Pope Francis honors martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador After years of stagnant discussion over honoring martyred bishop Oscar Romero in the Catholic Church, things suddenly moved very quickly. The urgency began when Argentinaʼs Jorge Bergoglio became Pope Francis in 2013. Two years later, he beatified Archbishop Romero, who was gunned down in El Salvador in 1980. On Sunday, Romero was one of six to be canonized as a saint in a ceremony led by Pope Francis in St. Peterʼs Square. Romero has been considered a national hero and a champion of peace and human rights in his native El Salvador for years. His grave in the Cathedral of San Salvador is a place of pilgrimage for many Latin Americans. When Romeroʼs canonization was announced, El Salvadorʼs president, Salvador Sanchez Ceren, was clear about the significance of the moment: "Latin America finally has a saint! May his example help bring change to our country."

Saudiʼs ʼDavos in the Desertʼ hit by cancellations over Khashoggi case Company leaders are backing away from the Saudi-organized business conference after the mysterious disappearance of a prominent Saudi government critic. Virgin group even halted talks for a $1 billion investment. British billionaire Richard Branson announced on Thursday that his Virgin group would suspend its discussions with Saudi Arabiaʼs Public Investment Fund (PIF) over a planned $1 billion investment in the groupʼs space ventures. Branson also said he would suspend his directorship in two Saudi tourism projects around the Red Sea, citingthe disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi as the reason for his decision. "What has

reportedly happened in Turkey around the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, if proved true, would clearly change the ability of any of us in the West to do business with the Saudi government," Branson said in a statement. Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who lived in self-imposed exile, is reported missing after he was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Turkish officials allege he was murdered. They also claim they are in possession of audio and video recordings that would show a Saudi security team detained Khashoggi before killing him and dismembering his body. Saudi officials say Khashoggi left the building unharmed.

How the UK slowly turned against single-use plastics The first thing you notice about Tynemouthʼs beaches is how clean they are. The minute your dog delivers an unexpected "parcel" that ruins the view, at least two fellow walkers will approach you, proffering bags to clean it up. The village, which sits, as the name suggests, on the mouth of the Tyne river in northeast England, is serious about the pristine condition of its beaches and bays. Residents and visi-

tors take part in regular group and individual — or two-minute — beach clean-ups. Tynemouthʼs dedication to a litter-free coastline hasnʼt gone unnoticed. At the start of 2018, it became the first community in the area and the second nationwide to be awarded "plastic free" status as part of a campaign by the green charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). Thereʼs also good reason for Tynemouthʼs dedication.

Portugal issues red alert for rare Atlantic hurricane Hurricane Leslie has left 27 people injured in Portugal, as high winds and rain brought down trees and cut power. Authorities urged residents in the capital, Lisbon, along with central and northern parts of the country not to venture outdoors, after 27 people were injured. They also warned of possible flooding in coastal areas. Dozens of people were forced to leave their homes, and a number of flights were canceled. "I have never seen anything like it," one witness told SIC television in Figueira da Foz, 200 kilometers north of Lisbon, adding that several cars had been damaged there by falling debris.
