Erstmals begeben wir uns mit dieser Ausgabe aber auf eine Reise durch ein für uns Automobilisten vollkommen fremdes Land. Ein Land, das, ganz ehrlich, bis vor Kurzem nirgends auf unserer Bucket List stand. Wir haben zusammen schon die eine oder andere Kurve hinter uns, in Thailand dabei aber zum ersten Mal das Gefühl, unserem Titel vollkommen gerecht zu werden: Mehr CURVES haben wir auf keiner anderen Reise erlebt. Nicht in den Alpen, nicht in den Pyrenäen, nicht in Schottland oder bei der Überquerung von Rocky Mountains und Sierra Nevada, auch nicht auf Mallorca oder Sizilien. Dass wir ausgerechnet in Thailand auf Straßen getroffen sind, deren Kurven-pro-Kilometer-hoch-Straßenzustand-Koeffizient bei einer unschlagbaren Elf von Zehn Punkten lag, hat uns regelrecht erschüttert.

Und natürlich: begeistert! Aber auch das Soulful Driving ist in Thailand atemberaubend hochdosiert. Es gehört neben den Kurven genauso auch zum Reisen, zum Unterwegssein, zu den Menschen, zum Land, zum Essen. Thailand hat Seele.

A land that, to be perfectly honest, featured on no bucket list of ours until very recently. Our journeys have already covered all sorts of curves. However, we feel that Thailand is the first place to truly do justice to our title. Never, on any of our trips, have we ever encountered so many CURVES. Not in the Alps, not in the Pyrenees, not in Scotland or when we crossed the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. And not on Majorca or Sicily either. We were utterly stunned to come across an unbeatable coefficient of curves-per-kilometre to road quality that scored eleven out of ten points – and in Thailand of all places. Obviously, we were over the moon! But Thailand is also packed with a breathtaking level of Soulful Driving. It’s not just about the curves. It’s about the journey, traveling, about the people, the country, the food.

Gute 700 Kilometer weit führt die erste Etappe im Nordosten Thailands aus der Provinzhauptstadt Nan in die Nationalparks zwischen Laos und Myanmar. Prägend für diese Route ist das nahezu vollkommene Zurückgeworfensein auf packende Kurvenstraßen in hügeligem oder gar gebirgigem Terrain, schnurgerade Meilenfresser-Straßen sind hier nur in den von Nord nach Süd verlaufenden Flusstälern zu finden.

Aus der Provinz Nan wechseln wir hinüber nach Phayao und folgen ein Tal weiter dem nach Süden strebenden Fluss Wang in Richtung der Provinz Lampang. Um weiter nach Westen zu gelangen, müssen wir aber erneut ins Gebirge, überqueren den südlichen Ausläufer der Khum-Tan-Kette bis in die Hauptstadt des Nordens, Chiang Mai. Von hier aus geht es weiter nach Osten ins Tongchai-Hügelland bis zum nach Myanmar fließenden Fluss Pai. Erst hier schließen wir unsere erste Etappe im Hochland Thailands ab.

Pai ist die größte Stadt des Nordwesten Thailands, hinter ihr erstrecken sich Bergketten in kaum zu erfassenden Ausmaßen, die Grenze zu Myanmar strebt von Osten heran und schwenkt nördlich von Pai mit dem Gebirge nach Süden. Wir fahren hinein in ein Land, in dem es nur wenige Straßen gibt, folgen erneut einer unfassbar kurvigen Route in weitem Nord-West-Süd-Bogen, der dem Grenzverlauf zuerst folgt und ihm dann immer näherkommt. Kurven sind der wesentliche Aggregatzustand dieser Etappe, erst dicht an der westlichen Grenze von Thailand zu Myanmar beruhigt sich die mächtige Fahrt etwas und läuft sanft aus, während der Grenzfluss Moei neben der Straße nach Süden kurvt. Rund 140 Kilometer weit schnürt die Straße in Richtung Mae Sot, dort biegen wir entschlossen nach Osten ab. Über die Nationalparks Taksin Maharat und Lan Sang rollen wir in Richtung des Chao-Phraya-Beckens, das wir am Ping-Fluss endgültig erreichen. Von hier aus sind es weitere 500 Kilometer zum Etappenziel in Khon Kaen, die wir aber lustvoll verlängern: Weitere Vorstöße in die südlichen Bergausläufer locken, sodass wir das zentrale Flachland Thailands nicht queren, sondern an seinem Rand entlang in Richtung Osten fahren.

The first stage in the northeast of Thailand is a good 700 kilometres, from the provincial capital of Nan into the national parks between Laos and Myanmar. What makes this route stand out is the almost complete throwback to intensely absorbing winding roads through hilly or even mountainous terrain. Mile after mile of arrow-straight roads exist here only in the north-south river valleys. We cross from Nan Province to Phayao and follow the valley of the southward-flowing Wang river heading for Lampang Province. To travel further to the west, however, we have to drive into the mountains once more, crossing the southern foothills of the Khum Tan range to reach the northern capital of Chiang Mai. From here, the route takes us east into the hill country of Tongchai as far as the river Pai, which flows into Myanmar. It’s not until here that we complete our first stage in the Thai highlands.

Pai is the largest city in the northwest of Thailand. Stretching beyond it are mountain ranges of almost unimaginable proportions. The border with Myanmar approaches from the east, veering southwards with the mountains to the north of Pai. We drive into a land of very few roads, following yet another inconceivably winding route in a huge north-west-south arc that starts off running parallel with the border, then draws closer and closer to it. Curves are the main constituent of this stage. It’s not until close to the western border between Thailand and Myanmar that the heavy driving eases off somewhat, petering out as the border river Moei curves its way southward next to the road.

The road snakes for another 90 miles or so towards Mae Sot, where we turn resolutely to the east. We cruise via the Taksin Maharat and Lan Sang national parks towards the Chao Phraya basin, which we finally reach on the Ping river. The end of this stage is still 300 miles away in Khon Kaen, but we’re happy to extend that, tempted by further forays into the southern foothills. Instead of cutting through the flat land of central Thailand, we drive eastwards along its edge.

By the following morning, Thailand is well and truly in your veins. The lively, sensuous and relaxed groove of this land is infectious and overwhelming. The road leaves Pai heading northwards, sweeping intoxicatingly once more over the mountainous highlands, and this time it takes just a few miles for you to come to a realisation: When you first set off, you exchanged a few eager words with the Thai friends enthusiastically leading this trip. Standing in open car doors, grinning at one another and throwing half-sentences back and forth like balls, someone says: “I would love to go to Europe, to Germany, to the Nürburgring.” You’re still laughing and throw back a: “Sure, consider yourself invited” – and this brief dialogue keeps coming back to you, like a needle stuck in groove.

Nürburgring. Nürburgring. And there it is in front of you, road 1095 dashing like a dervish through the hills, sweeping, leaping, flying.

And your hands and feet are going like mad, working the steering wheel, gas pedal, gearstick and brakes. Nürburgring. The road sails out ahead in a long, sweeping bend, through a dip and careering towards a hill rising up in front. It floats for a moment, with honey-like consistency, in the apex of a curve, opens up, closes, surrounded by mountains in every shade of green and covered by all manner of vegetation, before falling over a crest into the valley below. A squeal of joy courses through your body, but you’re way too old for that kind of thing. You opt instead for: “Ha!” And think: Nürburgring. I would love to go to the Nürburgring. It lasts for a few more bends, but then the penny drops:

Der Rundgang über den Markt scheint am Ende nur wenige Minuten gedauert zu haben, so wild und bunt und intensiv ist diese nächtliche Parallelwelt voller Leben. Wenn du dann aber vollgepumpt mit Eindrücken und pappsatt den Rückweg ins Hotel antrittst, ist es schon spät. Es müssen Stunden gewesen sein, die du in dieser Straße verbracht hast. Am nächsten Morgen hast du Thailand endgültig in deinen Adern. Der lebendige, sinnliche und entspannte Groove dieses Landes ist ansteckend und überwältigend. Die Straße verlässt Pai nach Norden, turnt wieder mitreißend schwungvoll über die Berge des Hochlandes, und dieses Mal dauert es nur wenige Kilometer, bis du eine Offenbarung hast: Noch bei der Abfahrt hast du mit den Thai-Freunden, die die Reise schwungvoll anführen ein paar erwartungsfrohe Worte gewechselt. In der offenen Autotür stehend, Halbsätze wie Bälle hin- und herwerfend grinst ihr einander an und dann meint plötzlich jemand: „Ich würde so gern nach Europa fahren, nach Deutschland, zum Nürburgring.“ Du lachst noch, wirfst ein „Na klar doch, die Einladung steht“ zurück – und dieser kurze Dialog kommt nun immer wieder vorbei, wie die im Schallplattenkratzer hängende Nadel. Nürburgring. Nürburgring.

Gerade jetzt fegt die Straße 1095 wie ein

a fine grate then drizzled with sweet sauce, rolled and chopped onto banana leaves to be sold freshly made and piping hot. Street musicians drum, whistle and chirp next to grilled corn, while spring rolls sit alongside spicy noodle salad hoping for a long life – but never growing older than a couple of minutes.

If all this has made you thirsty, you can find refreshment in coconut water or a herbal brew served in bamboo tubes three fingers thick.

This parallel nightlife is so full of life, so vibrant and colourful and intense, that the tour of the market only seems to take a few minutes. But when you make your way back to the hotel, pumped full of sights and sounds and stuffed to the brim, it’s already late. You must have spent hours in this street.

Plastikbecher wie eine saftige Verheißung: Erdbeeren und Mangos, Papaya und Ananas, gelbe Wassermelonen, grüne Orange, Banane und Drachenfrucht, Litschi und Longan.

Natürlich kommen Süß-Esser auch anders auf ihre Kosten: Kinder drängen sich mit weit aufgerissenen Brombeer-Augen an Ständen, die in Schokolade getunkte Marshmallows feilbieten, die Erwachsenen landen nebenan. Hier entstehen aus schwarzem Reis, Zuckerrohr und Sesam dunkle Fladen, die auf einem feinen Gitterrost gebacken werden, dann mit süßer Soße beträufelt, gerollt und kleingeschnippelt auf Bananenblättern landen, dann ganz frisch und heiß ausgegeben werden. Straßenmusikanten trommeln, flöten, zirpen neben gegrilltem Mais, Frühlingsrollen hoffen neben scharf gewürztem Nudelsalat auf ein langes Leben – und werden doch nie älter als ein paar Minuten. Wen das alles durstig gemacht hat, der erfrischt sich mit Kokosnuss-Wasser oder einem Kräuter-Sud, der in drei-Finger-dicken Bambus-Röhren gereicht wird.

Nürburgring. Nürburgring.

Gerade jetzt fegt die Straße 1095 wie ein

Plastikbecher wie eine saftige Verheißung: Erdbeeren und Mangos, Papaya und Ananas, gelbe Wassermelonen, grüne Orange, Banane und Drachenfrucht, Litschi und Longan.

Natürlich kommen Süß-Esser auch anders auf ihre Kosten: Kinder drängen sich mit weit aufgerissenen Brombeer-Augen an Ständen, die in Schokolade getunkte Marshmallows feilbieten, die Erwachsenen landen nebenan. Hier entstehen aus schwarzem Reis, Zuckerrohr und Sesam dunkle Fladen, die auf einem feinen Gitterrost gebacken werden, dann mit süßer Soße beträufelt, gerollt und kleingeschnippelt auf Bananenblättern landen, dann ganz frisch und heiß ausgegeben werden. Straßenmusikanten trommeln, flöten, zirpen neben gegrilltem Mais, Frühlingsrollen hoffen neben scharf gewürztem Nudelsalat auf ein langes Leben – und werden doch nie älter als ein paar Minuten. Wen das alles durstig gemacht hat, der erfrischt sich mit Kokosnuss-Wasser oder einem Kräuter-Sud, der in drei-Finger-dicken Bambus-Röhren gereicht wird.
