Dear ACG Sunderland Community As we all know, this week is examination week for students in Year Five to Year Thirteen, and we have all been very impressed with the focus and application of your children.

What’s in this issue:

This type of medium-stake assessment gives students, staff and parents a very accurate picture of the teaching and learning currently taking place.

I have also been reminding the students that we all just want to see improvement in their performance as we head towards the end of the year.

Next week will be one of the most important learning opportunities of the year, as staff go over the examination papers and students reflect on their strengths and also their weaknesses. Staff will work closely with your children giving them both written and verbal informative feedback. Please engage with your children during this process.

This week our Year Three and Year Four had their visit to Crystal Mountain as part of Science Week. The feedback has been very positive - “I have heard conversations about quarts and feldspar in the playground” - how wonderful!

Everyone in the Primary school is very much looking forward to the annual Grandparents Day on Friday 31 May, and I know that a lot of preparation is taking place in all the classes to entertain our Grandparents and Special Friends next Friday.

Primary News Outing What a wonderful trip the Year Three and Four classes had to Crystal Mountain.

We panned for crystals, rode a train, explored the barn, fed the farm animals and explored the museum.

Thank you Mr. Granger for organising this Science trip.

Visitor to the Primary Mahvash Ali visited the Primary assembly this week and inspired us with her stories about being a journalist and working for TV3 for The project.

Change to Parking for Grandparents and Special Friends Day There will be parking close to the front door for guests who need this option and request that those of you who do not mind a wee walk to use the remainder of the Ring Road.

This year the Ring Road will be open for parking at the rear of the school too.

Please pass this information on to your invited guests.

The first person to talk in the festival was of ‘Dawn Raid’ (2018), Pauline 0800 222 199the | 09writer 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave,Dawn Henderson, (Vaeluaga) Smith, a book about the raidsAuckland that happened in New Zealand from the mid-70s till early 80s. Her speech was about all the research and preparations to make a book about real life events and to spread awareness of the Dawn raids. I found that, although she did present her story well, it felt almost out of place as the other writers were more entertaining.

After Pauline (Vaeluaga) Smith, there was Sally Gardener, a dyslexic writer from the UK who is the author of ‘I, Coriander’ (2005), The red necklace (2007), The silver blade (2009), The double shadow (2011) and her most recent title, ‘Maggot moon’ (2012). Her speech was an inspirational one about growing up with dyslexia and overcoming it to become the writer she is today. I swiftly realised of how humorous she was, engaging her audience with such hilarious stories like of Jack and Jane, while secretly teaching them of the struggles of dyslexia.

After lunch, we were greeted by two tales about the battle for the first person to reach South pole, ‘Into the white: Scott’s Antarctic Odyssey’ (2017) and ‘Amundsen’s Way: the race to the South pole’, (2019) by Joanna Grochowicz. Her speech was all about telling the story of these two men as well as an interactive adventure filled with fake poo and moustaches! I loved how calm she was with the audience, so it made us feel relaxed, as well as her giving out fake moustaches to the kids that pretended to be the characters in her book.

The final writer, or poet in this case, was Luke Wright. His poems were based around his experiences. I really enjoyed that he was a sort of literary rebel that didn’t care if some of his poems were on the crude side, which made the audience) revel in his poems, laughing and cheering him along merrily, and I must admit I did too!

Overall this event was enjoyable and made me laugh more than I thought I would! Of course, the writer’s speeches were not completely perfect, but the thing is that they are just only human- just like all of us, and I could never do what they were doing in a thousand years, so I respect all of them for all of the qualities, faults and strengths, of their speeches.

The Writer's Festival: an event packed to the brim with fun, knowledge, and inspiration. Every year, for a limited time, the Writer's Festival brings out the best and most determined writers of the year, all here to teach school children how to make it through their difficulties and realise their full potential for literacy.

I don't know about the rest of the people who went to see, but I know our year 8 class enjoyed it more than I can possibly express in words. That being said, there were a few downs, but it doesn't need to be said that the ups were infinitely more numerous.

Anyways, what follows is a definitive review of the best literacy event of the year.

I personally think that this is one of the most fun school trips that you can go on. It has a vast array of authors from the inspirational yet hilarious Sally Gardner, to the factual and motivational story of Joanna Grochowicz. It combines the fun practical methods that Pauline Vaeluaga Smith uses so effectively while keeping with the light-hearted and hilarious ballads of Luke Wright.

I think everyone's favourite had to be either Sally or Luke- their 'performances' were so entertaining, you could see it all the times in the world and still have fun.

From our side of the story, we had a long but fun (there were many magnificent sights) bus ride to the city, watched two spectacular stories being told from a first-hand position, and had lunch. Then we watched another two stunning people in action, and departed for school, then home.

It doesn't sound like much, right? But it is probably one of the best experiences I will ever have, and I would not give up the memory of the day for anything. It has one of the most inspirational takeaways yet: never, EVER, give up. No matter what people say, you could be destined for greatness.

ACG Sunderland Ring Road I need to bring to the community’s attention the use of the Ring Road before and after school. It is imperative for the safety of our students and visitors to the school that you do not use the parking by reception unless you are using the Mobility Parking and you are a permit holder.

Please use the Ring Road to drop off your child either at the rear of the school or at the side by the Primary playground till 8.30am in the morning and the gates open in the afternoon at 3.00pm.

The speed limit is 5kmph and I ask you to respect this. We wish to retain our 100% safety record. Keep your speed down, watch out for pedestrians and use the correct parking and drop off areas.

URGENT NOTICE Parents and Caregivers using the Ring Road at the end of the school day, please note there is a PEDESTRIAN CROSSING by the Gymnasium now (just after the judder bar. PLEASE WATCH FOR STUDENTS.

There are also 12 new parks as you drive up the Ring Road to the Primary courts.
