Japan has become one of the hottest travel destinations in recent years, and with TripAdvisor naming its capital city Tokyo as the top destination for 2024, the sun is shining even brighter on the island nation.
But how can you experience the trendy country in a ‘new’ way? Enter the cruise holiday – a novel approach for most travellers exploring Japan's diverse landscapes, rich culture and tantalising cuisine.
As cherry blossoms paint the landscape pink in the spring and ancient traditions intertwine with cutting-edge technology year-round, Japan beckons you with its unique charm. For families, there is an appeal for absolutely any interest.
Why a cruise?
A cruise through Japan presents a host of benefits. Forget the stress of navigating public transport in a foreign language or the constant packing and unpacking (especially if you’re travelling with the family) as you hop from city to city.
On a cruise, your floating hotel takes you effortlessly from one fascinating port to the next. For parents, this is utter bliss!
Perhaps the most appealing aspect for Rand-conscious travellers is the ability to plan and pay for most of your holiday upfront. With meals, accommodation and entertainment included, you won't be caught off guard by mounting daily expenses.
Whether you're dreaming of tranquil temple gardens, bustling city streets or authentic Japanese sushi, a cruise offers a hassle-free way to explore it all.
Norwegian Cruise Line offers a Free at Sea upgrade, which enables you to maximise your budget with a selection of perks, from unlimited open bar and specialty dining to shore excursion credits and Wi-Fi packages. Cruising presents a comfortable, convenient way to explore this fascinating country without breaking the bank.
Destination highlights: a tapestry of experiences
Tokyo: where tradition meets tomorrow
Here, you'll find yourself in a city where ancient temples stand in the shadow of futuristic skyscrapers. Escape the bustle and noise in the serene grounds of Senso-ji Shrine,
then strut the neon-lit streets of Shibuya for shopping and selfies. For a taste of local life, don't miss the controlled chaos of the Tsukiji Outer Market, where you can sample some of the freshest sushi you'll ever taste.
As your ship glides into Shimizu Port, keep your camera ready. On clear days, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. The sight of its snow-capped peak against the sky is truly unforgettable.
But this UNESCO World Heritage site isn't just a mountain; it's a cultural icon that has inspired artists and poets for centuries.
From the port of Osaka, a short journey takes you to Kyoto, Japan's former imperial capital. Here, you can lose yourself in the otherworldly beauty of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove or witness the dazzling golden splendour of Kinkaku-ji – the Golden Pavilion.
Hiroshima: a testament to resilience
A visit to Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Museum offers a moving reminder of the past. Afterwards, hop on a ferry to nearby Miyajima Island to see the famous 'floating' torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine – a sight that perfectly encapsulates Japan's spiritual heritage.
Sapporo: a gateway to natural wonders
In the north, Sapporo offers a completely different flavour of Japan. Famous for its beer, hearty ramen and nearby hot springs, it's also your gateway to Hokkaido's stunning landscapes. From here, you can easily explore some of Japan's most beautiful national parks.
Onboard experience: luxury meets comfort
Your cruise ship isn't just a means of transport; it's a destination in itself. Recently refurbished and innovative vessels like Norwegian
range of exciting experiences.
Fancy a night of dancing? Head to the Bliss Ultra Lounge on Norwegian Sun. Prefer a quiet evening with a view? The Spinnaker Lounge offers panoramic vistas perfect for watching the sunset.
When it comes to dining, you’re spoilt for choice too –there’s a world of flavours to explore without ever leaving your floating hotel.
Norwegian Spirit was designed with the adult cruiser in mind. Enjoy a sophisticated evening at Magnum's Champagne & Wine Bar, or savour fine Italian cuisine at the new Onda by Scarpetta. With modernised staterooms and reimagined public spaces, Norwegian Spirit provides a fresh, contemporary setting for your Japanese adventure.
If it’s self-care you’re after, both vessels boast the stunning Mandara Spa, voted the World's
with over 50 speciality treatments to choose from and feel all your cares drift away.
The benefits of cruising: your floating home away from home
• Unpack once – Forget the hassle of lugging a suitcase from place to place. On a cruise, your comfortable stateroom travels with you, allowing you to visit multiple destinations with ease.
• Something for everyone –From cooking classes to cultural performances, every day brings new experiences. And for the kids and teens, there are so many activities to keep them happy and entertained. You won’t hear any “I’m bored!” here.
• Freestyle cruising –Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers a 'freestyle' concept, allowing you to dine where you want, when you want –no strict dinner times or assigned seating to cramp your style.

egular exfoliation is key if you want bright and clear skin. By promoting cell turnover, exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, enhancing natural luminosity and making the skin softer and smoother. Exfoliating helps unclog the pores, reducing the risk of breakouts while ensuring the treatment products you use after exfoliating - like serums and moisturisers – penetrate deeper and work more effectively in the skin. Exfoliating two to three times a week can help reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven pigmentation, giving the skin a vibrant and youthful glow.
“Most dermatologists prefer chemical exfoliants over physical scrubs”, says Cape Town-based dermatologist Dr Lauren Knight. She goes on to explain how chemical
exfoliants utilising alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) penetrate deeper into the skin, gently dissolving dead skin cells at a molecular level. “They just provide a more even and effective exfoliation”, says Knight. “AHAs work to effectively dislodge dead skin cells on the surface while boosting hydration levels and making the skin appear plumper. On the other hand, BHAs penetrate deeper into the pores, helping to unclog them and reduce acne, while also providing anti-inflammatory benefits,” she explains.
“Physical scrubs can be abrasive and cause damage to the skin if you’re not gentle enough,” cautions Knight.
In addition to their superpower exfoliation benefits, chemical exfoliants can also increase collagen production, making them a more holistic option for achieving a radiant complexion.
Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, R895 for 118ml bottle, is a daily leave-on liquid exfoliant with Salicylic acid that unclogs and shrinks pores while evening out the skin tone. Those with normal to oily skin, congested or enlarged pores, acne-prone skin and skin showing signs of ageing will benefit the most from this formula.
decongesting pores and minimising the appearance of dark spots. This serum can be used on all skin types for a clearer, healthier complexion.
One of the best ingredients to even out skin tone and improve texture is Vitamin C. A powerful ingredient for reducing hyperpigmentation, Vitamin C inhibits melanin production, helping to lighten spots and brighten the overall complexion. Additionally, it is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin by neutralising free radicals while supporting skin repair and reducing the signs of ageing.
Peel from Dermalogica, R1,999 for 50ml, has been shown to lift surface hyperpigmentation visibly like UV-induced dark spots, postblemish marks and melasma in just five uses. The fast-acting formula contains an AHA + PHA blend that exfoliates the skin, while Niacinamide helps even skin tone. Barrier-restoring ingredients soothe the skin along with a nourishing, antioxidant-rich Tumeric butter blend that leaves it soft and smooth.
Vitaderm Hydroxy Acid Serum, R717 for 30ml, incorporates the powerful exfoliating benefits of mandelic, salicylic, glycolic and lactic acids. It works to exfoliate the skin deeply; restoring radiance, reducing fine lines and wrinkles,
Avène Vitamin Activ Radiance Corrector Serum, for 30ml, boosts luminosity, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, enhances skin firmness and diminishes the appearance of dark spots. This formula uses Ascorbyl Glucoside, a derivative of vitamin C that is gentler and better tolerated by sensitive skin.
Sunscreen is your main line of defence against harmful UV rays. A broad-spectrum sunscreen can help prevent premature ageing and reduce the risk of sun-induced skin damage. It’s important to protect your skin daily, especially when using chemical exfoliants or Vitamin C, as these ingredients enhance cell turnover and increase skin sensitivity, making it more vulnerable to UV damage.
Remember, the best skincare won’t make the slightest difference if you’re not protecting your skin against the sun’s onslaught.
Bioderma Photoderm Spot-Age SPF 50, R365 for a 40ml, is a sunscreen for all skin types that’s enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E to help prevent photo-ageing while reducing dark spots and wrinkles. Its lightweight texture makes it ideal for everyday wear under makeup. The formula is heat, humidity and water resistant and has been tested for eye tolerance. ●

SPECTACLES ARE MORE THAN JUST FUNCTIONAL; THEY HAVE GROWN INTO A KEY FASHION STATEMENT. WITH CHANGING TRENDS, WE ARE NOW EMBRACING EYEWEAR AS A BOLD STYLE CHOICE, USING IT TO REFLECT OUR UNIQUE IDENTITY.
BY ANJE HILL
“E
yewear has evolved from a practical necessity to a transformational item representing personal style in today’s ever-changing fashion world,” says Wesley Language, Optometrist at Execuspecs Pinelands. The right pair of spectacles can enhance your features, boost your confidence and make you feel empowered.
Adele Camarena, Owner and Director at Spectacle World in Cape Town, adds: “Your choice of eyewear is crucial for comfort, performance and clarity. It speaks volumes about your personality and is often the first thing people notice about you.”
To ensure they work for you, consider key factors like scale, frame width, eyebrow alignment and personality matching.
One of the most critical aspects of selecting the perfect pair of glasses is scale—the ratio between the size of your face and the dimensions of the frames. The goal is to create balance, ensuring that your spectacles harmonise with your face shape. Large faces typically feature a prominent bone structure, full lips and a broad nose, which can make finding wide enough frames a challenge. On the other hand, petite faces with smaller features like a small mouth and nose may require smaller frames, sometimes even those from children’s ranges to maintain proportion. If your facial structure falls somewhere in between, you are fortunate enough to have more flexibility, as most frame styles will suit an average face.
The width of your frames plays a significant role in achieving a balanced look. To get the right fit, examine the widest area of your face below the eye line, focusing on your jaw or cheekbone. Ideally, your frame width should match the widest point of your face. Frames that are too narrow will press against the sides,

Ray-Ban has introduced a new light-responsive frame collection called Ray-Ban Change, powered by Transitions® lenses. Available in the iconic Wayfarer and the new Wayfarer Oval designs, these frames change colour when exposed to sunlight, thanks to innovative photochromic dyes. Each pair offers a unique, one-of-a-kind pattern, evolving with the intensity of UV light. Combining style with cuttingedge technology, Ray-Ban Change frames adapt to your environment, blending functionality with fashion. Discover them at Sunglass Hut.
causing them to protrude forward and create a fuller, unflattering appearance. Conversely, frames that are too wide can overpower smaller faces, throwing the balance off.
“The right eyewear is the perfect way to take your look to the next level, as it is the quickest and easiest way to draw attention. As glasses are right in the middle of your face, they’re impossible to miss, unlike shoes or a new bag,” Language explains.
The trick is to strike a middle ground, choosing frames that neither overwhelm nor underplay your facial structure.
A well-fitting frame should enhance your natural features and your eyebrows play a key role. The top edge of your glasses should align with or sit just below your brows, creating a cohesive and flattering appearance. This ensures your glasses don’t clash with your natural expressions for a seamless look.
Eyewear is a fantastic way to express your personality, and frame shape plays a critical role. Sharp, angular frames exude confidence and drama, while softer, round frames suggest a more approachable vibe.
“Understanding your style personality is essential—it ensures that your eye-wear reflects your individuality,” Adele adds. For round faces, avoid round
frames that can exaggerate curves; instead, choose oval or cat-eye frames for contrast. Conversely, round or oval frames work well for angular faces, softening sharp lines.
“Eyewear undergoes constant evolution, reflecting the spirit of our era. Whether your preference leans towards ecoconscious choices or embraces oversized, square frames, bold cat-eyes, or geometric silhouettes, the realm of eyewear has never been more exciting,” exclaims Camarena.
In today’s fashion landscape, spectacles are more than a tool for vision—they’re an extension of your character. Whether you prefer sharp, angular designs or softer, rounded frames, there’s a perfect pair for everyone. Consider the scale, frame width and alignment with your features and don’t be afraid to experiment with bold designs. After all, your spectacles are often the first thing people notice—make them count! ●

In an industry traditionally preoccupied with youth, fashion and beauty influencer Candice-Lee Kannemeyer has embraced turning fifty and is doing things the way she’s always done them: her own way.
By Wanita Nicol
Candice-Lee Kannemeyer arrives for her cover interview a little flustered. She’s very slightly late, having come from a visa appointment that ran over time and is extremely apologetic. “I’m usually the person who arrives five minutes early,” she explains, looking sheepish.
She’s wearing jeans, sneakers and a light, moss-green jersey, a surprisingly relatable outfit for a fashion and beauty influencer, although it has the casual elegance that comes with carefully selected, well-fitting items of clothing.
Although Candice-Lee celebrated her fiftieth birthday this year, her skin looks youthful and enviably radiant. Expensive products, surely? “Good genes,” she says. “My mother aged well and so did my grandmother. The most expensive products are not my vibe. You don’t need to spend a fortune on great skincare ever.”
It’s this practical, grounded approach to the world of fashion and beauty that has earned Candice-Lee a loyal following on her blog, Inmybag.co.za and her social media channels; that and her candid, easy-going demeanour. She punctuates her sentences with a familiar tap on the knee or arm like she’s confiding in an old friend. She’s quick to laugh and she seems very comfortable with who she is, and who she’s not.
Candice-Lee began her career in modelling – first in front of the camera, then as a booker. She formed good relationships with magazine editors and it was thanks to those relationships – and her natural eye for style – that she entered the magazine world as a fashion and beauty editor.
For more than a decade Candice-Lee was the authority on all things style and beauty for some of South Africa’s most iconic women’s magazines. With the rise of digital media, she spotted an opportunity to start her own business.
“Going to events, I started seeing these bloggers and I thought, this is an interesting model, you can run your own platform, create your own content and write what you want. I decided to be brave and start a beauty blog.” The blog gave rise to a thriving Instagram community, a YouTube Channel and more recently, a TikTok account
and her content has expanded beyond beauty and fashion to general lifestyle.
Yet Candice-Lee still found time to collaborate with a friend on a range of sleepwear. Called Dream Weaver, it was 100% cotton, comfortable and locally made. Sadly, load shedding put a halt to production, but she has plans to relaunch the label in 2025. “My whole thing was to make beautiful cotton sleepwear with interesting details that were affordable and sophisticated enough for grown women to wear.”
“I’m a ‘mature influencer’,” Candice-Lee says with a smirk. “It’s hilarious. You feel 20 and you think you’re ever fresh, but your body and face say otherwise!”
Of course, hers don’t. Partly it’s those good genes, but she also takes care of herself. “Sleep is important. I’ve also become very into exercise.” That includes gym classes and twice-daily walks with her German shepherd. “I enjoy keeping fit,” she says. “I like the way I feel afterwards and I also love to eat, so I have to exercise!”
Here, she gives us a glimpse behind the camera...
AW Where did you find the courage to leave the security of your magazine job and become a full-time blogger?
CK I didn’t overthink it. I love and embrace change. I was also lucky that my partner could support me for a few years and I had saved a bit of money, so I had something to fall back on; but I also just knew that it wasn’t a bad call.
AW What are the biggest lessons you’ve learnt along the way?
CK You really know who your friends are when you start your own business – and sometimes it’s a shock to see who does and doesn’t support you. That for me was very eye-opening.
AW Your job looks very glamorous – what’s it like behind the scenes?
CK Running your own business, you work much, much harder! I work seven days a week, whether it’s writing, editing content, or planning. We’re going into launch season now and sometimes in launch season, you attend three launches a day. It’s lovely, but afterwards, you have to put a reel or a blog post out and it’s a lot and I’m always trying new stuff, which is a pleasure, obviously.
15 000
The number of steps Candice-Lee averages daily, walking her German Shepherd
AW Your daughter must love that about your job…
CK She has no interest whatsoever in beauty products or fashion! She’s an academic. She’s 20 now, she’s at university and she has no interest in this at all! So weird how that happens.
AW What do you love about what you do?
CK I want to help women feel their best. I love it when someone asks me for the most expensive product and I say to them, “Beauty products shouldn’t have to cost a fortune. What are your skin concerns?” and I give them a list of products and it all comes to under R1 000 and they can’t believe it. Then three months down the line, they’ll say, “My skin has never looked better.” I also used to do style consulting and I found it very rewarding helping people define their style. I think if you’re going to do something, you need to be of service. Beauty and fashion can be seen as quite frivolous, but if you’re doing it with the aim of adding value to people’s lives, it’s a good thing.
AW How does a person define his/her style?
CK I think you should wear what works for your body shape, what’s comfortable and what makes you feel good and confident and no one can dictate it. If you wear something with confidence, it’s going to come across well. It needs to be personal and if you don’t care about defining your style, that’s also fine.
AW Any shopping tips you can share?

FOR CENTURIES, WOMEN HAVE TURNED TO SHAPEWEAR AND UNDERGARMENTS TO CREATE THE SILHOUETTE SOCIETY DEEMS FASHIONABLE. WHAT BEGAN AS RESTRICTIVE AND UNCOMFORTABLE CLOTHING, LIKE THE CORSET, HAS EVOLVED INTO MODERN, COMFORTABLE AND BODY-POSITIVE SHAPEWEAR. THE JOURNEY FROM THESE TRADITIONAL GARMENTS TO TODAY’S CUTTING-EDGE BRAS AND SHAPEWEAR REFLECTS CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY, FASHION TRENDS AND SOCIETAL NORMS.
BY ANJE HILL
The history of body-shaping garments dates back to the 16th century when corsets were designed to cinch the waist and enhance the bust, creating the hourglass figure that was fashionable for centuries. While corsets were effective in achieving the desired look, they came at a cost to health and comfort. Made with whalebone or steel, these undergarments restricted breathing and movement and were known to cause issues such as fainting or long-term damage to internal organs.
By the 19th and early 20th centuries, women’s movements towards liberation started to challenge the rigid standards of beauty and body shaping. In the 1920s, the flapper era embraced a more androgynous figure, with looser clothing and less emphasis on curves. Yet, as fashion changed, so did the need for new kinds of shapewear.
The mid-20th century saw the introduction of girdles and bras designed to give the wearer a cinched waist and lifted bust without the harshness of a corset. Hollywood starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren set the standard for the ideal figure, making shapewear more popular than ever. In the 1950s and 60s, bras became more structured,
and bullet bras became a trend, giving women that iconic, pointed shape under their sweaters and dresses.
The fashion world continued to shape the evolution of undergarments. In the 1970s, a growing desire for natural beauty and freedom of movement, coinciding with the feminist movement, saw women opt for more comfortable, wireless bras and a shift away from rigid body shaping.
In recent decades, technological advancements have revolutionised the way women wear shapewear. Materials like Lycra, spandex, and microfiber have replaced the stiff, uncomfortable fabrics of the past. These stretchy, breathable materials allow for targeted compression, smoothing out areas like the stomach, hips, and thighs, while also being comfortable enough for all-day wear. Brands like Spanx have become synonymous with modern shapewear, offering garments that provide support without sacrificing comfort or mobility.
This new era of shapewear is designed not just to sculpt, but to boost confidence by enhancing natural curves. Instead of forcing women’s bodies into unrealistic shapes, today’s shapewear works
with the body, giving women more control over their looks. Many designs now focus on comfort as much as aesthetics, ensuring women no longer have to choose between looking good and feeling good.
Finding the right bra can make a world of difference in a woman’s day-to-day comfort and posture. A well-fitted bra can prevent back pain, shoulder discomfort, and other issues associated with ill-fitting undergarments. For women with larger busts, proper support can alleviate strain, while women with smaller busts may appreciate bras designed to create a fuller shape or provide added comfort. The evolution of bras has also seen the inclusion of wireless designs, memory foam cups, and moisturewicking fabrics, making them ideal for daily wear, fitness, or lounging.
While the primary function of shapewear is to create a smoother silhouette under clothing, the psychological benefits should not be overlooked. Feeling comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing can boost selfesteem and help women feel more in control of their bodies. For many women, shapewear serves as an empowering tool that allows them to wear clothes that make them feel their best, whether it’s a fitted dress for a formal event or workwear that requires a sleek look.
Compression shapewear can also offer health benefits, particularly when it comes to posture. Shapewear with built-in support for the back and core helps women stand taller and maintain good posture throughout the day. This not only makes them look more confident but can prevent back problems over time.
Today, body-shaping garments are no longer about extreme alterations or discomfort. They are about enhancing a woman’s natural shape, boosting her confidence, and providing comfort. The shift from restrictive corsets to breathable, lightweight fabrics reflects a broader societal move towards body positivity and self-acceptance. Women can now choose shapewear based on their personal needs, whether it’s for support, smoothing, or simply to feel more confident in their clothes.
As shapewear continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: comfort and confidence are the new priorities. ●

DISCUSSIONS ON ‘CORTISOL FACE’ ARE TRENDING ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
Ireceive daily queries asking if high cortisol is a legitimate medical issue and whether it contributes to a round, puffy, “moon face.” The answer isn’t so straightforward. I’m seeing more and more individuals with autoimmune issues, chronic fatigue and Hashimoto’s disease, all of which can be linked to low cortisol levels. This is just as concerning as high cortisol. We need cortisol— it’s essential for life. It gets us out of bed in the morning, keeps us motivated and protects us from danger.
Before we dive into discussing “cortisol face,” it’s important to understand what happens to your cortisol levels throughout the day. A typical daily cortisol curve shows that cortisol is naturally higher in the morning, as it should be and then gradually declines throughout the day, reaching its lowest point in the evening. This allows your body to produce melatonin and calm the nervous system for optimal sleep.
Vanessa Ascencao, Certified Nutritionist and Functional Medicine Practitioner, VDA Nutrition
It’s a multifaceted issue and is the result of a combination of swelling, water retention and fat deposits. The cause may vary and understanding the underlying issue is key to effective treatment.
Also known as ‘moon face’, it could be caused by:
• Cushing’s Syndrome or thyroid disease when your body produces too much cortisol. It can also show up as a “buffalo hump” on the back of the neck, “supraclavicular fat pads” on the collarbone area and a large abdomen, amongst other things.
• Certain medications can cause swelling, especially steroid medications
• Binge eating and high alcohol consumption.
• Under-eating and over-exercising will cause you to retain water, affect your thyroid and cause inflammation – puffiness.
The last 3 causes are stresses in their own right.
• Whole Body Stress.
• High stress can present its symptoms throughout the body.
• Most commonly inflammation and water retention which, can be felt and visible on the face.
It can also show in other ways, potentially more damaging. These include:
• Unexplained weight gain
• Changes to your skin appearance and health
• Muscle weakness
• Mood instability associated with anxiety, depression, and overall sadness
• High blood sugar
• Fatigue
• Trouble sleeping
• Headaches
• Upset stomach
• Hormonal imbalances
Modern life often bombards us with stressors, leaving little room for recovery or relief. Factors such as fasting, poor sleep hygiene, frequent caffeine consumption, excessive screen time and demanding jobs, strain our physical and mental health. Additionally, inactivity or a lack of daily movement, limited fulfilling activities outside work and weakened social and familial connections, further compound the issue Unhealthy
coping mechanisms, including frequent alcohol consumption, trauma, substance abuse, binge eating and under-eating, alongside perfectionism, create a breeding ground for stressrelated conditions like ‘cortisol face’, where the chronic effects of stress become visibly apparent.
I recommend managing your stress through the following steps. First, get tested to understand your unique biomarkers. Cortisol levels can be measured by a doctor using blood, urine, or saliva samples. Once you have that information, focus on these areas:
• Incorporate meditation, nature walks, or grounding practices—find ways to relax, decompress, and regulate your central nervous system.
• Prioritize 8 hours of sleep every night—this is nonnegotiable.
• Start your day with protein to stabilize your energy levels.
• Eliminate alcohol from your routine.
• Eat nourishing meals three times a day, cutting out sugar and avoiding constant snacking.
• Explore trauma and body stress release techniques.
• Stay active but avoid overly intense workouts. Opt for more walks, incorporate resistance training, and scale back on extreme exercise routines.
If you struggle with high cortisol levels, it’s essential to approach each moment with a calm mindset, free from the constant drive to complete tasks, overthinking, or feelings of panic. The key to balancing cortisol is developing the ability to find calm, self-regulate both body and mind and create a sense of safety within yourself. ●

MAGNESIUM IS VITAL FOR MAINTAINING GOOD HEALTH, BUT WITH VARIOUS FORMS AVAILABLE, IT CAN BE CONFUSING TO KNOW WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE. WE BREAK DOWN THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTS AND THEIR UNIQUE BENEFITS.
BY ANJE HILL
Magnesium supports energy production, DNA repair and muscle function. About 60% of the body’s magnesium is stored in bones, while the rest supports muscles, soft tissues and the nervous system. Maintaining sufficient magnesium levels is crucial for overall health.
“Magnesium is a very important mineral that is involved in more than 300 different reactions in the body that govern hormonal balance, bone health and mental health, amongst others. Women, particularly those in the peri or postmenopausal stages, are more susceptible to deficiency,” explains Dr. Melinda Whitfield, a family GP and wellness expert. Magnesium supplements can bridge this gap, but with many types available, it’s crucial to know which form is best for you.
Highly absorbable, magnesium glycinate is known for its calming properties, often used for anxiety, insomnia, and stress relief.
Best for: Reducing anxiety, stress, and improving sleep.
Magnesium citrate, composed of magnesium and citrate ions, is known for its high bioavailability, making it easier for the body to absorb compared with other forms like magnesium oxide. It is commonly found in dietary
supplements and multivitamins. This form of magnesium can help manage digestive health, anxiety, osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions like high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels.
Best for: Digestive health, anxiety relief and metabolic support.
Magnesium oxide is commonly used for heartburn, indigestion and constipation; however, it’s not ideal for raising magnesium levels due to poor absorption. Its laxative effect makes it better suited for short-term digestive relief.
Best for: Digestive issues like constipation and heartburn.
Known for its brain health benefits, this form may improve memory and cognitive function. Its ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier makes it a promising choice for agerelated mental decline.
Best for: Brain health and memory.
Magnesium aids exercise performance by transporting blood sugar to muscles and clearing lactate, improving recovery and endurance.
“Magnesium deficiency can exacerbate anxiety and low mood, especially in peri or menopausal women, due to its role in regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin,” explains Dr. Melinda. “Incorporating magnesium supplements can significantly improve mood stability and reduce stress.” Studies show deficiency may increase the risk of depression and anxiety, making supplementation a potential remedy for stress.
Highly absorbable, magnesium chloride effectively replenishes low levels. Available in both oral and topical forms, it’s better absorbed when taken orally, as there’s little evidence to support absorption through the skin. Best for: Low magnesium levels and managing heartburn.
Low magnesium levels can manifest as increased anxiety, fatigue or even insomnia, as magnesium helps to relax the body and regulate neurotransmitters like serotonin,” says Dr. Melinda. Gentler on the stomach, magnesium lactate is ideal for those needing higher doses of magnesium. It may also
A review of older adults with insomnia found that taking magnesium supplements reduced the time it took to fall asleep by an average of 17 minutes.
reduce stress and anxiety, though further research is needed. Best for: Sensitive stomachs or high-dose needs.
This form supports energy production and may help with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Though research is limited, anecdotal evidence suggests it can reduce muscle pain and boost energy.
Best for: Chronic fatigue and muscle-related conditions.
Combining magnesium with taurine, this form supports cardiovascular health, regulating blood sugar and blood
Magnesium’s anti-inflammatory benefits may help reduce markers like CRP and prevent migraines, offering relief for frequent headache sufferers.
Dr. Melinda Whitfield highlights several key symptoms of magnesium deficiency, which are often vague and easily misdiagnosed but most commonly are:
• Muscle cramps (including restless legs)
Fatigue (due to impaired energy production)
• Anxiety and low mood (as magnesium regulates serotonin)
Insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep)
• Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) Headaches or migraines
• Bone health issues (osteoporosis risk)
• High blood pressure (linked to poor vascular relaxation)
• PMS and menstrual cramping (due to hormonal imbalance)

pressure. It’s beneficial for those with heart issues. Best for: Heart health and managing blood sugar.
MAGNESIUM SULFATE
Commonly used in baths as Epsom salt, magnesium sulfate is known for relaxing muscles and reducing stress, though its skin absorption remains uncertain. Best for: Muscle relaxation and stress relief.
MAGNESIUM OROTATE
This form supports cardiovascular health by aiding energy production in heart tissues. Popular among athletes, it’s also more expensive than other types.
Best for: Athletes or heart health.
Before supplementing, ensure you need extra magnesium. Those with digestive issues, type 2 diabetes or chronic stress may benefit. Aim to get around 320 mg daily, ideally from food. Consult a healthcare professional if you’re considering a supplement to address your needs.
Magnesium is crucial for overall health, but many people fail to get enough from their diet. By selecting the right form for your needs, magnesium supplements can enhance heart health, reduce stress and support digestion. ●

When we think about heart health, we often focus on arteries, cholesterol and blood health; however, an often overlooked aspect is the condition of our veins. Veins play a crucial role in transporting deoxygenated blood back to the heart. When they don’t function properly, it can lead to health complications, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Veins are part of a complex circulatory system, working alongside arteries to maintain smooth blood flow throughout the body. They contain valves that prevent blood from flowing backwards, ensuring it moves toward the heart; however, these valves can weaken, or veins can become damaged due to various factors, leading to conditions such as varicose veins or venous insufficiency.
When veins are compromised, blood can pool, causing swelling, pain and potentially dangerous clots. Blood clots, if they travel to the lungs or heart, can cause serious conditions like pulmonary embolism or heart attack.
Compromised vein health can place extra strain on the heart. When blood is not efficiently returned to the heart, the heart has to work harder, which can increase blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, heart attacks and strokes.
“Essentially, CVD is a series of heart diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes, that are a result of heart failure,” explains Dr. Dion Kapp, Executive Manager of Managed Healthcare and Providers at Bestmed Medical Scheme. “Most of these diseases are related to atherosclerosis, which is plaque
build-up in the walls of the arteries, narrowing them and increasing the chance of blood clots.”
Several factors contribute to poor vein health. Women are more prone to issues such as varicose veins and venous insufficiency due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause and the use of oral contraceptives. These fluctuations can weaken vein walls and valves. Other risk factors include: Sedentary lifestyle: Sitting or standing for extended periods can cause blood to pool in the veins.
Ageing: As veins age, their elasticity decreases, making them more vulnerable to damage. Obesity: Extra weight adds pressure to veins, especially in the legs. Smoking: Smoking damages blood vessels, increasing the risk of vein and heart problems.
Dr. Kapp highlights that hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. “Hypertension is the single biggest risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, with one in three adults in South Africa suffering from the condition,” he says. Poor lifestyle habits, including smoking, excessive alcohol intake and high salt consumption, can exacerbate hypertension.
The good news is that several lifestyle changes can improve vein health and help reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications: Stay Active: Regular exercise like walking, cycling and swimming promotes better circulation and reduces the risk of venous insufficiency. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Managing weight reduces pressure on veins, especially those in the lower body.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of SA cites cardiovascular disease as the second-leading cause of death in the country, responsible for some 18% of all deaths, with 120 people suffering from a heart attack every day. Mbali Mapholi, Laager Rooibos partner dietitian, explains that the risk of heart disease can be reduced by making small daily changes, with a focus on simple dietary adjustments.
Choose homemade popcorn over crisps for a healthier, low-fat snack packed with fibre. Add nutritional yeast instead of salt for extra flavour. Switch to Wholewheat Bread
Opt for brown or wholewheat bread to boost fibre intake, lower cholesterol and stabilise blood sugar, reducing your risk of heart disease. Use Canola or Olive Oil
Replace ghee or lard with heartfriendly oils like canola or olive oil, which help lower bad cholesterol (LDL).
Replace Salt with a Flavour Shaker
Create a blend of herbs, spices and citrus zest to cut back on sodium without compromising taste.
Drink Rooibos Tea Instead of Sugary Drinks
Laager Rooibos is caffeine-free, antioxidant-rich and supports healthy blood pressure, making it a heartfriendly choice over sugary drinks.
Elevate Your Legs: Elevating your legs when resting can assist in preventing blood pooling.
Quit Smoking: Giving up smoking benefits both heart and vein health. Wear Compression Stockings: These can improve blood circulation, particularly in individuals at risk for vein problems.
If you experience symptoms like swollen legs, persistent pain, or visible varicose veins, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional. Early intervention, including treatments like vein ablation or sclerotherapy, can help restore vein function and reduce the risk of further cardiovascular complications.
By understanding the link between vein health and heart health, adopting a healthier lifestyle and seeking early medical intervention when necessary, we can protect both our veins and our hearts for better overall well-being. ●

Myth and shame have long meant that menstruation goes undiscussed in the home. Perhaps it’s time we rethink ‘The Period Experience.’
By Celeste Strydom
We need to talk about periods generally with our daughters from about the age of seven. Many girls’ first inkling of menstruation is playground gossip. This can foster a sense of anxiety and isolation in anticipation of what’s to come.
Speaking openly and appropriately about our natural bodily functions from an early age can help your daughter avoid feelings of awkwardness or embarrassment. This is a subject that can be covered in a series of conversations over some time. One big talk might feel scary and overwhelming. As your daughter approaches puberty,
you might start having more focused talks.
• Ask her how much she knows about periods.
• Share some of your own experiences.
• Steer away from language that euphemises ‘that time of the month’, ‘protection’, ‘lady bits’.
• Use clear language. ‘period’, ‘menstruation cup’, vagina.
• Invite her to ask questions.
• Introduce her to menstrual products.
This is the gateway to setting the tone for how she will speak about her body, her sexuality and her health.
Dr Sibu Lubelwana, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Durban, and Honorary Lecturer at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine says that on average, a girl’s first period can be expected at around 12 or 13 years old. Of course, every girl is different and, Dr Lubelwana explains: “Menstruation will not begin until a girl has started developing secondary sexual characteristics.”
Dr Lubelwana explains, “When my daughter had her first period, my first words to her were: ‘Congratulations’. As a mother and a gynaecologist, I’ve made a conscious decision, to to influence the period experience positively. Period positivity doesn’t mean we pretend it’s all fun and games, it means we receive it positively and embrace this monthly event.”
Helping your daughter understand common period symptoms can prepare her for what to expect each month.
Bleeding: Reassure her that it’s normal and a sign of her body working as it should.
Cramps: Mild to moderate cramps in the lower abdomen and back are common. Suggest using a heating pad or over-thecounter pain relievers.
Mood Swings: Hormonal changes can cause mood swings. Let her know that these feelings are normal and valid.
Disposable
Starting with disposable pads might be the easiest option. There are plenty of organic cotton pads which are hypoallergenic, biodegradable, plastic-free and chlorine-free. Our favourite ANNA Pure Organic Pads are made from 100% natural plant fibres and are available at most supermarkets. Purchase different absorbencies (light, medium, heavy, overnight) to match varying flow throughout her period.
Reusable Pads
The youth of today are very aware of the environmental issue of plastic waste we face. Reusable pads are a great way to save the environment and are suitable for every stage of her cycle, day and night and suitable right from her first period. Cloth pads are available in a range of absorbencies just like disposable pads from light flow right up to heavy flow and come in a range of materials including organic cotton, soft bamboo or quick-drying polyester.
These characteristics might suggest that menstruation will soon follow:
Breast development • Pubic hair •
Parents should schedule a visit to the gynaecologist if:
By age 14 there are no secondary • sexual characteristics
By age 16 there is a failure of • initiation of menstruation
“Period underwear is relatively new, but it can provide a fair amount of absorbency as a stand-alone period product or as a backup product to protect from break-through bleeding with other products,” says Dr. Jessica Fraker an internal medicine physician with Banner–University Medicine Internal Medicine Clinic. “They may be more comfortable to wear and are very sustainable as they can be washed and re-worn.” The Bodhi B Cotton period underwear is fashionable and comfortable and will keep her confident and secure for up to 8 hours.
Tampons
There are a few more cons than pros. Tampons are super absorbent and can leave her vagina prone to infections. If not changed frequently enough, she runs the risk of developing ToxicShock-Syndrome. If she prefers tampons, introduce her to those that are plastic and chlorine-free and are made from organic cotton. Make sure she knows never to leave them in for longer than 8 hours. If your daughter is comfortable with tampons, buy different sizes and absorbencies, plus a backup like a thin panty liner for extra protection.
Menstrual Cups
Menstrual cups are another reusable option if your daughter is comfortable with inserting and cleaning them.
“Proper insertion may be a little trickier than with tampons, so it may take some getting used to,” Dr. Fraker says. “The funnel-shaped cups can be left in for up to 12 hours and are also washable and reusable, so they are a sustainable and cost-effective option.”
As parents, our values should centre on honesty, openness and acceptance. If this is the language we speak, then let us speak, then let us use it with our pubescent daughters.
Dr Lubelwana encourages keeping a period diary or making use of a period app. A normal healthy period should not be painful. A period that impacts negatively on quality of life needs medical investigation.
Cramping, bloating or rage may be signs of unbalanced hormones. This discomfort can be treated naturally. Now that we have the wisdom that says that we don’t need to be locked away for a week of each cycle, we can teach our daughters to listen to their bodies in ways that we have only recently discovered ourselves.
There are many ways in which we can support our girls as they become healthy, informed, period-positive women, i.e. acupuncture, fatty acid supplements, magnesium, dietary changes, yoga, meditation, physical activity, gynaecology, technology and the village in which they are raised. ●

In a bold move to combat digital addiction and improve pupils’ mental health, Holy Rosary School for Girls launched an 80-day smartphone abstinence challenge. Dubbed “80 Days: Phone Like It’s 1999,” this initiative follows the successful “Phone-Free 40 days” challenge earlier this year.
The new challenge, starting in May, invited students and staff to surrender their smartphones in exchange for feature phones with limited functionality—only calls and SMS, no social media access. Holy Rosary Principal Natalie Meerholz, the driving force behind the SmartAge for Smartphone campaign, said: “We are exceptionally proud of everyone who took part in our second challenge. Some of our girls have completed both challenges and been without their phones for 120 days which is impressive, proving it’s possible to break free from the digital trap. We were exceptionally
excited that despite major fear of missing out and plenty of peer pressure, eight of our participants were in matric.”
This 80-day challenge doubled the duration of the initial 40-day challenge, which saw 44% completion. This time, nearly 88% completed the challenge, including 38 primary school students, 18 high schoolers, and one staff member. Meerholz explains that the extended timeframe was crucial in reinforcing behavioural change and reducing the likelihood of returning to old habits.
Throughout the challenge, participants reported
“These programmes offer an innovative solution to the growing concerns about smartphone addiction, addressing the links between excessive use and mental health issues in young people.”
feeling more present and focused. One Grade 10 pupil noted that without her phone, she slept better and was less distracted. The initiative also fostered a sense of community, with more free time previously consumed by smartphones. To support this, the school organised monthly activities, including a large crocheting charity event that drew over 600 participants and raised R60,000 for paediatric cardiac surgery.
To close out the campaign, Brad Huddleston, author of Digital Cocaine, addressed the school, discussing the dangers of smartphone addiction and its impact on brain function. He explained the parallels between technology addiction and drug use, reinforcing the importance of limiting screen time for young people.
Globally, concerns over smartphone use and its effect on children’s mental health are rising. Schools like Holy Rosary are leading the charge to delay smartphone ownership, with parents encouraged to wait until at least age 14 for phones and age 16 for social media.
In July, the prestigious Eton College in the UK, announced its intention to issue new Gr 9 students (13 years) Nokia handsets that lack internet access and can only be used for calls and texts.
Meerholz notes, “While smartphones can offer social connections, we need to introduce them thoughtfully and only when children are ready. Our goal is for parents to feel no pressure to buy phones too early.”
On 10 September the Australian government announced that a social media minimum age limit will be introduced into law. Although not confirmed, it’s expected to be between 14 and 16. The legislation will put Australia among the first countries in the world to impose an age restriction on social media.
“Our ‘Phone-Free 40 Days’ and ‘80 Days: Phone Like It’s 1999’ challenges are more than just school initiatives - they’re catalysts for a broader movement,” says Meerholz. “By encouraging our pupils to disconnect from their devices and engage with the world around them, we’re nurturing the growth of capable, confident, and happy adults. These programmes offer an innovative solution to the growing concerns about smartphone addiction, addressing the links between excessive use and mental health issues in young people. Our goal is to foster healthy, balanced childhoods in this digital age, and we hope to see the SmartAge for Smartphone movement grow beyond our school walls. This is just the beginning of a real, meaningful change in how we approach technology and child development,” concludes Meerholz. ●

Simple and tasty recipes from Keto Lifestyle: Simple by
Prep time: 10 min Cooking time: 20 min Serving 1
Ingredients
120g zucchini (baby marrows)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 Tbsp (15ml) pumpkin seeds
1 (140g) chicken breast
1 Tbsp (15ml) butter
1 Tbsp (15ml) olive oil
80g halloumi, cubed
¼ cup (60ml) zesty chimichurri
A small handful of fresh basil, chopped
Grated zest and juice of ½ lemon
½ medium yellow pepper, finely diced
1 chilli, finely diced and seeds removed
1 clove garlic, minced
2 Tbsp (30ml) chopped fresh parsley
6 Tbsp (90ml) olive oil
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 Place the lemon zest and juice into a small bowl.
2 Mix in the yellow pepper, chilli, garlic, parsley and olive oil. Season to your liking.
Method
1 To make the zoodles (zucchini noodles), use a spiraliser to cut the zucchini into thin noodles. This is a lot easier if the zucchinis are large. If you don’t have a spiraliser, use a potato peeler to create shavings and then slice into thinner noodles with a sharp knife. Place the noodles in a colander, sprinkle with salt and leave to rest for 15 minutes.
2
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and toast the pumpkin seeds for a few minutes until fragrant. Watch carefully as they can burn quickly.
3
Season the chicken breast with salt and pepper. Heat the butter in a pan and pan-fry the chicken for 10 minutes on each side or until cooked. Leave to rest for 5 minutes and then slice.
4
Heat the olive oil in the same pan and fry the halloumi until it turns golden brown on each side.
5
Boil the zucchini noodles for 60 seconds in salted water, then drain. Transfer the noodles to a bowl and toss with the chimichurri.
6
Serve the noodles with the sliced chicken and halloumi cubes. Top with toasted pumpkin seeds and chopped basil, or any other garnish you prefer.
Note
To make this a true time-saving dish, prepare the zucchini noodles and chimichurri ahead of time
Ingredients
Prep time: 15 min Cooking time: 30 min Serving 1
150g smoked snoek fillet or 150g hake (snoek will have more flavour)
1 Tbsp (15ml) butter
½ onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
½ tsp (2.5ml) each: ground coriander, ground ginger, curry powder
1 tsp (5ml) lemon juice
1 Tbsp (15ml) flaked almonds (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
¼ cup (60ml) cream or coconut cream (for a dairy-free alternative)
½ large egg (whisk 1 whole egg and pour off half. Save the rest for another recipe)
1 bay leaf (optional)
Note
To convert this to a meal-prep meal, batch-cook 4–6 portions and store in an airtight container (in the fridge for up to 3 days or freezer for up to 1 week) to reheat for lunch. If batch cooking, the cooking time may increase to 40 minutes.
Method
1 Preheat the oven to 180°C.
2
Cut the snoek (or hake) into chunks and place them in a shallow pan of boiling water. Simmer over low heat until cooked (about 5 minutes). Remove any bones and flake the fish. Set aside.
3
Heat the butter in a frying pan and sauté the onion and garlic until soft. Add the spices and cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant. Finally, add the lemon juice and flaked almonds. Season with salt and pepper. Turn off the heat.
4 Add the flaked fish to the frying pan and stir gently to combine.
5
In a small bowl, whisk the egg and cream together. Add a sprinkle of salt.
6 Transfer the fish mixture to an ovenproof ramekin. Pour the cream and egg mixture over the top. Top with the bay leaf.
7 Bake in the oven for 20–30 minutes until the egg custard is set and golden brown.
8 Serve immediately.

Prep time: 20 min Cooking time: 35 min Serving 1
Ingredients
ONION GRAVY
1 Tbsp (15ml) butter
½ onion, sliced
½ tsp (2.5ml) balsamic vinegar
½ tsp (2.5ml) erythritol (optional)
½ cup (125ml) beef stock
½ tsp (2.5ml) cornflour (e.g. Maizena) (optional, for thickening if necessary)
Salt and pepper, to taste
CAULI MASH
100g cauliflower florets
1 Tbsp (15ml) butter
Salt and pepper, to taste
PORK SAUSAGES
½ Tbsp (7.5ml) olive oil
2 (120g) pork sausages
Note
If preparing for meal prep, prepare 4 portions and dish the susages, mash and gravy into 4 airtight containers. Store for up to 5 days in the fridge and reheat to piping hot before serving. Freeze any extras for the following week.
1
Method
To prepare the gravy, heat the butter in a pot over low heat. Add the onion and cook, covered, for 8–10 minutes or until the onion has softened.
2 Stir in the balsamic vinegar and erythritol. Add the beef stock, cover and bring to a gentle boil for 5 minutes.
3 Meanwhile, mix the cornflour with a few drops of water to form a paste. Stir the paste into the onion gravy. Bring it to a boil and cook for about 8 more minutes or until the gravy has thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4
For the cauli mash, boil the florets for 5–7 minutes or until soft. Drain and return the florets to the pot. Add the butter, salt and pepper. Blend with a stick blender or use a hand masher. To make it extra creamy, leave it to stand for 5 minutes and then blend again.
5 To cook the sausages, heat the oil in a pan and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes on each side until brown and cooked through.
6 Serve the sausages on a bed of cauli mash and top with the onion gravy. Garnish as desired.
Prep time: 20 min Cooking time: 35 min Serving 12
Ingredients
BASE
1 cup (120g) almond flour
½ cup (55g) coconut flour
½ cup (40g) desiccated coconut
½ tsp (2.5ml) salt
1 tsp (5ml) baking powder
2 Tbsp (30ml) erythritol
½ cup (125ml) melted butter
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
FILLING
200g frozen or fresh raspberries
2 Tbsp (30ml) erythritol
2 Tbsp (30ml) lemon juice
2 Tbsp (30ml) water
2 Tbsp (30ml) chia seeds
COCONUT MERINGUE
3 egg whites
¼ cup (60ml) erythritol
200g desiccated coconut
1
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin.
2 For the base, combine the almond flour, coconut flour, desiccated coconut, salt, baking powder and erythritol in a mixing bowl. Stir in the melted butter, followed by the beaten egg and vanilla extract. Stir until it forms a crumbly texture.
3 Spoon some of the flour mixture into each cup of the muffin tin, and, using your fingers, press it firmly and evenly on the base and about halfway up the sides of the cups.
4 Bake for 8 minutes, then remove from the oven but do not switch off the oven.
5
Meanwhile, make the filling. Place the raspberries, erythritol, lemon juice and water in a pot. Bring to a boil and mash the raspberries. Remove from the heat, stir in the chia seeds and place in the fridge to chill.
6 Prepare the coconut meringue. Using a hand whisk or an electric beater, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks, then gradually add the erythritol while still whisking. Lastly, fold in the desiccated coconut.
7 Once the base has cooled slightly, spoon some of the chilled filling into each cup and top with meringue.
8 Bake in the oven for 18 minutes.
Izele van Blerk is a force to be reckoned with in the winemaking world. With over 15 years of experience at KWV, she has established herself as a pioneer in the industry, blending tradition with innovation to craft exceptional wines. Her journey from the tennis courts of the USA to the vineyards of South Africa is testament to her resilience and passion.
We spoke to her about her approach to winemaking, the excitement of working with niche varietals like Tempranillo, and the importance of pushing boundaries while staying true to the fundamentals. We also dived into her latest creation, The Mentors Tempranillo 2021, a wine that reflects her commitment to quality and adventurous spirit.
AW Can you tell us about your journey as a female winemaker and what inspired you to pursue this career?
IVB Expect the unexpected- my life motto.
I began my journey as a tennis player in the USA, but after an injury, I returned to South Africa to pursue my studies at Stellenbosch University.
In my fourth year, I completed an internship at KWV, and upon graduating, I was appointed as a winemaker at KWV. The exciting thing about wine is, that it keeps you humble because you will never produce the best wine in the world, but we can push the boundaries with innovation and experimentation. As a female winemaker, I find it incredibly rewarding to bring focus and attention to detail in the winemaking process. At KWV, we are a diverse group of winemakers, each
contributing unique personalities and strengths. We learn from one another and keep each other grounded. At KWV, we also have an exceptional viticulture team, including a talented female viticulturist. I have been at KWV for 15 years and believe I have to share my knowledge and innovation not just at KWV but with the South African wine industry.
AW The Limited-Edition Tempranillo 2021 is a new addition to The Mentors series. What makes this vintage special and what can wine enthusiasts expect from it?
IVB I have been working with and monitoring the Tempranillo block in Wellington for the past 10-15 years and with experimentation and innovation (playing with different barrels and different winemaking techniques). 2021 finally proved to be an expectational vintage, worthy of a spot amongst The Mentors Limited-Edition wines. It delivered a typical Rioja-style wine and Rioja is well-known and celebrated for Tempranillo.
AW How does the production process of the Tempranillo 2021 differ from previous releases in The Mentors series?
IVB Every varietal is so different, with the Nebbiolo for example we had to do it in an Italian style – so we left it for 3 years in a barrel and 2 years bottled. For the Tempranillo, we hand sort, bunch sort and berry sort the grapes; however, the oaking process differs from our other Limited-Edition wines, where we typically use 100% or 70% new French oak. In this case, we used a significant amount of American oak, as Tempranillo adapts exceptionally well to it, allowing us to achieve the desired concentration and fruit purity with vanilla and caramel flavours. The result is a beautiful, bold wine that is soft on the palate with well-integrated tannins.
AW What are some of the challenges and rewards of working with Limited-Edition wines, especially with such a small production like 1000 litres?
IVB It is not a challenge but rather super exciting to produce unique or niche wines in our country. Again, it is about the educational element, showcasing what we have in South Africa and what we can do here. It is about opening the field for different wines and
wine styles. The Limited-Edition wines aren’t always necessarily the best wines in The Mentors range, but they each tell a unique story – whether it’s a niche varietal, an interesting site or an unexpected flavour – like our spearmint Malbec. It is important to showcase what SA can produce and how diverse we are – not just in culture but in soil types and varietals.
AW What is your favourite aspect of working with Tempranillo grapes and how does this variety fit into your overall winemaking philosophy?
IVB I love early ripening varietals like Tempranillo, as they allow more time to focus on their specific characteristics. Tempranillo’s density and versatility—producing red fruit when picked early and dark fruit later—make it adaptable to oak, thriving in 100% new barrels. As a niche varietal in South Africa, it embodies my winemaking philosophy of experimentation and innovation, pushing boundaries with unique techniques and unexpected blends.
Looking ahead, are there any new projects or innovations you’re excited about in your winemaking career?
Every vintage is a new project, as no two are ever the same. While we experiment with niche varietals and techniques, our focus remains on quality—getting the best from every region and block. My philosophy blends innovation with a commitment to the basics: understanding wine chemistry, knowing the vineyards, and creating wine styles that resonate with consumers and stand among the best in the world.
What advice would you give to aspiring female winemakers who are just starting in the industry?
Always stay true to yourself, be humble and learn from others while sharing your knowledge. Understand your vineyards and collaborate closely with your team, including marketing and sales. Taste a variety of wines as often as possible and remember that winemaking is about creating something enjoyable—so stay connected, listen, and involve everyone in the process. ●

AS THE COOLER MONTHS FADE AND WARMER DAYS SETTLE IN,
YOUR GARDEN IS READY TO BURST BACK TO LIFE. THE LONGER DAYS AND MILDER TEMPERATURES MAKE IT THE IDEAL TIME TO PREP YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE FOR A VIBRANT SEASON AHEAD. FROM PLANTING NEW BLOOMS TO NURTURING YOUR LAWN, HERE ARE TEN KEY TASKS YOU CAN DO NOW TO GET YOUR GARDEN IN SHAPE AND THRIVING.
As the temperatures rise, it’s crucial to increase your watering routine. Seedbeds, in particular, must stay consistently moist during the germination phase, so make sure they never dry out. Young plants and seedlings need extra attention as they grow, so daily watering is essential. Use a gentle spray from a watering can to avoid disturbing fragile seedlings and ensure they stay hydrated without being washed away.
After a season of compacting, your soil will benefit from a layer of compost to rejuvenate it. Mulching afterwards not only keeps moisture locked in but also encourages earthworm activity, which is beneficial for soil health.
Spring is the ideal time to clean up areas like pebble pathways or borders, removing dust and mud that may have accumulated over winter. If you have bromeliads, clean out old water from their urns to give them a fresh start.
Spring is planting season and adding colourful perennials like Aquilegia hybrids, Geranium incanum, and Diascia hybrids can bring vibrant hues to your garden. Consider sowing easy-togrow plants like Lobularia for quick results, or add summerflowering bulbs like dahlias and calla lilies for a beautiful display.
Fertilising is crucial at this time of the year to give your plants the nutrients they need after winter. Azaleas, camellias and gardenias thrive with acidic plant food, while other plants benefit from tailored fertilisers. Remember to water thoroughly after feeding to help nutrients soak in.
This season is the perfect time to divide plants like white arum lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) and replant them in wet or shaded spots. If you have bromeliads, now’s the time to remove and replant their suckers to help your garden’s greenery expand.
Pruning is essential to encourage fresh, healthy growth after winter. Remove frost-damaged branches, trim topiaries to maintain their shape and prune winter-flowering shrubs like hibiscus and poinsettias to keep them looking neat.
Now is the time to give your lawn some love. Use sterilised lawn dressing to avoid drainage issues and water deeply but less frequently to promote deeper root growth. For new lawns, prep the soil with compost and bonemeal, and for established lawns, treat any weeds with a broadleaf herbicide.
Begin planting cold-tolerant crops like beetroots, carrots and lettuce at the start of spring and as temperatures rise, introduce beans, zucchini and tomatoes later in the month. To jump-start your harvest, consider planting mature vegetable plants from nurseries that are already flowering or fruiting.
Warmer weather means pests like snails and aphids will be on the rise. Regularly check your garden for signs of pests and use organic controls to keep them at bay while protecting the environment.
By focusing on these essential seasonal gardening tasks, your garden will not only recover from winter but thrive well into the summer, creating a lush and vibrant space for you to enjoy. ●
Give your lawnmower a seasonal check-up before diving into lawn care. Start by inspecting its overall condition and looking for any signs of damage to the housing, wheels or blades. If the blades are dull, consider having them sharpened and balanced, whether at a specialised dealer like STIHL or a trusted local service. For petrol-powered mowers, spring is the ideal time to change the oil if you hadn’t already done it at the end of last season, as this helps remove debris and extends the engine’s life. Also, don’t forget to check the air filter—if it’s dirty or clogged, it’s time for a replacement. If you’re using a cordless mower, make sure the battery is fully charged and ready to go for the season ahead. Proper maintenance keeps your lawnmower running smoothly and ensures a flawless lawn.

The iron Vieques XS bath, created by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola for Agape (agapedesign.it), is the show-stopper that makes this light-filled bathroom so memorable. Taking centre stage in this spa-like relaxation zone – which is situated in a cottage on a working wine farm – elegance of the bath is highlighted by the all-white floor and wall tiles, which enhance the back-to-basics atmosphere.
Unashamedly feminine in its styling and details, this bathroom is one of a pair of en suite dressing rooms and bathrooms that are situated on opposite sides of the master suite in a large family home. The walls are hand-painted with chinoiserie-style decorations, the hanging light fitting is by Moooi (moooi.com) and interior designer Andrea Graff (andreagraff.co. za) conceptualised and commissioned the custom-made vanity unit and Perspex shelving.
The bathtub is positioned to enable its occupant to relish the picture-perfect mountain view, with the vintage bamboo side table alongside it providing the ideal resting place for pampering bath-time accoutrements.
Among a number of vintage-style adornments to a gorgeous old grande dame of a heritage house, is this delightfully old-school bathroom, in which the basin and vanity unit – conceptualised and custom-made for the space by interior designer Charlotte Collins (instagram.com/ charlottecollinsdesignstudio/) – is fashioned from a salvaged lab cabinet. Its simple lines and functional feel beautifully complement the extravagantly floral wallpaper.
Tip
The vintage mirror – complete with yet more floral detailing – is the perfect final touch in this charm-filled space. It’s worth tracking down authentic versions of these mirrors when recreating this look; they are relatively easy to find at second-hand stores and bric-a-brac markets.
This combines colours and sleek lines to create a contemporary take on Art Deco in a glamorous urban bolthole. This bathroom demonstrates that eschewing white can be a very good idea. The use of multiple textures – from sleek glass tiles to wooden flooring and velvet upholstery – plays a key role in taking this space from ordinary to exceptional. Also notable is the sophisticated use of colour, which reinforces the overall impression of tailored masculinity.
Located in a thoughtfully renovated country cottage that is a haven for salvaged and vintage items of all kinds, this bathroom combines a faded Persian rug with reused marble countertops and a charming pair of shelf brackets. The latter are made from reclaimed pieces of the intricate ironwork detailing on Victorian-era houses in South Africa that is colloquially locally known as “broekie lace” (“broekies” is the Afrikaans word for women’s underwear).
This curvaceous, custom-made bathroom vanity unit is a stylish exercise in retro chic. Combining as it does very contemporary colours with a terrazzo countertop and oversized tiles, as well as the lesson in elegant geometry created via the shapely oval of the unit itself and the perfectly round basins (from South African design Studio 19 studio19.co), this bathroom is a Decoinspired lesson in up-to-the-minute style. Tip
Every design detail in this space has been carefully considered, with the graphic lineality of the wall tiles combining beautifully with the detailing on the vanity, and even the subtle lines of the upholstery contributing Deco-style touches to the overall look.
The multi-referential blend of textures, materials and colours in this bathroom is bold and fearless – and adding yet more tactile appeal to the space are the white wall tiles, which are handmade by South African bespoke tile manufacturers, Akashic Tiles akashictiles.co.za.
Making use of upcycled vintage furniture items such as an old wooden sideboard or chest of drawers – as seen here – is bang on trend in bathrooms. It’s an excellent way to add a touch of originality and charm to an otherwise stark space and very easy to do. Pick a basin that subtly complements the lines of the furniture piece that you’ve chosen and keep the tapware either very simple, or similar in style to the basin and refurbished vanity unit.
Bold and angular in its lines, and making use of honest, old-fashioned materials, this striking bathroom reflects its globe-trotting chef owner’s easy, naturally inspired aesthetic style. An industrial-style shower cubicle, plus loose items like the ladder towel rail and the chunky, open-sided bathroom vanity – fashioned out of solid oak – combine to create an unaffected look and feel. The rustic chandelier is the perfect finishing touch to an utterly original space.
An opulent Edwardian home is the setting for this very atmospheric bathroom, which combines old and new elements in a seemingly effortless mix. The homeowner, mindful that she lives in a heritage gem that was built in 1902, has been careful to keep her decorating interventions subtle, unobtrusive and in keeping with the character of the house – hence the slipper-style bathtub and authentic Czechoslovakian crystal beaded chandelier seen here.
Interior designer Lindie Ferreira created a unique synergy of antiques, Quaker-style simplicity and modernist collectables in this glamorous house. “All of these feed into the materiality of the home; the grain of the wood, the flecks in the marble,” she says. Making use of these kinds of “noble materials” means all the interiors – including this marble-clad bathroom – feel utterly classic, yet very contemporary too. ●
Tip
The twin basins in this bathroom are perfect for the space: the pedestal style makes them yet another classic element of the decor, yet they also have pared-back, modern lines. Find similar styles at Burlington (burlingtonbathrooms.com) and Hudson Reed (hudsonreed.com).
JUST LIKE US, OUR PETS CAN EXPERIENCE ANXIETY AND IT CAN SHOW UP IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. WHETHER YOU HAVE A DOG THAT WHINES WHEN YOU LEAVE OR A CAT THAT STARTS ACTING OUT WHEN YOU’RE GONE, KNOWING THE SIGNS OF PET ANXIETY CAN HELP YOU ADDRESS THE ISSUE AND MAKE YOUR FURRY FRIEND FEEL SAFE AND SECURE. LET’S EXPLORE HOW TO SPOT THE SIGNS OF STRESS IN BOTH CATS AND DOGS AND SOME PRACTICAL WAYS TO SOOTHE THEM.
BY MORGAN STEWART
Fear and anxiety are all part of the brain’s normal response to stress, involving the release of hormones like adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. While short-term spikes in cortisol and adrenaline can sharpen the mind, prolonged exposure to these hormones during chronic stress can impair cognitive function, causing damage to the hippocampus.
Cats sleep for 12 to 16 hours a day, but anxiety can disrupt their natural sleep patterns, leading to increased restlessness. Some cat breeds, like Siamese or Burmese, are more prone to anxiety and may require additional attention and calming techniques.
Although cats are often seen as independent creatures, they can still suffer from stress. Cats that have experienced trauma or were orphaned may develop separation anxiety, particularly when their owners are away for extended periods.
Common signs of anxiety in cats include:
• Excessive meowing or crying
• Over-grooming or fur loss
• Destructive behaviour, such as scratching furniture
• Litter box avoidance
• Pacing or restlessness
• Excessive clinginess or hiding
It’s important to rule out medical issues like urinary tract infections before assuming anxiety is the cause of these behaviours. A visit to the vet can help confirm the diagnosis.
To help alleviate your cat’s anxiety, consider the following strategies:
Create a Safe Space: Provide a quiet, cosy area where your cat can retreat when stressed.
Interactive Toys: Offer toys or puzzles that keep your cat mentally engaged, especially when you’re not at home.
Background Noise: Leave the radio or TV on to create a calming atmosphere.
Gradual Absences: Gradually increase the length of time you’re away to help your cat adjust.
Pheromone Diffusers: Products that mimic calming pheromones can help reduce stress.
Dogs, being highly social animals, can also develop anxiety due to various triggers, such as changes in routine, loud noises or separation from their owners. Dogs with separation anxiety can show signs as early as 30 minutes after their owner leaves. Routine and gradual departures can help ease this anxiety. Signs of anxiety in dogs include:
• Barking, whining, or howling when alone
• Destructive behaviour like chewing on furniture
• Trembling or cowering
• Pacing or inability to settle
• Aggression or guarding of food and toys
• Licking or chewing their paws excessively
• If left untreated, anxiety can lead to significant emotional and physical distress for dogs
To manage your dog’s anxiety, try these techniques:
Stay Calm: Dogs can pick up on their owners’ emotions, so it’s crucial to remain calm and soothing.
Follow a Routine: Maintain a consistent routine for meals, walks and playtime to help your dog feel secure.
Safe Space: Provide a comfortable, quiet space to which your dog can retreat when anxious.
Calming Tools: Calming treats like CalmEze Plus and pheromone sprays can help alleviate anxiety in some dogs.
Behaviour Modification: If anxiety persists, work with a dog trainer or behaviourist to help your dog overcome their fears.
If your pet’s anxiety is severe or not improving, it may be time to seek professional help. A vet can rule out medical conditions and recommend treatments, which may include medication or other calming products, but always under veterinary guidance.
Understanding and addressing your pet’s anxiety can significantly enhance their quality of life. By recognising the signs and taking action—whether through behavioural changes, creating safe spaces, or using calming tools—you can help your pet feel more comfortable and secure. ●

Exploring Conservation and Luxury at Morukuru Beach Lodge
DE HOOP NATURE RESERVE, AN EXCLUSIVE SANCTUARY ALONG OUR PRISTINE COASTLINE, IS A BREATHTAKING BLEND OF UNSPOILED LANDSCAPES, DIVERSE WILDLIFE AND A SERENE ESCAPE INTO NATURE’S UNTOUCHED BEAUTY. MORUKURU BEACH LODGE, SITUATED WITHIN THIS HAVEN, OFFERS AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR THOSE SEEKING LUXURY, NATURE AND SUSTAINABILITY IN PERFECT HARMONY.
By Anje Hill
Earlier this year, we had the privilege of staying at this stunning lodge to take part in their third annual beach clean-up and explore the many wonders of De Hoop. From sweeping landscapes to responsible tourism, Morukuru Beach Lodge truly stands out as a model for sustainable travel.
One of the highlights of our trip was participating in the third annual beach cleanup, organised by Morukuru Family and CapeNature. This two-day event, held in May, was not just an opportunity to help clean the beaches but also a powerful reminder of the environmental challenges we face. Covering a 16-kilometres stretch of beach, volunteers—including guests, staff and local conservationists—collected nearly 4 tons of trash.
It was an eye-opening experience, especially when everyday items like toothbrushes, lighters and even half a refrigerator were uncovered. Among the numerous items we encountered, we were particularly shocked by the sheer volume of nurdles (tiny plastic pellets used in manufacturing) highlighting the pervasive plastic pollution threatening our oceans and wildlife.
The clean-up was both sobering and inspiring, as it highlighted the importance of collective action in protecting our planet. Thanks to initiatives like Morukuru’s “Plastic4Coffee” programme, visitors are encouraged to contribute to ongoing beach clean-ups, trading collected plastic for a cup of coffee at the Bites Beach Café.
This annual event serves as a testament to the lodge’s commitment to environmental conservation, leaving us with a profound sense of purpose and accomplishment.
Morukuru Beach Lodge is not your typical luxury getaway. Sustainability is woven into the fabric of the lodge, from its architecture to its daily operations. Built with eco-friendly materials like reclaimed railway sleepers and local sandstone, the lodge boasts energyefficient designs that maximise natural light and ventilation, eliminating the need for air conditioning. The roofs are even planted with fynbos, the indigenous vegetation of the region.
Both Morukuru Beach Lodge and its sister property, Morukuru Ocean House, are completely off-grid, powered by solar energy. They generate over 210,000 kWh of solar energy annually, offsetting nearly 150 tons of carbon
De Hoop Nature Reserve spans over 34,000 hectares, offering an untouched paradise that includes 50 kilometres of pristine beaches, vast dunes, wetlands and fynbos-covered mountains. Its diverse
ecosystem is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, from southern right whales breaching offshore to herds of bontebok and Cape Mountain zebra roaming the plains.
emissions. Water conservation is also a priority, with sustainable water sourcing, filtration and greywater recycling systems in place to support the surrounding ecosystems.
Every aspect of your stay is thoughtfully curated to minimise environmental impact. From eco-friendly toiletries to locally sourced food, guests can indulge in luxury without compromising on sustainability. During our stay, we were continuously impressed by the little luxuries that made our experience so special.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and always willing to answer our endless questions about the lodge and its natural surroundings. Breakfast was a true affair—beginning with a delicious cheese and fruit platter, freshly squeezed fruit and veggie juice to energise us for the day, followed by freshly baked bread and your choice of eggs, bacon and all the trimmings.
The rooms themselves were a highlight, positioned to ensure total privacy with mesmerising views. We loved the nibbles, chocolates and homemade cookies left for us— perfect for a midnight snack!
From mosquito repellent to sunblock, a reading lamp and more, the rooms had every amenity thoughtfully covered. One morning, we woke early, opened the curtains and were lucky enough to spot a lone eland walking up from the beach—a sight that encapsulated the perfect balance between luxury and the wild.
At Morukuru Beach Lodge, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy. Whether you’re looking to relax or get active, the lodge offers a wide array of options. Guests can explore the coast on a marine walk, hike through the fynbos, or even try sandboarding down the nearby dunes. For those who prefer a slower pace, sundowners on the beach provide the perfect opportunity to unwind while taking in the breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.
We also made sure to enjoy lunch at Bites Café after the beach clean-up—a great spot we would encourage all visitors to experience. Even if you’re only visiting for a day trip, we recommend participating in a beach clean-up of your own, followed by a leisurely lunch at Bites Café.

ALASKA IS A DESTINATION WHERE THE WILDERNESS FEELS ENDLESS AND ADVENTURE NEVER STOPS. CRUISING THE ‘INSIDE PASSAGE’ ON A NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE SHIP OFFERS FRONT-ROW SEATS TO THE UNTAMED BEAUTY OF AMERICA’S 49TH STATE. FROM BLUE-HUED GLACIERS AND ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME WILDLIFE SPOTTING TO GOLD-RUSH HISTORY, EACH PORT BRINGS WITH IT A NEW ENCOUNTER OF ‘THE LAST FRONTIER’.
By Iga Motylska
Alaska is a land of wide, open spaces, where the wilderness is seemingly endless and adventure has no bounds. It’s called ‘The Last Frontier’, and standing on the deck of a Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) ship, breathing in the crisp spring air and looking at Hubbard Glacier, I understand why. Nothing could prepare me for the sheer size and scale of seeing North America’s largest tidewater glacier.
The ship turns in a 360-degree revolution, giving every passenger a view of the great wall of ice before us. The smart ones sit inside their heated balcony cabins or with their faces pressed against the floor-toceiling windows of the Atrium Lounge. I layer up against the cold and brave the elements to stare this awe-inspiring glacier head-on, as it stretches 10 kilometres wide. I am taken aback by its vivid blue hue. Over the ship’s intercom, the captain narrates that its colour is due to the way the light bends and breaks inside this ginormous sheet of ice, reflecting shorter-wavelength colours like violet and blue.
Beyond the glacier, this is a destination where the horizon stretches into forever and yet you feel that anything might be around the next corner.
If you want to see Alaska, or at least a decent portion of this vast 49th state, the best way to do so is by sea, especially as some of its islands and islets – like Juneau, Alaska’s capital – can only be reached by water or air. The ‘Inside Passage’ consists of protected waterways that are sheltered from the Pacific Ocean by numerous islands along the coast, making it an ideal cruise for firsttimers, such as myself.
For the duration of your cruise, the ship becomes your compass, guiding you through the inland sea to awaken to a new port that unfolds adventure before you each day. Onboard, the ship is more than merely your mode of transport. It’s a small floating city, well almost – with a selection of fine-dining restaurants, world-class wines and awardwinning entertainment from theatre shows and musical performances to dance clubs and casinos.
I made my way to the pool-side bars and
“Alaska is moving and changing, always. It doesn’t wait for you, but it offers the chance to witness nature’s unending cycle of renewal.”

climbed into an open-air jacuzzi, where I’d sit with a drink in hand, watching white-capped peaks drift by and melting snow stream into the water. I spotted otters in the water below, seals bobbing about on brightly-coloured buoys and a humpback whale with her calf bubble net feeding. I watched as she blew air through her blowhole to create a bubble curtain that disorients fish. This allowed the whale and her calf to scoop the fish into their mouths. Until now, this was only something I had seen on the Discovery Channel. There is no feeling like it in the world, especially when at 8pm, during the summer solstice, the sun still hangs high in the sky, while Bald Eagles soar overhead.
After a few days, I learned that I couldn’t put anything past Alaska. In Icy Strait Point, brown bears outnumber people. I didn’t see any bears as I walked through Hoonah Mountain, but perhaps that was for the best. I did see one later, though, on the shoreline, freshly awake from hibernation in search of some post-nap sustenance.
In Juneau, I laced my waterproof hiking boots to walk 5.5km through the Tongass Forest to see Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls, where I caught
my first glimpse of a mountain goat and watched kayakers glide by on Mendenhall Lake. Other cruisers chose to do a more adventurous on-shore excursion on offer from NCL – flying over the glacier in a helicopter, before touching down on the 19.3km2 ‘ice block’ and walking across it in crampons.
At Skagway, I meandered among gold-rush-era buildings that are preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and embarked along The White Pass and Yukon Route to the border of Canada.
Valdez was the gateway to Prince William Sound, an ecologically important conservation area, where our day-trip boat passed fjordlands and icebergs of all sizes. Columbia Glacier loomed ahead, a giant, retreating into itself, pulling back from the world, faster than nature’s cycles intended; but, Alaska is like that. It is moving and changing, always, with each season. It doesn’t wait for you, for me, for anyone, but it welcomes all and offers the chance to witness nature’s unending cycle of change and renewal. ●

Between May and September, Alaska transforms into the ‘land of midnight sun’ ahead of its summertime cruise season. During this time, the sun shines for up to 18 hours. This creates the perfect conditions for exploring Alaska’s dramatic landscapes, though it also means that you’re more likely to be spending more time outdoors, exposed to the elements, which is why it’s important to pack and dress appropriately.
In May, temperatures range from 7-15°C, with the chance of a chill factor. As the weather may be unpredictable, especially at higher elevations, I packed my 75-litre Thule Subterra Wheeled Duffel for every weather condition, with clothes for layering in the one compartment and my water-proof and wind-resistant gear, along with my waterproof hiking boots in the other. Don’t forget your swimming costume and shades. “In Icy Strait Point, brown bears outnumber people.”
