MURIEL VERBIST Almost all architecture is designed on commission for a client; the architect’s design must always bend to the demands of that client. The situation is turned on its head, however, when the architect becomes their own client. The architect suddenly has the freedom to give full expression to his/her vision on living. This book contains 17 such visions: 17 extensive reports on the lofts, apartments or houses where leading Belgian architects such as Bob Van Reeth, Peter Swinnen and others live. Each report is accompanied by a text in which the architect expounds his/her own vision on architecture.

ISBN: 9789460580765 280 x 230mm. 240pp. 204col. October 2011 £35.00 Hardback

MURIEL VERBIST The book offers an inside view of the merchant houses, apartments and lofts of various creative people from a fabric designer to a theatre director. The interiors often represent a mix of various styles from the antique to the contemporary: old-style elements from days gone-by such as wainscoting or ceiling cornices are retained but given more modern colours, often in combination with contemporary design. The featured interiors offer a very personal insight into the lives of today’s creative Bruxellois. Alongside photographs of inspiring interiors, the inhabitants also reveal their favourite locations in Brussels.

Past In Present is a book for lovers of interior design, architects and restorers; the exceptional photography shows both interiors and particular workshops, illustrating the perfect combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Past In Present is a lavishly illustrated and luxurious book full of inspiration: the book shows interiors from all over the world and gives extra information about such applied disciplines as restoring, furniture making, patinating and forging. The interiors show a great love for tradition in a modern setting. In addition, the book also contains cultural and art historical information, which places the interiors in an historical frame. Thong Lei and Anne Noordam are the founders and owners of Decoration Empire, a company specialising in interior architecture and building restoration that follows up interior design projects in the Netherlands and abroad. With a team of highly skilled workers, Decoration Empire focuses on the use of carefully selected materials, traditional techniques and art.

Shades of Grey

WIM PAUWELS

REMY MEIJER

Designing and furnishing a house is not a process that stops at the back door. What happens in the garden is just as important and carries on from the style adopted indoors. Design-oriented outdoor furniture has become as important as indoor furniture, and several famous brands (B&B Ialia, Gervasoni, MDF Italia, Meridiani, Paola Lenti, Piet Boon Zone, Gervasoni, Extremis, a.o.) have launched wonderful outdoor series over the past few years.

Remy Meijer is a rising star in the world of interior design. Meijer is devoted to functional designs that support and improve the quality of life, making his designs balanced, almost sober and transparent. He uses tactile materials such as wood, steal, glass, stone and terrazzo whilst incorporating the building’s original character, fitting in authentic elements in a contemporary interior design. Remy Meijer’s Shades of Grey contains an overview of his most beautiful projects, amongst which a Rietveld bungalow, a monumental canal side house, a country estate by the Vecht river, a beach house on the Dutch island Ameland and two showrooms for fashion shops.

Outdoor Living showcases a series of stunning outdoor projects – projects designed specifically to extend the inside, outside. Text in English, French and Dutch. Beta-Plus ISBN: 9789089440990 340 x 270mm. 200pp. 200col. September 2011 £75.00 Hardback

The buildings of Mughal India constitute one of the world’s greatest architectural traditions. Whether it is the Taj Mahal in Agra, the Red Fort in Delhi or the palaces of Fatehpur Sikri, these and other similarly wellpreserved monuments of the 16th and 17th centuries testify to the refined taste and unlimited resources of a line of powerful patrons, notably the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Mughal architecture is a remarkable hybrid that fuses building forms, techniques and decorative schemes imported from Iran and Central Asia with longestablished Indian materials and techniques. The results are both structurally innovative and aesthetically spectacular, a testament to the genius of Indian masons and craftsmen. The first comprehensive survey of the subject in more than 20 years, this lavish volume documents nearly 100 Mughal sites and monuments in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Mughal Architecture & Gardens is enhanced by over 250 stunning colour photographs by Amit Pasricha, one of the most talented architectural photographers working today. His photographs are accompanied by over 80 specially commissioned building plans and site layouts. Sumptuously illustrated with a text by renowned architectural historian George Michell, this book is of interest to students and scholars as well as travellers and general readers. George Michell is an architectural historian, specialising in ancient Indian architecture.

Ocean Liner Posters

VINCENZO SGUERA

GABRIELE CADRINGHER

Free DVD included for Windows and Mac - Vector and Bitmap Hi-res files, ready for production

Ocean Liner Posters tells the story of shipping companies and their ships through the art they produced - their posters. For a century, ocean liners were the only way to travel from one continent to another. Millions of passengers travelled on transatlantic routes: millionaires, occupying luxurious suites with dream decors, signed by the best artists of the time, and emigrants in search of a future, meagre savings in hand, huddled in third class - all sharing their journeys with tourists, soldiers and traders on the largest form of transportation ever built.

Just as with its popular predecessor, volume two of the Ethno Pop Textures series offers a wide array of bright, beautiful graphics ideal for adding an ethnic feel or splash of bohemia to any given project. Combining earthy textures drawn from cultures across the globe with the immediacy of modern pop culture, the graphics supplied in this book offer limitless creativity. Antique Collectors’ Club

Includes 100 designs on th DVD, saved in 5 ways 500 files in all - all free to use Grunge Textures Volume 1 offers a wide array of graphics inspired by the realist, casual feel of the 1990s grunge scene. Grunge ran against the grain of the flashy aesthetic that existed in the 1980’s, bringing with it irregularity and imperfections that identified its perpetrators as highly original. The graphics offered in this book capture this aesthetic and are ideal for adding an ‘indie’ feel to any given project.

This book charts the evolution of ocean liner posters from the first ship poster reproductions of the latter part of the nineteenth century, when the vessel's image appeared alongside information about the routes taken, through the Art Nouveau era, when the image of the ship began to take a key role in terms of visual importance. The Art Deco period allowed masters of poster art such as Adolphe Mouron Cassandre to create enduring works for the likes of Normandie or the Atlantique. The book continues tracing the timeline of these posters, through the postwar period until the demise of transatlantic routes, through to the sixties, which saw the poster being modernised.

Railway Posters THIERRY FAVRE Railway Posters is the story of train travel through the posters of American and European railway companies. The inventive graphics created by the poster artists convey the excitement and nostalgia that accompany today’s perceptions of train travel; taking the reader on a journey from their first experience of trains as miniature sets in their family home to the necessity of train travel in their adult life.

Crazy Art will be a revelation to anyone who thinks that art is more or less limited to painting, sculpture and photography. The title features the work of more than sixty contemporary artists drawn from all over the world, demonstrating that there are absolutely no boundaries to expressing the most inventive and exciting ideas through a vast range of different media and materials. Five chapters pitch well-known artists - such as Carl Warner with his bizarre “foodscapes”, or Nathan Swaya, creator of Brick Art, and Larry Moss with his famous balloon sculptures - alongside young practitioners like Pei-Sang Ng, an artist whose stunning matchstick designs burn brightly but all too briefly. Each artist and subject receives a short introduction, whilst illustrations and detailed descriptions provide insight into their most important, individual and creative works of art. From Food Art to Body Art, Junk Art to Street and even Dust Art, Crazy Art brings their original, radical and provocative ideas to life. Website links guide the reader toward more information on the artists, their work and the galleries or museums that give them patronage.

It gets harder every year. Finding something new and unusual for that close friend’s birthday, or searching out an original present for a dear old uncle (surely, not socks again). You want to give them something different; you want to surprise them with something individual and interesting. Crazy Gifts could be your salvation. It’s an inspirational sourcebook for present givers, designers and style-conscious consumers, packed with fantastic gift ideas, from the practical (think self-heating baby’s bottle) to the cutely quirky (pop art toaster anyone?) and downright clever (how about a swimming mask that shoots video?). Sections on kitchen gifts, well-being, games, gadgets, home, techno and fashion contribute to an indispensable compendium of new ‘stuff ’. Some gifts, like the snake-shaped LED bench, stand out for their design qualities, whilst others, such as the massaging head spa that relieves the symptoms of migraine, have proven health benefits. Website listings guide you through to the right stockists for each of the almost 200 featured items, whilst the Crazy Gifts’ multiple indexing system allows you to search for a gift by genre, recipient, occasion or price.

The projects in this book are simple enough for the complete beginner with clear instructions and tips on basic techniques. The designs are deliberately chosen so that even a novice will be able to achieve a good finish and ensuring that “home-made” is something smart and even chic and not a term of abuse. Divided into 7 chapters, each chapter is introduced with an opener with a photograph (showing one or two projects and possibly some materials) and a “mission statement”. Under each category there will be advice on materials, techniques and tips followed by ideas and some specific projects, all accompanied by lots of illustrations. This is a book for all ages and for everyone who has wanted to try their hand at craft.

The development of textiles as an art form between 1945 and 1970, and the extent of collaboration between artists and textile manufacturers at this time, is unrivalled in modern art history. Raoul Dufy was the first twentieth-century artist to become seriously and successfully involved in producing textile designs. His work influenced and encouraged many other artists and textile companies in Britain, on the Continent and in America. After the war this movement really flowered with the involvement of leading artists of the day: Picasso, Matisse, Moore, Nicholson, Warhol, Steinberg, to name a few... This book is an important and comprehensive survey of this art form in Britain and America. There are approximately 200 colour images, many of which have never been seen before, alongside specially commissioned photography.

A Front Row Seat KIRSTIN SINCLAIR A rare glimpse into the life of the people setting the trends and making the fashions Presents seven years of documentary catwalk shots from New York, London, Milan and Paris Key icons from the fashion industry; Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer but also the newcomers such as Agyness Deyn, Lily Cole, Gareth Pugh, Scarlett Johanssen Through a series of candid photographs taken over the last 7 years covering all the different elements that make up the catwalk shows - Backstage, Front Row, Catwalk and Street Style - the uninitiated viewer will get an insight into the chaos that makes up the apparently glamorous world of fashion shows! Unlike many shots from the shows published in women’s fashion magazines, this book allows the reader to be a fly on the wall, portraying the reality of the fashion world in a documentary style. Featuring quotes from several industry professionals and reporters- make up artists, hair stylists, models, editors, designers and bloggers- this title communicates in a contemporary vernacular to capture the way that fashion is expressed and recorded in today’s world of social networking and blogging, the popularity of which has instigated a huge change in the layman’s ability to break into the fashion world. Firmly in tune with the current vibe and with a definite London edginess, A Front Row Seat is a sensational design statement in itself. Published to accompany an exhibition at The Fashion and Textile Museum. Eleanor Lambert

Il Costume Antico e Moderno

Still Here

Di Tutti I Popoli Della Terra

JOHN TIFFANY

GIULIO FERRARIO

An extraordinary look at dazzling fashion photography, accompanied by their never-before-seen original press releases written by the legendary Eleanor Lambert herself

Showcases the most complete iconographic collection on ancient fashion

Often referred to as the Empress of Seventh Avenue, Miss Lambert, up to the time of her death at the age of 100, looked the part with her trademark turbans and oversized jewellery. Her barrage of news releases and enthusiastic work as a publicity agent did much to further the careers of numerous American designers, among them Norman Norell, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Halston, and Anne Klein. She single-handedly created The Best Dressed List, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the COTY and CFDA Awards, and the original Fashion Week. Eleanor Lambert: Still Here is the definitive monograph on the achievements of the extraordinary woman who changed fashion history, putting American fashion on the map in a culture once wholly dominated by European design and traditions. Written through the eyes and experiences of John Tiffany, who not only worked for Miss Lambert but who has access to a trove of archival materials that have never been published before, this book will provide all of the fashion-obsessed with behind-the-scenes accounts of a woman who gave life to the industry as we now know it.

After one hundred and fifty years, this book, one of the most beautiful Italian pieces of work from the 19th century, is to be published again. This monumental classic started off as an in-depth historical and geographical description on global costume accompanied by a review of the uses, customs, art and architecture, climate, religious ceremonies, war preparations, theatre, music and dance that influenced life and style. The book builds a precise identity for each continent, and within each continent, a profile of each country - showing not only the fashion and dress styles in the very broadest sense - but also the traditional costumes of each town. This volume is both a companion to the search for quality craftsmanship and an attempt to share the experience of a philosophy of production that is exquisitely Italian, the essence of Italian history and culture, the cult of knowledge combined with skill. The book is organised as a reference work in alphabetical order: each heading and each letter details the names of the craftsmen, their trade names and place of origin. The book’s agile structure and stimulating contents makes cross-referencing easy and encourages random reading, without compromising the clarity and at-aglance comprehension. No mere almanac, but rather a reflection on the great contemporary debate on craftsmanship.

Vivays Publishing ISBN: 9781908126078 270 x 210mm. 192pp. 215col. August 2011 £19.95 Hardback

This beautifully illustrated book shows examples of Russian dress and accessories from the 15th to the early 20th century. Derived from the collection of the State Historical Museum and covering both dress worn in the countryside and in the city, this book is a fabulous feast of splendid patterns and fine detail. From exuberantly colourful and embellished dresses to elegantly sumptuous brocades and silks, the garments and accessories included in this book are an inspiration. In the first part of the book we look at traditional Russian dress, which was worn by all Russian peasants, by the urban petit bourgeoisie and by merchants. This type of clothing became accepted as national dress. In the towns and cities, dress was influenced by the Parisian styles but interpreted by Russian seamstresses reflecting the love of bright colours, multi-coloured patterns and decorative features in evidence in traditional dress. With authoritative essays written by experts L.Yefimova and T. Aleshina, Russian Elegance is an invaluable resource for fashion designers, artists, fashion historians, set and costume designers, or anyone interested in these beautiful designs.

A PREFACE BY

ABDELWAHAB MEDDEB

Tangier: the gateway to Africa. The city’s rich cultural heritage goes back more than three thousand years, influenced by the Orient as well as by the Occident.Tangier’s reputation has always been mysterious and has attracted not only the famous personalities who settled there in the 1960s; photographer Amsel and writer Florian Vetsch fell for the city’s charms, too. Their fascination for the Moroccan seaport has lasted for many years. Throughout that time, Tanger Trance has developed, with photos and texts that illustrate the intense encounter between the cultures. Amsel, born in 1961, is a photographer and Master of Advanced Studies in German Language and Literature Studies and Psychology at the University of Zurich. She works as a photographer and author and divides her time between Zurich, Switzerland and Tangier, Morocco. Florian Vetsch, born in 1960 in Buchs, Switzerland holds a PhD in German language and literature studies, philosophy and literary criticism at the University of Zurich. He works as a professor, author, translator and editor of American Beat literature and has translated Paul Bowles, Ira Cohen and many others. He is also a publisher of numerous books and articles. He lives in St. Gallen, Switzerland and Fes, Morocco.

CharlElie’s second volume of photography on New York proves the continued inspiration the city has on the artist: New York is the city where anything is possible. CharlElie’s tribute to this takes us through the city’s streets, skyline and people to reveal his intense vision of New York.

Dark Beauty FOREWORD

45

Dark Beauty features over one hundred photographs by Jack Parsons of New Mexico, culled from his favourite scenes shot over the last twentyfive years. From images of small towns and lonely plains, mountains, rivers, fiestas, and murals to old adobe houses, crumbling walls and dirt roads in Santa Fe,Taos, and elsewhere, it presents a very personal, elegiac vision of the state where he has made his home since the 1970s.These photographs reveal a deep understanding and reverence for a place whose complex, rich history, unique multiculturalism, and unparalleled beauty continue to captivate residents and tourists alike. Although an experienced cinematographer and director, Jack Parsons is most famous for his elegant book photography. In recognition of his contributions, he was honoured in 2006 with the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Arts. Frederick Turner has written ten books and edited three on the history of the American Southwest and is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and The Guggenheim Foundation.

Includes groundbreaking analysis of Mulas’ work and the role of photographic documentation Features reportage of a key exhibition featuring the most representative artists of the Italian art scene of the Sixties Johan & Levi ISBN: 9788860100610 290 x 240mm. 208pp. 135b.&w. June 2011 £55.00 Hardback

The exhibition Vitalità del negativo nell’arte italiana 1960-1970, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva in 1970, was a key retrospective of the Italian art scene, involving the most representative artists of the Sixties. Ugo Mulas portrayed the artists and their artworks, but this was not just a simple reportage. This book bears witness to the development in those years of a common horizon between artists and photographers thanks to the notion of documentation and its potential to inform and represent. In the images the space and time of the exhibition are transformed and the photographic recording breaks the event down into fragments of a memory. This is what determines the relationship between art and photography and structures the book; Vitalità is the point of arrival on a path that spans the whole of Mulas’ career as a photographer and critic, the crux of a dialectic between event and representation and that culminates in his last great work, the Verifiche.

Nomad is an impressive photography book which presents the harsh lives of nomads. It studies the very essence of nomadic life worldwide. The photographs by Jeroen Toikons, award winner of the first prize “Zilveren Camera” (“Silver Camera”) in 2009, are the result of 12 trips he made to the most distant places on earth. With his project “NomadsLife”, he tries to capture the traditional way of life of nomads in pictures - for as long as this is still possible that is, since urbanisation, globalisation and climate change endanger the lifestyle of these people. Locations: Mongolia, Russia, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan,Taiga area, Finland, Alaska, Greenland. Text in English and Dutch. Lannoo Publishers ISBN: 9789020995985 280 x 230mm. 208pp. 100col. 80b.&w. Communism and its fall had a worldwide impact, but none felt the changes more than the previously Soviet states. In 2007 and 2008, photographer Nick Hannes travelled across the 15 former Soviet republics and took pictures of the different consequences of the breakdown of the Soviet Union in 1991.This publication includes intense photography of a developing region full of contrasts: extreme wealth amidst poverty; golden statues of new dictators in cities of concrete and shows how much change has already occured and how much is still to come, with experienced photographer Nick Hannes’s poignant images.

The oeuvre of Tony Le Duc, a pioneer in the area of international food photography, proves that photographs of vegetables, pig’s cheeks or bouillabaisses can be given a personal touch. With a play of light, colour, texture and intensity, he creates compositions that toy with the line between photography and art. And that is precisely Le Duc’s great achievement: he goes beyond the advertising gimmick of drawing attention and temptation to a search for the essence. In this book, you can find a top selection of a quarter-century of food photography from his hand. Text in English, French and Dutch.

Eugène Atget

In Good Light PHOTOGRAPHS INTRODUCTION

BY BY

ROGER EBERHARD KAREN SINSHEIMER. ESSAY

Paris 1898-1924 BY

BERNHARD SCHLINK. French photographer Eugène Atget (February 12, 1857-August 4, 1927) was best-known for his incredible photographs documenting the architecture and street scenes of Paris. This book showcases the images he captured between 1898 and 1924 - images of the ‘old Paris’, represented with an almost surreal, dream-like quality. He photographed the Seine, the streets, the incredible architecture and the façades of buildings and palaces, the courtyards, apartment interiors, stairwells, parks, shop windows and the urban environment - replete with street traders, fairgrounds and prostitutes - building an enormous artistic documentary collection of the French capital. The book has been published to accompany an exhibition organised by the Mapfre Foundation in collaboration with the Museum Carnavalet in Paris that will travel to the Fotomuseum of Rotterdam and the New Gallery of Sydney.

Eberhard has gained recognition through solo and group exhibitions in the US and Canada and though his earlier book Calla (Modernbook Editions, Palo Alto, 2007) and Wilted Country (Scheidegger & Spiess, 2010)

A celebrated photographer for 40 years, Ellen Graham has worked with magazines across America, photographing some of the world’s most talked-about people: actors, artists, performers, socialites, and the glitterati that we are all obsessed with. Graham’s images strike a balance between the glamour of a formal Hollywood photo shoot and the intrigue of a tabloid exposé for a true intimate look at such legendary figures as Frank Sinatra, Natalie Wood, Warren Beatty, and Carrie Fisher. Whether shooting actors, performers, or European royalty, she redefines the resonating myths that have come to surround these figures. Talking Pictures brings together over 200 images culled from Graham’s work for such magazines as People and Time, her personal archives, and her collection of family photographs, accompanied by a personal narrative that takes you behind the scenes of each celebrated image and breathes life into the glamour of Hollywood’s golden age.

As an effect of the recent economic and financial crisis in the USA, a vast number of people have suddenly lost their jobs and income and often also their home. Many of them still live in their cars or even just in the streets. In spring 2007, the young Swiss photographer Eberhard began talking to some of these homeless people and invited them to his studio to take a portrait of them. He paid them a fee and built a relationship with these individual personalities that can be traced in his photographs. Eberhard’s In Good Light series shows a sensitive and respectful approach to difficult situations of life in which these people find themselves, in most cases through no fault of their own, sometimes by their own choice. They are impressive personalities who have kept their dignity and show great power despite the struggle of living on the edge of society. Eberhard’s images are complemented in the new book by an introduction by curator Karen Sinsheimer and a literary essay by the celebrated German novelist Bernhard Schlink. Text in English & German.

Sleepers Benteli Verlag

A completely new presentation of this internationally important collection of photographs Following on from the publication of the first six titles featuring The Library of Congress’ internationally renowned collection of Farm Security Administration (FSA) and Office of War Information (OWI) photographs, the Fields of Vision series continues with images showcasing the work of Arthur Rothstein, Gordon Parks and Carl Mydans. Providing a unique view of American life during the Great Depression and Second World War, each Fields of Vision volume includes an introduction to the life of the photographer by a leading author or journalist, and 50 evocative images selected from their work.Transporting the viewer to American homes, farms and streets in the 1930s and 1940s, they also offer a glimpse of a new narrative and intimate style that was later to blossom on the pages of LOOK and LIFE magazines. For many Americans of the pre-television age, the diversity and complexity of their country was defined by the lenses of these men and women.

Gotthard Schuh is regarded as one of the most important European photographers of the 20th century. A pioneer of modern photojournalism, he also developed a personal style that might be described as 'poetic realism'. Schuh understood that the photographic view of the world is inevitably subjective, and that the photographer must lose himself in the moment in order to capture it intuitively. This book accompanies an exhibition that will be the first and largest devoted to the work by the Swiss photographer in Spain (Fundación Mapfre, Madrid.

Reverse Motion is a composition of fragments of return from memory and of leaps in flight from the present towards an unfathomable future. A composition of instants gathered together, of snapshots drawn from real personal lived experiences: faces beloved and interested, materials depicted with their significance instantaneously fixed, portrayals of faces ever present and immortalised by the light of memory, which also holds and restores the nuances of the past.

ET AL.

The worker-photography movement remains a difficult, still-pending chapter in the history of photography, a kind of 'missing link' in our understanding of how photographic modernism evolved over the course of the 20th century. This book and accompanying exhibition is intended to rectify this shortcoming, by recognising the central role the movement played in the photographic debates occurring between the wars. Text in English and Spanish.

VINCENT MEYLAN Includes excerpts from the Boucheron ‘Book of Stones’ - an archive of every precious stone that has ever passed through the Boucheron safe, including the famous Donnersmarck,Wittelsbach blue and Polar Star diamonds Each stone has a detailed description as well as a sketch and any history regarding its ownership. There is also a section dedicated to design sketches from throughout Boucheron’s history Frédéric Boucheron opened his first jeweller’s shop in Paris in 1858. Unlike his rivals, many of Boucheron’s early clients were not society ladies, but women of the demimonde. His skill with precious stones, magnificent jewellery creations and his absolute discretion about his clients soon made him a favourite with courtesans and princes alike, and created a business that remains strong to this day. For nearly 150 years the records of all sales transactions had remained hidden and all but forgotten in the Boucheron safe.Vincent Meylan has carefully researched this unique source of documents: registers and correspondence, drawings and photographs, to tell the fabulous story of the the founder of this famous and respected Parisian jeweller as well as the tales of passion, crime and intrigue of his famous and infamous clients: La Païva,Tsar Nicholas II, the Duke of Windsor, King Farouk, the Maharaja of Patiah, the Vanderbilts and the Rothschilds, Sarah Bernhard, Rita Hayworth, Edith Piaf… Courtesans, royals, multimillionaires, Hollywood stars, all had a passion for precious stones, and their fabulous orders created the Boucheron legend, which is told here alongside original design sketches, black and white archive images and sumptuous colour photographs of the exquisite Boucheron creations, including the Queen Mother’s tiara and the Tsarina Alexandra’s pearl and diamond coronet.

On Jewellery explores different themes, such as Conceptual Jewellery, Jewellery and Photography, Borderline Jewellery and the Language of Jewellery. It deals with assumptions, definitions, prejudices and claims, to take up a position and with the aim to describe the field in its full richness, and within the context of society and fine art. The book covers the period from the late 1960s until the present day with examples chosen from all around the world. Jewellers today have the potency and feel the need to express themselves in a large range of different mediums. The use of traditional materials, techniques and methods, once questioned, has now become a matter of content and conceptualisation. New techniques have also become available, like video, book, or performances that are used to unveil mechanisms, and to research and reflect on jewellery as a social, emotional and artistic phenomenon and as an everyday object. This is a synopsis of what art jewellery is or can be, that aims to disclose its idiosyncrasies, language and potency.

What is jewellery? This new publication is a reflection on that question. Here is an interdisciplinary approach transcending the familiar categories crafts or art, applied or fine. What matters here is exploring what jewellery is - not what it looks like. Thinking Jewellery is the distilled result of a colloquium with the same title that has been jointly hosted since 2005 by the Idar-Oberstein course in gem and jewellery design by Trier Polytechnic and the city of Idar-Oberstein. Each year in May more than a hundred jewellery designers, students and academics from all over Europe convene in Idar-Oberstein to conduct a comprehensive discourse without boundaries on the theoretical foundations of jewellery. This publication contains the most interesting lectures given over the five years since major artists in jewellery, distinguished ethnologists, philosophers, psychologists, cultural anthropologists and scientists instituted the Colloquium. Lavishly illustrated to showcase the objects discussed, it documents the standards so spectacularly achieved by the Idar-Oberstein Jewellery Institute. Thinking Jewellery fascinatingly exemplifies the productive interaction of theoretical reflection and practical execution. Text in English & German.

It also includes contemporary pieces and, overall, provides an exhaustive history of the tiara.

This work is intended to give the reader an insight into the furniture of the Lesser Antilles, and its place in the changing politics and history of these Caribbean islands. The inspiration for this book came initially from the collection formed by the author’s mother, Dorothy Sturm, in Trinidad, during the years between 1939 and 1981. As Philip Sturm became increasingly involved with the responsibilities of caring for the family collection as well as being a keen collector himself, he discovered there were no books on the subject. He was obliged to rely on his own general knowledge, local information, an art and history background and many hours spent in the libraries and archives of Trinidad, Barbados, St. Kitts, and the Virgin Islands. Even this produced very little information, the only references coming from advertisements of furniture on packets arriving in the harbours, or from house auction sales. Accordingly, he resolved to draw upon his own experience and conduct his own detailed and lengthy researches into this hitherto neglected subject. The author hoped, above all, that his book would stimulate an interest in young West Indians to preserve their furniture heritage and keep it within the islands or return it to the West Indies when found elsewhere. He also hoped it would lead to a wider appreciation of West Indian craftsmanship and the abilities of indigenous furniture makers.

Sir Charles Jackson’s English Goldsmiths and their Marks is the classic reference work on British antique silver hallmarks. First written in 1905 and last revised in 1921, it is a mammoth endeavour which has remained in print ever since. It is still considered indispensable by silver collectors and dealers, despite shortcomings due to its age. This edition has been compiled by a team of distinguished experts to take account of the vast store of information which has been unearthed as a result of much detailed and wide ranging research over the last seventy years. The 1921 text has been extensively updated with over 10,000 corrections and an enormous amount of entirely new material. For example, there are over 1,000 corrections to London eighteenth century makers’ marks alone. Many ideas and attributions have changed since Jackson assembled his work and some of the makers he overlooked are now known to be of major significance. There are not many standard reference works which survive for eighty years without being displaced. This reprint reconfirms Jackson’s status as the bible for all antique silver enthusiasts and a key reference for dealers, scholars and collectors.

Gallé The Furniture of Emile Gallé 1884-1904 ALASTAIR DUNCAN AND GEORGES DE BARTHA The emergence in recent years from their original homes of many of Gallé’s deluxe furniture commissions - seemingly lost forever - provides today’s connoisseur with the opportunity at last to examine and assess the Nanceien’s work in this his third artistic discipline, cabinetmaking. Included for the first time under one cover are all his major works of furniture, both those he designed as unique pieces for an exclusive clientele and those he displayed at two World Expositions and at the annual Paris Salons between 1889 and his untimely death in 1904. Included also in these pages is the encyclopedic range of models created in the Gallé workshops both during his lifetime and then well into the 1920s. Presented by furniture category - wardrobes, tables, dressing tables, desks, commodes, consoles, etc. - the seemingly infinite number of different furnishings that bear the Gallé imprint overwhelms the reader in their diversity.

In Wilfried Moll’s objects you can sense the very development process- in which time is slowed down. “For me, there’s no wasted time”, says the artist himself. And so works including silver objects, cutlery and also jewellery have developed over the years, which are comprehensively presented for the first time in this publication. Many leading museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired his works as ‘exemplary examples’ for their collections. Since 1965 there has been a kindred sentiment to his life partner, the jewellery artist Gerda Moll. Next to clarity and stringency, lightness became the most important characteristic of her rings, pendants and necklaces. She abandoned decor completely; the modular parts of her jewellery pieces comply with ornamental working series- thus fulfilling the function of the jewellery. For the first time and in large format illustrations this publication presents the work of the silversmith Wilfred Moll. Juxtaposed with the jewellery objects of Gerda Moll, the timeless beauty of both works in unveiled. The prolific interaction between the enduring artists and life partnership over the last nearly fifty years becomes apparent. Text in English & German.

Flemish 17th Century Lacquers WILFRIED DE KESEL Seventeenth century Flanders was a cultural hotspot for both the fine and decorative arts. With well established ports in Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent, it became an important transit region for both the export of local produce and the import of highly ornamental luxury products and valuables, such as lacquer boxes and ornamental lacquer cabinets imported from the Orient. These oriental high-gloss items, richly inlaid with wood and intricate mother of pearl motives, were built to stand the test of time. As the demand for these luxury items increased, Flemish craftsmen mastered the skills and techniques and created their own lacquer tradition. They didn’t merely imitate Oriental lacquer decoration, but designed a peculiarly Flemish lacquer style that has long been overlooked in art history. Stichting Kunstboek ISBN: 9789058563736 300 x 245mm. 96pp. 200col. September 2011 £29.50 Hardback

This is the first comprehensive book on 17th century Flemish lacquer works and an in-depth study to help preserve the skill and the survival of this part of Flemish cultural heritage.

Silver Triennial International 16th Worldwide Competition EDITED

BY

CHRISTIANNE WEBER-STÖBER

A survey of current international tendencies in silversmithing The presented works are characterised by highest quality, unusual combination of materials and an outstanding design The silver objects on the ceremonial table rank among the visual highlights. With technically mastered and creatively worked silver, this ‘supreme discipline’ is a centuries-old tradition. In order to give the tradition renewed stimulus, the Silver Triennial 2010 is being held by the Association for Goldsmith’s Art, now for the 16th time; 158 artists from 20 countries are taking part in the competition; 83 of these participants and their outstanding works will be presented in this publication. ‘International’ signifies a global review of the outstanding achievements from Europe, Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea,Taiwan and the USA.The selection was chosen by an independent jury. In a world of mass consumption, everyday silver objects created by hand, such as tankards, bowls, candlesticks, vases, cutlery and also artistic statements with no utilitarian purpose whatsoever, meet a circle of interested people, who seek the individual who delights in the inimitable sheen of silver and who values its unique quality. The ‘scene’ also has its stars. For Hiro Suzuki, Tokyo/London, the play with the material is absolute priority. The artist expresses his creativity with silver and thus develops his large vessels with no designs or models in a direct challenge with this precious metal. The silver Triennial has been organised since 1965 by the gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst (Association for Goldsmith’s Art) and the Deutsches Goldschiedehaus Hanau (German Goldsmith’s House) to promote contemporary silversmithing.Through national and international exhibition programmes, it has become recognised worldwide.Text in English and German.

Artemisia Gentileschi (Rome 1593-Naples 1652/53) was one of the few successful female painters of the Sixteenth century. She was adopted by the feminist movement as a standard-bearer and through a distorted psychoanalytic reading she was believed to be exacting her revenge through her cathartic brushstrokes, transforming herself into Judith slaying Holofernes/Agostino Tassi. Her paintings, along with those of her father were exhibited in Florence, Rome, New York and Saint Louis. The exhibition planned from September 2011 to January 2012 in Milan aims to, at last, make amends for the unfair favours attributed to her otherwise excellent father and will provide the visitor with each essential knot in the pictorial evolution of his vibrant and chameleon-like daughter. This book, along with the exhibition, will finally allow the reader and viewer to draw their own conclusion.

A survey of the visual imagery on Chinese ceramics - beauty and meaning

The exhibition of the same name opens at the Ashmolean Museum in October 2011

Most Westerners love and enjoy the decorations on Chinese ceramics for their sheer beauty. But for the Chinese, there is more than beauty, there is meaning. This meaning is hidden in a symbolic language of auspicious signs. By ‘reading’ the meaning of the design, a process of interaction takes place between the viewer and the object, a most important element of appreciation of art in traditional China. Ten Thousand Times Happiness presents about 80 masterpieces of Chinese porcelain (12th-18th centuries) from the Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, the National Ceramic Museum of the Netherlands and the Ottema-Kingma Foundation. It will be the first time that a collection of Chinese ceramics is interpreted by explaining the ‘hidden’ auspicious meaning of their decorations. This is destined to become a reference work for years to come, introducing the most important and interesting pieces from the Princessehof collection and at the same time serving as a ‘handbook’ for Chinese symbolism and iconography. Publication accompanies an exhibition at the Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, from 24th April 2011.

Claude Lorrain is known as the father of European landscape painting. His influence has certainly been enormous, not only with regard to the art of his immediate followers but on European landscape painters throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The impact of his art has been felt particularly in Britain where eighteenth and early nineteenth-century artists, collectors and connoisseurs contributed to a ‘Cult of Claude’ which has left a lasting effect on British attitudes to the countryside. The exhibition will include all Claude’s prints and about fifty drawings. There will be about a dozen paintings, chosen not only for their poetic beauty, but because they reveal some aspect of his thoughts about the nature of art. These paintings represent his work across several decades, ending with his last painting, the magical Ascanius and the Stag of Sylvia which ranks among the most important paintings in the collection of the Ashmolean.

Painter and draftsman of animals for Louis XIV, Pieter Boel (1626-1674) is now widely recognised as one of the best animal painters of the past. This large-size book presents 40 paintings and drawings of this extraordinary observer of nature. His pieces were particularly lively because he was inspired by the living birds and mammals he was able to observe in the Versailles Menagerie, established by Louis XIV in 1664 and soon a model for all the European courts. The studies were used as models for animals reproduced in the foreground of the famous Gobelins tapestries, which decorated several royal mansions. They are replete with details of the animals, seen from different viewpoints, and are admired for the quasitactile rendering of fur or feathers. The drawings included show Boel’s keen eye for rendering movement.

This book focuses on the many forms of communication that existed in seventeenth-century Dutch society between family members, lovers, and professional acquaintances, both present and absent. The forty-four carefully selected Dutch genre paintings include major works by many of the finest masters of the period, including Johannes Vermeer, Pieter de Hooch, Gerard ter Borch and Gabriel Metsu.Vermeer’s three masterpieces about love letters form the core of the exhibition as they are profound examples of the power of communication. Dutch artists of the seventeenth century portrayed the wide range of emotions elicited by the various forms of communication, not only in the manner in which they render gestures and facial expressions of personal interactions, but also in the ways in which they show men and women responding to the written word. The painters often introduced objects from daily life that had symbolic implications, among them musical instruments, to enrich the pictorial narratives of their scenes. Published in conjunction with the exhibition Communication: Visualizing the Human Connection in the Age of Vermeer (2011-2012), which celebrates the 400th anniversary of the diplomatic exchanges between Japan and the Netherlands, this book connects the pictorial and the literary aspects of Dutch cultural traditions during the Golden Age.

This is effectively a historical journey through the works of the great 19th century Spanish masters from Goya through to Sorolla, stopping off on the way at artists such as Fortuny, Rosales and the Madrazos. The works are selected as prime examples to reflect the progression in styles of the 19th century schools.

Leonard Russell Squirrell RWS RE

Monet at Giverny

East Anglian Artist 1893 - 1979

CAROLINE HOLMES

69

JOSEPHINE WALPOLE Claude Monet spent the last 43 years of his long life at Giverny, creating the paintings and gardens for which he is now revered. From the standpoint of his garden this book considers the controlling intelligence behind both landscape and art, and the influences that shaped Monet’s life and vision. The artist is shown as a consummate plantsman who composed his gardens with an Impressionist’s care for colour and form, reinterpreting its motifs in paintings of power and abstraction.

Leonard Squirrell RWS RE (1893-1979), the ‘Grand Old Man of East Anglian Painting’, was known and loved by many people well outside the boundaries of East Anglia and admired by many more as an outstanding topographical artist. Ranked by many collectors and connoisseurs with John Sell Cotman, Thomas Girtin, Philip Wilson Steer (who taught him) and other famous East Anglian artists, his works are not only eminently collectable but, as pointed out by Michael Weaver in his foreword, ‘a remarkable record of the twentieth century world, rural and urban landscapes that have disappeared or are rapidly vanishing’. Antique Collectors’ Club ISBN: 9781851496662 280 x 235mm. 128pp. 93col. 66b.&w. September 2011 £25.00 Hardback

While the author’s earlier titles on the artist were appropriate at the time of their publication in the 1980s and ‘90s, it was felt that now was the right time to publish a larger format volume with more colour images so that Squirrell’s paintings could speak for themselves. It is hoped that this volume will remind previous Squirrell admirers of his work as well as show a new generation of art lovers what Leonard Russell Squirrell was and what he did.

The first extensive study of Colleen Browning’s life and work produced over her 50-year career

All of the sixty icons are accompanied with discussions of their symbolic meanings and detailed images of each icon are included

Colleen Browning (1929 - 2003) was a pivotal realist painter and of the few women to achieve national recognition for a genre dominated primarily by men. Since childhood, Browning had the desire to be a painter. She attended London’s Slade School of Art from 1946-1948, and had her first solo exhibition at London’s Little Gallery when she was 20 years old. She moved to America in 1949 from Ireland, and felt immediately at home in New York City; making it her home for the next five decades. A major figure in the realist movement during the 1950s, she drew on the inspiration and direction she received from the already established realist artists Joseph Hirsch, Ben Shahn, and George Tooker. Browning has a distinct brand of figurative painting, with subjects ranging from worshipers in a Guatemalan church to graffiti- covered Harlem subway cars to still life compositions. Her work is largely recognised for its superior command of materials and media and for her unwavering devotion to understanding the human condition. She was a prominent contributor the realist revival of the 1990s as she continued to paint until the very last years of her life.

We are proud to offer this important book on icons dating from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. These sixty icons from the Kolomenskoye State Museum are presented with full descriptions of their origins and symbolic meanings written by a leading specialist in Old Russian art. This lesser-known collection shows the evolution and development of Russian iconography through its themes, styles and details - for example, historical figures such as Peter the Great featured in the battlefield on one of the intercession icons. These images are at once powerful and moving, engaging the observer in the story depicted in the painting or drawing the eye to a face that seems to look directly out at the viewer. This book provides a fascinating insight into the world of the mysterious and beautiful icons. This book is a valuable resource for art historians, scholars of religious practice, and collectors of icons.

FRANCO BERTONI

This is the first complete overview of Bervoets’ unique pictorial graphic works, from 1990 until the present. Fred Bervoets, a member of the art collective “De Zwarte Panter” (“The Black Panther”) is considered to be one of Belgium’s most important painters. Since the early nineties, Bervoets’ oeuvre has undergone a strong moderation, expressed in huge etchings. These are made in a “wrong” etching technique that was invented by Bervoets: he does not use an etching bath, but scratches the drawing immediately on a sink plate.

Giampaolo Bertozzi and Stefano dal Monte Casoni have been working together since 1980. Masters of doubt, they present works that are iconographically improbable but highly credible because of their powerful presence and disturbing allusions. They communicate with one another and alternate in a constant play of references, staging a representation whose ostentation is worthy of the grand baroque or melodramatic theatre, and whose clarity of language is equal to the calculated verbal engineering of the weightiest narrators of the past century.

ESSAYS BY CARTER RADCLIFF, JOYCE KOZLOFF, ROBERT KUSHNER, GOERGE FRANCIS, LINDA DALRYMPLE HENDERSON AND TONY ROBBIN Kaleidoscopic, intricately layered and colourful,Tony Robbin’s paintings have explored the boundaries of mathematical space in art for more than forty years. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of physics and maths Robbin’s paintings achieve a boundless effect: the spatial fourth dimension is attained through his interplay of grids, manipulation of structures, and his use of color and form across the canvas. This book chronicles the artist’s remarkable forty-year career.

In 2009, the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur in Switzerland purchased a hardly known collection of photographs of and drawings by Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). It comprised highly revealing and in its vast majority previously unpublished material of great interest. The photographs were taken by various photographers, including celebrated artists such as May Ray, Henri Cartier Bresson and Cecil Beaton. They show Giacometti as a young artist bursting with energy during his first stay in Paris and at work at his legendary studios in Paris and his native Val Bregaglia in Switzerland; lighthearted in company of his wife Annette or in discussion with friends; posing with his sculptures and in silent dialogue with his models. Others allow glimpses into the deserted studio or show Giacometti’s works. The drawings are mainly sketches on pages of newspapers and magazines. The entire collection adds new aspects and surprising facets to our idea of the artist and person Alberto Giacometti. The Unseen Giacometti documents this treasure with 160 illustrations, comments and essays on selected aspects. Text in English & German.

Practices of Experimentation Research & Teaching in the Arts Today EDITED BY DEPARTMENT OF ART & MEDIA, ZURICH UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS. COMPILED BY CHRISTOPH BRUNNER AND GIACO SCHIESSER.

The Watson Gordon Lectures typify the longstanding positive collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and the National Galleries of Scotland. The fifth lecture was given by Hal Foster of Princeton University. His wide-ranging lecture on Roy Lichtenstein is a gripping engagement with the multiple aspects of the artist’s work: the conjunctions of art and technology, the satirical playing with previous modernist styles, and the sinister background of the military-industrial complex.

Practices of Experimentation investigates how the different fields of fine arts, photography, media arts and theory interlace with each other, inspire and differentiate one and another. The book presents 15 positions in text, image, video and sound by theorists and artists. They enquire how practices of experimentation constitute one of the most advanced approaches to research and teaching in arts worldwide. Old Issues and New Problems

FRANCESCO BONAMI

EDITED

This catalogue shows a select sample of works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection, a result of the personal involvement of its founder, Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, whose vision and drive to discover young contemporary artists dates back to the 1990s, with the aim of showcasing them to an increasingly wider audience. The book features 124 of the most important and representative works of the Collection, produced by nearly 70 artists and depicting different expressions of art.

The droit de suite or Artist’s Resale Right became the law in Italy on 9 April 2006.The major art markets, United States, UK and France had already assessed the economic effects of this right. This book tackles the complex issues surrounding this law; almost four years after the law was passed, in Italy the Associazione Nazionale Case d Asta decided to sum up the situation. The results of their research is published here.

This collection of twenty-one essays in honour of Professor Barend Jan Terwiel deals with a wide range of issues spanning various periods of time, both modern and pre-modern, in countries throughout Southeast Asia. The contributors have been inspired to challenge and unravel established paradigms of this diverse region's history and in doing so propose new insights and interpretations.

Chinese classical poems are an international culture code in East Asia. Many diverse factors account for the phenomenon of cross-cultural merging in this region. Using works from the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, this catalogue concentrates on the classical Chinese poetry that Japanese and Korean elites learned and then applied to their own arts. The aristocracy first introduced the aesthetics of painted poetry and focused on specific images illustrated through a diverse range of media from painting to ceramics.

JAMES WILKINSON WITH A FOREWORD BY HRH THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Europe’s fascinating history is brought to life in this highly accessible and stimulating book

Written by an author who attended the Coronation, with first-hand anecdotes from others who also witnessed this historic occasion

Books about Europe are often dull manuals written for insiders working within the Euro bubble. This book is something different. It tells the story of Europe through an account of the decisive moments in its history. Its account of the 50 days that changed Europe gives readers a keyhole view inside meeting rooms in elegant châteaux while eavesdropping on the key decisions taken over the past 53 years. The book shows with poignant clarity how Europe has been shaped, not by anonymous technocrats but by fallible human beings in moments of intense pressure. It reveals the failures, the crises and the blunders but also the extraordinary achievements such as the abolition of border posts, the reunification of Germany and the introduction of the Euro. It is an inspiring book for all Europeans and a telling illustration for other countries who aspire to the European model.

HISTORY & BIOGRAPHY

This stunning book is Westminster Abbey’s official publication on this Royal Wedding and is a unique and unrivalled souvenir to the momentous occasion, which took place on the 29th April 2011 in one of the most famous buildings in the world. It showcases photographs of the wedding exclusive to the Abbey, plus a selection of the best press photography; gives an authoritative account of William and Catherine’s friendship and subsequent engagement; and includes an overview of other Royal Weddings held at the Abbey. In the last 100 years, Westminster Abbey has played host to ten royal weddings, including those of The Duke of York to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (who became George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother) and The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, to Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten. The coronation of every crowned monarch has taken place in the Abbey since it was built by Edward the Confessor on the site of a former monastery in the 11th century - the first that of William the Conqueror in 1066 and the most recent that of William’s grandmother Elizabeth II in 1953.

The Queen’s Coronation, on 2 June 1953, should have been celebrated in blazing sunshine. Instead, the grey dawn heralded one of the coldest June days in years, and it poured with rain. But the enthusiasm of the hundreds of thousands of people who lined the streets waiting to see The Queen, many of whom had come from abroad, was undimmed. The processional route to and from Westminster Abbey was hung with colourful decorations and lined with miles of special seating. The Mall, in particular, was spanned by huge arches, from which hung golden crowns. In addition to those who witnessed the spectacular ceremony in the Abbey or who camped out on the processional route, millions around the world watched it on film or television. Six years before her Coronation,The Queen said: ‘I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and to the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.’ It is a pledge she has upheld. This book looks back to that Coronation Day and, with the help of those who were there, tells the inside story of the planning and preparations for what was the best-organised and most widely witnessed Coronation in history. James Wilkinson has been associated with the Abbey since he was a chorister there in the early 1950s; in 1953 he sang at The Queen’s coronation. He is now one of the Abbey’s Honorary Stewards. He has written several other books about the Abbey. Scala Publishers ISBN: 9781857597356 210 x 210mm. 64pp. 50col. October 2011 £7.99 Paperback

Despised by the senior ranks of the Church of England, he was welcomed in high political places throughout the world. This biography reexamines his extraordinary life and career on the 80th anniversary of his appointment as Dean of Canterbury.

Italian Villas’ Gardens and their Flowers

Generale e Particolare

EDITED

GEORGES-LOUIS LECLERC

BY

LUCIA VALERIO

This book, commissioned by Acqua di Parma, is a tribute to the Italian-style garden, part of Italy’s historic heritage. The book has been edited by Lucia Valerio, the well-known journalist, head of the gardening section of the magazine VilleGiardini. One of Italy’s most authoritative garden designers, architect Paolo Pejrone, dedicates his section of the book to the irises, magnolias and jasmines which inspired Acqua di Parma’s ‘Le Nobili’ line of perfumes for women. Meanwhile, François Demachy writes about the same flowers from the point of view of making perfume. The gardens represented, many of which can be visited by appointment, include some of the villas around Lucca such as the Villa Marlia, some of the De’ Medici villas and others now owned by the FAI, such as the Villa del Balbianello on Lake Como. Many of the photographs come from the archive of Dario Fusaro, the renowned landscape photographer. The gardens are shown at their best, in various seasons, with vast expanses of flowers and stunning colors. This book is a valuable source-book for those who wish to learn more about the Italian-style garden and its relationship with the world of perfumery. Text in English and Italian.

BUFFON

First published in the mid-eighteenth century, this book brings together the original work by a great French scholar - Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon - founder of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. Included here are the so-called Suites à Buffon, on oviparous animals, snakes, fish, worms, insects and botany. These sections are then followed by the remaining species from the animal and vegetable kingdoms, composed after the death of Buffon by his students and successors, the greatest specialists in each of these disciplines at the time. The collection, as the author himself affirms about his work’s premise, “offers the reader an exceptional multitude of quadrupeds, birds, fishes, insects, plants and minerals and is an immense and infinite delight for the curiosity of the human spirit”. Text in English, French, Italian and Spanish. Congedo Publishing ISBN: 9788896483046 430 x 300mm. 448pp. 408col. September 2011 £43.50 Hardback

A Year in the Garden

PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

BAE BIEN-U

JEREMY FRANCIS Through the eyes of the Korean photographer, Bae Bien-U, this catalogue discovers the beauty of two ‘soul gardens’:The Alambra and Generalife and the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung. Bae Bien-U’s photographs reflect the sublime beauty of both locations: they capture the magnificent dialogue between nature and architecture as well as the solemn atmosphere of these places of soul. Bringing together the photographs Bae Bien-U took at the Alhambra and Generalife complex with the photographs taken at the Changdeokgung Royal Garden in Seoul invites contemplation about connections between the Eastern and the Mediterranean soul. The presentation of these photographs of immense poetic density and clarity will increase the awareness of the inner beauty of the treasures of Granada. The temples of Cambodia are among the most complex and imposing architectural creations in the world, offering nothing less than the embodiment of Khmer culture. Organised chronologically, this book opens with the modestly scaled brick structures of the 7th and 8th centuries and goes on to explore the first monumental temple mountains of the 9th century. Also examined are the technical advances enabling the fulfillment of a unique Khmer architectural vision in the 10th century, and the erection of the ambitious Baphuon temple mountain in the 11th. All this sets the stage for the apogee of the Khmer empire in the 12th century, and with it, the construction of three massive temple complexes: Beng Mealea, Bakan, and the supreme architectural creation of Cambodia, Angkor Wat. In this book, not only do Barry Brukoff ’s photographs record temples that have been destroyed or vandalised but they offer a uniquely intimate insight into the Cambodian idiom. The viewer is drawn into the picture plane and can sense the interior wonders of the monuments, so that for the first time a two-dimensional expression succeeds in invoking the third, in inviting the reader to penetrate to the heart of the temples’ mystery.

With this book, Kate McBride invites us to journey with her as armchair travellers through 84 poems and more than 200 Polaroids. The painterly, almost ethereal look of the images and the poetic record of a place and time create what McBride describes as “dreamscapes”.The lines and the snapshots evoke the cities, colours, people and smells, from Paris to the Pacific Ocean.
