Williams & ICHA Teen Travel Team Wins at the Worlds by Neil Flaum At the 2006 World Handball Championships held in Edmondton Canada, Paul Williams, our perennial president proved he was still a force to be reckoned with in the handball world winning the masters “40 and over” one walls singles over Robert McCarthy of Kilkenny Ireland. Over the last year our pres has shed perhaps half a person in weight turning himself into a “lean mean handball machine”. The player “formally know as Big Paul” set a great example for our organization proving, once again, that fitness counts.

In addition our pres chaparoned the fifth ICHA sponsored travel team in 15 years. the 2006 ICHA Teen Travel team consisted of Sarah Au, Jurrell Bastidas, Tyree Bastidas, Jonathan Camacho,Jenny Hui, Jonathan Iglesias, Billy O’Donnell and Michael Wu. All teens represented New York Handball well and did us proud.

Sara Au the recipient of the ICHA Junior Female Athlete of the Year Award and Brooklyn Technical H.S. student, not only won the 15 and under girls singles one wall but, with teammate Lian Chen took second place in the Women’s One Wall doubles.

Tyree Bastidas ,the recipient of the ICHA Junior Male Athlete of the year award and MidWood H.S. student, won the 15 and under award boys singles one wall, and took second place in the 19 and under boys doubles one wall with brother Jurell Bastidas. Jurrell is also the recipient of the ICHA 2006 Phil Fuchs scholarship.

William O’Donnell of Lake Forest College won the 19 and under singles defeating partner and teammate Jonathan Camacho of Fort Hamiltion H.S. in a spectacular 11-10 tie-breaker. This first time team then went on to dominate and win the

19 & under one wall doubles, in addition to taking second place in the 19 and under in the four wall doubles.

Former travel teen team member Theresa McCourt (now all grown up), the recipient of the ICHA 2006 Female Athlete of the award, proved that she was not only a member of New York’s finest but one of the worlds finest as well, winning the Women’s One Wall Open Singles, the Women’s four wall A singles and the Women’s Open one wall doubles with BayRidge teen sensation Stacy Olenik.

Former ICHA teen team member and Jr. World Champion Na Liu came in second to McCourt in the women one wall Open Singles.

Stacy Oleynik, this years ICHA/USHA Junior Big Blue Champion not only won the women’s doubles but McCourt, but also the 19 and under girls one-wall singles.

Congratulations to our pres, travel team, former team members and Stacy Oleynik for all of their outstanding achievements.

Past and Present Recipients of the Phil Fuchs Award

John “Phil” Fuchs, Jr. November 9, 1945 - January 23,2001

ICHA is committed to the Phil Fuchs Fund.

To be of most benefit to the young athletes eligible for these funds, the John “Phil” Fuchs fund needs to grow. The Fund’s purpose is not only to honor the memory of Phil Fuchs, but to provide handball awards ranging from $100 to $1000 to young ICHA athletes who maintain academic excellence in their senior year of high school and throughout college while perfoming unselfish acts of community service.

• 2003 Genciano Clotter of was the first recipient of a $500 award.

• 2004 Stan Zavoyskiy, Nicholas Tikakov, Jonathan Iglesias, Ron Flores, John Mantilla, Alex Gavryushenko, Allen Sanchez, Quasia Watson, Kelly Au were awarded Citywide YMCA memberships paid for with $1,400 raised by the Phil Fuchs Fund.

• 2005 William O’Donnell and Nick Roman each received a $1,000 award.

• 2006 Jurrell Bastidas receives a $1,000 award for his project, sportsmanship and ICHA volunteer work. Jurell a graduate of Midwood High School currently attends Kingsbourgh College. Jurrell’s major is accounting and plans to attend Baruch College to complete his Bachelor’s Degree.

John “Phil” Fuchs, Jr. November 9, 1945–January 23, 2001 Beloved husband of Lois. Adored and devoted father of Michelle, Donna and Jonathan. Born in Jacksonville, Florida.

John lived his childhood years in Coney Island and the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, New York. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy, working in the sonar section on the nuclear submarine, USS John Marshall. He worked many years for Xerox Corporation, as a technician, and earned the respect of both customers and co-workers. For almost 30 years John loved playing handball and the camaraderie he had with the players. He was an honest, hard working, good sportsman, decent and caring human being. He loved to cook and bake, watch television, garden, shop and decorate for the holidays. He was an animal and nature lover. He had a great sense of humor, took joy in the simple things in life, and would help anyone who needed it. It was said of Phil that he “would always make a place lighten up with laughter, and it was always a better day because of that”. And “the world was a richer place because of Phil’s humanity.”

And he “was an exceptional father, a great man and a cool guy all rolled into one”.

He will be deeply missed by his family, and his many relatives, co-workers and friends whose lives he touched.

2006 ICHA HONOREES 2006 Community Service Award Councilman Vincent Gentile Councilmember for District #43 Brooklyn since 2003, Vincent Gentile serves Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights and Bath Beach has been an avid supporter of ICHA junior programs and 3 wall Handball Courts for the past two years.

2006 Community Service Award Juan Carlos Guerra The newest supporter of Professional Handball in the past two years, Mr. Guerra, with the use of his own private funds has generated enormous excitement and exposure for the sport of one wall handball.
