Chairman’s Welcome
Welcome to Amersham and Chiltern’s match programme. A particular welcome to the players, officials, and supporters of our visitors.
For a second year, our 1st XV play in the Regional 1 South East league of the RFU’s London and South-East Division. This is Level Five of the RFU pyramid and provides a standard of rugby that is very testing for a club from a relatively small town like Amersham. We are proud to compete here.
Thanks to the vagaries of RFU administration, our 2nd XV is in the South-West Division, and play in the Counties 2 Tribute Bucks, Berks and Oxon East competition. They are usually, but not always at home when the Firsts are away.
The Third XV play in an informal competition for Bucks third teams, usually under lights on a Friday evening. They provide competitive but social rugby for those who cannot commit to weekly league matches and training.
Like most clubs, we are always looking for new players. If you would like to join in, at any level, please contact our Director of Rugby, Pete Gibson, or get in touch through the club website. Alternatively, go old school and ask at the bar, or speak to anyone involved with one of the teams. You will be very welcome.
As well as our adult sides, we run extraordinarily successful Mini and Junior Sections, providing rugby for age groups from Under 6 to Under 18. Last year we won the County Cup at U14 and U15 and narrowly lost in the final of the U16 competition. The club is
absolutely buzzing on a Sunday, when training and matches take place. If you have a child who would like to try rugby or one who already plays, please contact James Stacpoole (Minis) or Rob Elms (Juniors) - or just bring your boy or girl along.
Last year we started up a Women’s team, which has gone from strength to strength. They are keen to recruit new and experienced players and will give both the warmest of welcomes. If you or anyone you know want to get involved, contact Vicky Edington or Gareth Bourne.
If you have five minutes before the game starts, please flick through the other pages of this programme and check out our fantastic sponsors. They are all great local companies; without their support it would be very difficult for us to continue. If you could use any of them, and mention where you saw their name, you would be doing the club and the game a real service.
Along with the rugby, we have a full calendar of social events, details of which can be seen elsewhere in this programme, on the website, or on the posters in the clubhouse. Whatever your level of interest in rugby, it’s a great club to be a member of, and we’d love to have you join us.

After a surprising and disappointing home loss a couple of weeks before against Hertford, Shelford provided a timely opportunity for our boys to impress our ever-expectant home crowd and hopefully secure our first home win of the season. I even heard some say that it would be a joy to secure the win with a comfortable margin, making up for the many near misses endured to date.
Seventh placed Shelford travelled to Weedon Lane in good heart despite us having secured a hard-fought double over them last season. They had had recent notable successes with most recently a close 2-point win (45 – 43) against 4th placed Sudbury and then a hard-fought draw (29-29) against North Walsham, no easy task.
In selection we welcomed Will Price (Back Row) and Michael Everett (bench) back after injury. Both teams and spectators fell silent prior to kick off in remembrance and advance of the approaching Armistice Day.
And so, to the action......
Interesting Shelford started the best and after only 4 mins gained the initial ground and secured a penalty they chose to kick (offside). Would it they chose to kick (offside). Would it be the case they would try and build some points? At that point there had been no concerted efforts to score a try. (0-3). In response Amersham impressed both in tempo and with play across both back and for-
MATCH REPORT
wards. Set plays in scrum and lineout were also secure marking a significant difference from 2 weeks ago. Surprisingly and after extensive defensive efforts from Shelford it was Centre and kicker Harry Stevens finishing off confidently a great backs attack for our opening try and conversion – 25th min (7-3). A&C continued to have most of the possession and just before the break it was No8 Kaz Olayinka scoring the 2nd try following a lineout and maul impressively forcing Shelford back with little resistance. Harry kicked the conversion well (14-3). Set plays in scrum and lineout were also secure marking a significant difference from 2 weeks ago. Frustratingly though with some slack play and defence some demons re-emerged with Shelford scoring a converted try prior to the H/T whistle. (14-10).
Traditionally Chiltern have not played the first 20mins of the second half well and therefore the team talk clearly had to address matters. It seemed to work with winger Michael MacKenzieCrooks cutting through the Shelford defence with a sprinkling of cut-ins and acceleration. This time a tricky conversion slotted impressively by Harry (21-10). We didn’t have to wait long for our 4th bonus point try which was scored by a marauding Doug McGregor-Smith who was fresh on from the bench. Again, some great mauling by all. (28-10) and comfortable. Shelford wouldn’t roll over and deservedly scored their 2nd try on 56 mins (converted) - (28-17). With some anxiety in the heart,
I’m delighted to say that after a period of competitive stuff from both sides it was A&C pulling away with a 5th try from MacKenzie South our other winger finishing a collective move in style. Terrific conversion again from Harry (35-17).
5 points secured with an away trip, next Saturday to Rochester to take on Medway a few points above us. All to play for and the smiles have returned.

MATCH REPORT
Saturday 22nd November 2025 - 3pm - Priestfields , Rochester
Medway 1XV – 29 v Amersham and Chiltern 1XV - 28 (HT 14 - 10)
WE CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THAT THE RAIN HAS GONE
‘I can see clearly now the rain has gone I can see all obstacles in my way Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It’s gonna be a bright (bright) sun shiny day’
Johnny Nash - 1972
Rochester can be quite a scenic place if the weather if the conditions are right. As we travelled past the imposing fortress of Rochester Castle the conditions were damp alongside a Scottish breeze which is the same as an English gale. At this the windscreen wipers were intermittent although we knew the forecast was to deteriorate Medway 7th and A&C 10th. Home advantage is gold, and Medway had had some decent results, including a home win against Tring. With approx. 20 advertising flags fluttering violently in the impending doom we were served the reminder that the wind and rain would undoubtedly have a bearing on the result.
And so, to the action......
With Josh back at our helm the toss was duly won, and I think rightly we chose to have the wind on our backs. During warm up and the first half the rain in fact stayed away and the hope was it would not come back and if it did it would be on another day. I resisted singing the well-known nursery rhyme.
Pitch was in excellent condition and the advertising flags sounded like a Mclaren super car constantly revving at top speed. Scrum half Ben Harris flew over the Medway pack for a well-deserved opener duly converted by Harry Stevens (14 mins 0-7). Amersham kept their

foot on Maedway’s throat with some relentless attacking. Only 4 mins later it was Joe Batt scoring the second try from an impressive rolling mall. Beautifully converted (0-14). Despite Medway struggling to get out of their own 22 it was becoming clear that the scrum, particularly the front row would be an important area. The referee did not appear to have been an exforward in size although many experts from both sides seemed to watching. Medway did manage to secure several penalties for things far too technical for me to understand. On the 31st minute Captain Josh broke through with a terrific 3rd try under the posts. Duly converted. (0-21). Just prior to half time and significantly with some good fortune from kick off Medway managed to get a
hard worked try prior to H/T (5-21).
The rain then didn’t go away, not come back another day and decided to join the gale all for the undoubted benefit of Medway. All credit to Amersham though who seemed up for the challenge opening the 2nd half with their 4th and bonus point try. Dan Kingsley slicing through for the 4th and bonus point try. Again Converted (528) kicked in and with a scrummage producing benefits and some initial tries momentum was
now with Medway. The Chase was on and with 3 further tries being scored and a penalty being given in the final minute they managed a kick to win by a point.
A terrific match for the home crowd and a home win. A match, though, that was affected by the weather. We look forward very much to the return match at Weedon Lane.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Westcliff RFC. For those who don’t know, Westcliff are near neighbours and great rivals to Southend. We have played them before, the last time we were at Level 5, and it will be a great pleasure to renew acquaintances. Westcliff currently sit in eighth place in the Regional 1 South East Table, two places and three points ahead of us. The competition is very tight, and a win today would help either side enormously.

The last 1st XV home fixture saw us beat Shelford 35-17. Tries from Harry Stevens and Kaz Olayinka let us go in 14-10 ahead at half time. Two more tries, from Michael Mackenzie-Crooks and Doug McGregor-Smith meant that we looked quite comfortable after an hour, 28-10 up. Shelford threatened briefly and brought it back to 28-17, before Mackenzie South topped off a great team move to grab a fifth try for the home side. Shelford are no pushover, and the Chiltern coaches were as pleased with the very convincing performance as the result.
Arnold Funeral Service Match Day Lunch
Last week the boys went down to Medway, a first for the club. I was unable to travel but we were ably represented on the social front by Peter Kenyon and David Crimp. I understand that they were royally received and look forward to seeing their/our new friends again in March. On the field, we were unlucky to lose by the odd point in 57. The game was dominated by a strong wind blowing straight down the field. We had first use and tries from Ben Harris, Joe Batt and Josh Finch put us 5-21 ahead at half time. Dan Kingsley crossed to take us to 5-28 just after the restart, but from then on it was all Medway. Three tries put the home side within two points before a last-minute penalty gave them a 29-28 win. By all accounts, both teams gave a spirited and skilful display in appalling conditions. Two bonus points made it seven from a possible ten for Chiltern in their last two games, which is encouraging.
The Mighty Twos travel to Marlow today. We are fourth in the league table with a game in hand over two of the teams above them. The 2s have now won four in a row. Three weeks ago, they beat Henley 3s at Dry Leas in a game that did take place but had to be recorded as a walkover because the home team could not field a front row. Last week, our 2s beat Slough 1st XV 41-0 at home. It was a great performance, and the boys can only beat what’s in front of them, but, as someone who can remember Slough as a power in Bucks rugby, the margin of victory gives me some pause for thought.

MICHAEL (MIKEY) EVERETT
It’s not often that I get an invitation to attend a suit fitting in Marlow High Street at the home of fine suits, Charles Tyrwhitt. Then again, it’s not often I get to spend some quality time with an absolutely charming young man who is and respected young back rows at the club. I arrive a tad early.
5 mins early in fact and have a warm-up chat with the young sales assistant (they’re getting younger - you know). Just at the point we establish that absolutely nothing will fit me in the showroom - ‘arms too long, legs too muscular’ etc, Michael (Mikey) Everett walks through the front door some 30 mins late. “I’m often late, Andy, and it can be a bit of a problem, but I’m trying to get better. He’s such a charmer, he’ll do very well in the land of financial advice. I decline coffee and sandwiches whilst Michael tucks in as he selects some suits to try for size. He chats as he eats (and drinks). His appetite is ferocious.
A millennial child (dob 26/04/2000) of the bull (Taurus), you’d think he
would be a Red Bull man like Jurgen Klopp, ‘shaken not stirred’, especially as he was born a Londoner and a lover of fine fashion. I notice that as he sips on his coffee, he is humming to himself the great escape tune, which has recently been heard over and over again in Perth, Australia, played by, of course, the wonderful Barmy Army. He is a renowned smooth operator, and therefore Sade is a significant woman icon in his dreams. I notice that the accompanying biscuits are caramel there will be no staining on the silk ties. ’ Although for him. Worringly, he
He loves the combination of maroon and white, and hence the Met line is his favourite. He is very proud of A&C as the Met Line adopted our club colours. Fantastic taste! Michael remains an avid watcher of The Lord of the Rings. He has read all the books and has played all the games. He explains discreetly that he has a small Hobbit tattoo on his left buttock. I merely ask him to ensure he keeps his pants on when changing.
So why meet in Charles Tyrwhitt? Michael is still very excited by finance, money and especially compound interest. He is currently completing his exams under the tutelage of the mighty A&C legend Peter Fulcher. ‘You need to look the part, Andy, and therefore I have a minimum of ten suits (all colours of the rainbow). He explains that this diversity is crucial for him owing to his South African heritage. He also explains that he will soon have a rainbow tattoo added to his right buttock. Hobbit and Rainbow - quite a cute combo.
In 10 years, he sees himself as the 3rd-team captain. He also hopes to see more of his favourite premiership team - Sale Sharks. As well as business suits, Michael also likes rugby shorts. ‘Why’ - I ask only to be told that he likes exposing his muscly thighs. A keen skier, he is a regular in the rain on the slopes of Glen Coe. Whilst enjoying Scotland, he plays on some links courses whilst sipping a smooth 15-year-old Glenmorangie. He is one younger brother, whom he describes as ‘lanky’. Again, he slips Scottish words easily into conversation - so considerate. If he were ever to dye his hair, he would dye it blonde to hide his grey hair. If he were ever being executed, you never know, then he would be carving up a Tomahawk Steak - very proteinheavy!
Michael Everett - the world is at your feet, and you are a Chilt through and through. Back row
stalwart and a man with a huge appetite. You can have seconds anytimewe salute you!

SPONSORS AND ADVERTISERS
Why do we need Sponsors and Advertisers?
The rugby club is run as a charity and in a good year the income from subs and the clubhouse events and sponsors means we just about break even.
Last season we celebrated 100 years of our active presence in the local community. The senior club was founded in 1924 and just as importantly we were one of the pioneer clubs who started mini rugby 51 years ago. We continue to provide a wonderful rugby experience for players and supporters of all ages.
Peter, pictured here, always in his A&C attire, chatting on match day
Our loyal members are very supportive and over the years we have done various fundraising schemes to improve every aspect of the club. The clubhouse itself was the biggest and others have followed such as the solar panels, the new car park and of course the borehole. All of these investments make it possible to start the season.
Incidentally with our energy costs increasing dramatically we need to focus on ways to become more energy efficient. We continually invest and the Centenary fundraising offers a great opportunity to make more progress. One reason for doing this is to make the club house the kind of place people will want to use for events, from private parties to corporate away days.
Of course, our sponsors and advertisers are always welcome at the club for lunch on home match days.
So, without the support of our sponsors and advertisers it would just not be possible to contemplate the level of capital expenses we face every year. We have a huge responsibility to our members and to the wider community, we get no external support even though we are one of the biggest sports clubs in the area and provide outstanding pastoral care and specialist coaching to players of all ages and their coaches too.
We recognise that in return for the fantastic support we get we need to work with our sponsors and advertisers to see how we can help them.
Ruthie Brockett, our Sponsorship & Publicity Manager, will be delighted to hear from you with ideas and suggestions. Please contact her on sponsorship@chilternrugby.com.
Most importantly we want our members to enjoy using the products and services in this programme.
Thank you for supporting our great Club.
