming world travelers. With a wallet bursting with Avios points and skin punctured with ‘big boy’ injection wounds, from multiple travel inoculations, there is little doubt that Jacques O’Driscoll will be found somewhere in the Chilterns, up a hill (there are no mountains) and/or down a dale, snacking on snails, with a multi-pack of Tayto crisps and all washed down with a slurp from a thistle crested hipflask. Still an international man of mystery it is an absolute pleasure to spend some time gazing at a stunning view, with the big man, getting to know him and be able to share some of his intimate details. Born in the Aylesbury countryside in 1999, Jacques is also a huge Prince fan (must be

coincidence). Jacques explains he has always been a big boy and a wearer of extra-large pants, the way to his heart is the provision and opportunity to binge eat prawn cocktail crisps. Being a detailed man this in fact does not include Skips. On St Valentine’s Day and really any other day he will only consider sucking on some mild and dark chocolate. In the toilet he finds that the folding of toilet paper is a lot more effective than scrunching. ‘Andy - if you fold it right it means I don’t have to use wet wipes, that’s important when you have as much body hair as me’. I agree Jacques. Jacques was not named after the famous French diver and explorer Jacques Cousteau. In fact, he has no French blood in him at all, although he oozes Celtic charm gained from those proud lands of Scotland and Ireland. I mention that Scotland and France are known be the ‘auld alliance’ going way back to the days of Bonny Prince Charlie and that horrible English beast the Duke of Cumberland. He acknowledges that he has only eaten the snails to impress me today.

Film wise he loves ‘in Bruges’ - I explain Bruges is in Belgium as he describes the Americans going up the Tower. It really makes him laugh. Goodness me it’s a loud laugh. Somewhat outspoken Jacques explains that he would like to see the USA under British rule again. I have sign posted him to watch on Amazon - Outlander. He is a fan of red coats, and his favourite nursery rhyme is Little Red Riding Hood. In the heat he adores a Southern Comfort on the rocks with a dash of lemonade. In the cold he swirls a deep red Rioja around his mouth swallowing it when at mouth temperature. Swirled and not stirred of course. When he walks or even sits on a plane, he is the first to sing a song. It’s not nerves as he just likes to make sure everyone knows

he is around. He is a lover of country music, and in turn Shania Twain (good taste and my type also). ‘Dear Maria Count me in’ apparently gets the crowd warmed up. Since Wasps were stung Jacques looks for Saracens results. His brother Alex is a Saracen and a Jock. He’ll undoubtedly go far and apparently has stunning good looks! Strong views regarding the Scottish try not given against France. Comments cannot be published, and Jacques will talk about it ‘no more’. No proclamations and a calm thoughtful pose. If he was ever

sentenced to death his last meal request would be baked camembert, chicken Khao soy and baked Alaska. Can’t get any more international than that young man I exclaim. I’d have Swedish meatballs every day of the week with a lingonberry dip. In 10 years’ time he sees himself living abroad, having designed a new battery storage system living off the patent money. He will of course still be commuting to Chiltern for his weekend romp in our second row. With a recently repaired face, a lovely smile and always a helping hand behind the Chiltern bar - Jacques O’Driscoll we salute you.

SPONSORS AND ADVERTISERS WHY WE NEED YOU

T

he rugby club is run as a charity and in a good year the income from subs and the clubhouse and sponsors means we just about break even. We have been active in the local community for close to 100 years. In fact, our Centenary Season is 2024/2025. Our loyal members are very supportive and over the years we have done various fundraising schemes to Peter, pictured here, always improve every aspect of the club. The clubhouse itself in his A&C attire, chatting on was the biggest and others have followed such as solar match day panels, the new car park and of course the borehole, without which we would not have been able to start the season on Saturday. Incidentally our energy costs have increased dramatically, and we now have a renewed focus on ways to become more energy efficient and sustainable. Pitch maintenance is another big expense, with an extra £20,000 spent this summer on top of the £35,000 spent last year in addition to the upgraded our floodlights. We now estimate that we need to spend some £100,000+ on club house refurbishments. One reason for doing this is to make the club house the kind of place people will want to use for events, from private parties to corporate away days. And of course our sponsors and advertisers are always welcome at the club for lunch on home match days. So without the support of our sponsors and advertisers it would just not be possible to contemplate the level of capital expenses we face every year. We have a huge responsibility to our members and to the wider community, we get no external support even though we are one of the biggest sports clubs in the area and provide outstanding pastoral care and specialist coaching to players of all ages. We recognise that in return for the fantastic support we get we need to work with our sponsors and advertisers to see how we can help them. Jennie Cahill will be delighted to hear from you with ideas and suggestions. Please contact her on 07894 293905 or jennie.cahill@icloud.com. Most importantly we want our members to use the products and services in this programme.

Thank you for all your support. Peter Osborne Director OSBORNE SAMUEL GALLERY
