For over a century, many significant Hispanic Aviators have called the United States home. Here are a few of their stories.
Olga E. Custodio was the first Hispanic female military pilot. In 1981 she received her wings and became a T-38 instructor pilot. She retired from the Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in October 2003. Custodio was also one of the first Latina commercial airline pilots and flew a variety of aircraft, including the Boeing 727 and 757.
Freddy has been with Atlas Air for 11 years and is entrusted to carry out SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) amongst the pilot workforce by conducting Annual Line Checks for Captains and train new hires so they can be line qualified pilots.
He has been interested in aviation since he was a child. He and his father attended air shows together. He flew for the U.S. Air Force from 1997 until his retirement in 2020 as Lt. Colonel.
He is Mexican American and one of approximately 50 first cousins with over 30 Tios and Tias. “If I were to describe my culture or my family in one or two words, I would say “hard working.” His family includes farmers, teachers, law enforcement officers and members of the military.
He is the first pilot in his family and drew his inspiration from his family and their achievements stating it helped keep his dream alive.
“There’s a lot of love, support and pride from my family that continues to motivate me to be better than I was the day before and not to give up. Following this support, I try and give back to others as much as possible.”

The first Mexican woman to earn a commercial pilot’s license and fly a jet was Berta Zeron. She obtained her private pilot’s license in January 1965, logging 200 hours in the Cessna 170. Additionally, she was an expert sky diver.
Alberto Braniff was the first to make a powered flight in Mexico. He was sent to study in Europe where he caught “aviation fever” and became interested in aviation. Back in Mexico in 1910, Alberto made his first short flight in a Voisin Airplane. Not only was this the first flight in Mexico, most believe it was the first flight in Central or South America.
Mexico is a country with an incredibly rich aviation heritage that many Americans are not aware of.
One of the earliest Hispanic American aviators is Augustin Parla. Parla was born in Cuba but immigrated to the United States during the Spanish American War. He learned to fly at the Curtiss School of Flying in Miami in 1912 and only a year later became the first man to fly from Key West to Florida. He also inaugurated the first commercial flight in Cuba.

The George McClellan Foundation, along with other companies, sponsored a Back to School Drive in August collecting school supplies, backpacks, uniforms and slightly used clothing. Houston’s IAH and Corporate locations participated.
Team MCO (Orlando) collected school supplies to donate to a local community school. Teachers are often left to buy missing classroom supplies out of pocket. Team MCO collected enough to help supplement at least 3 classrooms!
