Cathy Chen Came to Conquer the Court

A

s seed 1 of the Girl’s 17 Under Singles, Cathy Chen made sure to stay on top. She soared through Girl’s 17 Under Doubles quarter-finals against opponent Ivett Avila and won with a score of 21-12. Kailey Van took up the challenge against Chen in the semifinals, but Chen’s skillful shots overpowered Van’s efforts; Chen moved on to the finals with a score of 21-13 against Van. On the other side of the bracket, Yasmin Mendoza defeated her opponents with ease and scored 21-11 against Serena Zhu in the quarter-finals and 21-7 against Samantha Lee in the semi-finals.

As seed 1, Chen had to prove her position against Mendoza with seed 7 and that she did. She conquered the Girl’s 17 Under Singles against Mendoza with a score of 21-13 and took home the championship title.

With ease, Chen continued to

win more games in the Girl’s 19 Under Singles division and defeated all her opponents, while leaving them under 10 points.

Giovanni Vasquez Defeats the Bastidas Brothers Giovanni Vasquez came back to the ICHA tournament to prove he was still a top player in the small ball realm. Vasquez succeeded to make his first statement in the quarter-finals by defeating Saul Gonzalez who was seeded one placement higher. Multi-championship title player, Tyree Bastidas did not take the game lightly against Vasquez and both players performed difficult volleys and angle shots that the crowd was all waiting to see. Vasquez came out on top with a close score of 25-22 and moved to the finals.

Jurell Bastidas landed a spot in the finals by passing through his opponents swiftly and left Jesus Ayala on 6 in the quarter-finals and Nick Roman on 4 in the semi-finals. Despite Bastidas’s attempt to take on Vasquez in the finale, he did not succeed.

Both Vasquez and Bastidas attempted to out volley each other, but Vasquez took the leap and ended several volleys with strong kills. Vasquez defeated Bastidas, scoring 2519, and claimed the small ball championship title.

Steven Poon Slams the 17 Divisions Steven Poon swept through the large bracket of the Boy’s 17 Under Singles division and left all his opponents under 10, including his final opponent, Zunhing Lin, in the finale.

Poon did not stop in the singles and took the title in the Boy’s 17 Under doubles with his partner Thomas Chan. Poon and Chan played their most difficult game in the finals against Joyson Chen and Taison Chen, but despite it being the most difficult, they pushed through and won with a score of 21-14.

USHA/ICHA Junior Big Blue/Adult Singles Championship

Who Wins? Cathy Chen or Shnae Cummings?

C

oming into the tournament as #1 seed, Shnae Cummings had a championship title to defend once again. She was unstoppable in 2018, and to no surprise, she came to the tournament determined and ready to take on her opponents.

Cummings faced her first opponent, Jenny Minchala, also a familiar face to ICHA tournaments. Minchala challenged herself to crack Cummings, but Cummings refused to be taken down.

Cummings defeated Minchala with a score of 21-1.

With the same goal as Minchala, Jenny Wu did all she could to out volley Cummings and go for difficult kills. Despite Wu’s efforts, Cummings wins with a suprising score of 21-0.

On the other side of the bracket, Cathy Chen had closer games.

She scored 21-11 against Laly Prado in the quarter finals, and a close 21-20 against Nancy Casimiro in the semi-finals.

Chen warmed up with these two matches to face Cummings in finals.

Both players went into the game focused and ready to win.

Cummings, however, takes out Chen with skills unlike other junior girls and wins 21-0.

Jhim Lopez and Nazir Marston Take Over Jhim Lopez and Nazir Marston came into the tournament with one goal in mind together, to win the 17 Doubles together.

Coming in as the underdog seeded 12, Lopez and Marston created an upset right off the bat in the first round against

Andrew Tam and Vincent Chen. Lopez and Marston power through the first match and defeated Tam and Chen with a swift 21-1. The second match against Bryan Almachi and Julian Lopez was tougher, but with a great momentum built, Lopez and Marston defeat Almachi and Lopez 21-10. The biggest shock came when Lopez and Marston went against seed 1 in the semi-finals, Daniel Oh and Steven Poon. Everyone anticipated a close match, but Lopez and Marston were unstoppable and left Oh and Poon on 9. Israel Beltran and Jose Quiroz put up a strong fight in the finale, but to no avail, Lopez and Marston took home the championship title.

Jim Jacobs Scholarship Application

In memory of Jim Jacobs, a National Handball Hall of Famer, and philanthropist.

Applicant Requirements: Inner City Handball Association & United States Handball Association member Open to High School Seniors graduating in Spring 2020 that plan to attend college full-time in the Fall of 2020, up to full-time third-year Undergraduate student Age: 17 - 23

Scholarship: $1000

Theme: We learn things both inside and outside of school. Outside of school, we learn from the people we meet, from the things we do, from the music we hear, from the films we see, and from the books we read.

Requirement: Create a portfolio using images (photos, video, or digital renderings), audio, or writing to explain lessons you have learned playing handball.

Connect those lessons to ones you have learned elsewhere either in school or out.

Michael Schneider Sr. Scholarship Application In memory of Michael Schneider Sr., a life-long supporter and ICHA contributor, we hope to stimulate handball participation locally and nationally.

Applicant Requirements: Inner City Handball Association & United States Handball Association member

Open to High School Seniors graduating in Spring 2020 that plan to attend college full-time in the Fall of 2020 or full-time first year Undergraduate student Age: 17 - 23

Scholarship: $1000

Theme: We learn things both inside and outside of school. Outside of school, we learn from the people we meet, from the things we do, from the music we hear, from the films we see, and from the books we read.

Requirement: Create a portfolio using images (photos, video, or digital renderings), audio, or writing to explain lessons you have learned playing handball.

Connect those lessons to ones you have learned elsewhere either in school or out.
