German beer producers running out of bottles With the summer heat leading to increased beer consumption, some breweries in Germany complain about lacking enough bottles and crates. Beer packaging, it seems, is a recurrent, long-term problem for the industry. The Fiege brewery in the western German city of Bochum has a problem. Although business is booming in this hot World Cup summer, itʼs struggling to find enough bottles to put its beer in. So Fiege has launched an urgent appeal to consumers via Facebook. "We need

your help," the brewery wrote. "Although we regularly buy new empty bottles, theyʼre becoming scarce in our bottling facility. So before you go on summer holidays, please bring your Moritz Fiege empties back to the shop. First the deposit, then the party!" Reusable beer bottles carry a deposit of eight to fifteen cents ($.09-0.18) in Germany, but thatʼs not always enough to motivate people to lug empties back to stores when the mercury rises and they could be, among other things, drinking beer.

Why are there so few insects at sea? Over a million different insect species have been identified — they can be found in the icy cold of the Antarctic, the searing heat of the Sahara Desert and almost everywhere in between. But despite their tenacity and abundance, the one place youʼll find very few insect species is near water. Of the classified insect types, only 30,000-40,000 are considered aquatic, of which just a hundred or

so live in the marine environment. Professor Emeritus Charles Griffiths and Professor Mike Picker, together with entomologist Alan Weaving, are South Africaʼs most respected experts on insects and co-authors of the go-to book on the subject, Field Guide to Insects of South Africa. They say there are many widely different theories as to why insects have not colonized the ocean.
