Dear friends

The end of another Summer at Aldinga Bay. Thank you to all our members who have given up their time to make our beach safer for everyone.

Congratulations to our members who have maintained and gained new awards over the year which benefits our community. Without our trainers and examiners this would not be possible. To our surf sports competitors, Masters, Seniors and Juniors who have represented Aldinga Bay over the year – Well Done! This would not be possible without our Coaches and Officials giving up their time to assist our competitors – Thank you.

Our club could not function without the members of our club who Fundraise – an arduous job – Thank you.

Then there is a group that must be mentioned – who are invisible to us all – The Members who mow the Lawns weed the garden, pick up the rubbish, empty the bins, and maintain the Club House. Without you we would be in a sorry state.

We need to acknowledge the ongoing support from the City Of Onkaparinga, State & Federal Government, SLSSA and also the support from our Sponsors and Donors which is valued greatly.

Well done to Dan, the Junior Committee and all the Age Group leaders for their efforts this season.

I would like to acknowledge the assistance we receive from the Mid Coast Surf Life Saving Group, which we are a member of. For our members that don’t know, the group is made up the four other clubs in the City Of Onkaparinga. It allows the Presidents of these clubs to get together and discuss club issues which we all have.

As you are all aware we have had continued issues with our Kiosk and Evening meals. The committee is working to get the best result for our club as it does have huge potential to be an ongoing income stream for us.

and Life Saving building at the rear of our club house. It’s planned that this building will give us enough storage space for the near future and give us new wet areas, patrol and first aid rooms.

None of this will come cheap, which is why we need to continue with fundraising efforts. Going forward we need to be able to fund the new building, start to look at renovating our existing building and also be able to supply our patrols and competitors with the best equipment we can afford. Unfortunately, money is the only way we can achieve these goals.

Our club does operate all year round. Good Luck to our IRB competitors over winter and thank you again to our invisible army who are active at our club all year.

Vice President As the 2015/2016 Season draws to an end, it’s time to give a brief overview of events of the past season and plans for the coming year.

Firstly I would like to thank all our patrolling members, new and old, helping us achieve our patrol agreement with SLSSA. Without these people we cannot survive as a club.

There are many volunteers within our club that also make this club operate and exist. These include committee members, bar managers & volunteers, officials, trainers & assessors, junior area leaders & water cover, BBQ cookers and those that help with the jobs no one else wants to do.

Thank you to old members, welcome to new and keep up the good work.

Remember a good club is made up of many doing a little work rather than a handful doing a lot. Get involved and help make ABSLSC a better club.

Lazy Sundays have been a successful fundraiser once again, along with Beach Road BBQ’s and our many sponsors.

Congratulations to all of our junior, senior & masters competitors, for the outstanding results over the season and thanks to all for making the effort to represent our club.

Friday night meals and the kiosk have come to a halt at the moment but we hope to resolve this over the coming months, with an outcome for the better of our club and members.

There have been many discussions with SLSSA over the season looking at the possibilities of renovations/additions to our club, with the aid of State and Local Government funding, and a percentage of club funds. We hope to have some plans to show members soon for their feedback, so hopefully some exciting times ahead for ABSLSC.

Secretary It has been my pleasure to once again work with the Aldinga Bay SLSC Executive and Management Committees. Despite what you might hear, they are a great bunch of guys who put in tireless amounts of hours behind the scenes to make things happen for the club!

For the 2015/16 Season, we farewelled Sally Williams from the committee and welcomed back Sven Molenaar. While there have been many quality and robust discussions about the activities and future directions for the club, the committee has been the poorer from not having female representation. It would be my wish going forward that our female membership would consider serving the club in this way for the next year or two. If there is anything the committee could do to help facilitate this, please let us know.

While so many people make great contributions there a few that I would especially like to highlight for their outstanding service to the committee: Jeanette and Maurice Pitt have again been the backbone of the fundraising of the club. The efforts required to stock and staff the bar do not go unnoticed and are greatly appreciated, through not just Friday nights, but also Lazy Sunday’s and the growing number of marquee events held over the season.

The social membership has continued to grow thanks to the energies of Sally Williams and her team. This has expanded our pool of volunteers for fundraising and working around the clubhouse.

Furthermore, our Lazy Sundays are valued by our local community and have made a huge financial contribution to the club’s operation – thanks Sally!!

Meg Molenaar has put in a tremendous effort this year. Pulling together teams to run the Beach Rd BBQs is no easy task! Each one was well staffed and raised important funds for the club. And the committee was thrilled with the success of the presentation night! Meg and her team did a

fantastic job to organise and promote the evening and put on a wonderful event enjoyed by all present.

To Sven Molenaar, firstly for cajoling us all into running a hugely successful working bee, giving the club a much needed freshen up. And secondly, for taking on the task of producing a monthly newsletter. This has been a tremendous help to communication between the members and the committee.

The club has greatly benefitted by the services of our treasurer – Brendan Cocks. Over the last two seasons Brendon has made numerous changes to make the processing of our finances far more efficient, saving both the club’s money and our volunteer’s time. His experience and insight has made an invaluable contribution to the committee.

Wishing Brendan every success into the future.

And finally, to Karen Goldie for producing this amazing report! As I distribute them to our supporters in the community, I get so many comments on the professional quality of the presentation. Thank you so much for your time and creative energy!!

Club Captain As always, we have so many people to thank for their effort and input throughout the season.

Whilst those people in Patrol uniform are easily recognised and appreciated, there are many people ‘behind the scenes’ without whom, the club could not function. Our President – Paul, Secretary Malcolm, Brendon our Treasurer, Jeanette & Maurice behind the bar, and the list goes on. All of these people have given their time, and all are very much appreciated.

On the Competition front, as ever we need to encourage, assist and nurture the talent that we have. Competition Coaching can be a very rewarding experience, but is hard work also. This season Kristen Rothwell has taken her first steps as a coach, and has enjoyed success already. We certainly appreciate Kristen becoming a coach, and I wish her a long and illustrious career – we will always be needing people like Kristen to undertake such roles.

As ever, our Junior Committee has done an outstanding job, our trainers have trained to a high standard. My appreciation also goes to Heidi Fisher-Casbierd who has taken on the role of Youth Development Officer – an important ‘next step’ up from Juniors.

Personally, I have to thank my family for allowing me to spend my time freely at the beach, and finally, thank you to Karen Goldie for making such a great job of compiling our annual report.

Our Vice Captain of Patrols, Sven Molenaar has been a great help, and kept us all well informed with a range of Patrol Statistics throughout the season.

Once again, our patrolling members have been a credit to the club – they have been vigilant and have served well. We have assisted, rescued and carried out numerous Preventative Measures.

With regard to Preventative Measures, we need to take every opportunity to educate members of the public whilst they are at the beach – to advise them of offshore winds for example, and whatever else that is relevant to public safety. Remember, give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, but teach him to fish and he will eat for ever, perhaps not the best analogy- but the point being that it is better to educate and inform at an early stage, than it is to rescue someone later.

Vice Captain of Patrols Aldinga Bay SLSC Members have kept to our motto of ‘Vigilance and Service’ by keeping our Beaches safe for the 2015/2016 season.

We started Surveillance Patrols on October 10th, moved through to Full Patrol from November, and we concluded our season on April 3rd with the Multisport Event.

Patrols were led by our Captains: Patrol 1 - Ray Tomlinson Patrol 2 - Tom Mills Patrol 3 - Andrew Meyer Patrol 4 - Meg Molenaar Patrol 5 - Keith Mills Patrol 6 - Simon Rothwell Patrol 7 - Scott Goldie Our Club President, Paul Hibbird and Club Captain, Keith Mills sign the yearly agreement with Surf Central, where we commit to what equipment we will have available, dates that we will Patrol and numbers we will have on Patrol. Our Patrol Captains are the leaders of their Patrol Teams who make sure we cover what we have agreed on.

Patrol Hours were completed during each Weekend and Public Holiday through Rostered and Voluntary Patrols. Our club was committed to Roster Members for the Radio Room on three occasions and provide Water Cover in the IRB on two occasions. We also provided Water cover at Junior Carnivals and Junior State Titles. We provided cover at the Masters State Boat Titles held at our beach. Our members also completed Junior and Bronze Water Cover at our home beach, as well as the Water Cover for the Multisport Festival held in April.

In total we accumulated 2,124.25 Hrs, (figure 1), which was a small decrease compared to last year’s results, (figure 2).

We had 60 members complete their SRC/Bronze proficiency and four gain their SRC/Bronze who were new for the season. In all 64 members gained hours for the club, an increase of four members from last season, (figure 2). Our Patrolling numbers have increased steadily over the past five seasons.

We have had 30 members gain their 100% Patrol attendance, (figure 3). This was a great result and an improvement to previous year’s results. Members were awarded a small gift in recognition of this achievement. They either attended or made sure they had a Patrol Swap for each of their Rostered Patrols, from November through to March. Having members that can be relied on, in turn helps support our State Association, who in turn are helped with funding from our State and Local Governments.

Vice Captain of Patrols I would also like to highlight the Hours that five of our club members have completed in supporting our State’s Activities. Hours were completed in the Helicopter, Jet Boat and Jet Ski. Having a number of our members gain their Jet Ski Operator’s Certificate, has increased the visibility of this craft at our beach. Club members who have their Bronze Medallion can go onto gaining qualifications, and I would invite you to talk to those members if you are interested.

Thank you to our club members who volunteered for Christmas Day Patrol. We awarded them with a small gift to thank them for giving up their time on this Family Day. Thanks go to Andrew Meyer, Katie Meyer, Wilma Mace, Mark Rothwell and Dan Pain.

The Patrol Activity Summary, (figure 4), highlights the work of our members during the Season. I have also included a comparison to last year. We completed four Rescues; each one thankfully did not require Ambulance assistance. One of those instances was on a late Friday afternoon. This highlights that our Club and its Members are available to assist at any time. We had an increase in Searches and a decrease in Shark Alarms.

I wanted to thank the work that Keith Mills has completed over the Season. He gained the most Hours of Patrol/Water Cover. He organised our Patrol equipment for the Annual Inspection, organised Patrol and Water Cover members for the Masters Boat States and Multisport festival, completing countless hours of Voluntary Patrols in excess of his Rostered Patrols. Besides his commitment to Patrolling, Keith was also involved in other areas of the club, which will be highlighted in the Annual Report.

I wanted to acknowledge the work that Scott Goldie and Simon Rothwell have completed in training our club’s Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate Candidates. There is a lot of work involved in getting Candidates to a level so that they are ready to complete their Assessment. Training is usually completed twice a week and so is a big commitment for these guys to make. Each of us as Club Members need to help in this process of Qualifying new members and Advancing existing members through awards.

I also wanted to highlight the work that Scott Axton has completed over the Season in relation to our IRB area. Our Equipment is in great shape, thanks to his dedication. The IRB group of Drivers and Crew work together to help look after this craft, under his guidance. The IRB is available on Standby or Operational at every Patrol. The IRB is used during Junior Activities on a Saturday afternoon, used for Water Cover at Carnivals and events and used to train new members for their Bronze, SRC and this season IRB Crew.

In closing I wanted to thank the Active members for their efforts over the Summer Season. I certainly hope that the members have enjoyed the year at Aldinga Bay and look forward to next season.

Training Officer Once again our patrol season comes to an end, with a productive year in regards to training.

Juniors have led the way with awards this year with: • 10 achieving their resuscitation (AID) awards - Angus Cocks, Zachariah Dean, Emily Fowles, Bailey Haines, Regan Hughes, Hayley Jordan, Ben Meyer, Isla Rowlands, Mya Smith & Hailie Spakianos.

• 3 radio operator certificates - Finnegan MacDonald-Hall, Sebastian Dean & Jamie Culross.

• We had 2 SRC & 5 bronze achieve awards

this year, a smaller group than normal but all welcome additions to our patrolling group.

• SRC - Oliver Carpenter & Caleb Rowlands.

• Bronze - Victoria Back, Sebastian Dean, Katie Meyer, Daniel Scadden & Denise

Watts.

I would like to apologise to those who have completed their ATV certificate over the last couple of years, I have had a few issues with entering these but should have this sorted over the off season.

For those wanting to achieve further awards, keep an eye on Aldinga Bay SLSC Facebook page for a few off season training courses. ARTC & Senior First Aid are a few options that maybe offered.

Competition Officer This season has been very successful with the increase of members competing which is very pleasing to see.

Club Champs – although a poor turnout this season, we will try to work on a different approach so more members can attend – results are as follows:

Heidi Fisher – Youth Development Officer has done a terrific job for her first year organizing our younger competitors and let’s hope she continues.

Congratulations to Skye Fisher for winning a bronze for Beach Flags.

Scott Axton again has achieved some good results with his IRB teams competing in last season’s IRB State Titles. Well done to all IRB competitors and all the best for this season’s State Titles.

Thank you to Dan Pain and the Junior Committee for their combined efforts in organizing the nippers in training and competition. It is great to see more of the younger competitors representing the red and green.

Congratulations to Bridie Nye for winning a bronze medal for under 11 Female Beach Sprint and to all the junior competitors this season.

Congratulations also to Ray Tomlinson for gaining his first medal - he competed in the Masters State Titles and also to Bryan Axton and Mark Rothwell for their successes.

IRB Captain The Aldinga Bay IRB group assisted the club from the start of October right through into early April with a range of different activities from general patrolling, water cover and special events. A huge thanks to all these members who helped keep these events and the beaches safe this summer, it is much appreciated.

We ran two IRB crew squads in the calendar year with the patrolling group, gaining 6 qualified members.

Congratulations to those members.

The 2015 IRB Season is run and won and what a successful season it has been for Aldinga Bay with the team winning Pennant races in the Southern State Challenge SA vs VIC at Portland, Victoria. SA Clubs joined in with the Round 5 Premiership Carnival. Victoria only run Open Male and Open Female, and top 8 finishers achieve points. We came 3rd overall with our results.

The State Titles was held on the 5th July in blustery, challenging surf conditions and Aldinga Bay had a great championships, excelling in the conditions. The team finished the weekend in 3rd place with 12 Medals. We also gained 2nd overall in the Premiership Series (Total Carnivals point score). This is just rewards for the hard work.

IRB National Titles Mooloolaba Beach Our team’s focus was competing at the National Championships. We were fortunate enough to have 4 club members represent SA in the State vs State competition held on Friday morning. Our representatives of Scott Axton, Dan Ferguson, Kristen Rothwell and Tayla Cox displayed great skills and teamwork. Overall SA finished 4th, with QLD winning the title.

We finished off the season with a very competitive effort at the National Titles reaching 3 Semi Finals (Male Mass, Male Rescue and Female Teams event) and the Male Teams Australian Final. Impressive effort from a determined group.

A big thanks to all the supporters and to the Club to help make this such a competitive team.

Boat Captain We had 3 crews representing our boat area this season: SEA DRAGONS: Andrew Meyer, Scott Goldie, Darryl Dykes, Michael Madeley and Peter Symons CHICKS WITH STIX: Sally Cornish, Cheryl Dykes, Wilma Mace, Sally Williams and Peter Symons KEITH’S CREW: Graham Lee, Wayne Rowlands, John Culross, Sven Molenaar and Keith Mills.

Senior State Titles – held at Southport.

Sea Dragons represented the club in the reserves, made the semi finals but missed out by 1 point to go through to the finals.

Thanks to all the members who represented our club in the boat area. To join a boat crew is a huge commitment. Being part of a team is very rewarding and thanks to the old and new members of the boat crews for keeping the spirit alive.

The Sea Dragons would like to thank Scott Goldie for his commitment over the past 5 years. We will hold lots of fond, frustrating and funny memories of our achievements and welcome John Culross to the crew for the coming season.

Aldinga Bay Masters State Titles – 3 Masters Crews.

We had 2 crews of 180yr male – again it is the highlight of the day to have 2 Aldinga crews in the final. Chicks with Stix 200yr females finished with a Bronze. Congratulations to these crews.

Junior Chair Another summer has come and gone again, and so too has our Junior Surf Life Saving season.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the organisation and running of Juniors at Aldinga Bay SLSC. Especially to our Junior committee and Age Group Managers, who did a wonderful job of meeting our compliance requirements and ensuring that our kids’ needs were catered for well, as we encourage surf safety & education, fun and involvement.

Numbers wise we had a significant increase in Junior registrations by approximately 40%. Our retention rate improved over previous years with 75% of Junior members returning from the previous season, compared to approximately 60% from previous years. As a result, the Junior area now contributes to almost 2/3 of total club membership.

Our Junior Swim Training continues to grow under the watchful eye of Rocky and Bryan who provide their time and experience through the good of their hearts. We are seeing great progress in the technique and swim times, as is evident through the monthly time trials. The club meets the cost of junior swim training (at $5 per child per session), and is further supported by regular donations from fundraising activities conducted at Mitsubishi Motors head office via Ashley Sanders. Thank you to Rocky, Bryan and Ash for their generosity.

Competition wise we had an excellent year as our carnival numbers continue to grow. Due to this growth, Aldinga Bay SLSC was required to provide an additional Official to each carnival. Thanks go to Ebony Hawkins-Romain for generously putting her hand up to fill this requirement, along with Bryan Axton who has been a great supporter of Aldinga Bay competition for many years as both a Junior and IRB Official.

Aldinga Bay SLSC Juniors attended all four of the junior carnivals this season, and competed strongly across all age groups and disciplines. Well

done to these kids who punch above their weight every time they step on the start line. It is always rewarding to see how our kids represent our club, as they are a role model to all with the levels of sportsmanship displayed at all levels. The ‘Red & Green Machine’ tasted success once again with Bronze going to Bridie Nye in the U11 Female Beach Sprint. We came so close to more medals with two x 4th places and two x 5th place, further supported by finals appearances throughout the weekend. We look forward to further improvement as our kids mature and of course as younger kids come up from Under 8’s in big numbers.

Congratulations to our Junior Life Savers of the Year, Isla Rowlands, Zac Dean and Caleb Rowlands, who were nominated by the club due to showing positive examples as role models for their peers and the younger kids.

Congratulations also to our own Brian Gray who received the Most Enthusiastic Club Member award at our recent Senior Presentation Night.

Junior Chair Please continue to support our new Junior Committee as we endeavour to further develop and improve our Junior area.

We intend to host a Junior carnival at Aldinga, which we envisage will increase member exposure to Junior competition, and provide a significant fund raising opportunity for our club. Accordingly we will require significant assistance from our members to do so. Spending wise we have some money donated from the Willunga Lions Ladies Auxillary, and will invest in some new equipment, and will conduct significant repair of existing equipment during the off-season.

Registrar Report Overall Membership The 2015/16 Season saw membership grow by 27% from 248 to 316, the majority through growth in the Junior area, which brings with it a similar number of parents. Social Membership showed its largest growth since its inception in 2012 approaching 10% of total membership.

Patrolling Members Patrolling numbers have steadily grown by 50% over the last 3 years to 64 after many years around 40.

The number of Juniors and Cadets patrolling, shows the majority are progressing from Juniors.

Member Retention The following Chart shows year over year membership in terms of retained and new members. The overlayed red line shows the number of members lost (did not renew). As can be seen most years the number lost is similar to the number of new recruits, the exceptions being 2010 when the Junior numbers declined considerably. On the flip side 2013 and 2015 saw New Members almost double Lost members again on the back of considerable Junior Growth.

Bar Report The financial year started very strongly. Sales were regularly over $500 each Friday night. This was considerably enhanced by the introduction of selected additional local wines. There was also a concerted effort on setting selling prices to ensure adequate margins.

Adding to the vibrancy of Friday nights were the monthly Lazy Sunday afternoons. This culminated in a record $4,200 plus sales day on the 4th October, 2015!

One off days such as the Masters State Boar Carnival also added significantly to bar revenue.

A successful football tipping contest was run, culminating in a great Grand Final day that generated revenue just under $1,500. This is continuing in the 2016 season.

Unfortunately the closure of the kitchen has decimated Friday nights and certainly caused a significant reduction in Lazy Sunday revenue.

Volunteers have been amazing. This not only includes the traditional Friday nights, but the enthusiastic group that got together to ensure Lazy Sundays were efficiently run, and the willing helpers for one off events.

Treasurer It is a great pleasure that I present the 2015/16 financial statements for ABSLSC. I would like to thank all of the Management committee for their continued support with my role as Treasurer and the tireless effort that all of them make to the ongoing success of our club.

a prospective lease of the kitchen and bar that will set the club up for a fixed rental income going forward. It is the committee’s belief that this is the best way forward financially for the club and will allow us to look at other avenues of income going forward.

The committee would like to thank our Major Sponsors Aldinga Beach Caltex, Peter Cochrane Transport & Infinite Lending Solutions. We look forward to your ongoing contribution to our club.

We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Mrs Eatts and the significant donation made by the Willunga Lions Club. The club would also like to acknowledge Surf Life Saving Australia, Surf Life Saving South Australia and the City of Onkaparinga for their ongoing financial support.

Whilst there has been a large amount of conversation, this year, regarding the new clubhouse the committee is still looking at the best way to spend the money that we have without putting the club into an unviable financial position. At this point we are looking at a number of scenario’s regarding the clubs expansion and will keep the members informed when a final decision is made.

The club has made a number of asset purchases this year that include a new motor and fittings for the IRB’s, a new double door bar fridge to replace the old one, a new sweep oar and furniture for the dining area.

We continue to support our IRB and boating teams at a state and national level, the participation of our members on a local and state level as well as continuing to support our nippers with the Thursday night swim coaching at Noarlunga. I would like to thank all the competitors of our competition teams as well as Bryan Axton and Mark Rothwell for their continued support of the swimming.

Maurice, Jeanette Pitt and Sally Williams as well as the many volunteers behind the bar have continued to generate income for the club on both Friday nights and Lazy Sundays, however Friday nights have reduced with the bar now only operating every second Friday due to the conclusion of Simon’s operation of the kitchen at the beginning of this year. We are currently in negotiations with

The Club still has $120,000 in our term deposit and approximately $50,000 in the trading account. Whilst we are currently generating minimal income, with the restaurant/bar hopefully opening towards the end of the year will should generate approximately $1,000/ week in rent after this. This is an improvement of around 35% of the income that we currently generate from the bar. This will, in-turn, allow us to look at other fundraising opportunities as they arise.

As I will not be standing for re-election this year I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the Junior and Senior committee for the contribution to the financial success of our Club. I wish all new and re-elected members to the committee’s as well as all active and general members all the best for the future.
