WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 16, Term Three, Week Five, 21 August 2020

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland I hope this latest edition of our newsletter finds everyone safe and making the best of this level three lockdown period.

At the outset, I would again like to compliment everyone for their commitment and dedication to this challenging period that we find ourselves in. We appreciate that having your children on a device for much of the day is not ideal. However the feedback has been almost universally positive, as parents try to get on with their working lives, with confidence that their children are being well catered for during this level three period.

Attendance levels have been quite incredible, with on average only three children being away from their device on any one day this week. Staff too are fully committed – doing quite experimental activities, keeping young minds engaged.

Special mention to Miss Davies this week who had her entire class dissecting a flower online.

Her students then took photos of the end result and posted online to share with the class.

Fantastic stuff.

You will have seen the Ministry offering all schools the opportunity to have senior students reenter the school in a bubble and carry on with some specialist classes. We have decided that Design/Tech was a good subject to trial this initiative and Mrs. Townshend will have her seniors in to school this weekend to carry on with their projects.

Mrs Chartrand held an assembly on Tuesday morning for the Primary school, and 80% of the students were in attendance – again, this displayed wonderful engagement.

This Friday afternoon the Government will be announcing their intentions post Wednesday next week. We hope to move down the levels; however this will of course depend upon the growth of the current clusters.

I wish to also thank my admin and teaching staff. If it wasn’t for these wonderful people, we would not be having the successes with our virtual learning programme which we are currently experiencing.

Mr Stephens and I have made some decisions with regards the mock examinations for the seniors, and at this stage they will be starting one week later than originally scheduled.

Other cancellations and postponements may be taking place and we will inform parents and students once these are confirmed.

Reports There will be no interim reports for Primary and Lower College this term. End of year full reports will be given out at the end of Term Four as usual.

Full reports for senior students this term will go ahead (but may be released during the holidays to get them completed with the delay of the mock examinations).

Our Primary students have been outstanding in their Zoom lessons. Following their regular timetable they are continuing to learn and engage with their teachers and fellow classmates.

Technology, 2-3SB Year 2 & 3 had started designing their weekly weather chart for recording their daily observation.

Mathematics, 1NC Year 1NC had fun learning how to read and write the time during their Mathematics lesson in Zoom. They also enjoyed singing the song “Telling Time�.

While our students may have to stay inside, it hasn’t stopped them from letting their creativity flow. Mr O’Connor has worked alongside our Year Ten students who have created their own music lyrics!

Movie Night Most of you know that we had a whole school movie

night on Friday the 7th of August to support Star ship. During the movie night, we had some amazing movies that were provided by the student leaders.

Primary watched Toy Story and College could either watch Crazy Rich Asians or Jumanji.

I attended the college movie night which was a big hit - especially the Jumanji movie. There was a decent range of snacks and drinks.

Butter popcorn and sweet and salty popcorn was there to accommodate everyone.

There were lolly bags, range of soft, hard, sweet and sour. Delicious lollies! They also had water and fizzy drinks. They had picked a pretty good movie full of funny, happy and sad moments.

My favourite part of the movie Jumanji, was when Brittany and Jeff join them in the movie, and they all go in and save Jumanji. It’s my favourite part because it shows good teamwork, good corporation and listing skills. In my opinion, I think it is the best part of the entire movie.

It was a great night full of laughter and grins on everyone’s faces. Everyone was smiling, laughing and having a good time with their friends and we definitely raised quite a bit of money for Star ship.

The Student Voice!

Jade quartet visit Recently, the Jade quartet, from the APO (Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra), visited our chamber orchestra in ACG Sunderland. Although they come every year to play compositions of our IGCSE students’, they were keen to have a special workshop wish our chamber orchestra which was formed last year. The workshop lasted for 2 periods to help us with our pieces so we could perform during assembly.

Each person from the Jade Quartet helped our players individually, so we ended up being very productive.

Thanks to Ms Adams, who was a past assistant concertmaster at the APO and our conductor of the day, we made an incredible amount of progress, and taking notes along the way.

When it was time for college assembly, we performed our three pieces: March in G by Bach, Rondo a Capriccio by Beethoven, and Hungarian dance no.5 by Brahms.

Ms. Adam even invited us to join the Aotea orchestra since some of us already was part of this group. We were all grateful since it would be a great opportunity for everyone in our chamber orchestra.

Overall, it was an amazing experience! The workshop helped everyone to improve in our skills and teamwork. The quartet musicians were very friendly, and we definitely hope to see them again.

Netball Cluster After weeks of training it finally arrived: the netball cluster.

Around 9am, we started out for TePai courts, we were able to walk there in approximately 10 minutes as it isn’t too far from our school. Year 7 and 8 went together where Mr Meadows was the coach for year 8 and Mrs Bradley, the coach for year 7.

The games ran on a specific timetable, so we began warming up at 9:30am. Keshalia and I as a captain and a player from the A grade club, began briefing the team about different strategies and scenarios that may occur during the game.

Soon it came time for our first game. Our positions were handed out and we prepared for the game. However something terrible happened. The team we were supposed to be versing showed up 8 minutes late.

The next game was better. It was a fairly easy team and we won by 15 – 0. There was now a short break where we ate lunch and shared improvements for the next game.

This repeated throughout the entire day and we didn’t lose any games! It was such a successful day of netball. By the end of the day, we were all exhausted and sore, and because of the lack of clouds and concentrated sun, some of us were even sunburnt; in the middle of Winter!

We made our way back to school and finished the day with one last period.

It was a very tiring, yet fun day. And our team did an incredible job. Everyone well done!

To our Auckland whānau With the change in COVID-19 alert levels to Level 3 across the Auckland region, the wellbeing of our community is paramount.

Practicing guidelines set jointly by the Ministry of Health and Dental Council of New Zealand state that all routine dental treatment should be postponed. Therefore, the Children’s Community Dental Service (Auckland Regional Dental Service) is only able to provide urgent and emergency dental care to children, once the child’s condition has been assessed by a dental clinician over the phone.

The Dental Council of New Zealand has further advised that if a child’s dental condition can be accurately diagnosed and effectively managed without needing to see the child in-person, then that is best. This means the child’s dental condition may be able to be managed with medication alone.

From 12 August 2020, we will have seven essential dental care clinics open across Auckland (please find the list below). Opening hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-4.30pm.

If your child is in pain or you have concerns about their teeth, please phone the nearest clinic to you from the list provided above. Alternatively, parents/caregivers can phone 0800 TALK TEETH. Our dental clinicians will be available to discuss your concerns with you and to make a plan for your child.

If you need to contact a health professional outside our operating hours, please phone Healthline on 0800 611 116.

We kindly request you do not present to the clinic unless you have phoned the clinic and have been offered an appointment. Please note that we are required to ask COVID-19 pre-screening questions prior to all children and their whānau attending an appointment in our dental clinics.
