Ida A. T. Bronken

ISBN: 9781909492981 Price: £49.50, October 2023 In this volume, the author investigates the phenomenon of soft and dripping paint found in 20th century oil paintings – a challenge for both the conservator and curator. The constituents of the paint used by various 20th century artists are examined together with particular artists’ working habits and the locations and conditions in which they produced and kept their works. The main focus of study is 23 paintings by members of the Cobra and Art Autre groups, who were active in the 1950s and 1960s and it seems that their common links to Paris, pollution and high humidity may be important factors in artworks displaying soft paint.

NEW RELEASE

SUMMER 2023

ISBN: 9781909492943 Price: £47.50, May 2023

Written by Richard Gameson, Andrew Beeby, Flavia Fiorillo, Catherine Nicholson, Paola Ricciardi and Suzanne Reynolds With contributions from Mila Crippa, Anna Mazzinghi and Lucia Pereira-Pardo

The practice of using lacquer to form Buddhist sculptures dates back several hundred years with the earliest known sculpture associated with the late sixthcentury Sui dynasty (581-618 CE) shortly after Buddhism came to China. Very few of the often life-size or larger sculptures remain. For the first time in this volume, Buddhist lacquer sculptures and their place in Buddhist practice are discussed holistically by scholars from a range of disciplines. Research on scientific, art historical and historical aspects of the sculptures opens a window into the sculptural lacquer techniques used in their creation. These proceedings, and their companion symposium, coincided with the exhibition, Secrets of the Lacquer Buddha. This is the sixth in an ongoing series of publications of Forbes symposia proceedings. All six volumes are published by Archetype Publications in association with the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution.

This comprehensive and richly illustrated volume is the first-ever history of British medieval illuminators’ pigments. It rests on first-hand investigation, with optimal scientific techniques, of a wide selection of manuscripts, ranging in date from the seventh century to the fifteenth. It provides an authoritative, engaging and accessible guide to this understudied field, for historians, art historians, librarians, conservators, heritage scientists, and anyone interested in the art, culture and techniques of book illumination.

The Wall Paintings of Bamiyan, Afghanistan Technology and Materials Yoko Taniguchi and Marine Cotte ISBN: 9781909492899 Price: £55.00, December 2022 The site of Bamiyan in Afghanistan site has suffered numerous disasters throughout its history which have resulted in the loss of many of its cultural treasures, especially many of the Buddhist wall paintings which contain/contained much of the history of painting techniques. In spite of these losses, the authors of this volume discovered, in a cave in Bamiyan, the oldest example of the use of oil-based paints in the world dating back to the mid-7th century. This book presents important data collected through chemical analyses aimed at determining the materials and techniques used in the Buddhist wall paintings at Bamiyan. The results of these studies are discussed from a broad perspective, addressing the cultural interactions between the geographical east and west of the Eurasian continent.

Contributions from world-renowned scientists describe the latest advancements in the role of microorganisms in the degradation, treatment and protection of cultural heritage materials and objects including ceramic tiles, stained glass, stone and wooden buildings, paintings and library materials. These developments range from the use of third-generation sequencing to detect organisms that are present in the microbiome of colonized parchment, to the ecological approaches being used to investigate microbial colonization of archaeological sites, to the use of bacteria to clean wall paintings. To conclude each section, we have included a synopsis of current research illustrating recent developments.
