FROM THE PRINCIPAL

From the Principal’s Desk –

August 2025

As we begin this new academic year, I am delighted to welcome back our students, staff, and families — and to extend a very special welcome to those joining the ACG School Jakarta community for the first time. August is always a month filled with excitement, anticipation, and the promise of new opportunities, and this year has been no exception.

A Strong Start to the Year

Our first weeks have been marked by energy and engagement across the campus. Students have settled quickly into their routines, embracing the Cambridge and IB programmes with curiosity and determination. The launch of our new House system Elang, Harimau, Pari, and Komodo has already brought a renewed sense of unity and spirited competition. The enthusiasm displayed during our first assemblies and house events truly reflects our vision of developing creative, innovative problem-solvers who act with courage and responsibility.

We also welcomed new staff members who bring with them a wealth of international experience and fresh perspectives, ensuring that we continue to deliver a worldclass, holistic education. Their integration into our team has been seamless, and I have already seen their positive impact in classrooms and around the school.

Celebrating Indonesia and Community Spirit

One of the highlights of August was our Independence Day Assembly, commemorating Indonesia’s 80th anniversary. Our students demonstrated pride, respect, and intercultural understanding through music, performance, and reflection living our mission of being open-minded and responsible global citizens.

Learning Beyond the Classroom –

IB Retreat and Camps

For our senior students, the year began with the IB Retreat, a powerful opportunity for Years 12 and 13 to focus on their Diploma Programme journey, bond as a cohort, and reflect on their goals for the year ahead. This retreat encouraged collaboration, timemanagement planning, and resilience qualities that will serve them well throughout the challenging but rewarding IBDP.

And the excitement doesn’t stop there we are preparing for the muchanticipated Sukabumi Camps for Years 7–13!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Students will soon have the chance to choose between two unforgettable experiences: Jungle Adventure: Trek through lush rainforest trails, discover hidden waterfalls, and put teamwork to the test with outdoor challenges that will build resilience, leadership, and confidence . City Tour: Explore the vibrant city life of Sukabumi, uncover its history and culture, and engage with local communities perfect for students who are curious about the human story behind the places we visit. Both pathways are designed to strengthen independence, foster friendships, and create lasting memories — all while connecting to the IB Learner Profile and Cambridge Global Perspectives.

A Shared Commitment

This year, as always, we remain committed to ensuring that every student feels known, supported, and challenged. We will continue to focus on literacy and well-being as schoolwide priorities, equipping students with the skills they need for success in their academic journey and beyond.

Thank you for your ongoing trust and partnership.

Together, we will make this a year filled with achievement, creativity, and growth for every learner in our care.

It is for this reason, that all our Primary Teachers are spending this year focusing on Literacy- reading, writing, listening & speaking and viewing & presenting. The focus will be taking part in Professional Development – teachers are life-long learners too.

FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL

Literacy in the Primary School

This year, one of our long-term strategic goals is to look at literacy across the whole of the Primary School and into Middle School.

When we look at what is best for students, we consider programmes and approaches that are consistent throughout their Primary School Years.

There is much to be read, at the moment around the Science of Reading. The Science of Reading is the comprehensive, evidence-based body of research from fields like education, psychology, linguistics and neuroscience that explains how reading develops and how to best instruct individuals to become proficient readers.

It emphasizes that reading is a complex cognitive skill, not a natural one, and highlights the importance of explicit and systematic instruction in key areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. This kind of research informs curriculum and teaching practices leading to evidence-based reading instruction.

FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL

The Science of Reading emphasizes the skills for proficient reading, often summarized as the 5 pillars or key components:

1 Phonemic Awareness – the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.

2. Phonics – The connection between letters (graphemes) and the sounds they represent (phonemes).

3. Fluency – The ability to read text accurately, at an appropriate pace and with expression.

4. Vocabulary – A deep understanding of word meanings.

5 Comprehension – The ability to understand the meaning of what is being read.

To start with, ACG are sending a group of our Primary teachers off on Phonics training. Here they will spend the day learning all about Phonics, Phonemic Awareness and how to best teach so that it can be differentiated, fun and successful for all our students. This consistent approach of teaching Phonics will see a marked improvement in overall progress in our students.

I am also very pleased to share that ACG has employed the expertise help from Louise Dempsey. Louise is an experienced teacher, consultant and trainer who has worked in New Zealand and the UK. She facilitates training and school-based professional learning in New Zealand and internationally. She has completed a range of writing projects for New Zealand and English Publishers, including the Department of Education in the UK.

Louise is an accredited trainer for the Ministry of Education in New Zealand. Lousie has also a co-author of “The Writing Book”, “The Oral Language Book”, “The Reading Book” and “The Poetry Book”.

FROM THE IBDP COORDINATOR

IBDP

of ACG School Jakarta

We’ve had an extremely busy and positive start to the academic year.

Our Year 12 students are now nearing the end of their first term in the IB Diploma Programme and have been settling well into their studies and senior school life. It has also been a pleasure to welcome several new students to the cohort this term.

Meanwhile, Year 13s are entering the more demanding stage of their programme, where much of their focus is on Internal Assessments and the Core elements of the course.

The highlight so far has been the IB Retreat, which our senior students attended earlier this week in Bogor. The event was filled with sessions and activities designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills to thrive in their senior years and beyond, as they prepare for university. Mr. Chesher led valuable wellbeing sessions, where students reflected on their strengths, values, and how these shape their habits, lives, and goals.

Ms. Dina facilitated CAS sessions with Year 12 and conducted final interviews with Year 13, which provided important guidance. Students also had opportunities for one-on-one sessions with teachers to review Internal Assessments or receive support in TOK.

Alongside the academic work, there was also time to relax and bond as a community, with pool activities and Quiz Night adding plenty of fun. The Retreat concluded with a walking tour of the Bogor Botanical Gardens and a visit to the Zoological Museum.

A big thank you to all of the teachers who supervised and led sessions on the trip - Mr. Chesher, Ms. Dina, Mr. Chris, and Ms. Reese.

Another big thank you to Ms. Gita for her work in arranging the hotel, buses and tours. I was very impressed by the commitment and positivity of our students, who represented ACG with pride throughout the Retreat.

Thank you as always for your support
