En especial, el barrio Santa Ana es sede para maestros que trabajan en negocios familiares. Es el caso del clan Oncebay, que teje desde 1870. Santa Ana neighborhood in particular is where craftsmen with family businesses are based. One of these is the Oncebay clan, who have been weavers since 1870. procesiones, carreras de caballos de paso, encierro y mucha comida. Y ya que la artesanía va de la mano de la tradición, no podía faltar la presencia de la cerería o ‘arte efímero’ de la mano de Teodomiro Camiña Galindo. “Muy niño empecé haciendo flores de cera y velas. Me enseñó mi papá”, comenta. “Lo que sé lo he enseñado a mis 4 hijos y a 12 nietos”. Pero Ayacucho se caracteriza de manera especial por la tradición del bordado. En especial, el barrio Santa Ana es sede para maestros tejedores, quienes trabajan en negocios familiares. Es el caso del clan Oncebay, que lo hace desde 1870. En los talleres textiles hay generalmente una pequeña tienda o galería abierta al público, así como un jardín interior donde hay plantas aborígenes tintóreas como el nogal, la cochinilla y el molle, entre otras. Ya quedan muy pocos grupos dedicados a las frazadas ayacuchanas, pues casi todos trabajan en los telares murales decorativos –principalmente réplicas de

And since handicrafts and tradition go hand in hand, the chandlery or ‘ephemeral art’ of Teodomiro Camiña Galindo is on display then, too. “I started out when I was a very young child, making wax flowers and candles. My father taught me”, he comments. “I’ve passed on everything I know to my four children and 12 grandchildren”. But Ayacucho is especially noted for its embroidery tradition, and Santa Ana neighborhood in particular is where master craftsmen with family businesses are based. One of these is the Oncebay clan, who have been weavers since 1870. The textile workshops generally have a small shop or gallery that is open to the public, plus an interior garden where native plants are grown for their dyes, such as walnut, cochineal and the pepper tree. textiles preincas wari, paracas, nazca y chancay–. Las fibras que utilizan son algodón, alpaca, llama y oveja. Desde la década sesenta, los artesanos se han preocupado por rescatar los tejidos tradicionales con sus colores y motivos. Sobresalen los patos, los zigzags, las franjas y, particularmente, la paleta de color negro, marrón, beige, blanco y gris. En los ochenta y noventa, se elaboraban tapices testimoniales: jóvenes mujeres con trenzas, otras migrando de la sierra hacia la capital, así como máscaras, queriendo dar la espalda a la violencia. En esa época, la familia Oncebay se dedicó a entender y recrear técnicas desaparecidas, para que los originales –antiguos– no fueran vendidos y se pudieran conservar en los museos o colecciones particulares. El maestro Alfonso Sulca confirma su compromiso de seguir tejiendo para continuar fortaleciendo la riqueza cultural del pueblo. Además, este esfuerzo crea cada vez más nuevos puestos de trabajo, sin costo alguno para el gobierno. Genera divisas y convierte al visitante o comprador en un difusor de la cultura local.

mostly pre-Inca Wari, Paracas, Nazca and Chancay replica textiles. The fibers they use are cotton, alpaca, llama and lambswool. Craftsmen have been taking a special interest since the seventies in rescuing traditional fabrics, with their colors and motifs. Notable among these are ducks, zigzags, borders and, particularly, the black, brown, beige, white and grey range of colors. Testimonial tapestries were woven in the eighties and nineties: young women with braids, others migrating from the Sierra to the capital, and masks, symbolizing the fact that they were turning their backs on violence. It was during this period that the Oncebay family devoted itself to understanding and recreating long-lost techniques, so that old originals would not be sold and could be preserved in museums or private collections. Master craftsman, Alfonso Sulca, confirms his commitment to go on weaving in order to continue enriching the town’s culture.
